INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the
Autumn/Winter issue of the
Grampian Wedding Directory It’s hard for me to believe that the idea to publish the Grampian Wedding Directory happened over 20 years ago and the first issue was printed in September 1999. I must give sincere thanks to every member of my team, past and present, who make GWD happen for you, the most important person in our world – the reader. You can read more about our last two decades – in which we’ve seen 70,000 northeast weddings and 120,000 copies of GWD printed – on page 22. So much has changed over that time and the wedding industry continues to evolve. Recent changes are as a result of a continued tough local economic climate that’s slowly improving – and where the industry will be in 20 years…? Well, wouldn’t we like to know! One major change going forward is that YWE will be in its third home at TECA/P&J Live from January 2020. This stunning new venue will provide a world-class visitor experience to complement simply the largest and, dare I say it, ‘best wedding exhibition’ in the northeast of Scotland. As you’ll expect, this issue features four stunning real-life weddings, the opportunity to win fabulous prizes and, more importantly, an unrivalled selection of local suppliers who’ll make your wedding dreams come true. Of course, you can view the full digital version of GWD online – but our recent reader survey showed that more than 90% of you still prefer the printed version. So, however you wish to consume, just enjoy!
Enjoy

Having been a bridal make-up marvel in Aberdeen for the past seven years, Natalie Fearnley knows just how fast our northeast venues book up. So, within only three days of Stuart Brown’s romantic lovelock bridge proposal in Venice, she was on the phone to her ideal venue. We found out how she transitioned from working wonders in the background to being the belle of the ball on her very own big day...

I had my heart set on a summer wedding and knew instantly when I saw Elsick House that I had to get married in the gorgeous rose gardens and walk down the aisle under the flower arch. Luckily, the weather was on my side on the big day! Our theme was a Spanish and Scottish fusion to represent my family and upbringing in Marbella. Our colour scheme was white and champagne with lots of white peonies and roses. As I’d hoped, we were lucky enough to get married outside. After the ceremony, we had the drinks reception on the lawn with tapas-themed canapés (albondigas, tortilla and gambas) whilst a flamenco singer and guitarist played. They were amazing and it was the perfect Spanish vibe I’d dreamed of. Our evening meal followed suit – Spanish with a Scottish twist. We started with a deli platter that included chorizo in red wine sauce; patatas bravas; garlic and lemon olives; jamón serrano and marinated vegetables, followed by a Midori sorbet (chosen because of Still Game – fellow fans will understand!). Our main course was traditional Scottish beef and chicken with Alford stuffing, then it was churros and chocolate for dessert. The highlight of the wedding for me had to be the dinner entertainment – Singers Secreto. They had all of the guests singing and doing the conga before dessert was even served! In the evening, Grooveline played a mixture of old school soul, Motown music and modern songs. Our first dance was an acoustic version of Paolo Nutini’s Last Request but, because we’re awful dancers and just winged it, the band kindly changed to a higher tempo halfway through and encouraged everyone to join us. I’d also hired confetti canons to go off during the first dance, which I loved as it really added to the atmosphere! Other than enjoy every moment, my advice to bridesand grooms-to-be is to avoid stressing over the small details. Instead, trust your suppliers. They’re amazing at what they do and have lots of experience! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

When it came to decorating Elsick House, for example, I wanted to do as little as possible and leave it to the professionals. Here, Nicky Walker Florist really went above and beyond. Working so many weddings, I’ve never seen a bridal bouquet that I loved. But Nicky listened to exactly what I wanted and really understood my vision. I wanted a specific flower arch for the ceremony, so they searched for the perfect one and even painted it white to fit the theme. For the reception, we had two giant balls of flowers hanging from the roof and a gorgeous floral ball in the centre of each table. And at the top table there were 60 single bud vases, each holding one white rose, which looked beautiful. ♥
Trust your suppliers. They’re amazing at what they do and have lots of experience!

GETTING STARTED
Be prepared! Planning
The boy scout motto is sensible advice for anyone planning a wedding – whether it’s going to be small and intimate or a full-blown, super-romantic, fairy-tale extravaganza! Whatever your vision for your big day, putting thought into what you want before heading to book venues or buy outfits (and the rest!) can pay dividends, leading to a smooth-running event that doesn’t spiral beyond your budget. Good forward planning means you can immerse yourselves in the joy of celebrating your love with friends and family knowing all the little details are ironed out – with back-up plans, just in case!

So, where to start? Get yourself a checklist – we’ve got a handy one you can use as a guide to keep you right, complete with suggested timings of what needs to be done when! Obviously, each individual couple’s wedding is, well, individual to them, so don’t feel tied to any one idea. If you’re a keen planner, create a spreadsheet, use an online tool or paper the walls with a personalised timeline of tasks. And do your homework. Get mags like GWD, have a nosy for ideas on Pinterest and other sites, ask friends and family, get recommendations, visit a show or two (YWE, for instance!), fill a folder with swatches and pics… Just don’t go so wild with this that you forget to actually go and scout out venues and meet suppliers! Does the idea of planning bring you out in a rash? Then delegate! Maybe you’ve got a mate that just loves a project and is prepared to organise your wedding like a military campaign. Otherwise, call in the professionals. A wedding planner can
be worth their weight in gold – and they don’t have to do everything; just the bits you want them to relieve you of. Worried it’ll cost you? Tell them your budget up front and they can adapt to it. They can also use their contacts to get you better deals than you might if you’re doing everything yourself. Speaking of money: sort out your finances! Before you get carried away with booking a castle and hiring a helicopter to whisk you off on honeymoon, sit down as a couple and figure out what you can afford. If family are helping with the costs, you need to include them in the discussions, too. Trust us – decisions about everything else will be much easier if you’ve got the money talk out of the way and know how much leeway (or not) you have. And don’t be shy about telling any potential suppliers about what limits, if any, you have. They can then adapt any packages they’ve got to suit your particular needs.

GETTING STARTED
Next up? Get your guest list roughed out. Putting this together with your budget’ll help you when it comes to choosing a venue. There’s no point, after all, in hiring a cathedral for your wedding if you’re only inviting 20 close family and friends, is there? This’ll also make your research easier. If you have a ballpark figure for guests, you can root around on possible venues’ websites to find out the maximum capacity they’ve got – and also if they’ve a minimum number they’ll cater for. Just as the northeast’s wedding experts can ‘bend’ to fit in with you, remember it’s good to be flexible on your part as well. This is important to keep in mind when you are setting your date. If you’re very patient and prepared to wait for a specific day, great! However, don’t forget that certain days (Fridays and Saturdays) and times of year (summer) are busier than others – suppliers and venues may have been booked well in advance, even years ahead in some cases. If you’re willing to go for mid-week and a quieter season, you can save a bob or two in the process. Once the date’s set, shout about it! Sort out your stationery early so you can get those ‘Save the Date’ cards out sharpish, giving people time to organise around holidays and work. Make your own invitations – get the back-up team in to help and you’ve got an excuse for some socialising into the bargain! Or have a look at online options if you want an electronic version for putting the word out by e-mail or social media. Want to be eco-friendly? Ask local suppliers if they can provide recycled paper or follow a newer trend for paper embedded with seeds that your guests can plant as an alternative favour and memento of your big day. It’s also a great way to tease a little about the style of wedding you’re planning. Alongside your invitations etc, you’ll need to consider gift lists. Tradition has gone out of the window these days as most couples will already have the basics they need – which saves you getting 12 toasters or 19 canteens of cutlery! While you may still want some household items on your wish list, you could add a fancy coffee machine or a posh piece of art (a future investment) – or go for donations towards extras for the honeymoon. Many are going for cash to put towards a future new home when they’re ready. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.byrhea.co.uk
g n i n n a l gP HEADER
If you want to do your bit for charity, however, you can ask for donations and match your favours to your favourite cause as a memento and acknowledgement of their contribution, too. Just remember to send details of where to find the list and when it’ll be open from with your invitations. An online list can make it easier for guests coming from afar and your provider can gather up and keep it all safely for you until you get back from honeymoon. No need to worry about your bride/groom squad carting it from the venue and peace of mind that it’s all safe while you’re away! Other little nuggets to consider include insurance: back to ‘Be prepared’! Even with the best organisation in the world, things can go awry – weather, illness, supplier folding – so secure your big day against any and all eventualities. If you’re not sure who to pick, your wedding planner can advise you. You might also want to invest your pennies in some dance lessons, especially if you’re nervous about your first steps as a married couple and you think you’ve got two left feet! Or it could be that you fancy channelling your inner Anton du Beke or Darcy Bussell and wowing your ‘audience’ with some nifty footwork… Check you’ve got plenty of room on the dance floor before doing your Patrick Swayze-Jennifer Grey Dirty Dancing impression, though! One last thing to consider is yourselves and managing those stress levels. With the best will and planning in the world, organising a wedding is a lot of work and can take a toll on you… so fit in some R&R. Take a step back, get out of town and spend some time together as a couple reminding yourselves of why you want to get hitched. Maybe enjoy a pampering weekend at a spa or just a quiet time together without spreadsheets and checklists. If you really need a break, you can even ban the ‘w’ word! ♥

HENS & STAGS
Bye, Hens & Stags Single Life! With more than half of brides enjoying a whole weekend away for their hen party, celebrating the end of singledom remains big business. But is it still all about partying hard? We take a look at the latest stag and hen trends‌

For the hens Newsflash: the majority of today’s bridesto-be want a ‘zen do’! According to Booking. com, almost three quarters of you would forgo debauched games, shots galore and L-plates in favour of a chilled break in with plenty of beach time, relaxing massages and a cocktail or two. www.jonathanaddie.com
Sounds blissful, but if a long weekend in Marbs isn’t going to work in terms of time, budget or something else, why don’t you create your own version at home? Book into the most luxurious accommodation you can find (check out our hotels section for inspo) and hit their spa for the day, then get pampered and preened before a mixology session in the swanky bar.
www.calumriddell.com
Alternatively, follow the trend for unique stays and find something unusual in the northeast – like a castle, a yurt or a farmhouse. Bring in a healthy breakfast followed by a morning massage or yoga session, then book a pop-up cocktail bar to take you through the afternoon and into the evening.

For the stags According to event agency Chillisauce, stags are increasingly active, particularly when staying in the UK. Jam-packed activity days that combine multiple fun experiences became a massive 800% more common in the last year, whilst the stereotypical bar crawls fell in popularity during the same period of time.
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
Fortunately, your local area is simply brimming with adrenaline-fuelled adventures for wannabe action men. From motor, target and water sports to zorbing, sumo wrestling and Highland games, there’s more than something for everyone. But if you’re tired just reading that, perhaps a lad’s version of the ‘zen do’ could be in order! Think golf on one of Aberdeenshire’s many spectacular courses or a spot of peaceful trout fishing, followed by a barbecue and beers.
Some top tips to get started… Your bridal party will usually organise this celebration on your behalf with the bride and groom rarely paying for anything. They may want to make it a surprise but it’s a good idea to give them a heads-up about what (and who!) you do and don’t like.
www.lochter.co.uk
If factors like location or cost are going to have an impact on whether or not some of your VIPs can make it, let the organisers know so they can arrange something that suits everyone. Encourage your bride and groom squads to avoid becoming so ambitious that they risk losing sight of the whole event. Remember, it should be a chance for everyone to relax, have fun and forget about wedding preparations! Finally, did we mention that the Granite City was recently highlighted as a top designation for stag and hen dos? Events organiser Last Night of Freedom added Aberdeen to its list last year after seeing a big increase in enquiries for celebrations in the northeast. Great news! ♥

GWD IS 20!
Two decades, 70,000 weddings and 120,000 GWDs… Can you believe we’re celebrating 20 years of uniquely advising brides- and grooms-to-be in the northeast?
FREE
*According to the results of a 2019 Grampian Wedding Directory reader survey. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
For the past two decades, we’ve provided our constantly evolving readership with stunning showcases of local weddings, handy supplier suggestions, and endless dress and décor inspo. And with 98% of our readers likely to recommend GWD to a newly engaged friend or family member*, we must be doing something right! Here, our publisher Simon M. Morgan takes a look back through the years… “The Grampian Wedding Directory was officially ‘born’ in May 1999 with the first issue released in the September. This happened to be just a matter of weeks before my daughter was born, so it was like getting two very new but very different babies at the same time! The idea came about as I was helping a friend promote his business to the wedding market. It was a tricky task because the trend at the time, despite a fantastic choice in Aberdeen, was to travel south for wedding suppliers. I quickly realised we were missing something – a resource advising brides- and grooms-to-be about what was on offer in our little corner of Scotland. I knew I could fix it. The vision was to create something that would make wedding dreams come true; a product that would connect local people planning a wedding with suppliers they didn’t realise were on their doorstep. And the result was a glossy, full-colour, handbag-sized directory with 60 pages of informative editorial, inspiring features, reliable listings and relevant adverts – the perfect start for a newly engaged couple ready to dip their toes into the northeast wedding offering. It didn’t take long until there was demand for an online presence too, and our first website was launched in 2000. Since then, we’ve developed so many versions (keeping up with ever-changing trends in both the wedding and web industries!) that I’ve lost count of where we’re at! As the years went on, we were fortunate to see every issue grow due to demand from enthusiastic readers and happy advertisers. Now, two decades and around 70,000 northeast weddings on, we’re publishing a substantial 228 pages, available online and in print. More than 120,000 copies of GWD have been printed in the past 20 years and this has been supplemented by countless online visitors, a wealth of newsletter readers and thousands of social media connections. The team is delighted with what GWD has evolved into and we can’t wait to see what the next 20 years of northeast weddings will hold!” ♥

Belle of Bridal the ball
Bridal couture is big business – and probably one of the biggest things you’ll be thinking about in the leadup to your wedding. Fortunately, we’re here to guide you through the process, from initial thoughts about what you want to wear to gliding up the aisle feeling like a million dollars. Enjoy! Believe it or not, it’s not all about the dress! Although the words ‘wedding’ and ‘dress’ always seem to go together, this doesn’t have to be the case. Your dream outfit may be a statement satin coat, a stylish short shift dress or an edgy trouser suit – but whatever it is, make sure it’s something you feel relaxed, comfortable and confident in.

As such, we quizzed one of her feature brides, Lisa Wilburn, on how she and her other half Jackie decided which outfits were right for them and how they set about finding them.
Q: How did each of you decide what to wear? A: Jackie always knew she’d have a wedding dress and fell in love with number three out of the five she tried on. However, I’m not a dress kinda girl and always knew a suit would be what I’d wear.
Q: It can be difficult to get started when it comes to picking a wedding day outfit. How did you find inspiration? A: We both researched – a lot! We sent photos to one another then Jackie went to try on different shapes to see what suited. What she picked was nothing like the style she’d imagined.

Q: It sounds like, then, for a same-sex wedding that
who wears what comes very naturally as opposed to deciding both brides have to wear a dress, for example?
A: Absolutely. We feel it’s not about deciding who should wear what but being comfortable within yourself and true to who you are. I’d advise others not to be afraid to stand out and be different if that’s who you are in everyday life. It’s the biggest day of your life, after all. You want to look back knowing you did everything you wanted.
Q: What advice would you give to other brides who aren’t dress kinda girls?
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.aboynephotographics.com
A: I’d advise plenty of research to see different options but, most importantly, don’t be pressured into thinking a bridal gown is the norm. If you’re going with a suit, be prepared for a slightly tricky shopping experience as retailers may assume that you’re shopping for your husband-to-be! Of course, not all are of this opinion but it was a challenge we came across.

Q: Any other tips for brides-to-be when deciding what to wear? A: Remember that comfort is the biggest factor so make sure you can dance in it! Consider the time of year you’re getting married to determine the best materials and styles for the weather. And, as I’ve said before, definitely make it something you want so you’re true to who you are and the style you carry. During the shopping process, don’t stress! Look at lots of options but once you’ve found ‘The One’, stop looking because your mind could be easily swayed.
Q: Finally, what was the best part of outfit shopping? And the hardest? A: Trying on all my orders was lots of fun! The challenge was definitely trying to find heels that went with my suit but were also comfortable. For Jackie, she picked her gown so far in advance that the most difficult part was not looking at other dresses.

Finding or creating The OnE Did you know that half of married Brits say they’d redo their wedding if they had the chance? According to wedding planning service Hitched, a confident 18% think they’d be a more striking bride or groom now than when they originally walked down the aisle, while 12% of brides admit they’d wear a different dress to say ‘I do’. This simply underlines the importance of buying a beautiful outfit that’ll only be worn once. It’s a grand gesture unique to a wedding and choosing this allimportant garment is a big moment for any bride-to-be. On average, you’re likely to visit three boutiques, but it’s not uncommon to visit every shop under the sun and still feel like ‘The One’ is nowhere to be seen! If this is the case – and especially if you want to avoid being one of the 12% above – it’s certainly worth getting in touch with one of the northeast’s talented dressmakers who can work with you to figure out exactly what you want and how they can create it in a way that fits your budget and overall wedding style.

THE EXTRAS Whilst the dress – or whichever garment feels right for you – is where people’s eyes will be on the day, there are a lot of other accessories that will contribute to your overall bridal beauty…
Lingerie Most eye-catching outfits have one thing in common… perfectly fitted underwear that sits beneath them! It may not be the most exciting pre-wedding activity, but it’s certainly worth putting a bit of time and effort into sourcing the right lingerie. The perfect set will be largely dependent on your body shape and outfit choice – for slimfitting dresses in delicate fabrics, for example, a smooth bra in a white, ivory or nude shade will give a seamless finish. And, needless to say, suspender belts and stockings should be avoided in favour of figure-hugging underwear – those with control panel tummies are popular with brides who want to make sure they can enjoy their dinner! If you’re going for a fuller dress or one with a heavier fabric, however, you’ll have more choice and can branch out into the likes of lacy or embroidered lingerie.
www.joyceyoungcollections.co.uk
Don’t forget to wear your wedding underwear to fittings – and make sure you also try on a veil and shoes to get an idea of the finished look!
Shoes Talking of which, with a long day ahead of you – for much of which you’ll be standing or dancing – sore feet are simply not an option! So, your wedding shoes must be as comfortable as they are beautiful. Here are our top tips for getting it right in the footwear department…
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.ninaedgedesign.co.uk
Height: We all know high heels make our legs look longer but if you’re tall enough already or can’t face the potential blisters, try out a lower kitten heel, which is said to have the same effect. If you’re going for a column-style dress, you’re going to need a bit of height, but those with a ballgown can get away with a lower heel or even pumps.

Wearing them in: When you think you’ve found the pair for you, make sure they’re a perfect fit by wearing them around the house for a few days. If they have your seal of approval, take them to fittings to check whether alterations are required to the hem of your dress. Preparing for the big day: No bride wants to slip and slide her way up the aisle so check out the soles of your shoes in plenty of time. If they’re ultra-smooth, roughen them up with sandpaper or score them with scissors. The accompaniment: If you’re wearing tights or stockings, go for a nude shade – anything lighter can make your legs look a little anaemic! And keep a spare pair handy as ladders aren’t a good look for that supercute aerial shot of you and your partner’s footwear! The aftermath: Not sure you’ll wear them again? How about dying them a different colour? This is particularly easy with white, silk or satin shoes.

Something different
ALTERATIONS
Gloves were once highly popular but not so much anymore. For classic or vintage-inspired brides, though, it’s a definite option! Keep them on as you come down the aisle (with your engagement ring underneath on your right hand) and, when you reach the top, remove them and pass them to your chief bridesmaid. They can go back on again after signing the register and stay there for photos, but tradition dictates that you’d take them off before the meal.
People’s eyes will be predominantly on your face so the top half of your dress will naturally come under scrutiny and it’s highly important that the bodice of your dress fits well. Your bridal boutique may have a seamstress but, if not, they’ll certainly be able to recommend one.
Meanwhile, a small bag can be very handy – somewhere to stash your lipstick, a tissue or two and your phone if you’re partial to a selfie at the top table! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Alterations aren’t just for fit, however. You have the option to personalise your dress, too. Fancy a little more sparkle? Then ask your dressmaker how you can incorporate a wave of sequins. Worried you’ll lose your bridal handbag? Suggest your seamstress sews a pocket into your dress to hold your essentials instead.

BRIDAL COUTURE
A NOD TO HISTORY White weddings were an invention of the Victorians. Before that, brides simply wore their best dress and sometimes added a white ribbon to indicate purity. Veils were thought to keep away evil spirits who’d be confused by not being able to see the bride. Later, brides leaned on the verse ‘Something old, something new’ and, even now, some still try to incorporate the sentiments into their attire… ‘Something old, something new’ refers to a bride’s passage from her old life to her new one: For something old, have a hunt through the jewellery box of your mother, grandmother or great-grandmother and, if there’s nothing on your side of the family, what about that of your betrothed? What better way to offer you confidence as you enter the family than with a beloved heirloom tucked somewhere on your person? When it comes to something new, this could be seen as the sparkler that’s about to adorn the third finger of your left hand. Alternatively, some brides use this as an excuse to splash out. And why not? Whether it’s luxurious lingerie for the wedding night or those designer heels you just have to have, surely a treat is in order after months and months of wedding planning?

‘Something borrowed’ means that the marriage involves sharing: Does that newlywed friend of yours have something special they wore on their big day and would be happy to share? Or, even better, is there something that your matron of honour (the married version of a maid of honour) sported when she said her vows? It could be jewellery, a hairpiece or even a veil if it works with your outfit – and if they’re comfortable lending it out, of course! ‘Something blue’ alludes to the colour’s association with constancy: This one is pretty flexible – go for a navy garter, royal blue shoes, baby blue blooms (hydrangeas or hyacinths are a good bet) or keep it under wraps and add a bit of colour to your lingerie! ‘And a silver sixpence in your shoe’ refers to the hope of prosperity within the marriage: Traditionally a bride’s father would gift his daughter a silver sixpence to wear in her left shoe as a symbol of his love, wishing her and her new partner love, happiness and prosperity. These days it’s still a popular good luck charm, especially for the vintageinspired bride, but can be given by anyone in all manner of ways.

And finally… Your attire is likely to be one of the biggest spends in your wedding budget so make sure you take care of it on the day. Accidents do happen, however, so here are our top tips for getting out of sticky situations: Heel hell: High heels can easily tear fine fabric so prevention is better than cure here – invest in some heel protectors. Confetti chaos: Paper confetti + water = disaster! Avoid stains by giving your outfit a quick once over after your confetti shower, especially if it’s a rainy day! www.avoriobridal.com
www.calumriddell.com
www.ninaedgedesign.co.uk
Not-so-lovely lilies: If you’ve chosen these flowers, remove the stamens ahead of time to avoid pesky stains. Fizz fails: A little champagne spill seems harmless but they can actually turn brown after dry cleaning, so sponge them off ASAP. ♥

If you are talking dresses, there are a wide range of hot trends at the mo… Fancy a streamlined look? Go for structured silhouettes with very little decoration or embroidery added. Or how about some more unusual pastels? Lilac, lavender and sage green could tie in nicely with a Highlandthemed wedding. For a dash of spring colour, you could also try buttercup yellow! For a deeper shade and a bit of warmth at your winter nuptials, how about velvet in sapphire blue? Mix in French blue to soften the look if you so desire. And how about a one-shoulder neckline or, if your gals have the pins for it, high slits? You can add some shimmer by opting for gowns in satin, too, or maybe they’d prefer wrap dresses in every possible length with a choice of sleeves – spaghetti straps, long or short and fluttery!

Of course, the happy couple will want to set the tone to fit with the look they’ve planned for the big day, but there’s flexibility within that to have bridesmaids and men in complementing shades and outfits that let their personalities shine through. And if they’re more comfortable in trousers, a well-tailored suit can look stunning, too. Don’t forget the little details! Organise a session for hairdos and make-up beforehand so everyone’s prepared. Take outfits along and you can get an idea of how you’ll all look on the day. It’s also a good excuse for some pre-wedding socialising to bond the team and get a break from all the prep. Just as we’d advise the happy couple, it’s worthwhile suggesting to your maids that they get decent undies and shoes that are stylish but comfortable – they’re going be on their feet a lot! And you might want to treat them to some jewellery or a posh tie clip as a memento of the occasion and to put the finishing touch to their look. A perfect thank-you for their support.♥

MUMS' OUTFITS
Marvellous Mums mums
As much as it’s a big day for the happy couple, they’re not the only ones celebrating a momentous occasion. Mothers-of-the-bride and -groom are centre stage too, seeing their children set off on the next chapter in their lives – and expected to be the epitome of glamour and elegance on top of it all! So, planning their wedding outfits requires bags of attention to detail. The key to the perfect wedding ensemble for these important ladies is co-ordination. First of all, check with the newlyweds-to-be what colours they’ve picked, and then consult with each other to avoid any embarrassing clashes – such as accidentally picking the same dress! Then you’ll need to do a bit of research – GWD and other mags, online, etc. – to get an idea of styles, before heading out to the northeast’s top shops for all things matrimonial. It makes it easier if you have a notion of shapes you like, colours you prefer and designers that have caught your eye to help narrow down your list of stops and give the suppliers a starting point for offering guidance.

While looking a million dollars is definitely a priority, keep comfort in mind too when you’re trying outfits on. You need to be sure that you have room to breathe – sitting as well as standing – and that you can move easily. After all, you’ll want to hit the dance floor at some point! And wear good quality, neutrally coloured undies to see how a dress or suit will sit. Shoes about the height of those you’re likely to be wearing are handy too. When it comes to selecting the best dress – if that’s your preference, think silhouette. A fuller or flared skirt might work better for the curvy figure – with a cinched-in waist, whilst shoulder pads can be great if you’ve got narrow shoulders. And consider whether you want a sleeveless design or not. If you prefer to keep your arms covered, how
Patterned dresses are on trend at the moment – from romantic florals to big, bold monochrome polka dots. Alternatively, you could try a stylish embroidered piece or dramatic lace – with or without additional sequins, or have a crystalstudded bodice with a plain skirt. In fact, why not go for a skirt and top if that’s more to your taste? Colours are wide and varied too – a black dress with dramatic red flowers, pastels such as lilac and blush pink, or soft tones of grey or mocha. Make it complementary to the bridal colours and that should keep you right. And if a dress isn’t your style? A trouser suit or even jumpsuit might be more up your street.

pre-wedding pampering? When choosing a hat – if you want one, and some don’t – think about how it’ll look in photos as well as whether it works with your hairdo. There are new designer tartans being added all the time – or you could choose from non-clan options, such as Grey Granite, Spirit of Scotland or Midnight Granite to mention a few. You could also find out if you can sport the tartan from your university or favourite football team. By the way, if the thought of tartan leaves you cold, you can go for a single colour kilt – black, blue, green or red. Use the link to Scottish designers on the Tartan Register’s website to find out who weaves what. Alternatively, The Scottish Tartans Authority (www.tartansauthority.com) or our knowledgeable northeast Highlandwear suppliers can give you guidance on what’s available – although there’ll obviously be more options if you go bespoke rather than hire. And if you want to make it truly personal, you can even design your own tartan and add to that ever-growing list! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.aberdeenphoto.com
The other big decision is what style and colours you’ll want. If you favour a kilt, it might be that you’ve got a family tartan, which makes your choices simpler. However, if you haven’t got a clan to pick from somewhere in your family tree, don’t despair: there are literally hundreds to choose from! The Scottish Tartan Register (www.tartanregister. gov.uk) is a good place to find out what’s available and if there are restrictions on use. For example, no matter how big a fan you are of Scrooge MacDuck and think it would be a hoot to wear his tartan, that one belongs to Disney!
www.aboynephotographics.com
The first decision you’ll need to make is this: hire or buy? This’ll depend on a few factors, including whether or not you think you’ll wear your kilt or suit again, but it’ll also come down to what your budget allows – unless you’re lucky enough to be getting your full ensemble as a wedding gift.

Aside from the kilt, you’ll need to think about shirts – black or white; ties – tartan to match or plain; waistcoats – handy if you want to be less restricted or lessen the heat factor when dancing; socks – black, white or ecru; flashes for your socks; sgian dubhs, belts and kilt pins; sporrans and the necessary chain; and shoes. If you and your groomsmen are going for a similar look, but you want to stand out, these are the items that can be tweaked to give you a slightly different look. You also have the chance to go bespoke on many of these, perhaps getting engraved sgian dubhs or tie pins for the groom squad as a memento. Go for designer shoes as a wee treat; or maybe have your shirt collar embroidered with your name or an emblem – a stag’s head, for instance.

Then there’s the jackets available: Sherrifmuir, Argyll, Crail, Ghillie, Edwardian or contemporary. Going for tartan trousers or trews instead of a kilt? Then the Bonnie Prince Charlie is usually the ticket. Match it with your chosen waistcoat or go for contrasting colours. A deep plum colour could look very stylish under a blue jacket.

Remember to factor in plenty of time whether you’re hiring or buying – longer for the latter, obviously, especially if you’re having a new tartan created. Don’t leave it until the last minute or you may be disappointed and have limited choice. You need to consider that in high wedding season it may not just be you and your groomsmen hiring kilts – the guests’ll be after them too! And ask about group discounts, plus if your outfitter can show you how to put everything on correctly. They may be able to provide you with a dressing service on the day, too. This might bring a further cost, though. So, ensure you know what’s included in the whole price and what they charge extra for.

For some, kilts just aren’t their thing, but that doesn’t mean you’re restricted in your options. You might want to go for morning dress, complete with a top hat. Although technically the most correct colour is grey, coats can be black (with a hint of colour through the weave) or blue, with ivory, light blue, pink or grey waistcoats. The coat should fit the contours of your body and create an S-shape when seen from the side. Shirts are generally light pastel colours and trousers striped. A contrasting, but complementary hue works for ties – and don’t forget the flower for your buttonhole!

Alternatively, you could go for a designer three-piece suit – Armani or Ted Baker perhaps – in an unusual colour. While charcoal, black or shades of blue are standard, why not try burgundy for something a little different? If you’re buying off the peg, ask about alterations to get a perfect fit – some outfitters offer this service free, but check before signing on the dotted line. And for one final piece of personalisation? Add some posh cufflinks. Or maybe you’d prefer to add a hint of your sense of humour… Lego bricks, R2-D2 or Captain America? ♥

Let's hear it for the boys! If they’re going full kilt, there’s fox fur sporrans to choose from, alongside bespoke kilt pins and cufflinks. How about a graceful stag’s head? For ushers and best men, a wee gift of a posh, engraved hip flask – filled with something warming for a winter wedding, of course – or a silver shaving kit for keeping those beards well trimmed. With sharp suits and tartan trews for the snappy dresser, their elegance is assured.

Combined last names are definitely one of the coolest things on the wedding circuit right now and these lovely ladies’ surnames sound like they were meant to be blended – let us introduce Mrs and Mrs Wilburn! Formerly Jackie Wilson and Lisa Hepburn, these blushing brides tied the knot at Maryculter House Hotel in March. Lisa tells us all…

We chose Maryculter for its beautiful views and it helped that we clicked with Gemma, the wedding coordinator, from our first meeting. We wanted a simple, elegant wedding with touches of black, white and silver, and she went above and beyond to make it happen for us. We also brought in Amy from Cymbeline Events, who we were very lucky to have. Nothing was too much and she made our wedding beautiful. On that note, I’d definitely advise other brides to go with suppliers they have a good rapport with because you’ll spend most of your day with some of these guys. When it came to deciding what to wear, I went for a white embellished suit, paired with heels for the ceremony. Later, I switched to flats from Converse’s Pride collection to match Jackie. Our bridal party (who we’d asked by sending a fun ‘boomf’ box) were in keeping with our theme. Jackie’s bridesmaids wore beautiful black dresses with silver detail and mine wore a grey suit with a white shirt. We also had a bridesman – he looked very handsome in a grey Crombie kilt. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Jackie, however, had a bit of anxiety around her outfit. She’d obviously never tried on a wedding dress before and had no idea what style she wanted. But her experience ended up being great! Midnight Elegance was the only shop she went to and Kathy made the search for a gown fantastic. She offered five very different styles to start off with, but didn’t even need them all, as Jackie fell for the third one she tried on. It was an embellished princess-style dress and everyone, including Jackie, cried when she came out wearing it. Kathy also came along to dress Jackie on the day. She was absolutely brilliant and stayed with her until she walked down the aisle, keeping her calm. We had a humanist ceremony, which allowed us to tell the story of our relationship so far. We wrote our own vows and made the drinks reception personal with a playlist we put together.

For our menu, we wanted to give our guests a bit of variety but also have something for everyone. The starter was a choice of haggis gateau or melon and the main course was chicken or salmon. For dessert, our 80 guests had the option of sticky toffee pudding or mixed berry cheesecake. Another 80 guests joined us in the evening. Our first dance was Ed Sheeran’s Tenerife Sea, which has meant something to us from the very beginning of our relationship. We didn’t have a routine or lessons… we just went with it! We hired in some treats for the evening: a chocolate fountain from Candy Corner and smoke grenades by NJE Fireworks, plus sparkly confetti canons and uplighters from The Big Show. There was also an LED dance floor and starlit backdrop from Your Day Wedding Services – perfect to show off our band, Waterfront. After seeing them, we knew they were the band for us. Their energy and variation were brilliant, and they filled the dance floor from start to finish.I’d definitely advise other brides to go with suppliers they have a good rapport with because you’ll spend most of your day with some of these guys. ♥

FLOWERS
Finding Flowers the Right Flowers Whether you’re a bride and a groom, two brides or a couple of grooms, it’s common knowledge during wedding planning that no matter how much you try to cut costs and corners, a wedding just isn’t a wedding without flowers! But which are best for your season? Take a look at our top tips below, whilst remembering that some are highly versatile and generally work all year round: alstroemeria, carnations, freesias, gerberas, gypsophila, lilies, orchids and roses, for example.
Spring:
Anemones, bluebells, camellias, crocuses, forget-menots, grape hyacinths, hellebores, hyacinths, lilies of the valley, narcissi, pansies, ranunculi, tulips and violets.
Summer:
Campanulas, cornflowers, delphiniums, hydrangeas, jasmine, lady’s mantle, larkspurs, marguerites, peonies, phlox, roses, scabious, stocks and sweet peas.
Autumn:
Amaranthus, chrysanthemums, cosmos, dahlias, hydrangeas, Japanese anemones, Michaelmas daisies, scabious.
Winter:

Colour-wise, white and cream are classic choices and give an air of elegance and tradition. They look fab against rich, textured foliage, too. But if you’re going for summer nuptials, consider bringing in some pretty, soft pastels. Use a mixture or combine a single shade with white to add a romantic vibe. Alternatively, turn to the tropics and let bright blooms take the lead in the brilliant light of summer.
www.aboynephotographics.com
At the opposite end of the spectrum (and perfect for the upcoming winter wedding season), deep hues add drama and sophistication, providing a striking contrast against a pale wedding dress or suit. Don’t go overboard, though. Less is more here! www.jenniferriddell.co.uk
www.janiebarclay.com
With flower colour and type sorted, you just need to fit it all together. So, here’s our handy checklist covering the full range of blooms you’re likely to need on the big day:
www.simonclubb.com
• Bride’s bouquet • Bouquets or posies for the bridesmaids/men and flower girls • Corsages for the mothers • Buttonholes for the groom(s), best man/ woman, ushers and fathers • Displays for the ceremony • Arrangements for the reception www.calumriddell.com

Ordering all of the above may fill you with fear when it comes to looking at cost, but there are simple ways to save pennies. Firstly, sticking to what’s in season is wise because that’s usually where you’ll find the most value.
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
In addition, take a look at your venue. Where will flowers have most impact? Could a couple of cleverly positioned arrangements be more powerful than lots of posies dotted around? If you’re tying the knot in a church, it’s worth asking whether anyone else is doing the same that day. Would they be up for filling the space with one lot of florals and splitting the cost with you? If not, could you double up yourself? If you ask the ushers nicely, they could move your ceremony flowers to the reception area or venue. Talking of roping people in, if you have green-fingered friends or relatives, get them involved, whether that means providing their best roses fresh from the garden or helping you pull wild flowers into eye-catching arrangements. And if you’ve still got a while before the big day, how about planting pots with bulbs that’ll be in bloom by your wedding day?
www.jonathanaddie.com
Remember, your floral display doesn’t have to be expensive or sophisticated to look good. Sometimes the thoughtful, handmade efforts are the most charming… ♥

BEAUTY
Being Beauty Beautiful
In the age of body confidence, every bride-to-be (or groom-tobe for that matter) could simply stride down the aisle as they are and blow their guests away with natural beauty. However, in the era of endless Instagram snaps, wedding videos that last forever and, of course, wanting to feel your very best on your big day, a little pampering is almost always essential!
Discussing diet and shape can be controversial but it crosses the minds of most people planning to tie the knot, regardless of their size or gender. The most important thing to remember is that the lead-up to your wedding is definitely not the best time for a crash diet. You need to save energy for planning and enjoying that hen or stag do!

Instead, start early and look at lifestyle changes you could make. Is your diet as healthy as it could be? And when was the last time you really got your heart rate going? Bearing in mind that seating plan-related sweats don’t count, of course! Altering eating habits, upping water intake and getting half an hour of exercise three times a week could work wonders. If in doubt, though, Aberdeenshire’s nutritionists and fitness experts are on hand to assist. They’ll wow you with some weddingspecific packages, too.
www.byrhea.co.uk
Next up, a bride’s hair should be her crowning glory so take care when selecting a stylist for your big day. And have at least one trial run so the ’do can be perfected and you can get to know one another ahead of a potentially nerve-wracking wedding morning.

Make sure to ask them how to best prepare your hair for the occasion. They’ll be able to recommend a haircare routine: did you know you should give your locks a final rinse with cold water after washing to encourage the hair’s cuticles to lie flat, making it look shiny? They may also suggest a regular deep conditioning treatment and will probably advise regular trims to keep pesky split ends at bay. Quiz them about prep on the day, too. Should you wash your hair before they arrive or will this make it hard to handle? Most of all, though, they’ll warn you not to make any dramatic hair-related changes unless you’re a million per cent sure it’ll be a success!

JEWELLERY

As soon as you said “yes” and slipped that stunning sparkler onto the third finger of your left hand, you’ll have been dazzling people left, right and centre. But as time goes on, the engagement ‘bubble’ pops and normal life resumes, you’ll find your ring can end up going through the wars a bit – doing the dishes, a spot of gardening, a visit to the beach and perhaps even – *gasp* – a trip into the swimming pool! Although precious metals are highly durable and diamonds are one of the world’s hardest natural materials, neither are invincible. So, although it may not be the sexiest of topics, taking good care of your engagement ring – and your wedding ring when it arrives – is crucial if you want to maintain its beauty and longevity.
Keep it on…
www.calumriddell.com
…but do remove them sometimes! Of course, there are some exceptions to the above rule – cleaning, for example, as bleach and other harsh chemicals could dull the finish of the metal and harm coloured stones. In addition, moisturiser, sun cream and perfume can gunk up your bling, so it’s a good idea to be ring-free when applying these. Meanwhile, hands-on activities (gardening, doing the dishes, moving furniture and exercising) should also be ring-free zones. Keeping a couple of little ring dishes around the house – next to your bed, the sink and in the bathroom perhaps – is a good idea to remind you to remove them when necessary.
We’ve all heard stories of people’s rings mysteriously disappearing down a drain so as tempting as it may be to slip them off when you’re lathering up, don’t – especially in a public washroom! On that note, avoid removing your rings anywhere in public – aim to always keep them on your person. If you do have to go without, though, pop them on a necklace chain and keep them close that way.
www.aberdeenphoto.com
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
If they’re coming off for a longer period of time (you’re off on an action-packed adventure holiday, for example), make sure you have a safe spot for them. A fabric-lined jewellery box with dividers is recommended to ensure the rings don’t rub up against one another or any of your other jewels. And consider popping the box in a fireproof safe for ultimate security.

Traditionally, the happy couple

something that suits their taste and your spend!
www.simonclubb.com
Get a check-up Most jewellers will give your rings a quick health check for free so schedule an appointment at least once a year. It’s important they check the prongs on your engagement ring are tight because if they loosen or bend, your gemstone could slip out – not good! www.calumriddell.com
www.jonathanaddie.com
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
Keep them clean Dirt, oil and residue can quickly build up and, without regular cleans, you’ll find your sparkler looking more dull than brilliant. Jewellers recommend a couple of cleans per year – but that doesn’t mean sourcing a random product online to use at home! Whilst it’s said that Elizabeth Taylor used a concoction of hot water and gin, together with a toothbrush, to keep her 33.19 carat Krupp diamond ring sparkly, a trip to the experts for a proper steam clean is the safest option for the masses. Remember, if your wedding is coming up, this is the ideal time to give your engagement ring a spruce up. Take full advantage of your jeweller’s cleaning technology and expertise as close to the big day as you can and, ideally, hold off wearing your ring again until the big day to preserve the ultra-sparkly look.

Avoid the centre stone Precious stones are magnets for dust, dirt and oil so avoid touching them at all costs! When putting on or taking off your ring, don’t grab the stone – put your fingers on the band on either side of the stone. And if your stone suddenly looks hazy or cloudy? It’s likely there’s something stuck underneath it, so go and get it checked out with your local jeweller.
Avoid repeated resizing Planning a pregnancy shortly after you tie the knot? Bear in mind that your hands are likely to swell and your rings will become tight or completely unwearable. It may be tempting to get them resized to suit but did you know that frequent adjustments can make the metal more fragile and subject to long-term damage? Instead, as hard as it may be, simply store it away safely until your hands return to their normal size.
Within this, bear in mind that the cost of gemstones and precious metals increase over time so it’s worth having your jewellery appraised every five years or so. If you lost something that hadn’t been appraised since you bought it ten years ago, the insured value would fall far short of the actual replacement cost.
A final word on fine gifts… Traditionally, the happy couple give pressies to their bridal party on the big day. Sometimes the mothers, fathers and other VIPs, like siblings or special friends who are doing a reading or speech on the big day, get a generous gesture too.
And, just in case…
They don’t have to be extravagant – more important that it’s something the recipient will keep as a reminder of the part they played in your wedding. As such, something they can wear is a popular option – think earrings, a bracelet or a necklace for your leading ladies and a set of cufflinks (themed to suit their personality, perhaps?) for the gents. Alternatively, go traditional with a fine gift, like a quaich engraved with the date you tied the knot.
Insurance is a no-brainer. Having your prized possessions insured will protect your financial investment in the unlikely circumstance of them being lost, stolen or damaged.
Head for the northeast’s excellent jewellers who will be able to advise you on costs and trends, ensuring you wow your loved ones with something that suits their taste and your spend! ♥

Smiles all Round
After a surprise engagement in Mexico
and a fizz-filled engagement party in her
parents’ summer house, Amber Souter got
down to the finer details of planning her
classic and romantic, yet relaxed and fun,
wedding to Barry Aitken. Here’s how their
May wedding weekend went…

I really never have smiled so much. It was the most amazing day and we feel very lucky to have celebrated at Glen Tanar for the whole weekend. On Friday we had our rehearsal, a meal and a walk to the loch where my late Granda enjoyed fishing. Raising a glass here was a special start to the weekend. I stayed with my girls in one of the cottages and got the best surprise when I realised Once Upon a Balloon had been in to add their touch. It looked amazing. The next morning the champagne was flowing and, with a playlist of my favourite songs on, we danced and sang in our complimenting pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns. We’d gone together in advance to a Jo Malone ‘Scent Your Wedding’ session and I’d got the shower gel, body cream, perfume and candle so we used these. I also surprised the girls with hand and arm massages from Beauty Therapy with Paula, which was really relaxing. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
I was so excited to finally wear my bespoke Ian Stuart dress. I’d had numerous shopping days around the country but returned to Avorio and found ‘The One’. Unknown to me, it had appliqués similar to my Moses basket when I was born… My mum was in floods of happy tears! The Chapel of St Lesmo was so special. We’d always wanted a cosy setting so the quaint, candlelit atmosphere was perfect. Barry and I stood at the top of the steps at the front of the chapel facing our guests during our ceremony and it was the highlight of my day. It was so intimate and romantic. The drinks reception was great fun, especially with the gin bar my dad built for our engagement party. It was a roaring success! We also used his antique bike, adding flowers to the basket and balloons to the handlebars. It looked really cute. The videographer suggested we have a go riding it and what a laugh that was! I was in the basket with my dress bundled up whilst
HEADER
Barry pedalled us across the lawn, dotting around our guests sipping their drinks. I think this sums up how chilled and fun our day was! We also had Myke Black singing and Rich Gordon on the sax. They were a fantastic duo. Inside, Flowers by Lesley had really gone above and beyond. We had a moon ring floral display, which was stunning. The candelabras were dressed in fresh flowers, the fairy-lit staircase had a beautiful display and the fireplace was adorned with florals and candles. Choosing our menu was easy as when we went to our tasting night, we both chose exactly the same! We had haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by a fillet of roast beef and trio of desserts. The food and drink were exceptional. Our favours were after dinner liqueurs: Baileys or Disaronno. In the evening we had Callanish. They provided a bit of everything (ceilidh mixed with a playlist we chose in advance) and, for our first dance, we had Luke Combs’ Beautiful Crazy.

The ballroom at Glen Tanar is perfect for dancing. The floor was always busy, although people popped off to refuel at the sweet treat table, full of home bakes from family and friends. Looking back on our big day, my advice to other brides would be to enjoy every minute. I loved all of our engagement and wedding celebrations and being married is even better! ♥

Hospitality Hotels Guaranteed
Picking the venue for your big day is top of the list of things to do when planning your wedding – and you’re spoilt for choice in the northeast when it comes to superb spaces. Baronial mansions, village halls, castles, country estates, art deco hotels… we’ve got the lot! Which does make it a teeny bit harder to decide… but, if you’re keen for all mod cons with staff on hand to deal with everything and minimise your stress, one of our outstanding hotels might be just what you’re looking for.

Whether you want to book for just your reception or the whole day, there are lots of advantages to marrying in a hotel. First up – they’ll have a wedding manager who can help with arrangements, take charge of organising guests on the day by acting as master of ceremonies and be there to ensure the smooth running of every aspect of your wedding. They can also help with advice on finding other suppliers who they’ve worked with before, if you’re not sure where to start. This can be an additional boost to your plans as they’ll already know the venue and have a good working relationship with the staff.

Secondly, they have an on-site catering team, which saves time on research and planning, and they’ll have experience of dealing with events from small to large. Moreover, if you’ve got guests with specific dietary needs, they’re likely to have provisions in place for them, too. Another bonus? Accommodation! Lots of it, hopefully, so you can have the whole bridal team together, a chance for a prewedding meal with the family, a leisurely breakfast in the morning and plenty of space to get ready before the all-important taking of vows. And a bolthole when your need a wee breather from the festivities…? They might offer preferential rates for guests too – but check you’re not liable for any rooms that aren’t booked – and, if they’re part of an international chain, why not enquire about a deal on your honeymoon? Also, could your guests extend their stay and turn it into a mini holiday? So many possibilities… But first… how do you decide which of our excellent hotels is the best for you? Well, you need to know your budget for starters, how many guests you’re likely to invite – rough numbers at least, and an idea of when you’d like to get hitched. Factoring in high season demand, if you’re a little flexible on the date, then you’re more likely to get the hotel of your dreams roughly when you want it – especially if you don’t mind getting married mid-week. But, if there’s a special date you’ve set your hearts on, be prepared to wait. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

As well as doing some homework on the various hotels in the area – location, capacity, special features, exclusivity – it’s worthwhile sitting down together to make a list of questions you’d like to ask when you arrange to visit and meet their wedding coordinator. And remember – there’s no such thing as a silly question. Better to ask that not! Having a struggle whittling down your list? See if any of the hotels you’re interested in are having a wedding show, then you can have a look around with no obligation or pressure to see if you like the feel of the place – and you may even grab a bargain if they’ve got any special offers on for that particular day. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Once you’ve got your shortlist, go armed with your questions and note down the responses you get for comparison later. It’s a great way of helping you sort the hotels pros and cons when you come to decide. And follow up your visit with an e-mail to check you took everything down correctly or with anything that pops into your mind after the fact. Getting it all down in writing will save disappointment later and ensure you have all the details you need to make an informed decision of where to get wed.

Essential questions? Here’s a few suggestions: 1. Who will be there on the day? And can you meet them so you know who you’re dealing with? 2. How many weddings do they do in one day? If there’s more than one, how will that be managed? 3. Aside from upper capacity, what’s the minimum number of guests? 4. Is there flexibility in their packages? For example, you might want to alter the menu to suit your tastes more. 5. Are there any renovations or other planned changes to the building – new colour scheme, for example – before your date? 6. Where will the ceremony take place (if you’re marrying on-site) and is the reception in the same room? If yes, how will the changeover be organised? 7. What about getting married in the grounds? Do they have a garden or gazebo to accommodate this?

And don’t forget to ask about payment details – when deposits need to be made, how much it is, cost per head for meals, when they expect final payment, do they have payment plans if you want to pay in instalments, etc. Consider contingency plans as well – cancellation policies, public liability insurance, extra costs if you suddenly have more guests than expected, moving events indoors if there’s unexpected bad weather. High winds may not be good if you’re planning to marry in a marquee in the grounds, so you need to know how that could be dealt with should the worst happen.

The answers to your questions will help you make a decision, but don’t forget the human factor. Did you meet the main staff who’ll be in charge on the day? Did you like them and feel you could work with them? After all, you’re going to be liaising with them for many months in the run-up, so it’s important you feel comfortable with them. Organising a wedding is stressful enough without tensions between you and the personnel making your dreams reality.

Whatever you do, though, don’t decide without a visit. While websites are all sparkly and shiny, they won’t let you feel the vibe and size of a location. You might think a country house hotel is perfect, but find that it’s too big for your needs or too far for some of your guests to get to once you give it the once-over. And can it accommodate people with mobility challenges? A city hotel may not offer the scope you want if you’re having a big event as it may not have the capacity to add a marquee in the gardens.
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Perhaps parking is an issue, too – will there be enough? You might want somewhere with roaring log fires for a winter wedding or an art deco gem with large ballroom. If you can’t envisage how a venue could work for you, why not ask to see a wedding they’ve got set up as well, so you have a better image in your head of how things might look on your special day? Taking the time to look round will give you peace of mind that you’ve covered all bases when it comes down to making the final choice.

Friends and family coming with children might appreciate it if there’s a babysitting service and facilities for them to play. Should good travel connections be essential, then a city hotel might be ideal – or see if your venue can help you arrange a coach to get everyone to and from the church if it’s a reception-only event. The team are bound to know the best local suppliers. Want to hedge your bets? Then you’re in luck – the northeast has hotels with both a country feel but a city location, giving you the best of both worlds. One final thought… The tiniest details can tip the scales in favour of one hotel over another, especially when there are so many excellent options in the northeast. It could be a garden where you can plant your very own rose as a memento of your wedding day. Perhaps a modern hotel in the city has a waterfall hidden away that’s the cherry on the cake for you. Is there a stunning view of Bennachie from the grounds that’s the perfect backdrop? Or it could be that the hotel you choose has a special place in your hearts because of a very personal connection that’s woven into the history of your romance. Where better to begin your happy ending? ♥

ACCOMMODATION
Where to Stay Accommodation Accommodation may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you start wedding planning but, depending on where you’re tying the knot, it can be an important factor. Here are some things to think about…

ACCOMMODATION
Make sure there’s plenty of space for everyone and everything – there’ll likely be a hairdresser and make-up artist, plus photographers and videographers, and that’s before we’ve even mentioned the bridal party or the mums!
What about your bridal party?
www.glentanar.co.uk
Where do you want to get ready? Traditionally, a bride would get ready at her parents’ house and the groom elsewhere. This is one tradition that’s not yet gone out of fashion but, equally, anything goes these days. If you have your own place, one of you may wish to get ready amongst home comforts, but if you’re saying “I do” far from home, it’s likely you may stay at (or near) the venue. In that case, consider early doors whether there’s accommodation on-site, either within the place itself or on the grounds – like the cottages our feature couple, Amber and Barry, had at Glen Tanar.
On that note, think about where your nearest and dearest will stay. If you’re marrying in a stately home, there’s often enough space to host close friends and family, but in a hotel, you’ll need to book some rooms next to one another in plenty of time. If you’re going for lodges or cottages, check how many people each one houses and consider groupings early on to avoid any awkwardness right before the big day. If your big day is in the city, how about serviced accommodation? Providing a home from home, it’s spacious and luxurious whilst giving you the flexibility to do what you wish. Help is always on hand too, from bringing in suppliers to helping out with laundry and shoe shining!
And other guests? It’s now commonplace to mention accommodation on the invitation or wedding website, so give them a heads-up about what’s available in or around the venue, especially if many are not local. Without overwhelming them, give a few options: somewhere for those with kids, those looking for a budget break and those turning it into a luxurious weekend away, for example.
Finally, where will the newlyweds rest their heads?
www.millenniumhotels.com/en/aberdeen/copthorne-hotel-aberdeen
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Don’t forget about yourselves! After months of wedding planning, you deserve a good night’s sleep and a relaxing morning. If you’re in a hotel, make sure the bridal suite is reserved for you ASAP; if it’s a stately home, pick the most lavish of all the rooms and if there’s no accommodation on-site, the world is your oyster! ♥

CASTLES & STATELY HOMES
A Play on Maids Tradition
So, you’ve hired a captivating castle or spectacular stately home for your big day – perfect! Are you going to envelop yourself in tradition and live like royalty or will you be putting a modern spin on it?
The ceremony Sticking with tradition: Whether inside or out (have you seen some of the exquisite lawns that hug castles and stately homes in the northeast?), tradition dictates that the couple don’t see one another until “I do”. Vows are said in front of a large, seated audience after a much-anticipated walk down the aisle, then the couple’s paired-up attendants and close families follow them out as newlyweds for a confetti-filled congratulations. Beautiful!

Mixing it up: Shy about declaring your love before a big audience? Then keep it to just you two, or add a very select few. With a small gathering you’ll really feel the atmosphere of your surroundings, both at the time and in the photos. Afterwards, everyone else can celebrate with you on one of those sweeping lawns! For a different vibe, use a smaller space within the venue and have your guests stand – ideal for short and sweet nuptials, and it encourages them to get to know one another. Post ceremony, there’s no need for the bridal party to be in awkward pairs. Let the bridesmaid squad link arms and giggle their way out with the lads following!

The reception Sticking with tradition: For a formal plated meal, the traditional seating plan tends to come out trumps. Although it can feel like musical chairs when planning, you’ll know everyone’s in good company. Put those who know one another together then look for guests with similarities – age, interests, children and jobs, perhaps. Mix introverts and extroverts and balance your genders. And pop singletons into the plan early so they don’t end up as fillers! Seat your close friends and family near the top table. Talking of which, the stars of the show take the centre with their parents either side and mixed – e.g. for a heterosexual wedding, the bride sits next to her father who would have the groom’s mother on his other side. Traditionally, the chief bridesmaid and best man are here too, with the best man chumming up the groom’s mother. And, of course, the newlyweds take their seats last for that big cheer! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Mixing it up: Going for an informal buffet? Then let guests sit where they want. Hurrah, no seating plan drama for you! If this sounds too radical, how about having married people on the same table but not next to one another? Or keep them as a pair but sandwiched between others they’ve not met before and can get to know? Alternatively, sit partners opposite one another at long trestle tables. Many couples put their own spin on the top table, whether it’s adding step-parents, having the whole bridal party or something different – paring it back with a ‘sweetheart table’, for example. Having this table for two frees up your main players, so how about using them as hosts? Your parents could head a table of their friends and family, whilst a bridesmaid and groomsman could do the honours at a younger table! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Well, there is one thing… hiring bespoke spaces can result in a few more items on your wedmin list. But, don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through those extra wee tasks – and to remind you that they’ll absolutely be worth it when you walk into the DIY wedding of your dreams!
Some venues and marquees supply tables, chairs, china and so on, whilst others don’t. If you’re faced with the latter, start by checking if your caterer can help out. Failing that, it’s a case of hiring in – coupled with a bit of careful planning and organisation!
With stunning, uninterrupted views out over the Hill of Fayre and surrounding Banchory and Aberdeenshire countryside, the Cowshed offers mouth-watering good food, showcasing Scottish produce at its very best and prepared by our team of award winning chefs – you and your guests will enjoy a day to remember.

Aim to strike the perfect balance between having enough of everything and avoiding paying for far more than you need. Ideally, finalise food and drink plans before placing an order, because the number of courses, what they consist of and the table drinks on offer will determine what you hire. In general, though, you’re likely to need the following: tables, chairs, glassware (wine and water glasses, plus water jugs for the table, flutes for toasts and extras for the bar), serving dishes, cutlery, table linen and accessories – like salt and pepper mills. Don’t forget crockery – including milk jugs and sugar bowls – if you’re planning to offer hot drinks, and perhaps teapots and cafetières, too.

Next, compare quotes and check terms and conditions. What are the delivery charges? Can equipment be returned dirty? And what are the rules for breakages, insurance and payment?

Check with your venue to ensure there’s plenty of easily accessible storage for whatever you hire. It’s likely tables and chairs will need to
be moved or broken down to make room for dancing. Talking of which, you’ll need someone on hand to do the moving or breaking down, as
well as taking delivery of the items and other odd jobs. But if an on-the-day coordinator comes with your venue, then you’re sorted!

If not, it’s an easy one to tick off your list. Again, consult your caterers first as often they provide a master of ceremonies to take control. Alternatively, you can bring someone in specifically to do the job. Most wedding planners offer a stand-alone service simply to manage nuptials on the day.
www.calumriddell.com
It’s worth meeting with a few potentials as you’ll be handing over a pretty important role. Bonus points if they’re familiar with the venue as they’ll have lots of tips and tricks to share with you! Finally, investigate whether there are any limits on what you can do in your chosen space. From noise restrictions and curfews (often dictated by local councils, not the venue) to regulations on exactly what you can use to hang your festoon lighting, some of these stipulations may be non-negotiable. But they can be worked around! Confetti, for example, is often a no-no, but biodegradable could be a solution, whilst sourcing heel protectors means your girls can still sport their stilettos. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Knowing his girlfriend Louise Smith’s love of coastlines, sunsets and sunrises, picking a proposal venue came naturally to Robin Ritchie: during an early morning walk at Aberdeen Beach, the high school sweethearts ‘stumbled upon’ a message in a bottle with a very important question inside it. Adding & Decor sparkles Accessories If you want to be on-trend for dressing your wedding venue this autumn, then the word on everyone’s lips is: vibe. The emphasis is on the atmosphere you want to create rather than colour schemes or themes – and some dramatic accessories to go with it!
Whether you’re having a micro-wedding or a lavish event, there’s no need to limit your décor for either. Even if you’re keeping guest numbers down, you can still go over the top by using introducing huge balloons or impressively large centrepieces to make a big impact on your friends and family as they enter the ballroom. It seems it’s the bigger the better when it comes to décor at the moment!

EVENT DECOR & ACCESSORIES
Your chosen venue may dictate some of your ideas, of course – either because it’s splendid baronial architecture screams dress me up like Downton Abbey or because it’s plain and simple – maybe a village hall – and gives you an almost blank canvas to work with. But do have a quick rummage through mags and on the Internet for a few ideas – be they over-the-top celeb style or environmentally friendly, back-to-nature looks. Also talk to your venue – the wedding managers can offer advice and keep you right about what you can or can’t do there. And if the trends don’t suit, start your own! First things first – think about what kind of impact you want to make on your guests as they arrive. Floral archways can not only look beautiful, but also help guide friends and family to the ceremony. Get a balloon specialist together with your florist and they can combine forces to create a spectacular entrance, which can double as a statement backdrop for photos. Balloons can be matched to the colour of bouquets and centrepieces, too. Why not transport it once everyone’s there to act as the altarpiece for your vows? And remember you can add trees – maybe entwined to make a canopy and illuminated by fairy lights; superb for darker wintry days or an evening wedding reception. Signage is also a handy piece of décor – beautify the venue whilst being practical into the bargain. Hot trend at the mo? Neon! Get your names up in lights, use it as a ‘hello’ to guests as they arrive – also useful for helping them find the entrance to an out-of-the-way location, and then add it to the lighting display for the evening reception. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Prefer something more understated and subtle? Take inspiration for your autumn/ winter wedding from the night sky… Decorate the ceiling with a blanket of twinkling ‘stars’ or create an indoor ‘firework’ display with lighting that cascades down over your guests’ heads. Add mini lampshades or chandeliers for a vintage vibe, or candles in jars for a relaxed and laidback feel. To add to the illusion, why not arrange for a projected backdrop? Think sandy beaches and blue seas or roaring log fires. Include some palm trees and the odd surfboard to enhance a summer effect; go for pine cones, holly berries and a giant fir tree for a wintry vibe. Make it a moving projection and you could have reindeer trotting by at your Christmas celebration or surfer dudes catching some waves! Or why not get some drone footage of your favourite places and take your family and friends on a tour of them with you? It could be a lovely way of punctuating the story of your romance for the speeches…

Just because colour schemes and themes aren’t necessarily ‘hot’ just now, doesn’t mean you can’t go down that route if it’s what you want. If you’re keen on a Scottish theme, then deck your chairs in tartan, use heather and thistles for your centrepieces, and accessorise with linen embroidered with stags’ heads, Saltires or Scottie dogs. Marrying in an old warehouse? Decorate it in brass lamps and lanterns, use bronze plates and cutlery, and add a steel drum or two as drinks tables. Maybe even organise a robot waiter to complete the mood. Remember that your ideas don’t need to be big or outlandish – or even Outlander-ish! The main focus should be on having the wedding that you want. And that needn’t be expensive. Check with your venue if there’s some décor included in the hire cost. They might provide www.byrhea.co.uk

If you’re going DIY for everything, find out what your venue has squirrelled away for weddings – chairs and so on. Ask round friends and family to see what skills they can share to help you create the perfect atmosphere for your big day. Perhaps they can turn their hand to flower arranging, make special ribbons or tablecloths for you, or carve a sign with your names on it – wonderful if you’re having an eco-friendly wedding and trying to bring nature in.

Don’t forget about the logistics, either – you need to know when you can get in to dress the venue, where to get keys from if required and if they have a ladder. Swing Time Entertainment From walking up the aisle to dancing the night away, you’re going to need smooth tunes throughout your big day. While obviously you’ll want music for dancing, there may be other points during the day where it’ll be the backdrop to events – like the lull between the wedding breakfast and evening reception. And you might want other entertainment to keep everyone amused, too. For tunes for the main event, check out our article on ceremonies for the top classical choices. But if you fancy something different, how about Abba’s I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do à la Muriel’s Wedding? And don’t forget to discuss the hymns if you’re having a religious ceremony. You might also want a piper to welcome the guests or ask the organist to play as they take their seats.

For some musical entertainment while your guests await you getting your first pics as a married couple, you could organise a choir or a barbershop quartet. Find out if they’ll do requests too, and you can get friends and family to suggest tunes when they RSVP. If you fancy something more interactive, how about a magician? They can include some audience participation for the odd card trick or two – but maybe not a good idea to have them make any guests disappear or saw anyone in half! They could also go round tables to entertain during the after-dinner coffees and cake. And speaking of the dinner… how about some singing waiters?

And, instead of photo booths – not so ‘in’ just now, how about a tarot card reader? For boogieing the night away, there are great ceilidh bands available who can keep the floor busy. They might call the dances or provide some demonstrators – and it’s always a giggle when everyone gets tangled up. Drop past one of their gigs to see how they operate before you pick the best band for you. Check with them about breaks and refreshments, too, and get them to liaise with the venue about delivering their instruments and equipment. It’s also a good idea to find out if there’s a time limit re noise so you don’t disturb the neighbours or other guests. During the band’s breaks, you might want the services of a DJ – or investigate wedding bands who might do a mix of music for you. Then there’s a silent disco – with everyone plugged into their own headset, literally dancing to their own tune!

Towering Cakes tiers
www.calumriddell.com
A major part of any wedding reception is the tradition of the happy couple cutting the cake. A great photo op for the guests, of course, but also a spotlight on the creative talents of the northeast’s finest bakers. These days though, cakes don’t just have to taste delicious – they’re also expected to be a feast for the eyes! The tradition of baked goods at weddings goes back to Roman times – it was bread then, but the groom would apparently eat a bit, then crumble the rest over the bride’s head. Not great for the hairdo, perhaps! Cakes date back to the Middle Ages and tipping it over the bride got a bit tricky – how do you do that when it’s filled with jam and buttercream? – so they opted for building them tall. The trick for the couple was to kiss over the top of stacked cake for luck. If they could manage, the marriage was expected to be a good one.

CAKES
Tiered cakes first appeared around the middle of the 1600s – and were propped up by mini broom handles! Stacking them all as one – in the way we do nowadays – was the brainwave of a French chef (whose name’s lost in the mists of time) as he thought the ‘build it up high’ ritual was awful. However, it’s unlikely he could have imagined the artistic extravaganzas of confection we see now… www.jonathanaddie.com
www.aberdeenphoto.com
While cake is still high on the wish list for weddings, the traditional three-tiered version is sometimes considered old-fashioned for the modern bridal couple. Want a dramatic centrepiece? Build it higher than those stacked cakes of the past and add a 3D effect. You can carve out the heart of it…in the shape of a heart if that tickles your fancy!

www.byrhea.co.uk
Can’t decide between chocolate, fruit or red velvet? Have all three! The layers can be different flavours and styles, marble effect or dyed all the colours of the rainbow. Alternatively, follow the latest celebrity trend and have lots of different cakes to suit everyone – including your guests who are gluten-free, have allergies or just prefer a cheesecake made of actual cheeses. And if you’re not sure about those details, ask your guests to note any allergies when they RSVP. It’ll make catering much easier!
www.calumriddell.com
Themed wedding? R2-D2 in cake form if you’re into Star Wars is possible, or you can get your baker to turn it into a Lego brick that pours out sweets when cut. Drip it in ‘blood’ for a Hallowe’en special or decorate with holly, ivy and tinsel for a wintry, nature-inspired, naked cake.

CAKES
Extending the cheese theme, you could go completely non-traditional and have a cheeseboard to die for instead. Engage the services of a good cheesemonger and mix old staples – Cheddar and Wensleydale – with Stinking Bishop and Manchego. If you want to stick with sweet tastes, there’s macarons – coloured to match your wedding – or cupcakes. Great with the after-dinner coffee!
Don’t forget to organise to meet your confectioner to see their ideas. You also need to fix a date for a taste test – it’s a tough task, but it has to be done! – so you can ensure you get the best flavour combinations possible. And if all the wild or wilder ideas don’t take your fancy? Go for a simple white-iced, tiered cake. It was good enough for the royals back in Victorian times, after all! ♥
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
Choice of decoration is as wide and varied as the flavours you can have. It’s possible to have edible silhouettes made of special moments you’ve caught on camera to put round the edges of your cake. You can add flowers – both real and the kind you can nibble – or go for one of the top 3D trends – a geode cake – for some added sparkle and wow factor.

CEREMONIES

You don’t have to be a musician to know that music creates a special atmosphere at a wedding ceremony. So, regardless of your faith, if any, let the tunes do the talking…
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
CEREMONIES
♥
197
Commonly, couples consider pre-ceremony background music then something more dramatic for the big entrance, as well as subtle tunes whilst signing the register and a final statement sound as the newlyweds head off. Simply remember that whilst music for a church wedding can be religious or secular, the pieces you choose for a civil ceremony must be non-religious. And do run your choice of tunes by the person marrying you. For religious weddings, organists and choirs aren’t hard to come by. In fact, your minister may know the organist’s repertoire for you to pour over. Do bear in mind, though, that most are amateurs so may not quite replicate the full orchestra piece you originally found! If an organist isn’t your bag or you want something extra, consider a string quartet, a harpist, a professional choir or a solo singer. Or if any of your nearest and dearest are musical, having them showcase their talent would be a lovely sentiment.

CEREMONIES
For civil weddings, licenced venues offer plenty of scope for large groups of musicians but remember that if you’re tying the knot in a registry office, space could be limited. A solo singer may be just the ticket but recorded music can work just as well. Now, for the fun part: picking your music! Here are some of our best suggestions…
The big entrance • Arrival of the Queen of Sheba – Handel • Here Comes the Bride from Lohengrin – Wagner • Grand March from Aida – Verdi • Hornpipe from Water Music – Handel • Trumpet Tune – Purcell • Trumpet Voluntary – Clarke • Wedding March from The Marriage of Figaro – Mozart • If it’s a religious wedding, your favourite hymn would work well here, too!
Signing the register • Adagio – Albinoni • Air on a G String – Bach • Air from Water Music – Handel • Canon – Pachelbel • Hired in a solo singer? Schubert’s Ave Maria is perfect for this part of the ceremony.

Scotland’s most popular ceremony types A religious ceremony is for you if it reflects your faith. But bear in mind that if your partner’s not from the same background, they may need to undertake some additional lessons, etc. So, get your plans in place in plenty of time! Civil
ceremonies
are
simple
and
straightforward, conducted by a registrar in a place largely of your choice. Likewise, independent civil ceremonies can be held almost anywhere. They give you the option to write the script and weave in religious or spiritual content as you see fit. Belief ceremonies can be humanist (conducted by a humanist celebrant and often featuring rituals like handfasting or ring warming) or interfaith. Led by an interfaith celebrant, this type of ceremony brings together people from different religious or cultural backgrounds by honouring rituals and words from both sides to reflect the beliefs of the couple as a whole. ♥
The big exit
• Crown Imperial – Walton • Finale from Symphony No 1 – Vierne • Prelude and Fugue in B – Dupré • Toccata – Widor • Wedding March – Mendelssohn • The Purcell and Clarke pieces from the entrance options would also be a great choice here. www.grpianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Unless you’re planning your wedding to be all under one roof, you’ll need to think about how you’re going to get to the ceremony, then the reception… and maybe a getaway car for jetting off on honeymoon!
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
If you’re following tradition, you’ll need at least three cars to get the bridal party to and fro: one for the bride and her father, who’ll be swapped for the groom (hopefully!) on the way back; one for the groom and his best man, who’ll share with the bridesmaids; and the last for the mother-of-thebride and the bridesmaids that’ll take the proud parents of both couples to the wedding breakfast.
involved in your nuptials, just organise the cars

Bond look. And, depending on taste, there’s
accordingly. Parents of the groom, ushers and guests usually make their own way there. As to what you use for transport, well… A groom and his best man could choose a classic sports car – perhaps a Porsche 911 or Maserati; maybe even an Aston Martin if they fancy the James always a Harley Davidson.

Just remember to factor in a contingency plan for the lovely, unpredictable weather in our corner of Scotland! Want something a bit different? Camper vans are very popular still. Rural wedding? How about arranging a lift on a tractor? There’s always the choice of a classic fire engine should you want to honour a family connection… Of course, a gorgeous Rolls Royce or Daimler is perfect, too. Go for an older model if you want to match it to, say, a 1920s-style bash. Or go full stretch limo for the ultimate in luxury – pink if you want to make a bit of a statement.

Check out the credentials and insurance of whoever you pick to chauffeur you around, and ask if they can lay on something to calm the nerves en route – a spot of bubbly and some music, perhaps. Don’t forget your guests if your wedding is going to be out of the way. So that they can all find the venue and not have to worry about who’s designated driver, arrange a bus (bright red, London double decker anyone?) or a coach to get them there. A great way for them to make friends on the way, too. And the getaway car? Well, if you’re going ecofriendly, there’s always a tandem…! ♥

Capture Recording the day the Day Photography There are so many ways to capture your wedding day, from the traditional photographing of each guest as they make their grand entrance to the more modern, tech-focused approaches – GIFs and all! We find out what’s on offer in the northeast and suggest how you can best work with the relevant suppliers to make the most of your day… and spend!

Say cheese – or not! Traditional wedding photography generally consists of staged, formal colour photographs where you’re asked to pose and, you guessed it, say cheese! The sequence of the wedding day is categorically captured – the scene setting of a stunning venue, each half of the couple excitedly getting ready in the morning, the romantic ceremony… and so on. You’ll find this to be a simple, straightforward and consistent way of recording the day, giving the photographer the opportunity to create the perfect space and capture everyone’s best pose.

Although this is still a popular option in the northeast, we’re currently enjoying an endless wave of candid photography with snappers stealing shots of the happy couple and their guests without asking them to pose or even being noticed. This usually results in a set of creative and authentic shots, catching people at their most relaxed and natural, soaking up those fleeting moments that just can’t be planned.
More of a contemporary spin First-look photos: How special would it be to capture the look on the faces of your nearest and dearest as they get a sneak peek of their bride- or groomto-be, ready to say ‘I do’ before the big reveal? Take two: Some couples aren’t up for popping off during the drinks reception to get their posed newlywed shots. Instead, they’re saving it for the following day. This approach isn’t for everyone, of course. Getting primped and preened two days in a row may not be your idea of fun but, for others, it’s a fabulous opportunity to relive the big day all over again… almost instantly! It also gives you the opportunity to be present for the whole of the wedding day and take full advantage of the entertainment, chatter and nibbles at the drinks reception! This means no time pressure during the photoshoot so you’ll be relaxed and full of natural happiness from the day before. No fake smiles required! Tick the box before you begin: A blend of the above trends, some unconventional couples are making their romantic shots together a priority pre-ceremony. Here, you can tick a first-look photo off the list and know that you’ll be able to maximise time mingling with your guests after you say ‘I do’. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Take advantage of tech: Photographic geniuses in the northeast have a whole host of exciting options with which to enhance their end results and ensure your snaps stand out from the crowd. If you’ve rented a hugely picturesque stately home, how about aerial shots of the ceremony and drinks reception via drone? And for an industrial or blank canvas venue, a smoke bomb or sparklers could make those traditional family photos a little more fun. You may think it could look like a messy blur but, remember, your snapper isn’t just a photography expert – they work wonders in the editing suite, too! On that note, if you’re a lover of classic black and white prints, why not ask for an extra set of snaps to this effect?
Funky add-ons

The last five years have seen the rise – and fall – of photo booths and, although some have upped their game with creative new angles (an old school-style booth with strips of black and white Polaroids as opposed to a pop-up station with props, for example), exciting new attractions are afoot. Why not take a leaf out of the book of our feature couple, Louise and Robin, who hired in a GIF booth? The unmanned station creates fun, animated GIFs that are sent to you straight away via text. So, within seconds, you and your guests can download them and stick them up on social media, complete with the wedding hashtag! Don’t worry about scouring Facebook for all of them after the event, though – you’re likely to get access to an online gallery and/or a set of digital files.

Does this sound like it’s right up your street? Just don’t forget to think about the following: How strong is the venue’s WiFi signal? If it’s not the most
reliable, consider sourcing a Wi-Fi hotspot device.
Is there access to power? If not,
or if you want to set the booth up outside, make sure to ask your GIF booth supplier for a battery pack.
Do you want a theme? Although the
station doesn’t require a backdrop, you can choose to have one. Could work well for Hallowe’en or Christmas themed nuptials!
Or a brand? Want to stick your www.simonclubb.com
wedding hashtag or date onto the finished GIFs? Not a problem – logo or text overlays are totally possible!

On film While you’re making memories to last a lifetime, why not make sure you can share them for generations to come? Think of the joy that’ll come from your children and grandchildren seeing the celebration, while you remind yourself of your wedding.
Anyway, back to the job at hand! Firstly, check out any trends you fancy before hunting down your perfect northeast film-maker. You might want a traditional wedding video or you may opt for an informal, documentary style – a fly-on-the-wall catching your guests unawares. It’s a lovely way to capture moments that you’re likely to miss in the madness of the big day. www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

As well as raising a smile in later years, getting your wedding filmed is a great excuse for bringing the bridal team back together for an extra thank-you party after the confetti’s all gone and your honeymoon is a pleasant memory. Add popcorn and fizz, and you’ve got the perfect first anniversary bash!

Like in photography, drones are popular just now for producing films from unimaginable angles. This offers extra flexibility and variety, and is great for an outdoor wedding to capture the whole venue – landscape, décor, architecture… Check that your chosen videographer has the appropriate license and insurance for this, though.
www.simonclubb.com
If you’re wondering who to pick, your photographer might do films as part of their packages or be able to suggest someone they’ve worked with before – great for coordinating and planning. Ask your venue, too, if they can recommend someone and about any restrictions they have for drones. Added bonus? If they’ve worked at the location before, they already know all the best places to take shots from. Get the cost sorted out before signing up, especially if your budget is tight. There’s always wriggle room within what you can afford.

And don’t forget to ask about the format you’ll get the film in – USB stick, DVD with presentation box – and how long the editing process will take. If you want special effects, discuss what you’d like up front and if this’ll affect delivery time. Then all you’ll need to do is to sit back and enjoy the show!
And remember… However you choose to record your big day, here are some top tips for working with those all-important suppliers…
www.jonathanaddie.com
Let them get to know you: Although you’ll have chosen them because you love their style, they still need to know what you’re looking to achieve and how it fits with what they do. Ask plenty of questions and tell them exactly what you expect from them. Every little detail helps because the more they know, the better they can make the story of your wedding. Personalise: Got some ideas up your sleeve that are a little different from the norm? Seen a videography style you particularly like – or dislike? Is there a specific shot you’re just desperate to have captured? Then share it!
www.grpianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.aberdeenphoto.com
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
www.janiebarclay.com www.jenniferriddell.co.uk
Don’t be afraid to let them in on your personal life (keen rugby fans or have a beloved pet joining you on the day?), as it could give them fun ideas about how to get creative and incorporate your couple style into the snaps or film. Confide in them: Got a niggle you just can’t shake? Whether it’s a personal insecurity or anxiousness about how some of your guests may be on camera, confiding in your supplier is the best way to make sure they’re fully prepared on the day and able to do their best to limit your concerns.
www.aboynephotographics.com
Communication is key: Most photographers and videographers meet couples at least once before the big day and sometimes more frequently. If geographical and time restraints don’t allow for that, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep in touch. Drop them an e-mail with any special details or altered arrangements, and create a Pinterest board to share inspo as you go. But avoid Pinterest overload: Following on from the above, as much as we all love Pinterest for fine-tuning the style of wedding you want, it should be used carefully when it comes to photography.

To the untrained eye, everything that’s been pinned looks the same but, actually, only some

shots are from genuine weddings and others will be from an impossible-to-recreate professionally styled shoot. So, Pinterest is a great basis for establishing your preferred vibe or theme, but beware of trying to replicate a whole host of photos from someone else’s shoot! Give them a heads-up: There’s nothing worse than not being in the right place at the right time so make sure you give these special suppliers who’ll be around for the majority of the wedding as much of an idea of the flow of the day as possible, from directions to a remote venue to providing a list of must-have shots. In addition, the amount of time couples want to spend taking their newlywed snaps during the drinks reception can vary from a quick ten minutes to more than an hour – and your photographer isn’t a mind reader! Discuss your plans and expectations in advance so that everyone’s on the same page. ♥

HONEYMOON
Flights Honeymoon of Fancy
Honeymoons these days are as individual as you are… The ‘rules’ of a luxurious holiday on golden sands by a sapphire-blue ocean have been ripped up and the world now really is your oyster. So, what takes your fancy for that all-important first getaway as a married couple?
There is, of course, the question of timing. If you can’t escape for a long trip immediately – due to funds or work, then a mini-moon is just the ticket! A weekend away at a luxury hotel may suit, but there are exotic locations you can zoom off to for a short break – how about Zanzibar? Or opt for a new trend – the micro-moon – which is basically lots of long weekends over a year, giving you the excuse to visit a wide variety of exciting new places. At the other extreme, how about a mega-moon? If the cash is there and you can get the time off, mix it up and do a world tour, covering as many continents as you can manage. Start in the southern hemisphere and work your way north or go east to west. And the more sumptuous the accommodation, the better! Prefer something active? Why not climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Or learn a new skill – sailing or cookery, perhaps. Maybe you want to be in the driving seat, so there’s always a road trip. Go where you want when you want – and enjoy being behind the wheel of a nippy roadster or your own camper van. Want to give something back to the earth? Then try a sustainable hotel and help with a beach clean-up. For reducing the air miles, you can always choose somewhere close to home – we are blessed in the northeast with some stunning scenery of our own! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
WHAT TO DO NEXT
♥
223
After Party'sthe Over event
But the to-do list isn’t finished just yet! Not only do you have to make sure the rented tux or kilts get back to where they belong; you also need a support team in place if you’re jetting off on honeymoon straight after the post-reception fireworks! As part of your super-duper action plan for your wedding, don’t forget to make a checklist of ‘afters’ and assign the jobs to those you trust. If you’re keeping your dress, find someone who can clean and box it professionally to keep it at its best over time. Enlist the maid of honour and best man to return hired outfits, and make sure you’ve got someone looking after your home and any pets while you’re off on honeymoon. For security, your gift list supplier can keep presents until your return, or get someone to house-sit if not. Don’t forget about all the legal details! Get passports, bank cards, driving licences and any other item with your name on it changed in plenty of time before travelling. And, if you’re merging
households – whether that’s buying a place together or one of you moving in to the other’s place, check with a mortgage advisor what’s required. Last, but not least, update (or write!) wills to reflect your new married status. With a bit of thought beforehand, you can rest easy that your bouquet has been taken to be preserved, the venue is cleaned up and any personal items retrieved, your luggage is where it needs to be… When you get back? Write those thank-you notes – or do it before you jet off and ask a friend to post them. Then collect your photos and video, arrange a get-together to show them off and relive the most special day in your life! ♥
