Elegant, Classy and a Little Bit

y ss a S

Darren Davidson popped the question at the top of Ben Nevis and went to great lengths to ensure the ring would fit perfectly. Here, his bride Rachel Fowlie shares all the details of their big day, filled with endless elegance, hints of personality and a whole lot of love… “With two years to plan our wedding, we wanted to savour every moment. We chose to organise most of it ourselves with a little help from Jordana Events who really brought our vision to life. Our top priority was the music, and let me tell you, the entertainment we chose absolutely nailed it! Ginny & The Tonic got everyone on their feet during the meal, Corra had the dance floor packed all night and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers (a surprise addition from my Dad) added the perfect finishing touch.

6 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS

We knew The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa was the venue for us from the getgo. Trustworthy service, impeccable attention to detail and a top-notch team – it had everything we wanted. Plus it was essential for us to have the ceremony and reception in one location, and having the bar in the same room as the dance floor kept the energy high. It was the perfect choice. We wanted the vibe to be elegant, classy and just a little bit sassy. We went with timeless white and green decor, adding draped walls, statement columns and carefully selected florals to really make the space our own. I had no clue what I wanted to wear until I tried it on and, in the end, chose a beautiful creation by Suzanne Neville. It was the simplicity that won me over, and it just screamed elegance. I customised it with a daytime belt and another for the evening, and some jewellery from RedRocks.

REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 7

On the morning of the wedding the girls and I enjoyed a champagne and a lavish grazing table at The Marcliffe – me and Darren carefully avoiding each other all morning to keep the suspense going. Whilst we were prepping, our guests were getting photographed because we wanted each of them to feel extra special – it’s not every day you get a professional snap, right? After a perfect ceremony conducted by Sheila Lawtie our guests enjoyed drinks and canapés in the courtyard, and were serenaded by the band. The speeches, filled with laughter and heartfelt moments, preceded a delightful meal (which included an impromptu sing-along)! And our first dance was to Can't Take My Eyes off You, which started an evening of celebration. The entire day was filled with unforgettable moments and our advice to others in our position would be to enjoy the process and trust your chosen suppliers because you picked them for a reason.

in weddings?

Team GWD was so excited when wedding planning website Hitched revealed the top 2024 wedding trends. And we weren’t one bit surprised to see that, following loads more couples investing in treats for their loved ones on their big day, personalisation and the guest experience were at the heart of so many of them. To-be-weds are more focused than ever on making their celebration all about who they are – and we’re here for it. Are you? Celebrant-led weddings

With personalisation at the top of many wedding agendas, it’s fitting that celebrantled ceremonies are on the up. After all, this style of nuptials can be totally tailored to your very own love story, plus they offer flexibility in terms of time and place. You can create something truly unique here – what’s not to love?! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Wedding weekends

Incorporating the American trend of a rehearsal dinner the night before and a goodbye brunch the day after, wedding weekends are the way to go if you really want to make the most out of your time with your nearest and dearest. A must if people are travelling from afar!

Retro weddings

It’s so good when films, books and TV influence the wedding world and Daisy Jones & The Six is the latest media to do just that – interest in '70s weddings is on the up! From vintage hairstyles and wigs to rad retro attire, your photographer will thank you for this one.

The rental market

A money saver and planet-friendly, hiring items for your special day is a no-brainer for many couples. It saves you doing the searching, making and/or storing, too! The rental market isn’t just surging for décor though – more brides are hiring dresses, especially those going for a second gown for their reception.

Hello, dress code!

Would you consider a dress code for your guests? Whether it’s making sure they keep things casual or setting the tone for a formal affair, some twosomes are choosing to share the standards they expect on the day to avoid upset on both sides…

Gorgeous gifting

Hurrah – people are giving pressies again! A trend sparked by guests, online searches for ‘wedding gift idea’ are said to have more than doubled in the past year as there’s a move away from giving cash. Much like couples going ultra-personal, their nearest and dearest are keen to do the same and give something thoughtful they’ve selected with the newlyweds in mind. Not to mention www.wmtscottishstationer.com

www.hollieberries.co.uk

the fact that, amidst the cost-of-living crisis, gifting money can feel a bit scary because the amount you’ve ‘spent’ is obviously exposed. And, of course, something sentimental can be kept by the recipients forever. Lovely!

AI weddings

To-be-weds seem to be cleverly looking to new tech to help them plan their big day as ‘AI wedding’ searches online have doubled in the past year, and new terms like ‘AI wedding speech generator’ and ‘AI wedding invitations’ are being flagged up by search engines. Experts suggest this is worthwhile although perhaps for ideas only – things are

www.byrhea.co.uk

www.wmtscottishstationer.com

lovelier when they come from the heart not www.hollieberries.co.uk

a bot, after all! But no-one says the bot can’t help you get there. And if you are hoping to fully incorporate the AI response, play around with it to make sure it feels like ‘you’.

Rings that do more

Following on from AI weddings, wearable wedding tech is set to be the next big thing. Those planning their marriage are said to be seeking out ‘smart wedding rings’ which don’t just look good and mean something to them, they do something, too. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Hello, drop waist!

Following in the footsteps of the high street, drop waist silhouettes (where the bodice curves at the top of the hip before the skirt flares out) were all over the runways. Worried it’s not going to flatter? You’d be surprised – Google Zoe Kravitz’ 2020 wedding dress and we bet you’ll be asking your bridal boutique for a couple to try in this style!

Pretty tea-length dresses

If you’re looking for something a bit different from the norm, get your pins out with a fun, flirty and feminine tea-length dress.

Corset bodices

The corset is back! Symbolising femininity and grace, and creating the most flattering hourglass silhouette ever, these structured tops cinch in the waist with their delicate boning and intricate lace-up details. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Spaghetti straps

Added to ballgowns and loosely fitted column dresses, this resurgence of a classic design aesthetic is something we can get on board with.

Lace love...

…And in particular dramatic lace necklines. It was all about the decolletage on the Fashion Week catwalk with designers exploring ways to help brides highlight their stunning necklines in a daring, attention-grabbing way.

Pops of colour

Who says you have to wear white as you make your way down the aisle? Bridal designers are flirting with colour each season – and so are brides. Could your dress be your something blue? Or could you jump on the coloured veil bandwagon by adding a hue to your white dress this way?

Golden girls

Several collections glimmered with gorgeous gold hues – simply beautiful. This is set to be a trend that just keeps on giving. Bring it on!

Exquisite embellishments

Nothing says ‘bridal trends 2024’ quite like glitz, beading and texture. Add a shimmer of opulence and luxury to your gown with intricate beading and metallic embellishments. And why not combine them with beautiful laser-cut patterns or feathers for even more impact? You’ll add loads of depth and dimension – perfect if you’re going for a made-tomeasure gown where you can create a unique showstopper with an expert local designer.

Unveil the veil

Sometimes seen as a bit dated, veils are back with a bang this year, largely thanks to celebs like Sophie Habboo, Kourtney Kardashian, Olivia Attwood and Sofie Richie sporting dramatic versions of the traditional accessory. Options range from understated and timeless to incredible floor-sweeping lace creations… Imagine the photos! Personalisation is set to play a part here, embroidering something sentimental to add impact to your bridal look and make it unique. What will you add?

All the drama

Who doesn’t love a bit of drama when a bride makes her grand entrance? We’re talking gowns themselves (very voluminous with cascading layers of tulle) and those not-so-little details that demand attention. We’re loving the oversized bows, look-at-me sleeves and exaggerated trains for the ultimate wow factor. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Being comfortable

Certainly not a new trend, and probably the most important one of all – comfort! After all, who wants to be feeling anything but the best version of themselves on one of the most special days of their lives? Being comfortable means thinking about a lot of things but, rest assured, the advisors in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s beautiful bridal boutiques will keep you right on everything from choosing flattering, feel-good under garments to avoiding pinched toes in too-tight shoes to making sure you can actually move, dance and sit down in your dress. Finding ‘The One’ is hard enough but what about when you have two bridal outfits to find for your big day? Now happily married, Shannon and Hannah (one of our very special feature couples in this issue – check out their beautiful day on page 88 were both on the hunt for showstopping looks and we were keen to hear how they went about it. Did they consider matching one another? Or cleverly co-ordinating? Or was it all a top secret operation? Shannon tells us everything…

Did you both know what you’d want to wear as soon as you got engaged?

No – although we usually wear dresses or a jumpsuit for weddings when we're guests, so knew it’d be something along those lines. Plus, from being together so long, we kind of know each other’s styles. Beyond that, though, we had no idea until we started looking online. I had a feeling Hannah would wear something simple that showed off her slender figure; nothing princess-style. I knew I wanted something comfortable, and I liked the look of a V-neckline.

Did you take into account the season/venue/décor/anything else when picking outfits?

Mostly just temperature because we had a summer wedding. We didn’t want to be too hot when it came to tearing it up on the dancefloor but also didn't want to be cold walking down the aisle.

Did you think about shopping together since you may have been visiting the same type of boutiques?

Since we had so many decisions to make together for planning the wedding itself, we enjoyed doing our own thing for outfits and accessories. We didn't tell each other at all what we were picking out – we left it as a complete surprise on the wedding day, which was such a thrill.

BRIDAL COUTURE ♥ 33

Were there any 'rules' to avoid clashing?

We agree people look best in what they're comfortable with so didn't put any stipulations on what the other person could or should wear. That said, I think if either of us wanted something more out of the ordinary, we’d have floated the idea by the other to gauge the reaction!

So, how was the shopping experience? I’m all about everyday attire and the wedding dress was no different. I shopped with my sisters (otherwise known as my stylists!) and my mom, and had a little bit of an idea of what I wanted. After trying about five dresses, I found ‘The One’ – and got the seal of approval from my trusted advisors! Hannah, on the other hand, wasn’t sure going into it and tried on about 30… But the end result was worth the wait. She went with her mum then, when deciding between the final two, called in bridesmaid Natalie. Because I bought mine in the States (where we live) I kept it hidden in my sister’s house so Hannah didn’t accidentally spot it hanging, whilst Hannah’s was bought in Scotland and therefore easily hidden.

So, tell us – what did you go for?!

Hannah’s dress – white with an open back – showed off her slender figure (just as I’d predicted!) while mine was a fuller, capped sleeve gown that looked great when spinning around for a photo. For accessories, Hannah went local to RedRocks with her mum for one-of-a-kind jewellery and I used a hairpiece from my sister, Shea. When it came to footwear, we both went for simple shoes because you couldn’t see them under our dresses.

What did you think when you saw one another on the day? Hannah truly blew me away on how stunning she looked – the perfect combo of beautiful and hot! Her dress showed off her figure and fit her perfectly. Hannah said she was surprised as she’d expected something more fitting but assures me I looked perfect – she said she loved it, especially as it made for some great pictures.

What tips would you give to bride/bride readers based on your experience? Our advice would be to wear what makes you feel comfortable and special. Every person has their own style and there isn't one way to do things. So, don't stress about what other people think. Because you and your partner love each other, they're going to be in awe of you on this special day, regardless of what you wear. ♥

Choosing Bridesmaids your People

www.byrhea.co.uk

After saying “Yes!” to the love of your life, it’s your turn to start asking the big question to those you want by your side on your special day. But how on earth do you narrow it down to a select few?

www.aboynephotographics.com

Top tips incoming… 1. Take your time. In the engagement bubble, it’ll be so tempting – over a glass of celebratory fizz or three – to ask all your besties to be part of your big day because, of course, you want everyone to share in your joy. But remember, once you’ve asked, you can’t take it back. So, take a deep breath and hold that thought!

www.danirosephotography.com

2. Make a list of your all the potentials, both friends and family. And remember you can totally have a ‘man of honour’ or ‘bridesman’ so do include your boy-BFF if you have one.

BRIDEMAIDS ♥ 37

3. Avoid those you feel ‘have to be’ on the list.

www.byrhea.co.uk

Your wedding is all about you, and you have every right to choose the people you want to be by your side without interference.

4. Remember you don’t have to ask someone just because they asked you. Honestly, you don’t! 5. Talk to your other half about numbers. Many like the same-sized squads for symmetrical wedding day pics. If so, you may need to compromise!

6. Be mindful of budget. The bigger your entourage, the larger your spend, given some couples buy outfits, accessories and gifts for their bridal parties. Do your sums, pronto! 7. Think about what they’ll be doing. From www.danirosephotography.com

organising your single send-off to helping you find that outfit in to keeping pre-wedding jitters at bay, it’s a big job. Narrow down to anyone who may not have the ability or availability to get involved.

8. Consider the group vibe. And that’s the ‘maids/‘men

plus the larger group that incorporates your gang and your partner’s. No-one wants warring bridesmaids or a maid of honour and best man who’ve just broken up. That said, if they’re your must-have people, it’s worth asking them to put their differences aside for a day.

9. Be creative. Can’t decide whether to have your sister

or childhood BFF as your maid of honour? Have two MOHs – anything goes!

10. Look at other roles. If your list is still a little heavy, is there anyone you could invite to do another ‘job’ at your wedding instead? We’re talking speeches, singing, musical instruments ♥… www.aberdeenphoto.com

When it comes to weddings, not only the happy couples take centre stage. Gorgeous mummies and mother figures also play pivotal roles – and their outfits can attract loads of attention. But did you know that accessories are important too, and can really make or break a look? Read on below… Crowning glory

www.danirosephotography.com

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.danirosephotography.com

From oversized wide-brims to sassy little fascinators, the first step will be finding your vibe when it comes to headgear. That means thinking about colour, texture and style, as well as the rest of your outfit – you may like to funk up a simple jumpsuit with a killer hat whilst those with an extravagantly embellished dress might opt for ultra-subtle headwear. All that said, comfort is probably the biggest factor here. You’ll be wearing this for a decent length of time so triple check there are no headbands digging in or feathers obstructing your view. And make sure you feel like ‘you’ – there’ll be a lot of photos taken and memories made, so make sure you love your choice of headwear.

Clutch command

www.jonathanaddie.com

Think sleek, think chic! Much like the regular fashion world, wedding fashion dictates that clutches and petite purses are totally on-trend, but make sure to pick something spacious enough for your glam-up goodies. When it comes to design, don’t shy away from unconventional. Add a bright pop of colour that contrasts with your dress/ jumpsuit or if patterns are your jam, a geometric or floral clutch could be the perfect companion to a monochrome outfit. Remember, your bag isn’t just practical – it’s the cherry on top of your outfit sundae!

Footlose finesse www.danirosephotography.com

Word to the wise – a wedding is a long day and usually includes a lot of dancing, so ditch the painful stilettos and sway in kitten heels, strut in wedges or rock those block heels! And here’s a pro-tip: break 'em in beforehand for blister-free celebrations. Colour-wise, dive into the mood board of the wedding or draw inspiration from the season. Will you go matchy-matchy with your outfit or dare to contrast for a delightful, unexpected twist? Play with pastels for a soft, romantic aura or bold, vibrant shades for a lively burst.

Add some Highland magic: Think Scottish with rich palette choices – verdant greens, passionate reds or calming blues. And how about adding some old school vibes; fabrics and trinkets that tell tales?

Accessorise with a story: Brooches that narrate legends and belts that scream statement could be your go-to for a quirky occasionwear style. Experiment with materials – we’re thinking velvety finishes, lacey patches and more. Make every item a page of your story.

Sync with the scene: How about matching your vibe with the locale? From beachy breezes to barnyard chic or castle cool, tailor your attire to the venue and day. ♥

Traditional tartan On your wedding day, you might find yourself donning a kilt for the very first time – so, how do you make sure you're nailing it? Let's break down the Highlander outfit and see how it all comes together… Kilt length: Forget about regular waistbands; kilts (and trews) should sit up by your belly button, which might feel a bit higher than what you're used to. Length-wise, to make sure your kilt is at the right height, it should hit the middle of your kneecaps when you're standing tall. And remember to put it on after your shirt to avoid any bunched-up fabric. Buttoned-up waistcoats: Fasten all those buttons, even the sneaky bottom one. Because when you decide to ditch your jacket later in the day, you'll still look dapper with your waistcoat on. P.S. Why not throw in a pocket watch for that extra touch of class? www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.jonathanaddie.com

GROOMSWEAR ♥ 51

www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

Shirt and tie selection: Going for a straight tie? You'll need a regular or slim doublecuffed shirt in classic black or crisp white. If you're rocking a bow tie, a winged collar is the way to go. Feeling a bit casual with a Jacobite shirt and lacing? Lose the waistcoat and jacket in favour of a belt. Perfecting the sporran: Taking centre stage, it sits right in the middle of the kilt, aligned with the waistcoat buttons. It should be about four to five inches below the top of your kilt. Fasten it securely with chain straps and once it's in place, it shouldn't budge – no matter how funky your dance moves are!

www.jonathanaddie.com

Attaching the fly plaid: Wondering how best to rock it? Just toss it over your left shoulder, thread it through the epaulette and pin it with a brooch. It’ll gracefully drape down the back of your knee, and you’ll look like you belong on the set of Outlander. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.jonathanaddie.com

Tying ghillie brogues: These are the classic kilt shoes, complete with extra-long laces. Be sure to tie them just above the ankle and not all the way up the sock. Otherwise they slip down with every step! There's a knack to lacing these beauties so get a tutorial from one of the Northeast’s kilt specialists to avoid any tangles on the big day. Kilt hose (socks): More than just practical, these bad boys add a dash of flair to your ensemble. Many grooms opt for socks that match their jacket, creating a seamless look. Alternatively, stand out by picking a different shade from your groomsmen/women.

Sgian Dubh placement: This ceremonial accessory resembles a small dagger and usually goes in the top of the right sock (if you're right-handed) with about two inches of the handle showing. But if the idea of carrying a blade makes you feel a bit uneasy, swap it out with a replica for the same effect. Choosing the right tartan: With thousands of patterns in all sorts of palettes, picking one can be overwhelming. Traditionally, many choose one linked to their family name/clan or pay homage to their partner's. Others go with the wedding theme or colour scheme, or simply a kilt design that they love.

Suited and booted Your office attire is great for meetings but when it's your time to shine at the altar, you'll want something extra special. Here's what you need to know to put together your wedding suit with some serious style… Suit selection: Groomswear trends come and go but some timeless classics are making a comeback. Think pinstripes, linen fabrics and double-breasted suits, like those from the '90s and early 2000s. Colourful suits and mixing fabrics are also gaining popularity – do you think you could pull it off? Trouser length: When it comes to the length and style of your trousers, it's all about what you like. Have the the hem sit just above your shoes or go for an ankle-length look to show off fancy footwear. Speaking of shoes, these also influence trouser length. Wearing loafers? Go for a shorter leg and if you’re unsure to begin with get them a bit longer. Remember, they can always be tailored for a perfect fit. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

58 ♥ GROOMSWEAR

Suit jacket fit: The most important thing about this piece of the ensemble is how it fits and feels. If it's a two-button style, always fasten just the top button – it's the golden rule. Waistcoat etiquette: If you decide to wear a waistcoat, leave your jacket unbuttoned. It's not only more comfortable, it's pretty stylish, especially when you're sitting down.

www.aberdeenphoto.com

Shirt and tie selection: A black suit pairs wonderfully with a crisp white shirt, letting a bit of cuff peek out from below your jacket sleeves. If you're going for a bow tie, make sure it's properly knotted and positioned just right. A regular tie deserves a nice tight Windsor knot, perfectly aligned with your buttons and belt. Choosing the right shoes: Your choice of footwear can make or break your entire look so choose wisely. Brogues and loafers are formal, traditional options but the style you pick should complement your suit. Groom's buttonhole placement: The groom's buttonhole is typically pinned to the left lapel, but if you're a leftie, feel free to switch it up and wear it on the right.

www.danirosephotography.com

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.danirosephotography.com

Accessorising your suit: Once you've got the basics down, it's time to add some personality. Consider a bold tie and matching pocket square, a pair of funky socks or a classic pocket watch. ♥

60 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

In the

Wilderness Captured by the bride’s dad, the beautiful photos say it all when it comes to Chloe and Steve’s secluded and intimate wedding at Glen Dye. We hear about their big day (and Chloe’s big birthday at Finzean Hall) from the father of the bride himself, Logan Sangster of Deeside Photographics…

“Chloe has been a bridesmaid six times in the last few years and always said she didn't want any fuss over her own wedding. She wanted it to be relaxed with only candid photographs – nothing formal. Meanwhile, she’d booked Finzean Hall for her 30th birthday on 17 June with around 90 people on the guest list. A few weeks later, Steve, who’s very laid back and doesn't like any fuss either, appeared at my office and asked a certain question. My first response was: ‘Steve, have you seen the film Meet The Fockers? I’m worse than that dad!’

It became apparent there would be a marriage on the horizon and, after a couple of family meetings, they decided on a surprise wedding on the bride’s birthday weekend. They planned to tie the knot surrounded only by their immediate families (which ended up simply beautiful, relaxed and fun for us all) before arriving at Finzean to meet up with the party guests. I looked for a big house in Deeside that would work for the occasion and came across Glen Dye Cabins and Cottages. It was just a little different – rustic and quirky with a modern twist. There were books and artwork galore, a private bar tucked in an old cottage in the grounds, wood saunas and outdoor baths (where logs underneath keep them cosy). The families booked in for three nights and chose the spot for saying ‘I do’ – a nice woodland corner in the foothills of Clachnaben. My wife, Julie, asked on the morning of the wedding what I’d done

for the ceremony area… And my answer was: ‘Nothing’! So, we scoured around the place and pulled together wooden benches, mismatched chairs and lanterns to make a simple yet stunning ceremony location. Plus, the weather was warm and sunny, which was superb. They had a humanist ceremony and Chloe and Steve’s son Logan (Jnr) featured big time – in the Power Rangers suit he insisted on wearing despite the heat! Afterwards, we had drinks in the garden beside the retro caravan hired for the couple’s first night as newlyweds and enjoyed chilled tunes from Coynach Music who played during the ceremony too. At 4pm they were transported to Finzean (where the hall was closed off with no sign of the rustic wedding reception set-up waiting behind the shutters) and jumped out of the Land Rover, shocking all the guests waiting on the lawn as they caught their first glimpse of Chloe in her gown. It was an amazing moment.

After drinks, nibbles and chat, the shutters opened to reveal a marvellous country celebration created with oldstyle furniture and florals from our friend Jill. After a rather sumptuous barbecue, a choice of puddings in delicate mason jars and an extensive cheese board, everyone was surprised by the Secret Opera Singers, arranged by Julie and I. The couple and their guests were up on their feet dancing and it really got the party started – along with the fact that Chloe's brothers had gifted the couple a free bar, which meant no expense whatsoever for the guests! There have been so many comments about how different this wedding was and what a fabulous idea it was. The close family all played a part in creating the perfect day and we loved it – especially as there was not one bit of fuss, just as the couple requested.” ♥

The new era of wedding bands

So, you’ve said "Yes!" to the sparkler and the next big question looms: What ring will symbolise this commitment? Well, gone are the days when your only options were gold and silver. Today’s couples are basking in the radiance of varied metals with the gentle blush of rose gold, the enduring strength of titanium and the richness of platinum leading the way. And while diamonds have always taken centre stage, there’s now a dazzling array of alternatives. Think emeralds for the traditionalist, sapphires for the bold, rubies for the passionate and unique gems like moonstones or turquoise for the adventurous ones. For a little secret significance, have you considered an engraving; a hidden message inside, perhaps your wedding date or shared motto? A sweet little secret just for the two of you, it’s such a special way to make your ring hold deeper meaning.

A little something cherished companions www.danirosephotography.com

your

Stuck for a special gift to give your besties while they help you get ready to say ‘I do’? Show your wedding squad some love with gorgeous jewels they can keep forever. Here are some of our fave ideas right now:

Surprise your best boys and girls with keepsake jewellery boxes, each holding a personalised gem. These pieces aren’t just accessories, they’re tiny treasures infused with the unique connection you have. Why not add a heartwarming note too, sharing why it’s perfect for them? And top it off with a cute quote that captures your unbreakable bond.

Your boy BFF(s) deserve to dazzle too so go for dapper accessories that reflect their personality. Consider timeless cufflinks – and add a dash of modern flair by personalising with initials or this unforgettable date.

Alternatively, go for a suave tie clip or a sleek pocket watch (perfect if your nuptials have a bit of a funky vintage theme!) that’ll be perfect for elevating the already fancy wedding attire.

For your girls’ squad, think of delicate charm bracelets or pendants that resonate with each of them. Whether it’s a butterfly charm for the free spirit or a star for the one that’s always guiding you, these tokens become more than just jewellery; they’re little chapters of the many stories you’ve built together. ♥

76 ♥ FLOWERS

Floral Finesse Flowers

Flowers can play so much more than a supporting role in a wedding. From beautiful bouquets to centerpieces that level up your tables, flowers add vibrancy, fragrance and a touch of nature’s magic to your most special day. Luckily, with the rich floral heritage Scotland has, you have loads of choice. Let’s weed out the maybes and focus on the must-haves! Wildflower whims and whishes

Right now, everything is about challenging the charm of natural simplicity. This means bouquets that look as if they’ve been freshly picked from a Scottish meadow at dawn. Think wildflowers, soft ferns and those delicate blossoms that evoke nostalgia.

Sage serenade

Think about colour combinations that make hearts flutter – current wedding trends say sage green and blush are your answer, giving an earthy, muted palette with a hint of romance. Can you imagine soft sage foliage punctuated with blush roses or peonies? A match made in heaven!

www.aboynephotographics.com

Tales tied together

Don’t forget about the binding of the bouquet, which is now so much more than just a functional element. Could you add a touch of significance, like delicate lace from a loved one’s wedding gown or locked photos of special ones? Alternatively, look to heirloom www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

brooches to transform your blooms into a tangible memoir of cherished moments.

Textures and timelessness

While colours paint emotions, textures can craft stories. Soft, billowing blooms like peonies or roses can be juxtaposed against the rustic charm of thistles or the delicate elegance of baby’s breath for bags of impact. Think of crafting an arrangement that bridges timeless traditions and contemporary chic – but rest assured, your trusty local florist will keep you right!

Secret message bouquet

In the world of open expression, what about adding a touch of mystery? Introducing the secret message bouquet! This is a tradition rooted in the Victorian era where each flower holds a specific meaning so choose flowers with your partner based on what suits your relationship and the moments you’ve been through. Perhaps a dahlia for everlasting commitment or an aster for patience? This is a truly authentic touch for couples who cherish intimate expressions, and we’re here for it!

www.elitephotographics.co.uk

Remember, though, it’s not just about what’s trending but also about what’s resonating with your heart. Whether your blooms whisper tales of wild adventures, traditional roots or dreamy romance, ensure they’re a reflection of your love story. ♥

Hair and Bridal Brilliance Beauty

As your big day approaches and the excitement bubbles, the planning gets detailed but the quest for the perfect beauty ritual appears on the agenda too. Here’s how to ensure that your beauty shines inside and out on your wedding day… Hair hacks you can’t miss

Prep ahead: Whether you’re thinking relaxed waves or a chic updo, the key stands in preparation. That means monthly hair masks, regular trims and cutting back on heat styling to boost hair health. But why not ask your wedding hairdresser for some tips specific to your locks?

Get inspired: Pinterest and Insta will be your best friends for hair inspo. Look beyond the style itself too – how do you feel about some funky accessories or fresh flowers?

Embrace the rebellion: If you’re keen to keep your ‘do from taking a rebellious turn on the day, consider some of the totally on-trend styles described as ‘controlled messy’ – loose braids, for example, are just dreamy.

Practice makes perfect: Most hairdressers will offer you a wedding trial as standard. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other and let him/her get to know your hair. Share your ideas, ask for theirs, experiment with different styles and get some product recommendations.

Buzzing with beauty

Let’s jump into the world of dewy finishes and poppin’ hues! It’s all about glowy faces right now with matte make-up falling behind for the first time in years. What does this mean for me, you ask? Well, highlighter is your secret weapon! Opt for subtle rose or peach blushes and highlights to achieve that rosy glow. As for the eyes, smoky palettes are where it’s at. That means warm browns, tantalising golds and, if you feel adventurous, a hint of enchanting purple to turn heads.

Teeth tips

Your laugh? Already infectious. But your smile? It ought to match! So, pre-wedding, consider trying to get those pearly whites sparkling even more than usual. From (temporarily of course!) swapping out the ice lattes for a gnasher-friendly alternative to incorporating a whitening toothpaste into your routine to booking in for some specific tooth treatments, you’ll be dazzling by the time your big day rolls around.

www.jonathanaddie.com

Aesthetic enhancements

As mentioned, glowing skin is massively in so why not indulge in a beauty treatment or three before the wedding? Whatever you choose (from a rejuvenating facial to a subtle touch of filler) make sure you do it at least one week before and remember, subtlety is key. ♥ And there you have it, your roadmap to radiance. As you step into this unforgettable chapter of your life, remember that beauty is also an inside job, and confidence is always the best accessory. So, embrace each tip and tailor them to your needs while letting your authentic self-glow.

88 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

International Love

If you got the last issue of GWD you’ll have picked up some top wedding planning tips from US-born-and-bred Shannon Hutchinson and her Scottish sweetheart, Hannah Simpson. Now it’s time to hear about the big day itself, which was organised from the States and took place at the Northeast’s very own Maryculter House Hotel… “We gave ourselves two years to plan since it would be an international wedding, and we did it all ourselves… Well, with lots of help from Hannah’s mum Ann who was our ‘boots on the ground’ given we live overseas. We ordered everything to her, she picked things up and she even made our Scottish tablet favours – all 5lbs of it!

Food, drink and dancing were our main priorities, and we chose Maryculter for its culinary offering and overall aesthetic, plus they were flexible with our wants and needs. We wanted it to be simple, modern and fun so skipped out on a lot of the ‘usual’ wedding décor – there were no chair covers and we limited flowers and other accessories, using the freedup budget to provide an open bar until 10pm and the freed-up time to pull together our DJ’s playlist. We both love to dance!

90 ♥ REAL WEDDINGS Our colours were seaglass green, which Shannon really likes, and slate blue for Hannah. For flowers we did the classic Scottish thistle. Most of the bridesmaids were given a colour to stick to, a website to browse and permission to choose any style whilst Hannah’s two bridesmen and one of her ‘maids went for kilts; grey with ties to match the slate blue dresses. We stayed at Maryculter the night before with everyone in the bridal party and had a lovely pre-wedding dinner at one long table for 24 in a private room. It flowed nicely and looked so elegant. Our ceremony was somewhat traditional. The bridal party walked down the aisle followed by our brothers (we each have one) who escorted our mothers. Shannon then walked down with her dad, and Hannah with hers (we hadn’t done a ‘first look’ and Maryculter did a great job of hiding us from each other). Our celebrant, Neil, did a phenomenal job. He told our story, we said our vows, we laughed, we cried and we did the handfasting ritual. We used the same tartan Hannah’s parents and brother had used when they married, and Hannah’s dad assisted the process while Neil explained it. We loved that Neil always brings his dog to his ceremonies and she was so wellbehaved, lying down looking over the River Dee looking rather majestic. Afterwards we did a confetti toss then we went off for our couple photos with Dani and her second shooter, Louise. They had us laughing and feeling comfortable enough to be intimate and share some kisses without feeling awkward or staged, as had been our fear. When we got back to our guests, we were entertained by a bit of magic then had some patriotic fun with our Scottish and American flags, which turned into chants of ‘USA, USA, USA!’ then a rendition of The Flower of Scotland. It was so much fun.

REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 91

The meal was delicious and the speeches went above and beyond our expectations. They were followed by our first dance to The One by Kodaline, which we’d listened to early on in our relationship, joking that it would be our wedding song one day. So, it was! It’s a long song so halfway through our DJ invited everyone to join us. It worked and it was extra special. Later, we both did a dad and daughter dance to Elton John’s Tiny Dancer and there were two ceilidh tunes. It was fun to see the Scots show the Americans how it’s done! It was so nice blending not only our families but our cultures. We arranged the tables to be half and half – the Americans were keen to experience a Scottish wedding and the Scots were all so welcoming. It was a surreal moment for us to have everyone together, many meeting for the first time. We felt extremely loved and supported. After the celebrations we spent a week in Scotland doing touristy things with Shannon’s side of the family then a week hanging out with Hannah’s as she doesn’t get to spend much time here. We’re thinking of a more traditional honeymoon for our first anniversary. For others planning their big day, we’d urge them not to sweat the small stuff – no-one remembers what the chairs looked like so do what’s most important to you as a couple! Then, on the day, take a second to look around and enjoy the moment because all the effort will be worth it in the end. It is truly a day you’ll remember forever.” ♥

If you’ve booked a hotel, you’re going to be delighted to hear the best room in the house has the newlyweds’ name on it. The bridal suite is commonly used by the bride (in a bride/groom wedding) for her, the bridesmaids and mother of the bride to sleep in the night before then get ready in on the day, and the happy couple take it over at night. Sometimes, though, depending on factors like layout or availability of light for a makeup artist, the groom may have it the night before the wedding and his partner would join after the celebrations.

Cost per head/price per head

Many hotels will offer packages based on a price per guest to cover an adequate amount of food and drink for each person, plus other aspects that usually come as standard in this type of venue – chairs, table linen, cutlery, crockery, drinkware, a toast drink (see below), place names, etc.

www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

Drinks’ reception/cocktail hour

This is the time for guests to mingle, sip and snack after the potentially serious and emotional ceremony and before the party afterwards. You’ll get to do the same but are likely to shoot off for a couples’ photoshoot first. Plan for food, drinks (your hotel will suggest options, from signature cocktails to fizz to a full open bar) and, if you’re going all out, entertainment.

Some couples give their guests a little something to remember their day by. Not sure what to choose? Your hotel wedding coordinator will have loads of ideas for you – and may even be able to help source something.

Speeches

www.eastsidephotography.co.uk

Okay, okay, you know what a speech is – but do you know the order they should be done in if you’re sticking with tradition? With bride/groom weddings, you’d have the father of the bride followed by the groom then the best man. Many brides, bridesmaids/men and maids/men of honour also speak these days and this can be where it gets complicated but tradition suggests the following: father of the bride, groom, bride, bride’s squad, best man. LGBTQ+ wedding? Speech order tends to be more flexible, so one less thing you need to be clued up on!

Toast drink

www.danirosephotography.com

Nothing to do with heating bread, this is the drink at each person’s place setting at the wedding breakfast, and it’s sipped during the speeches. Usually, it’s a flute of something fizzy but occasionally hotel staff will offer a choice of drinks on the door before you sit down – wine, spirits or bubbles.

Top table vs. sweetheart table

A table for two, a sweetheart table is a great option for couples who want to enjoy their dinner surrounded by – but not next to – their nearest and dearest. Tradition, however, would see your hotel set up a top table where the newlyweds sit with their parents and bridal party. Your wedding coordinator can advise you on this, and table planning in general – will circular, rectangular, or even square or oval, suit your celebration?

Wedding breakfast

Nope, this isn’t the pre-wedding fruit platter you’ll be tucking into while getting into your gladrags. It’s the ‘dinner’ part of the day! 116 ♥ ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation VIP Guests If an Airbnb isn’t swanky enough and a serviced apartment feels like too much work (who has time to make breakfast when they’re getting wedding-ready!?), point your guests towards a high-end hotel when they’re planning where to stay after your big day. Here’s why we love ‘em…

1. As per above, you get your breakfast made for you! From delicious buffets to fine dining first thing in the morning, you can be sure your tummy will be lined before you hit the fizz. 2. Look out for helpful or luxurious added

extras, from ironing and laundry services to swimming pools and saunas. 3. Daily housekeeping means you’ll return to a beautifully made bed. Ahhh… 4. Looking for a nightcap or a bite to eat post-wedding? The hotel bar or room service may be able to help. 5. If you’d like a pamper the next day, head

for a hotel with a spa.

P.S. Did we mention some of the Northeast’s top guest accommodation offerings can also host weddings? The Copthorne (a four-star city centre hotel with an impressive granite façade), for example, boasts the Crystal Function Suite, which can host up to 200 guests and comes with a private bar. Once upon a time in the heart of Scotland, two hearts set out on a quest to find the perfect venue for their dream wedding. Their journey led them through lush valleys, along picturesque coastlines and into the enchanting world of Scottish castles and marquee magic. Join us as we recount their adventure…. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

TA N YA & B L A I R

Our Schivas Wedding Blair and I were engaged on 2nd January 2021. Right in the throws of the latest lockdown at that time. I immediately started looking for our perfect wedding venue. Looking online, I came across Schiva s Steading. A brand new wedding venue that wa s still under construction. Although, it wa s essentially a building site, with scaffolding and the f loors unfinished. It wa s so ea sy to envisage it complete. We loved it, and between the modern Steading and the older Schiva s House, the stunning gardens and surroundings, the whole estate wa s the perfect mix of new and old, modern and traditional. We planned to get married in the walled garden at Schiva s House, have our drinks reception then head up to the Steading for dinner and dancing. The best of the full estate. However, the weather on 6th May 2023 had other idea s. Being a Scottish wedding, we accepted that our plans had to change. Our celebrations would be at the Steading.

ALL IMAGES BY L AUREN POLSON

Tracy and Edward were on hand to deliver the wedding that the weather wa s going to allow us. Contingency planning at its best! The morning of the wedding wa s so fun a s we got ready at Newton House, across the courtyard from the Steading. Blair and his groomsmen stayed at West Lodge on the estate the evening before, and judging by the photos, they were also having a great time ahead of the wedding. Now we were all suitably glammed and I wa s in my wedding dress…the most surreal moment, after two years of planning, the many dress alterations appointments, the time had finally come. It wa s happening! Wow!! Walking down to aisle to meet Blair wa s incredible, I really tried my best to be in the moment, take it all in and enjoy it. It wa s such a special moment with my dad, a moment just for us a s we headed down to

Blair. The video footage shows just how proud my dad wa s and how delighted he wa s to be ‘giving me away’ to Blair. Our ceremony wa s gorgeous and so personal to us. Jac Ruddy married us and Blair’s daughter, Rachael, gave a lovely and funny speech about how love is like owning a dog. We were now married, and it wa s time to party. Blair and I with our bridal party were whisked away for our photographs. It’s such a conf licting time we felt. After the wedding is over, the photos and footage is all you have left from the day and I adore looking back on them. However, in the moment, you just want to have fun with your friends and family. It is worth it though because the photos and footage are stunning. My favourite part of the day wa s during the speeches and the meal. Mostly because we could just sit back, enjoy it and take every thing in! My dad, husband, best man and chief bridesmaid, Lynsey, all delivered speeches. Lynsey gave a speech because why should it just be men that give speeches at weddings, right?! After the meal, it wa s time to party the night away! It wa s the most fun atmosphere, our band played the perfect mix of wedding songs and a DJ set for the la st hour. We also surprised our guests with an Ibiza sty le saxophone set. Overall, for me a s a bride, the day pa ssed in a f la sh. I really wish I could have slowed down time. We had a dream team of suppliers but our day really ran like clockwork because Tracy and her team at Schiva s were always 5 steps ahead. She is fanta stic and is such a natural in her role at Schiva s. I have no doubt that Schiva s, still a relatively new venue, will continue to grow and get better and better with every wedding sea son. I will always be a Schiva s amba ssador, with nothing but good thoughts and feedback should anyone dare to a sk…a s I will go on and on.

Castle romance

www.aboynephotographics.com

Our couple's quest began with stepping into a fairytale and imagining exchanging their vows in the historic grandeur of a traditional Scottish castle. The rugged landscape provides a natural and stunning backdrop for their ceremony, and the castle's elegant interiors offer a regal ambiance for the reception. For ultimate luxury, consider a castle that offers exclusive use, allowing you and your guests to become the lords and ladies of the manor for a day – or the weekend.

Marquee magic

www.aboynephotographics.com

As our couple continue, they stumble upon a magical meadow – the perfect spot for a marquee. But how will you know if this is the right route for you? Well, marquees offer a beautiful blank canvas, allowing you to unleash your creativity and go wild with DIY decor. Whilst you’ll need to hire in much of what you need, from tables to heaters to caterers, it means your day will be ultrapersonal. And, remember, your marquee supplier can point you in the direction of loads of trusted contacts to help you out. Why not create an even more romantic experience by choosing a marquee spot near a scenic loch or serene forest, offering the joy of an outdoor wedding with the comforts of an indoor celebration?

Coastal charms

Next, the couple's quest leads them to the rugged Scottish coastline where they find a charming seaside venue. Isn’t there something inherently romantic about the sea breeze and the sound of waves crashing? If you love it too, consider coastal venues for intimate beach ceremonies, seaside marquees or clifftop gardens with panoramic views. And, of course, add funky beachthemed décor, like seashell centerpieces and coastal-inspired florals. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk www.byrhea.co.uk

Rustic retreats

As our couple delve deeper into the Scottish countryside, they discover rustic retreats that exude cosy intimacy – think charming barns and quaint byres with wooden beams adorned with fairy lights. Here, you’ll be wrapped in a warm and inviting ambiance, making your guests feel right at home. For a touch of whimsy, how about a bonfire beneath the starlit Scottish sky, complete with marshmallow toasting and storytelling that captures the essence of old-world charm? Alternatively, consider a whisky tasting, where you and your guests can savor Scotland's liquid gold, adding a quintessential touch to your rustic celebration.

Garden venues provide the perfect blend of elegance and nature – just imagine exchanging vows under a floral archway, surrounded by colorful blooms. Historic splendor

The grand finale of their quest brings them to a historic venue filled with timeless splendor, sophistication and opulence. Hosting your wedding in a ancient setting allows you to step back in time so go all out and hire in vintageinspired décor like antique candelabras and lace table runners. To add a playful touch, set up a themed photo booth for your guests too. 132 ♥ CASTLES AND STATELY HOMES

1. They’re only for royalty

Castle and stately home weddings are reserved for royalty or the ultra-wealthy – true or false? False, of course! In reality, these stunning venues offer a range of packages to suit different budgets, from grand affairs with hundreds of guests to intimate nuptials with a handful of people. Rest assured that regardless of your budget or wedding size, there's a castle or stately home that can accommodate your needs.

Some couples worry that choosing a historic venue means sticking to a traditional, vintage or medieval theme. While these can work wonderfully and actually be key to inspiring to-be-weds’ décor, no-one should feel confined by them. Castles and stately homes, like other venues, serve as versatile canvases for your vision. Whether you envision a fairytale romance, a bohemian affair or a modern celebration, these venues can adapt .

3. What about size restrictions?

As we mentioned earlier, many of these regal venues offer intimate spaces ideal for smaller gatherings, ensuring a cosy and romantic atmosphere. So, if you have a modest guest list, don't overlook these historic settings.

4. There’s nowhere for my guests to stay

Wrong! Many castles and stately homes have accommodation as part of their offering (imagine an overnight stay within grand castle walls?) and if not, your wedding coordinator will be only too happy to recommend something nearby. www.danirosephotography.com

5. I won’t get much freedom to be creative

It's easy to assume that such exquisite venues will come with an array of restrictions due to their age and heritage status. But although there may be guidelines to protect the property, remember they’ve hosted loads of weddings and those at the helm are well-versed in accommodating couples’ needs. So, discuss your plans with the venue coordinator and they’ll explore how they can work with you to create your dream celebration.

6. They’re far away and hard to reach Some couples assume that castles and stately homes are located in remote areas, making them

difficult for guests to reach. In reality, many of these venues are strategically situated near major cities, transportation hubs, and well-connected roads. Your dream wedding destination might be closer than you think, ensuring convenience for your guests and ease of travel.

7. They're out of my budget

Some couples assume that hosting a wedding in a castle or stately home is exorbitantly expensive. While these venues can offer premium packages, many also provide budget-friendly options. With careful planning and consideration, it's possible to have a memorable and affordable wedding in one of these majestic locations. Don't be discouraged by the belief that they're only for the elite; many couples from various budget ranges have

8. They lack modern amenities

It's a misconception that castles and stately homes lack modern amenities. Actually, the majority of these venues have been updated to include all the comforts and conveniences you'd expect. From contemporary lighting and sound systems to modern catering facilities, you can enjoy a seamless and comfortable wedding experience while still revelling in the timeless beauty and charm of the historic surroundings. In truth, castles and stately homes offer an array of options and can cater to a wide range of preferences, needs, and budgets. So, when considering your dream wedding venue, cast aside these misconceptions and let the enchantment of these historic sites infuse your special day with an aura of romance and elegance. Your castle or stately home wedding can be everything you've ever imagined and more. ♥

Michael Weir totally nailed his proposal to Kirstie McBeath, getting down on one knee at the couple’s gender reveal in May 2021. What a special moment for them, their little one and all their nearest and dearest! Here, Kirstie tells us what happened next…

“Our son, Mason, was born in the September so we didn’t start planning until February 2022. We looked at venues first because we wanted one that was central and had lots of accommodation. Michael’s family are from Peterhead area and mine from Aboyne, but some were as far afield as Alness and Edinburgh. Plus, we had friends travelling from all over Scotland and some flying in.

REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 143

We instantly fell in love with the modern décor at the Sandman and already knew the food was amazing, so booked for June 2023. Everything else fitted around that and planning was an enjoyable, exciting experience, as were our hen and stag parties! Michael went to Dublin for the Guinness Tour and footgolf whilst I stayed in a big house just outside St Andrews. There was a hot tub, cocktail making and games. Our wedding theme was modern with a navy and rose gold colour scheme, and the vibe was relaxed. We just wanted it to be enjoyable for everyone. The bridemaids wore navy dresses and the kilts were navy too. Michael had really looked forward to trying on outfits with his groomsmen and Mason, and he knew it would be a kilt for sure. He found the team at Mitchell Scott really helpful and, as soon as he saw a model with a grey and navy kilt, paired with a jacket and waistcoat, he knew it was the one for him. Mason wore the same and our flower girl, Hayley, wore a dress from my auntie and uncle’s wedding 15 years ago! We just changed the colours to suit our day. Meanwhile, I was nervous to start shopping and had no idea what I wanted! I went to two boutiques and found some styles I liked but was nowhere near finding ‘The One’. Ivory Grace was shop three and when I tried on my gown (a fitted dress with a 3D petal effect and a train), I fell in love and couldn’t stop smiling. I didn’t go for a veil but added pearl heels, a pearl headband and pearl earrings for some elegant accessories.

The bridal party and our parents stayed with us at the Sandman the night before then I had an amazing wedding morning with lots of laughs. It was really relaxed with music, dancing, hair and make-up and drinks. The boys had a chilled time– a walk and soft play for Mason then they got ready and went to greet the guests. We had a registrar come to the venue and kept the ceremony speedy and simple because we wanted to have as much time as we could celebrating afterwards! We went up to the mezzanine where Joyful sang and played guitar as we ate, danced and sang with our guests in between photos. Dancing seemed to play a big part of the day, with singing waiters getting everyone out of their seats during the meal too. It was a surprise to Michael from his best man – everyone got such a shock and loved it! The first dance was Lewis Capaldi’s Pointless. We’d originally chosen something else but heard this one a few months before the wedding and it just felt right. The ceilidh band and DJ took over and kept everyone on the floor all night, apart from when they were having a laugh over at the photo booth. All in all, it was an amazing day with all our friends and family. It felt like one big party. A few days after the wedding we went to Lanzarote for a week and it was the perfect wind down. We’d say to other couples to relax as much as possible so you can enjoy every moment of the planning process. Go to exhibitions to see what you like and don’t like. Let's dive into the heart and soul of your big day – the wedding ceremony. It's that magical moment when two lovebirds come together. CEREMONIES ♥ 145

To make sure your wedding ceremony is something you'll remember forever, give it some thought from the get-go. Most weddings follow a pretty traditional format – you've got the processional, readings, vows, ring exchange, pronouncement, the first smooch and then the recessional.

Get a second opinion: Before the big day, get someone else to have a look at your wedding plan: Maid/man of honour or best man/woman, we’re looking at you! Fresh eyes can spot things that might need a little tweaking, making sure your nuptials are top-notch.

That said, this is your chance to add personal touches that show off your personalities and make a real impression on your guests.

Have someone close to you sign the register: It's a sweet touch to have folks who mean a lot to you be a part of that significant moment. Whether it's your best friend or a family member, having them share this can make it even more special. ♥

Here are some tips to help you craft a ceremony that's not just memorable but also totally personalised: Start early: Don't leave this til the last minute. Get cracking on your ceremony planning early in your wedding prep journey. That way, you've got time to find inspiration and put together something that really tells your love story.

Chat with your officiant: Whether you've got a religious or non-religious officiant, have a sit down and work together to structure your ceremony. They’ll have loads of nuggets of wisdom based on their experience.

1.4k+ reviews on

Plan your vows: If you're going for those heart-melting personal vows, take your time to write them. For many, vows are a lifelong promise, so pick your words thoughtfully.

Keep it snappy: Unless you're doing a full-on religious service, aim to keep your ceremony around 30 minutes. That way, your guests stay interested and comfy throughout.

Give a guide: If your ceremony is a bit unconventional, think about giving your guests an order of service. It'll help them follow all the unique bits and pieces you've got planned.

It was an absolutely amazing day. Our ceremony was wonderful. Registrars do such a fantastic job and really helped keep it romantic and traditional but also a little bit silly and funny! We had so many compliments on it, especially the Scottish elements. Thank you so, so much for your wonderful help - it was utterly perfect! Josh and Alex

rom historic venues with the beautiful Aberdeenshire landscape as your backdrop to cozy gatherings close to home, our friendly team can help you shape an unforgettable and unique ceremony. As Aberdeenshire registrars, we pride ourselves on helping you plan your perfect ceremony, making it unforgettable and unique – these two words are the very things we think of as we work with you to create a ceremony which is personal, memorable and full of love. Whether you are considering a traditional venue or something more unusual, our modern registrar ceremonies can help you to make it happen. The perfect start for you is to contact us to discuss your hopes and ideas. We will provide advice, listen to your thoughts and get to know you as a couple. Over the years, we’ve conducted ceremonies in many beautiful venues and stunning locations throughout Aberdeenshire. Wherever you decide to have your wedding or civil partnership and however you would like it conducted, we will be with you every step of the way. To start your journey with us, simply call the team on 01467 468468 or email marriageandcivilpartnership@ aberdeenshire.gov.uk You can also visit our website at https://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/ registrars/marriage-and-civil-partnership/ You can also look out for us a local wedding fairs throughout the year.

One of our happy couples, Josh and Alex, chose stunning Fyvie Castle as the venue for their wedding recently. Alex said: “Everyone we encountered was happy and excited for us. The marriage booklet was incredibly useful – it highlighted exactly how customisable a registrar-led ceremony could be and was an excellent resource for us during our initial planning. “We really enjoyed our meeting to discuss the ceremony beforehand. Running through it with Jacquilyn who was to be our registrar on the day definitely put our minds at ease and we appreciated the little tweaks that she made to the structure and how she talked us through what would actually happen on the day.”

“We got off the call confident that it was going to be a fantastic ceremony and it ended up being even better than we’d imagined. It was wonderfully personal and the fact we had a couple of giggles throughout is just the cherry on the cake! A perfect start to a perfect day.”

148 ♥ FOOD AND DRINK

Food and A Day of Eating Drink

Whether you’re foodies or not, selecting nibbles and tipples is a fun and important part of wedding planning. Make the most of every opportunity with our full day guide… Wedding breakfast

No, we don’t mean the three-course dinner later – we’re talking actual breakfast! If you’re staying at a hotel, organise grazing platters ahead of time and if you’ve got a stately home to yourself, get someone on bacon roll duties. Fill your tummies as it’s easy to forget food amidst the celebrations.

To drink? Bucks Fizz, of course!

Drinks’ reception

Traditional canapés are still popular (make sure your caterer sets some aside for you) but many couples love added extras like crisp walls, sushi bars and ice-cream carts.

To drink? Fizz on tap and ‘barrows of beer on ice.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.byrhea.co.uk

Dinner

Think about what you love to eat as a couple, as well as the time of year, theme of your day and guest numbers – a wedding of 200 may be too large for a formal three-course meal, so a buffet-style feast or funky food truck might work better.

To drink? Decide on wine(s) for the table, and a toast drink.

Evening buffet

If you’ve gone traditional at dinner, this is your chance for a bit of fun. Think what you’d like after a night of drinking and dancing – a mammoth-sized pot of mac and cheese, a pizza parlour, fish ‘n’ chips or something else?

To drink? Tea and coffee (with cake) for the non-drinkers. ♥

CAKES ♥ 151

Wedding cakes have been gracing celebrations for years. But they're more than just desserts; they're symbols of love and unity. Let’s dive into their fascinating history – and help you pick the perfect cake for your big day.

As you’ll know, wedding cakes are still a must-have today. But have you heard that couples often save the top tier for their first anniversary, believing it brings good luck and prosperity? How lovely to enjoy the taste again a whole year later!

Unveiling the origin

Choose one that reflects you: Your cake should shout out your style and personality. Whether it's a classic tiered masterpiece or something whimsical, go for a cake that's all you.

Make it fit your menu: Lock in your cake designer once you've got your venue and caterer sorted. This way, you can ensure that your cake vibes with the rest of the meal. And remember sharing guest numbers and any allergy info helps your baker whip up a cake that everyone will get to enjoy – how about different tiers for different requirements?

Taste before you commit: A good looking cake should taste just as great. Set up a sampling session with your chosen Northeast specialist and take the opportunity to ask any questions you have ahead of the big day. Cover pricing, delivery, unexpected eventualities, and any recommendations for looking after the cake on the day.

Consider the season: You know the time of year can totally set the vibe, right? So, if you're having a spring or summer wedding, go for light and fruity flavours that match sunny days. And if you're tying the knot in the cosy autumn or winter months, consider tasty spiced options that'll warm everyone up. ♥

Way back, wedding cakes were all about luck and fertility. In ancient Rome, they'd toss wheat grains at newlyweds to wish them a fruitful life. Then couples would share a piece of cake, symbolising their two lives becoming one.

Choosing your cake

When it comes to picking the ideal wedding cake, it's a sweet journey (we couldn’t help ourselves)! To kick it off with confidence, here are some tips:

From these simple wheat cakes, we've come a long way. During the Victorian era, white icing became a big thing and it's still a hit today. As weddings evolved, so did the cakes. Families started stacking 'em higher and going for more unique styles. That's how we ended up with all those mouthwatering options like miniature cupcakes, fancy chocolate tarts and delicate macaroons.

What better way to kickstart Scottish nuptials than with one of our national traditions – a bagpiper kitted out in beautiful tartan? All you need to do is decide when you want them to play (outside the venue as guests arrive, as the bridal party arrives, as one half of the couple walks up the aisle, as the newlyweds head back down the aisle or all of the above?!) and what you want them to play. For the latter, you may have something symbolic in mind but if not, your trusted local piper will be able to suggest something fitting to the venue and theme of your day. Bagpipes are totally relevant post-ceremony too, though. Have him or her pipe in the grounds while photographs are being taken then again at the wedding breakfast to ensure everyone stands to attention as you take your seats. P.S. If you really love this Scottish sound, how about creating a real impact with a whole pipe band? There are loads of local options.

Ceilidh celebrations

Can you imagine the infectious rhythms of the fiddle, accordion and drums as your guests glide (or perhaps stumble!) their way through the Scottish ceilidh favourites, like the Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow and The Dashing White Sergeant? Tunes like these are great for getting friends and family of all ages on the dance floor, and even better if they’re not Scottish – visitors are sometimes even more passionate about our national dancing style than we are! With that in mind, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a ‘caller’ within your band who will keep everyone right with the complex steps. You have options, though – go all out with a full ceilidh band or choose a ‘regular’ band that can do a bit of www.aboynephotographics.com

ceilidh for you.

Sparks of love

Fireworks against our iconic local landscapes are pure magic – and even better if you can put a patriotic stamp on it. How about coordinating some rockets and sparklers in blue and white and, for an added bit of oomph, ask your supplier to launch them in time to some Scottish music? Do make sure to check in with your venue that fireworks are allowed and, if so, always hire in a pro to safely work their magic for you. ♥

options the Northeast has to offer. A little post-ceremony champagne run, for example, can give the newlyweds a private escape – and a chance to snag some killer photos in a beautifully decked-out wedding car/horse and carriage/whatever floats your boat!

Let's dive into the enchanting love story of Laura Douglas and Lee Dawson who tied the knot on 20 May 2023, celebrating at not one but two of the Northeast’s stunning venues. Their Haddo House and Meldrum House Hotel nuptials were nothing short of a fairytale…

Laura and Lee's love story began just over 10 years ago. Fast forward a decade and Lee decided to make it official by proposing on the top terrace of her parents' villa in Turkey. The engagement was a complete surprise and the ring from Rox added a touch of sparkle to their already glittering romance. Before they said: 'I do' they celebrated in style – Laura had a blast with a Mamma Mia-themed home hen and a trip to Benidorm with her closest friends. Lee, on the other hand, jetted off to Prague with 17 mates for a memorable stag do, just a week before the big day.

REAL WEDDINGS ♥ 173

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

The couple had a two-anda-half-year planning journey, which helped them make sure their dream wedding would be free from any unexpected worries. They took charge of planning themselves and the groom took the lead on some parts (mainly tasting cake samples)! Their priority was selecting the perfect venue – and they picked two! For Laura there was no doubt that Haddo House was the place for their ceremony. The enchanting, picturesque location held a special place in their hearts and they'd often visited with their dog. It proved the ideal backdrop for a fairytale wedding where they envisioned a traditional ceremony with Bridgerton

vibes… Followed by an all-night party at nearby Meldrum House Hotel, which they’d also fallen in love with. While Haddo retained its timeless elegance, White Wedding Co brought the to-be-weds’ romantic vision to life at Meldrum with dreamy flower walls, picture-perfect archways, pretty blossom table centrepieces and more – all in a pink, silver and white colour scheme. Laura visited two bridal shops and while the first left her with mixed emotions, the second – Perfect Bridal Rooms – was a dream come true as Nadiah, her consultant, helped her find the modern, lacy, sparkly dress that captured her heart. To complete her look, she added pearl details, and Quality Alterations in Dyce ensured her dress fit like a glove. On the wedding morning, Laura and her ‘maids enjoyed a relaxed and heartwarming time at her family home while Lee and his groomsmen got ready at Meldrum, taking photos and having a tipple or two. They said their vows in a traditional Christian ceremony at Haddo, conducted beautifully by Dr. Rev. Alison Swindells, before heading out to the manicured gardens. The newlyweds and their

guests were serenaded by the Rococo String Quartet, and canapés and endless prosecco and beer kept everyone in high spirits before they headed to Meldrum for the reception. Reflecting on the day, Laura and Lee remember their highlight as their entrance into the evening meal when everyone stood up to clap for them. But the end of the evening, when Loch Lomond played and everyone got teary-eyed, was also special. Afterwards, they jetted off to Thailand for a three-week adventure – the perfect way to extend their wedding bubble. For all the couples planning their own magical day, Laura and Lee offer this advice: "Enjoy the process, take your time, and savour every moment. We couldn’t agree more!" ♥

Photography Nailing the First Hello

Not sure where to start with photographers and videographers? Well, take a look at the websites and social channels of the outstanding selection of northeast experts (top tip – many of them advertise within these very pages!) then narrow them down to a shortlist of those you think will capture your day in a way you’ll love forever. Next step? Meeting them to see if you work well together because it’s as much about personalities vibing as it is about their expertise. Plus, recording these lifelong memories will take up a significant amount of your wedding budget so choosing the person/people to do that for you is oh-so-important. With that in mind, here are some ideas of what to ask during that first hello, whether it's face-to-face or via video…

Can you shoot in the style I’m after?

If you’re ahead of the game and know the styles you love (it doesn’t take long to flick through the pages of GWD and see that you’re attracted to some types of pics over others) make sure you’re upfront about your preferences at the very start of your chat.

Or, actually, what is your shooting style?

If you haven’t done any prior research (which is totally okay by the way!) let them explain the terminology to you. They’ll talk about candid, reportage and documentary styles where you’ll barely notice them, and end up with a natural, fly-on-the-wall account of your day. Alternatively, there are formal styles, which means you and your guests will be posed to create images that could be on the pages of a magazine. You’ll quickly learn what’s for you and what’s not, and remember that some will offer a combination – you can get your quirky candid memories and still round up the troops for a family pic to go on gran’s mantlepiece. www.eastsidephotography.co.uk

And what about your editing style?

www.deesidephotographics.co.uk

Photographers and filmmakers can vary massively when it comes to post-production (when technical processes are applied to create the incredible finished version), so think whether you’re drawn to bright, colourpacked pics, those with more of a moody feel or perhaps nostalgia-filled black-andwhite images. With video, ask whether they’ll add music over your film and, if so, who chooses it.

Can you share some testimonials?

Word of mouth is incredibly powerful and one of the best ways to find the photographer or filmmaker for you is to hear what others think. You might even want to ask to speak to a recent client – quiz them on how the day went and how they felt about the end result post-wedding.

www.aboynephotographics.com

Can you share a full wedding album/ film with me?

Like the above, this is all about getting a feel for a company and/or person by exploring what they’ve done before. Many will share a selection of their most impressive shots/film clips online but it’s not often you see a whole wedding, start to finish (understandable, though, as that would be a lot of uploading)! So, although you’ll probably have to ask for it, it’s worth doing to get an idea of how your whole story will be told.

Are you available on my wedding date?

This could be your dealbreaker so don’t forget to ask. Some couples, though, fall so hard for a supplier that they’ll make sure the date suits them and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s lovely!

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.byrhea.co.uk

PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM MAKING ♥ 181

Have you worked at my venue before?

Less of a dealbreaker, more of a bonus. If they’re familiar with your venue they’ll know all the tricks of the trade in terms of space, light and maybe even timings, as well as being on first name terms with the staff. That said, a photographer who hasn’t shot there before will be full of excitement about this new stomping ground and may uncover some hidden gems for those cute couple pics that tried-andtested photographers may have overlooked. Why not suggest a site visit together pre-wedding?

Would you like fed on the day?

This is a biggie! If you consider that these important suppliers are likely to be there from first thing in the morning (you can’t miss those getting ready shots, can you!) until after the first dance, that’s a pretty long old shift – and tummies will be rumbling. As such, most couples include photographers and videographers in the headcount for the wedding breakfast, even if just for the main course. They’ll thank you, for sure!

We don’t want to tempt fate but what are your back-up plans if there’s an emergency!?

Sudden illness, wild weather, global pandemics… We’ve seen it all and whilst most weddings go without a hitch (pun totally intended) there are the occasional few that run into a bit of bother no-one could have predicted. So, do check out what would happen in these circumstances (and this is one to ask your other suppliers too).

How much do you cost?

Always the elephant in the room yet always one of the most important things you need to know – the potential impact on your wedding budget. Find out whether your preferred supplier charges hourly or offers package options and if it’s the latter, drill into what exactly they are. Can you pick and choose how much of the day you want covered if you’re on a budget?

Do you have a second shooter?

Sometimes creatives bring a second body with them, which is a winner for couples who want to relive their special day from as many angles as possible, or simply capture both halves of the couple getting ready, or both the drinks’ reception and the all-important couple shots – one person can’t be two places, unfortunately. www.danirosephotography.com

Can we arrange an engagement shoot?

Lots of photographers offer this now, whether as standard or as an added-extra, so they can get to know you before the big day arrives. Although it might feel daunting, it’s a great opportunity to make friends, practice being on camera and score some beautiful images you’ll savour forever. You might even want to use one on your invitations…

When will I get my photos/film? www.deesidephotographics.co.uk

www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Photographers and videographers know how eager you are to see the end result but the postproduction process is time-consuming and don’t forget that they’ll be shooting weddings other than yours around the same time. If you can get a ballpark figure of the wait time ahead of your nuptials, it means you won’t be constantly checking your inbox – or filling your suppliers’ with “Is it ready yet?” e-mails!

And what exactly will I get?

As part of the budget chat, discuss the end product(s). Photo-wise, would you like a big, glossy keepsake album? Statement prints ready-to-hang? A simple image-filled USB stick to do with as you wish? Or all of the above? And for your big blockbuster movie, do you want a link to download digitally or a branded DVD? Make sure you’re on the same page as your supplier so there’s no disappointment down the line.

Will I get a sneak preview?

Find out if you’re likely to get a few of the highlight images in the days following your wedding, or even a film clip before the big movie release. Perfect for sharing on Insta ASAP! ♥
