INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Spring-Summer issue of the Grampian Wedding Directory It’s difficult to know how to start this introduction to the new Spring-Summer issue of GWD in light of where we all find ourselves during this unprecedented time. Life is on pause for the foreseeable future, which sadly includes weddings. To those of you who’ve had to postpone your big day, this would have been the one action you couldn’t have planned for nor anticipated. We offer our heartfelt sympathies for those having to move to another date – which may not be in 2020 – and we also spare more than a thought for those who work in the industry and for whom weddings are the mainstay of their business. Once we all get back to normal, life will have changed and we will be very busy catching up on all the things we’ve not been able to do. Planning a wedding for the end of 2020 and beyond is still very much allowed though, and at least GWD can continue to help with you with this! We again cover four real-life weddings, with our cover story being one of the very last before events were restricted then suspended. We also have four mood boards to inspire you, courtesy of our RGU placement student, Stevie Leask, and competitions to enter online before the end of September. We’ll get through this challenging time and normal life will return – along with lots of wonderful weddings. I’m sure we’ll appreciate them all the more. Any help you think we can give you, simply get in touch and we’ll do what we can. Enjoy this new issue of GWD and, above all, stay safe.

“Our first date – ‘just a few drinks’ – resulted in us chatting and drinking wine all night long! We had an instant connection and were both already excited about the future. But that future wasn’t just John and I – we come as a package of three. And John knew that when he proposed, he’d want to include our gorgeous fur baby, Willow. So, he had a dog tag made with an engraving that asked me to marry him. And when I looked up from reading it, he was down on one knee. It was just the sweetest proposal and, of course, Willow was part of the wedding! Our first priority was the date because we wondered if we could plan our wedding in just five months, making our already booked holiday to Australia our honeymoon! Turns out we could – and we managed to get all of the suppliers on our wish list, too! With March nuptials, we knew we couldn’t rely on the weather so wanted a venue that’d have ample photo opportunities regardless. It also
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
needed to be big enough for our hefty guest list, and Meldrum House was perfect. We filled the venue with flowers and greenery, and tried to include our favourite colour – orange – without making it autumnal. Our table names were Australian places and our favours even came all the way from the other side of the world. To see everything come together was amazing. The night before we tied the knot, we had a private dinner for 20 at Meldrum House – which included a fun-filled game of Mr & Mrs. Everyone stayed over, which meant the wedding morning was very relaxed. When hair and make-up arrived, then the photographer and florist popped in, it just felt like a big group of friends. It was fab, but also so nice and calm. My gown was designed by Stephanie Allin and I picked it on my first day of dress shopping. I’d had no idea what I wanted and was very excited about
potentially trying on lots of styles in lots of shops. But as soon as this one was on, I got ‘that feeling.’ I wanted a very simple look so opted for earrings that matched the pattern of my jacket and flowers in my hair – can you tell I love flowers!? We opted for a humanist ceremony and chose Rachel because we’d been at a previous wedding of hers and loved how personal she made it. She really captured their personalities and did the same for us – we were over the moon and had so many touching comments about it. Afterwards, we opened our free bar and served canapés – from haggis bonbons to Italian-style sharing platters – as well as our cake of cheese, with oatcakes and chutney. We wanted to give our guests a choice for their meal so offered at least three options for each course, then topped them up in the evening with a ‘pimp your chips’ station during the band break!
We topped our guests tummies up in the evening with a ‘pimp your chips’ station during the band break!
On that note, we chose our band after loving their upbeat vibe at a previous wedding. They got everyone in the mood for a good time and really kept the dance floor full. They also learned our first dance song – Amazed by Lonestar. That was probably our highlight: everyone we love around us as we danced. But hearing the words, “I can now pronounce you husband and wife” does come a close second!" ♥

GETTING STARTED
The Guest List Planning
There are so many elements to wedding planning that it’s only natural to be overwhelmed. And if you’re not? Well done you… but there’s still time! Either way, GWD is bursting with info, advice, tips and tricks – and, if that’s not enough, check out our website for more. So, let’s tackle one of the first and biggest planning obstacles… the guest list!

Whether you’re becoming Mr and Mrs, Mrs and Mrs or Mr and Mr, we know compiling that allimportant guest list will be a daunting task. From you determining your venue size to considering budget constraints to negotiating family politics, there’s a lot to think about (and a few more people to consult than you may expect!) when getting started.
So, how about making it a little easier for yourself? Follow our seven steps for guest list success… Step one: Remember that others are involved The guest list is ultimately the responsibility of the happy couple, but it’s customary – especially if they’re helping fund it – to allocate a number of invitations to each set of parents, so include them as soon as you can. Step two: Tackling tricky situations Often a controversial one, it’s a good idea to decide early on whether or not to invite children. There’s no right or wrong here – it’s whatever feels best and most natural to you as a couple. If you do include children, liaise with the parents in plenty of time regarding dietary requirements and consider sourcing something to keep them occupied on the day. And if it’s to be a kid-free zone? There are super-cute yet straight-to-thepoint poems you can include in your invitations! Meanwhile, separations, new partners and family rifts can be further challenges when compiling your wedding guest list, so take a deep breath and use lots of tact and diplomacy!

The mere mention
of a wedding
spreadsheet bringing you out in a cold sweat? Then hire
a professional and
Don’t forget to make a reserve list – handy if any of your ‘first tier’ guests can’t make it! Step four: Don’t worry about the perfect balance Whilst it would be quite nice to have the same number of guests on each side, sometimes it’s just not possible. Some of us have larger groups of family or friends than others, and it may be that one of you has the majority of day guests, whilst the other has the lion’s share in the evening. Don’t worry – do what suits you! Step five: Note wedding etiquette
experienced planner
You may have chosen to have all-day guests only (if your venue is remote or people have far to travel, perhaps) or a mix of day and evening invitees. Remember, though, that anyone invited to the ceremony should be at the reception, too.
through the process.
Step six: The mighty spreadsheet
to help you glide
Step three: Your wish list Time to put pen to paper! Draft an all-inclusive list that starts with immediate family and the wedding party. From there, add close friends and relatives. Then look to your wider circle – extended family, other friends and colleagues, for example. You now have a good starting point from which to edit down if required due to budget, venue, etc.
Another daunting task but, as your wedding planning continues, having a spreadsheet (or something similar) full of all your important information will be invaluable. Add your guest list with their addresses, then record when you’ve sent invitations and had replies. You can also save dietary requirements, transport needs and song requests here as applicable. Your spreadsheet will make life easier when it comes to sending thank-you notes, too. Just make a note of what you got from whom as and when your presents arrive. Step seven: Invite them! Got a final guest list? Congratulations! Now the fun part: inviting them to celebrate with you! This means sourcing a talented stationery supplier – of which we have many in the northeast – or setting up your very own wedding website. www.iskabirniephotography.co.uk
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
A ‘wedsite’ will give your guests instant access to all the information they need and, most importantly, offer them a quick and convenient way to accept or decline your invitation. Keep it simple with the need-to-know info or go all out with the story of how you met, a link to your honeymoon contributions page and an introduction to the bridal party! For many, though, nothing can quite replace receiving a beautifully crafted wedding invitation, especially one that gives a little clue to the style or theme of the big day! Make sure to send them at least two or three months ahead of your wedding date, but certainly no later than six weeks before. Consider including maps and accommodation info too, if needed. And finally… The guest list is a pivotal part of planning but there are lots of other factors too! So, if you’ve ticked off the invitations, get cracking on some of these:
Favours: Lottery ticket? Nip of whisky? Token for the bar? Charity pin? Traditional tablet? We’ve seen them all, so take your pick!
Gift lists: From honeymoon funds to picking pretty products for your home to requesting charitable donations, what’s the best gift for you as a couple?
Insurance: As the Scouts say, be prepared! Wedding insurance is an inexpensive investment that, should the worst happen, has immeasurable worth.
Wedding planners: The mere mention of a wedding spreadsheet bringing you out in a cold sweat? Then hire a professional and experienced planner to help you glide through the process.
Dance instruction: The thought of a first dance also cold sweat-inducing? Then get some lessons, pronto! Just one session could provide some killer moves that’ll wow your guests! ♥

In the first year in its brand-new home, Your Wedding Exhibition (YWE) at P&J Live (TECA) was certainly a success with more than 170 exhibitors, totally on-trend fashion shows and lots of extra goodies! So, with 2021 expected to be very big in the wedding world, we thought it’d be the perfect time to remind you just how fabulous (and vital within the planning process!) wedding exhibitions are…

1. Inspo galore: No matter how many hours you devote to scrolling through Pinterest, nothing compares to seeing things in person – and meeting the people who can turn them into reality for you. It’s also a great opportunity to confirm what you don’t want. 2. Check out the trends: With hundreds of suppliers in one place, it’ll be easy to spot what’s hot right now, and for next year. It’s worth asking exhibitors what other couples are asking for, too – you could pick up some great tips and ideas. 3. Taste tests: Need we say more!? From cake and candy carts to Pimms and prosecco, it’s best to go with a bit of an appetite… and a bit of a thirst! 4. Ask, ask, ask: Take advantage of asking questions that’ll get an immediate answer – far more efficient than waiting for an e-mail reply or leaving a voicemail. Ask about the products and services, their experience and their general advice. And remember, there’s no such thing as a silly question! 5. On-the-day benefits: Whilst there’s no guarantee, it’s likely many suppliers will have some sort of special offer for a show. Whether it’s a reduced price or adding something extra to your booking, it could be too good to pass up! If you’re on a tight budget, though, or aren’t 100% sure, don’t feel pressured to take up the offer on the day – ask if there’s an expiry date and take it from there.
P.S. Breaking news – the dates are set for 2021! Pop 16 and 17 January 2021 in your diary. Back at TECA for year two, YWE will be bursting with all the wedding inspo you could dream of! ♥

HENS & STAGS
Letting Hens & Stags Loose! Whether you fancy hitting the hotspots, taking a mini break, a spot of pampering or Segway-ing round the countryside, the northeast has an amazing range of diverse ways to celebrate your last days of singledom. We take a look at a few here‌

It’s basically a question of taste – and make sure the troops know what that is before you set them loose on the plans! If your preferences are for a glammed-up night out, then start with a meal out at one of the northeast’s wonderful restaurants. Why not book a private room and arrange a bespoke menu with fizz just for you? Afterwards, go paint the town red (or maybe pink, if you don’t want to go too wild) and hit a few late night venues for some cocktails. For added fun, learn to make them yourselves – new skills always come in handy!

HENS & STAGS
Want something a little more adventurous? How about a hens vs. stags mini Olympics? Zoom around on Segways; try out some archery or clay pigeon shooting; Zorb down the river (more challenging than a hill); or enjoy go-karting. Tot up the scores as you go along and round the day off with a barbecue and drinks – perfect for the summer months.
Alternatively, organise a workshop of some kind – paint your own ceramics; flower arranging – handy if you’re doing your own; salsa or ceilidh dancing lessons for the reception… The list’s extensive.
Up for an intellectual challenge instead? How about an escape room? Split into teams and channel The Crystal Maze vibe to complete tasks and find the elusive key to freedom… Remember prizes for the winners!

Maybe you’d like to get away from all the planning stress, so why not have a spa weekend? If your venue has one, you might get a great deal for some glorious sessions of pampering, followed by a dip in the pool or relaxing in the Jacuzzi® with a bottle of champers on ice. Need an excuse for this one? You’re getting your beauty prep done ahead of the big day, of course! And there’re packages for everyone to enjoy.

Give your top team a list of do’s and don’ts so they organise events you’re comfortable with, and tell them who your VIPs are. It’s a great way to bring together your support squad ahead of the main event, so they get to know and bond with one another.

HEADER “Mark is a huge romantic and proposed by ticking off two items off of my bucket list – a trip to Venice and a yellow diamond. He’d been working secretly with jewellers in Dubai to design my ring and it was absolutely perfect. Picking the date was easy. We got engaged on 2 November 2017 and looked to see when it next landed on a weekend – it did just that in 2020! Venue-wise, we found it quite easy. As a stylist, I have a good understanding of the inner workings of most of our local venues… but instantly discounted every one I’d been to with a bride or for a photo shoot because I wanted everything to be a surprise! This whittled it down nicely and we felt that Meldrum, with its mix of modern and traditional décor, fantastic food options and flawless bedrooms, was ideal. We brought the outside in with sumptuous floral arrangements and fantastic geometric-style plinths, and focused on strong navy, gold and burgundy tones.
Real Lif
There was lots of DIY, largely focused on our passion for travel. We named our tables after the places we’ve been in the past ten years and, as a surprise, my mum made a postbox covered in postcards from everywhere we’ve visited. She also decorated our guest book table and the bar area, whilst Mark’s mum baked the most amazing shortbread for our favours. I even ended up going a bit of DIY with the bridesmaid dresses, altering the neckline, sleeve and length to make sure they were comfortable… and great for dancing! When it came to my own dress, I’d always known I wanted something classic and timeless but was really open-minded. In the midst of booking appointments at boutiques, I noticed Eleganza Sposa was holding a trunk show (when a designer takes over a shop and brides try on new season dresses that aren’t yet in production). My bridesmaid spotted one tucked in the corner, which the rep said hadn’t been hugely popular due to its simplistic design. It was made with mikado (a very heavy, sturdy fabric, which I love) but it was strapless, which I wasn’t so keen on. Open to anything, I tried it and before I even stepped out of the dressing room I was shouting: “I’ve found it!” www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

The transaction was done there and then. To this day I still don’t know if the dress actually went into production – but that makes it feel a little more special. I opted for a red lip and kept my accessories simple with silver tones, including the most amazing pair of sparkly Jimmy Choo’s! My grandmother was keen for me to wear her pearl necklace but it didn’t work with the dress. So, I saw it as an excuse to get creative and worked with RedRocks Jewellery to incorporate the pearls into beautiful statement earrings. Mark loves dressing up in a kilt and wanted a tartan he could wear again with a variety of jackets or waistcoats. He went for Midnight Pride and had his party in the same kilt but different jackets to make sure he stood out. Our wedding day was incredible. Laughing, dancing and celebrating with our family and friends was a huge highlight, as was our ceremony. And being foodies, we wanted to treat our guests well! There was a range of light but tasty canapés and a choice of three items per course for the wedding breakfast – we wanted our guests to enjoy looking through a menu and picking what they wanted.

From the beginning, I asked Mark to pick a song for the first dance and surprise me on the night. So, he went for Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. It’s my ultimate favourite song and the lyrics mean a lot to me. He did good! For the rest of the evening, we had Phase4. Throughout wedding planning, we maintained that we didn’t want ‘typical wedding music’ and they blew us away with acoustic and upbeat versions of Stereophonics, Oasis and Green Day. Best Bridal Dressed… Wedding dress worries? Don’t stress! We’re on hand to keep you on the straight and narrow throughout the whole process of picking ‘The One’. Read on for our top tips and info on the latest trends… The styles Fashions are constantly changing – but old wedding favourites are still around and even come back into vogue every so often. If you’re looking to be bang on trend, though, here are a few of the hotly tipped styles for 2020… Floral gowns – printed or embroidered – are perfect for a spring/summer wedding, or glam up a ballgown with ruffles for a dramatic, 3D effect. For stunning necklines, try one-shoulder gowns or a sultry, deep V-neck. Exaggerated sleeves are also popular – the bigger the better!

If the thought of a dress makes you screw your nose up, then indulge in gorgeous tailored trousers or a sophisticated jumpsuit. Jazz the outfit up with a fitted blazer – or perhaps a suit is more your style? Add a long coat for a dash of sophistication and swish. www.aberdeenphoto.com www.aboynephotographics.com
Whatever the trends, remember that the choice is yours. Go totally traditional if you want; mix it up with coloured underskirts or embroidered bodices; wear a mini skirt if it’s more you; or dress up as a fairy princess if that floats your boat. The only restrictions are your imagination – and your budget. Speaking of which…
The prep work Before you hit the shops, work out your limit for the perfect wedding ensemble. Remember to factor in accessories too – shoes, veil/tiara/hat, bag, jewellery, lingerie and so on. If you have a figure in mind, it’ll be so much easier when you talk to the northeast’s wedding experts as they’ll be able to steer you towards dresses or suits in your price range. Also, do your homework. Browse GWD for ideas, have fun looking at everything from the sleek and simple to the outrageous and outlandish online, and take note of styles, fabrics and detailing that grab you or fit your theme/colours. Check out Pinterest and other bridal magazines, too. A little bit of window shopping won’t hurt either! Create a scrapbook of pics – online or in a good oldfashioned book – to add to when you find something new. Ask family and friends for suggestions from weddings they’ve attended, too. Just don’t get so wrapped up in this part of the planning that you forget to find out who stocks which designer so you can make a list of places to visit!
The shopping www.byrhea.co.uk
www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk
Still got the jitters? Or maybe you’re not a keen shopper and just the idea of trying on dresses makes your palms sweaty and your mouth dry. No problem – call all your ‘heroes’ and get a small but exclusive support team to go with you for moral support. You could make an event of the experience, mixing in a spot of lunch with the girls. It’ll give you a chance to refuel – it’s hungry work trying on wedding outfits! – and talk over what you’ve seen so far.

However you choose to go about dress hunting, take note of these points: 1. Book appointments! Especially at weekends, boutiques are busy. If you can fit in a slot during the week, so much the better as it’ll be quieter and you’ll get more time with your expert. 2. Tell the assistant when and where you’re getting hitched. Then they can advise you on the best fabrics – tulle for summer, velvet for winter – and length of dress/veil. If you’re getting married halfway up a hill, a six-foot train might get in the way. 3. Underwear. Keep it neutral so it doesn’t shine through the material – very distracting! 4. Shoes. A pair of heels about the height you expect to wear is ideal – unless you’ve already bought the Jimmy Choo’s you’ve been coveting for ages… in which case, take them along! 5. Absolutely no fake tan! You don’t want to mark dresses others are going to try on and it won’t charm the salespeople if they have to arrange to have dresses cleaned after your visit. www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

6. Keep the lines of communication open… Tell your expert how you feel in a dress and listen to their advice in return. They’ll have an experienced eye for what works and could suggest a style or fit that you hadn’t considered, but it suits you to a T. Remember they want you to look a million dollars just as much as you do.

7. Be kind to yourself! It may be that you’re one of the lucky ones who finds that perfect dress in the first shop they visit. But if you don’t, it’s not a problem. Take your time – and revisit shops later in the season because they may get new stock and, magically, the ideal frock is there!

The bespoke option If you absolutely can’t find an off-the-peg piece of perfection, then you can always go bespoke and check out our fabulous local designers and dressmakers. It could even be more cost-effective for you as they’ll have ways and means of getting discounts and deals on materials through their contacts. Make sure you take time to speak to potential dressmakers to find out if you’re comfortable working with them as you’ll be seeing a lot of them and it’s quite an intimate process.
www.etiquettebridal.co.uk
Once you find someone who fits that bill and gets your design ideas, they’ll produce a sketch for you (instant beautiful memento of your wedding day!) and plan the fittings. Don’t forget to discuss embellishments and decorative flashes that are within your budget, and you’ll need to give yourself a bit longer to have everything ready in time for the big day.
The Dress you wear on your Wedding Day is the most important dress you will ever wear. This is why at Etiquette Bridal we hold a wide variety of styles and silhouettes to help find you the perfect match between Dress and Personality – your dress should after all show off the ‘best version of you!’

The little details Even if you buy a dress or suit from a shop, you’ll still need to allow time for at least two fittings – six weeks before, then just beforehand. And remember to ask about deposits – how much and when to pay them – and how soon before your wedding you’ll need to settle the bill. It’s also worth asking the best way to store and look after your prize possession before, during and after the ceremony.

If you spill something on your dress – perhaps wine, sponge or dab it. Don’t wipe!
• • •
Ditto with your bouquet – watch out for floral dye jobs that you hadn’t bargained on.
Stop your heels tearing the fabric if they get caught by getting some protectors. Confetti can stain the material, especially if our lovely Scottish weather turns wet, so check your dress after it’s been thrown. Watch out for sticky hands – cake, chocolate, etc. After the big day, take it to a specialist dry cleaner if you’re keeping it so that it’s pristine and boxed correctly.

The finishing touches Found ‘The One’? Then it’s time to think accessories. The little extras make all the difference… First of all, what about jewellery? Your beloved may be planning to spring a wedding morning surprise with a gift of earrings or a necklace, but it’s good to have shiny baubles ready to complete your look. If you’re wearing your hair up, some dangly sparklers might be just the ticket – you can match the stone to your theme. For neckwear, add a stylish choker if you have a plain neckline, or a simple string of pearls. Perhaps a relative could lend you a family heirloom for the occasion? Something old and something borrowed would be instantly covered too. Want to go for dramatic and dazzling? How about a tiara? Depending on your taste, you could wear a tall one to give yourself added height or a more modest version that can also hold a veil in place. www.jonathanaddie.com

Speaking of veils, remember there are many varieties to choose from: Blusher, elbow, ballerina, cathedral, tiered, birdcage, fingertip – or mantilla for a Spanish-style flourish! Just discuss this with your hairstylist so they can factor that in and talk to your dress specialist about the best one to complement your gown. You don’t want one that restricts your movement or detracts from the rest of your outfit. Hot celeb trend this year? Statement veils! Why not follow Mrs Bieber’s lead and embroider lyrics from your song into your veil to personalise the fine details? If you’re not a fan of veils, you could go for a beautifully embroidered cap for a vintage feel or a wee floral wreath if your vibe is more boho. Or ask to have flowers woven through your hairdo for a natural effect. Wearing a trouser suit? A jaunty hat could top off your outfit in style! Moving from the top to the middle, get yourself decent lingerie. Though it’s not visible (we hope!), its impact is of vital importance. Visit the experts and get yourself kitted out properly with a bra that enhances your look. Take your dress or

suit with you if you can so you can get the full effect. Then indulge in some gorgeous extras – knickers, suspenders, garters – to finish the look, with tights or stockings to match. And you might as well stock up on something sexy for the honeymoon too! Just ensure that you’re comfortable in it all so you don’t end up wriggling around and spoiling your day. Lastly, shoes. You want a heel height that’s comfortable to wear all day and doesn’t catch your dress – falling flat on your face is not the kind of pic you want for the gag reel! Also, make sure they’re wide enough to allow for expansion if it gets hot. As for colour, go for classic white or pearl, or be adventurous and dye them to match your jewellery. How about a patterned sole? For the evening, to relieve tired tootsies, you can always bling up some trainers with sequins and glitter so you can dance the night away in style and comfort. And for the little essentials – phone, lipstick, hankies – a clutch bag is handy, or ask for pockets in your dress.
Whatever you choose,
make sure you can breathe and stand up/sit down in it. Comfort is key to full confidence so you glow all day! ♥

Bridesmaids Maids and Men Few bridesmaids and bridesmen will be thrilled with walking down the aisle with lots of frills and fuss. They’re far more likely to hanker after something sophisticated, glamorous and – above all – flattering! Even better if they can wear it again, too. As such, there’s lots to take into consideration when searching for their outfits… And that’s especially the case if you’re asking them to pay… which is totally okay, by the way! Anything goes with weddings these days and, whether or not you want to splash out on your attendants’ attire, you’ll be fine as long as you set out the ground rules in plenty of time.

BRIDESMAIDS
For the ladies, specialist bridal shops with sections for bridesmaids are a good place to start, as are the evening wear departments in your favourite fashion stores. There are no hard and fast rules about matching now. From complete coordination to totally different outfits (consider giving them the same bouquets, for example, to ensure they’re set apart from the rest of the guests), anything goes. Many couples go for something in between – dresses in the same shade or fabric, with the style chosen by the wearer. Altering and customising is absolutely an option here. If you’re buying off the peg, could you add sashes to accentuate the waist and emphasise your colour scheme? Or a bit of delicate detailing – flowers, bows or diamantés, for example?
www.aboynephotographics.com www.aberdeenphoto.com
Also think about hairstyles and accessories, as well as shoes, jewellery and bags. You may be happy for them to choose and wear their own, or it might be an idea to give a little guidance. For ultimate control, of course, you could gift them your preferred accessories! Got a bridesman in your line-up? Great! Wardrobe-wise, his should be a mix of the bridesmaids’ and the groomsmen's. So, if your girls are in yellow and the guys in light grey, go for a coordinating suit with a yellow tie or pocket square to match the dresses. He’ll blend seamlessly into the wedding party pics whilst still matching the rest of your squad in the bride and bridesmaid/men shots. Finally, don’t forget about junior bridesmaids and/or flower girls, if you’re having them. Whilst they won’t be dressed identically to their older counterparts, it’s ideal to have some coordination. A princess-style dress usually does the trick, with a pop of colour on a sash or hair ribbon to tie them in with the rest of the party! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

MUMS' OUTFITS
Trendsetting Mums Mamas MOB/MOG style is so flexible these days that it really comes down to individual preference. Let’s see what’s topping the trend league tables for 2020…
Colours Whilst bright shades are always a hit in spring and summer, we’ve seen a surge in subdued shades in 2020 – neutrals are set to be anything but boring this wedding season. But before you start embracing this timeless colour palette, it’s worth checking that those tying the knot are on board. Make sure it’s not too light for the big day, or too similar to the hue of the wedding gown.

All sorted? Then let the search begin – think beige, stone and cream, but remember that grey is a great neutral and you can add tones of blue and silver for a bit of sophisticated sparkle. Keen for a pop of colour? Don’t worry, there’s plenty around – especially in pastel shades. Powder blue, pretty pinks and seafoam green are perfect for a summer, or even a destination, wedding.
Shape and fabric Low backs remain a firm favourite for the classy lady (ensure it has a modest neckline, though, and wear your hair up – why not add statement earrings, too?), as are clean, structured lines that flatter the waist.
Meanwhile, fashion-forward mothers who dare to bare will know that off-the-shoulder and oneshoulder styles are back and well worth trying. Alternatively, you could reflect the 2020 trend for voluminous cuffed sleeves, asymmetric hems and high necklines – add a bold floral print and you’re onto a winner. Summer weddings call for light lace to keep you cool. Go for all-over lace or add sheer panelling to break it up. Pair this with a strappy block heel to keep you stylish but safe on grass or sand! Thinking ahead to autumn and winter? It’s all about plush velvet. Don’t think bulky – go for a figure-hugging stretch fabric and a ruched bodice that’s sure to flatter. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Embellishments Just as is the case for brides, sparkle is big news for mothers of the bride and groom this year. Don’t be afraid to wow with headto-toe sparkle (try a shimmery champagne gold or a striking charcoal grey), but if fullon Hollywood glam isn’t for you, how about going ultra-glitzy with your accessories? Sequin shoes, anyone?
Dress alternatives Jumpsuits are still very much enjoying the limelight. Go modern and elegant with something neutral with delicate lace detail – top marks if it has super-flattering cap sleeves, too.
www.brodiecountryfare.com
Alternatively, make a statement with frilled sleeves and a waist cinching tie. Look out for monochrome – white lace on top (the perfect complement to the bride’s dress, but do check with her first!) and black on the bottom. Meanwhile, a cape jumpsuit or one with a

customarily, is removed when the evening meal begins – traditionally, the motherof-the-bride taking off her hat signalled to guests that they could follow suit. Others keep it simple and subtle with a hatinator or fascinator. Meanwhile, some MOBs and MOGs avoid headgear altogether and focus on a hairstyle that’ll blow everyone away. There are no rules here and the most important thing is that these leading ladies feel happy and comfortable on the day! ♥

GROOMSWEAR
The Merry GroomsMen The groom and his squad (or grooms, of course, if it’s a samesex wedding) have more to do on the big day than just look good – but that is a huge part of it! Taking on the role of best man or usher comes with the unspoken assumption that you’ll take on a task or two…
The to-do lists For the best man (the groom’s chief helper), it’s all about making sure everything runs smoothly during the wedding day and, prior to that, organising a cracking stag party – from which the main man gets home safely, of course!

After this, the most important job tends to be looking after the rings and handing them to the minister or groom during the ceremony. The best man also plays a part in gathering guests for photographs and ensuring everyone gets safely from the ceremony to the reception venue.

Outfit coordination: From organising tryons and collecting hired items to helping the groom get ready (and to the ceremony on time!) on the day. Buttonholes and other bits and bobs: Checking they’ve arrived and been handed out. Likewise with orders of service, confetti, etc.

Payments: Although most are dealt with online prior to the wedding, the best man was traditionally – and may still be – tasked with paying any fees due on the day – the church organist or band, for example. Reading out cards: Another traditional one but still done from time to time; the best man reads out cards and messages at the reception.
Following the wedding, it’s customary for the groom’s right-hand man to take charge of returning any hired items – particularly useful if you’re jetting straight off on honeymoon!

Last on the to-do list: Oversee the ushers, who get off a little more lightly with their wedding day responsibilities! Nevertheless, being an usher is an important role and often includes the following: • Pre-ceremony: Being at the venue well in advance of the ceremony time to greet guests (bearing in mind they may need to tell them where to park and have umbrellas on hand if the sun isn’t shining!) and hand out copies of the order of service. Traditionally, an usher would escort the bride’s mother and groom’s parents to their front row seats, too. •
Mid-ceremony: Hopefully there are no latecomers but if there are, the usher(s) should be on hand to seat them with minimum disruption.
• Post-ceremony: Commonly, ushers will help the best man gather the troops for formal photographs and organise transport to the reception. Once there, the last task is to make sure everyone has found their seats for the wedding breakfast. The style Have you spotted the snaps of our feature groom, Harry? Sporting a contemporary navy tweed kilt outfit in midnight tartan, he definitely nailed the current groomswear trends. And, if you’ve read our Get The Look features, you’ll know why. At the moment, male wedding fashion is all about embracing tweed – and, more specifically, giving a big nod to the hugely popular British drama, Peaky Blinders. Groomswear suppliers are seeing more requests than ever for tweed suits with lots of couples opting for this cool yet quirky wedding theme. Herringbone jackets are huge just now – pick a suede collar and add a pocket square to complement the tie colour. But, equally, you go could go for a different take on this trusty, heritage fabric. The suit Traditional Scottish dress – whether full kilt or a tartan plus tweed get-up – isn’t for everyone, so suits are a sophisticated alternative. As such, Slater Menswear – the UK’s largest menswear retailer, based on Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Street, has launched its Wedding Party Selector tool. Aiming to replicate its traditional instore service online, grooms using the innovative new approach simply need to enter suit sizes and measurements, select the preferred colour (or leave it blank to explore the full collection) and Slaters will take care of the rest. And it’s not just for the groom – pop in details for the whole party to avoid the often-tricky job of coordinating diaries for a visit to the store. Gems of Jewellery Advice Whether they got down on bended knee in traditional style, or brides-to-be indulged in the old Irish tradition of being allowed to propose on Leap Day, getting engaged is an exciting and exhilarating experience for any loved-up couple. The well-known customs for popping the question – on bended knee, asking the father’s permission, ladies’ choice in a leap year – may go back centuries with the usual ‘lost in the mists of time’ reasons… or, surprisingly, they might be less ancient history and more modern than we think.

Getting down on one knee may be traced, in part, to the days of medieval knights and courtly romancing: it showed respect towards their lady love. But coming alongside the actual “Will you marry me?” is more recent, according to reports. Proposals back in the day were more a business negotiation, involving dowries and land, and the happy couple were more likely to be sidelined while the relatives brokered a mutually beneficial deal. Asking a father for his daughter’s hand goes back quite a bit, to Roman times if sources are to be believed. A would-be groom gave his intended bride’s papa a coin as a symbol. If dad accepted it, permission was given. And in mid-18th century England and Wales, the Marriage Act meant you had to ask permission to marry if you were under 21 – hence the elopements to Gretna Green if the parents said: “No!” All this, of course, was based on men doing the proposing and ladies were meant to wait patiently for them to make their move. However, back in 5thcentury Ireland, a certain nun called St Bridget wasn’t having this and complained to St Patrick about how long suitors were taking to propose. The legend’s that St Patrick said women could turn the tables and ask the men – but only every four years. This tradition moved to Scotland with Irish monks, it’s believed, and a law passed in the 13th century allowed ladies to pop the question on Leap Day – with men facing a fine if they didn’t say: “Yes!”

Naturally, over time this custom spread far and wide… The exact details have become a little murky, of course, but who doesn’t enjoy a bit of mystery with their romance? Nowadays, it’s up to you whether you follow traditions or not. Some like them, maybe for nostalgia’s sake or out of politeness and respect; others find them outdated. Basically, the choice is yours – a proposal can take any form you fancy, in keeping with your own customs and taste. And the same goes for the ring… Although diamonds would still appear to be the best friend of many, coloured gemstones are increasingly hot to trot – and rarer than a more traditional sparkler if you’re looking for something more individual. But which to choose? That depends on taste and if you want to send a special message in your choice of jewel. As well as remembering the 4 Cs – cut, colour, clarity and carat – for diamonds, you can look up the meanings of different gems: for example, red ruby for passion; blue sapphire for honesty and loyalty; red garnet for unconditional love and protection; and, the luckiest, emerald for happiness and success.

You can still have your diamond, though, as they come in many colours… Perhaps a champagne one (golden brown in colour) would suit you, as it represents celebrating and cheerleading one another, so they say. And don’t dismiss the semi-precious stones: aquamarine (or blue beryl) for courage and communication; blue topaz for loyalty and eternal love; citrine for happiness and prosperity; or moonstone for love that lasts a lifetime…

Of course, engagement rings aren’t just for the ladies! Check out the different styles available for men and see if your rings can complement one another’s. Just ask our stellar northeast jewellers for their top tips. When it comes to wedding rings, don’t forget to ensure that, as well as matching your engagement ring(s) in style, they’re made of metals that won’t clash or tarnish one another. Golds – rose, white and yellow – are still popular, but so are platinum, palladium and titanium. Add a stone if you fancy it, and perhaps some decoration such as Celtic carvings or a twist. To personalise further, engrave a special message inside for your beloved to surprise them on the big day. Don’t fancy any of the styles you see on show at the jewellers? Ask them about going bespoke. They can work with you to create a design that’s exclusively yours – and within your budget. Just allow extra time for these creations as they’ll take longer to arrive than other rings. Want to expand into gifts for your new spouse and support teams? Then look at wearable extras – earrings, necklaces, bracelets, tie or kilt pins, brooches, cufflinks and so on. Not only will these be a nice finishing touch for outfits; they’ll also be a lovely and long-lasting memento of your wedding itself. Final thoughts? Find out about cleaning and preserving your precious gems – and get them insured pronto! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

Polished Bridal Off
Hair done? Check. Make-up expertly applied? Check. Teeth gleaming? Check. Feeling a million dollars? At least, if not more! But not quite sure how you’re going to achieve all this? Call in the north-east’s experts… But be quick as they book up far in advance, especially for high wedding season – summer! The tiny details for making your wedding ensemble look fab-u-lous are really important. Paying attention to the hemline, embroidery, buttonholes, kilt pins, the perfect Windsor knot in the tie and getting everything to match to perfection is time-consuming – and maybe a bit stressful as the big day looms! But it’ll all be worth it in the end to ensure your wedding is magical. In the mix of getting those details right, though, don’t forget to polish the physical you too! For starters, what about your crowning glory? Are you wearing it up or down, in a ponytail or a French plait if it’s long? Have you factored that in to work with your outfit? Are you going with a simple bandeau on your head, a tiara or a veil? Or perhaps you’re going for a hat. What’s your neckline going to be?

Don’t forget about make-up. Do your research and find someone you’re comfortable with, as well as impressed with their skills. Any doubts about what works, ask your stylists and they’ll keep you on the right track.
www.iskabirniephotography.co.uk
And for both hair and make-up, have a dry run… if you can dovetail this with a fitting, so much the better as you can see how the whole ensemble’ll work together and iron out any wrinkles… Speaking of which, think about your skin. We’re not suggesting you’re anything but perfect; however, you may want to improve the tone for a flawless look.

FLOWERS
Charm & Flowers Cheer A wedding wouldn’t be a wedding without flowers. From sweet-smelling bouquets to striking buttonholes, and captivating centrepieces to delightful decorative arrangements, beautiful blooms will add lots of charm and cheer to your ceremony and reception whilst helping to set the tone for your whole day.
So, here are some of the factors we recommend taking into account when considering your choice of flowers – and your supplier…
The feel of your day Ideally, when it comes to sourcing a florist, you’ll already know your venue and have a good idea of the general vibe you hope to create. As such, the overall theme of your wedding – whether chic and sophisticated or rustic and vintage – will be a great way to initially rule out some options.

The attire As you get further into the detail, thinking about the shape and style of your outfit could heavily influence the design of your bouquet. Your florist should make sure the arrangement stands out against a wedding dress, for example – you don’t want it getting lost in the photographs – and it’s important you go with a size you feel comfortable holding on the big day.
The layout Floral displays are highly impactful but make sure they don’t take over! With table centrepieces, for example, you’ll want to ensure they don’t compromise space for place settings – and serving platters if you’re going for a grazing board-style menu. Also check that their height won’t prevent guests seeing the person opposite them.
The florist As always, personal recommendations are worth their weight in gold! Chat to a couple of different florists – three is a good number – before making a final decision. Equip them with all they need (a guide to how many bouquets, buttonholes, centrepieces and other decorative arrangements you need, plus an idea of budget) and ask for some estimated costs.

Aiming for a
sustainable wedding?
Shop local and in season
when it comes to flowers. www.iskabirniephotography.co.uk
When you start working with them, it’s likely they’ll encourage you to pull together a vision board to help them get started. Include pictures of the outfits – or, even better, fabric swatches – and any other snippets that’ll make your taste, likes and dislikes clear.
Eco-friendly values Aiming for a sustainable wedding? Shop local and in season! Sourcing flowers from the other side of the world can really add to the carbon footprint of your big day, so quiz your florist about local seasonal produce and/or organic flowers.
Other options Tight budget? Suffer from allergies? Swap fresh flowers for silk or paper versions. ♥

We’d been out for a walk just eight months after meeting, talking about our relationship and where it was going. The moment got the better of me and I asked: “If we’re still together in 10 years, will we get married?” He said yes – but life got in the way. Fast forward to now and we’re both back at work full-time with two children who are old enough to enjoy a wedding. In fact, our 12-year-old daughter was my bridesmaid and our 18-year-old son walked me down the aisle… He was beaming with pride in the photos! I’d proposed to Dave on 24 February all those years ago and, whilst that was a Tuesday this year, we realised that 29 February was a Saturday. Tying the knot on Leap Day couldn’t have been more fitting! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

So, the date was set and we’d be saying, “I do” at the Hilton Treetops. But just two weeks before – just after we’d paid the balance and tasted our menu – disaster struck. A friend rang me, having heard that staff were being sent home from the venue. Panicking, I phoned to check but didn’t get anything concrete – they said someone would be in touch the following day to assure me everything was fine. A few hours later, though, it was all over social media – they’d closed. In shock, I posted on Fubar and, within half an hour, the head chef at the new Crowne Plaza Aberdeen Airport was in touch to see what they could do. Lots of other kind event managers tried to help too, but the Crowne was one of only two venues with our date free. I went to see it with a friend and fell in love – they gave us such a good deal, too. The team went above and beyond. I’d not actually had much input at the Treetops, so we started from scratch and they created the wedding I wanted – adding so much more than we expected. Our theme was simple and classic – and chosen by my daughter, Chloe! Her dress was navy and mine was full-length with a bit of a train and lots of embroidery. I wore an Art Deco-style cape and blinged up Converse – Chloe had the same. Dave was in the Royal Pride of Scotland tartan. Our whole wedding took place in the Crowne Plaza and it really couldn’t have been better. They kindly gave Chloe and I a room the night before and treated us to lots of goodies, like brownies

and chocolate-covered strawberries. We had a humanist ceremony, then headed to the ballroom for the meal. This amazing space, complete with a private bar and seating area, was then turned around for the disco. The venue was actually the best bit of the wedding for us! We were constantly amazed by the kindness of strangers and impressed at everyone pulling together. Funnily enough, the most important advice I’d give to others planning a wedding would be to take out wedding insurance. Unfortunately, we didn’t and we’re finding it very difficult to claim back any of our payments to the original venue. Most other brides and grooms I speak to have said they didn’t take out insurance and some didn’t even know it was an option. I’d urge everyone to do it – you just never know what could happen. And whilst I wouldn’t wish anyone else to be in our position, if any other couples do find themselves here, don’t be too disheartened – the power of social media and the kindness of strangers will amaze you. Everyone wants to get involved and help, and you could end up like us: with a wedding that’s better than you could have ever imagined!” ♥

In the north east, you’re totally spoilt for choice in the variety of venues open to you… over 300 fairy-tale castles, baronial mansions and romantic ruins can inspire your imaginations. You could even hoof it up with a reception at Balmoral in The Piper’s Hall, if you’ve got an early spring date. Not sure where to start? Well, the pages of GWD, of course… but there’s also the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and VisitScotland among others if you’re looking for ideas. A few things to consider… First of all, you’ll need to see if they can accommodate both the ceremony and the reception – and your guest list. These venues can be more suitable for a small, intimate wedding, so check what’s possible in those terms straight away. Some may have barns that can take more people or have space for a marquee though, so don’t abandon hope too quickly if you’ve seen something you adore. On the other hand, this can help whittle down your list so you’re not overwhelmed with places to visit.

Want an eco-friendly wedding? Then decorate a community hall with wild flowers and feed your guests on local produce… If it’s summer, you could have a Wimbledon theme with strawberries and cream for pudding, served up with a glass of Pimm’s and tennis on the lawn to entertain the guests in between the ceremony and reception. Tennis balls could be converted into place cards and orange squash can quench the thirst of mini attendees or designated drivers

Hankering after a bit of Hollywood glamour? Then maybe a warehouse is ideal – with bare brick walls and metal pillars. Get your event specialist to source spotlights, old cameras and roll out the red carpet along the aisle to the altar. The top table can sit in their very own directors’ or stars’ chairs – personalised for the occasion, making them a great and rather handy memento of the big day. Add in gold, silver and bronze highlights – including the plates, cutlery and glasses – to enhance that feeling of opulence. Why not get some fake award statuettes and everyone can make their own acceptance speech to add to the fun reel for later…?
With stunning, uninterrupted views out over the Hill of Fayre and surrounding Banchory and Aberdeenshire countryside, the Cowshed offers mouth-watering good food, showcasing Scottish produce at its very best and prepared by our team of award winning chefs – you and your guests will enjoy a day to remember.

Thinking of something more rustic? Then a barn is just the ticket. Put out hay bales for round-theroom seating, throw in a session of corn dolly making, and spread sawdust on the dance floor. Going all out for a country and western theme? Red and white gingham tablecloths on wagon wheel tables would look great, and the band can get everyone line dancing and dosey doe-ing. www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk
Remember to check how long you can hire the space for and how much it is for set-up and tidying up afterwards, especially if you’re doing a DIY job. Also, find out when you get access and what facilities they’ve got on site for the catering, setting up for the band and so on. Dot the i’s and cross the t’s and you’re sure to have a fab day! ♥

What shall we sit at? Choose what best suits the vibe you want to create. Classic circular tables create a different sort of atmosphere than quirky squares, sociable ovals or beer hall-style trestles, for example. When it comes to chairs, the classic Chiavari is one of the most popular (elegant and available in lots of colours, it works in just about every setting), but any hotel chair can be wedding-ified www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

Who’s sitting where? Whilst the hotel is likely to offer a simple yet stylish branded place card, you may have your own ideas and your event manager is likely to be all ears. How about writing on glossy leaves with a gold or silver pen? Or tying name tags to single, longstemmed flowers? Perfect for a wedding that’s all about bringing the outside in. For a beach theme, paint names on pretty pebbles. For a bit of fun, source them from the beach or, for an easier ride, a garden centre!

•
Embrace fruit: From pyramids of glossy green apples to sugar-frosted delights (simply dip the fruit into lightly beaten egg white and roll in caster sugar) to using them as candleholders – just cut off the base of an orange, lemon or lime so it stands upright, slice off the top, scoop out some of the flesh and place a battery-operated tealight inside. Voila!

Pop something in a bowl: Flowers, petals, fruit slices or floating candles – pick what suits and watch the magic happen.

Pimp up your napkin: Add a little touch to complement your wedding colours/theme. Go super-sophisticated with thick, silky ribbon or rustic chic with ivy or raffia.
•
Get creative with cutlery: On the rustic note, how about tying your knives, forks and spoons together with foliage or twine instead of the usual layout?
•
Bring the outside in: A hot trend right now, pop tealights into terracotta pots and source herbs, moss and other foliage to surround them. Alternatively, gather empty jam jars or booze bottles and fill them with charming flowers. Add some ribbon for a cute finishing touch.

elsewhere, part of this time will be spent travelling to your hotel. You’ll slink off for photographs then join your guests for drinks and canapés. The hotel will have a mouth-watering list of suggestions for nibbles and tipples – personalised his ‘n’ his/her ‘n’ her/ his ‘n’ her cocktails, anyone?
The call to dinner Long before the meal is served, your MC or the hotel’s event manager will do the all-important call for dinner, giving people time to powder their noses, finish a chat or down a drink (!) before heading to their table.
The receiving line A big nod to tradition, the line-up sees happy couple and their nearest and dearest (commonly immediate family, the chief bridesmaid and the best man) greet the guests as they arrive for dinner. You may want to ask your event coordinator to monitor this closely – some guests will zoom through the queue but others will loiter and cause a backlog! Hotel staff are usually on hand here, offering a tray of alcoholic and alcohol-free toast drinks. Usually this is fizzfocused, but how about asking your hotel for a drinks trolley with all the favourites, from whisky to gin? Bear in mind that this could prove timeconsuming, though, so perhaps best saved for smaller weddings!
Speeches Now, this is a tricky one. There’s a big division over whether speeches should be pre- or postdinner. But they now commonly happen before the meal – the father-of-the-bride first, followed by the groom then the best man (and if anyone else wants to speak, they’re best to go after the groom). This is largely to do with those speaking being able to relax and enjoy their food! Your hotel’s event manager can introduce each speaker, as well as setting them up with the necessary equipment, like microphones and any other accessories. Another thing to put on the list to discuss ahead of time! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

For those… on a budget Going to a wedding can be an expensive business, especially if you’re not local. Some guests will be paying to get there, as well as making a generous contribution to your gift list and buying a new frock for the day, never mind spending on accommodation. So, do a bit of research into the most costeffective options around and do include them.
For those… making a holiday of it At the other end of the spectrum, some (whether or not they’re coming from afar) may see your wedding as an excuse to get away for more than one night. And why not? So, look out for luxurious hotels nearby – think lush spa, award-winning dining and beautiful surroundings – or super-sophisticated self-catering spots. Some come with pools, gyms and masseuses whilst others offer lots of added extras, like a bottle of fizz on arrival and a mouthwatering breakfast hamper in the morning. Can you think of anything better after dancing the night away?

Getting Transport There
Booking wedding transport? Don’t forget to think about the time of year! Whilst a horse-drawn carriage would be blissful in summer sunshine, it’s not much fun on a chilly day. But not to worry – the northeast’s professional transport providers offer creative options for every season. Now, here’s everything else you need to think about before booking…

Outfit considerations
Like most other suppliers, you need to secure the northeast’s hottest transport providers pronto, especially in peak wedding season!
If there’s a bride, is she wearing a full dress or one with a long train? Definitely worth ensuring everyone’s attire will fit comfortably into the mode of transport!
Do your homework Look at websites and read reviews but visit companies you’re considering, too. It’s the only way to be sure you’re happy with how their vehicles are maintained. Satisfied? Ask for a written estimate and ask the all-important questions: Are charges by the hour or a set rate? How much mileage is included? And will the chauffer be in uniform? Could make a cool pic!
Be prepared It’s well-worth finding out what would happen if your vehicle broke down, whether en route to pick you up or with you in it! On that note, consider traffic when working out your travel timetable. If you’ve got quite a way to go, think about setting a reminder to check for planned roadworks the week before the big day.
Make a real impression on your big day and arrive at your ceremony or reception in unique style, in one of our stunningly restored and beautifully appointed classic Volkswagen Campers.

CEREMONIES
A Guide to Ceremonies Ceremony Types Did you know that it’s lucky to kiss a chimney sweep (associated with the hearth and home) en route to your ceremony? Talking of which, have you decided the type that’s right for you? If not, here’s a quick rundown… A civil ceremony Simple and straightforward, these are conducted by a registrar and can take place in a wide variety of venues, provided the registration authority is in agreement. Looking to personalise? Besides the basic vows that the law demands, most registrars are happy to incorporate your music and readings.
An independent civil ceremony Want to write your own script? Then this may be the ceremony for you. Conducted by an independent civil celebrant at pretty much any place you like, you have the opportunity to make the content ultra-personal. You can include religious or spiritual content too, if you prefer.
A Church of Scotland ceremony Conducted by a minister, this’ll reflect your Christian beliefs through the vows and blessing – but you don’t have to be a member of the Church of Scotland. These ceremonies are usually in a church but could be elsewhere at your minister’s discretion. There’ll be hymns and biblical passages, but you can potentially incorporate a secular reading as well. www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

CEREMONIES
A Catholic ceremony
www.byrhea.co.uk
Set in a Catholic church – often one personal to the happy couple – a priest will conduct a ceremony that consists of prayers, hymns, bible readings and, sometimes, mass. Both been baptised in the Catholic faith? You’re good to go. If one of you hasn’t, you’re not quite good to go – see your local Catholic bishop for guidance.
A humanist ceremony Got an off-the-wall venue idea? Then look for a humanist celebrant. Provided they’re happy that your chosen ceremony spot reflects the significance of your marriage, they’ll leave you to make this decision and pretty much all the others – readings, music and even the wording of the vows. This style of ceremony makes no reference to religion but you can incorporate meaningful rituals – handfasting, for example.
An interfaith ceremony If you and your partner are from differing religious or cultural backgrounds, it’s not a problem. An interfaith celebrant (authorised by the General Register of Scotland) can honour both sides through your ceremony. At a location of your choice, they’ll pull together the religious, spiritual or secular aspects that suit, combined with the music, rituals and words that signify your love. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

Did you know that in the North-East of Scotland, a civil marriage ceremony is the most popular marriage option for couples?
We w ou to yo ld love to talk cerem u about your ony p us a c all, or lease give appo make a n intm onlin ent e:
Every year, our friendly and experienced registrars offer hundreds of couples advice, guidance and reassurance every step of the way until the Wedding Day. We delight in ensuring that every marriage ceremony is meaningful, unique and personally tailored to your individual wishes. You will never forget the moment you said “I Do”…! What is a civil marriage ceremony? A civil marriage ceremony is a ‘non-religious’ marriage ceremony, as traditional or bespoke as you wish it to be. Who officiates a civil marriage ceremony? Civil marriages are officiated by a registrar or assistant registrar who will assist you on every step of your journey to marriage – from accepting your marriage notices, creating your marriage ceremony with you, and issuing your marriage certificate after the big day. Registrars are unique in our ability to help with both the legal and the ceremonial aspects of marriage. Where and when can a civil marriage take place? A civil marriage can take place on any date, at any time, and in any imaginable location within the Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire area. We can even hold ceremonies at sea…! Aberdeen City Registrars 0300 020 0292 www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/registrars
Can we choose what to have in our ceremony? Absolutely - you have tremendous choice in tailoring your marriage ceremony to make the occasion even more personal and to your taste. From readings to musical performances, from quaichs to handfasting, we love to get creative with couples, offering advice, guidance and reassurance as you decide upon the ceremony that’s right for you – at no extra cost. And no matter how colourful the occasion, we always ensure that the moment you say “I do” is a solemn and sincere commitment between two people in love. Can we include a religious reading? Yes, you can. Traditionally, civil marriages were entirely non-religious. Today, a religious reading or a song may be permitted during proceedings. Please discuss this with your registrar.

The initial inspo does have to come from somewhere, though. Often, it’s the attire of the bride(s) as that tends to dictate what everyone else is wearing, and the style of the flowers. But also think about the time of year (use blues and yellows for spring and, for Easter nuptials, pepper your tables with brightlycoloured eggs) and the venue. A castle setting is the perfect reason for a medieval or fairytale theme, for example.

You may want to keep it simple and stylish with a classic white wedding or, at the other end of the scale, go all out and incorporate a shared interest or passion, from comic books to somewhere you’ve travelled to.
How many colours should I use? Colour is a great way to demonstrate a theme and give your wedding a sense of continuity. If you’re keeping it super-sleek, go for white and one accent colour – with many popular wedding flowers in this shade, pink is popular. Use your accent shade on details like bouquet ribbon, cake www.jonathanaddie.com

icing, table décor and the groom’s tie. For a bit more drama, choose a darker shade (purple or navy?) or go for the ultimate contrast by pairing black and white. Want something more complex? Combine colours that complement (pink and blue or yellow and orange) or contrast (yellow and blue or pink and green) one another. Going for the contrast? Keep one paler than the other to ensure you get a soft, as opposed to garish, effect. Think deep pink and mint green, or powder pink with forest green, perhaps?
Your wedding day should reflect your style.
Choose one you love as much as you love each other…

And favours? Handmade favours are always appreciated. Tie together bundles of sweets (chocolate eggs for Easter and coins for Christmas!) with circles of cellophane or tulle with ribbon in your wedding colour. Or, instead of edible favours, how about placing a few of your favourite flower seeds into a little envelope? Your guests can help your love grow!

Is including foliage a good idea? Definitely! It can be cleverly combined with other elements to create a simple yet spectacular effect. Keep your colour palette muted (whites and creams) and mix garden flowers with herbs to create a fresh and homely feel. Arrange your blooms unpretentiously in mismatched glass vases (head to your local charity shop) and add tall candelabra for structure and height. www.aboynephotographics.com

CATERING
Feed Me! Catering Wedding receptions have their roots in the medieval period – the groom had to demonstrate that he could support his wife by gifting hospitality to his in-laws. Today, organising food and drink tends to be more of a joint effort between the happy couple! But where do you start? Personal recommendations – from those you know or your venue – are a good starting point. From there, ask to see sample menus and quotes. Query whether or not you can mix and match set menus, too. Happy so far? Then ask for edible samples! If they go down well, request a formal written quote and details of the terms and conditions – when do they need to know final numbers and dietary requirements? Thinking about asking family or friends to cater for your big day? Think carefully…! Regardless of how good a home cook someone is, cooking en masse for a very special occasion is a different kettle of fish entirely – and you’d need lots of helpers on hand. It would be a brilliant costsaver, though!

Finally, take heed of the trends! Here are our top five for 2020: 1. Veganism, of course: The standard chicken or fish dinner is so last decade. Get ready for lots of plant-based options. 2. Black tie-worthy street food: How about lamb mignon and smoked tzatziki bites? 3. Comfort food: Think grilled cheese sandwiches and ramen. 4. Interactivity: We’ve seen singing waiters and food stations but the ante is upping in 2020… Churro umbrella, anyone? 5. Clever twists on classic childhood snacks: Yum! ♥

CAKES
A Showstopper Cakes
gorgeouslysweetcakeemporium@outlook.com
Traditionally, cake-cutting comes later in the day, but now some caterers suggest it’s done before the wedding breakfast so it can be served with tea and coffee after the meal – or even as a dessert. But whatever the order of events and whenever your cake is served, the most important thing is that it tastes delicious and looks like a GBBO showstopper!

Setting the foundation Classic wedding cakes are made of a rich fruit mixture and consist of three tiers. They were traditionally held up by small but powerful columns, but these days they’re often stylishly stacked – and draped in marzipan and white royal icing, of course. This has long been the case – partly because fruit cake ages very well and, as such, couples can keep the top tier for their first wedding anniversary or even the christening of their first baby. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Top tip: When doing this, be sure to remove the icing and marzipan then wrap the cake in greaseproof paper. It should be stored in an airtight tin in a cool, dark place until it’s needed. And, when the time comes, it can be re-iced. Shorter term, small pieces can be given or sent to those who can’t make the wedding, and fruit cake should last the journey!

Getting decorative Options for cake decoration are increasingly impressive. From keeping it super-simple with a rustic naked cake to embracing the season, your hobbies or your wedding colours, it could be hard to narrow down! Scour the internet, wedding mags and websites – like GWD – and you’ll end up with a scrapbook of things that’ve caught your eye. Look for similarities – or something that sticks out – and you’ll have a shortlist in no time. Take it to your cake-maker and they’ll be delighted to guide you from there.
Going DIY?

If your budget is tight, doing it yourself is a definite possibility – or even going half and half. Could you get it baked by a professional and add your own decoration? Alternatively, if you or someone you know is happy to make the cake but not quite brave enough to ice it, enquire with the professionals as to whether they could finish off the job – or ice it plainly for you to add details.

Need embellishment inspo? A little bit can go a long way so try simple ribbon tied round each tier like a sash, finished with a bow. Alternatively, add brightly coloured fresh flowers (a fab contrast with pure white icing), fresh fruit or ready-made sugar decorations – from a couple on the top of a hill with their four-legged friend to a cast of comic book characters, there’s bound to be something to tickle your fancy! ♥

Civil ceremonies often include music to set the scene before the wedding – and help guests pass the time if a certain someone is running late! The music will change, usually to something chosen by the couple, for the big entrance and will begin again for the signing of the register and the exit of the newlyweds. Some couples choose to incorporate a tune or two in the ceremony as well, whether live or recorded.
Glitz are a vastly experienced band of highly professional musicians. Such a fine team ensures that you receive a top-class performance and extremely reliable service from start to finish. In a registry office, the same applies but space is likely to be smaller so consider the size of your ensemble or provide a recording – the perfect opportunity to pull together a special playlist. Bear in mind that the registrar will have to approve your choice of music! Reception options include an acoustic set during the drinks’ reception, background music as guests are seated for dinner, singing waiters to keep them on their toes and a band or DJ for the evening. Just remember, when making your choices, to consider the venue’s acoustics, as well as the number of guests you expect… and the noise they’re likely to make! Ideally, it should be loud enough to dance to, but quiet enough for conversation.

Help them out: Provide clear directions, especially if your venue is remote or tricky to find. Make sure they have designated parking close to the entrance – it’ll speed up set-up time. Liaise with the venue: A smooth process with your musicians means finding out some vitals from your venue. Ask if there’s a certain time at which music has to stop and if there are any other guidelines for performers. In fact, it might just be worth putting your venue and entertainment supplier in direct contact! ♥

Special Sentiments From Harry Pauline proposing to his bride-to-be at Inverurie Academy 38 years after they met there to By Rhea capturing the pair at the same fireplace Harry’s parents had posed at as newlyweds in 1958, it’s safe to say that the new Mr and Mrs Pauline’s big day was not short of sentiment! We spoke to the beautiful bride, Wendy, to find out more…

“We were good friends at school but went separate ways and didn’t get together until we were 41! As such, we didn’t want a long engagement and, fortunately, we knew the venues we wanted. We chose St Andrew’s Church in Inverurie because my parents got married there in 1963, and Meldrum House Hotel because Harry’s mum and dad hosted their wedding reception there in 1958. There was no specific theme but I wanted to personalise the day by doing as much as I could by myself. North East Events helped with our postbox and chair covers, but I arranged the rest of the décor – keeping it simple, though, so there wasn’t too much to do! I worked on the stationery and centrepieces (tall vases with lilies, paired with crystal table confetti), whilst the cake was a joint effort. I’d have loved to make and ice it but, unfortunately, I didn’t have time. So, I called upon Marks & Spencer for the sponge cakes and my mum made the big bottom tier, which was fruit cake. A close family friend, Isobel, helped me ice it to match the others perfectly. Sadly, Harry’s parents had passed away, so we remembered them with a framed picture of their wedding day next to the guest book. The favours were personal to us too – Glen Garioch whisky from Harry’s hometown of Oldmeldrum and the equivalent from my home county of Wiltshire. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
Our photographer, Rhea, did a great job capturing
everyone – she made
sure she got everyone at least once.
Being an ‘older bride,’ I wanted something in keeping with my age, and quite plain – but still special! Clare, my bridesmaid, and Megan, my god-daughter, were invaluable in helping me and, of course, my mum’s approval was paramount.

I stayed with her the night before the wedding and Harry stayed at home. We had a nice, relaxed morning getting our hair and make-up done then it was ceremony time! It was a traditional religious ceremony, followed by drinks and canapés on arrival at Meldrum. We chose our wedding breakfast menu (vegetarian soup and a chicken main course, followed by caramelised lemon tart) with our guests in mind – we thought it would suit most people and the dessert would be nice and light. The evening started with us dancing to our favourite song, At Last by Etta James – it
seemed appropriate. Then it was over to the DJ who played a variety of music from all eras to suit the wide range of ages at the wedding – and squeezed in some traditional ceilidh dances, too! It goes without saying that marrying one another was our highlight but it really was lovely to have our family and friends from all over in the same place, celebrating with us. Our photographer, Rhea, did a great job capturing everyone – she knew exactly who she’d taken a photo of and made sure she got everyone at least once. We went to Bali right after, which was amazing and very relaxing after a hectic few days. You don’t realise how tiring it all is until you get away and relax!” ♥

RECORDING THE DAY

Capturing Little Recording theMoments day After the happy couple, photographers are almost the next important people at a wedding. Whilst you can’t always see them (that’s how you can tell they’re really great at what they do!), you put all your trust in them to capture the special elements of your big day, from the “I do”s and the first dance to those lovely little moments that may otherwise go unnoticed. Let’s take a look at the photography journey that lies ahead… Choosing the style for you An important consideration, and possibly the first, is the type of coverage you’re after – and the decision is all yours. The northeast is home to an incredible number of talented snappers, from traditional experts who will ensure you have every formal shot under the sun to those who favour a more modern approach, capturing natural moments in a documentary-style fashion and generating candid shots of you and your guests. Increasingly popular, this is superrelaxed and very informal, focusing on little details like facial expressions and priceless reactions.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Most photographers, however, will be happy to reflect your preferences. If you’re all about the relaxed snaps but the grandparents want some posed family shots for the mantlepiece, they can make it happen. A growing trend, first look photos record the beautiful moment the father-ofthe-bride (or groom) see their child on the wedding morning – definitely something to cherish. Now, couples are jumping on the bandwagon and meeting with their snapper to sneakily shoot their first reaction to one another in their finery before they do it all over again with an audience at the ceremony – very romantic.
Catching specific moments Want to make your wedding day photos stand out? Then add your personality! Brainstorm with your photographer and if you have specific ideas, let them know. Share your order of service with them to ensure they’re in the right place at the right time (and if your venue is off the beaten track, provide directions!), and divulge as many other details of the wedding as possible, to help them get to know you and get some inspo. Going for group shots? Whether it’s formal with specific family members or funky bridal party ones, supply your snapper with a list in advance. And, if possible, get a member of your squad to summon those required as and when – it’ll be a great time saver. At the other end of the scale, if there are any parts of the wedding day you don’t want to relive in photo form – perhaps you’re feeling ultra-nervous about the first dance and flashes throughout will only add to it – let them know. It’s all about good communication! www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

Added extras It’s not just ‘point and shoot’ anymore – there are lots of options to enhance and personalise your wedding pics: Photo booths: Photo booths are a great way to keep guests entertained and a giggle to look back on in years to come. Whether you craft your own (think of a cool theme, from beachy vibes to comic book geek chic) or your photographer comes armed with one, get the props out and go for it! Drones: If they’ve got a licence (always check!), then take advantage and get some cool aerial shots to add to your album. Props: Props are always a good idea – sparklers or confetti, perhaps? Another photographer: Increasingly common, a second shooter means you can capture more angles (one may be up close with the happy couple during the ceremony, whilst the other’ll hang back and catch the looks on the guests’ faces) and more events – both the bride and groom/both brides/both grooms getting ready in the morning, for example. Next day shots: How about asking them for a few more hours the following day, after the dust has settled? Pop to a special location or stick around the venue for some relaxed shots. You could even pop on your wedding attire once more, without the time pressure of the big day! Video: Capturing your day on film gives a whole new dimension and can be a wonderful addition to a camera. There are lots of talented northeast filmmakers – they’ll be so discreet you won’t know they’ve been there… until you’re blown away with a Hollywoodesque blockbuster a few months on! www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk

The end result The way in which your photos are finished may influence your supplier selection. A photo album is always lovely to look back at – and may give the next generation some ideas… or at least something to have a laugh at! Alternatively, you could go digital and decide how to display them at a later date. How about getting one showstopper blown up and printed on a canvas? A great focal point for the marital home, and you could surround it with other smaller prints. Top tip: If you’re printing yourself, seek advice from your photography expert on www.jenniferriddell.co.uk
where to do it. There’s nothing worse than pixelated pics!

But who should I go with? Read and digested all of the above but still no closer to making your choice? Here are our top tips for narrowing down your list and, eventually, picking the one for you: Don’t rush it: There’s so much to take into consideration, so start early. Ideally it should be one of the first things on your to-do list, after securing the venue. You can never do too much research: The northeast’s photography community is vast and varied, and boasts some of the best snappers in Scotland. Check out the pages around this article and familiarise yourself with the different companies, people, packages and – most importantly – examples. But… Look in-depth: Adverts will showcase a supplier’s very best work so, if you like what you see, follow it up with a website visit. Again, it’ll be a small showcase online but if you’re still keen, it’s time to look at a full wedding album. This might be available on the web but, if not, don’t be afraid to

get in touch and ask for a link. This’ll allow you to see a full portfolio, making sure you like their style from start to finish – not just the ‘money shots’. Get on the phone: Asking some initial questions? Pick up the phone! E-mailing is handy but it’s always nice to speak to a real person. You’ll get an instant response and a chance to see how you get on with them. Are they friendly, chatty and helpful? Or is it a bit awkward? Figuring out your first impressions early will help with the final decision. Ask your venue: Do they have a photographer they regularly work with? Or are there one or two who’ve shot at the venue a million times? Having someone who knows the lay of the land will give you a chance to relax and not be worrying about getting the best angles! Budget: Sit down early on and work out what you have available to spend on a cameraman or woman. Some couples will want to make this one of their biggest spends for the wedding (the memories will fade but the photos won’t!), whilst others may be on an ultra-tight budget or simply have other priorities.

Check out the packages in great detail: Each company will operate differently – some with an hourly charge, some with day rates and options to add on extras (like albums), and others will have pulled together packages consisting of their most commonly asked-for elements. Explore all options and, if you’re going for a package deal, really drill down into what it includes. Remember the nitty-gritty: Do you need to pay a deposit to secure the date? Then do you pay in bulk or in instalments? What are the deadlines? Ask, ask, ask: Sounds clichéd but the northeast’s photographers would wholeheartedly agree there’s no such thing as a silly question. So, raise everything and you’ll get honest answers – don’t sign on the dotted line without a complete understanding of everything. Put a face to a name: Still can’t decide between a couple? Make the time to meet them. Take them to the venue or invite them into your home and see what the rapport is like. When you know, you know.

Finally, remember that although your wedding will fly by for you, it’ll be a long day for a hard-working photographer! Keep them happy and full of energy by making them feel welcome. Ensure they’re just as much a part of the day as yourselves and your guests, and make sure they’re well fed, too!

A final word on social media – yay or nay? Whether it’s a big “yes, please” or a firm “no, thank you”, the most important thing is to let your guests know your preference – especially if it’s to avoid them taking photographs and posting them on social media. Politely make guests aware of your ‘rules’ in plenty of time and on the day. Give them a headsup in the invitations and ask your best man/ minister/celebrant to squeeze in a quick reminder before the nuptials begin. It may be that you want your photographer to be the only one operating a camera during the ceremony (this means they have free reign of the space and don’t have to worry about people’s phones getting in the way of their shot!), or that you’re happy for guests to point and shoot, provided nothing is uploaded to social media before the evening guests arrive/the

happy couple shares post-wedding. Embracing camera phones? Then shout about it! Encourage guests to record your big day (again, invitations and a pre-ceremony shout-out will get the message across) and create a cute hashtag so everyone can relive the day via Insta. How about take it a step further and creating a selfie station? Could the pro photographer get involved and capture the hilarity of your guests posing for their hundredth selfie?! ♥

HONEYMOON
♥
Happy Honeymoon Honeymooning Traditionally, the groom planned and paid for the honeymoon but these days – especially with an increasing number of same-sex weddings – it’s much more of a joint venture! Here’s how to make it a holiday to remember…
Don’t be afraid to defer
Research, research, research
Whether it means waiting for a month or a year after the big day, it’s important the timing is right for you.
Bear in mind brochures and websites will always present their subject in its best light. Guidebooks are a good bet for an objective view.
Take a two-part trip Demanding job? How about a long weekend/ mini-moon after the wedding, then a longer honeymoon a few months later?
Short of time? Don’t try to pack in too much or travel too far – it’s supposed to be relaxing, remember!
Set your budget… …before visiting a travel agent. People can be persuasive!
www.grampianweddingdirectoy.co.uk
Get some extras! Let everyone you book with know you’ll be newlyweds – hello, champagne, flowers and chocolates!
Be practical Your tickets and passports must match so, if you’re planning to change your name, decide whether you’ll travel under your maiden or new name. If it’s the latter, allow plenty time for your new passport to arrive – it can be ordered pre-wedding, though! And do consider the Post Office’s checking service to speed things up. ♥
AFTER THE EVENT
♥

After
Postwedding Wedmin Said: ‘I Do’? Danced ‘til dawn? Mini-mooned or honeymooned until your hearts are content? Then, unfortunately, it’s time for one final bit of wedmin!
Your attire Hired outfits will have to be returned right after the big day (if you’re jetting straight off for a ’moon of some sort, rope in your best man!), but with those that are your own it’s worth getting them professionally cleaned. Kilts or suits will be fresh and ready for their next outing whilst bridal gowns can be beautifully boxed until they’re needed again – whether that’s for a wee one’s christening outfit or a trip down memory lane in a few years!
Your gifts If you had a honeymoon contribution list, you’ll just need to hit a button to transfer the pennies – simple! For a traditional gift list, however, you’ll need to arrange delivery. And, once you’ve enjoyed the honeymoon treats or unboxed your new goodies, don’t forget to say thank you!
Your affairs Changing your name? Make sure all the official documents comply with your new title. It’s also worth looking at your wills as newlyweds – or making some if you haven’t already.
Your memories Your reward for ticking all the wedmin boxes? Viewing your photos and watching your video, if you got one! Don’t forget to share the links with your guests, too! ♥ www.byrhea.co.uk
