Welcome
to your Spring-Summer 2023 issue of Grampian Wedding Directory!
Hurrah – wedding season is well underway! Now, if we can just get the weather to play ball for the duration of summer and beyond…
That said, take advantage of any grey days by sitting down with a cuppa or fizz and diving into the latest Grampian Wedding Directory. You’ll enjoy more pages, more mood boards, more inspiration and more real weddings than ever before.
We headed to beautiful Ballogie for Sarah and Ritchie’s postponed summer wedding in the autumn; The Marcliffe for Ashleigh and Conner’s clean cut, all-white nuptials and Raemoir House for Ellie and William’s Lord of the Ringsinspired day.
For something a bit different, check out gorgeous sisters Anna and Cara who tied the knot just weeks apart in the same place with many matching suppliers. Then feast your eyes on Stef and Tim’s vow renewal – 10 years’ on from their first time saying ‘I do’ in Vegas they held a ceremony in their very own venue, Logie Country House.
But what’s in it for me, you say? Well, how does a luxury twocourse lunch and a couple of super-relaxing spa treatments sound? Flick to page 140 and enter our competition to win an amazing day out with your other half or friend at Trump International Scotland’s magnificent five-star country hotel, MacLeod House.
Finally, thanks to everyone who helped pull this issue together, from our suppliers to our student (Hilary who researched, wrote and lit up the office) to our design duo. After 13 years creating GWD and supporting with Your Wedding Exhibition, Jen is off to pastures new. We’ll miss her terribly but wish her well, and we’re excited to welcome Carly who got stuck in immediately. Great to have you on board, and we look forward to see where you take these pages in 2023 and beyond!
Happy planning – GWD is here with you every step on the way as the only wedding publication in the Northeast of Scotland!

AMidsummer Night’s Dream
Ten years after their Vegas elopement Stef and Tim Erbe decided to tie the knot at Logie Country House - the very place where they built their life together. Their breathtaking, floral-filled renewal was inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream and we can’t wait to share their love story with you…
Twelve years ago, as Stef (a teacher in Canada) ventured to Scotland, Tim was in the process of restoring Logie House, which had burned down in 1974. He was the eighth person to buy it as a ruin in the hope of bringing it back to life.
He hired Stef to help around the estate and care for his children, headed to the airport to meet her for the first time and was instantly smitten with her! Six months later, it was time for her to head home, but she asked if she could stay a little longer. Tim replied that she was welcome to stay forever… So, she did.
Fast forward and Tim proposed at Dunrobin Castle shortly after Valentine’s Day in 2013.
Within two weeks they’d booked flights to Vegas to elope, slow dance to Elvis and ride in a pink Cadillac! They had a small blessing back in Scotland with friends and family, but the story wouldn’t end there – ten years later, it was time to renew those vows within the beautiful walls of Logie Country House. Stef tells all…
“We chose Logie House because it is ours and it’s full of such fond memories – it’s where our love blossomed. A Midsummer Night's Dream was the theme, and we gave Trina’s Art and Flowers carte blanche to do whatever she liked. She did the most incredible job. I have never seen Logie look so stunning!
REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 5 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
As it was a renewal, I didn’t want anything too bridal but I still wanted it to look amazing and fit with the theme. I found ‘The One’ on Etsy and and knew I’d made the right decision when I tried it on. Tim wore a kilt for our Vegas wedding, so wanted something a bit different. I wanted him to wear tweed but he finds it too itchy so corduroy it was! In the end, it was the perfect choice.
Much like the blessing, the children were our wedding party. Amy was once again chief bridesmaid and Alex reprised the role of best man. Same jobs this time, just a few feet taller! Alex also walked me down the aisle, which was so lovely as the children were what brought us together.
The night before we stayed at Logie and had a relaxing evening as a family before the hustle and bustle of the big day. The wedding morning was fun but chilled with lots of friends and family. It was very informal, which was exactly how we wanted it to be.
The ceremony, a renewal of our vows, was conducted by Neil Mellis, and we had drinks for everyone. We did handfasting as it’s a tradition we’re quite fond of, and we had a reading that detailed how we met and how our love for each other has grown over the years. It was beautiful and we couldn’t have asked for anything better.
After the ceremony we headed up to the house for canapes and some rather deadly cocktails! One of the members of The Big Papas played music for us and everyone mingled while we had photos taken. Then it was time to gather everyone together again for the evening meal, which was divine. We had charcuterie boards to start, a gorgeous prime rib for the carvery then a choice of cupcakes or more cheese for dessert. We elected one person from each table to be the carver, treating them to embarrassing aprons and chef’s hats – but the entertainment didn’t end there!
REAL WEDDINGS www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Once everyone had finished eating and the speeches were over it was time to party! The Singers Secreto delighted our guests with the surprise arrival of a ‘police officer’ who came searching for Tim before bursting into song. Then we took to the dancefloor for our first dance where we swayed along to I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You as a tribute to our wedding day. After that The Big Papas picked up the beat and had the entire dance floor jam-packed until well past 1am.
Overall, it was simply amazing. The highlight for us both had to be finally getting our dream wedding surrounded by all the people we love most in the world. Our advice to anyone planning their wedding would be to plan the day you want… Then do it all over again in 10 years!

Getting Started
Wedding Planing
What better way to explore the world of wedding planning than with a couple who are doing it right now? Meet US-bornand-bred Shannon Hutchinson who’s set to tie the knot with her Scottish sweetheart, Hannah Simpson, in August at the beautiful Maryculter House Hotel…
“We got engaged in December 2018 so this wedding has been a long time coming! After getting permission from her parents, I popped the question at the Aberdeen Christmas Village (she loves everything about Christmas). We ended up ice-skating and, oddly, no-one else was on the rink. After a few laps, I pulled her over into the corner and said I had a present. She unwrapped an ornament I’d had made (it said: ‘We’re engaged 2018!’) then looked
at me with a confused smile. I got down on one knee with the ring and asked her to marry me – surprisingly, being on skates, I managed to avoid falling over!
Being an international couple, we had to decide which country to marry in and Scotland was a no-brainer. Hannah has a much larger extended family than me and it’s a beautiful country. We fell in love with the look of
8 ♥ PLANNING www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Marycutler House… And the food! Once we had our date, we prioritised creating a wedding website (complete with checklists and a budgeting tool) to help us stay organised and give us an idea of who we’d need to book.
I wouldn't say we have a theme but if I had to name it, I’d say ‘modern’. We like things neat, simple and beautiful. I’m the more organised person but Hannah has all the style, so we work well together. Basically, I show her a few ideas and she says ‘yay’ or ‘nae’!
The best bit of planning has been blending our cultures together. The Americans will be surprised when they experience Loch Lomond at the end of the night and we’re sure the Scots will be pleased to see more of an open bar situation! We always share stories with our families and friends on life across the pond but to have everyone together for our day will be the best part. It will make all the planning worth it.

Our décor and stationery have touches of travel and nods to Scotland. For the seating chart, I found a cute map of the world that says: ‘Where in the world am I sitting?’ and we have pictures of me and Hannah in different cities. We haven't exactly nailed down favours but we're considering homemade Scottish tablet wrapped nicely with our names on.
We want to buy our first house together after we're married so we created a gift registry online. There’s a cash fund for people who want to keep it simple and staple house items for those who want to give an item. The list was simple to create and made it easy for our guests.
The most challenging part so far has been the time difference (based in the States we’re five hours apart so coordinating calls with suppliers around that and work is difficult) and the amount of people we’re glamming up on the day. I have five bridesmaids and Hannah has four, plus two men. We’ve got two hairstylists and are waiting to hear if our make-up artist can handle us all!

Creating
My advice to those starting out in the wedding planning world is to use already popular resources, from Grampian Wedding Directory to Pinterest. Then book your most important suppliers first because the little things will come in time as you work out your own personal wedding style. On that note, work with your partner and find out how you best communicate about wedding details. And ultimately, remember it’s a celebration of your love and everything will come together the way it's supposed to.”

“For my hen party, we returned to the scene of the engagement – London. It was a jampacked weekend, starting with Pretty Woman at the Savoy Theatre. Friday was a glam day where we had our make-up done then got dressed up to go cocktail-making. We went to some Covent Garden bars and finished off with a lovely meal at STK. Saturday was a chilled day and we had a wonderful Peter Panthemed afternoon tea overlooking London from the Aqua Shard. It was November so, of course, we visited Winter Wonderland to get into the festive spirit and did some Christmas shopping before leaving on the Sunday.”

“In America we call it a bachelorette party and mine is set for a weekend in late June at Dewey Beach, Delaware. I love the beach and usually go to the Jersey Shore but wanted somewhere a little different. It’s within driving distance for most of the group, which was key since I’m making everyone fly over to Scotland for the wedding! We rented an AirBbB right on the water and the house provides water toys, floats and kayaks. I like to keep it simple and just enjoy drinks with the girls so most of the time will be spent on the beach or at a bar with some live music.”

SoulSisters
After Jac Chetland proposed to Anna Maitland, her sister Cara thought there was no chance of her boyfriend, Scott Vincent, popping the question. But he had other ideas and asked her to marry him on a Maitland family holiday just six weeks later. Keen to make life a little easier for their mum as their dad had sadly passed away, the sisters came up with the idea of back-to-back weddings (just eight days apart!) to keep the momentum going – and cut some costs.
22 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS
Both brides said “I do” at Banchory East then celebrated in beautiful sail cloth marquee at Crathes Castle – here’s how it all happened…
Cara & Scott
“It was so fun doing all the planning with Anna. We’re best friends and knew it’d be relaxed with no dramas. At first we thought the weddings would be quite similar but when it came to choosing suppliers, we started to see some different tastes.
Booking the reverend was my first priority –he’s my best friend’s dad, and did our dad’s funeral. Then it was onto the marquee. We’d first thought about having it in a field by our house… Thankfully we didn’t! Crathes Castle is less than five minutes from where we grew up and feels like home to us. The gardens are stunning and the team was brilliant.
Scott is from Zimbabwe and, both working in the safari industry, we met in Botswana. The wedding was a blend of our cultures and a nod to our love of animals. Overall, though, I wanted a relaxed and fun vibe, full of our huge family and friends.
We went to Perfect Bridal Rooms where Anna tried on dresses for two hours then it was my turn! The first dress I tried, we all fell in love with. I teamed my beautiful Pronovias gown with a simple veil and a pair of earrings that matched Anna’s, which mum gave us as wedding presents.
Scott had a kilt made in the Maitland tartan from Neil Selbie & Co., saying he was taking my tartan since I was taking his last name!
Our ceremony was traditional yet relaxed with hymns, a few non-religious readings and an unplanned rendition of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers, which was so special. When we got to Crathes, I had my turn in the limelight and surprised everyone with a speech. Our meal was amazing, and people still talk about it to this day. In the evening we had one large Strip The Willow then WooHoo Band had the floor full all night.
It was an amazing day, full of pure happiness and love – and a whole lot of sunshine! It was one of the hottest weekends of the year and the weather really showed off Scotland’s beauty to the visiting Africans.” ♥

REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 25 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Anna & Jac
Jac kept it simple with a nice suit from Hackett – a very easy shopping experience! We had five bridesmaids (Cara, Jac’s sister and my three best friends), two page boys and a flower girl. The boys, Jasper and Felix, had a kilt/ trousers made in the Maitland tartan and our cavapoo, Winnie, who was part of the day, had a co-ordinating bow!
The night before the wedding we had separate dinners with our extended families and the wedding morning was full of noise and laughter with everyone popping in as I was getting ready… Absolutely perfect!
After we married in the church, we all went to Crathes to celebrate and Truly Medley Deeply played an acoustic set in the garden. Both Cara and I had a photo of our dad with a sign that said ‘Have a dram with the Big Man’ – the idea was for everyone to have a whisky with him.
I had a vague idea of what I wanted to wear but went to Perfect Bridal Rooms to try on all shapes and styles. It was so special to do it with my sister and mum, although mum was definitely emotionally exhausted after seeing both of us trying on dresses together!
Our meal was great – big sharing plates of meat, all cooked on a smoker outside. The speeches were brilliant and hilarious with my brothers doing one in place of my dad (mum had walked me down the aisle).
26 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS
“It was so fun planning with Cara and we were able to divide and conquer with lots of tasks, making it a bit easier. Apart from the marquee, the band was our most important supplier. We wanted good music to keep everyone on the floor all night and Truly Medley Deeply didn’t let us down.
We danced to Is This Love by Bob Marley before a little ceilidh then music from our band who were unbelievable. That was my wedding highlight – pure love and happiness on the dancefloor all night.
Reflecting on the planning experience, I’d tell other couples to take time to enjoy the lead up. You can get bogged down in the small details so make an effort to enjoy each other too!” ♥

1.Do your homework
Pinterest has always been the go-to for outfit inspo but Instagram is a handy tool too, as well as bridal boutique websites, designer websites and – of course – the pages of Grampian Wedding Directory. Think about what the celebs are wearing to say ‘I do’ and what couples you’ve recently seen tie the knot have chosen to put on. Consider your venue (a castle or stately home may dictate a dressier ‘fit whilst an informal rustic barn wedding could see you going for something more boho) and the time of year. Will you need sleeves and a cosy cover up or are you tying the knot in the height of the Scottish summer?
Take screenshots, make a Pinterest board or go old fashioned with a scrap book and group together everything that’s caught your eye. You may end up with a huge range of styles or you may already be seeing patterns in the vibe you’re after. Either way, this will be a great tool to start your search off once you hit the shops – it’ll arm the consultant with basic background info on your preferences and, together with looking at your shape, he or she will be able to quicky pick some styles to try.

2.Where will you go?
Start by shortlisting the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire shops you want to visit –we’re lucky to have so many bridal treasure troves on our doorstep. Will you do one per weekend or try to plot those close together on a map and see how many you can get through in a day? Do you want to just head in and see what’s out there or have you got your eye on a specific designer that you’re willing to travel to try on? Check your potential boutiques out online and ask for recommendations on where to visit from recently married pals. Then…
3.Make some appointments!
First up, it’s worth noting that you can’t just walk into a bridal shop and, most of the time, it’s not a case of calling up a day or two in advance. The Northeast’s most popular boutiques can be booked up months ahead, especially on busy days like Saturdays or at peak times in the wedding calendar – after all the festive engagements, for example. Check their opening times out online (some offer evening appointments, which can be really handy) and give them a call to schedule yourself in – or complete your availability on their web form. Do keep an eye on the social media pages of your fave boutiques as well, as last-minute availability often comes up. You never know –that could be the appointment where you find ‘The One’!
4.Invite your entourage
You might have a list as long as your arm of who you want to bring but those in the know at boutiques will always advise you bring only one or two trusted companions on the big day to avoid a too-many-cooks-spoil-the-brothsituation, not to mention space restrictions –you want to be able to parade about in your potential gowns without tripping over your whole bridal party. It’s also best to keep it to adults-only and, whilst we’re at it, avoid bringing food and drink, or anything else that could cause mess around these beautiful gowns. www.byrhea.co.uk
BRIDAL COUTURE ♥ 33 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Back to the matter at hand: Whilst it’s great to have those you love and cherish to offer moral support, you need people with you who’ll help (not hinder) the decision-making process. Consider those whose opinions you value, those who’ll be honest about what looks good and what doesn’t (no peoplepleasers, please!) and those who know you really well. Usually, a mum, mother figure or a best pal will instantly be able to tell by your body language whether or not you feel comfortable in something – perhaps before you even realise how you’re feeling!
5.Be upfront about budget
When you arrive at your appointment, one of the first questions (along with the date, venue and vibe of your wedding) will be about budget. In fact, some boutiques may even ask this ahead of time so they can have appropriate styles set out or have you directed to a certain area of the shop where your price range sits. It’s in your interest and the shop’s – there’s no point in them spending time looking out dresses that are too expensive and you definitely don’t want to be trying anything that’s outwith your budget. No-one wants to be tempted to spend that carefully pulled together wedding pot.
So, make sure you have a clear idea of figures before you arrive (if someone else is paying then have a good, honest heart-to-heart with them in plenty time) and be confident about the amount you quote on the day.
P.S. Don’t forget to factor in extras. Have you accounted for a veil or headpiece if you’re having one? Shoes? Alterations? Jewellery?
6.Take care when trying on
There are three key commandments when it comes to the super-exciting trying on sesh. Firstly, try to emulate your big day as much as you can. Bring your wedding heels (or a pair with a height that’s similar to what you might get), wear your hair how you imagine it to be on the day and take sensible undies that’ll subtly support you in your bridal attire.
www. danirosephotography.com www. danirosephotography.com
Secondly, trust us when we say that your consultant knows what they’re talking about. They do this day in, day out for people of all shapes and sizes having all sorts of weddings. So, it’s absolutely worth listening to their advice and being open if they suggest something they reckon will work… It could be ‘The One’ after all!
Lastly, don’t worry if you’re not falling head over heels for the first couple (or dozen!) styles you try on. You need to find something that looks good, feels good and will stand the test of time – will you still adore your fave style in a year’s time when your big day rolls around? Don’t feel pressure to say yes to the dress on the spot because shopping around is half the fun when it comes to finding your perfect bridal look.

7.Be honest
The first batch of dresses selected for you not hitting the mark at all? Tell them! This isn’t a time to keep opinions to yourself and, as much as it’s important to take on board the expert guidance, your comfort and happiness is the most important thing here. Not to mention the fact that your truthful feedback will help them narrow down their selection to suit what works for you. After all, you want to make the most of the time you’re there and only try options that could be a real possibility for you.
8.Ask, ask, ask!
If you already have some in mind, bring a list of questions you want to ask during your consultation and if not, have it in the back of your head throughout that this is a great chance to grill a wedding attire expert.
Things you’ll definitely want to quiz them on are delivery times, alterations, recommendations on accessories, and pre- and post-wedding dress care. To make sure you have all bases covered, why not ask your married friends or family members what questions they wish they’d asked at their very first bridal appointment?

9.Consider an alternative
If the number of boutiques you’ve visited is getting into double figures and you just can’t find anything that feels like ‘you’ - or you have a really specific vision in mind and nothing’s coming close, how about talking to a dressmaker? That’s a whole new, exciting adventure and talented Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire suppliers will work closely with you to bring your dreams to life.
10.Enjoy!
This will, hopefully, be a once-in-a-lifetime experience so soak it all up by really being in the moment. Why not make a day, or weekend, of it and schedule in a lunch with fizz between appointments or a pre-boutique facial to get you feeling fresh? Happy shopping! ♥

The perfect bag
Don’t forget your accessories, especially your handbag… Where else would you store those tissues for the ceremony?! This year, you’re looking at simple, elegant styles. Guests, MOBs or MOGs going for a streamlined, sophisticated look should grab a structured top handle bag whilst those who want to add a touch of glam to their outfit will be reaching for a chic clutch. Versatility
With sustainability and the cost of living crisis high on the agenda, buying a one-time outfit simply isn’t a desirable option for many people. Focus on making a practical purchase you can wear again and again.
Confidence
Feeling comfortable and confident in an outfit is the trendiest thing out there are the moment. There’s no point wearing something you don’t feel is ‘you’, nor something that doesn’t fit like a glove. You want to spend your day enjoying the atmosphere and celebrating with those around you, not smoothing down a skirt or wincing at the pain of too-high-heels. Dress for yourself and no-one else, and you’ll be looking and feeling like a total ten. ♥

Let's Hear it for the Suit...
Grooms
A traditionally versatile option across many cultures: The humble suit! With many different styles to choose from, including bright blends, tartan threads and patterned prints, a suit is the perfect way to fully express your personality on your big day. Here are some of the styles dominating the 2023 wedding scene…
GROOMSWEAR ♥ 57 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.aboynephotographics.com
It’s hard to beat the classic look of a tuxedo or morning suit - these have been staple outfits for many grooms over the decades. However, with the rise of maximalism already making waves in bridal fashion, it’s clear to see grooms are following suit… Sorry, couldn’t resist a pun!
Bold choice
Gone are the days of black and navy being the only options on the rack. Statement-making shades like emerald green, burgundy and deep royal blue have arrived, so show your fun side with a burst of colour. These eyecatching options are perfect for grooms who want all eyes on them as they make their way down the aisle.
Pretty in print
From tartan styles to subtle stripes to floral prints, patterned suits are making a comeback. This trend offers a stylishly unique alternative to solid-coloured suits and injects personality into your outfit. www.andreawisemanphotography.co.uk

Mix and match
Love patterns but don’t want to overdo it? A printed jacket with solid trousers is a clever way to be formal while overthrowing conventional suiting norms.
Oversized fit
Is that the 90s calling? The oversized look is the talk of the catwalk as tailored fits take a back seat this season. It pairs perfectly with the double-breasted style (also making a return this year) for that artfully effortless look.
Head to tonal
For lovers of a more neutral palette, this is a great option. Monotone layering of similar colours but different shades makes for an elegant and sophisticated vibe. Think of it as a modern alternative to colour blocking!
Howdy partner!
Styles that can blend functionality and toughness are gaining popularity as grooms try to replicate the rugged looks of the Wild West. Think bolero ties, ornately-stitched shirts and Western snaps, and you’ve nailed it! www.aboynephotographics.com

Embroidery for everyone
The ever-trending embroidered option is particularly popular on indo-western jackets but is also seen on dinner jackets from all around the world. Many retailers have opted to blend this detail with other trending looks, like double-breasted blazers and oversized suits.
Totally textured
From velvet to linen to corduroy, these fabrics are making a splash in 2023. They all add an element of depth to your suit, transforming it into a standout piece that will leave all your guests wondering where it's from.
All about the accessories
Grooms are making a statement with accessories this season, from bold patterned pocket squares to totally unique ties and creative cufflinks. Accessories can make or break an outfit, but it appears grooms have mastered the art of taking a suit from ordinary to extraordinary with this trend.
Suitably sustainable
If sustainability is high on your list of priorities, you’ll be pleased to know local designers are taking big steps to showcase this in their latest creations, from the use of organic cotton to reusing recycled materials.

True Scotsman
Although suits are proving popular this season, kilts are also a fantastic option. With so many local suppliers to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice – so, how do you choose the tartan that’s right for you?
• Stick with tradition: It’s common for the groom to wear his mother’s maiden tartan.
• Pave your own way: Tread on the wild side and create a tartan of your very own!
• Honour your partner: Much like one of our feature couples, you could choose to take the tartan of your soon to be spouse’s maiden name as a way of honouring them for choosing to take your surname.
• Choose a long-lost family tartan: Some last names unfortunately don’t have a tartan. Could you look to your family tree and find a name that you connect with that does have one?
Whatever direction you choose to go in we know you’ll look dashing – and if you’re feeling brave enough why not go true Scotsman underneath!? ♥

When planning your special day, every detail matters –and that certainly includes your jewellery! Today’s couples are venturing beyond the traditional and exploring trendy, unconventional jewellery ideas. From celestialinspired pieces to eco-friendly options, there’s something for every couple. Here’s what’s trending for 2023…
Creative designs
Constellations of stones offer celestial inspiration with gemstones arranged to mimic celestial patterns or even zodiac signs, creating an eye-catching piece. Kaleidoscope-inspired rings illustrate a vibrant muster of colours and shapes for those who love the unconventional, while two-stone rings celebrate the union between two souls and the harmonious blending of your lives.
Lab-grown love
For environmentally conscious couples, a sustainable and stylish option like lab-grown wedding rings is an ideal choice. These are
created in a laboratory using innovative technology, rather than being mined from earth like traditional rings. A tiny seed of material is placed in a special chamber where it’s bombarded with gases and heat that make the material grow, layer by layer, until it becomes a full-sized gemstone. How cool is that?! These ethically sourced and eco-friendly beauties are a stunning option but if they’re not for you, consider reducing your ecological impact by sourcing a sparkler made with recycled materials. Look for brands or makers who prioritise ethical practices and fair labour standards, ensuring your special day aligns with your values.

DIY ring box
Add your personal touch to your nuptials by crafting a DIY ring box with your loved one. Use materials such as wood or clay, or could you even make use of that small vintage box that’s been in your room forever? Design it together, embrace your creativity and let your love story shine through this one-of-akind keepsake. Why not further customise by adding your initials, wedding date, the date you became engaged or a meaningful quote?
Ring warming
On the big day, enrich your jewellery experience by inviting guests to participate in a moving ring warming ceremony. In this intimate and interactive ritual, your precious pieces will be passed among your guests (stick to close friends and family if you’re having a big ‘do but if it’s an intimate celebration you might have time to let everyone have a turn), who give them blessings, love, and positive energy. Make sure to provide a brief explanation of the ritual, either verbally or through a printed card, as not everyone will be familiar.
Start as you mean to go on
over time? Start with a simple band for your wedding and continue adding new rings to mark milestones, anniversaries or when you welcome children into your lives. This adaptable alternative lets you curate an everchanging collection of rings that narrate your adventure as a couple throughout the years.
Make it your own
If you want to infuse extra sentiment into your wedding jewellery, consider bespoke engravings, such as a significant date, a heartfelt phrase or each other’s fingerprint. These customised details will act as enduring reminders of your love and commitment to one another and make sure your pieces of jewellery are completely unique.

Canine ring bearers
Why not include your furry best friend in your ceremony? Training your dog to deliver your rings can be quite challenging, but it’s achievable! Start by teaching your dog to carry a small bag or pillow in their mouth. Then practice walking them down the aisle using a lead, rewarding them with treats. The result? A heart-melting and unforgettable moment right before you tie the knot.
The £1 ring
Whilst we simply adore the selections at our fave Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire jewellery specialists, no-one says you have to break the bank for a sparkler and the £1 Asda ring has been hitting headlines for just that reason. The retailer has multiple options, from simple solitaires to more intricate designs. If you’re going for this light-hearted ‘love-over-luxury’ mentality put the saved pennies towards creating memories together – a dreamy honeymoon or a down payment on your first home, perhaps?
What about the bridal party?
Don’t forget to make sure that your bridal party feels appreciated and loved. Jewellery is a great idea for a personalised gift for your besties – a timeless treat that can be worn on the big day then time and time again. Want to get something that’s totally on-trend?
Personalised initial necklaces (which can have birthstones or other special charms added too) are super-popular and really meaningful. For something a bit different, how about an anklet? Playful, trendy and available in a variety of styles (beads, chains, charms) you’ll find these increasingly favoured pieces make quite a statement. ♥

Flowers
Floral Psychology
It’s time to dive into the wonderful world of flowers. Let’s decode the secret messages behind them to help you choose the perfect blooms for your wedding day…
Classic roses
It’s been known for centuries that roses symbolise love, beauty and passion. Their popularity in weddings is no surprise as they’re elegant and bring an air of romance to any occasion. Their meaning, however, depends on their colour. While red roses are associated with intimacy and adoration, pink roses symbolise gentleness and admiration. If you and your loved one have been friends before lovers, yellow roses might be perfect as they convey friendship and joy. For those looking for a unique twist, black roses represent mystery and intrigue. And blue roses (who knew they existed?!) stand for the unattainable and impossible.
Tulip fever
Say hello to tulips, the so-called flowers of perfect love and elegance. These beauties come in a range of colours, each with meaning. Want to make a bold statement? Go for bright red tulips! Feeling classy and pure? White tulips are the way to go. With their delicate petals, these blooms are perfect for your wedding bouquet, conveying a sophisticated look.
82 ♥ FLOWERS www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Did you know that the flowers you choose for your big day say a lot about you? That’s right – each has its own hidden meaning. So, let your florals do the talking and express your personality, your emotions or even your relationship with your partner.

Thistle time
Looking for a way to incorporate your Scottish heritage? Look no further than the thistle! Not only are these spiky blooms visually striking but they also carry a profound significance as a symbol of Scotland, representing bravery, loyalty and strength. Thistles are a great way to pay homage to your roots while adding a distinctive touch to your special day with their vibrant pop of colour. So, embrace your inner warrior and consider adding some thistles!
Flower fusions
A beautiful and meaningful way to incorporate multiple shapes and colours is by choosing a mix of florals that convey a specific message. For example, pink and white roses together can symbolise unity and harmony while a combination of lavender and lilac can represent the couple’s devotion and admiration for each other. The possibilities are endless so have fun with it and let your flowers tell your story! ♥

Prepped and ready
Whether you’re a guy or a gal, starting a (or fine-tuning an already existing) skincare routine is essential for a silky smooth complexion on your wedding day. Simple exfoliation and moisturising can be done at home or you could treat yourself and head to a spa for a relaxing (yet rejuvenating) prenuptial treatment – and bags of advice to boot. Remember that the weeks leading up to your big day will be full on, so make sure your skin is hydrated and refreshed with plenty of sleep and water.
Groomed to perfection
Whether you’re looking for a tidy up or a fresh face, wet shaves are a great option for a little male pampering. You’ll avoid razor burns, irritation and ingrown hairs as a trained professional uses water, soap or cream, and a razor to remove your facial hair while you sit back and chill out.
Teeth whitening
For some, enhancing your smile can be a great way to boost wedding day confidence. Arrange treatments in plenty of time before the big day to avoid sensitivity, and head to a trusted, local specialist (like The Orthodontic Clinic) for the best results.
Achieving a beautiful look for your nuptials isn’t just about your outfit – it’s also about your skin, hair, makeup, teeth, accessories and so much more. Keep reading for tips and tricks on how to ace your wedding look… www.jonathanaddie.com

Here for hair
When it comes to hair, it’s always good to see what’s trending. Right now, expect to see intricate braids, loose curls, sleek buns and shiny accessories, namely Bridgertoninspired hairpieces and tiaras… Regal glam alert! Bonus points for those who can score one that’s been passed down the generations –you can tick your ‘something borrowed’ off the list. If you don’t have one, be the one who starts the tradition!
Make me up
This year, it’s all about having fun with colours and textures. Smokey eyes, a total classic, has been a firm fave and is great if you want to look sultry or a little mysterious on your big day. At the other end of the scale, vibrant shades are big and so is the ‘wet’ look –create a fresh and glossy effect on your eyes, lips and cheeks with shimmering products that will make you look angelic under your twinkly fairy lights. Alternatively, embrace your natural beauty with minimal products and a dewy finish for that ‘clean girl’ vibe. ♥

Marcliffe. The
Mrs
“I planned everything myself, along with my mum – apart from the décor. We really wanted to make a statement so I drafted in Jordana Events. She was amazing, taking account of everything we’d dreamed of in her designs and delivering the clean cut, all-white, sparkly vibe we were after, complete with loads of fresh flowers that made the room smell gorgeous.
Décor aside, the venue was another top priority. We wanted a relaxed day where everyone could just enjoy themselves and The Marcliffe felt like a home from home as soon as we walked in. The help from the staff was second to none, and it was somewhere none of our guests had been to for a wedding before – we loved this fact!
I was so nervous for dress shopping as I’m not the most confident person and I was worried nothing would suit me – but it was an amazing experience. I was asked to pick out dresses I liked, and the assistant did the same. Then she told me to put all those I’d picked back, and try her choices. It turned out that she really could just look at you and know what would suit! My dress was one I’d never have imagined would work for me. It was very traditional but the whole thing sparkled, keeping in theme with the wedding. I added a double-length train then accessorised with my grandma’s diamond bracelet (my ‘something borrowed’), a stunning headband and a pair of sparkly Jimmy Choo heels.
After a romantic Winter Wonderland proposal, Ashleigh Mair and Connor Murdoch headed back up north to plan a luxe, sparkly all-white wedding at The
new
Murdoch told us how she made it happen…
I had four bridesmaids and four flower girls, and I popped the question to them at a cocktail party at my house, exactly a year before the wedding. My ladies were dressed in white floor-length gowns and I added a little sparkle with a beautiful diamante pearl band, whilst the flower girls looked like proper little princesses.
Connor knew he wanted a suit and had one made especially. They discussed the colours he liked and what he’d feel comfortable in, and he went monochrome… Right on theme!
We stayed at The Marcliffe the night before and had a meal so that everyone could mingle before the big day. Then I was up at 6am and it went by in a flash. Suddenly my hair and make-up was done, I was in my gown and it was time to head down and get married. The Christian ceremony was all about us, recognising all we’d achieved since being together.
Our pianist continued during the drinks’ reception and it was great to start enjoying the day with our guests. We had a caricaturist on hand so they were entertained while we were off getting photos taken. Obviously, the day was about us but we wanted to make sure everyone felt they were part of it.
Because of this, we had singing waiters during the meal (which was second to none – we all got our food at the same time and there was no wait time between courses). They did classic songs everyone could get involved with and it really got the party started. It was great seeing smiles on our guests’ faces, knowing they were enjoying the day as much as us. We loved every minute!
I’d say to other to-be-weds to enjoy every minute of planning. It may seem stressful, and at the beginning you’ll wonder where on earth to start so do try to get a clear picture of what you’d like. Pinterest and Instagram are the best places to be. Then go to your supplier appointments with your ideas so you can start adding your own touch to the day.”

Pre-styled spaces, from fairytale castles to chic hotels, are packed with character and charm but if you can’t quite find the one for you, perhaps it’s time to consider a blank canvas venue? Here are three reasons you’ll love ‘em!
THE SCHIVAS STEADING, METHLICK www.schivas.com theschivassteading
Images clockwise from top right: Zoe Rae, Christie Johnson, Zoe Rae, Zoe Rae, Christie Johnson, Stuart Craig. Left: Yeloneq Photography
A blank canvas venue is essentially that, from spaces that are quite literally an empty shell (marquees, we’re talking about you!) to those that have gone minimalist on their own décor so you can do the dressing up. For tobe-weds who have a super-specific vision in mind or want to showcase their personal, couple style, these are the perfect places for you to explore.
It may be a single room or a whole venue, and you’ll basically just pay for the venue hire – although some offer simple, handy extras like seating options, a PA system and a dancefloor. You then call the shots on pretty much everything else, from food and drink to décor and flowers.
Of course, you won’t be totally alone. The northeast’s top blank canvas venues are always on-hand to support their couples when needed, whether that’s explaining the ins and outs of the space or suggesting some suppliers they reckon would be perfect for the vibe you have in mind.
And don’t think that blank means boring… Far from it! You’ll find these interesting local venues have loads of quirks and their very own unique selling points, from being exclusive use to having acres of green space to offering views to die for. Some will have facilities on-site for you to use too, whether that’s a kitchen and catering staff or the venue’s own gym!
Still not convinced? Here are three big plus points for empty shell-style venues…
You can create something totally unique
There’s no such thing as a ‘cookie-cutter wedding’ with a blank canvas venue. Couples with a creative streak can let their imaginations run wild and go all in with DIY wedding décor, whilst those who prefer to organise from afar could hire in a style team to bring their dreams to life. Whichever way you go, rest assured your wedding style will be a one-off and will look totally different to the one before, the one after and all the rest in that venue!

You can (usually) pick all your own suppliers
With venues like these, it’s unlikely you’ll be bound to use any particular vendors, like a caterer or drinks supplier – the choice will be all yours. That means you can go ahead and contact those you’ve had an eye on for ages (who doesn’t have a pre-engagement wedding Pinterest board?!), look for others who you think will work with your style and ask around for recommendations. Bring on your hand-picked supplier dream team!
You’ve got full control over your budget
Want to make a real statement with your décor and guest entertainment, but less bothered about the meal? Or are you foodie obsessed; keen to treat your guests to a fabulous feast and happy to go DIY with décor? Wherever your priorities lie, a blank canvas venue means all the budget-related decisions lie with you. You choose the elements you want to prioritise spending on – and decide which you can cut back.
Going for it?
Take heed of these quick tips to make it run smoothly!
• Depending on your venue, it might come with an event organiser who can be in charge on the day. If not, consider hiring someone in to do this very important job.
• Make sure you factor in all the suppliers –not just the fun stuff like food, drink and music, but also toilets, transport and generators if needed.
• Following the above point, suppliers will mount up before you know it. Create a budget at the beginning and make sure you can afford everything you need to create your dream day. ♥

Accommodation Bringing Everyone Together
Booking your wedding night accommodation is an important task to tick off your to-do list - but so is supplying your guests with options of where to lay their head.
In some cases, the venue you choose may have on-site accommodation, meaning you can have all your loved ones under one roof. So, when visiting potential spaces in which to tie the knot, it's a great idea to ask about accommodation options for your guests.
If you plan to tie the knot in a hotel, there’s often the possibility for rooms to be set aside for a period of time meaning your guests can have first dibs – and they may get a discounted rate because they’re part of your wedding. If a castle or stately home is more your thing, then many of the Northeast’s best estates are also home to a number of cosy cottages for guests to stay in.
These are both super-convenient optionsno need to worry about arranging transport for your guests if people are staying on-site. And it’s great if you’re hosting a destination wedding or people are travelling from out of town. ♥

Hotels nearly always have professional events managers onsite to help you pull off your dream day. And once you book in, you’ll be connected with them so you can work together to bring your vision to life. Whether you’re on the hunt for a large or small wedding venue, most hotels offer indoor and outdoor spaces with the capacity for any number of wedding guests. Licencing is taken care of
It’s quite common for hotels that cater to weddings to hold a marriage licence. This means soon-to-be-wed couples can hold their ceremony and reception at the same venue and avoid any and all complicated travel between venues. Plus it gives you and your guests more time to snap some pics in the grounds or the impressively decorated lounge.

Hotels are old hands when it comes to hospitality, and they’ll often have extra facilities for you to enjoy. All About Us
After feigning surprise when William Lawton popped the question, Ellie Inch took her time planning a super-meaningful wedding for her and her fiancé. From the gorgeous natural décor and Lord of the Rings touches to the pure princess vibes and firework finale, these weekendlong nuptials at Raemoir House couldn’t have been any more personal to the twosome…
“Will proposed during a trip to Glencoe… But I’d already spotted the ring box in his pocket so knew it was going to happen. He had to tell me to be quiet for two minutes while he did his speech and asked the question!
When we got engaged, the pandemic was still going on and we didn’t know what would happen so we gave ourselves more than three years to plan. It meant we could save up too. But a year in, things had calmed down and we pulled the wedding forward a year.
I planned everything myself with the help of my mum and Will stepped in at the finalising stage. My first priority was finding somewhere to tie the knot that met my long list of ‘perfect venue criteria,’ and Raemoir was it. It was exclusively ours for the weekend, there was space for our whole bridal party and close friends to stay, they were really flexible in what we could do/have and they allowed fireworks, which was essential for me.
We wanted a wedding that showed little bits of our personality with nods to things we love, like Lord of the Rings and adventuring up mountains. We brought the outdoors in with lots of natural wood décor and a flower arch, and our colours were navy and burgundy with natural greenery.
I also wanted a bit of a princess vibe and knew I could get that with my dress – a big ballgown, of course – and flowers. I tried on eight dresses at my first appointment and loved number two the moment I put it on. But I thought it was just the excitement of trying on dresses for the first time so I continued shopping! I kept coming back to that gown though, so knew it was ‘The One’. The team at Avorio were perfect. They knew what I was looking for straight away and made me feel beautiful in every dress.
I’m in boots all year round so wore Fairfax & Favour boots under my dress, complete with blue tassels as my something blue and a sixpence inside for luck. My something borrowed was a pair of pearl earrings from a friend then I accessorised further with a tiara (which I hope to pass down to the next generation) and a veil longer than the dress –total princess feels!
We had two flower girls who looked angelic in twirling, sparkly dresses and tiaras, and a ringbearer – our baby nephew who was only a couple of months old.
We stayed at Raemoir the night before the big day and both had chilled wedding mornings. Despite that, I was still half an hour late to meet Will in my gown! We had a Humanist ceremony where we wrote our own vows and ended up quoting the same Lord of the
Rings line to one another – totally unplanned. Afterwards, we had photos taken and the guests feasted on a small buffet in place of canapes and starters.
The meal, provided by the venue, was great and the speeches went down well. Next up, the first dance! Our song was From Now On from The Greatest Showman and halfway through we got everyone to join us. It was a fast, fun dance and it created an amazing vibe. Our band played the rest of the evening and we were sure to incorporate some ceilidh tunes because most of our family is from England. They loved it – and I even managed to do Strip the Willow in a ballgown!
Later, we had fireworks and sparklers and this bit, standing with all our guests, was the highlight. It was the perfect way to end our wedding.”

There’s a point in every wedding day where nothing can stop those tummies rumbling.
to nourish
your

with fab
food and delicious drinks so they’re ready to dance the night away…
When it comes to wedding catering, the world is your platter. If you are having a small, intimate ‘do, you may want to spend more, treating your faves to some real culinary delights or even matching wines to go with their meal. If you’re big on numbers, keep it simple with trusty staples (beef and chicken are always winners) or go for fun food trucks that serve up burgers or pizza buffet-style. For drinks, couples are increasingly looking for something a little bit different – and a funky bar is just the ticket. The Horse’s Tipple, for example, is a refurbished horse box that doubles up as a bar and a stand-out piece of rustic décor!
Regardless of your cuisine, tipples and style of service, there are some factors to always consider:
• Does your venue offer catering? Or will you need to outsource?
• Decide on a budget and work with your supplier to see what you can afford. Bear in mind hotels, for example, may include more than just a meal for their ‘per head’ cost.
• Do you or any guests have dietary requirements? Ask them on your invitations.
• Don’t forget to taste test! Loads of couples say this is the best bit of wedding planning. ♥

Unforgettable Treats
Cakes
Ready to make a statement with
your cake? Here’s a delicious variety of ideas to make it memorable. Grab a fork and dig in!
‘Marry’ it up with your theme
Tying your wedding theme into your cake will take your day to the next level. Your talented northeast cake baker will help you get creative with colours, textures, shapes and decorative elements but do search for some inspo in advance. If you’re having a natureinspired day, a naked cake is an obvious choice. Going glam? How about metallic accents, like gold leaves or silver pearls? Boho brides and grooms will love a rustic-style cake adorned with fresh wild flowers, whilst those channeling true romance might want to look up classic tiered cakes with delicate sugar flowers.
Spice up your flavour game
Vanilla sponge is a classic choice but why stick with the ordinary when you can go extraordinary? From a zesty lemon cake for a summer soirée to a spiced apple cake for a winter wonderland, there’s a flavour for every season.
Be deliciously inclusive
Acknowledging dietary needs is more important than ever. If you’ve got vegan guests or some with an intolerance, consider a cake that caters to them. With delicious alternatives like almond flour, coconut milk and yummy fruits taking the place of classic ingredients, your other guests won’t know the difference. You’ll have a healthy creation and peace of mind that every guest can enjoy it.
Think outside the cake
Not a cake fan? That’s okay. There are dozens of alternatives, from doughnut walls and cupcake towers to full-blown ice cream sundae bars! Of course, this doesn’t have to be an ‘either or’ situation. Couples with a real sweet tooth could serve these tasty treats alongside their cake – or could you make them part of your evening buffet? ♥

you’ve not settled on one yet, here are some of our 2023 faves to inspire you…
Back to nature
Bringing the outside in for a wedding theme certainly isn’t new but there’s a particular focus on rustic, natureinspired table settings this year. Think wooden plates, simple cutlery and wildflower-focused centrepieces. Complete the look by incorporating burlap, twine and moss in your décor.
Sweet nostalgia
Why not add a touch of vintage charm and whimsy with a retrothemed sweetie or ice cream cart? Not only do they offer a fun visual element, it’s a great interactive experience for your guests. Give them a trip down memory lane with tangy sherbet lemons and metrelong astrobelts or keep it cool with a classic Coke float! ♥

Eco-friendliness
As more of you embrace sustainability in life, you replicate this in wedding planning. Think reusable/biodegradable tableware, locally sourced food, and environmentally-friendly favours. Keep waste down with digital invitations (cut paper use while still making a stylish statement with the Northeast’s talented stationers) and decorating your venue with potted plants – they can be taken home by guests or repurposed in your own garden.
Cultural fusion
Are you and your other half from different backgrounds? You could create a truly distinctive celebration by blending traditions from your respective heritages. Consider outfits, music, dance, food, as well as meaningful rituals and customs from both backgrounds. These can be weaved into your ceremony and reception, providing guests with a rich and culturally diverse experience that reflects your lives coming together forever.

Starry night
For couples that find solace in the beauty of the night sky, a celestial-themed wedding can be an enchanting way to celebrate your love. Draw inspiration from the stars, planets and cosmic elements and you’ll create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere. Where to start? Colours! Look at a palette that reflects the hues of the cosmos (deep blues, purples and shimmering metallics like gold, silver or copper) and work out how you can incorporate them into your invitations, table linens and outfits for a cohesive look. ♥ www.jonathanaddie.com

Ceremonies Scottish Spark
www.jonathanaddie.com 162 ♥ CEREMONIES
For generations, Scottish couples have been commemorating their love with dreamy, meaningful wedding traditions, each tailored to reflect their cultural heritage. Because of this, Scottish ceremonies are a feast for the senses, celebrating the nation’s vivid past, from the stirring sound of bagpipes to the ancient custom of handfasting.
touch of history and romance, it also makes for some absolutely stunning photos you’ll cherish forever.
Piping in the love
No Scottish wedding would be complete without the sound of bagpipes filling the air. Elevate your ceremony with a traditional piper leading the bridal party down the aisle or use one of the Northeast’s best to announce the newlyweds’ arrival at the reception. The touching notes of the bagpipes are sure to send shivers down your spine - and they’ll sound incredible in a wedding vid, if you’re having one!
Quaich cheers
richness of local culture…
Clan connections
If you’re Scottish, embrace your roots and showcase your clan pride by incorporating your family tartan(s).. Whether it’s through a kilt for the gents, a patriotic sash for the ladies or some venue décor (like table runners and bouquet ribbons), flaunting these distinctive patterns is a fantastic way of shedding light on your heritage. Get creative with it! How about a classy tartan pocket square or some adorable tartan-clad flower girl dresses? Your guests will love the personal touch these connections bring to your celebration.
Handfasting hype
Take a step back in time and add a symbolic twist to your ceremony with the ancient tradition of handfasting. This Celtic custom involves your hands being gently bound together with a cord or ribbon, symbolising the joining of two lives and their commitment to one another. Choose colours that hold a special meaning or incorporate your family tartan. P.S. Not only does handfasting add a
Raise a glass, or rather a quaich, to a long and prosperous life together with this Scottish custom. A quaich, also known as the ‘loving cup’, is a ceremonial drinking vessel made from pewter, silver or even wood. This tradition symbolises the sharing of life and love as you take your first drink together as a married couple. Pour your preferred Scots tipple into the quaich – from whisky to a locally-distilled gin to a non-boozy alternative –and toast to the beginning the thrilling adventures that lie ahead. ♥

Ceremony
Creating a beautiful and romantic atmosphere during your ceremony is a must. How about creating those feels with a live pianist, a harpist or even a string quartet? Alternatively, opt for a choir that’ll entertain your guests as they await that all-important arrival(s).
Drinks reception
After exchanging vows and rings, it’s time to celebrate and now is the perfect time to inject some fun. From the sax (so on-trend right now) to the bongos, there are loads of music options, but that’s not all. Whilst you’re off getting snapped as newlyweds, give your guests some fun ways to pass the time. Here are three of our faves:
170 ♥ ENTERTAINMENT www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
• A live painter: Capture your ceremony on canvas. Not only will it be captivating for your guests to watch but you’ll have a work of art you can cherish for a lifetime. Fun fact: Mini prints can be sent out as thank you cards!
• Magicians: Want to leave your guests lost for words? An interactive magic performance will do the trick. Once they recover, this will be a real talking point for the rest of the day and beyond.
• A glitter or face paint station: Why not set up a station for guests to add colour and shine to their looks? Fun for all ages and great if you’re having festivalthemed nuptials.

An evening of fun
You’ll have poured over your table plan until it’s practically perfect in every way so there’s no doubt chat will be flowing but couples are increasingly keen to incorporate entertainment during this portion of the day. How about placing a small pile of Lego at each table to see who can put together the most unique creation? Or organise a trivia game with questions about you and your spouse. Such a simple but effective way to keep people entertained through dinner and beyond.
Ready to party
From live music to a DJ (some offer additional services like light shows so get your glowsticks ready!) to a playlist (the perfect way to incorporate karaoke), the choice is yours. Consider the vibe you want and the experience you’d like your guests to have. Then watch as the evening comes to life…

Photography Lights, Camera, Action!
Wedding videography has witnessed many significant changes over the years and 2023 looks set to bring even more. New ways to capture that all-important day are cropping up all the time due to innovative technology and clever editing techniques! So, grab yourself a cuppa, sit back and relax as we tell you all the cinematography trends that you can expect to see this year…
PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM MAKING Recording the day... 176 PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM MAKING 185 COMPANY PROFILE 186 REAL LIFE WEDDING
www. danirosephotography.com
We all know that your wedding day is one of the most important and memorable days of your life, so what better way to commemorate it than by capturing it on film? You can even get creative with the camera in the days leading up to the big day!
Here’s some ideas for how to incorporate video into your nuptials:
Send Save The Date/invitation videos
Proper invitations are certainly not a thing of the past (big up the Northeast’s talented stationers!) but this super-cool video stationery trend is making waves in the wedding world. Share this eco-friendly option wherever you like, whether that’s via email, in a private wedding Facebook group or over a group WhatsApp message… Remember, you’re not just doing something fun and different, you’re also saving the planet in the process!
Create your very own wedding trailer
Feel like a celebrity in this short (usually about 60 seconds) professionally edited highlight video of your special day – and re-live your wedding with

this shareable wee reel as you wait for your own feature length film to arrive in the mail. And if you want to reminisce on the planning process you can add snippets of that in too. Just chat with one of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s top videographers to plan out exactly what you want.
Super 8mm film videos
This retro video style was all the rage in the 60s/ and 70s, and has grown in popularity over the past couple of years. It adds a layer of authenticity and timelessness to the visual and is the perfect choice for those who want to invoke a sense of nostalgia! Bear in mind that super 8mm film will require a special camera and it unfortunately can’t also capture the audio of your special day. Due to this we recommend sticking with trusty, modern digital wedding videography to capture the day and supplementing with retro film style to capture the vibe and create a nostalgic heirloom that can be passed down through generations. The perfect combination and the ultimate keepsake – you can thank us later…!

Video albums
If you’re not familiar, these cool, small booklets display high-quality wedding videos and many of them come in different colours and cover styles. They make the perfect gift for family members and can be used as keepsakes that look right at home on your coffee table or bookshelf. The future of technology and how people consume videos is forever changing so if you do decide to go down this route, make sure you ask your videographer to share the master files with you too, so you aren't limited only to the video album.
Documentary video diaries
Look back and laugh with a documentarystyle video full of mini-interviews with guests. And you know what? You can even use your raw footage as a bloopers reel! Model it after your favourite docustyle shows – we’re thinking The Office? Or how about the brand new Daisy Jones & The Six if the 70s vibe is more your style?
Aerial/drone footage
Couples looking to get a bird’s eye view of their wedding design might be intrigued by the use of drones to capture their upcoming nuptials. From overhead shots of your reception décor to wide angle views of the ceremony from above, this method will definitely take your wedding video to new heights!
Live streaming - Got friends or family overseas that unfortunately can’t make your special day? Why not go live and let them experience it from the comfort of their home? Encourage them to get dressed up for the occasion and pour a celebratory tipple to toast to you as newlyweds!

With this cutting-edge technology, you can capture all angles and details of your special day, from every side and direction. When you watch it back it’ll feel like you’re living the best day of your life all over again – what more could you want?!

Instagram-worthy reels
Photographers and videographers are experimenting more and more with shortform video content. Nowadays, some even offer the option to capture these special moments and transform them into 15 - 30 -second reels that are perfect for sharing on social media. Here’s to the ADVENTURES www.elitephotographics.co.uk www.jonathanaddie.com
The intrepid Scottish wedding photographer
Picture perfect
Now you know what’s hot in the world of film it’s time to see what trends are picture perfect this wedding season…
• Film photography: As with videography, this vintage effect is taking the photography world by storm. While digital photography remains a staple for most couples, requests for film have been on the rise. Point and shoot cameras give images a nostalgic, fleeting quality – especially when photographing fun-filled dancing and party scenes.
• Direct flash: Want to feel like you’ve been snapped by the paparazzi on your big day? Using flash photography is a great way to give that look that everyone is used to from pop culture mags and the red carpet. Another reason for the resurgence of flash photography is that it gives consistent lighting and helps to capture those intimate moments even in less desirable conditions. So, rest assured that even the unpredictable Scottish weather won’t stop you getting great photos!
• Candid imagery: The days of the staged wedding photo may be behind us with many ‘togs noting that more natural images from the day (where both the you and your guests’ emotions can be clearly seen) are often client faves. Will you be embracing a more candid, authentic form of imagery to really capture the spirit of your special day?
• Photos by guests: Some soon tobe-wed couples are giving guests the opportunity to catch unique and intimate shots on their own, so why not add to the carefully curated work of your professional wedding photographer(s) with this inclusive, relaxed idea? One big trend for 2023 is leaving out polaroid/
disposable cameras for your nearest and dearest to use at the dinner table –or they could take them to the dance floor (is this reminding anyone else of the iconic Friends episode where Ross and Chandler buy disposable cameras and dress up for a wedding reception they're not even invited to to snap some pics?) This is a great option if you want to expand upon the film trend with some personal footage from those at the heart of festivities.
Whatever media style you decide on, be sure to meet with your photographer beforehand (either in person or on Zoom) and closely examine plenty of their work to ensure they're the right fit for you. ♥

Lovin’ You is Easy
After a stunning Loch Lomond proposal and an impressive five years’ of planning, Sarah Black and Ritchie Goodall tied the knot at Ballogie House surrounded by deep pinks, purples and blues, all adorned with golden accents… The perfect summer wedding –in autumn!
“Ritchie proposed in 2017 and we initially planned for a 2020 wedding. Little did we know we’d end up with an extra two years to plan out the finer details, thanks to the pandemic. It was useful in the end, though, as we wanted to be sure the ceremony and everything else properly reflected who we are, and the extra time allowed that to happen.
Our first priority was definitely the venue and Ballogie was everything we were looking for and more. The stunning house paired with the blank canvas marquee was exactly what we envisioned.

The vibe we were going for was simple, rustic and colourful. Our colour scheme was very deep pinks, purples and blues as we wanted it to be very summery, matching with our original date of July 2020. When we had to rearrange for September 2022, we thought about changing but decided against it and had a summery wedding in autumn! Adding gold accents to those colours really brought everything together.
I had no idea what dress I was looking for but was very open to trying on all the different suggestions and I’m glad I was, otherwise, I don’t think I’d have chosen the one I did. I knew as soon as I put it on for the first time that it was going to be my dress. The champagne colour was something I’d never really seen before and I thought it’d really go well with the golden, summery décor. A matching veil and shoes pulled the whole look together. Ritchie chose the Pride of Scotland tartan (the purple hues tied in with our theme perfectly) and my bridesmaids were in deep pink.
A couple of days before the wedding we stayed at Ballogie House, just the two of us. It was lovely to have an evening to ourselves in our chosen venue, just enjoying
each other's company before everyone arrived. The wedding morning was relaxed – my bridesmaid made me a lovely high tea and we enjoyed a wee glass of bubbly to settle any nerves! We had a registrar perform the ceremony and personalised it by reading out three things we love about each other. We also drank from the quaich and were handfasted, using Ritchie’s Ancient Pride of Scotland tartan and the tartan my dad wore on his wedding day, literally tying the two families together. After the ceremony our guests enjoyed an acoustic guitar performance and lawn games while we had our pictures taken. It was so nice to see everyone mingling outside – Ballogie is a perfect setting for that!
The meal was amazing. We strayed from Hudsons Catering’s set menus slightly and they were so accommodating – they did an incredible job of taking everything we love and putting it into a meal. The speeches were great – a bit of everything from laughter to bittersweet tears, and then it was on to the evening festivities! Our band was incredible, playing banger after banger. We were both so worried we’d have to drag people up onto the dance floor but there was no need.
The whole day was just fantastic; a huge party with our nearest and dearest. I think everyone had been waiting so long for our day that they all really took the time to enjoy themselves, and we did too. There wasn’t one thing we didn’t enjoy.
Our advice to couples planning a wedding would be to take your time. There’s no need to rush with anything. You’ll find the best vendors that are suited to your style if you look around so don’t put pressure on yourself to book everything all at once! ♥
