At GWD we always remind brides to keep their minds well and truly open when they start the wedding dress hunt and, thankfully, Shelley Weston did just that after Philip Patterson surprised her with a romantic Christmas Day proposal at the beautiful Fonab Castle Hotel‌

COVER STORY

“I loved trying on dresses and had always known I’d never want a big dress – I wanted something fitted to the waist with a long train,” says Shelley, who met Phil on a skiing holiday eight years ago. And she got exactly what she’d always wanted when she visited Avorio Bridal in Fochabers – well, almost: the dress of her dreams was also a big dress! “My shopping experience was great and I tried on so many different styles,” she explains, demonstrating exactly why it pays to try on every shape, even if you think it’ll just be to rule it out. You might hate the thought of something after seeing it on the hanger or in a magazine, but it can look so different once it’s hanging on you and when it’s been paired with the right accessories! Talking of which, Shelley added stunning Jimmy Choo shoes, a pretty bracelet from her hubby-tobe and sparkly earrings from Finnies The Jeweller (a gift from her parents). Although Shelley’s beloved gown was her first priority when it came to wedding planning, finding a venue followed shortly after. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

“Ballogie was the perfect place,” says Shelley, who’d always wanted a marquee wedding – so much so that she hired a second one for her big day, courtesy of Esslemont Marquees. Next up: the theme and, again, it was something the bride had always had in mind – a stylish combination of light blue and navy, which was reflected in the beautiful backless bridesmaid dresses from the Maids to Measure range at Perfect Bridal Rooms. Meanwhile, Phil opted for dashing navy tartan trews, paired with a grey waistcoat and jacket.

Before long, 18 May 2018 rolled around and it was the duo’s last night of freedom! Phil and his groomsmen set up camp at Banchory Lodge, whilst Shelley and her girls took over Ballogie House for a night of fun before a super-chilled wedding morning. A few hours later, they welcomed 130 guests for the ceremony and treated them to drinks and canapés afterwards with The London Essentials singing in the background. Country Flavours of Alford then ensured everyone’s tummies were full, serving up a feast of haggis bonbons, chicken or beef and a trio of desserts. A further 30 friends and family joined the celebrations in the evening and the couple went all out on their entertainment with not just their band, The Favours: they also brought in Paul Black on the mic, served delicious late-night nibbles from The Bay Fish & Chips and offered a magical firework display. After the big day, the new Mr and Mrs retreated to Skibo Castle with their adorable one-year-old for a few days to reflect on their nuptials: “It all passes so quickly,” says Shelley. “I’d advise other brides to enjoy the planning then make sure you take it all in on the big day.” ♥

GETTING STARTED

Wedding Planning Prepping!

Congratulations on getting engaged! Now all you have to do is fix a date, book the venue, send out invitations, find a dress/ suit, get a photographer, decide on food and entertainment, etc, etc… and probably juggle all this with work and normal daily life! For those who can’t wait to dive in to preparing your nuptials, hopefully the following’ll supercharge your planning and point you in the direction of the northeast’s fantastic wedding suppliers to support you. If, however, the thought of all the organising involved in becoming Mr & Mr, Ms & Ms or Mr & Mrs makes you feel like shimmying down a ladder and eloping, worry not – we have ideas and tips for making the whole process easier! First things first (before you go wild fixing on themes, schemes and arriving at the venue in a helicopter!), it’s a good idea to sit down and discuss your budget. What you can or can’t afford will affect your plans and knowing your limitations (if any) makes decisions – such as the length of the guest list and which suppliers to go for – easier to take. It’s also a good time to establish if you’re paying for everything yourselves or your folks are chipping in. Just remember that this may mean they’ll want more say over things, so it’s better to get that agreed up front to save you all from ‘debates’ further down the line. Once the budget negotiations are settled, rough out a guest list to give you an idea of the size of venue you’ll need (don’t forget the plus ones!), and jot down possible dates for your big day. Try to be flexible about this, as not only can it make it easier to fix a date at a venue you really like, but it may also save you some pennies. It’s cheaper to marry on weekdays or off season, for instance. And remember to take out wedding insurance once that’s booked – better to be covered for all possibilities as there are lots of costs involved (the average wedding is now in the region of £30,000, according to a survey carried out earlier this year by The Independent). www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

GETTING STARTED

You’ll also need to decide who’ll be in your back-up team. If you’re having a small wedding, a best man and a maid of honour may be all you want. For a bigger event, you might want flower girls or pageboys, as well as bridesmaids and groomsmen. And think carefully about your supporters – remember they’ll probably be in charge of the stag and hen dos… You want reliable people who’ll not only to get you to the ceremony on time and in one piece, but also provide moral and practical support. They could come in handy if you need to delegate some tasks, too!

If the mention of charts and to-do lists, however, makes you want to crawl under the duvet, perhaps our handy checklist (see opposite page) will ease your anxieties and give you a starting point for knowing when to organise what. Maybe you’ve got a friend or relative who loves organising and is willing to help? Failing that, why not look into getting a wedding planner? They can work within whatever budget you have, take over as many or as few tasks as you want, and probably save you money through their ‘little black book’ of contacts and ability to negotiate discounts. Meet them to see if you click – and then let them take the stress away. Date fixed and venue booked? Then you’ll need to get the word out to all interested parties to ‘save the date’! One of the earliest decisions you’ll make (at least nine months to a year before) is the design for your stationery, so you can let everyone know your date in plenty of time to make arrangements to be there. It’s a great opportunity to hint at your theme (if you have one) through the styling of your ‘save the date’ cards and then the invitations.

Obviously, you’ll have done your homework before picking a venue, but research is key to finding your perfect suppliers. Many happy hours can be spent scanning magazines (hint: GWD!) – in print or online – and websites, picking the brains of friends and family, or hitting a few bridal shows to find out what’s in and meet wedding specialists for an informal chat. Create colour-coded charts and checklists, either online (templates are available) or at the centre of an artistic wall display or book, and fill them with ideas, pictures, scraps of fabric and inspirational quotes! Just make sure you don’t get so excited about this that you forget to make appointments to meet people and decide if they’re right for making your ideas a reality. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.aberdeenphoto.com

www.elitephotographics.co.uk

Check out the stationery suppliers for what’s available, and decide if you’re getting them to do the work or are going DIY. Hot trends just now? Pressed flowers and plants instead of printed ones. Alternatively, go for an online invitation – perhaps with a video message. Remember to add a date for RSVPing, whether you’re posting paper invitations or sending electronic ones (or both!), and check about special diets. This’ll help work out final numbers for your caterers and let them know about allergies, etc.

g n i n n a ing Pl

Wedd checklist www.aberdeenphoto.com

You could also pop in info about places to stay nearby; a map to the venue; and the menu so they can pre-order for slick service on the day. And remember to organise thank-you notes, table plans, and order of service, too, so that your theme flows through every little item. The other important inclusion is details of your gift list and there’re many variations nowadays. If you’re going traditional, many stores provide online lists for guests to choose from – a great solution if they’re coming from far and wide, so they don’t need to carry a gift with them. These list providers will also usually hold on to your presents until you get back from honeymoon for safekeeping. Already got all the toasters you need? Then, you could ask for money towards the honeymoon – for extra trips or experiences; pennies for a rainy day; donations to your favourite charity; or maybe something a little different, such as a contribution to a posh piece of art or a wine club subscription! Although you might feel a little awkward about asking for presents, remember your guests will want to get you something to celebrate your big day with you. In amongst this hive of wedding planning activity, you might find it tricky to get couple time – but one way to combine the two is to take some dancing lessons to prepare you for your first dance as a married couple. You’ll get time together, learn something new, get fitter and build your stamina for the main event – and probably have some fits of the giggles in the attempt! And if that doesn’t entirely help reduce the stress of preparations – get away for a weekend. Go for some pampering, get some perspective, have a rest and remind yourselves why you’re doing all this – because you want to spend the rest of your lives together. Best of luck! ♥

The biggest show in the northeast – Your Wedding Exhibition at the AECC – is a great place to see what the local experts have to offer while chatting over a glass of fizz and nibbling samples from the catering suppliers. Enjoy the fashion shows, too – a terrific chance to see how different dress styles and fabrics sit and flow, as well as the various cuts and colours! The gentlemen are not left out, with suited, kilted and booted men and pageboys modelling what’s available for them. You can also cater for the whole bridal party – flower girls, bridesmaids and mothers-of-the-bride and -groom outfits are on display, as well. All this – and competitions to boot! With 20+ years’ experience, the YWE team know a thing or two about what Grampian’s brides-to-be are looking for, so make a day (or weekend!) of it. The 2019 dates are 19 and 20 January, so pop along with your future spouse or the girls and investigate every aspect of weddings (including some you may not have thought of) in the company of around 200 wedding specialists. Check out the YWE website and social media, too, for up-to-the-minute information about who’ll be exhibiting in 2019, where to get tickets and to browse the gallery and videos. HENS & STAGS

Last Hens Stags Hurrah! & From the much-dreaded blackening to a parade of fake brides, we aren’t short of ways to celebrate an upcoming marriage in Scotland. But hen and stag nights (or weekends… or weeks…) still come up trumps for pre-nuptial celebrations!

www.elitephotographics.co.uk

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

HENS & STAGS

17

Did you know that feet-washing (with friends of the bride taking care of her toes in the symbolic art of cleansing, whilst those of the groom gave him a far rougher time) used to be a popular pre-wedding ritual? The unfortunate groom’s feet were covered in soot and feathers, which was said to represent hearth and home, and was thought to be lucky.

www.byrhea.co.uk

www.aberdeenphoto.com

Over time, other substances – like treacle, eggs and flour – were introduced and more than just the couple’s tootsies were targeted. This evolved into the ‘blackening’ we know today and is often topped off with marching the future Mr and Mrs through the local streets for all to see – and sometimes leaving them there, attached to a lamp post! Other age-old traditions for the bride- and groomto-be include the Gaelic ‘còrdadh’, an event held at the house of the bride’s father. It was all about food, drink and laughter, with friends of the happy couple bringing with them a collection of hilarious ‘false brides’. The visiting ladies were often married or elderly, so typically rejected by the groom until the bride-to-be herself saved the day by making an appearance.

18

HENS & STAGS

These days, it’s still all about making the hen or stag centre stage and generating giggles galore – but bridesmaids and best men now go all out when it comes to venue, activities, décor and fancy dress. Increasingly popular for the ladies, according to the 2018 Wedding Report from Pinterest, is avoiding the hangover and opting for a relaxing spa retreat. With this versatile option, you could pop along for a few hours of chill time during an otherwise action-packed weekend or spend your entire weekend getting pampered with your best girls: hit the gym, book in for some

preening and waste away the hours chatting in the jacuzzi. Many of Grampian’s great spas have accommodation and restaurants on site too, so you’ll never have to leave your lovely hen bubble. If booze is absolutely on the agenda, but you’ve already ticked the cocktail-making box on other hen weekends, what about a drink tour? A day out at a gin distillery is perfect for a girly get-together and, if your other half is looking for something to do on his equivalent send-off, suggest the whisky equivalent, or a craft beer tour. It means tasting all your favourite tipples – and learning something into the bargain, too! Alternatively, if your bride squad has plenty of ideas for décor, fun and games but just needs a place to make it all happen, what about hiring out a lodge or country house for the weekend? A space like this offers total privacy; provides lots of room for hiring in activities and experts (yoga or flower crown workshops anyone?); and, within reason, can be personalised to suit the style of the event – your girls can adorn the house with bunting and balloons to their hearts’ content! ♥

DRESS Bridal ESSENTIALS

Every bride wants her gown to be a true showstopper, but finding The One – not to mention outfits for your bride squad and wee ones – can be a task and a half. However, our A-Z of bridal couture ensures you’ll be armed with all the info you need!

A is for alterations Almost every bride-to-be finds her gown needs a little change here or there: even those who buy ‘off-the-peg’ can need it taken in or let out a bit at the last minute. Whether it’s a size- or style-related adjustment (you may decide to add some more bling as the big day comes closer!), rest assured that the northeast offers a fantastic selection of talented companies and individuals that’ll perfect your prized possession in no time. Get in touch with them as far in advance as you can, though – especially during peak season, as they can book up rather quickly. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

B is for ballgown With a fitted top and a full skirt, this type of dress flatters the waist and balances the body out. It’s ideal for those with a large bust – but avoid fussy bows or ruffles at the neckline and stick with a simple scoop. A ballgown also suits those with child-bearing hips and those who are pear-shaped – but perhaps steer clear if you’re particularly short. Got a bit of a round tummy? Try a flat-fronted fitted bodice that goes into a V-shape at the waist and no one will ever know!

C is for column style If you’re tall and slim, this type of dress is made for you. It can work for larger ladies too, especially if you’re well proportioned, but can be tricky for those who are top- or bottom-heavy.

D is for dressmaking Been to every bridal boutique in Aberdeenshire and not found ‘The One’ yet? Never fear – there are dressmakers here! A talented designer can start developing your gown from scratch, merging your ideas and their expertise to create a unique garment for you. With this option, you may need a little more time to allow for the dress being made and a healthy number of fittings, especially as the weight of brides-tobe is notorious for fluctuating as the big day gets closer! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

E is for empire line Ideal for disguising large hips, this style of dress is said to skim the body and looks beautiful on shorter, pear-shaped or fullerfigured brides.

F is for fabric You could easily get carried away playing with the gorgeous textiles available, but your decisions will often come down to practical things: what works best with your style of gown and which season you’re getting married in. A light, silky dress is perfect for a sunny day but could be a little draughty for winter nuptials, whilst a heavy satin or velvet number could result in a sweat fest if worn in the peak of summer. Looking for something that’s right on trend? Then head for the rail with sleek crepe dresses – the material hangs beautifully and promises a simply stunning silhouette.

G is for gloves Once an extremely popular bridal accessory, they’re now sought-after by brides keen to go for a quirky, vintage look and can be especially striking when paired with a tea-length wedding dress. If you go for the gloves, wear them down the aisle with your engagement ring on your right hand and remove them when you reach the top. Pass them to your chief bridesmaid and pop them on again after you’ve signed the register. Traditionally, you’d wear them to welcome guests to the meal then take them off them to eat the wedding breakfast. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

H is for hire Watching the pennies? What about hiring a dress or looking for a second-hand gown that catches your eye? It’ll only have been worn for a few hours and will probably come with a heart-warming story, too! Alternatively, go super traditional and embrace the vintage vibe by re-using your mum’s wedding dress. www.mikemeller.co.uk

I is for ivory, etc. Pure white is traditionally the colour of choice for your gown but this has naturally evolved over time: great news for Grampian brides-to-be who are blessed with pale Scottish skin! Off-white, ivory and cream shades are popular and ultra-flattering on most skin types and, at the moment, rose and champagne are particularly popular. However, more off-the-wall choices look great in photographs, too: in fact, we featured a GWD bride in a beautiful black gown just a few years back!

J is for jewels Don’t forget to accessorise your gown with some jawdropping jewels. Think about how you can incorporate your wedding theme: keep it minimalist so that your dress really shines or, for something a bit different, ask your mum or grandma if they have anything they can hand down to give your jewels a sentimental status. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

L is for lingerie Good quality (and gorgeous!) bridal underwear is well worth the investment as what’s underneath can make all difference to how your dress looks – all brides want to look smooth and seamless! So, get measured by an expert for a bra or take your designer up on the option of having cups sewn into the gown – some can also add on tiny clips that’ll help keep the dress in place. When it comes to the bottom half, pants or tights with control panels over the tummy can be handy – sucking in your belly for photos is the last thing you want to be worrying about on your wedding day!

M is for moneysaving If you’re conscious of your budget, choosing costeffective styles or textiles can be a great help. Synthetic fabrics tend to be more affordable than silks, whilst column-style dresses are naturally cheaper due to using less fabric in their design.

N is for not-a-veil person Opting out of a veil opens up options for other lovely headpieces. Tiaras and crowns are popular and can be adorned with glitzy gems or precious pearls to match your wedding theme – but be aware that they can require a lot of pins to keep them in place! For a more subtle option, look into hairclips, slides, combs and hairbands: you’ll get them from high street stores, but we’re very lucky in Grampian to have some specialist suppliers who have off-the-peg options or offer custom designs to suit your big day. Going for more of a boho look? Then call your florist! Real flowers can be pinned individually in your hair or made into an Instagram-friendly flower crown, whilst fabric flowers are a non-wilting alternative. Finally, if you’re keen to add a bit of drama, what about a few feathers? www.perfectmomentsbridal.co.uk

O is for open mind Brides-to-be come in all shapes and sizes – and so do dresses! Some girls know exactly the style they’re after but, even if you do, it’s important to keep an open mind: a dress that doesn’t impress on the hanger could be transformed once it’s on you. Similarly, you could try on the gown you’ve dreamed of for years and find it doesn’t look as you hoped it would. So, try on lots of options and listen to the advice of your sales advisor – they know their stuff!

P is for princess style Complete with a fitted bodice and A-line skirt but no seam at the waist, a princess-style dress will look fabulous on pear-shaped figures, as well as brides who have thicker waists, bigger hips or heavier legs. It’s a good choice for shorter women too, as there’s no waistline cutting the body in half.

Q is for questions Don’t be afraid to go to your dress shopping appointments armed with questions, and remember no question is a silly question! These experts are here to assist, and their advice is invaluable, so soak it up.

R is for ready-to-wear Dresses can, of course, be bought off the peg, which means they’ve been manufactured to a certain size. If you’re pinching your pennies, watch out for sample sales at your favourite bridal boutique and you could pick up a ready-to-wear bargain!

S is for support Before starting your dress-finding journey, stop and think about who you’d like to share it with. Many brides-to-be jump right in and invite all the troops along – MOB, MOG and a collection of bridesmaids – but bear in mind that too many cooks can spoil the broth and having a variety of conflicting opinions could make it difficult for you to determine what you actually feel about each dress you see. Instead, consider who you trust and who’s likely to offer an objective but honest view: often brides find this is their mum, then take bridesmaids along to see the final shortlist before signing on the dotted line.

Monochrome is big in the wedding world, thanks to Vera Wang adding black corsages, capes, shoes and ribbons to her latest catwalk collections. But it’s not just about your appearance and the décor: gothic-style food is about to hit a wedding breakfast near you, as charcoal becomes an on-trend ingredient! Alternatively, if you’re more of a ‘Persian rug and sheepskin throw’ kinda gal, the popular boho vibe will be right up your street: hello fluted sleeves and prairie-style skirts. Finally, comfort is said to be key at the moment: bridesto-be are looking to high necklines and boleros for extra coverage, whilst jumpsuits, sleeves and flats mean you can really let loose on the dance floor, even if all eyes are on you!

U is for underneath If you already have your wedding underwear, wear it to try on dresses and to fittings. But if you’re not at that stage, opt for a simple nude strapless bra and no-VPL undies. Avoid tanning beforehand, too, as you don’t want to mark the sample gowns, or your own when it arrives.

Not every bride opts for a veil but if you do, it’s worth getting to grips with the incredible variety of lengths and styles.

www.aberdeenphoto.com

V is for veils Not every bride opts for a veil but, if you do, it’s worth getting to grips with the incredible variety of lengths and styles. The most popular option is the classic wedding veil – a wonderfully long, flowing length of tulle that comes in all shapes and sizes. Meanwhile, the timeless 300 cm-long cathedral veil can add a lovely air of formality, whilst slightly shorter alternatives (church, chapel or floor length) will drape delicately behind you, leaving a small train: picture perfect. For something more practical, a ballet-length veil – also known as waltz length – falls only to the calf, whilst the popular fingertip veil works with any hairstyle and ensures any embellishments below the waistline of your gown will still be centre stage. Finally, a playful elbow-length veil frames the face perfectly and can sit over your shoulders if you’re seeking a subtle cover-up. After choosing a style, you’ll need to look at colours, how many tiers you’d like and the type of edging you’ll go for. Don’t worry if you’re boggled by all the terminology – that’s what the northeast’s specialist bridal retailers are here to help with!

W is for wee ones Dressing your flower girls will be easy as they’ll look like a fairy princess in any dress, whilst your pageboys have more options, from smart trousers and a shirt to miniature versions of the adult outfits: what about a wee kilt or mini morning suit? The issue of payment comes into question here too: it’s traditionally down to the parent of the young attendant as opposed to the bride or her parents but, these days, many are reluctant to splurge on an expensive outfit their child will wear only once. So, whatever your preference is, make it clear from the start to avoid awkwardness down the line.

X, Y and Z are for what comes next… …and that means remembering about your gorgeous gown when the big day is over! Get it professionally cleaned straight after your honeymoon (or could a helpful bridesmaid drop it off at the cleaners whilst you’re away?) before any stains become a permanent fixture. Afterwards, store it in a box lined with acid-free tissue paper (don’t forget to stuff the bodice and sleeves with tissue, too, to ensure they keep their shape) and pop it in a cool, dark and dry cupboard. Go all out and add lavender sachets, too – they’ll keep the moths away! ♥

BRIDESMAIDS

Maids

Magnificent Maids No matter how big your entourage at the altar, your bridesmaids aren’t just there for holding bouquets, rounding up guests for photos and ensuring you look a million dollars throughout the day… They’re also there to help complete the finished vision of your wedding, imagined by you so many months before, adding extra glamour and colour to your amazing plans.

With this in mind, you’ll want to ensure they look their best from top to tail – and so will they! And along the way to achieving this, you can all have a bit of fun together, helping to gel the team ahead of the main event. Before heading out to look for outfits and so forth, get the tricky question of budget and who pays for what out of the way. Some brides may have the finances to fund everything; if not, discuss if you’re paying for the dresses and the bridesmaids the accessories and other extras, or vice versa. This’ll avoid any embarrassing discussions later on.

BRIDESMAIDS

Once that’s sorted, start off the partying – sorry, planning! – by doing some research for styles in magazines (starting with GWD, naturally!) and online (Pinterest, etc.). You may already have a colour scheme in mind but consider having tints or tones of a particular shade to allow your maids some flexibility of choice. A light tone may look great on one of them, but not be so effective on another. Remember, too, that this’ll apply to silhouettes – a dress that’s designed for someone curvy ain’t necessarily gonna work on your tall, leggy best mate!

www.aberdeenphoto.com www.jonathanaddie.com

The on-trend ideas currently can help you with this, though. Separates are the way to go for bridesmaids, so they can have different necklines and lengths of skirts (or trousers!) according to what suits their shape best, but still be in keeping with the theme.

Alternatively, have the same colour of dress in different

styles, or a similar shape in

www.mikemeller.co.uk

complementary shades.

For something a bit different, you could go all black (great round Hallowe’en!) or shades of purple, and add sequins for sparkle. Fabrics might be based on location and time of year – heavier ones, such as velvet, are super for keeping cosy. Don’t dismiss floatier, romantic materials, though – layered ruffles in tulle or chiffon are popular – or go for a floral pattern for a boho look. Remind your bride squad to take shoes similar to those for the big day and nude underwear to fittings (no fake tan, please!), and give the supplier an idea about hairstyles for necklines. The northeast’s best’ll be able to advise on styles if you’re not sure – they have a trained eye for what’ll work and years of experience to draw on. Don’t forget to ask about deposits and final payments (maybe there’s a group discount possible?), and how long any alterations will take if needed. Whilst accessories such as bags, shoes and jewellery are essential, remind your bridesmaids to hit the lingerie shop for decent underwear to avoid any unsightly lurks in their outfits. It’s important to be comfortable, too, as they’ll have a long day of looking fabulous – but they’ll need room to move, breathe and eat! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Should there be any anxiety about where to begin, having a hunt through GWD and online to find the specialist northeast suppliers is a great way to get an idea of current styles, and to determine whether or not you can get the whole kit – outfit, hat, bag, shoes and maybe jewellery – under one roof. Make a note of any designers that particularly appeal and arrange to visit local shops that stock them. If you want some moral support and an extra pair of eyes to help you decide, ask the bride to tag along – it’s a nice opportunity to spend quality time together ahead of the main event. So, what’s on trend for the chic MOB or MOG this autumn and winter? Bold colours such as deep purples and blues, or reds and greens (very Christmassy!) are stunning for the colder months, but you can also go for pastels, silver or gold if you prefer them. A bit of shimmer in the darker seasons will add to the sparkle, achieved either by adding sequins or crystals. For fabrics,

When it comes to dresses, think about the length and cut. You might like a hemline that’s on the knee, calf length or maxi, depending on your body shape and personal preference. A straight or A-line skirt might suit your silhouette, whereas a long, floaty dress will let you swish across the dance floor (but check it won’t catch on your heels while you’re boogieing on down!).

Speaking of heels… Shoes can be a matching colour, neutral or a contrast. If you’re struggling to find the right tone, ask about getting a pair dyed to suit. Think about the height, too – it’ll need to be appropriate for the length of your dress (or trousers, if you choose a pant suit), but also not so high as to cause aches and pains. You’re likely to be on your feet a lot, so get the balance right between chicness and comfort.

53

consult a milliner – and your hair stylist to ensure it sits perfectly without spoiling your hairdo. Finish off the look with good underwear (so everything sits well), complementary make-up and jewellery. And if you can’t find anything that really grabs your imagination? Then go bespoke if your budget allows. It’s one way to ensure no one’ll have the same frock as you! ♥

Working your way up, you’ll need a handbag for all those little essentials – lipstick, phone and tissues. Outfits often come with accessories to match – a wonderful time saver – so you may find that perfect clutch to complement your ensemble there and then. And don’t forget your crowning glory – a hat! The best style depends on your face shape – Ballarat is good for a square face, while a Foxton would suit someone more triangular. You can also choose from pillbox, cloche, wide brimmed or fascinator – and experiment with the angle for maximum effect. Just remember you want to be seen for the all-important photos. If in doubt,

Highland Grooms Flair

When a man’s all dressed up in full kilt outfit, there’s a certain confidence and elegance that seems to shine from him, no matter what the occasion. Add in the fact that it’s his wedding day, and there may be a hint of nervousness coupled with a wide smile to add to his undeniable charm…

Throw in a guard of similarly garbed groomsmen, and they can put on a splendid display of sartorial flair for your guests as they escort the groom – on time and in impeccable fashion, we hope! – to await the arrival of his beloved. Of course, decisions about his wedding kit may be open to discussion – woe betide the groom who doesn’t consult his other half over this! – and subject to some input, perhaps to do with styles, colours, etc. However, this is one area where the boys’ll have a chance to inject their personality and ideas into the occasion. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

The earliest decision to make? Probably whether to hire or buy. If you know it’s something you’re likely to wear again, buying your own kilt outfit’s worth considering, depending on your available budget. If you’re lucky, of course, someone might make a gift of one to you – parents, perhaps?

www.aboynephotographics.com

You’ll also need to think about tartans. If you have a family one – either from your own surname or one of a relative – then your decision is easier. If not, that doesn’t mean you can’t have one – there are lots to choose from with no specific connection to a clan. For a starting point, you could hunt through the online database at The Scottish Register of Tartans (set up by an act of the Scottish Parliament in November 2008) for ideas. With corporate, fashion, military, district and commemorative designs registered as well as the traditional ones, you can see the whole range available (over 300 under the letter ‘A’ alone!) and check the restrictions on their use.

If there isn’t one that appeals to you, you can always pick a plain colour – such as black, blue or red – or try your hand at designing your own! Anyone from any part of the world can register a tartan as long as it meets the Register’s criteria. And it’s one way to ensure you stand out from your groomsmen. Just remember to allow extra time for this to be made – your supplier can advise you more accurately, but six to eight weeks is about normal, although the time of year can affect this, as well as the availability of the fabric. Marrying in high summer season? Start looking as early as you can if you’re going bespoke. Don’t think your job’s done now, though. You still have to pick the extras – jacket, shirt, socks, shoes, sporran, kilt pin and sgian dubh. The choice of jacket will depend on how formal you want to be: the most formal is the Prince Charlie, which features ornate buttons and satin lapels, and is usually worn with a waistcoat, a wing collar shirt and a bow tie.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

64

♼

GROOMSWEAR

www.deesidephoto.co.uk

For something a little less formal, you could go for an Argyll, still with polished buttons, but accompanied by a standard collar shirt and neck tie. Other options could be a contemporary choice, such as the Braemar, which is cut quite neat and has a five-buttoned waistcoat to go with it; or even simply a plain style, depending on taste. Sporrans also come in formal or semi-formal styles, or you can go tailor-made. And perhaps your intended will make you a gift of a bespoke kilt pin or sgian dubh to complete your outfit, as a memento of your big day.

65

There are many possibilities to bring together an outfit that shows your personality and, to distinguish from your groomsmen, you can add different colours to your tie, waistcoat, or the flashes on your socks (which are best to be in a tone that blends in with your kilt). Alternatively, why not have your initials stitched onto your jacket lapels? A great way to make sure you don’t lose it when you abandon it on the back of a chair while you hit the dance floor! Kilts not your cup of tea, but you’d still like to wear tartan? Don’t despair – there’s tartan trousers or trews, too! The main difference between the two is that trews have a higher waistband – and they’re often tighter in the leg and worn with the Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat. Should none of the above appeal, then you could choose a morning dress. This can either be all in grey or a black jacket with grey trousers, top hat optional! Designer suits are also a popular option, with choices such as Hugo Boss or Ted Baker available. You’ll get a selection of colours to pick – blues, black, cream – or patterned fabrics – checks, for example – and can match with a coloured shirt and statement tie. To round off the look, go for some quirkily styled cufflinks and tie pin, or a pocket watch and chain for a dash of old-fashioned class and style. Finally, remember to dot the i’s and cross the t’s with regard to payments – you need to check when and how much for any deposit, as well as the final balance. Should you and your groomsmen all choose the same supplier, why not also ask if there’s a group discount? ♥

Lucky for some… If you really want to be blown away by beautiful blooms on your big day, what better way to do it than tie the knot with the co-owner of a leading northeast florist? Claire Baxter did just this on lucky Friday thirteenth…

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

REAL LIFE BRIDE

After a romantic proposal at the top of Ben Macdui in September 2017, Claire and her fiancé Campbell Bruce, who owns Four Seasons Florist in Rosemount with his mum, had pinned their hopes on a wedding the following summer: “Friday 13 July was the only date that the venue and our wedding party were available. It’s an easy date to remember and it was very lucky for us,” laughs Claire. Hoping to keep the good fortune going, Claire had an idea of the dress she wanted and it only took a few shopping trips to find ‘The One’: “My mum and sister came to appointments with me and our favourite was Avorio Bridal in Fochabers – the girls were so friendly and helpful.” www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

She settled on a spectacular strapless A-line dress with a delicate lace top and a dreamy tulle skirt, finished off beautifully with a long train: “I loved the shape of the skirt,” says Claire. “It felt special without being huge.” And, to complete her bridal look, two friends kindly offered Claire a beautiful veil and a glitzy diamanté hair band – the perfect ‘something borrowed’. With the gorgeous gown setting a definite romantic fairy-tale tone for the day, the couple kept this vibe flowing throughout with blush pink and gold as their signature colours, reflected in the bridesmaids’ attire and the soft pink and white flower displays: “Campbell designed and commissioned the gold flower stands and the team at Four Seasons Florist surpassed our expectations, creating the most beautiful bouquets, ceremony displays, table arrangements and a flower wall,” says Claire. “I had a rough idea of colour and style but hadn’t seen the decorated rooms until the day. I was blown away by the scale and volume of the flowers, and our guests loved the flower wall.” Keeping to the theme, the couple’s card box was a greenhouse adorned with twinkly fairy lights and gold lettering, whilst Claire organised the table plan: “I mapped out the table names based on key milestones in our relationship so far, then my friend Barry Snow designed them.” The night before the big day, Claire and Campbell hosted friends at The Cults Hotel for dinner then retreated to their separate rooms in The Marcliffe. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

And the following day, as Claire had a relaxing morning getting pampered with the girls, Campbell took full advantage of the opportunity to invest in quirky wedding day transport – he and the boys were picked up in a vintage fire engine and taken to the beach for breakfast! After a game of snooker and a few drinks to steady his nerves, he greeted Claire at the altar and a humanist ceremony followed, with some special personal touches: “Our dog Spencer was there and was so chilled out – he slept for most of the ceremony,” laughs Claire. “And, instead of a hymn, we sang our own version of Caledonia called Married Life.”

A romantic fairy-tale vibe flowed throughout the day with blush pink and gold as the signature colours, reflected in the bridesmaids’ attire and the soft pink and white flower displays The Friday 13th luck continued as the sun shone for an outdoor drinks reception before the 170 guests enjoyed a luxurious feast of salmon and lobster; fillet of beef with an oxtail tulle; and a trio of sumptuous summer deserts.

The prince was said to have carefully chosen the very best blooms from the private gardens at Kensington Palace – and he even added a special sprinkle of sentiment for his late mum by including her favourite flower, forget-me-nots. But if you can’t quite convince your fiancé to swap his Saturday on the golf course for a solo expedition to the florist, you can still pinch a touch of the royal idea by asking green-fingered family members or friends if you can include some of their wild and rustic blooms in your big day. Whether these home-grown beauties take centre stage in your all-important bridal bouquet or catch eyes as part of a simple single-stem table decoration (these look brilliant on trestlestyle set-ups!), you’re ticking three boxes by sorting your flowers, being cost-effective and flattering your favourite gardener! If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, however, there are plenty of other ways to do something a bit different with your arrangements… If you’re up for veering away from the popular cascading bouquets, consider a single-stem version. It’s not just budget-friendly – it also looks cool and edgy; it shows off just how beautiful your chosen bloom is and, best of all, it really lets your wedding dress shine. You can use any flower, of course, but those with big petal-filled heads are the stars of the show: think roses, proteas, hydrangeas and sunflowers. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

That idea a little too minimalist for you? Then go green. It’s still focused on the single stem – but this time, bigger is better because it’s all about incorporating lots of gorgeous greenery, too. For your chosen bloom, think bright; it’ll really stand out against the natural shades of the leaves.

make a big statement and would look superstriking above your guest book or dessert tables, for example.

When it comes to wedding décor, dotting potted plants around the venue are a simple but stylish option. Pick shades that co-ordinate perfectly with your theme and watch the colours pop.

Alternatively, let your arrangements speak for themselves and ask your florist to craft your new initials or other nuptials-related words, like ‘Mr & Mrs’ or ‘love,’ out of florals. Bear in mind, however, that not every bloom will work for this so be prepared to take the expert’s guidance on what’ll look best.

Or, for more of a wow factor, think about suspended flowers. Hanging flower decorations

Flowers don’t have to be a stand-alone part of the décor, though.

Experience Matters Flower Vogue is regarded as one of the specialists in top wedding floristry in Aberdeen, and for good reason. Established in 1970 by her father, Kirsty Thomson, who now runs the business, joined the firm in 1989 and is looking forward to celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary in 2020. When it comes to bridal flowers, Kirsty knows that experience matters… As the longest established florist in Aberdeen, Kirsty says they haven’t just created arrangements for one generation – they have provided bridal flowers for both mothers and then their daughters, proving that their focus on high quality products and service stands the test of time. Their longstanding working relationships with the venues and hotels, can help and guide their brides through the biggest event they’ll ever organise. As Kirsty points out, it’s important that the brides have faith in their suppliers and trust they’ve got the right partner to make their dreams reality. Also, no wedding is too big or small for them. With two outlets in Aberdeen – on Schoolhill and Thistle Street, a large, experienced team of florists, and a fleet of vans to transport their amazing displays there, they’ll get to any venue no matter what. If you’re looking for an expert team to steer you through the dazzling array of blooms for your wedding, Kirsty and the team – including Bernice the cockapoo, who’s there every day, too! – have the knowledge and experience to ensure your big day is florally spectacular.

Every bride wants to look like her best self on her big day, but now’s not the time to totally transform your image – just focus on being the best version of yourself there is and, with our endless experts in the northeast, you’ll have no trouble doing just that! www.aboynephotographics.com

Hair Finding a bridal hairdresser is often one of the top priorities after booking the ‘biggies’ – like your venue, photographer and band, as the northeast’s fabulous stylists get booked up months (if not years) in advance! You’ll need to brief them on the style you’re after and, if you’re going for a veil, tiara or hair comb, let them know, too. They’ll most likely ask you to bring it to your trial, so they can give you a taste of exactly how you’ll look on the day. If a headpiece isn’t your style but you’d still like a little sparkle up there, how about jewel-studded hair? The latest trend in wedding ’dos, your stylist will be able to tailor these little gems to suit, whether you’re after a luxe and glamorous look or a more relaxed, boho style. Why not source jewels in the theme of your wedding: moons and stars for autumn nuptials, for example, and snowflakes for a festive ‘I do’? Messy updos are still majorly on trend and, for brides who want to let their hair down, soft waves with a sweet side parting is a popular option.

BEAUTY

Beauty Beauty’s not just all about makeup: the modern bride needs to think about all aspects of her appearance, from slotting in a couple of extra gym sessions to ensure the gorgeous gown flatters in all the right places (some gyms and trainers even offer weddingspecific sessions!) to getting those gnashers camera-ready (similarly, some northeast clinics offer bridal bundles for teeth whitening, straightening, etc. to ensure you’ve got a winning smile on the big day). But, when it does come to beautifying the face, talented local make-up artists are also rather in demand and are worth getting booked in with in plenty of time.

Whilst some brides take the opportunity of getting as much make-up as they can out of their expert, others are opting for a more of a fresh-faced and ‘barely there’ look. This season, it’s all about having an ultra-dewy complexion (remember to ask your make-up artist about the best skincare routines for the lead-up to your big day!) and swapping bold lipsticks for subtle smudges of lip gloss. But it’s not all understated: the eyelash is still king with even the natural-look brides sporting long, lush lashes as they walk up the aisle.

Scent Have you thought about your wedding perfume? A special wedding day association you can savour forever through the sense of smell? It’s best applied to the inside of the elbow and wrist; the dip of the collarbone and the navel, whilst behind the ears is best avoided. Remember when spraying, though, that some products can damage fabric, so apply it well before you pop on your dress and give it time to dry. JEWELLERY

Jewels Ring, Ring

Traditionally, those proposing are advised to spend about a month’s salary on an engagement ring, then get down on bended knee and present their partner with something that’ll completely blow them away. But these days, many people aren’t too sure on their other half’s taste and ring size, so making the choice together is becoming increasingly popular…

Either way, no matter how the engagement ring (and its good friend the wedding ring) land on the third finger of your left hand, they have massive symbolic significance and will be a permanent fixture. This means choosing them is a big decision, and one that can take time. Never fear, though; we’re here to help with the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions from brides- and grooms-to-be…

90

JEWELLERY

www.jonathanaddie.com

What’s the most popular type of engagement ring?

What else should I think about besides the stone?

The classic setting is the ever-sparkly diamond solitaire, which gets its impressive glimmer from its type of cut, known as round or brilliant. Diamonds have long been a symbol of love, prized for their brilliance and incredible hardness, but there are plenty of other beautiful stones too, should you wish to add a splash of colour to your finger: sapphires, rubies, emeralds and amethysts are all elegant options. Remember though, like everything else, engagement rings are totally susceptible to trends and there’ll always be something new and interesting available: at the moment, the asymmetrical ring is turning heads.

The next most important factor is the metal you’ll have the stone set in, whether it be 18-carat gold, platinum or something in between. The style of the setting becomes crucial here, too: will you go for the prong, where tiny metal claws keep the stone in place, or a bezel, where a rim of metal surrounds the gem? Alternatively, there’s the cluster (small stones border a central one in this design) and the pavé, where almost no metal can be seen between the gems. With so much choice and lots of new terminology, it’s important you take your time and try on lots of styles to find out what works for you.

JEWELLERY

What if we want something a bit different? There’s a never-ending choice of rings on the market, and don’t forget that even if the style has been mass-produced, its stone placement will be unlike any other. But if those in the stores aren’t quite doing it for you, consider going off-piste and sourcing a unique antique ring.

How do I then pair my engagement and wedding rings perfectly? Much of this comes down to personal preference. Traditionally, jewellers would advise making sure the metals and gems complement one another but this can mean different things to different people. Currently, many brides are choosing to mix their metals – pairing a platinum engagement ring with a rose gold or yellow gold wedding band, for example, to create a contemporary edge. Don’t be scared to be a little creative here – and if your idea isn’t going to work, your jeweller will let you know and be able to suggest a suitable alternative.

www.deesidephoto.co.uk

www.simonclubb.com

Wedding rings often look plain – how can I make mine more interesting? A simple wedding band can look very striking next to a more intricate engagement ring but, if you wish to add detail and personalise, you could embellish with stones, patterns or engraving. How about adding the wedding date, your initials or some words that are special to you as a couple? Alternatively, for something a little more edgy and superpersonal, why not capture your partner’s fingerprint on the band? This could be applied to the inside or the outside of your precious metal and, of course, coupled with additional engraving. In fact, you could take it a step further: some jewellers can take a sample of your handwriting and add that to your design… Wow!

What if I want to design my own from scratch? Then you absolutely should! Many couples commission an expert (of which we have plenty in Grampian!) to design and make their rings, especially for them. If you know exactly what you want, they’ll be able to bring your ideas to reality – but make sure you take heed of any advice they offer: your desired style may look great, but not in the metal you imagined, for example. Alternatively, if you haven’t quite thought up your dream design, they’ll explore your preferences and tastes to come up with some clever suggestions.

www.aberdeenphoto.com

Would jewellery make a good gift for our bride and groom squads? Definitely! For the girls, it’s a no-brainer: get them something they can team with their outfits on the day, then wear time and time again. You could buy them all the same pressie (earrings or a sparkly hair clip, perhaps?), but don’t forget to take individual styles and preferences into account, especially if someone doesn’t have their ears pierced! How about sticking to one stone and metal, but choosing a ring for one girl, a bracelet for another and a necklace for your last lady-in-waiting? When it comes to the lads, our excellent northeast jewellers have impressive collections of fine gifts, from hip flasks to kilt pins: tie it in with the wedding theme or get it engraved so they’ll never forget the part they played in your special day. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

And finally, a couple of top tips for during the ceremony: • Give the best man something to pop the rings into to make sure they’re safe and easy to grab hold of – no one likes that awkward fumble captured on their wedding video! • During the ceremony, remember to switch your engagement ring onto the ring finger of your right hand so your left is free for its new addition. And, if it doesn’t quite fit that digit, pass it to one of your maids for safekeeping. • Don’t worry if your wedding ring doesn’t slip on as seamlessly as you imagined – saying ‘I do’ on front of an audience is a high-pressured situation and that can often mean sweaty palms! Just laugh it off – it’ll break any tension and give you a giggle when you look back at your wedding photos.♥ www.byrhea.co.uk

Top Weekend You might think that life can't get much better when you're in glorious CancĂşn, strolling along the beach at sunset with no one else around, but it certainly did for Stephanie Dickson when her boyfriend Gary Mann got down on one knee! From there, it was back to Aberdeen to find the venue of their dreams.

“In our eyes, the castle speaks for itself,” smiles Stephanie, who met her husband-to-be at work back in 2014. “From the minute we walked in, we both knew Drumtochty was the place – it gave us the fairy-tale wedding we always dreamed of. The location was perfect as it was secluded, and St Palladius Church was breathtaking. It also gave us the option of having a ‘weekend wedding’ where our guests would arrive on the Friday and depart on the Sunday.” It just got better from here on for the duo: “We booked the date on our first visit and, during the two years that followed, we became very close with Nikki, the general manager. She and her staff were fantastic, and no request was too small.” Taking advantage of the opportunity to be king and queen of the castle for a fun-filled weekend, the couple kicked off the celebrations with a hog roast on the Friday night with their nearest and dearest, then invited friends to join later on for drinks and games. Stephanie spent the following morning in a haze of relaxation and excitement with her bride squad, who she’d popped the question to via a “Will you be my bridesmaid?” cookie cake – super cute! Hair and make-up arrived bright and early on Saturday and it was time to get the glad rags on – beautiful blue for the girls and a spectacular white fitted fishtail Mark Lesley gown for the bride. “I’d been so excited to go dress shopping,” explains Stephanie. “I had appointments all booked up but, taking myself by surprise, I chose my dress in the first shop I went to. I always knew what I wanted and the minute I tried on my dress, I knew it was the one. I loved the pattern and the beautiful open back and, when it caught the light, it just sparkled away.” She added a diamond-adorned cathedral veil, gorgeous Jenny Packham shoes and a hairpiece, then headed down the road to meet Gary (dressed to impress in his Graham of Menteith Weathered kilt and tweed jacket) at the idyllic St Palladius Church for a non-religious ceremony. The newlyweds and their 70 guests made their way back up to the castle with the sound of bagpipes in the background for a tipple or two before dinner was served – a sumptuous wedding breakfast with options sure to suit every guest: roast tomato soup www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

or traditional Scotch broth, followed by either a roasted sirloin of Scottish beef or buttered baked chicken with haggis. Sweet tooths were absolutely satisfied when it came to the choice of deserts: a much-loved sticky toffee pudding or a wonderful warm chocolate brownie. As dusk set on the castle, a further 20 guests arrived, just in time to see the new Mr and Mrs’ first dance to Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé: “Ever since his album came out, we fell in love with that song and, when he did the duet with Beyoncé, you heard the song from the woman’s view, too.” The rest of the evening involved a mix of pop and R&B tunes, plus a spot of ceilidh dancing to add that essential Scottish vibe. “Seeing everything we planned for two years coming together with all our family and friends beside us made a fantastic weekend,” says Stephanie. “And, after everyone left on the Sunday, we travelled down to Glasgow to stay at Malmaison before flying out to Dubai for four nights, then on to the Maldives for ten, staying in a water bungalow in the Indian Ocean.” ♥

Gorgeous in Greens The shiny evergreen colours of holly and ivy leaves conjure up the sights and smells of winter, adding a dash of the Christmas spirit to your wedding. For a natural theme to your nuptials, dramatic emeralds and jades can add depth to your floral displays, make your best girls look a million dollars and add panache to the groom’s accessories. HOTELS

Heavenly Hotels Hotels When it comes to picking a hotel to host your wedding, you’re going to be spoilt for choice in the northeast. From country house hideaways set in vast grounds with the backdrop of hills and their own golf course to art deco or majestic granite-stoned city gems with grand ballrooms, every taste and size of event can be catered for. Deciding which of them’s the perfect spot for your particular big day will take some thought, then, so for tips to make that easier, read on…

The most important factor, aside from budget, in picking the right hotel for your wedding – whether you’re having the whole event there or just the reception – will be the size of your guest list. A dainty little venue with a small event space won’t work if you’re expecting every aunt, uncle, niece, nephew and all your cousins once, twice or even three-times removed from each corner of the globe.

Equally, if you’re going for the small and intimate vibe with around 50 guests, a ballroom that can hold 200 might feel like you’re holding a cosy dinner in Wembley Stadium! So, keep this in mind when you start researching possible venues and make sure you also check out GWD for potential places; ask for recommendations from family and friends; think of hotels you’ve visited for dinner or a weekend away (maybe somewhere that holds a special place in your hearts?); or root around on the Internet and in magazines for inspiration. Online galleries and info about the wedding packages available will give you an idea of what might be on offer, but remember you won’t really get the feel of a hotel’s suitability for you until you visit.

If going straight for an appointment makes you worry you’ll have to book on the spot, why not attend an open day or wedding event at hotels you’re interested in first? You’ll get a chance to have a nosey around the facilities, chat informally with staff and find out what they can and can’t do for you without the concern of having to commit there and then. And you might even pick up a great offer on the day – such as a midweek wedding discount – that’s just too good to resist.

Once you’ve whittled your list of favourites to a manageable size, make dates to meet with the wedding coordinators. The first question to ask: Are they available on the date you want? Be flexible if you can on this – it’ll make finding a venue easier. Otherwise you may have to be very patient (for years potentially!) if your hearts are set on a specific day. Once that’s settled, see if you think you’ll be comfortable working with them and then discuss what’s possible at their venue within your budget. Although many’ll have ‘off the shelf’ packages pre-prepared, there’s usually flexibility in items such as the menu choice – remember to ask about special diets, a children’s menu if you’ve got little ones coming, and any other extra costs involved – and décor. Hotels can provide table linen and chair covers for you, for example, but if they don’t fit with your scheme, ask if you can arrange for your own specialist to dress the reception (bearing in mind that there may be restrictions, if your venue is a listed building, for example, or to preserve precious items).

www.deesidephoto.co.uk

Our air-conditioned Ballroom is tastefully decorated so you can host your wedding reception in comfort and style. With a large dance floor and a bar inside the room, you will also have the perfect surroundings for your evening celebrations, accommodating up to 250 guests.

A WONDERFUL START TO YOUR JOURNEY TOGETHER In addition, our Premier suite is perfect for a small intimate dinner or even your wedding ceremony. We promise that our dedicated staff will take care of your every need. We will provide you with your own wedding co-ordinator to make sure that nothing is overlooked and we will only ever have one wedding per day, ensuring that you are in the best possible hands.

There’s every chance that, if you haven’t found all your suppliers yet, your coordinator can also suggest people they’ve worked with before. The added bonus of this is, of course, that they’ll know the hotel and its surroundings really well already, which can minimise preparation and planning. For instance, if your photographer’s done weddings there before, they’ll already know the best locations for great shots – whether that’s within the grounds or at a nearby park or garden – and it’ll be easier for them to liaise with both you and the coordinator as there’s an established relationship. When you’re sure you’ve found the ideal wedding venue, get down to discussing the other details for your big day. While a hotel may be able to accommodate different types of ceremonies – religious, humanist, civil and others – it’ll probably be down to you to organise the celebrant to be there and get all the legalities covered to make your marriage official.

You’ll also need to check about deposits, minimum numbers, when final payments should be made, penalties that might be incurred if you cancel, and if there’s complimentary or reducedrate accommodation for you and the rest of the bridal party either before or after the wedding – or both. Often the honeymoon suite’s included on the wedding night, but this may depend on whether yours is the only event that day. Talking of which, if another couple is marrying on the same day as you, it’s best to find out how the hotel plans to manage this to ensure good service for both. Not keen on sharing the limelight? Find a venue that offers exclusive use – one wedding only per day.

www.jonathanaddie.com

Remember also to ask about preferential rates for your guests. This can be especially handy if you’re marrying somewhere off the beaten track and/or have family travelling long distances to join you. The hotel could set aside rooms for them – but check if you’re liable for any that aren’t taken up beforehand (there may be a cut-off date), so

there’re no nasty surprises when you get the final bill. And if they have a gym, golf course or other activities on site, ask if your guests can access them – a great way to keep people entertained before the wedding and possibly an incentive for them to extend their stay.

For out-of-the-way venues, it’s also worth asking about the best mode of transport for guests – not forgetting that you’ll have some who’re there for the whole event and some just for the evening. If your ceremony isn’t on site, ask if the coordinator can recommend someone to get them all there and back again, too. When it comes to the catering, Grampian’s hotels have some of the finest chefs around and a fantastic local larder to draw on, too! Discuss the menu with them and the coordinator, including what they can provide for vegetarians and gluten-free diets, and ask about smaller portions for children or older guests who won’t manage a full meal. A bespoke menu should be possible through negotiation – but it may also impact on price. Make sure you check the costs up front – and don’t forget about drinks. Get advice about wines that’ll complement your chosen dishes; ask about pre-reception tipples and a glass of bubbly for toasts; and suss out alcohol-free options for the designated drivers and other non-drinkers, too. If you’re considering bringing in an outside caterer, you’ll need to find out if that’s acceptable to your chosen venue and allow them to liaise to organise use of facilities, etc. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

ACCOMMODATION

Accomodation Staying Over

As Aberdeen’s Skene House Whitehall relaunches after a £320,000 refurbishment and the Copthorne reveals its brand new club rooms, it’s time to remind GWD readers why our local serviced apartments and hotels are absolutely worth a look when it comes to sourcing accommodation for the bridal party and wedding guests… www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.skene-house.co.uk

The best favour you could do for your wedding guests: Bigger accommodation.

Face it, if you’re getting married, you want your guests to have the best time ever. A grand venue. A delicious wedding breakfast. A well stocked bar. A band that will entertain people on the dancefloor until their feet can dance no more. Beautiful favours. The list goes on. But when it comes to accommodation, that’s where you can really go to town. With Skene, guests get their very own apartment, with their own front door, their own kitchen, living room, bedrooms and bathroom. It’s more than a getaway. Skene guests can literally live away. ACCOMMODATION

Home from home without lifting a finger:

www.millenniumhotels.com/en/aberdeen/

Serviced apartments offer fully fitted kitchens, lavish lounges, spa-style bathrooms and beautiful bedrooms so guests can truly relax and make use of the space, whether that means cooking your own meals, putting your feet up in front of the TV or letting the wee ones spread out their toys to their hearts’ content. Meanwhile, plush hotel rooms offer bathrobes, slippers, minibars and smart TVs – perfect for a pre- or post-wedding chill! And, with both options, when you head out in the morning, housekeeping will pop in and ensure the place looks as good as new for your return!

Excellent services on tap:

You’ll have the convenience of accessing a whole host of amenities at the touch of a button – from laundry, car parking and concierge services to spa, gyms and glorious private gardens.

www.millenniumhotels.com/en/aberdeen/

They’ve got the connections: If your guests are

coming from afar, they’re likely to be a bit baffled when it comes to organising their transport to and from the wedding, as well as sourcing hairdressers and make-up artists… plus finding somewhere to get a great glass of wine! But at a serviced apartment or hotel, special requests are welcomed and the staff are more than happy to pass on recommendations, bring in services for you and share discounts or freebies. At the Copthorne, for example, booking a club room entitles you to breakfast in their West End Bistro and a drink and snack in the bar.

Packages to suit: With hotel weddings, staff tend to

reserve rooms ahead of time for those attending – and block bookings can often result in a fabulous discount. Meanwhile, if your guests want to use your wedding as an excuse for a cheeky long weekend, they’re likely to get a pretty good deal with a serviced apartment. The handy on-site facilities mean they’ll be able to keep the costs down, too: making breakfast for themselves instead of dining out every morning, for example. And, if you fancy a minimoon in the area, this style of accommodation is the perfect hideaway – you’ll have all you need in one place, complete with that all-important ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign! However, if your wedding venue is a little more off the beaten track, your coordinator will be delighted to share a recommended list of nearby accommodation, from budget bed and breakfasts to luxurious lodges. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

CASTLES & STATELY HOMES

Prized Castles Properties

It could be because of tightening purse strings or due to the desire for a truly personal celebration but, whatever the reason, the small and intimate Scottish wedding (generally defined as having no more than 50 guests) has seen a recent surge. The ‘micro-wedding’, which tends to have just 20 invitees, is also creeping into the wedding circuit – and a castle or a stately home in Grampian is the perfect place for these special styles of nuptials.

Whether you want a large-scale ‘exclusively yours’ event or a wonderfully small and intimate celebration, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect place to wed when you explore the northeast’s impressive variety of castles and stately homes…

An alternative to hiring a big, purpose-built space, couples can make themselves at home in these magnificent buildings and will often find the owners or wedding coordinators extremely accommodating: some venues can be hired on a room-by-room basis, for example, which keeps costs down and ensures guests at a wee wedding don’t feel lost (or get lost!) rattling around in an unnecessarily large venue.

You’ll have staff and caterers waiting on you hand and foot, too, so you’ll really feel like the king and queen of the castle – but do check whether services like these (food, bar, etc.) are organised in-house or are bits of ‘wedmin’ that you’ll need to take on… and bear in mind that some venues have a list of preferred suppliers you’ll need to stick to, too. As well as plying your guests with exquisite food and drink, you may wish to offer some unique entertainment and venues like these often come with a ready-made opportunity for an unusual guest experience – you could offer private tours of the nooks and crannies during the drinks reception, for example. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

On that note, these beautiful properties tend to be full of quirky and eye-catching collections and furnishings that can really ‘make’ the space, so you can go easy on the décor: that’s one job off the to-do list, as well as a handy little money saver. Remember, though, that these are often highly prized historic landmarks or someone’s cherished home – do check for any restrictive terms and conditions, such as popping heel protectors onto the ladies’ stilettos to preserve the floors.

Dream Venues Venues

As soon as you have that rock on your finger, booking the big day is likely to shoot straight to the top of your to-do list – but don’t rush in. Take our ‘five Ws’ into consideration to make sure your venue has the wow factor…

Have you always imagined saying ‘I do’ on a scorching summer day? Or do you envisage a cosy Christmas wedding with snowy scenes, hot chocolates and gorgeous fur stoles? For some, a season, a month or even an exact date could be a deal breaker, but for others it’s not so important. If the latter is the case, why not use it to your advantage?

Peak wedding season can come with a big price tag so book off-peak and score a handy discount. Do keep the weather in mind though: is a venue that’s tucked away up a long, winding road the best idea for the middle of a potentially snowy winter? And if you’re dreaming of a glorious outdoor ceremony, will there be an alternative space inside if Mother Nature doesn’t play ball?

www.aberdeenphoto.com

Where You can marry pretty much anywhere these days, but do remember to make sure your venue has the appropriate licence for your service. Hosting your ceremony in one venue and the reception in another? You’ll face some extra costs – more hire fees and, most likely, transport – but you can win back some pennies by being creative; taking your ceremony flowers to use on the top table afterwards, for example.

Who It’s unlikely you’ll have an exact guest list at this stage, but it’s ideal to have a rough idea because there’s no point falling in love with a teeny tiny intimate venue only to find out that your other half has a big batch of second cousins you need to find space for. Equally, if you’re planning an intimate affair, a vast barn or airy marquee could totally drown your small guest list. Don’t forget, too, that some venues will have minimum and maximum numbers.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.cowshedrestaurant.co.uk

What Before visiting your shortlisted venues, check out what’s included and what you need to supply. Are you looking for a package deal covering a wealth of food, drink and décor, or a blank canvas where you can really let your creative juices flow, but must factor in costs for the likes of hiring tables and stocking the bar? Make sure there aren’t any limitations that interfere with your plans either, from noise restrictions and curfews to bans on fireworks and confetti.

EVENT DECOR & ACCESSORIES

Decorous Decor Delights

Just as you’ll be dressed up to the nines on your big day, your venue can be spruced up to ensure it sparkles and delights, too. With lighting, flowers, centrepieces and a little bit of magic, you can create a romantic dream world as the backdrop to a memorable day.

Your venue may set the tone for decorations, of course – industrial chic won’t necessarily fit with a baronial mansion! And certain locations will give you more scope to let your imagination run riot, especially if it’s an open space. However, you’ll have to check with your venue’s staff to see what’s allowed as there may be restrictions if your wedding’s in a National Trust property, for example, to protect it. Once you’re clued up on what you can and can’t do, you’ll be able to hunt through GWD and the Internet for the best northeast suppliers to help you realise your vision.

One of the simplest ways to add drama to your reception is, of course, lighting. From twinkling fairy lights and candles for a romantic mood – winter or summer – to uplighters and spotlights for a dash of glamour, you can adapt your lighting to match either the location or a theme. If you’re in a castle ballroom, why not add spectacular candelabra as centrepieces for a touch of Cinderella chic? Or perhaps you fancy a spot of Hallowe’en-style mood lighting this autumn, so how about standing candelabra with real flames and pumpkin lanterns draped in a cobweb or two?

And don’t forget to illuminate the outside as well – a path of hanging glass jars filled with lights can give an effect of evening fireflies and light your guests’ way to their seats. Floral displays can make the space, too. Depending on the style of your nuptials, you could opt for DIY bouquets of wild flowers in jam jars for a boho look or artistically arranged sprays on white columns if you fancy something more formal. Arches add a focal point to the entrance to the ceremony (both indoors and outdoors) and on-trend long, low table wreaths can adorn the whole of the top table. Weather permitting, you could add a swing draped in blooms – a great way to not only entertain your guests, but also provide a perfect opportunity for some relaxed photos before and after the reception. The timing of your wedding can offer ideas for adding to your décor. For a spooky 31st October theme, you could drape your tables and chairs in black linen, suspend ghosts from the ceiling, shape your place cards to look like witches’ hats, use cauldrons of ice for keeping the drinks cool, and leave the odd broomstick lying around (handy for cleaning up at the end of the day?!).

For a Christmas event, why not have your favours in gold and red baubles, or hang up a stocking or two for your guests? Add pine cones and gingerbread men place cards to sit on green tablecloths with red napkins, dust everything with some artificial snow and get Santa to take all the photos. For a bit of extra greenery, you could add in a Christmas tree – and get the guests to decorate it while you’re getting your post-ceremony pics taken. Perhaps you could even persuade your venue to get the waiting staff dressed up as elves to complete the effect! The winter months also offer scope for other imaginative set-ups. Get a projected backdrop of the frozen north, and you can have Rudolph and his fellow reindeer trotting around your reception, tinkling their bells for a bit of musical accompaniment. Go snow white with your linen and chair covers, or pick cool Nordic blues for floral displays, candle holders and sashes.

Mini polar bears can act as centrepieces and clever lighting could try to conjure up the Northern Lights overhead. Alternatively, head to the South Pole with emperor penguins lining the route to the reception and elephant seals with your table plan or menus attached. Using geometric shapes and gold, copper or brass colours, you can have sleek clean lines for a more minimalist effect. Glass lanterns with copper trim or pewter candlesticks can be used to light the tables, metallic fabrics can be draped over chairs and the walls for added shimmer, whilst kite-shaped metal holders containing flowers can be suspended above the tables. You could also add black metal chairs and use bare light bulbs to shine and glint on the reflective surfaces for an additional lighting effect.

Music isn’t the only way to get the party going, but it is usually an integral part of the main event before, during and after – from piping in the guests, to walking up the aisle, to hymns or songs as part of the ceremony, and so on. The type of ceremony you’ve chosen – religious, interfaith or humanist – will naturally influence the tunes you pick. If you’re unsure about what’s appropriate, ask your celebrant’s advice or check with family and friends. You might also pick up ideas online, where you can listen to snippets and see what matches your tastes. The options are endless – from classical greats to traditional folk tunes, and film scores to modern love songs. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Remember to find out about equipment for playing your selections. If there’s not a suitable sound system – especially if you’re using a playlist, you may need to make other arrangements. Always ask what’s possible and permitted before finalising your choices. If you’re hiring a band or musician for the reception, arrange a time to hear them play live. While recommendations are great, and the Internet means you can listen to them any time, it’s always better to get a first-hand taste. If it’s a ceilidh band, for example, you could drop in on one of their non-wedding events and see how good they are at getting everyone on the dance floor, as well as showing folk how the dances are done. It’s also worth asking your chosen supplier if they can do a themed set, play your favourites and take requests. You might want to mix and match – part ceilidh and part DJ – so all tastes are catered for, and you can fit in rest breaks (with food and drink!) for the musicians while keeping the party going! And do organise this early on in the planning process, as they can be booked up months (or longer!) in advance.

Whilst music’s an important factor in your day, there are other ways to keep yourselves and your guests amused. Hire a caricaturist to provide entertainment between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast, or a magician to go round and dazzle them during dessert and coffee. If you have a theme and your guests are game for dressing up, you could get in a photo booth. It’s a great way to get some instant memories of the day, for guests to add ‘good luck’ messages for the bride and groom, and to have a laugh in the process. Alternatively, get the giant Jenga out, or throw in quoits and croquet on the lawn: perfect for keeping the kids – both young and old – amused with mini competitions. Add some silly prizes to the mix, too! Speaking of kids… If children are coming to your wedding, it’s a good idea to source childcare for later in the evening. They may also be able to provide activities for them in case they need an escape. And maybe book someone in for any pets that might be joining the festivities. And to end the day? Venue permitting, why not punctuate your last dance with a fireworks display? ♥ www.scotthogg.com

I Do Ceremony

No two wedding ceremonies need be the same: everyone’s favourite new royal decided against having her father give her away and chose to walk down the aisle at St George’s Chapel alone, for instance. But, regardless of how you organise your ceremony, and whatever style of nuptials you opt for (religious, humanist, interfaith or secular), there are some important points every bride-to-be needs to consider…

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.simonclubb.com

THE CEREMONY

173

www.jonathanaddie.com

Have the legal requirements been fulfilled in time?

For any wedding, the couple must ‘give notice’ of their intention to wed by a certain date, so don’t miss it! Giving notice is done at the local registry office – and that means the office in the district of the place you’re getting married, not your home. If you’re uncertain about the office you should visit, your venue contact will be able to advise.

Make sure the marriage will be legal!

There’s specific wording that should be included in every ceremony, which your celebrant can advise on. You’ll need two witnesses, too: often this task is designated to the best man and maid of honour, but it’d also be a lovely job for MOB and MOG.

Don’t forget to factor fees into your budget!

Save some pennies for your marriage certificate and to pay the celebrant.

Have you discussed the ceremony content with the person conducting it?

Each type of wedding has a different format and level of flexibility: religious ceremonies, for example, have a specific script to follow and usually include hymns, whilst those opting for a secular wedding can incorporate their own vows and be a little more creative with their music and readings.

THE CEREMONY

Remember to ask the person conducting your

ceremony about any specific preparation ahead of the big day – marriage lessons, for example.

THE CEREMONY

175

Do you want to personalise your ceremony with a ritual? Ask your celebrant in plenty of time what the options are (handfasting and the lighting of candles are popular) and consider which, if any, best represents you as a couple.

What about photography and videography logistics? This should be discussed with both the person marrying you (make sure they’re happy with the amount of the ceremony that’ll be recorded) and the venue in which you’re tying the knot (during set-up they’ll need to ensure these suppliers have ample space to capture the best angles).

On that note, clarify just how much of the ceremony you’d like recorded. Some couples like to watch their nuptials back word for word, whilst others may only want to

www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

capture guests arriving, for example. The decision could be taken out of your hands, however, and dictated by the person conducting the ceremony or the venue.

Tell the bridal party exactly what they’re doing. This doesn’t just mean avoiding the cliché of forgotten rings. Make sure everyone knows who they walk in and out with; where they should stand during the ceremony; and, if you intend on passing your bouquet to one of your girls, ensure she’s expecting it! A wedding rehearsal the night before (ideal if you’re all staying in the wedding venue) is the perfect way to iron out any lastminute glitches.

And finally,

remember to ask the person

conducting your ceremony about any specific preparation ahead of the big day – marriage lessons, for example. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

How you cater your reception will depend partly on location. If you’re at a hotel, their wedding manager and chef can help you, and they’ll have ready-made packages to choose from. But this doesn’t mean you can’t tweak them – ask what’s possible as an alternative if there’s something you aren’t keen on. The chef can also give you tips on what’s in season – and remember to ask about special dietary needs (make sure you ask your guests to tell you too, when they RSVP). www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Marrying in a stately home? They may have caterers they regularly work with who they can put you in touch with. Or perhaps you have someone special in mind? If so, check with the venue that they’re happy for outside suppliers to come in and whether they can use the on-site facilities, if any, or will need their own equipment. Maybe a formal meal isn’t your thing… Not a problem! There are all sorts of funky ideas you can draw on. A hog roast or barbecue is perfect for a sunny

afternoon, and dessert can be provided by an ice cream van. Mini family favourites, such as macaroni cheese or fish and chips, are popular, too. Don’t forget about the little extras – canapés and a glass of fizz, for example, while the guests wait for the meal. And will your venue or caterers provide tableware, such as cloths, napkins and glasses? Remember to factor in the evening guests as well – stovies is traditional, but bacon rolls or similar are a great alternative. ♥

CAKES

Sponge Bridal Sensations

No matter what your taste in baked goods, it’s undeniably true that wedding cakes these days show there’s no limit to the magic that can be performed with flour, eggs, butter and sugar!

Gone are the days of the traditional three-tiered fruit cake with a miniature bride and groom on top… Now, you can turn your wildest designs into reality with the skills of fabulous artisan bakers, producing not only a confection to make the mouth water, but also a dazzling work of art with which to wow your guests. Before consulting the northeast’s cake specialists, though, you’ll need to think about budget, how many people you need to cater for and if there’s anyone with special dietary requirements to consider. And don’t forget to do a bit of research to find examples of what you want. You’ll also need to think about the type of sponge – fruit, Victoria, madeira; fillings – sweet or tangy, jam or buttercream; one flavour all the way through or different for each layer – perhaps a mix of chocolate, marble and lemon drizzle; and then think about the kind of icing and how it will taste, as well as look! If you’re daunted at the prospect – with so many details to consider! – then a scan through the amazing designs in GWD is a good starting place. You can also do a bit of online research, think about other weddings or events you’ve attended where a cake has tickled your taste buds, and ask around for recommendations. The staff at your venue may have a few pointers, for example. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

182

CAKES

Once you’ve got a few people in mind, make an appointment to discuss your ideas with them – pics are useful! – and decide if they’ll rise to the occasion for you! You can also check out their portfolios, ask about costs and what’s possible within your budget, plus talk about delivery, set-up at the venue and the little necessities to make your cake a star attraction. When you’re happy you’ve got the best baker for the job, they can go away and design the cake, and then arrange for taste tests for fillings, etc. Just remember to alert them to any allergies that need to be accommodated, such as nuts, gluten, eggs etc. Alternatives are easier to find these days and offer super results. If you fancy following the latest trends in wedding cakes, decoration is going marbled, with unusual textures; arrangements of organic sugar flowers; and a mix of green leaves and metallics. Naked cakes are still an option, or go for a tower of macarons coloured to match your bridesmaids’ dresses or venue décor.

CAKES

Want to add the surprise element? Cakes can be constructed with treats hidden inside that pour out when you cut it. Or get a 3D cake incorporating multi-coloured, edible Lego® bricks. Marvel’s Avengers fan? Not a problem – have a multi-tiered extravaganza featuring designs of all your favourite characters or films. You can even get yourselves immortalised as your heroes in sugar for the top! Perhaps you’d prefer something more subtle, though, such as images of places or events that are special to you both. This can be achieved in silhouette form. Alternatively, add ruffles, bows and edible flowers in different shades of one colour for a towering delight. You can also include your cake as part of a bigger work of ‘art’, by incorporating it into a themed dessert table. With your cake as the focal point, it can be surrounded by mini cupcakes, apple pies, sundaes and any other pudding you fancy. Or why not make it into a sweetie shop with candy canes and chocolate-dipped strawberries?! ♥

TRANSPORT

Transport Happy Travels Arriving in style at your wedding venue’s easily achieved with the help of the northeast’s transport specialists, but they can also get you there in a quirky manner should you fancy making a dramatic entrance…

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.deesidephoto.co.uk

Of course, location will have an effect on what’s possible – it’s not so easy to land a helicopter on the roof of a small, city-centre hotel. But that doesn’t mean the bride can’t arrive in a horse-drawn carriage or the groom and best man in an Aston Martin, if the mood takes them – providing an extra-special photo op in the process! Traditionally, if the ceremony and reception are at separate venues, three cars is the norm: going to – for bride and whoever is giving her away, bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride, and groom and best man (unless they’re coming under their own steam); coming from – bride and groom, both sets of parents, and the best man with the bridesmaids.

www.portra.it

However, any variation on the theme’s acceptable… The groom and groomsmen might fancy arriving en masse on Harley Davidsons, or the bride could arrive on a bicycle made for two – also a nice twist for the honeymoon getaway! If you have a themed wedding, match your transport accordingly: a stretch limo with bubbly on ice for a bit of glamour; a camper van for a sixties’ touch; a tractor for a rustic flourish; or a boat if you’re marrying by water… Well, if it was good enough for a king or queen, why not you?

Blue Skies For a crisp and sunny winter's day feel, why not drape your wedding in shades of brilliant blues? Choose from early morning pastel blue tinged with pink, through the glorious blue of a bright yet chilly midday to the darker hues of early dusk, melting into an indigo night studded with stars for inspiration. Infuse your jewellery, make-up, flowers and wedding cake with it, and add a touch of embroidered lace to add a touch of cool Nordic blues to your wintery theme...

Camera Photo Ready! When it comes to wedding photography, there’s a lot you need to know… So, we’ve pulled together some of the most important advice every bride-to-be needs to know ahead of – and during – the photo planning process…

Trust your instincts It can be easy to get carried away with patter (and low prices!) at a wedding fair or think someone will craft beautiful photographs just because you’ve formed a quick bond with them so, as simple as it sounds, it’s important to make sure you do actually love the work of your photographer! You’ll know quickly whether you do or don’t – even looking through the wedding photos of a friend will help you get a feel for what you like and don’t like. Candid and journalistic snaps can be popular with those who are self-conscious on camera whilst other brides- and grooms-to-be lust after staged, dramatic shots. There’s absolutely not a right or wrong style – your decision simply depends on your personal tastes, so as long as you and your other half agree on what you want from your photos, you’ll be fine! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Find the right package When you start speaking to your potential photographer, it’s important to get a clear idea about what exactly they offer. Firstly, some coverage lasts all day – from getting ready in the morning until the first few songs on the dance floor – whilst others start at the ceremony and head off after the meal. So, check out what’s included in the packages they offer and only pick one that’s right for you. Do ask, though, if you can amend the offering, either now or down the line – many couples book their wedding photography at least a year in advance so preferences and needs can have changed a little by the time the big day rolls around. Most photographers offer basic packages that can be customised to some degree so clients get exactly what they want and can afford when they receive the snaps, not months before. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

If you have something specific in mind – a spectacular drone shot of the venue, for example – make sure your snapper has the necessary equipment and licence (not just anyone can offer drone photography!) to capture it for you before you sign on the dotted line.

www.jonathanaddie.com

www.scotthogg.com

And, finally, remember that an honest and good photographer will never try to oversell, so don’t ever sign up to something you’re not happy with!

Once you’ve picked the one for you, think ahead about the different kind of pics you’d like – are you looking for a big batch of posed family photos or a collection of more natural observation shots? You’ll most likely have chosen your photographer on the basis that their style suits your needs, but that doesn’t mean they won’t benefit from further direction. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Would you like to stage a reaction shot, for example? A ‘first look’ photo (when your hubby-to-be or dad first clap eyes on you) is an increasingly popular choice, but it’s important to plan it beforehand, especially if it’s to be set up between you and your fiancé: you’ll need to find a time that the three of you can sneak off in your wedding attire pre-ceremony to capture the special moment. You’ll also want to think about post-ceremony – most couples choose to pop off with their photographer to get a selection of more intimate shots as they bask in that brand new ‘just married’ bliss. Firstly, where do you want to do this – within the venue and its grounds, or will you need transport to go to a secluded spot nearby? Secondly, what sort of style are you looking for here? Again, it comes down to posed versus natural or, of course, a combination of both. Finally, is there anyone else you want to incorporate in these more private pics – a dog or child perhaps? www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Group photos are important, too; a special opportunity to capture people who’re probably rarely together in front of a lens – but they need a bit of consideration. Do you want a photo of the all the wedding guests together? These can look really cool but the time it takes to organise can mean missing out on a couple of other shots as a result. Think about it like this: is it something you’d consider framing? www.jonathanaddie.com

Likewise, too many post-ceremony formal family shots can be time-consuming (and you want to give your snapper the opportunity to capture casual candids, décor shots and entertainment pics before the reception begins!), so it’s worth trying to keep staged shots to close family. And remember that your photographer won’t know the difference between your great aunty and your grandma, so make sure you’ve got a member or two of the bridal party on hand to be the runner and fetch those required for the next few

arrangements ahead of time.

Reception time and, if you’ve got an ultra-DIY wedding on your hands, you’ll want to make sure every teeny tiny detail is captured on camera! So, let your photographer know the bits and bobs you want highlighted, and allow a slot in their schedule to pop into the room ahead of time www.jonathanaddie.com

before guests get in the way… and potentially interfere with your

beautifully crafted displays! Finally, if you’re worried that friends or family could be tempted to hog the photographer for their own use (the focus should be on you, of course!), advise the snapper beforehand that they should feel free to politely refuse any requests not on your original briefing note.

Make use of the expertise A good photographer is only too happy to guide their client, so take their practical advice – you might be surprised to realise that, because they spend a whole day with a couple, they can actually offer really valuable advice on the wedding as a whole, from planning to timings. This means that when it comes to preparing for circumstances beyond your control (even if you’re the most organised bride known to man!), your photographer can probably assist – when it comes to the weather, they’ll remind you that a rainy day doesn’t mean ruined photos and might suggest having some quirky wellies or stylish brollies on hand, just in case. They may also advise checking out some photo-friendly spaces within the venue too, in case the elements really do disappoint on the day.

www.deesidephoto.co.uk

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

And remember that, although many things can’t be controlled and may well have an impact on your images, your photographer is a creative genius who’ll ensure you still receive exactly what you were promised: a spectacular set of wedding pics!

Engagement snaps are absolutely worth it Yes, a formal engagement shoot (also known as a pre-wedding shoot) probably sounds a little cringeworthy for those who are camera shy and yes, it’s another item to be added to that evergrowing ‘wedmin’ list… But you’ll thank yourself for it afterwards when you’re feeling more confident thinking about the wedding day shoot – and have a gorgeous collection of photographs to boot. For most couples, it’s the first time you’ll have been part of a professional shoot so it’s a great opportunity to get a feel for being a model for the day and learn how to be comfortable in front of the camera – or, even better, behave as if the lens isn’t even there!

www.elitephotographics.co.uk

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

The session is a brilliant chance, too, to build a relationship with your photographer and get an insight into how they’ll work with you on the big day. And they’ll expect you to be a little nervous so will help put you at ease.

Not sure on location? It’s usually the couples’ choice, and they tend to go for somewhere special – a proposal spot of a favourite hidden gem, for example – but if you’re stuck, your snapper will be only too delighted to recommend. A deserted beach makes a stunning summer backdrop whilst tall trees deep in the forest can set the tone for autumn. Alternatively, your venue may let you pop along to their grounds – an ideal opportunity to get used to posing in the surroundings you’ll be in on your wedding day, and a chance for the photographer to work out which angles work best at which time of day, etc. Still think it could be too awkward? How about coming up with a clever way to distract yourselves during it? Try to go through the alphabet and come up with a fruit that starts with each letter, for example. Sounds silly, but it’ll have you giggling (hence smiling beautifully and naturally; perfect for photos) in no time!

Don’t worry – be happy! When it comes to the big day, remember to sit back and enjoy yourself because, just as happiness shows in photographs, so does stress and unease. Photographers can only shoot what’s there, so if you’re looking tense, frustrated or angry, no amount of editing will fix it. And, whilst it’s tempting to ask photographers to avoid capturing your insecurities (not like the profile view of yourself, for example?), you could just be making their job harder for them and preventing them stealing what could have been a beautiful shot!

Don’t forget to feed them! Your photographer tends to take their break whilst you and your guests are devouring the wedding breakfast so remember they may like something to tuck into, too! Some snappers stipulate on their contract that a meal must be provided and some caterers ask if any suppliers will need fed, but if this doesn’t happen, remember that it’s courtesy to offer them something to eat and drink – you’ll want to make sure they’ve plenty of energy left to cover your epic first dance!

www.aberdeenphoto.com

The aftermath When the big day is over, there’s still the important matter of the end result! If you’ve opted for an album package, you’ll most likely need to book a time with the photographer to go through the images (and choose the type of album if you haven’t already agreed on this).

However, if you’ve gone for digital only, it’ll be a case of eagerly awaiting a link via e-mail to download the images, or watching the letterbox for a USB stick to arrive. If you’ve gone down the digital route, it’s worth asking your photographer where they’d recommend printing your photos – not all printers are the same and you’ll certainly want high quality for these beautiful images! They can also advise on how best to display them if you’re looking for a little guidance – much better to do it this way than randomly ordering. ♥

“Our suppliers started off as names in a book but, after months of planning, talking and laughing, they’re very dear friends that have shared the most special day of our lives,” says Sara Bowring, who tied the knot with fiancé David Strachan at Cluny Castle earlier this year… Sussex-based scuba divers Sara and David had known one another for years before deciding to take their friendship to the next level on New Year’s Eve, 2015. And, after exactly a year of dating, when the couple were up spending Christmas with David’s family, he got down on one knee during a dog walk at Crathie Kirk, by Aberdeenshire’s beautiful Balmoral Castle. “I love castles and, being in Scotland, I wanted to visit as many as possible,” says Sara. “Nothing is grander than Balmoral… or so I thought. I hadn’t seen Cluny Castle yet!” Thanks to GWD, though, it didn’t take long for her to come upon it. Venue hunting had been the top priority and opting for the northeast of Scotland was a quick decision: “David’s family live here, plus it offers more choice of spectacular venues, including castles, of course!” After his next trip to Aberdeen, David returned with a copy of GWD and, when Sara let it fall open, the Cluny Castle advert was the first she saw: “It was love at first sight and I called them straight away – but there was a very important question to be asked: would they allow dogs?” When Sara realised her two fur babies would be more than welcome and that they could stay at Cluny the week before the big day (offering them plenty of time to set up and giving their far-flung guests the opportunity to make their wedding into a holiday), she started planning her glamorous castle nuptials, complete with a vibrant colour scheme, gorgeous DIY details and, of course, a ballgown fit for a princess. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Sara found ‘The One’ after trying on just four others: “I knew it was my dress: it had the sleeves, the sparkle, the skirts, the train, the volume and the beads. Then I spotted a beautiful pair of diamanté heels… I knew they were going to kill me, but I had to have them!” She topped off her dazzling dress with a bespoke tiara and a glitzy bouquet full of sparkle, then headed down the aisle to meet David for their religious service in Cluny Castle Chapel. A sunny drinks reception on the spectacular lawns followed before the newlyweds and their entourage tucked into a meal of traditional Scottish fare, which included haggis bonbons with a Lochnagar drizzle; a Cambus O’May tartlet – made using local free-range eggs; and a delicious lamb shank, slow cooked with juniper berries and set on an Arran mustard mash.

From here, The Big Show (another GWD-sourced supplier!) took over, whilst the guests delved into the DIY sweetie table and had fun with the magic mirror from Fabby Fotos: “Everyone enjoyed dressing up with a prop and posing for the camera: it was a great asset to have for the evening,” says Sara.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Tidying Up After the Event

Before speeding off to the airport, harbour or station post wedding, make sure you’ve arranged to ‘tidy up’ the last-minute details – including important legal formalities. Firstly, check you’ve booked your transport to the starting point for your honeymoon, alongside travelling outfits and packed bags. You don’t want to arrive at your romantic getaway without your passport (if needed) and toothbrush! Speaking of passports… If you’re changing your name, make a list of places you’ll have to tell, such as the bank, your employer, etc. You might need your marriage certificate for this, so check what’s required beforehand and do it in plenty of time. If wedding togs need returning, ask your bridal team to help take back kilts, and arrange for the cleaning and boxing of your dress, if you’re keeping it.

www.deesidephoto.co.uk www.simonclubb.com

They might also help tidy up the venue – taking flowers, instant cameras and other items away, if you ask nicely! Many gift list services already provide this, but check they’ll hang on to presents until you return, and find out what to do with any duplicates. You can also get thank-you cards ready for sending out, and let guests know the gallery address for photos – check with the photographer when it’ll be ready. And, if you’re merging two homes, don’t forget to sort out removal firms and dates, too. As a married couple, it’s also advisable to sort out wills to reflect your change in status, so make an appointment to see a solicitor as soon as you can. With all that in place, you can head off for a stress-free romantic break! ♥

HONEYMOON

Bags Packed! Honeymoon

Sandy beaches, blue skies, oceans and cocktails? Glaciers, waterfalls and snowy mountains? Roman ruins, castles and oldworld charm? Whichever vistas take your fancy and whatever your budget, there’s a perfect honeymoon destination out there for you! When picking your romantic hideaway, you might want to consider first: Is this really us? There’s no point in booking a mountain retreat if you don’t like climbing hills, or a glamping honeymoon when you love room service!

and little extras – excursions to places of historical interest, a wine-tasting tour or a romantic boat trip – through their contacts, and with arranging visas and insurance. Their knowledge could lead to a better-than-expected trip for your budget.

There are plenty of options for differing tastes and budgets, though, such as: boutique hotels in Portugal; Arabian romance in Morocco; African safari; a cabin in the Dordogne; a private island or ice hotel in Sweden; the bright lights of Vegas; or a cruise on a super yacht!

Think about timing, too. You might prefer a mini-moon closer to home first, then head off on a once-in-a-lifetime trip later in the year, allowing you to make the most of better weather or opening up the choice of locations available. You can save up a bit more, too – or why not ask your guests for contributions to the honeymoon, instead of the usual presents? That way, they can help create special memories for you! ♥
