to your Spring/Summer 2024 issue of Grampian Wedding Directory!
What lies ahead for the rest of 2024, you ask… Well, it’s going to be weddings, weddings and more weddings! A wonderfully busy weekend at Your Wedding Exhibition (YWE) in January confirmed it’ll be another busy year, with suppliers and couples still playing post-pandemic catch up and a whole host of newly engaged twosomes joining the party too.
Talking of which, if the big question has only just been asked or you’ve still a lot of wedmin to do before the big day rolls around, make sure to put 18th and 19th January 2025 in your diary. YWE will be back at P&J Live!
That’s not all, of course. Everyone needs some guidance and encouragement and that’s what these very pages are here for. Whether you delve into Grampian Wedding Directory (GWD) in print or via digital, make sure you take advantage of all the wealth of inspo and advice available.
From mood boards (they’ll really get you thinking about the vibe of your celebration) to run downs of real local weddings that’ll make you so excited for your turn! This issue we’ve got something for everyone, from Murray and Lila’s elopement (complete with an extra few VIPs and a visit to The Enchanted Forest) to Hayley and Michael’s weekend-long Ballogie bash to a Banff Springs celebration that was ultra-personal – and everything in between.
Talking of heavenly venues, who fancies dinner, bed and breakfast at the beautiful Pittodrie House Hotel? Turn to page 22 for more details and your chance to win this treat. Do keep an eye out for new competitions that’ll be released in the weeks and months ahead too.
Finally, a huge thank you again to the team – Carly on design and Claire, Andreea and Danielle on the words… I just do the talking!
Enjoy,
Simon
P.S. Did you know GWD is the only wedding magazine in Northeast Scotland? So, when GWD helps you, please consider helping GWD by letting your booked supplier know where you found them!

Our House Party
8 ó REAL WEDDINGS
Hayley McCabe and Michael Greig met online in 2015 and took a year to realise they’d known one another as children! Fast forward to 2021 after the groom proposed on a private cruise in Tenerife…
“We knew we wanted a weekend-long wedding with only our nearest and dearest so looked for an exclusive use venue that would suit an intimate celebration. When we found Ballogie House and saw its Thursday to Monday package we knew it was ‘The One’. It could accommodate up to 60 guests and we had 46 plus the two of us so it was a great fit for our relaxed house party vibe.
As it was October, we wanted an autumnal feel. Flowers and décor were rich autumnal colours paired with nudes, toffees and creams and there were pumpkins and pinecones scattered throughout. We added celestial details, like stars hanging from the ceiling, star/moon cocktail stirrers, celestial hair pieces, ontheme signage and a giant crescent neon sign that said ‘To the moon and back’.
Instead of a guestbook, we chose a six-litre bottle of Champagne that was written on with a gold marker. Afterwards, we chilled it and popped the cork on Sunday when we carried on the party with our closest friends and family. It now sits in our dressing room with fairy lights inside.
REAL WEDDINGS ó 9 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
I did a lot of research before booking bridal appointments but fell in love with my dress as soon as I saw it. It complemented my English Rose complexion, and the beading and detailing was like nothing I’d ever seen before. I felt like a Hollywood starlet! I added Jimmy Choo bridal shoes and finished the look off with a hairpiece (I’d ordered a few styles to try and was glad I did).
My two dearest friends were my bridesmaids and they wore beautiful toffee-coloured velvet dresses and matching shoes with a hint of sparkle. I’d asked them to be by my side on a spa weekend at Thainstone House, surprising them with a cake in the shape of a ring that said ‘Will you be my bridesmaids’? I also gave them gift boxes with photos of us, perfume, make-up brushes, a jewellery box and a personalised bracelet.
Ballogie’s five-day package meant we could really enjoy the venue. On Thursday it was just us two. We made some finishing touches to the décor (feeling like kids running around the big house and picturing how it would be in the days to come!) then chilled out in the hot tub. Friday was when our bridal party arrived and we had
a rehearsal with Amy, Ballogie’s amazing wedding coordinator. At night, the boys stayed in the lodge and the ladies in the house. We had a relaxing evening with drinks, food platters, gifts and dancing. Saturday was the big day… And it rained! But they say it’s good luck and I think we had enough rain (and luck) to last us a lifetime that day. We’d hoped to get married outside but thankfully there was a contingency plan to set up in the marquee. We had a humanist ceremony and, beforehand, used a service that’s essentially AI for vow writing. It asks you questions and shapes a script that you can then edit to make it your own. It was a lifesaver!
Afterwards, we got family photos, mingled with everyone then headed off in a family friend’s vintage Pontiac car for couple photographs. Our guests, meanwhile, ate, drank and enjoyed our entertainment – a live saxophonist, an audio guest book and a live watercolour artist.
10 ó REAL WEDDINGS www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
For the wedding breakfast we opted for two banquet-style tables so there was no top table and it just felt like a big informal meal with friends and family. The meal from Val and her team was incredible and the speeches were great. By the end everyone was in tears with laughter.
Our first dance was an instrumental version of Have I Told You Lately by Van Morrison played by our saxophonist, swiftly followed by Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust to get everyone on the dance floor. It was real house party vibes and the DJ carried on until 12.30am.
The whole weekend was one to remember, especially the after-party on Sunday. One thing I would say, though, is that I really, really appreciated my bridesmaids. After the ceremony and initial mingling, your wedding day can feel a bit overwhelming. I’d say to others to, of course, take a few private moments with your now-
spouse but also think about taking time with your bridal party. We nipped upstairs to the bridal suite to use the toilet and they had a bottle on ice waiting. They said to take 15 minutes just us as and it was so nice to just breathe and enjoy each other’s company… And snap a few selfies!” ó

Getting Started Just in Case
Prepare
for the worst but hope for the best – we can’t help but think this phrase is pretty relevant when it comes to wedding planning. Whilst you desperately want every single thing to run smoothly, it’s worth acknowledging that this may not be the case. And, should the worst happen, a back-up plan will stand you in good stead. The reward for this justin-case prep, of course, will be when you don’t actually have to action your plan because everything goes just as you imagined. Perfect!
Whilst some mistakes, like stumbling over your vows, are cute and can create lovely memories, some are more serious and impactful. You might forget something at home, guests may be late, the weather could decide not to play ball or, simply, something might just not be going how you envisioned it. So, here’s a step-by-step guide (that hopefully you never need) of how to handle it:
1. Re-centre
Step back, take a deep breath and remind yourself of your priorities. Yes, a last-minute call off that messes with your beautifully printed table plan is annoying but how important is it really? As long as you’ve happily tied the knot, you’re winning. Consider also taking a moment out with your partner if things are getting too much. Not only will it give you a breather, you’ll remember why you’re there in the first place.
2. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail
Plan as much as you can in advance, from advising caterers about dietary requirements to giving your photographer a heads up on the vision you have in mind for their images. Show them what you like and don’t like, and create a list of must-have shots, from the cosy couple pics to the formal family photo your gran would love on her mantlepiece. And if you’re depending at all on the weather, keep an eye on the forecast during the leadup – and prepare a contingency plan. Bad weather incoming? Stock up on brollies, wellies and blankets, as well as making sure someone is responsible for securing and weather-proofing outdoor signs and décor. At the opposite end of the spectrum, you’ll want to send one of your bridal squad out for coolers, fans and sun cream if a heatwave is unexpectedly on its way.
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk 12 ó PLANNING
www.elitephotographics.co.uk
3. Focus only on what you can control
Can you do anything about whatever has gone wrong? If so, get to it! If not, take a deep breath and accept that you can’t control everything. And on one of the most important days of your life, is it worth stressing over something (probably a small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things) that you can’t fix?
4. Speak up
Whether in the moment or during the aftermath, it helps to talk. If a supplier made a mistake that bothered you or impacted the celebration, make it clear that you were disappointed. After all, you paid for a service and it should be delivered as promised. That said, Northeast suppliers have the most wonderful reputations so this one shouldn’t apply! Meanwhile, take advantage of your support system and spill all to your besties. They’ll be able to make you feel better and, guess what, they may even not have noticed the ‘big’ mistake you’ve been worrying about!
5. Reflect on the good
It’s natural to focus on something that went wrong but could you shift your attention and think about how many things went right? 99.9% of them probably! Remember and talk about the best moments from your day because these will be the ones that stick with you for a lifetime. ó

The Show Must Go On
Not even relentless snow and ice stopped the wedding wonderland that is Your Wedding Exhibition (YWE). To-be-weds and suppliers were out in force to celebrate and support the Northeast’s wedding industry at the start of the year. Here’s what went down…
A great success overall, the YWE team and hundreds of local vendors welcomed more than 2,000 visitors to the two-day show at P&J Live –and it was certainly one to remember.

14 ó EXHIBITION
From couples setting out on their planning journey (Christmas engagements galore!) to those just looking for a few finishing touches, it was positive feedback all-round from those who attended to search for suppliers and get the low-down on planning a wedding in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. As always, though, the fashion show was a big draw and provided plenty inspo for those looking for special outfits for themselves and their VIPs.
YWE welcomed lots of first-time exhibitors (Herbie Wedding Car Hires, Dutch Courage Bar Hire, PB360, Charleton Fruit Farm and Paper Scissors Films to name a few) but the much-coveted best stand award went to Lana-Lou’s Cake Studio. With so many inventive designs, runner-up awards were given to 3 Tiers Creative, Concept A Designs and Hey Sugar Cake Studio. Well done everyone!
YWE 2025 is already pencilled in for next January but if you simply can’t wait that long or want to relive the fun of this year’s event, head to www.yourweddingexhibition. com to view the photos and videos. Can you spot yourself and your wedding crew?! ó

Bridal Couture Let’s Get Dressed
Once you’ve booked your venue, your mind will inevitably go to the next most important thing – what on earth will you wear!? Well, your wedding day is all about you so your wedding look should be too. Here’s how to make sure every aspect of your outfit works for you…

The dress/jumpsuit/whatever you choose
First things first, do your homework before hitting the shops. That means browsing Pinterest and Insta, and it’s worth looking at pics of recent weddings you or your pals have been to. What did the bride wear and what did you think of it? Could you see yourself in something similar? Or is it a definite no-no? Of course, everyone has different shapes and priorities (comfort versus style, for example), and outfits can look totally different from one body to the next.
If you see something you like, find out the name of the designer and check them out online. If lots of their gowns are ticking your boxes while you browse it’s a good idea to look at where the label is stocked near you… Then it’s time to try on!
There’s one thing you really need to bring when you go shopping and that’s an open mind. Put your trust in the bridal boutique experts (Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have some of the best out there!) and take advantage of their long-established knowledge. They’ll instinctively know which styles suit which shapes and will be able to answer questions, address concerns – no question is a silly question, remember – and offer great suggestions.
Fallen in love with a gorgeous gown or totallyon-trend jumpsuit? It’s worth nothing that as good as an outfit may look on the hanger, and on you, the most important question to ask yourself is if it’s comfortable. You’ll be wearing it for hours and you’re going to be in all sorts of positions – posing for photos, sitting to eat and dancing the night away. So, get creative and test it out for all eventualities in the shop!
Finally, sustainability is big right now. If you’re an eco-conscious bride, you have plenty of options for going green with your wedding look. Could you buy preloved, rent or plan
www.byrhea.co.uk
26 ó BRIDAL COUTURE www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

to sell on afterwards? Alternatively do your bit by committing to a brand that promises planet-friendly dresses.
The dress/jumpsuit/whatever you choose – Part two
Whilst your dream dress may be perfect, it may not quite be perfect for you at first try-on… And this is where the Northeast’s talented alterations specialists come in. Whether it’s a case of adding some bespoke detail to make it own (from adding sleeves and a delicate embellishment to taking two separate dresses and creating the perfect mash-up) or simply giving the gown a nip and a tuck nearer the big day, almost anything is possible.
Not sure where to go? Some stores have an in-house alterations specialist, which is very handy, but if not ask the boutique for their recommendation and get booked in in plenty of time. They get busy fast, especially in peak wedding season.
The accessories
Everyone wants to personalise their wedding style to some extent and that’s where accessories come into their own. Depending on the season, a cover-up is a great place to start because it can come on and off during the day to change up your look.
If you’re saying ‘I do’ in the height of winter, invest in a luxe fur coat to keep you cosy during that potentially snowy photoshoot and if you’re marrying in spring or summer, stick on a funky personalised leather jacket for the evening reception. Of course, there are capes, boleros, cardies and so much more to choose from – why not ask your consultant at your fitting what they’d recommend for your chosen outfit?
Jewellery is another game-changer for some brides who really want to demonstrate who they are. If you have wedding jewels in mind – a family heirloom, for example – bring
Private Bridal Suite for exclusive use of our Brides, collections by Enzoani, MoriLee, Ronald Joyce, Justin Alexander and True Bride.

BRIDAL COUTURE ó 27 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
them with you. If not, you’ll find most stores have options to try, as do the northeast’s high-end jewellers, of course.
The undergarments
Did you know underwear is mega-important when pulling together your wedding outfit? Wearing the correct (and correctly fitted) lingerie is the secret to making sure you look and feel your best. After all, who wants to be thinking about VPL or an overly tight bra strap all day? Bridal boutiques know their stuff when it comes to undies so get all the info you can from them (can you get cups sewn into your dress? Or do you even need underwear?!) but bear in mind there are local experts in this area who can also kit you out with what you need.
Meanwhile, don’t forget about the garter, which is one of the oldest wedding traditions. Worn discretely around your leg under your outfit, you’ll find they’re usually made of ruched satin or lace. But custom garters can be made however you wish… Time to get creative?
Finishing touches
You’re almost there… Just a few more elements required! First up, footwear – and that’s something some to-be-weds have sorted before they’ve even settled on a venue, never mind what they’re wearing. If this is you, bring them to try-ons so you can get an idea of how they’ll look and feel on the day. If not, there’ll be sample pairs to try in the boutique, giving you an initial idea of the styles available before you browse the endless options out there. You don’t have to go conventional, though – from the typical ivory satin shoe to a pair of personalised Converse to funky Doc Martens to welly boots, there’s a style (or sometimes more than one) for every foot!
Last but not least, whilst a veil isn’t essential it can really add something to your overall vibe. From birdcage and bandeau to churchlength and cathedral-length, there are lots of options and the Northeast’s trusted bridalwear suppliers will keep you right every step of the way. ó

Double Dressing
Last issue, we spoke to Shannon and Hannah, one of our special feature couples, about their dress shopping journey. It wasn’t just about falling in love with ‘The One’ – it was about finding two bridal outfits for their special day. This time, it’s over to Gemma and Heather Leighton-Bruce whose Raemoir House nuptials were shared in the 2022 autumn winter issue of Grampian Wedding Directory. Did they consider matching one another? Or cleverly co-ordinating? Or was it all a top secret operation? Heather tells us everything….

“When we got engaged, we both knew we wanted to wear dresses but apart from that, hadn’t thought about it any further. In fact, we weren’t sure how to navigate the process at all – we were nervous about either clashing or ending up in the same dress!
So, we decided to plan our outfits together. It was nice to turn it into something we could share… And let the professionals take control! We shopped together, making a day of it with our mums and bridesmaids, and the ladies who supplied and altered the dresses were outstanding. We didn’t really take into account the season, venue or décor. Our priority was simply feeling good in what we were wearing.
Gemma, who didn’t have any ideas about what she wanted apart from knowing she wanted it to complement mine, ended up in the first dress she tried on. She saw it, liked it and that was that! Gemma wanted her shoes to be a pair she’d wear again and something not traditionally bridal so went for Irregular Choice heels.
Meanwhile, I knew I wanted a classic, timeless dress and had a couple picked out. The reaction from my mum and Gemma helped me to decide on ‘The One’. I had the same idea for shoes, although comfort was my priority and I liked the idea of a bold colour. My other accessories included jewellery from my late granny (wearing something with a family connection was important to me) and a veil, which I’d always wanted. It added a bit of sparkle and complemented Gemma’s dress.
Although we’d already seen each other’s outfits, it didn’t compare to seeing them on the big day when everything came together –the dress, its alterations, the hair, the makeup and the accessories… Wow!
For other bride/bride readers, we’d simply tell them to remember its their wedding and their outfits – there shouldn’t be any rules to follow.” ó www.byrhea.co.uk

Wedding Party Plans
From mates of honour to groomsmaids and more, couples now include all their pals in their wedding day line-up – here’s how it’s done!
Numbers
The average wedding party size is around four per side but you can have as many or as few as you like! For smaller celebrations, it might be worth limiting your squad but if you’re going big, you could load up on the moral support. Remember though, the more you have, the more details you need to organise.
Timing
It might be temping to ask all your besties
to sign-up as soon as you get engaged but give yourself a good month to think over your options – and coordinate with your other half. Getting them to say ‘yes’ eight months to a year before your wedding is plenty time
Etiquette
Many to-be-weds ask ‘Do I have to ask someone who asked me?’ and the answer is a great big no! You could be in a completely different phase of your life to when you were involved in their wedding but whatever your

reasoning, do treat the situation with care, compassion and sensitivity – and expect that they might want to talk to you about it. Explain it’s a tough decision but be honest and let them know you had to go with those who you’re closest to at this point in your life. If you had to ‘leave out’ others too, perhaps reassure them with that info so they know they're not the only one.
Asking the big question
Decided on the definite line-up? Time to ask! Most brides use this as an excuse to celebrate (too right!) and line up a get-together and/or proposal gift. Go as simple or extra as you like; the only thing to remember is to do what feels right for you because all it’s really about is showing your loved ones how much you value them, isn’t it? ó

Bow-tiful Trends
Oh, bows! The stole they spotlight in 2023 and aren’t slowing down into 2024. It’s all about celebrating femininity and those girly touches that make us swoon. And honestly, what screams 'wedding' more than a gorgeous bow? Whether it’s a big, bold statement on the back of a dress or those cute, subtle accents on invitations, bows are here to tie your big day together (pun totally intended). ó

Ah, the splendour of weddings! The charm, the romance, the love in the air — there's nothing quite like it. And among the stars of this magical show are the radiant mothers of the newlyweds, shining with pride and joy. As they celebrate this special day, it’s important they also look their very best…
Whether it's an intimate wedding, a grand gala or a sophisticated soirée, there's an undeniable allure in donning the perfect outfit that exudes grace, sophistication, and of course, a sprinkle of your own unique style.
Once you've nailed down your showstopping outfit, let's take a peek at accessories that will truly make heads turn (without stealing the couple’s thunder, of course)! These are the unsung heroes of every outfit, as shown by the recent TikTok trend of wearing outfits vs styling them.

Fascinators and hats
A fascinator or hat can be the pièce de résistance of the entire outfit. It's a chance to let your personality shine and add an extra touch of elegance or whimsy. When choosing one, consider your facial structure, outfit colour and the overall theme of the wedding. Feathers, bows, flowers or even a hat/ fascinator/hatinator with a bit of playful flair can jazz up your look. Top tip: Opt for something that won't block the view of the guests behind you during the ceremony. After all, everyone wants to catch a glimpse of the happy couple!
Bags and shoes
While comfort is key, let's not forget about style – a small clutch or a chic handbag can be both functional and fashionable. Choose one that complements your outfit and has enough space for your essentials – that means lipstick, tissues (happy tears alert!) and maybe even a sneaky snack.
As for shoes, consider the venue. Wedges or block heels can be a lifesaver on grassy lawns while elegant pumps or sophisticated sandals are perfect for indoor affairs. Remember, always break those shoes in before the big day to avoid any last-minute limping!
Jewellery and brooches
A dash of sparkle here, a hint of glamour there… Jewellery is the magical wand that can take your look to new heights. Think delicate earrings that catch the light, a statement necklace that adds a touch of sophistication or a chic brooch that exudes timeless elegance. Layering accessories can create a personalised, multi-dimensional look that speaks volumes about your style. But remember, balance is key. Don't overwhelm your outfit, let your accessories complement it. ó
www.deesidephotographics.co.uk www.byrhea.co.uk www.byrhea.co.uk
As a guest, the goal is to look fabulous without outshining the main stars. To do this successfully, go for complimentary colours or chic patterns that resonate with the wedding theme (Hint: This can often be determined by looking at the invitation)! Midi dresses, jumpsuits and coordinated separates are excellent choices, coupled with statement jewellery or a stylish hat to top it off.
Remember, being comfortable is just as important as looking fantastic, so choose outfits that allow you to dance the night away without any restrictions. ó

Grooms Groomswear in 2024
Grooms, get set to impress this season. From the charm of textured fabrics and eco-friendly fashion statements to embracing cultural heritage and retro revivals, we've meticulously curated the top five trends.
GROOMSWEAR ó 43 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.deesidephotographics.co.uk
The latest trends for gents, or anyone who wishes to embrace groomswear styles on their big day, aren't just about making a style statement. They're about expressing your individuality and stepping into a new chapter of life with confidence and elegance. So, buckle up and let's explore…
Textured elegance
Forget the plain, smooth fabrics of yesteryears because 2024 is all about texture! Think suits with rich, tactile materials like tweed, herringbone or velvet and FYI, these ‘fits aren't just about looking good –they're about feeling the quality too. Perfect for adding a dash of personality and depth to your wedding attire, the key here is to choose textures that reflect you. If you're bold go for a heavier tweed. More understated? A light herringbone might be just the ticket. And
for the truly adventurous, why not mix and match textures? A velvet blazer over a tweed waistcoat can create a cool look that'll be totally unique to you.
Eco-chic
Sustainability is more than just a buzzword – it's a lifestyle, especially when it comes to your big day. Eco-friendly groomswear is in and that means suits made from organic materials, recycled fabrics and there are even vegan options too. Our fave so far is the cosy yet stylish organic wool suit but we’re in awe of those made from recycled plastic bottles too! P.S. It's not just suits – accessories are going green too. Look out for ties, cufflinks and even shoes made from planet-friendly materials. It's all about looking good while doing good!

Scots flair
Embrace your roots or simply nod to tradition with a traditional Scottish touch in your wedding outfit. This isn't just about kilts though, think tartan accents, tweed jackets or, of course, full Highland dress. It's a timeless look that pays homage to heritage and adds a unique, personal element to your wedding ensemble, depending on the pattern you opt for. Whether you're Scottish by blood or just in spirit (a nod to your other half’s heritage perhaps?) incorporating these elements can make your outfit truly stand out.
Peaky chic
This year, channel your inner Tommy Shelby with Peaky Blinders-inspired suits. A proper vintage trend, you’ll be bringing back the classic styles of the 1920s with a modern twist – think tailored waistcoats, crisp shirts and those signature baker boy caps. It’s a bold, statement look that screams confidence

and style. And it’s all about the detail so pocket watches, cufflinks and brogues can all add to the vintage vibe. Oh, don't forget the grooming too! A slicked-back hairstyle or a well-groomed beard will really complete your look.
Modern minimalist
It’s worth thinking about how you usually dress when considering your outfit for your wedding day and if you’re a firm believer that less is more (clean lines, slim fits and a simple colour palette), why not embrace understated elegance on one of the biggest days of your life? A sleek black or navy suit, a crisp white shirt and a subtle pop of colour in the tie or pocket square – this is perfect if you love a sophisticated, fuss-free look. Think quality over quantity here so choose a suit with a perfect fit and luxury fabric to the cut and the colour do the talking – and keep accessories to a minimum. A sleek watch or a pair of classic cufflinks are all you need to complete this elegant look.
Boho vibes
This year, groomswear's kicking off its shoes and embracing that laid-back, boho charm. We're talking suits that feel more like a second skin, think breezy linens and soft, earthy tones that scream beach wedding or garden nuptials. Why not swap that stiff blazer for a lightweight one that dances in the breeze or rock some cool, patterned trousers that say "I'm formal but I'm here to party too"? When it comes to accessories have fun with leather sandals, quirky boutonnieres or a pocket watch that's more vintage chic than old-school. You’ll be mixing comfort with a dash of flair, perfect for those ready to strut down the aisle with feels of fun, love, and a hint of bohemian rhapsody. ó

Ceilidh Meet-Cute
From meeting at a friend’s nuptials to saying ‘I do’ at bonny Banff Springs Hotel, Jade Park and Stuart Fraser’s love story culminated in a celebration that was uniquely them – relaxed, full of laughter and bursting with joy. Let’s find out more about their special day (and the days leading up to it) from the bride herself…
“It all began at a wedding ceilidh in 2016. Who knew that amidst the laughter and dancing I'd meet the man I'd marry? We still laugh about how none of us had a clue what we were doing on the dance floor that night! And it all ended with my future husband falling asleep on me on the bus home… A memory that always brings a smile to my face!
We gave ourselves three years to plan our own wedding, which felt like the perfect amount of time. It allowed us to save up comfortably and choose a date that landed on a Saturday. Honestly, the planning process was a breeze!
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Our priority was a stress-free and personal celebration that truly felt like us, and our chosen venue perfectly captured our vision. The moment we met Sarah Sinclair/Neesham at Banff Springs Hotel, she completely sold us on it. We incorporated a cosy rustic theme with fairy lights twinkling everywhere and baby blue accents (a nod to my favourite colour). We even included our two furry best friends as our flower girls!
Dress shopping was an experience I wasn't sure I'd enjoy. After having my little one, I felt self-conscious and thought I'd gravitate towards a more forgiving ballgown style. However, the lovely ladies at Blush Bridal completely changed my mind. Ultimately, I fell in love with a fitted dress that wasn't quite a mermaid style. The cappuccino colour was unique and modern, just what I was looking for. I accessorised with simple heels from New Look (the only ones I could walk in!) and added pearls to match my veil.
We spent the night before the wedding at the hotel in a dog-friendly room. It was a relaxed evening, enjoying a meal with most of the bridal party and a few drinks before getting some rest for the big day.
The following morning was filled with contrasting emotions. For me, it was all about excitement with a mini-breakfast buffet delivered to the room and a chilled atmosphere while getting ready. For the guys, it was apparently a bit more hectic, wrangling the dogs and our little one!
We opted for a short and sweet humanist ceremony that reflected our personalities. We exchanged heartfelt vows, listened to a poem read by my grandfather (which brought tears to everyone's eyes) and shared stories about our life together. We even incorporated a playful twist with a ‘shot to tie the knot’ after saying ’I do’.
We exited to a shower of bubbles and headed straight to Duff House for photos. While we captured memories, our guests enjoyed drinks and left hilarious messages in our audio guestbook, providing endless entertainment when we listened to them back.
The meal and speeches were up next. The food was absolutely delicious, the best I've ever had! And the speeches were fantastic, especially the best man's toast, which had everyone in stitches.
The evening continued with fantastic entertainment provided by DJ Paul T Mobile Disco. He played a great mix of tunes, including a few ceilidh dances to pay homage to our meet-cute. He interacted with the crowd the entire night, making sure everyone had a blast. The overall feel of the celebration was exactly what I had envisioned – laughter, love and good company.
Looking back, one of my favourite moments was seeing our surprise wedding cake by Lana Lou Cake Studio for the first time. It was absolutely stunning and reaffirmed the importance of trusting your suppliers. Alanna did an incredible job capturing our vision without any input from us.
Our biggest piece of advice to future couples is to plan your wedding your way. Do it for yourselves and each other and don't worry about pleasing anyone else.” ó

Jewellery Ring, Ring!
Gone are the days of traditional solitaire diamonds being the only option when it comes to engagement rings so it’s well worth doing your research before you start dropping not-tosubtle hints galore. Otherwise, how else will your other half know what to get down on one knee with!?
Whether you see yourself going for something simple and classic or favouring a grand, attention-grabbing masterpiece on that ring finger, there’s no harm in doing your homework in plenty of time. Consider every cut, colour and arrangement available out there so you know what ticks your boxes – or that of your partner if you’re the one who’ll be asking the big question.
You’ll want to take practicalities into account too because this beauty will be part of your daily look from now until forever. First up, you’ll want something you won’t go off – you need to be in love with this piece for the rest of your life! For some, that might mean keeping to a sensible, timeless choice… Classy gold
band, anyone? But for others it may be about going super-personal and having a ring designed especially for you – perhaps quite literally if you/your other half decide to go down the bespoke jewellery-making route.
Whether custom made or off-the-shelf, a ring shopper’s journey often starts by seeing what’s out there and taking note of trends. And yes, going back to what we say above about loving the style forever, trends do move on. But as many of you may notice with outfits from your teens coming back into fashion again (groan!), engagement rings are often just updated takes on classic designs. They’ve been tried and tested for years and simply modernised to become relevant today.

We’ve rounded up five of our faves, expected to peak in 2024…
1. Let your personalities shine through with toi et moi
After surging in popularity in 2023, this romantic design is expected to keep going this year. For those not in the know, a toi et moi engagement ring has two centre diamonds or gemstones that symbolise partnership and devotion. They meet on the finger, representing two souls coming together as one. The ‘you and me’ theme is packed with sentiment but not only that – it offers endless options to make a unique combination when it comes to stones, colours, cuts and carats. Perhaps start with choosing the shape that feels best suited to your relationship – is your love story a gently curving oval or more like the striking angles of a princess cut?
2. Be kind to the planet with your sparkler
Another to-be-wed preference that’s still going strong from last year is that of sustainability. Many couples now opt for lab-grown diamonds for their centre stones because they have an identical chemical composition to earth-mined diamonds but provide total reassurance that you’re doing good when it comes to your carbon footprint. Worried it won’t look like the real thing? Well, experts say it’s impossible to tell the difference without advanced technology and they defo stand the test of time – plus choosing a lab-grown stone means you get more bang for your buck. Think larger diamond, better clarity, colour and cut. What’s not to like?

3. Embrace creativity with asymmetry and art deco
For some couples, it’s essential their wedding is bursting with personality, reflecting their love story. And their jewellery is no different – people want unique rings that reflect who they are and this means more playful, unconventional designs. Choosing an asymmetrical ring where you can mix cuts and colours to create something just for you is one way to do this. The piece can still feel quite classic but the stone layout and sizing adds that spark of individuality. If that’s not for you though, vintage styles are back on the cool list with a modern twist. Think emerald cuts, radiant cuts, baguettes and other geometric shapes, as well as Georgian or Victorian setting styles that’ll add a retro vibe.
www.danirosephotography.com
4. Dazzle your bridal squad with a bright white band
Jewellery experts are predicting a real comeback of white gold and platinum engagement rings, as opposed to yellow gold. White gold is a mixture of pure yellow gold, other white metals and a rhodium plating, which gives it the brilliant white look. It works well to really offset white diamonds but coloured stones like aquamarine and sapphire also lend themselves well to the neutrality of white. Talking of which, pops of colour – another way of expressing your individuality – will be big this year too. Diamonds aren’t for everyone and green, yellow and teal hues are the preferred hues at the minute.
5. Go big or go home with your engagement ring
For some this year, minimalism is out and maximalism is in! That means bolder pieces that ooze character and really make a statement. After all, this is your engagement ring, why shouldn’t it make some noise!? Some ideas we love include large solitaire diamonds in playful settings, graphic designs with double halos and asymmetrical double bands. More is more in 2024! ó

FlowersFloral Forecast
If you’re planning a 2024 or 2025 wedding and looking for some top floral tips, you’ve come to the right place.
www.byrhea.co.uk 70 ó FLOWERS
Bloom & Wild, known for carbon neutral flowers and plants by post, has revealed what’s in store with a vision of floral enchantment that goes beyond the ordinary. Here’s what to come this season for wedding blooms…
1. Locally-sourced florals
For some time now, local blooms have been getting the love they deserve in the wedding scene and it looks like they'll be the go-to choice for 2024 nuptials. More couples than ever are valuing the eco-friendly element of homegrown petals, appreciating the chance to support nearby growers. ‘British flowers’ isn’t just a trendy phrase now – they’re becoming a significant and lasting part of the wedding industry.
2. Cyber lime and fondant pink
Pantone’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz, is a shade that’s been popular in bouquets for decades. But Bloom & Wild anticipates a new trend that’ll feature the contrasting hues of cyber lime and fondant pink. Here, you get the combination of delicate pastel pink flowers with accentuated lime-coloured foliage. Add a relaxed and airy arranging style and you’ll find there’s already a growing demand for this vibrant pairing.
3. Minimalist flower meadows
Recreating wild, unmanicured meadows brimming with a mix of flowers, grasses and foliage has been trending for a few years now and it’s a look set to evolve for 2024. The result? A setting that exudes both natural charm and sophistication, making it an ideal choice for couples seeking a minimalist yet impactful look for their florals. There’s a bonus too – this style keeps blooming long after the wedding, making it a great choice for couples tying the knot close to home.
4. AI in floral design
As AI has rapidly taken the spotlight in various industries, 2023 showed the wedding flower business is no exception. Promising a surge of creativity and innovation, AI is said to be helping florists discover fresh, awe-inspiring designs that consider trending combinations – or find new ones entirely. And it's expected to reduce waste by letting florists envision potential designs for couples without the need for physical stems. Get ready to witness what was once thought to be beyond the realm of imagination seamlessly transition into reality…! ó

Beauty regimes
Pre-wedding beauty routines need not be stressful; they can be a pampering experience! Skincare leading up to your big day is crucial but it doesn't have to mean a complex concoction of creams, tonics and serums. Regular cleansing, moisturising and exfoliating combined with plenty hydration can work wonders for that natural bridal glow. Treat yourself to a relaxing facial or indulge in a DIY spa day with your friends, complete with face masks and soothing cucumber eye treatments.
When it comes to makeup, the mantra is simple… Enhance, don’t mask. So, embrace your natural features while adding a touch of glam. Experiment with makeup looks beforehand to find the one that makes you feel like the most radiant version of yourself. Soft, romantic hues or bold lip colours —
the choice is yours! And don’t forget the importance of waterproof makeup for those happy tears!
Teeth talk
A radiant smile is an essential accessory for your wedding day. Why not schedule a dental check-up and professional cleaning to ensure your pearly whites are at their best? And if you want a brighter smile, consider teeth whitening. It's amazing how a confident, beaming smile can light up an entire celebration!
Nailing it
Nail care might seem minor but subtle details matter too! A classic nude or a soft pastel shade can complement your overall look without stealing the spotlight. Alternatively, opt for a unique design or accent nail that reflects your personality.

Scent-sational perfumes
As for fragrance, choose a scent that will linger in your memories long after the celebrations have ended because smells have a remarkable ability to evoke emotions and create lasting impressions. Find a scent that resonates with you and your partner; one that will remind you both of this joyous occasion whenever you catch its lingering aroma.
Rest and relaxation
Wedding planning can feel like a full-time job so don’t forget to take moments to relax and rejuvenate. Remember, choosing your beauty routine should be a source of joy and self-care rather than stress so embrace the process, have fun with it and involve your loved ones! Consider beauty trials with your bridal party, turning it into a bonding experience filled with laughter, stories and maybe even some bubbly. ó

82 ó REAL WEDDINGS
SoLove… This is
Phoebe Hendry and Cameron Tweedie’s love story began online, blossomed with a proposal in historic Leith Hall Garden and culminated in a magical November wedding at Glen Clova Hotel. Nestled amidst the breathtaking Scottish Highlands, their day was a beautiful blend of love, family and Scottish heritage, remembers the bride…
“We originally planned a two-year engagement but due to family circumstances, moved our wedding forward. While this meant a faster pace of planning, it thankfully didn't compromise our vision. Securing our dream venue, the Glen Clova Hotel with its secluded charm and breathtaking scenery, was our top priority. Clova Kirk, which was within walking distance, added a special touch as it held sentimental value for me.
I’d always envisioned a Scottish-inspired wedding with a touch of rustic charm and our décor choices reflected that. Our colour scheme embraced rich shades of dark green and burnt orange, perfectly capturing the essence of autumn. Fairy lights and candles added a touch of warmth, while a Christmas tree further complemented the wintery ambiance. We wanted the ceremony to be a beautiful blend of Scottish traditions and personal touches, and it was!
Finding my perfect dress on the first try was quite unexpected. At the first shop I visited, the sparkling, A-line gown with a sweetheart neckline made me feel instantly confident and special, and it fit seamlessly with our winter wedding theme. My bridesmaids, including my sister Catherine, looked stunning in elegant off-the-shoulder velvet dresses in shades of forest green. And Cameron, along with his groomsmen, wore kilts in the Weathered Campbell of Argyll tartan, reflecting the autumnal vibe beautifully.
The night before the wedding, our close family gathered for a pre-wedding dinner, allowing everyone who hadn't met before to mingle. It was a heartwarming evening filled with laughter and anticipation. Then we all set up the venue, had a rehearsal and chilled with some prosecco and face masks.
The following morning was surprisingly calm, despite the butterflies in my stomach! Our amazing wedding suppliers kept everyone relaxed and excited. Having already completed makeup and hair trials, I knew the girls well and their positive energy created a fun atmosphere.
Our ceremony was small and intimate with just 55 guests. We added several special touches that made it incredibly meaningful. The hand-tying and the act of drinking from the quaich, which was presented by Cameron's father, were deeply rooted in Scottish tradition. Cameron lit a remembrance candle for loved ones who couldn't be with us and our mothers lit a unity candle together, symbolising the joining of our families. To top it all off, my mother read a beautiful poem written by my grandmother, adding a heartfelt touch of family heritage.
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
The celebrations began with nibbles (veggie haggis bon bons, Mediterranean tartlets and caprese skewers), beautiful piano music and quirky performances by the Silver City Singers Quartet (of which my father is a proud member).
After the meal and speeches it was time to party! The band, Franco, kept the dance floor lively with a mix of popular songs and traditional ceilidh tunes. Guests enjoyed stovies, cake and homemade fudge throughout the evening.
Our wedding was a perfect encapsulation of our love story – warm, intimate and full of laughter. We’d definitely encourage couples to embrace off-season weddings. Our date meant we got the venue and all the suppliers we really wanted – and the beauty of the winter landscape enhanced our special day.
We’d also emphasise the importance of connecting with vendors on a personal level, especially the photographer and videographer who document your entire journey. Cameron and I loved our couple

TANYA & BLAIR
Our Schivas Wedding
Blair and I were engaged on 2nd January 2021. Right in the throws of the latest lockdown at that time. I immediately started looking for our perfect wedding venue. Looking online, I came across Schivas Steading. A brand new wedding venue that was still under construction.
Although, it was essentially a building site, with scaffolding and the floors unfinished. It was so easy to envisage it complete. We loved it, and between the modern Steading and the older Schivas House, the stunning gardens and surroundings, the whole estate was the perfect mix of new and old, modern and traditional.
We planned to get married in the walled garden at Schivas House, have our drinks reception then head up to the Steading for dinner and dancing. The best of the full estate. However, the weather on 6th May 2023 had other ideas. Being a Scottish wedding, we accepted that our plans had to change. Our celebrations would be at the Steading.
Tracy and Edward were on hand to deliver the wedding that the weather was going to allow us. Contingency planning at its best! The morning of the wedding was so fun as we got ready at Newton House, across the courtyard from the Steading. Blair and his groomsmen stayed at West Lodge on the estate the evening before, and judging by the photos, they were also having a great time ahead of the wedding.
Now we were all suitably glammed and I was in my wedding dress…the most surreal moment, after two years of planning, the many dress alterations appointments, the time had finally come. It was happening! Wow!! Walking down to aisle to meet Blair was incredible, I really tried my best to be in the moment, take it all in and enjoy it. It was such a special moment with my dad, a moment just for us as we headed down to
Blair. The video footage shows just how proud my dad was and how delighted he was to be ‘giving me away’ to Blair.
Our ceremony was gorgeous and so personal to us. Jac Ruddy married us and Blair’s daughter, Rachael, gave a lovely and funny speech about how love is like owning a dog. We were now married, and it was time to party. Blair and I with our bridal party were whisked away for our photographs. It’s such a conflicting time we felt. After the wedding is over, the photos and footage is all you have left from the day and I adore looking back on them. However, in the moment, you just want to have fun with your friends and family. It is worth it though because the photos and footage are stunning.
My favourite part of the day was during the speeches and the meal. Mostly because we could just sit back, enjoy it and take everything in! My dad, husband, best man and chief bridesmaid, Lynsey, all delivered speeches. Lynsey gave a speech because why should it just be men that give speeches at weddings, right?! After the meal, it was time to party the night away! It was the most fun atmosphere, our band played the perfect mix of wedding songs and a DJ set for the last hour. We also surprised our guests with an Ibiza style saxophone set. Overall, for me as a bride, the day passed in a flash. I really wish I could have slowed down time.
We had a dream team of suppliers but our day really ran like clockwork because Tracy and her team at Schivas were always 5 steps ahead. She is fantastic and is such a natural in her role at Schivas. I have no doubt that Schivas, still a relatively new venue, will continue to grow and get better and better with every wedding season. I will always be a Schivas ambassador, with nothing but good thoughts and feedback should anyone dare to ask…as I will go on and on.

Exclusive use
Did you know that here in the Northeast you have access to have some very special hidden gem buildings offering exclusive use for wedding celebrations? Most are set in beautiful surroundings and come with delicious foodie offerings, as well as a topnotch team to guide you through the planning journey. They may even have accommodation on-site too, which is ideal for pre-wedding prep and can double up as a post-celebration hideaway for the newlyweds. There may even be space to host your nearest and dearest too.
Glen Tanar, nestled in Royal Deeside, has seven luxury cottages for example – as well as its very own chapel (the very pretty Chapel of St Lesmo) and an elegant ballroom where guests have the option to spill out onto the expansive lawns.
Also perfect for outdoor entertaining, The Shivas Steading offers an exclusive use space in Methlick. Inside, you’ll find a striking two-storey venue where wedding dreams can come true for you and up to 200 guests. Did we mention the hot tubs included in the on-site accommodation?!

Marquees
If you’re dreaming of taking advantage of the fact you can say ‘I do’ almost anywhere in Scotland, you might want to look into hiring a marquee to host your wedding breakfast and dance the night away in. Whether you’re thinking of tying the knot at home in sprawling gardens or on fabulous farmland, or marrying at a hidden gem beauty spot full of magical memories, a marquee is a superflexible option. As well as tailoring it to your location, you’ll find it can be customised in terms of shape, colour and size – and actually, the only limit is your imagination (and a few practical factors like budget and timing)!
On that note, your marquee provider will help you plan anything you need support with but especially layout and dimensions. In fact, some (like Aberdeen’s Esslemont Marquees) will give you a scale diagram of how it’ll look on the day to make sure you get the best use of the space. How nice!

For couples who love to get creative, a marquee is a total blank canvas, which means you can choose your décor, suppliers… Pretty much anything! Whilst some traditional wedding venues may have preferred supplier lists, hosting your big day here means that every decision is yours without restriction.
Restaurants
Don’t overlook your fave eatery as a potential wedding venue – even if they aren’t known for hosting nuptials, why not approach them about the possibility of using their premises for your big day? And if you’re a well-known regular, you’ve got a good chance! But if it’s a no, bear in mind that they may be able to offer catering only if you can source an alternative venue – this means you still get the cuisine that enticed you in the first place.
If you’re having a wee wedding, large restaurants will most likely have a glorious private dining room for hire. But if it’s a bigger celebration you might strike lucky and they’ll close the entire establishment for you and your guests. The Cowshed, for example, is a beautiful Aberdeenshire restaurant that offers exclusive use – with views to die for over the surrounding countryside. With stylish modern décor, mouth-watering Scottish produce prepared by a team of award-winning chefs and plenty parking, what’s not to like? ó

So, you've decided to make your wedding day a grand affair amidst the rolling hills and charming castles of Northeast Scotland? Great choice! Get ready for a journey filled with tartan, bagpipes and a sprinkle of magic as we guide you through planning your oh-sofabulous castle (or grand stately home) wedding.
Finding your fairytale castle
First things first, let's talk venue options. With options like the fairytale enchantment of Fyvie Castle or the timeless elegance of Ellon-based stately home Haddo House, you're spoiled for choice. Start the process by exploring the rich history and architectural features of your potential venues. Visit them, take it all in and your hearts guide your decision!
Consider your guest list
Before signing any contracts or getting too caught up in the daydreams, make sure the venue can comfortably accommodate your guest list. Some castles are more intimate, while some grand accommodations could host a royal bash. Picture your nearest and dearest in the space – does it fit the vibe you're going for? Perfect! Now, onto the next checklist item.

Ceremony spaces fit for royalty
Your ceremony is the heart of the celebration, so ensure the venue offers a setting that resonates with your vision. Whether it's a courtyard, a grand hall or a charming garden, envision yourselves saying your vows in that space. Remember, it's not just about the castle exterior; it's about the magical nooks within.

Let's talk logistics
Now let's get practical. Discuss logistics with the venue coordinators, and consider accessibility for your guests, available parking (is there space for a bus to turn if you’re having one?) and the overall flow of the day. Be sure to ask about any restrictions or guidelines – you wouldn't want your dream release of a thousand doves or fancy fireworks to be a logistical nightmare!
Wedding packages and amenities
Castle/stately home weddings can be as grand as a royal ball or as intimate as a fireside gathering. Enquire about packages –do they include catering, floral arrangements or a dedicated coordinator? Some offer all-inclusive deals, while others pride themselves on flexibility. Find the fit for you and your budget.

Weather-proof planning
Let's not forget the ever-changing Scottish weather! Ask about contingency plans for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. Does the venue offer indoor alternatives? A flexible venue that can adapt to sun or drizzle is a true gem.
Get the scoop from reviews
Before you pop the champagne, do a little online detective work. Read feedback from other couples who tied the knot in your prospective place. Their experiences can offer valuable insights into the venue's service, responsiveness and flag up any unexpected surprises – good or bad.
Choosing the perfect castle or stately home is an adventure in itself. So, take your time, ask questions and envision the magic that will unfold within those historic walls. ó

Before we spill the tea on hotel weddings, let's acknowledge that they come in all different shapes and sizes. A small local hotel and a grand estate are two different beasts, offering distinct feels and vibes. So, as we explore the pros and the cons, keep in mind that not every venue is cut from the same cloth.
The wins for hosting your wedding in a hotel
1. A hotel can be a very diverse space, bundling up ceremony spaces, reception halls, accommodation and catering all under one roof. It's a one-stop-shop for wedding planning, making your life easier and reducing the vendor hustle.
2. Food and drink are wedding essentials, and hotels usually have that covered inhouse. They may offer set menus or even create a bespoke culinary experience just for you. From traditional Scottish feasts to experimental cuisine, the options are endless.

3. Say hello to your wedding superhero – the hotel's wedding coordinator! The presence of a dedicated wedding planner is a significant advantage. These professionals excel in navigating the complexities of event planning within the hotel setting, ensuring a seamless and well-coordinated celebration. They're like fairy godparents, making sure your day goes off without a hitch.
4. Who needs to rush off after the last dance? Block off some rooms and your guests can turn your wedding into a weekend getaway. It's like hosting a wedding slumber party – no need for back-and-forth travel on the big day. And you may even save some pennies if you let them know the rooms are for wedding guests!

5. Beyond the wedding essentials, hotels come with added perks – think spa facilities, recreational activities and diverse dining options. It's like a wedding weekend and vacation rolled into one. 6. Rain on your wedding day? No problemo! Hotels often have a Plan B (and sometimes C) for unpredictable weather with both indoor and outdoor spaces. This flexibility ensures that your wedding can weather any storm – literally and figuratively. The larger the hotel, the more options at your fingertips.

Let's debunk some of the common misconceptions about hotels
1. Some assume that choosing a hotel for your wedding may lead to a cookie-cutter conundrum, where larger hotels might feel too generic. But, hey, it depends on the hotel's style, and many can accommodate unique and charming setups. So, if you're dreaming of a hotel wedding that stands out from the rest, be sure to check if they're cool with your creative touches.
2. While shared spaces may have rules like noise restrictions and set closing times, some think this automatically hinders an allnight bash. Contrary to this misconception, cosy late-night hotel bars might be the key to an all-night fiesta without compromising on style.

3. The convenience of a hotel may be perceived as pricey. However, it's important to run the numbers and not assume that a hotel will strain your budget. In fact, it can often be the opposite when you consider the wealth of things you get thrown in with a package deal, from stationery to toast drinks.
4. You may believe that hotels are only found in urban areas. But surprise, surprise! Many hotels are nestled in charming countryside spots with expansive outdoor areas. So, before you overlook hotels as a venue option, explore beyond city limits. You might be pleasantly surprised to find hotels ready to fulfil your al fresco dreams. Just remember to have a wet-weather plan handy – because you just never know what you’ll get with the Scottish elements!

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR TO SAY ‘I DO’
A wedding at Maryculter House is always magical. However, there’s something truly enchanting about getting married on the banks of the River Dee surrounded by frosty trees and twinkling lights.

5. Some believe that hotels won't provide the desired privacy they’re looking for, as other guests might share the space. But fear not! Many hotels offer a simple solution: full buyouts. It's like having your own exclusive VIP section – privacy guaranteed! Say goodbye to the misconception of crowded spaces and hello to separate entrances, exclusive vibes and your personal slice of paradise. And here's the cherry on top – many hotels commit to hosting just one wedding a day, ensuring that your special celebration shines without any unwanted company. So, wave goodbye to gatecrashers and welcome your very own private celebration.
6. There's a rumour that hotels with allinclusive wedding packages limit choices and creative freedom but that’s not the case at all. Northeast hotels appreciate that couples want to personalise their big day and will always do their best to tailor their offering to suit any couple's preferences and desires.

An Enhanced
Elopement
When Murray Aitken proposed to Lila Cruickshank, most family and friends would have dubbed them ‘an elopement couple’ and, actually, they pretty much were – just with an extra few VIPs. Here, Lila takes a break from her job of wedding planning at beautiful Logie Country House to talk us through how they said ‘I do’ on Friday 13th October 2023 after just six months of organising.
"We always knew a big wedding wasn't for us. I don’t like the limelight or fuss but lockdown confirmed it. We had six months of restricted weddings at Logie and although the conversations with couples were bleak (they couldn't have the guest lists they thought they wanted) each one was so, so special and more memorable in its own way with just the nearest and dearest present. That was it – we were sold, keen to break the mould and not the bank with a personal micro-wedding. We had eight guests at our ceremony at The Hermitage and meal at Fonab Castle then a further fifteen joined us at night for The Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry, which was where we had our first ever date.
Although we weren’t marrying in Aberdeen I knew I’d be ‘dragging along’ plenty of those I know from doing weddings for a living as we’re truly spoilt with our supplier family locally. Photos were important for us, and during a rather drunken celebration six months prior to our date at Logie for owners Tim and Stef, I put our date in Michael Carver’s diary. He followed up the morning after and we were all more than happy to proceed… A true indication of how complacent we were with our own wedding plans! Securing our venue just six months before the big day narrowed down our other options and I was able to secure my hairdresser by chance through a cancellation. And our celebrant was a given – I've worked with Neil Mellis so much we joke he's part of the furniture at work. The rest all fell into place rather seamlessly and we went for a whimsical, autumnal theme.
Both our mums were florists and Murray’s mum is sadly no longer with us so we used her dry flower stash to adorn the gents’ suits. My mum did the rest of the décor (I’d never have had anyone else!) and Murray, having inherited the creative gene, spent time making lots of personalised details, like our resin-topped signing table.
Painfully awkward and self-conscious, I knew I wasn’t going to enjoy dress shopping. But when the lovely Linda at Elmar Bridal Collection shared a black gown with pockets on her socials, I knew I had to try it. Sadly, it wasn’t right for me and I ended up taking a huge gamble with a boho dress that had been doing the rounds on TikTok. It arrived from Chicago just weeks before our date and I loved it – phew! I’m a trainer gal so when Vans released a wildflower white trainer, there was no question as to what I’d have on my feet. Then I approached Claire (the bridal jewellery queen at RedRocks) to make some custom hairpieces that would match my bouquet.
For Murray, I’d stipulated no kilts, having seen them worn haphazardly one too many times at work! So, a few trips to Hugo Boss and he was sorted with a very dapper velvet suit. My six-yearold daughter, Éabha, was our flower girl and we joked that I was the third wheel; happy to attend Murray and Éabha’s wedding! It was probably more of a big deal to Eabha than I most days and she wasn’t just flower girl, she was also lead
planner and head decorator. We chose to get married at 2.30pm to have more time in the morning and include a first look with our photographer (our only chance for daylight images at the castle given the time of year). Our humanist ceremony included drinking from the quaich – a quaich Murray’s mum won for Best Stand at Banchory Show 2003, which we'd filled with Thistly Cross cider, the first drink on our first date in Pitlochry in 2019.
Afterwards we got a few photos at The Hermitage then headed to Fonab where a champagne tower awaited. Having worked in hospitality from a teen, I knew we needed somewhere with impeccable food and service, and Fonab’s private whisky room didn’t let us down. We’d dressed it on-theme, drinks were flowing and the food was amazing. Our relaxed approach all came together here and we were so well-looked after.
We opted out of speeches and a first dance, heading straight to The Enchanted Forest for an evening reception that was ‘unapologetically us’. Our wedding was different, alternative and nontraditional, and its uniqueness was our highlight. I’d say to others to be selfish because it’s your day. Do it your way and never put yourself in a position where you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable.” ó

As couples twirl onto the dance floor and champagne glasses clink in celebration, Encore Musicians, the UK’s go-to platform for musical bookings, has delved into the rhythms and beats that echoed through weddings in 2023, unveiling some surprising preferences and popular tunes.
Just picture it – twinkling fairy lights, the gentle evening breeze and a couple swaying to the heartfelt serenade of Perfect by Ed Sheeran. It’s the quintessential first dance, and it captured the hearts of 16.3% of couples in 2023. Yet, amidst its charm, one in seven guests turned a deaf ear to its crooning notes, proving that even a perfect tune can't win every heart.

Surprisingly (or perhaps not?) Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On found itself adrift in the sea of least favourite wedding songs with a quarter of guests steering clear of its sentimental lyrics. Perhaps it's the haunting memories of Jack and Rose's tragic love story that make this classic a less-thandesirable choice for celebrating couples…!
Elvis Presley's velvety tones serenaded their way into the hearts of one in six people and he claimed the crown of the UK’s favourite wedding song with Can't Help Falling in Love. Stevie Wonder's soulful melody Isn't She Lovely followed suit, capturing one in eight votes as a beloved choice for wedding playlists.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers – a floorfilling fave at Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire weddings – seems to tread a fine line between love and indifference in the hearts of wedding crowds. While 6% tap their feet along to the

Digging deeper into the playlists, Encore Musicians' exploration of more than 2,300 song requests by newlyweds revealed some seriously interesting stuff. Ed Sheeran maintained his throne with 21.7% of mentions. Meanwhile, Queen's anthems claimed 21.3%, likely due to their timeless, upbeat classics that never fail to bring people to their feet. In the survey of 1,000 wedding attendees and musicians, familiar classics like I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers and Love Story by Taylor Swift took an unexpected twist, finding themselves among the less favoured tunes…Bet you weren’t expecting that!

could still get one of the Northeast’s talented stationers to create a design that can go on the web. Decor-wise, consider eco-friendly options like biodegradable confetti and decorations that minimise environmental impact without sacrificing style. Then embrace local flora for your bouquets and centrepieces to reduce the carbon emissions associated with transporting exotic blooms.
Caring catering
Food and drink can also reflect your commitment to the planet. Curate a menu featuring local, seasonal ingredients that not only taste better but also support nearby agriculture. For drinks, local breweries and distilleries can provide a taste of the region while keeping you green.

Making memories
Beyond the physical elements, think about how you can create lasting memories in sustainable ways. Instead of traditional favours, why not make a charitable donation in your guests' names to a local cause? Alternatively, provide small, potted plants or seed packets that guests can take home and nurture, serving as a living reminder of your special day.
Creative backgrounds
Explore the world of enchanting canopies and arbors for an ethereal ceremony backdrop. Picture a framework woven with locally sourced greenery and twinkling, energyefficient LED lights, creating a magical space to exchange vows. This not only adds a fairytale touch – it also incorporates natural elements in a planet-friendly way. As the sun sets, the soft glow of the lights will cast a romantic ambiance. Plus, these structures
can be repurposed or donated after the festivities, ensuring they continue to bring joy beyond your special day.
Interactive installations
Why not elevate your wedding look with interactive installations that double as entertainment? Think live painting sessions where an artist captures the essence of your day on canvas, offering a unique and engaging spectacle for your guests. Or set up a DIY flower crown station, where guests can craft their own eco-friendly headpieces using local flowers and biodegradable materials. These creative corners not only serve as fun activities but also allow your guests to take home a piece of the celebration, further reducing waste and enhancing the overall experience of your big day. ó

Food and Drink
Catering Must-haves
Creating the content of your wedding menu can be determined by the style, mood and theme of your celebration, as well as your budget or the season. Whatever route you go down, though, there are some important things to remember…
Check the final date you need to confirm numbers
When you’re gathering quotes and selecting your food/drink provider, you’ll have to give a rough idea of numbers but, down the line, they’ll need an exact figure so they can plan for ingredients, staff, etc. Find out this date as soon as you can and if you’ve decided to ask for menu choices on their RSVPs, set the deadline for much earlier… You just know there’ll be those inevitable late responses!
Ask for dietary requirements well ahead of time
Even if you have an intimate wedding, its likely at least one guest will have a specific dietary
requirement when it comes to the food and/ or drink on offer. Whether your guest(s) have chosen to be vegan or gluten-free, or have a serious nut allergy, it’s important to take these factors into account. Fortunately, Northeast caterers are dab-hands at this and many will already have diet-conscious options as part of their offering.
Make sure to organise a tasting session before the big day
This is the best bit! Many caterers will offer this as standard and usually it’s just for the couple – but it’s worth asking about adding additional diners if this is your preference. ó

Cakes
Sweet Inspirations
Who says wedding cakes have to be traditional? This issue, we’re serving up a trio of unique cake ideas that are all about personality, sustainability and a dash of the unexpected.
www.byrhea.co.uk 156 ó CAKES
From eco-friendly creations to adventurous flavour pairings and stunning garden-inspired designs, these cake trends are perfect for couples looking to add a slice of originality to their nuptials… Grab a fork and read on!
Eco elegance
This trend is a dream come true for planetloving couples. We’re talking cakes crafted with organic, locally sourced ingredients, topped with edible flowers or fruit, and decorated with biodegradable or reusable adornments. With one of these you’ll be celebrating the beauty of nature in every bite, combining rustic charm with chic simplicity. They're not just desserts; they’re a statement of your commitment to sustainability.
Flavour fusion
How do you fancy a cake that’s all about the unexpected; a culinary surprise that'll make your taste buds dance? That means a creation that’ll challenge the norm and offer a sensory experience like no other. Imagine cutting into a cake and finding a burst of
chilli heat mingling with rich chocolate, or the refreshing tang of citrus playing off sweet basil! Or how about a lavender and earl grey infused cake? Or a daring combination of salted caramel and whisky? These unique masterpieces are for couples who want to make a bold, memorable statement with their wedding menu.
Garden glamour
Bringing the beauty of the outdoors in, gardenstyle cakes are a visual and gastronomic delight. Envision tiers adorned with intricate sugar flowers, vines of buttercream and even real blooms that mirror your bouquet or table centrepieces. From subtle pastel hues to vibrant bursts of colour, they can be tailored to fit any garden or botanical theme. For beautiful romantic vibes, opt for cascading tiers of roses, peonies, and daisies. And for something more subtle, ask your cake designer to simply incorporate lots of greenery and berries. Special and whimsical, this choice will enchant your guests for sure. ó

or pulling up in a sleek Tesla that whispers luxury without bothering the environment. It's all about leaving a smaller carbon footprint while making a big statement.
Group gallop
For a real twist, why not ditch the traditional car and go for something that'll get everyone talking? A horse-drawn carriage isn't just for fairytales, it's a charming way to make your entrance or exit truly memorable. Or for a more communal vibe, a vintage bus could ferry your whole party in style, turning the journey into part of the celebration.
Sneaker strut
Who says you need wheels at all? If your venue’s a hop, skip, and a jump away or you’re staying on-site, lead your guests in a joyful procession on foot. Deck yourselves out in comfy sneakers (customised to match your wedding theme, of course) and turn the walk into a mini-parade, complete with music and laughter. It's the perfect way to kick off the festivities with energy and a touch of whimsy. ó

Ceremonies Unplugged ‘I Do’s
Say goodbye to buzzing phones and hello to heart-to-heart connections by exploring the personal and romantic trend of unplugged ceremonies. Think less scrolling, more smiling and less posting, more toasting…
www.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
www.aboynephotographics.com
An unplugged ceremony is all about the real feels with zero digital distractions. That means your favourite people with eyes not on screens but on you, getting misty as you say your vows. Here’s how it’s done…
1. Let your guests know your plan
Spread the word with a touch of fun, jazzing up your invites with a playful note about going phone-free during the ceremony, emphasising that the pivotal moments will be snapped and shared by the official photographers.
2. Remind everyone on the day
At your venue, let quirky signs do the talking. How about: "Drop the tech, feel the love!" And just before the magic happens, have your officiant give a gentle nudge, reminding guests to keep their "phones off and hearts open." It's about creating a cosy bubble of love and laughter, ensuring everyone’s attention is on what’s happening, creating memories that’ll be held in hearts, not on handheld devices.
www.aboynephotographics.com
It was an absolutely amazing day. Our ceremony was wonderful. Registrars do such a fantastic job and really helped keep it romantic and traditional but also a little bit silly and funny! We had so many compliments on it, especially the Scottish elements. Thank you so, so much for your wonderful help - it was utterly perfect!
Josh and Alex
rom historic venues with the beautiful Aberdeenshire landscape as your backdrop to cozy gatherings close to home, our friendly team can help you shape an unforgettable and unique ceremony.
As Aberdeenshire registrars, we pride ourselves on helping you plan your perfect ceremony, making it unforgettable and unique – these two words are the very things we think of as we work with you to create a ceremony which is personal, memorable and full of love. Whether you are considering a traditional venue or something more unusual, our modern registrar ceremonies can help you to make it happen. The perfect start for you is to contact us to discuss your hopes and ideas. We will provide advice, listen to your thoughts and get to know you as a couple.
Over the years, we’ve conducted ceremonies in many beautiful venues and stunning locations throughout Aberdeenshire. Wherever you decide to have your wedding or civil partnership and however you would like it conducted, we will be with you every step of the way.
To start your journey with us, simply call the team on 01467 468468 or email marriageandcivilpartnership@ aberdeenshire.gov.uk
You can also visit our website at https://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/ registrars/marriage-and-civil-partnership/
You can also look out for us a local wedding fairs throughout the year.
One of our happy couples, Josh and Alex, chose stunning Fyvie Castle as the venue for their wedding recently.
Alex said: “Everyone we encountered was happy and excited for us. The marriage booklet was incredibly useful – it highlighted exactly how customisable a registrar-led ceremony could be and was an excellent resource for us during our initial planning.
“We really enjoyed our meeting to discuss the ceremony beforehand. Running through it with Jacquilyn who was to be our registrar on the day definitely put our minds at ease and we appreciated the little tweaks that she made to the structure and how she talked us through what would actually happen on the day.”
“We got off the call confident that it was going to be a fantastic ceremony and it ended up being even better than we’d imagined. It was wonderfully personal and the fact we had a couple of giggles throughout is just the cherry on the cake! A perfect start to a perfect day.”

3. Get creative and provide a phone parking lot
If you’re taking it super-seriously, set up a cool spot for guests to leave their phones during the ceremony. Deck it out with some on-theme décor – think phone valet but make it fancy so it’s not just a drop-off; it’s a part of the wedding adventure… And a great opportunity to capture a cute photo for the ‘gram!
4. Offer an alternative way to get involved
Now that you have everyone’s attention, how about adding some extra fun? Fancy kicking things off with a group vow; all your guests pledging their cheer and support, turning the air electric with good vibes? Alternatively, ask the person conducting your ceremony about ring-warming. Your rings will be passed around the group, letting each person touch them and make a wish for you. It's like a lovefilled game of pass-the-parcel!
www.eastsidephotography.co.uk
5. Get them snapping you old school
A blast from the past and a fab way to let guests do their bit without screens, why not hand out some retro disposable cameras for after the knot is tied – could they capture the confetti shots? Not just fun for the ceremony, keep these available throughout the day and look forward to the quirky candid shots afterwards. ó

Love Melody of
Picture this: the sun peeking past the Scottish clouds, a gentle breeze rustling through the trees and love in the air. Beautiful, isn’t it?
That’s the scene that painted the backdrop to the most special day in Bethany Reid and Luke Radford’s lives — their wedding at Maryculter House Hotel. Bethany tells us more…
“Luke and I crossed paths in college back in 2014, music being the shared thread that connected us – he played the saxophone and I sang. What started as friendship blossomed into something deeper by 2017 then in 2021, on a magical Christmas day, Luke took my breath away by proposing with a song he'd written just for me! It was called Marry Me.
The planning process was a whirlwind, but a beautiful one. We gave ourselves just under two years to organise everything as we wanted to cherish every moment and ensure our loved ones could join us. Maryculter House Hotel felt like fate when we stumbled upon it. It was cosy inside with an outdoor space that was perfect for our nature-loving families. It really was like a dream come true.
REAL WEDDINGS ó 173 www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
We went for a wooden rustic vibe with lots of foliage, and touches of green and gold. Illumin8 and Without a Hitch turned our vision into reality, blending everything seamlessly with the venue. And the weather on the day somehow made it all the more magical – it felt like nature was celebrating with us.
Armed with a Pinterest board full of inspo I had a clear image of what I wanted my dress to look like and I found ‘The One’ after trying just four! It had a deep plunge and was a strappy gown with a flowing train adorned with delicate embroidery. It paired perfectly with my ivory leather platform Converse, which were both practical and perfect. The girls at Midnight Elegance were absolutely amazing. They made my family and I feel so at ease and with just a few questions they were able to help me find the dress of my dreams.
Luke wore a kilt passed down from his grandpa in the Murray tartan. He looked dashing and the accessories (like the plaid made by his grandma's friend Moira and a 300-year-old pocket watch passed down through the generations) added sentimental touches that made it even more special.
The ceremony, which took place outside and was officiated by Gary Smith, was a beautiful reflection of our journey. We were surrounded by family and friends, sipped from the quaich then had a handfasting ceremony with a blend of our tartans – a memory we now proudly display at home.
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
After the ceremony there was lots of laughter, hugs and canapés before we excused ourselves to get some stunning snapshots with our wonderful photographer. Then it was time to eat. The meal was exceptional and the speeches, especially Luke's, left everyone feeling moved. After dinner we took to the floor for our first dance to She's the One by Robbie Williams, surrounded by our loved ones. It was like a moment frozen in time; one we’ll cherish forever.
The Elaine Stewart Band had everyone on their feet, dancing the night away. The celebrations felt warm and fuzzy, the room was filled with love and we couldn’t have been happier. We were so grateful to the team at Maryculter House Hotel for making it so special, especially Kelsey who was the guardian angel in our wedding journey.
Our advice to couples organising their big day would be this to take your time, make it your own and steal moments with your partner amidst the hustle and bustle of the planning process.
Our mini-moon in Tenerife, gifted by our families, was the perfect way to unwind after the celebrations. A week in the sun, soaking in the joy of being newlyweds. Bliss!" ó

Why invest in preserving these memories? Because it's not just about boasting beautiful photos on social media (although, let's be honest, you'll totally want to)! Wedding photography and videography is the art of storytelling; about capturing all the cherished moments of your special day and creating a timeless keepsake for you, your kids and even your grandchildren.
While flowers wilt, cakes get eaten, and invitations find their way to the bin, wedding snaps live on. It's an investment in memories that will outlast the day itself. Your photographer(s) captures not just the visible details but the raw emotions, the fleeting glances, the laughter and the tears.
As you plan your budget, consider the lasting value of wedding photography. Guests might not notice slight savings on flowers or a smaller cake, but they will undoubtedly spot the absence of stunning wedding photos. So, maximise your budget for photography – it's the only tangible memory you'll have once the celebration is over.

Finding the perfect photographer
This doesn't have to feel like navigating a maze. Look for professionals whose style resonate with your vision. Do their portfolios brim with images that spark joy and inspire you? Do they seem like kindred spirits, ready to capture the quirky humour and joyful chaos that make your relationship unique?
And remember, it's about more than just the cost or added perks. Choose one (or a few) whose style you love and check them out. View their complete albums, ensure consistency and, if they’re the one, book quickly as the best photographers get snagged up fast.
There will already be plenty of people telling you what to do when it comes to picking a photographer/videographer but what about what not to do? Here are some top tips on what to avoid when it comes to making your choice:

Choosing based on price alone: Don't be swayed by extra perks. Focus on the photographer's style and your connection with them.
Settling for convenience: Your wedding photographer should be someone you connect with. Take the time to find the perfect match for your style and personality.
Being swayed by a few stunning shots: Consistency matters so make sure the photographer can tell a complete story through their work, not just a few standout images.
Relying on just venue recommendations: Explore options beyond your venue's list. It’s a great place to start but remember that your perfect match might not be on their radar.
Trusting in an amateur: A good camera doesn't make a photographer, no matter what your mate says! Invest in a professional who can navigate the dynamic nature of a wedding day.

Preserving those memories forever
Now that you’ve chosen the perfect photographer and you’re set to have the best day of your life, how do you ensure these amazing snaps stand the test of time? Never fear, from classic elegance to innovative solutions, you have plenty of options:
Go traditional with physical photo albums that allow you to easily flip through your memories. Choose high quality prints that will withstand the years, destined to become heirloom pieces passed down through generations.
If you’re still on the fence about a videographer then maybe this will sway you… Opt for a cinematic compilation set to music, capturing the essence of your day in motion. Imagine snuggling up on your anniversary, reliving the emotions and the excitement through this moving masterpiece.
Choose to make your keepsakes digital. Go for an online gallery or cloud storage for convenient sharing and future access. Back up your digital files for ultimate peace of mind, ensuring your digital love story is safe and sound for years to come.
The importance of allocating budget for a videographer
While photos beautifully capture the stills of your day, a wedding video adds another dynamic layer, allowing you to relive the emotions, laughter and tears. The sound of your vows, the cheers of your guests and the music of your first dance become living memories that a photograph alone can't convey.

In an era of global connections, not everyone can be physically present at your wedding to experience those moments. So, a wedding video can also become a touching method to share your special day with those who couldn't attend. It's a way to include friends and family who may be miles away, ensuring they feel a part of your celebration.
Some of the most precious times in our lives happen behind the scenes or in unscripted, candid instances. A videographer works away in the background to capture these magical times, offering a comprehensive and immersive view of your wedding day that goes beyond posed photos. We think that’s worth the investment, don’t you?
Let's be real, your wedding day is like a high-budget production with you and your partner as the stars. And what good is a production without a killer cinematography team? Investing in a photographer and videographer isn't just about vanity (although, your future self will thank you for those fire wedding album pics). It's about capturing the quirky silliness, the tearful tenderness, and the full-blown dance floor madness that makes your love story unique.
P.S. Don't forget to check out the amazing photographers and videographers listed within the pages of Grampian Wedding Directory. They're all local legends, waiting to capture your love story. ó

After the event Will you say ‘I
to the buddymoon?
If Instagram and TikTok is anything to go by, a growing number of to-be-weds are said to be ditching the traditional honeymoon in favour of planning a big holiday with all their pals. In fact, wedding planning company Hitched says as many as one fifth of couples would consider a buddymoon after their special day. The trend is said to be a result of couples living together and exploring the world
before tying the knot, therefore taking the opportunity to make post-wedding travels about discovering a new place with friends. Plus, the post-pandemic desire to spend as much time as possible with loved ones could have had an impact – after all, you have the rest of your life to be just the two of you. What do you think? ó
