Welcome
I can’t quite believe that just over 25 years ago the Grampian Wedding Directory became a thing!
As hard as it is to believe a few decades on, at that time many couples simply didn’t know what wedding services were on their doorstep – or how to contact the people providing them.
So, I became really passionate about connecting those getting married with the incredible wedding suppliers covering this part of Scotland. Now, so much has changed. We’re better connected than ever before. The wedding industry has never looked better. And suppliers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire stand out for all the right reasons.
The GWD team loves pulling together each and every issue, sharing what suppliers have to say and showing off beautiful weddings that have taken place locally in all shapes and sizes. GWD remains the only magazine in northeast Scotland that helps couples plan their special day – in print, in digital and online.
To everyone who has helped GWD hit this milestone I send my sincere thanks. And I look forward to working with you all for many years to come. Reflectively humbled after 25 years!
Enjoy
March 1999 1999
Grampian Wedding Directory (GWD) was born to connect those planning a wedding in northeast Scotland with local suppliers. Until then most headed south to book vendors because those in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire didn’t have a way of putting themselves out there (apart from the occasional hotel wedding show). Things were about to change, though…
September 1999
The first ever issue of GWD was printed. To-beweds in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire grabbed copies from the likes of Wedding Fayres, Hotels, Shops etc.
April 1999
Work began on finding the perfect words, images and design to inspire local couples. And the doors opened to suppliers who wanted to showcase their wedding offerings in GWD. A very exciting time!
May 1999
GWD’s first website domain was registered. And it still links to today’s website – but looks a little different, of course.
"there's my son "
"there's my daugter"
My daughter was BORN Oct 1999
and shares a unique connection with the magazine, with them both turning 25 this year.
January 2000
Support from local wedding suppliers was immediate, incredible and fast-growing. So, page numbers increased each issue for the first few years. Woohoo!
SEPTEMBER 2001
Just as the suppliers developed their tech (photographers back in 1999 used firm that needed developing and videographers had big, bulky tape cameras), GWD’s printing processes evolved. It became purely digital with superquick printing and binding.
MAY 2000
The first GWD website was launched, acting as mini-websites for advertisers to show couples what they could offer them.
June 2000
GWD was firmly established as an essential planning tool for anyone organising their big day in the north-east – and a big champion of wedding suppliers in the area.
2014
MARCH 2020
Covid stopped us all in our tracks
The GWD website got a serious glow-up to include a digital copy of each issue, a blog, competitions, supplier profiles and more.
GWD went digital for couples and the industry returning to print in Nov 2021. YWE returned in March 2022 and then resumed the Jan slot once more in the last 2 years.
November 2021
The pandemic eased; GWD returned to print and wedding planning options started to grow again.
March 2022
After a pandemicimposed pause, Your Wedding Exhibition returned.
2007
Your Wedding Exhibition, which had been going strong at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom every January, moved to the AECC. It doubled in size in its first year there.
January 2020
Your Wedding Exhibition moved to P&J Live.
March 2024
copies of GWD over the last 25 years would have been closer to 300,000 copies had it not been for Covid.
After 25 years with GWD, I couldn’t begin to tally up the number of hotel wedding shows I’ve attended or the many couples I’ve discussed wedding plans with but it’s been a remarkable
GWD remains very much a team effort
which over the last 25 years has changed. I am very grateful to everyone from family, friends, the graphic designers, editorial experts, administrators, delivery team, placement students past and present who have played their part in helping making GWD a thing!

Perfectly It All Worked Out
As a wedding planner at Cluny Castle, a magnificent fairytale venue in Aberdeenshire, Natalie Ross is no stranger to organising a set of nuptials or three. So, team GWD couldn’t have been more excited to hear all about her expertly organised two-venue wedding to Sam Macneil in July…
After meeting in the gym, Sam scored top marks in the proposal stakes when he got down on one knee at the top of the Eiffel Tower. His big question and the accompanying big sparkler from Jamieson & Carry came as a complete surprise to Natalie. But it was, of course, a big yes! And the bride-to-be even returned to Paris for her hen do. Sam, meanwhile, jetted off to Vegas for his stag party.
The couple gave themselves two years to organise their big day; Natalie knowing from experience to leave plenty of time to plan a wedding – especially as she was (naturally) doing it all herself.
Natalie knew she wanted a colourful and fun celebration so got florist Jill on board to bring her super-bright vision to life. She worked on the wedding stationery herself, and this included very gorgeous dachshund-themed place cards in honour of the couple’s pooch, Pepper (who popped in for post-ceremony photos in the cutest tartan bandana).
Excited to hit the bridal boutiques, Natalie had a good idea of what she’d like beforehand. She found ‘The One’ – a showstopping satin off-the-shoulder gown with an overskirt full of sparkle – at La Novia in Edinburgh where she remembers feeling “like a supermodel”. She kept her accessories simple and elegant; a diamond necklace from her mum and a beautiful pair of Manolos from her husbandto-be.
Sam had a vision for his groom style too and was very lucky to have his kilt made for him by his grandmother. He teamed it with a navy jacket that complemented his Macneil tartan and got the very best of care at Deeside Kilts.
Natalie had ‘proposed’ to her four ‘maids and one junior bridesmaid with special gift boxes then found them dreamy sage green dresses that fitted perfectly with her theme.
The couple and their bridal party stayed at Logie the night before the wedding and enjoyed a “super-relaxed and fun-filled” morning getting ready. Arriving at their fairytale castle to tie the knot, Natalie made her way down the aisle to the romantic sounds of a string quartet and remembers seeing Sam – who was “very emotional” – as
a highlight. They said ‘I do’ in a humanist ceremony and incorporated a couple of rituals – drinking from the quaich and handfasting, where they joined the Ross and Macneil tartans.
Afterwards it was back to Logie for celebrations with a live saxophonist bringing all the cool vibes. An exceptional three-course meal followed before the four speeches (Natalie’s uncle Rod, Sam, the best man and bridesmaid Maxine), which were very emotional.
Next up, an outfit change from Natalie, into something that’d give her full movement to dance all night. And a first dance with meaning. “Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do is our favourite song to dance to in the kitchen,” says the bride.
“The reception was bursting with overwhelming love and joy,” she adds. “We had a DJ, a sax power hour and a surprise performance from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. That was a definite highlight, bringing so much energy and laughter.”
Reflecting on organising your own marriage as a wedding planner, Natalie says she’d always dreamed of preparing for her very own big day. But equally she was happy to put her trust in the wonderful suppliers she’d worked side-by-side with for years. “I was super-relaxed and told them all to do their thing,” she remembers.
“The last couple of months were tricky as I was super-busy with Cluny weddings. But staying on track with my planning binder really helped. And I made sure to start the DIY tasks well in advance as they took some time. It all worked out perfectly.” ♥

Getting StartedPreparation is Key
We talk lots about planning the perfect wedding day. But what if it doesn’t go as you hoped? From stumbling over vows to unexpected changes in weather, it’s important to have a plan in place for what you’ll do if something goes wrong. After all, it’s far too special a day to spend worrying over little mishaps.
Take note of these tips… And bookmark the page because you might just want to pop back for a re-read if there’s a bump in the road during wedding planning!
Give yourself a priority refresher
Yes, the fact you had a few fizzes too many the night before and, therefore, have a fuzzy
www.paper-petals.co.uk
head first thing is a bit of a regret. Yes, it’s frustrating that one pesky guest was a nonexpected no show and they left a space at a table. But will you remember this in ten years’ time when you’re celebrating an anniversary? Or when you’re talking to your children about your wedding day? Probably not. You’ll remember the most important things, like marrying the person you loved whilst all your other favourite people were around you.
Stop stressing with someone special
Getting irritated by the little things? Don’t beat yourself up. It’s a high-pressure day between trying to talk to every guest, making sure you eat enough… And everything else! So, take a minute out with your partner or a bridal party member. It’ll ground you and remind you of what’s important (see above point)!
Plan photos in advance
Streamline your on-the-day photography process as much as possible by talking it all out with your professional beforehand. That
means nailing down the style you want, highlighting any worries or confidence issues, and breaking down all the formal shots you’d like captured. Pre-assign a bridal party member to gather people for each photo to save you a job, too.
Plan for the worst weather-wise
Saying ‘I do’ outdoors might be the dream but if you’re tying the knot in Scotland you’re going to need a contingency plan. Or perhaps a few! If it’s light drizzle on and off, or simply a drop in temperature, having umbrellas, blankets and ponchos on hand would be good. Plus, check all outdoor décor is safely secured. For total downpours, it’s wise to make sure there’s an indoor space you can take over. At the other end of the scale, if there’s an unexpected heatwave stock up on fans and ice lollies!
Remember, you can’t control everything Breathe. And let go. Unfortunately, some things just happen and, no matter what, they can’t be fixed. Refer back to the first point!
Afterwards…
• Reflect on the good: It’s easy to focus on the negatives but they will be hugely outweighed by all the wonderful things that happened on your special day. Focus on those instead (and remember those happy memories are what will have stuck with your guests).
• Talk it out: If something really got to you, speak to those closest to you. They’ll reassure you – and they may not even have noticed whatever it was, which is bound to make you feel better!
• Speak to suppliers: With our incredible network of suppliers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire we’d really hope there are no discrepancies in their service. But if there were to be any issues, the best thing to do is raise it directly and work through it together. They’ll hopefully be able to explain the situation and restore the good relationship that brought you together in the first place. ♥

Bridal Couture Dress Dreams
Finding ‘The One’ isn’t just about your partner. It’s also about the outfit you’ll wear on the big day! Walking into your first bridal appointment might feel overwhelming but these insider tips will help you navigate the process, making your journey to perfection smooth, enjoyable and fun.
Beware of fitting feels
The idea of finding your dream outfit often comes with visions of happy tears and instant connections but it’s important to remember that it’s not always love at first sight. Many brides expect an immediate emotional reaction when it’s ‘The One’ but the process can take time. And it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit confused or unsure at first.
The key is to keep an open mind and trust the process. Sometimes the perfect option reveals itself after a few (hundred!) tries – or even after you see yourself in something from a different angle.
So, enjoy the moment, relax and know that the magic might unfold gradually as you get to know how different outfits make you feel.
Get ready for a surprise
Spoiler alert: The style you’ve always envisioned might not be the one you fall in love with! It’s common to walk into the first boutique with a specific idea, only to hate it –and be captivated by something completely different. Perhaps you’ve always pictured yourself in a sleek, modern gown but find yourself enchanted by a romantic ballgown. Or maybe you were certain lace wasn’t for you until you saw how it complemented your overall look.
The best plan is to keep an open mind and be willing to try on styles outside your comfort zone. The right dress may be one you never expected to choose, so embrace the adventure!
Managing your budget is crucial
No-one wants to fall in love with an outfit that’s way out of their price range. So, have a clear budget in mind before your appointment (even if this means having a tricky conversation with parents who plan to contribute to your day) and communicate it to your consultant upfront. You’ll find some ask for your budget at the time of booking so they
www.jdyerphotography.co.uk
www.ivorygrace.co.uk
www.sambrill.co.uk
www.ivorygrace.co.uk
can host you in the part of the boutique that has outfits at your price point. This approach guarantees everything you try on is within your spending range. And you can focus on what truly matters –how you feel in what you’re wearing.
Remember, there’s a perfect look for every budget so don’t feel you have to overspend. We promise you’ll find something that makes you look and feel amazing without any financial regrets.
Don’t be blinded by sizes
Bridal sizing can be a shock to the system as wedding dresses often run smaller than regular clothing sizes. So, save any fitting room anxiety by noting now that needing larger size than you’re used to is completely normal.
The most important thing is how the outfit you’re trying fits and flatters your body, not the number on the tag. If it makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, that’s what truly matters.
Remember the power of accessories
The right veil, shoes and jewellery (whether it’s a delicate veil that adds a touch of romance or a pair of statement shoes that bring out your personality) can transform your outfit into a complete bridal ensemble. But don’t worry – you don’t have to start thinking about this during your first appointment. Get the main bit sorted first, then move on to the nice-tohaves!
Don’t be afraid to mix and match because accessories are your chance to add that final layer of flair and individuality to your look. Maybe a bold piece of jewellery or a quirky headpiece is just what your outfit needs to feel completely ‘you’.
There’s a practical side to accessories too. A stylish wrap or jacket can keep you warm during outside nuptials or photo shoots, while a chic clutch is perfect for stashing your essentials, like lipstick for touch-ups or tissues for happy tears. You could even incorporate something meaningful, like a family heirloom or vintage piece, to add a sentimental touch.
Timing is everything
It’s easy to underestimate how long it takes to find, order and alter your outfit so make sure you get started early on. If time allows, start shopping at least nine months before your wedding day. This allows ample time for making decisions, multiple fittings and any alterations that may be needed – plus space to explore different options without feeling rushed.
If you're planning a whirlwind wedding and need a quicker turnaround, don’t fret, you’ve still got plenty of options. Many bridal shops
www.ivorygrace.co.uk
www.byrhea.co.uk
offer off-the-peg dresses or rush orders for those on a tighter schedule. And keep an eye out for sample sales, where you can nab a gorgeous gown at a bargain price and take it home the same day.
The key is to stay organised, be flexible and have a chat with your seamstress or boutique to make sure any tweaks or alterations can be sorted in time for your big day.
Avoid opinion overload
While it’s natural to seek opinions from loved ones, we all know too many voices can lead to confusion and overwhelm. So, when it comes to hitting the bridal boutiques, choose a small, trusted group that understands your style and will support your choices yet be totally honest with you.
www.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
The final decision is yours, though. While input from friends and family can be helpful, it’s important to stay true to what you love. After all, you’re the one who’ll be walking down the aisle so what you’re wearing should reflect your personal style – and make you feel confident and beautiful.
Go for the feel-good factor
Ultimately, the most important aspect of choosing your wedding dress is how it makes you feel. It’s easy to get caught up in trends or the opinions of others. But the right outfit is the one that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If it’s giving radiant and confident, it’s a sign you’ve found ‘The One.’ Trust your instincts and listen to your gut. The perfect ‘fit will not only flatter your figure but also resonate with who you are as a bride. When you feel good, it will show in your smile, your posture and your overall confidence on the big day.
Embrace alterations
Bridal gowns are typically made with extra fabric in the seams to allow for adjustments so don’t worry if your dress isn’t a perfect fit right off the rack. And even if something is nearly perfect on you during your first fitting, alterations are almost always necessary to achieve that flawless fit. A little nip and tuck – from adjusting the length to letting out seams – can make all the difference in how your dress looks and feels. A skilled tailor will customise your ‘fit to hug your curves in all the right places – just be sure to budget both time and money for this.
Consider the context
The setting of your nuptials can greatly influence the style and practicality of your outfit so keep your venue and the season in mind when choosing your wedding look. A heavy satin ballgown might be stunning in a grand cathedral during the winter, for example, but it could feel overwhelming at
www.sambrill.co.uk
www.ivorygrace.co.uk
a beach wedding in the summer sun. And whilst a chic jumpsuit is totally a vibe for a slick city wedding it might not be right for those planning a super-traditional day.
Think about the practical aspects too – a lighter, flowy dress might be more appropriate for a summer garden wedding while a structured, long-sleeve gown could be perfect for a winter ceremony. So, will you be outdoors? Is there a lot of walking or stairs? Will the weather be hot or chilly?
Answering these quick questions will help you narrow down your options for the fabric, length and silhouette that will not only look amazing but also feel comfortable throughout the day. Of course, the experts in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s top bridal boutiques can help you out with that too! ♥

BridesmaidsNo Matchy-Matchy Here!
According to fashion retailer SilkFred, the biggest nontraditional wedding trend of 2024 – and one set to continue – is mismatched bridesmaids’ or bridesmens’ outfits. Here’s how to pull it off with your besties…

In times gone by, the tradition was to have the bridal party looking like carbon copies, regardless of body shape, colouring or personal style – and of course it was women and dresses only! Thankfully, times have moved on and most couples are focused on keeping their best buds happy and comfy –hurrah!
One sure-fire way to do this is to go with the mismatched trend – but you need to make sure they don’t look like every other wedding guest. Fashion experts at SilkFred recommend staying flexible but having clear direction. So, let them choose the outfits that feel right, provided they fit with your overall theme and vision.
That could mean picking…
• A colour palette – Try earth tones like terracotta, sage and marigold or jewel colours, such as ruby, emerald and sapphire.
• An element of the outfit to keep the same – Length, colour or neckline?
• Accessories that match – Create cohesion through shoes, jewellery or bouquets. GWD loves the idea of matching pearl necklaces or bracelets. They’re bang on trend and the colour is a subtle, elegant nod to the wedding day.
Before they hit the shops, don’t forget to give them a budget. And do some research, too. What are couples on Insta doing for their mismatched outfits? It’ll give you a feel for the direction you want and some pointers to your crew to stick to.
Post-shopping, you’ll want to get a heads-up on how they all look together. There’s a fine line between expressing their personalities and totally clashing! This is the perfect excuse for a wine night – get them all round for a tryon as soon as you can. ♥

Mums'Outifts A Guide for Glam Mamas
Stay on trend and feel fabulous from the first toast to the last dance with our guide to the hottest wedding styles. Whether it’s the perfect dress, chic accessories or a statement headpiece, here’s everything you need to nail your look on the big day.
Shorter dresses
Tea-length dresses are perfect for mums who want to look stunning without stealing the spotlight. Falling just below the knee, this classic cut is incredibly flattering for most body types, accentuating the waist and creating a gorgeous silhouette. Paired with the right heels, this style will have you feeling both elegant and comfortable as you mingle, celebrate and dance the night away.
Flutter sleeves
A must-try trend, it’s easy to see why the flutter sleeve is big right now. This sleeve type gently flares out from the shoulder, creating a soft flowing effect. Typically, these sleeves are loose and often made from lightweight fabrics, which allows them to drape gracefully over the arms, adding a touch of playful elegance. Available in a range of designs, from airy chiffon to structured lace, there’s a flutter sleeve for every style.
Petal action
If you’re going for a softer, more delicate vibe, floral designs are your best bet. Think cascading flowers along a hemline or a garden of petals across a bodice; intricate embroidered patterns or bold, vibrant blooms, these details add a romantic flair that’s impossible to resist.
Let’s not forget the accessories!
If you’re keen to be on trend this wedding season, look for bags with bold colours or unique textures – we’re thinking metallics or beaded designs. These can really make your outfit pop! But remember the golden rule: if your outfit is simple, go bold with your bag but if your outfit is already elaborate with plenty of details, opt for a simpler style to avoid overwhelming your look. Same goes for shoes, ladies!

The power of headwear
Choosing the perfect fascinator or hat can be a game-changer for your wedding look. Here’s how to pick the best one for you:
1. Think about the style of your outfit. If you’ve opted for something simple, a bold fascinator can add that wow factor. But if your dress is already detailed, you might want to choose a more subtle piece. Same rule as bags and shoes – make sure those also complement each other.
2. Consider your face shape. If you’re on the rounder side, go for a hat with a tall crown to add some length. Oval faces are lucky enough to suit most styles, so feel free to experiment. Petite? Avoid anything too large or you risk being overshadowed by your own accessory!
3. Don’t forget about comfort. Make sure whatever you choose is secure enough to stay put during the festivities without being too tight that it rubs or hurts. After all, the last thing you want is to spend the day adjusting your hat instead of enjoying the celebration! ♥
GroomsYour Ultimate Guide to Groomswear
As the groom(s), you want to look your best. But with so many different outfit options and combos, it can be tough to know where to start. For 25 years we’ve been helping you find the perfect outfit, so here’s everything you need to know today…

Should I rent or buy?
If you're on a budget or simply not sure you'll wear a kilt again, hiring is a great option. You get a wide range of styles to choose from and it's quicker than buying. However, you might not get the perfect fit – and you won't have a keepsake to cherish.
Investing in your own kilt gives you a statement piece that can be passed down through generations. You can customise it to your exact taste and ensure it fits like a glove. But be prepared to spend a bit more and figure out storage afterwards.
www.thehoggs.co.uk
Find your perfect match
Selecting the right kilt can be a tough decision. There are so many to choose from! So, consider these factors:
• How it’s made: Hand-stitched kilts are generally considered to be of higher quality, with a more luxurious feel. However, they also come with a heftier price tag. Machine-made kilts are a more affordable option without compromising on style.
• Weight: Kilts come in different weights depending on the fabric used. Heavyweight kilts are typically warmer and more durable (great for a winter wedding), while medium-weight is lighter and more comfortable for summer nuptials.
• Pleating style: This can significantly impact the kilt's appearance. Box pleats are most common while knife pleats offer a sharper look.
• How it fits: A well-fitted kilt is essential for comfort and style. So, get measured professionally – the experts will make sure it reaches the middle of your knee. They’ll also check the waist fits snugly, about belly button height.

The finishing touches
A kilt is only as good as its accessories. Here's what you need to know:
• Kilt pin: A must-have to keep your kilt in place and add a touch of style.
• Sporran: A pouch that is traditionally worn at the waist with a kilt, used to carry things like keys, money and your phone. Sporrans come in a variety of styles, including leather, fur and seal skin.
• Kilt hose: These are knee-high socks made from wool or a similar material. They are typically worn with a kilt hose garter (a strap that goes around the top of the calf to hold the hose up).
• Sgian Dubh: This small knife; a symbol of Scottish heritage, is traditionally worn tucked into the sock. Make sure you check local laws as carrying a knife can be restricted in some areas. If this is the case a plastic one can be used.
Groomsmen glamour
Your bridal party doesn’t have to be a carbon copy of you but coordinating their outfits can create a cohesive look. You could go with identical kilts for a classic, coordinated vibe or different tartans for each person, while still keeping an overall theme with matching colours or hues. Alternatively, mix and match – let them choose their own styles and accessories for a more relaxed look.

Alternative groomswear
If a kilt isn't your thing, there are plenty of other stylish options, like being suited and booted. Stay ahead of the curve with these trends:
• Bold colours: Say goodbye to the classic navy and grey. This year, we’re seeing vibrant hues like emerald green, burgundy and deep blue.
• Textured fabrics: Add depth and interest with fabrics like velvet, tweed or linen.
• The return of the threepiece suit: Channel your inner James Bond! This classic look is making a comeback and offers a sophisticated and timeless style.
• Personalised touches: Make your outfit truly unique with personalised details like monogrammed cufflinks or embroidered initials.
One final pointer: The most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Do that and you’re already winning! ♥

LOVE Our Story
From a wildflower dream to a kilted pup stealing the show, Aurora and Ross’s big day at Logie Country House was the perfect blend of love and laughter with a touch of tartan magic.
The bride explains how they turned their wedding into the ultimate celebration of their love story...
“When we met in a club in Aberdeen back in 2017 neither of us could have predicted we’d be planning a wedding at the stunning Logie Country House just a few years later. But here we are, reminiscing about a day that couldn’t have been more perfect – or more us.
Ross popped the question in our first home together. He totally surprised me with a beautiful ring from Finnies the Jeweller, inspired by his mum’s one.
We both knew right away that Logie was the venue for us. Grand yet cosy, it just felt right. The planning took just under two years, thanks to the post-pandemic backlog, but it was worth every second. We did it ourselves with some expert guidance from Gillian at Logie, making sure every detail was perfect.
We envisioned an intimate, relaxed party where everyone could let loose and enjoy themselves. We wanted it to feel like the start of summer, bursting with wildflowers and vibrant colours. The venue décor was already stunning – we simply added our own themed touches with help of our florists, Sam and Sarah.
Finding the right dress was a bit overwhelming at first. I’m not the kind of person who’s dreamed of a wedding gown since childhood. But at Ivory Grace, Emma made the experience easy, helping me find a dress that was simple, classy and totally me. My accessories were sentimental and special, and included my mum’s pearl earrings and some gorgeous finds from Etsy.
My bridesmaids looked stunning in olive/sage green dresses, each picking a style they felt comfortable in. Ross had his outfit sorted from the start; his own Cochrane tartan. But let’s be honest, our dog Scooby in his very own kilt stole the show outfit-wise!
The night before the wedding, we had a barbecue at Logie with our closest friends and family. The next morning was all about music, laughter and keeping things relaxed. We knew the ceremony would be nerve-wracking but our celebrant, Kirstin Cruickshank, created a beautiful atmosphere that felt like we were just surrounded by love. My twin brothers’ reading had us all in tears and was the perfect way to end the ceremony.
We snuck away with our photographer, Danielle, for a quick breather and some practice for our dip kiss photos. Meanwhile, our guests were serenaded by Mike Macdermid as they enjoyed Champagne and canapés. And because no wedding is complete without a bit of fun, Ross and one of the groomsmen grabbed the mic for some impromptu entertainment!
The meal was unforgettable, and the speeches were heartfelt and hilarious. Let’s just say the best man didn’t hold back… Ross got roasted! Our first dance to Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield was a blast, setting
the tone for a busy night ahead on the dance floor.
Looking back, the whole day feels like a dream. We’re so lucky to have had such incredible suppliers and to have been surrounded by amazing people. We’ll remember the joy and love that filled the room forever.
Our advice to anyone planning a wedding? Make sure your suppliers are on the same wavelength as you because they’re a big part of your day. And don’t sweat the small stuff. The day is about celebrating your love, so soak it all in and enjoy every moment.”

FlowersFlowers that Last Forever
Did you know that interest in dried wedding flowers has grown a massive 525% in the last five years? This super-sustainable, everlasting choice became big in 2020 and has stuck around ever since. Here’s how today’s couples are incorporating them…
Be framed as you exchange vows
A ceremony backdrop is a great focal point – and a super photo opp. How about a traditional archway with a trailing bouquet? A big display of bushy pampas? Or funky, boldcoloured geometrics?
Personalise the aisle
Aisle markers can be tied to chairs or placed on the ground. And they do what it says on the tin – but with lots of love. You could go all-out romance and scatter dried rose petals down the aisle (they make a beautiful
natural confetti, too) or add dried peonies in vases on the floor at the end of each row. Alternatively, tie garlands of preserved eucalyptus along the back of pews/chairs.
Love is in the air
Add a touch of magic with a gorgeous suspended floral arrangement. It creates the illusion of floating and will give your guests plenty to talk about as they await the to-be-weds. Alternatively, a big bold flower cloud is a great way to fill an empty space in the room.
This idea works well over dinner too, literally! Dried flowers or foliage could be suspended above dining tables – opulent and elegant but also creating a real sense of intimacy. If you’d like to go a step further, ask your venue if central light fittings can be replaced or added to with a dried flower chandelier.
Tie your blooms to your theme
• Boho couple: Go for muted, natural tones, offset with warm colours. Think bearded wheat, wild fennel, dried poppy heads and dried lavender.
• Beach venue: Set the scene with fluffy pampas, tall, grassy plumes and big palm leaves. How dreamy would this look at the end of each row in the ceremony set-up?
• Minimalist vibes: Add a few draped garlands of dried flowers – look for Helichrysum bracteatum, Acrolinium or Rodanthe.
One final point – if you love all these ideas but have zero clue how to pull them all together, we know just the people to get in touch with: Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s talented florists!
They’ll have up-to-date knowledge about all the flower trends, including this one, and will pull together potential wedding day floral looks based on your ideas. ♥

Your wedding day is a masterpiece in the making, and every detail counts. One often overlooked yet impactful touch is the perfect jewellery. Because the right pieces can elevate your look and create lasting memories.
Picture this: You’re standing at the altar, looking absolutely radiant. Your outfit is perfect, your hair is flawless but something’s missing – that final touch of sparkle. Choosing your big day jewellery can be overwhelming, but it's also incredibly exciting. Let’s break it down...
Your neckline dictates your necklace choice. A plunging neckline begs for a delicate pendant, while a high neckline can handle a bolder statement piece. Consider your dress details too – intricate lace or beading might call for simpler jewellery.
Your hairstyle will influence your earring choice. For an updo, dazzling drops or chandelier-style stunners are perfect. Wearing your hair down? Opt for smaller
studs or hoops. And did you know your face shape can also influence which earrings look best?
Your engagement ring is already a showstopper so your wedding band should complement, not compete. Consider matching metals or contrasting styles. A simple eternity band or a textured band can add a unique touch.
Incorporate a touch of tradition with something blue. Sapphires, topaz or even blue-hued pearls can add a romantic feel to your bridal look.
Remember, less is often more. Choose two or three standout pieces and let them shine.
When it comes to the gents, gone are the days of plain old wedding bands. Today's grooms are embracing jewellery to elevate their wedding day style:
• A sophisticated timepiece is a musthave for the modern groom. Whether you prefer a classic leather strap or a sleek metal band, your watch is a statement piece. Consider a chronograph or a watch with complications for an added touch of sophistication.
• Cufflinks add a touch of refinement to your suit. Choose a design that reflects your personal style, from classic to modern. Engraved cufflinks with your initials or wedding date are a thoughtful touch, too.
• A pocket square can elevate your entire look. Coordinate it with your tie or boutonniere for a polished appearance. Consider different folds for a unique touch.
• Less is more when it comes to a groom's jewellery too. Choose one or two pieces that complement your overall style and make a statement.

Beautiful wedding bands.
Huge range to choose from, or have our Goldsmith create a bespoke design for you.
Sparkle for your squad
Your bridal party deserves to shine too! Choose jewellery that complements your wedding colours and theme…
• Not everyone has the same style, so offer a variety of options. A mix of necklaces, earrings, cufflinks, watches and bracelets allow each member to choose pieces that suit their personal taste.
• Decide whether you want your wedding party to wear matching or mismatched jewellery. Matching jewellery creates a unified look, while mismatched pieces can add a touch of individuality. Could the wedding party gift come in here –two birds, one stone?
• Matching cufflinks for the groomsmen create a polished and cohesive look. Choose a design that complements the wedding style, such as classic silver for a formal affair or modern geometric shapes for a contemporary wedding.

Jewellery as the perfect wedding party gift
A personalised and thoughtful gift, jewellery can be the ideal way to thank your bridal party. Here's why:
• Personal and memorable: A tangible reminder of your special day.
• Style flexibility: From classic to contemporary, there's a style for everyone.
• Customisation options: Personalise with initials, birthstones or engravings.
• Versatile and timeless: Jewellery can be worn on multiple occasions.
• Shows appreciation: A heartfelt gesture of gratitude for their support.
What’s on trend?
• Minimalist chic: Delicate, understated jewellery is gaining popularity.
• Bold statement pieces: For the daring to-be-wed, a show-stopping necklace or earrings can be the perfect choice.
• Mixed metals: Combining gold and silver, for example, adds a unique touch.
• Gemstone accents: We love a pop of colour!
• Sustainable and ethical: Choose pieces made from recycled metals or conflict-free diamonds.
Jewellery care and maintenance
To ensure your precious pieces last a lifetime, keep your jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Clean it regularly using a soft cloth to gently wipe away dirt and oils. Avoid using harsh chemicals and be sure to remove jewellery before applying perfumes, lotions or cleaning products. For deeper cleaning, consider taking your jewellery to a professional.
By carefully selecting pieces that complement your style, dress, and overall wedding theme, you can create a truly unforgettable ensemble. Remember, confidence is the best accessory, so choose jewellery that makes you feel radiant. ♥

Who said ponytails were boring? We defo didn’t because the sophisticated pony is having a major moment. Keep it sleek, high and simple with soft waves or a gentle curl to finish off your look with a touch of romance. If you want to add a bit of sparkle, slip in some pearl pins or a delicate headpiece – your expert hair stylist will be able to advise what would work best with your outfit. Overall though, a posh pony is the perfect mix of chic and classy. And it’s practical too, especially if you’re getting wed or even just photographed outside.
Pearls, please!
If a hair-up isn’t for you but you still want something elegant and on-trend, pearls will be your new best friend. If you’re letting your locks flow free, a few well-placed pearls can take your look from ‘nice’ to ‘wow’. Our fave option is a delicate pearl headband. It’s totally timeless.
The foundation of fabulous
With all eyes on you and a day of photos ahead, you know your makeup needs to be on point – and that starts with the perfect foundation match. And the best way to make sure the wrong undertone doesn’t ruin your glow is by going to the pros. Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s expert makeup artists will be able to match products to your actual skin tone – no risk of yellow on pink or other faux pas here! For lips that last through all those kisses, consider a lip stain and layer on your favourite lipstick or gloss. And for a face that’s ready for its close-up, you’re going to want to seek out the local experts – head straight for a trusted skin guru and/or aesthetic studio. Your future self will thank you!

Amy Buchan and Douglas Garden’s love story is nothing short of magical. From a surprise proposal with a family heirloom to a celebration filled with personal touches, plus bold florals and traditional Scottish flair, their wedding was a perfect reflection of their love. Here, Amy takes us behind the scenes…
“When Doug proposed at South Queensferry Pier, I was completely taken by surprise. He had this beautiful vintage family heirloom ring, and I’ll never forget the way he looked when he asked me to marry him. It was such a perfect moment, and the fact that the ring had so much sentimental value made it all the more special.
Before all the wedding madness, we each had a getaway with our friends. Doug headed to the Euros in Germany, soaking up the football (and probably more beer than he’d admit!), while I went to Lisbon with my girls. We had the best time.
Since I’m a florist, we always knew the flowers would be the stars of the show! Doug’s last name is Garden so it made sense to bring the outside in, with vibrant florals everywhere you looked. I wanted colour — rich, bold shades that reflected late summer and autumn — but absolutely no white! Not even the linens. Without A Hitch helped us pull it together. I’m so grateful we had their support, especially with the marquee setup and all the outdoor logistics.
Maryculter House was our venue. Doug grew up nearby so it felt personal, and we loved the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Plus, with so
many guests travelling from overseas, it gave them a true taste of a traditional Scottish wedding. We loved gathering by the fire pits in the courtyard the night before for drinks and a cosy catch-up with everyone.
All the floral arrangements (apart from my bouquet, which was made by my best friend) were done by my lovely colleagues at the Flower Shop in Peterhead, and there were a lot of flowers! From the aisle to the tables, every space was filled with blooms. I wanted it to feel like you were stepping into a garden with layers of texture, colour and fragrance. It was a labour of love and being surrounded by the flowers I’d dreamed of made it all worth it.
As for the dress, believe it or not, it was the first one I tried on! The dress was called Dorchester, the same as one of my favourite roses, and it felt like fate. It was elegant and simple so the flowers could take centre stage.
The wedding day was magical from start to finish. We started with a mini-drinks reception in the marquee where guests were treated to entertainment from the drummers of Clann An Drumma. This really got the party started. It was such a great way to set the mood.
We did a first look before the ceremony and I’m so glad we did. Doug was so nervous and I knew seeing each other would help calm him down. Plus, it gave us some extra time for photos, which was a huge bonus.
The ceremony was everything we wanted; personal, intimate and full of little moments that reflected us. Caron Harper led a humanist ceremony that had everyone laughing, and we included a traditional Scottish quaich ceremony to symbolise the joining of our two families. Both of our dads joined us for that, which made it even more special.
Afterwards, we headed back to the marquee for canapés and the cutting of our stunning cake, which we served there and then. It was a big hit! We had Ross Graham playing music while our live artist, Katie McKay, sketched portraits of our guests. People loved it. It was such a unique touch and gave everyone something special to take home.
Then it was off to the ballroom for the most incredible four-course meal, served by the amazing team at Maryculter. After dinner the real party began. Corra kept the dance floor packed all night long with a mix of ceilidh dancing and some wilder moves later in the evening (thanks to the glow sticks)!
Looking back, it was truly a day to remember. My only advice to others is this: Don’t do it all alone! Even with all my experience in the wedding industry, letting go and trusting our suppliers was the best decision I made. Every single one of them went above and beyond. And because of that, I was able to just enjoy the day. It was absolutely perfect! Oh, and if you can, definitely add lots of flowers… You’ll never regret it! ♥

If you’re considering marrying in one of Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire’s beautiful and luxurious hotels, you’re on to a winner. Because they’re not ‘just’ wedding venues. They’ve got so much more to them! As such, you’re going to want to find out all you can when you visit…
We’ve pulled together 25 questions that are worth asking your friendly and knowledgeable event coordinator (who will be only too happy to provide the answers)!
1. Can you host my guest list?
Whether you want a grand celebration or a minimalist get-together, most hotels can cater to your specific needs – just ask.
2. Can you meet my budget needs? Make the hotel team aware of your budget and your dream wedding vision. They’ll try their best to tick both boxes.
• Robert Gordon Ballroom with 280-person capacity
• Maple Suite, perfect for intimate weddings
• On-site Signature Spa
• Dedicated Wedding Planner
• CHOP Grill & Bar
• 218 beautifully appointed bedrooms and suites
• Dedicated Whisky Lounge, Freedom an' Whisky
www.eastsidephotography.co.uk
3. What’s the price per head?
Many hotel packages are based on a price per guest to cover the person’s food and drink, plus other aspects that usually come as standard in this type of venue – chairs, table linen, cutlery, crockery, drinkware, etc.
4. Can you recommend a florist/photographer, etc.?
Your event coordinator’s little black book of contacts is well-worth looking at, especially if there’s a photographer who knows the grand building and gorgeous grounds like the back of his/her hand, for example.

Winter Weddings
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR TO SAY ‘I DO’
A wedding at Maryculter House is always magical. However, there’s something truly enchanting about getting married on the banks of the River Dee surrounded by frosty trees and twinkling lights.
Imagine saying ‘I do’ under a canopy of sparkling lights and shiny baubles, as you and your loved ones bask in the blissfully warm glow of our crackling log fires.
At Maryculter, we can make this picture-perfect dream come true.

5. Can we bring in suppliers?
From décor specialists to firework companies, ask what’s acceptable – and take note of anything that’s not.
6. Where can we tie the knot?
Most hotels boast a variety of spaces to exchange vows. This may be at the end of a candlelit aisle in a beautiful ballroom or under a dreamy flower arch in the landscaped grounds.
7. Where can I have my drinks’ reception?
Much like your ceremony, there are likely to be a few options. You might want to have a sunny day plan and a wet weather plan, though!
www.byrhea.co.uk
8. What’s on offer during the drinks’ reception?
Ask about your options for canapés, from the traditional (mini haggis neeps and tatties offered by waiting staff) to the quirky (an icecream cart, sushi bar or crisp wall for grazing).
9. Will you be there on the big day?
Your coordinator will be your right-hand man or woman until you tie the knot so it’s worth knowing in advance whether they’ll see you say ‘I do’.
10. Do you provide a master of ceremonies?
Usually someone from the hotel will be your MC, keeping everyone right timing-wise, doing the call to dinner and introducing the speeches.
www.jdyerphotography.co.uk
11. How will the room be setup for dinner?
Circular, rectangular, square, oval or a sweetheart table for two – ask what’s on offer.
12. Will you provide a toast drink?
Usually a flute of something fizzy, it’s worth asking whether this will be part of your package.
13. What’s on the menu?
You’re going to find some of Scotland’s finest hospitality at these establishments. But don’t be afraid to share your requests. Got a fave dessert you’d love on the day? Guests with dietary requirements? Your hotel will try to accommodate.
www.jonathanaddie.com
www.danirosephotography.com
www.byrhea.co.uk
14. How will it be served?
Expect a luscious fine dining experience with courses served by top class waiting staff. But other options may be available, from buffets to sharing platters.
15. Can we come for a tasting?
Many chefs will invite you and your partner in for a pre-wedding feast. A great excuse for a day out!
16. What about the evening buffet?
Check out what they’d typically serve. And ask whether it’s included as part of the package.
17. Do you have any stand-out spots for photos?
From enviable views to picture-perfect staircases, the northeast’s best hotels will be able to keep your photographer happy, for sure!

For enquiries please contact our dedicated wedding & events team on weddings@ardoehousehotel.co.uk/ 01224 867355
18. Can my guests stay over?
Ask how many rooms can be earmarked for your wedding. And when guests need to book by to avoid them being offered to the general public.
19. Is there a bridal suite?
The best room in the house usually has the newlyweds’ name on it and you can expect the wow-factor! From generous room sizes to views to die for to extravagant features, you won’t want to go home afterwards.

Memories to Last a Lifetime....
20. Are there any additional facilities we can use?
Golf course within the grounds? Heated pool to dip in? Spa open for a prewedding pamper? Make sure you know all the on-site hotspots!
21. Do I need to pay a deposit?
You may need to pay something upfront to secure the date. Take note of when this (and the final payment) will be due.
22. What if we need to reschedule?
This is the last thing anyone wants, and is very unlikely. But it’s always worth having a plan in place should the worst happen.

23. Will we keep in touch during the planning process?
Absolutely! In fact, your coordinator will probably suggest a catch-up schedule. But rest assured they’ll be happy to talk anytime you need them.
24. When do you need the final head count?
You’ll have to supply a final head count to make sure the hotel can source enough food for everyone, plan the room layout, etc. Find out the date so you can choose your guests’ RSVP deadline accordingly.
25. And finally, before signing on the dotted line…
Make sure you know exactly which services are included in the price, so you know if there’s anything else you need to budget for. ♥

Instant fairytale vibes
Imagine walking down the aisle in a grand hall or having your first dance under a chandelier that’s older than most modernday countries. The historic charm creates an unmatched romantic atmosphere. Many castles also come with breathtaking outdoor spaces, perfect for sunset ceremonies or cocktails with panoramic views. Don’t forget to ask about exclusive access so you and your guests can explore the grounds without interruption. It’ll turn your big day into a truly royal experience!
A space to impress your guests
Castles are built to host hordes of people, from royal feasts back in the day to your epic wedding celebration now. That said, you’ll want to take note of each venue’s capacity and compare to your guest list. Many castles offer a variety of smaller, charming rooms (look for the library, for example) and these are perfect for intimate weddings. For larger celebrations, check out the ballrooms or consider adding a marquee to blend historic elegance with modern versatility.

History adds personality
Who needs elaborate decorations when your venue is already a work of art? Castle walls tell stories, whether from battles fought, royal visits or ancient celebrations. You’ll be marrying in a place that’s been home to countless love stories before yours, and that’s pretty special. You’ll have depth and personality without lifting a finger.
Stay and celebrate
Many castles come with accommodation, so you can stay overnight for ultimate convenience – and there may be room for some of your bridal party too. From luxurious suites with four-poster beds and grand fireplaces to cosy, tucked-away rooms you’ll find a range of options. ♥

TANYA & BLAIR
Our Schivas Wedding
Blair and I were engaged on 2nd January 2021. Right in the throws of the latest lockdown at that time. I immediately started looking for our perfect wedding venue. Looking online, I came across Schivas Steading. A brand new wedding venue that was still under construction.
Although, it was essentially a building site, with scaffolding and the floors unfinished. It was so easy to envisage it complete. We loved it, and between the modern Steading and the older Schivas House, the stunning gardens and surroundings, the whole estate was the perfect mix of new and old, modern and traditional.
We planned to get married in the walled garden at Schivas House, have our drinks reception then head up to the Steading for dinner and dancing. The best of the full estate. However, the weather on 6th May 2023 had other ideas. Being a Scottish wedding, we accepted that our plans had to change. Our celebrations would be at the Steading.
Tracy and Edward were on hand to deliver the wedding that the weather was going to allow us. Contingency planning at its best! The morning of the wedding was so fun as we got ready at Newton House, across the courtyard from the Steading. Blair and his groomsmen stayed at West Lodge on the estate the evening before, and judging by the photos, they were also having a great time ahead of the wedding.
Now we were all suitably glammed and I was in my wedding dress…the most surreal moment, after two years of planning, the many dress alterations appointments, the time had finally come. It was happening! Wow!! Walking down to aisle to meet Blair was incredible, I really tried my best to be in the moment, take it all in and enjoy it. It was such a special moment with my dad, a moment just for us as we headed down to
Blair. The video footage shows just how proud my dad was and how delighted he was to be ‘giving me away’ to Blair.
Our ceremony was gorgeous and so personal to us. Jac Ruddy married us and Blair’s daughter, Rachael, gave a lovely and funny speech about how love is like owning a dog. We were now married, and it was time to party. Blair and I with our bridal party were whisked away for our photographs. It’s such a conflicting time we felt. After the wedding is over, the photos and footage is all you have left from the day and I adore looking back on them. However, in the moment, you just want to have fun with your friends and family. It is worth it though because the photos and footage are stunning.
My favourite part of the day was during the speeches and the meal. Mostly because we could just sit back, enjoy it and take everything in! My dad, husband, best man and chief bridesmaid, Lynsey, all delivered speeches. Lynsey gave a speech because why should it just be men that give speeches at weddings, right?! After the meal, it was time to party the night away! It was the most fun atmosphere, our band played the perfect mix of wedding songs and a DJ set for the last hour. We also surprised our guests with an Ibiza style saxophone set. Overall, for me as a bride, the day passed in a flash. I really wish I could have slowed down time.
We had a dream team of suppliers but our day really ran like clockwork because Tracy and her team at Schivas were always 5 steps ahead. She is fantastic and is such a natural in her role at Schivas. I have no doubt that Schivas, still a relatively new venue, will continue to grow and get better and better with every wedding season. I will always be a Schivas ambassador, with nothing but good thoughts and feedback should anyone dare to ask…as I will go on and on.

Your wedding venue sets the stage for everything. Whether you're going for cosy and intimate or grand and glamorous, the space you choose is so important. From historic estates to charming barns or even a marquee under the stars, there’s something for everyone.
Here’s how to find the place for you…
Match your vibe
Your venue should feel like you. If you’re a laid-back couple and love nature, a rustic barn or a marquee might be perfect. If you’re all about elegance and glam, a historic estate or modern ballroom could be more your style. The key is finding a space that reflects your personalities and the atmosphere you want to create. You don’t want to feel out of place in your own wedding venue, so think about the vibe you want from the moment your guests arrive to the final dance.
Guest list first
Decide whether you’re having a small, intimate gathering or inviting everyone. Because you don’t want to fall in love with a tiny, romantic venue only to realise it can’t hold half your guests. Start with a rough idea of numbers and be realistic. Once you know your headcount, find somewhere that fits, instead of cutting your list or feeling cramped.
Marquee magic
If you’re torn between an indoor venue and the great outdoors, why not go for both? Marquee weddings offer great flexibility. You can choose the location (from your back garden to a hilltop with views to die for), customise the décor and set up multiple spaces for dining, dancing and relaxing. Plus, if the weather turns (hello, Scottish showers) you're covered – literally. Bear in mind a marquee is usually a blank canvas so you’ll need to think about essentials like flooring, heating, lighting and seating. You may also need to arrange for catering facilities, power generators, and, depending on the location, toilets. Working with an experienced marquee company will ensure everything is planned to perfection, from logistics to layout.
Be practical
While dreaming of your perfect venue is fun, you’ve got to keep logistics in mind. For example, if you’re going for a marquee, is the location equipped with access to utilities and facilities? Are there any restrictions in terms of curfews, fireworks or even wearing heels on precious flooring? Double check all the details you can before you sign on the dotted line.
Timing is everything
When it comes to locking in your venue, timing can make or break your plans. Popular places book up fast, especially for prime dates (like summer Saturdays). But timing isn’t just about the date. Think about the flow of your wedding

Your Wedding at Union Kirk
LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF ABERDEEN, UNION KIRK SITS RESPLENDENT WITHIN THE SPARKLING GRANITE OF UNION STREET.
Designed by James Matthew and built in 1869, this grade B listed building has been carefully and sympathetically converted whilst retaining many of the traditional features that you would expect to find in your “Kirk”. Including the stunning stained-glass windows, vaulted ceiling, and intricate cornicing.
Union Kirk has the capacity to hold from 80 - 260 guests depending on your requirements.
day too. What time will your ceremony start? When will dinner be served? How long does that leave for a drinks’ reception? And does your venue have a strict time for when you need to wrap things up? Consider set-up too. Have you loads of DIY décor to place? Are there staff on-site to help or should you rope in some pals? Work with your venue to make sure your vision has been fully brought to life before guests arrive, and the rest of the day runs smoothly.
Personal touches
Once you've found your dream venue, the fun begins! Whether you’re decking out a marquee with fairy lights and floral garlands or bringing modern touches to a traditional space, this is your chance to make it your own. Think about lighting, décor and other details that will make the space feel unique to you as a couple. ♥

Accommodation Stay in Style
Are you planning a local wedding? Got guests coming from far and wide? Here’s how to make sure they have a wonderful stay.
Book them into… A Hotel
If your guests are looking for a stress-free option, booking a hotel is the way to go, especially if it’s the one you’re tying the knot at. Many hotel packages include discount rates for guests spending the night so be sure to check that out early on and communicate it to your invite list. If you’re not marrying in a hotel venue, this is still a great stayover option for your VIPs with food, drinks and facilities on hand.
Book them into… A B&B
Whether nestled in the heart of the city or tucked away in the countryside, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire boast a variety of charming
B&Bs that offer an authentic local experience – ideal if you’ve got people coming from overseas who’ve not been to Scotland before. They’ll be treated to a cosy homely vibe and might even get to sample a buttery for breakfast!
Book them into… A serviced apartment
If you’ve got guests who’ll want a home from home experience, a serviced apartment is the way to go. They’ll have flexibility and privacy with their own bedroom, bathroom and living space – plus the added benefit of hotel-like services. Many will have a restaurant onsuite, a gym or fitness centre and car parking (which is always handy if it’s in the city centre). Concierge will be able to order taxis to the wedding venue and, if your guests wish to be pampered, could probably sort hair and make-up for the morning of!
A serviced apartment is ideal for families with little ones or groups who want to stick together while having the freedom to come and go as they please. ♥

Laughter and Joy Love
Ryan Adam and Lewis Sutherland had been together ten years when they finally tied the knot in August 2024 after a super-cute proposal and joint 'stenny'. From their wedding scent to their sweetheart table, we’re so in love with their whole wedding vibe…
"We had a joint ‘stenny’ organised by our groomsmaids, Clair and Holly – one at home (a May Day weekend day out in town) and one away in Milan.
Planning started in July 2023, giving ourselves just over a year until the big day. Having been together for nine years we didn’t feel we needed that long to organise everything. Plus, Lewis is a born planner so it he had everything in hand!
We chose the Palm Court Hotel as it ticked all our boxes – big enough for our guest list but it still felt intimate. And having eaten there before we knew we’d get a good feed on the day.
The vibe was modern and rustic with a few traditional elements thrown in. Most importantly, though, we wanted it to be chilled and fun. Ryan’s passion for gardening meant flowers were a big focal point and we went for reds, pinks and greenery. This palette with gold accents became the overall colour scheme. Lewis did lots of the décor DIY, from making place names and the table plan to having the room scented in the way we wanted.
We always knew we wanted to wear kilts in similar colours and Georgian Dress Hire was amazing.
Nothing was too much trouble. They even gave us colour samples home to help coordinate other aspects of the day with our outfits.
Our groomsmaids both wore white dresses from Coast. Because it was a same-sex marriage there was no wedding dress, so we wanted the girls to have wedding dress vibes! Alfie, our dog, made an appearance too. He wore a tweed lead and collar with a tartan bow tie to match his owners.
The wedding morning was very relaxed. It started with a private Champagne breakfast with our groomsmaids before hair and makeup began for the girls. We had a religious service that couldn’t have been more perfect. It was full of fun, laughter, tears and love – and the tone reflected our relationship.
Afterwards we went straight into the confetti shot then had group photos. And while everyone tucked into delicious gelato from Forest Farm Dairy’s truck, we headed to Union
Terrace Gardens and Aberdeen Art Gallery for more pictures.
For dinner we sat at a sweetheart table so we could take everything in and reflect on the day so far. Between courses we went round to speak to our guests (we’d also invited each table up for a photo with us before the meal because we wanted to make sure we had a snap with every single guest). The speeches were both moving and full of laughter. Both of us did a speech, followed by Holly.
Our first dance was Belong Together by Mark Ambor. It’s a very new song but we felt the lyrics were very fitting and summed up our relationship. The rest of the night, the floor was never empty – the MacDonald Bros played a good mix of the classics and some ceilidh.
The day was better than we ever imagined it to be. So much love, laughter and joy, and we couldn’t fault a thing. We’d do it again in a heartbeat. And we’re so glad we had our photographer, videographer and content creator to help us document our wedding in an unobtrusive and relaxing way.”

Choosing a song to play as you enter your wedding ceremony is always thought of as a big deal. But did you know the exit song is becoming increasingly important too?
Formally known as the ‘recessional’, many couples opt a happy, uptempo song. After all, you’ve just said ‘I do’ so it’s time to celebrate!
If that’s your vibe, go for something that’ll make you want to shimmy your way up the aisle; something that’ll get your guests up, and something that’ll set the tone for the rest of the day. This is also a great opportunity to surprise your guests with something quirky.

Event AccessoriesDecorations for Every Occasion
If you’re brand new to wedding planning (congratulations on your engagement by the way!) you could be forgiven for thinking décor for the big day is pretty much just chair covers and place settings.
Newsflash: It’s so much more. And it covers so many bases, from food to fun to photos. Time to get creative!

Ideas for… Eating
If you’ve got a sweet tooth and want to embrace it beyond your delectable dessert choice, you can absolutely incorporate it when it comes to the added extras.
Firstly, your favours are the perfect way to sneak an extra treat in there and we love the idea of individual pieces of fudge, tablet or marshmallows – especially if you’ve chosen to customise them. From choosing colours and textures that work with your overall wedding theme to having them stamped with your initials, there are plenty of ways to stand out.
If you’re thinking of something more elaborate than a subtle favour, you’re going to want to look at hiring a mouthwatering donut wall or a traditional ice-cream cart – bonus points if it’s an authentic Italian one. And guess what? You can go bespoke here too. Personalised initial wafers or customised wedding colours, anyone?

Ideas for… Instagramming
If you want the wow-factor, wedding styling companies are going to be your new BFFs. They can level up your ceremony look with aisle runners, arches, pillars and backdrops. And they’ll make your reception swoonworthy. Hello, table plans, table décor, festoon roof canopies and sequin backdrops!
Beyond that, expect suggestions for lots of other ultra-Instagrammable features, like personalised signage, balloons, post boxes, giant LED letters, neon signs, lush flower walls and fairy-lit blossom trees.
Ideas for… Interacting
If space allows, there are lots of fun ideas that’ll keep your guests busy while you’re chatting or getting photos taken. And many of them double up as a great way to savour memories of your special day.
Photo booths are tried, tested and fabulous, and have lots of fun add-ons these days. An audio guest book, meanwhile, usually comes in the form of a retro telephone (in a colour to match your vibe, obv!) and is so simple to use. Your guest picks it up, records their message and hangs up. Then you get a compilation of all the lovely words post-wedding.
Alternatively, keep them active with giant lawn games or even a mini-golf experience –which can, of course, be personalised!

Ideas for… Being planet-friendly
We couldn’t not mention this because sustainability is big everywhere right now – weddings included. From your choice of favours to deciding whether to have confetti (and if so, how biodegradable it is), most décor elements come with a sustainability factor that’s worth taking into consideration. Your trusty supplier will keep you right, of course.
One more thing…
Don’t forget your four-legged bestie if they’re with you on the day. Local dog chaperones will make sure your pet is groomed to perfection, tying in seamlessly with your wedding décor, of course! ♥

CakesSweet Choices
Let’s explore one of the sweetest decisions you’ll make: The wedding cake! From fresh flower details to fruit-topped beauties, here’s the scoop on the latest cake trends.
www.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
Sweet and simple
Sometimes simplicity steals the show. White wedding cakes are making a major comeback – and we’re not just talking about the icing. Picture layers of fluffy, all-white perfection that scream timeless elegance. These cakes are perfect for couples who want a chic, understated look… But equally they’re like a blank canvas, ready for whatever creative twist you want to add later on.
Floral fantasy
If you got a thing for flowers, incorporating real blooms into your wedding cake can be beautiful. Imagine a cascade of fresh roses, peonies or even wildflowers adorning your cake, bringing a burst of colour and touch of romance to your reception. Not only do these floral touches add a natural charm, but they also make your cake totally Instagram-worthy.
Fruit forward
For those looking to add a fresh twist, cakes topped with seasonal fruits are where it’s at. From figs to berries, these delights are bursting with flavour and visual appeal – a pop of colour and bit of sweetness that’s just irresistible. Whether you go for a naked cake with a few strategically placed figs or a fully loaded fruit extravaganza, you’re sure to impress your guests.
Metallic magic
Want to add a touch of glamour? Metallic accents are the way to go for a luxurious, highend feel. How about a sleek, modern cake with hints of gold, silver or rose gold brushed onto the icing? Whether you opt for an all-out gold leaf finish or just a few subtle metallic touches, this idea is perfect for couples who want their cake to shine – literally! ♥

If you’re going to a dozen other weddings next year and want to make sure yours stands out, getting creative with on-trend entertainment is a great idea. Here’s some inspo for you…
A musical reveal
Choosing the music that will play as you enter your wedding reception is now almost as important as picking your first dance song. Go for something that matches your energy and personality and, if your bridal party is up for it, why not include them too? Just check out TikTok for some ideas. If you want everyone on their feet with you, pick a feel-good track that’ll instantly get the room in the mood for partying. Start off as you mean to go on!

90s vibes
DJ and party-style weddings are growing in popularity, largely due to the fact many of those tying the knot right now are 90s babies. And they want to dig out the tunes that take them happily back in time! Whilst lots of couples are searching for the ultimate 90s playlists, others are looking for bands or DJs who have a big repertoire from that decade. Want to put a twist those classics? Hire a DJ with a vocalist, saxophonist or percussionist. See you on the dance floor!
Post-wedding highlight reels
Gone are the days of uploading an album of wedding photos to your socials – now you’ll be creating videos and highlight reels of your big day. FYI, they can double up as thank you videos afterwards. Why not add music or ask your band to record a special song to go along with the visuals?

Content creators
One step further than the above, one of our gorgeous feature couples in this issue, Ryan and Lewis, hired a content creator to document their nuptials. Essentially an honorary bridal party member on the day, they’ll capture all the little moments you’d usually snap with your own phone, so you can be fully present for your wedding. Then you can relive it instantly and share it with others.
Best of the rest
Trends aside, entertainment is truly timeless. Here are some that will always and forever be a must:
• Pipers: If you’re going for a traditional Scottish theme, you’re going to want to be piped in!
• Musicians: A string quartet for the ceremony, an acoustic set for the drinks’ reception or a sax player in the evening… All of the above, please!
• Professional entertainers: From singing waiters to magicians to caricaturists, hiring a pro can be a great way to fill your guests’ time when you’re off getting your couple photographs done.
• Fireworks: Provided your venue allows this, what better way to round off the perfect day? ♥

Love of Kaleidoscope A
Holly Robertson and Matthew Aitken transformed their dream into reality, blending modern romance with nostalgic touches that paid homage to their families. From dazzling décor to heartfelt moments, Holly shares their unforgettable day.
“We were on holiday in Dubai, dining at Pier Chic with the Burj al Arab glittering in the background, when he surprised me with a yellow diamond ring from Finnies the Jeweller, something I’d been notso-subtly hinting at!.
As soon as we got engaged I jumped into planning. I’m a self-confessed control freak, so decided to handle everything myself. It was a lot but I loved it. I’d had a bit of a head start, having helped my sister-in-law plan her wedding the year before. My top priorities were booking our venue and photographer.
Drumtochty Castle stole my heart long before we even visited. I wanted that traditional Scottish castle feel but it was important Matthew loved it too. When we walked in he was just as smitten as me. It had everything – exclusivity, grandeur and plenty of space for our loved ones to stay the
Our theme was an explosion of colour. The main shades were blue and pink but really, I wanted as much vibrancy as possible. Natalie from Dahlia Rose filled the space with bold, romantic blooms while quirky details (like a neon-lit retro photo corner, a vintage rug aisle runner and a claw-foot bathtub filled with prosecco!) kept the atmosphere playful. I even got an old phone for our audio guest book and filled a bookshelf with old family wedding photos.
When it came to my dress, I thought I’d chosen ‘The One’. Then Connie at Perfect Bridal pulled out a wild card. It was a oneshoulder, fully beaded Pronovias dress with a stunning floral appliqué and the moment I saw it, I knew. It felt like something Carrie Bradshaw would wear.
My reception dress was more personal – Martine Blair helped me reconstruct my late mum’s wedding gown. It was so special and let me dance until the wee hours in comfort, surrounded by love and history.
The night before, we kept things low-key with snacks, Champagne, and lots of laughs. And we both stayed at Drumtochty but in separate wings.
The morning was unexpectedly serene. We were spoiled rotten by the Drumtochty crew! There was never a moment without pastries or Champagne. The energy from our beauty team was so calming and everything ran like clockwork.
The humanist ceremony was emotional and deeply personal. Matthew lit a candle that stayed burning in memory of my mum, which meant everything to me. And his nephew Harris, who’s only ten, read a poem that had everyone in tears. It was beautiful.
Afterwards, the sun came out. Guests sipped prosecco and enjoyed Lolly’s ice cream; each flavour named after a member of the bridal party. The celebration then seamlessly moved indoors, where speeches were given and our saxophonist had everyone up before dessert was finished!
For our first dance, we chose Billie Eilish’s Ocean Eyes. Matthew’s always loved that song and having my bridesmaid Lauren, a trained musical theatre singer, perform it live was absolutely unforgettable. The Limit took over from there, transitioning from band to DJ. They kept the energy high all night, and their ‘80s medleys were a massive hit.
The whole day was a whirlwind of love and laughter. I’ll never forget the feeling of changing into my mum’s dress and dancing late into the night. My advice? Plan early and don’t worry too much about trends. Make it a reflection of who you are. Trends fade but your story and love never do.”

Picture Perfect Photography
Photography and videography will most likely be one of your bigger wedding spends so it’s worth learning a bit about why they’re so important. Here are 25 need-to-knows…
www.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
1. You need to do your research
Take a look at the websites and social channels of the outstanding northeast experts (top tip – many of them advertise within these very pages!) then narrow them down to a shortlist.
2. There are many different styles
Suppliers may talk about candid, reportage and documentary where you’ll barely notice them. Think spontaneous shots of you and your guests laughing, crying and everything in between. Alternatively, formal styles will see you and your guests posed to create images that could be on the pages of a magazine. This works well for capturing large groups of family or friends together. You’ll quickly learn what’s for you and what’s not. And remember some will offer a combination – you can get your quirky candid memories and still round up the troops for a family shot to go on gran’s mantlepiece.
3. Check date availability ASAP!
If you’ve got a venue booked, ask if your fave photographers and videographers are free because their diaries can be full years in advance!
4. It’s great to say hello
It’s a good idea to make sure you work well with these suppliers because it’s as much about personalities vibing as it is about their expertise. After all, they’re going to be around you a lot on the big day.

www.danirosephotography.com
I’m your extra wedding guest with a fancy camera, ready to join in the good times, the giggles and the adventures.
5. Talk about budget early on
Always the elephant in the room yet always one of the most important things you need to know. Check out whether your favourite photographers work with package deals (the most common) or with an hourly rate. Ask exactly what the packages include, and whether you can pick and choose how much of the day you want covered (useful if you’re on a tight budget).
6. You may need to factor in travel costs
Depending on where your suppliers are based and where you’re tying the knot, covering their mileage may be a cost to consider. This isn’t specifically for photographers and videographers – most hairdressers and make-up artists work like this too.

www.jdyerphotography.co.uk
7. Spend time looking at previous work
If you haven’t immediately settled on someone you love, dig a little deeper. Many will share a selection of their most impressive shots/film clips online but it’s not often you see a whole wedding, start to finish (understandable, though, as that would be a lot of uploading)! It’s worth asking for, to get a feel for how your love story will unfold on camera.
8. Seek out happy words from past clients
Like the above, speaking to other couples or reading testimonials is a good way to whittle down your shortlist. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful and one of the best ways to find the photographer or filmmaker for you is to hear what others think.
www.elitephotographics.co.uk
www.daniellelesliephotography.com
9. Embrace second shooters
Now an option with many packages, a talented second shooter can be there to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the action. Often they’ll capture the heart-warming reactions to all the events happening on ‘main stage’.
10. Do the engagement shoot
Lots of photographers offer this and it’s a great opportunity to get to know them better. So say yes! And if you feel nervous? Even better, because you can practice being on camera. You’ll also score some beautiful images to savour forever – and potentially use on your invitations.
11. It’s great if they’ve got experience at your venue…
But not a problem if they don’t. If they’re familiar they’ll know all the tricks in terms of space, light and timings, as well as being
on first name terms with the staff. That said, someone who hasn’t shot there before will be full of excitement about this new stomping ground and may uncover some hidden gems for those cute couple pics.
12. And experience with your other suppliers:
Much like the above, it’s handy if vendors (especially your photographer and videographer) are on first name terms because they’ll know how one another work. But it’s not essential.
13. Aerial footage is super-cool
If you’ve got a spectacular venue or impressive wedding design, why not invest in some drone shots? This will definitely take your wedding footage to new heights!
www.byrhea.co.uk
www.thehoggs.co.uk
www.daniellelesliephotography.com
14. Live streaming can make lots of people happy
If you’ve got friends or family overseas that can’t make your special day, ask if your photographer and videographer can let them experience it from the comfort of their home.
15. Don’t forget the practical questions
Take note of when you need to pay the deposit, how much it is and when the final balance is due.
16. Make sure you prep your to do list
Another practical one – ask your photographer and videographer what they need from you, if anything, pre-wedding.
www.danirosephotography.com
www.deesidephotographics.co.uk
www.eastsidephotography.co.uk
17. You may be asked (or want) to make a shot list
Leading on from the above, it’s handy to arm your suppliers with a list of must-have photos or footage. Brainstorm what you really want captured, from the little details on your tables to groups of friends you want snapped together.
18. Work together to plan the day
Find out what time they’ll be at the venue (worth coordinating with hair and make-up on this) and when they’ll head off. Want them there longer? Ask if you can pay extra.
19. It’s important to look after your suppliers
Given the length of time your photographer and videographer are with you, most couples include them in the headcount for the wedding breakfast, even if just for the main course. They’ll thank you, for sure!
20. You should find out if there are any limitations
Ask your vendors if anything is an absolute no-no. Can others take photos and videos while they are, or do they recommend an unplugged ceremony, for example?
21. You’ll learn about editing styles
You might hear about post-production. It’s when technical processes are applied to create the incredible finished version. And it can range from bright, colour-packed pics to those with more of a moody feel. With video, they may add music.
22. Remember patience is a virtue!
Photographers and videographers know how eager you are to see the end result. But the post-production process is time-consuming and don’t forget they’ll be shooting other weddings around the same time. Guess what, though – you may get a few highlight images after your wedding/a film clip before the big movie release. Woohoo!
23. Think ahead to the end products
Your package will include how you want your glorious images delivered to you – USB, digital or a glossy album?
24. It’s worth asking ‘what if’…?
The premier choice for exquisite wedding videography in the Scottish Highlands
At Thistle Production, we believe
Whilst most weddings go without a hitch (pun totally intended) there are the occasional few that run into a bit of completely unpredictable bother. Make sure you know the back-up plans for everything, from equipment issues to sudden illness.
25. Having a photographer and a videographer is great!
You might be trying to choose between these two vendors. But actually, having both makes sure your wedding is captured in all manners, from all angles, giving you maximum impact when you look back. ♥

Soulmates Seaside
Typically seen performing at weddings, singer Paul Black found himself on the other side this time when he and Libby Bremner tied the knot at the Seafield Arms Hotel in a relaxed, coastal-inspired celebration, reflecting their love of the beach and each other. With a stunning venue, neutral tones and personal touches, they created a laid-back yet meaningful atmosphere for their closest friends and family. Libby tells us how the magic unfolded...
’’We met online and after getting to know each other, it just felt right. In December 2023 Paul proposed at the Seafield Arms, a place that already held a special place in our hearts. It was a beautiful and meaningful moment that we’ll never forget.
We didn’t waste time when it came to planning. We knew we wanted a summer wedding and we got right to it! Our top priority was securing the venue. We were already in love with the Seafield Arms and Cullen, with its beach and sea views, felt like the perfect setting.
The organisation was all done by us – no planner needed. We wanted the day to be laid-back and personal, with the decor reflecting our love for the coast. We went for neutral colours and natural elements, like washed wood and rope, to bring in that ocean vibe. It was simple yet perfect for us.
Finding the dress was a breeze. The team at Avorio Bridal made everything so easy and, believe it or not, the first dress was the dress.
It was unique and didn’t need any alterations or customisations – perfect as it was. As for the bridesmaids (our two daughters) they rocked blush pink jumpsuits from Next, teamed with white Vans. They played a special part in the ceremony then our youngest, Rudi, give a heartfelt speech before the meal.
Paul knew what he wanted to wear and his muted tartan kilt from Mitchell Scott fit the bill perfectly. The greens and browns tied in with our ocean theme, blending seamlessly with the natural, coastal tones of the day.
The night before we stayed at the Seafield Arms with friends and family, enjoying a lovely meal at the restaurant. Wedding mornings can be chaotic but ours was surprisingly chill. Hair by Rae and Samantha Cardno Makeup made sure I was looking my best while Sidewinder Jazz, an Aberdeen band, set the mood for the day.
We had a humanist ceremony, which felt personal and intimate – exactly what we wanted. Afterwards, we celebrated with Champagne and canapés, enjoying the smooth jazz in the background. The food at the Seafield Arms was absolutely incredible and while we didn’t have a traditional bridal party or formal speeches, Paul did take a moment to thank our guests, which felt just right.
Our first dance was to Sam Ryder’s More, a song that holds deep meaning for us. It’s about wanting more time with someone, and we often say we wish we’d met sooner so we could have had more of life together.
Looking back, it’s tough to pick just one highlight because there were so many. Being surrounded by the people we love and sharing the day
with them was truly special. Our advice to anyone planning their wedding? Don’t stress. It’s just one day. Enjoy the process and on the day itself take time together because it goes by in a flash.’’

After the Event Happy Ever After
From flight upgrades to ‘familymoons’, here are the latest honeymoon trends…
Airline company Emirates says Brits spend an average of £4,062 on their romantic post-wedding escape with one in three adding honeymoon contributions to their gift list. Nearly one in five couples treat themselves to a luxe flight upgrade while 40% expect special treatment onboard… And why not!?
On average, loved up twosomes take two months to plan their escape then spend two-and-a-half weeks there. While away, a quarter of you jet to at least three different countries. At 47%, beach breaks top the destination list, followed by city trips at 24%, spa visits at 17% and adventure holidays at 16%.
When deciding on a destination affordability is said to be the top consideration, along with personal interests. Most of you will take on the booking yourself but a surprising 11% will trust family and friends to book for them!
Talking of which, alternative ‘moons’ are on the rise with 28% of you choosing a ‘familymoon’ (this trend has seen 43.5k Insta posts!) and 16% booking a ‘buddymoon’. It’s incredibly popular with those aged 18-34, with 54% saying they either did it or considered this option.
So, what will you do!?
