Lauren & Liam
However, where there’s a will there’s a way and nothing’s stopped many of you tying the knot microwedding style, which we’re loving! A huge well done to those who’ve done it must have come with it’s challenges. Please keep being amazing, keep reading and keep sharing your stories with us to inspire others during this time.
Deborah & Greg
The same positive thoughts go out to our friends in the industry. No wedding business has escaped the impact of the pandemic and GWD is behind you, whether you’ve changed direction to survive or are hunkering down ‘til brighter days arrive.

Finally, sincere thanks to Cody, Paige, Ellie and Claire who’ve made this update happen. So grateful for all you’ve done, and sending big socially distanced hugs. All that’s left to say is enjoy the read! P.S. The Grampian Wedding Directory team has loved being with you every step of the way as you navigate the pandemic. Whilst a printed issue simply still isn’t possible yet, we’ve done all we can to bring you the best we can in digital – for free. If you love it, please consider a small donation to ensure our survival as the only go-to-guide for wedding planning in the northeast of Scotland. Future brides and grooms will be forever thankful.

PLANNING
Lockdown It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for! As of 26 April, wedding ceremonies and receptions can go ahead with up to 50 people. This is great news for engaged couples and the wedding industry. Who can I invite? One of the trickiest parts of planning lockdown weddings was limiting the guest list. Although you'll still need to put a cap on numbers, you now have more freedom and can celebrate your big day with up to 50 people. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the different announcements about weddings – especially because the details differ across the UK – so we’ve laid out what you need to know:
www.jonathanaddie.com
PLANNING
•
•
•
Scotland introduced its level system in November with guest limits depending on which level you were in at the time. Restrictions are easing again! Couples getting married in levels two and three can have up to 50 people at their wedding. In level one this increases to 100 before doubling to 200 in level zero! These numbers include the couple, witnesses, guests, children of all ages, carers accompanying guests and all staff not employed by the venue. So, when it comes to photographers, musicians and caterers, think about what you want to prioritise on your big day.
•
The number doesn’t include your celebrant or interpreters. Another bonus – there’s no limit on the number of households.
•
Want to make sure all your original guests feel involved? Look into streaming or recording the ceremony (check out Recording the Day for more info).

What’s different planning-wise? On the lead-up
•
•
•
•
Timing: Keep the ceremony as short as possible. Could you limit religious rituals or fine-tune them to make them shorter and safer? Food and drink: Food is allowed at receptions again- you can even have alcoholic drinks! Unfortunately buffets are off the menu but you and your guests can enjoy a full sit down meal from the comfort of your seats! Calling the shots: It’s the venue’s responsibility to follow Covid-19 guidance but your celebrant can refuse to perform the ceremony if they feel it’s unsafe. Best way to avoid this? Keep them posted of any and all plans! Feeling poorly: If you or your partner feel unwell, you must cancel the wedding. We know it’d be devastating, but health has to be the priority. Remind guests and witnesses they have a responsibility to call off if they’re unwell. Might be worth setting up a few back-ups who could step in at the last minute?

Social distancing: In a bar or dining area you can follow 1 meter social distancing instead of the usual 2 meters. You must have clear signs showing where these areas are. Minimise contact: Think different pens for signing the register, and as few people as possible handling the rings. Face coverings: Everyone needs to pop one on unless they’re exempt so embrace it – how about going glittery, or getting a custom-made set for everyone? You and the celebrant can take them off during the ceremony though, provided you’re two metres away from everyone else. Hand sanitiser: Goes without saying that this is vital but it could be easily forgotten amidst the excitement. Set up plenty of stations (why not tie them in with your décor?) and remind everyone to keep up good hygiene all day. First Dance: Live music is not currently allowed at your reception except for your first dance as newlyweds. Don’t worry- your parents and guests will also be allowed to dance as long as they live in the same house. Reception options: They're back! In lockdown, the signing of the marriage schedule marked the end of the wedding. But now you can continue your celebrations until 10pm in Level 3, 10:30pm in Level 2, and 11pm in Level 1. Seating Arrangements: Try to keep family members at the same table to make sure guests are seated with their own households. You can have up to six people from two households sat together if they are socially distanced!

Now, top marks for making it through all that! Weddings are moving in the right direction but there are still restrictions to think about. Reading these can be disheartening. Still not convinced? Check out our blog for success stories from local couples who were in your shoes! Blog-reading done? Right, time to plan. Whether you're taking advantage of the bigger numbers or keeping it intimate, you're all ensuring that #loveisnotcancelled during the pandemic. Browse the internet for inspo, look at more real weddings on social media and pour over wedding magazines (including GWD, of course). Talk it out with your other half and build your vision for the day… As well as your budget. Tough job but a great way to narrow down your choices. ♥

Our own Scottish Fairytale
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue
Lauren Stephen née Stephen and Liam Stephen always joked that one day they would elope but nobody thought they would actually do it. Lauren tells all about their last minute, secret wedding in Glencoe... “Liam and I got engaged Christmas Eve 2010 but wedding plans got held off when we had our daughter Alba and son Munroe. My maiden name was Stephen so I had the same surname as Liam and the kids so we already felt like a married couple! We were engaged for 10 years before we tied the knot. Getting married was the last piece of the puzzle for us
as a family. With being home during lockdown, the timing felt right and we decided to book it! We didn’t plan on telling anyone- not even our family! Initially, we were just going to go ourselves but we wanted our parents there as witnesses so we invited them at the last minute. There were eight of us in total (us, our two kids and our parents).

We had to tell my sisters when our cover story of a family trip was blown by lockdown! They were really excited and one of them gave me a locket with my grandad’s photo inside to put on my bouquet. I was really close to him and was so happy she thought of getting it for me. There were little things that we hadn’t thought about such as our wedding cake. I ordered my dream cake- which was made of stacked cheeses but that fell through last minute. There was nothing I could do. My sister contacted Gourmet cheeses in Rosemount who supplied some cheese which my mum used to make a cake. It was better than what I had ordered!
by hills. It was pouring with rain but that didn’t bother us. When you go to Glencoe you have to prepare for all four seasons in one day and that’s definitely what we got. The hotel offered to move the wedding inside but we picked Glencoe for the scenery- rain or no rain!
I’m a big fan of Outlander which inspired our themefur shawls, outdoor setting and natural colour scheme. I wanted to keep it quite rustic looking!
On our wedding morning we facetimed my sisters to show them the dress and so they could be a part of the day- there were lots of happy tears!
Even though there were so many rules on what we could and couldn’t do for your wedding, it just felt so relaxing and that’s what I loved about it. We sat by the fire all night and even had a little dance!
The Kingshouse Hotel was stunning and I had always wanted to get married in the highlands. We were wed right in the middle of Glencoe and surrounded
We told our close friends and family that evening over video call. My friends didn’t even know I’d gone away- never mind eloped! I think everyone was in shock

because it had always been a running joke that we would run away and get married but nobody thought we would actually do it! The highlight of my day was seeing how much it meant to our kids. There were happy tears and my daughter said she was so happy that we had finally done it. Everyone asks if we regret eloping but I wouldn’t change a thing. I was worried about telling my family in case it would hurt them but the most important people that day were our kids and honestly I wouldn’t change a thing.♥♥

Wedding exhibitions are the ultimate source of inspiration for your big day. You can find everything you’ll possibly need under one roof and maybe grab some deals while you’re at it! But, like many other businesses during the pandemic, they’ve had to make the move online… Have you checked out the YWE website? As the longest running wedding exhibition in the northeast, it showcases the very best of the local wedding industry. And now on their new purely digital set-up for 2021, you can explore the work of 170 suppliers from the comfort of your own home. You’re guaranteed to pick up some tips and tricks for your big day and you might even find something special you didn’t know you needed. Looking for bridal inspo? Just before Christmas the YWE team collaborated with six fabulous bridalwear companies to bring you a Covid-19-compliant fashion show packed with stunning designs. Check it out on the YWE website!
While you're there, head to the ‘New for 2021’ section to see a showcase of more than 50 talented exhibitors – and videos of their amazing work. From food and drink to stationery and photographers – the YWE website has everything you’ll need. The ongoing uncertainty is hard for engaged couples and the wedding industry alike and it’s impossible to predict what’s going to happen next. But YWE is staying positive and looking ahead to 2022 when it’ll return (fingers crossed!) to TECA for its 25th anniversary. Make sure to pop 15 and 16 January 2022 in your diary! ♥

HENS & STAGS
Hens & Stags A Little Different
Hen and stag parties are normally a big part of pre-wedding celebrations but they’re going to look a bit different for a while longer. That doesn’t mean you can’t have some single fun before tying the knot, though. Here are a few socially distanced ideas…
You’ve probably done your fair share of Zoom quizzes by this stage of lockdown but how about just one more as a virtual pre-wedding celebration? While weekends away and nights out are forced to take a back seat, gathering all your friends for an online meet-up is a great alternative. If quizzes aren’t your thing, why not enjoy a Netflix party or escape room from the comfort of your homes – with some drinking games for added fun? Unlike traditional hen and stag parties where accommodation or activities often force you to cap numbers, there’s no limit here – go wild! Increase to 1/4
There are lots of online workshops available too, including cocktail making and wine or whisky tasting. Bottomless brunch anyone? For an alcohol-free alternative, send out an afternoon tea to enjoy together via FaceTime.

If your bridal party is taking charge, just let them know what you’d like to do. If you’re desperate for a change of scenery, you could enjoy an intimate meal out with up to 6 friends – and include more people when restrictions ease in June (fingers crossed!). Take advantage of entertainment opening up again or meet another household for some fun outdoor games.
www.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
The current situation means you’ll have to think outside the box but you can still have a lot of fun! Treat it as a bit of downtime amidst the whirlwind of wedding planning. It could even be a lovely opportunity to spend some time relaxing with your significant other. Why don’t you both have an at-home pamper day in the lead-up to the big day? ♥

Wear appropriate underwear that won’t shine through or distract from the dresses. Think nude strapless bras and seamless pants!

If you’ve already purchased your wedding shoes, make sure to wear them to all your appointments. Wearing the right height of shoes will give you a better idea of how your outfit will sit.

Weddings are an opportunity for couples and their loved ones to escape from the challenges of the past year. This idea of escapism is key in this season’s bridal wear with designers leaning towards beautiful ballgowns and floral fabrics straight from a fairy tale. Florals don't need to be limited to a spring wedding though, and you don't need to stick with the classic white. It’s your day and you make the rules! But first, you might want to check out the 2021 insights from the latest Bridal Fashion Week. Statement sleeves are going to be big this year with many designers choosing puff and cap sleeves. Full-length lace and billowing options are hot right now, too. Details and textures are also on-trend – how about ruffles and bows. Going with a trendy low back or square neckline? A sleek up-do is the perfect companion.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. Dresses aren’t for everyone and there are lots of alternatives. Many designers now create bridal jumpsuits which are available in a range of styles at different prices. From wide leg to skinny fit, and strapless to a full sleeve – you’re spoilt for choice. They’re also a stylish option if you are looking for a fresh look for your reception or perhaps an engagement party (albeit small or virtual!). Whatever outfit you choose, make sure you schedule in fittings and alterations before your big day.

A few final tips… Consider when and where your wedding will take place when choosing an outfit, as well as your budget and accessories. A beach wedding will have a very different feel from one at a Scottish castle! The government is encouraging couples to pick outdoor venues, so if you opt for this you’ll have to consider the weather too. If it’s going to be cold, you could add a shrug or cape to your outfit. Want to get creative? Go for a personalised denim or biker jacket – and get a matching set for the rest of the bridal party!

What’s the first step?
www.aboynephotographics.com www.iskabirniephotography.co.uk
•
First of all, establish who’ll be paying for the Bridesmaids' or bridesmen’s outfits in advance and set a budget.
•
Got ideas? Share them with your squad – and get their suggestions, too!
•
Look for something that’s flattering for everyone but remember they don’t all need to wear the exact same. It may just be the colour you’re set on, which could be used on different styles of dresses.
•
Browse stores online and pour over magazines for inspiration. A smaller ceremony may call for a simpler outfit. Then again, it’s your big day so why not go wild with pattern or sparkle?!
More top tips... •
Just like picking your wedding dress, think about which shoes, hairstyles and accessories you and your bridal party would like. Even better if it compliments your outfit! Check which stores stock which designers before your visit and have a few in mind to try-on. The stylist in-store will also be able to give you valuable advice.
•
Alternatively, you could look at the occasionwear sections of department stores – You'll also find a great selection of flower girls’ dresses here.

MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE
VIP Mums Guests Weddings are also big days for the mothers of brides and grooms, so it’s important that they look amazing too! Here you’ll find all the essential info to make sure they feel extra glam...
Things to consider •
Due to the large number of postponed weddings, 2021 is going to be a busy year for the industry. Start shopping pronto in case of delays.
•
This includes mothers of the bride and groom, of course! Make sure you’ve got plenty of time to get orders in and make alterations.
•
Talk to the couple in advance so your outfit can complement theirs and those of the bridal party. Think about what you’ll look like next to each other in photos.
•
Also, connect with the other mother of the bride/groom so you can avoid clashing outfits!
•
Think about location and season. You’ll probably want a more lightweight material for a summer wedding and a jacket or sleeve if it’s going to be cooler. www.brodiecountryfare.com

Mothers style Many bridal stores in the northeast have sections especially for mothers of the bride and groom. If you’d like one-onone assistance, make sure to book an appointment. Want something brand new? Angharad Bridal has introduced the Lizabella collection to their store this year. They specialise in flattering designs made from good quality fabrics – and their outfits even come with matching face masks! Alternatively, you could browse department stores that’ll have a range of occasionwear options at varying prices. Although it’s a more expensive option, getting an outfit custom made would meet all of your requirements. Picking an investment piece would give you the opportunity to collaborate with a designer, but again, make sure you start planning early.

There’s lots of flexibility these days when it comes to the wedding outfits for VIP guests. Explore different silhouettes so you know what’s most flattering on you. It’s also important the outfit is comfortable to wear when you are sitting and standing. If it’s going to be a formal affair, why not pick a full-length evening gown or a smart dress? While a microwedding may call for a more laidback style. If you’re following 2021 trends keep an eye out for statement sleeves, smart jumpsuits and trouser suits. www.joyceyoungcollections.co.uk
If you'd love to wear a fascinator or hat, why not visit one of the northeast’s top milliners? Not keen on headgear? Then treat yourself to professional hair styling! Tie in your accessories with your outfit, and maybe use them as a way to add a pop of colour. Think about comfort when picking your shoes – you’ll probably be doing a lot of standing and mingling on the big day. And don’t forget a matching handbag – you’ll need somewhere to keep your lipstick and tissues! ♥

What’s changed •
Think about how Covid-19 restrictions will affect your shopping experience – expect to see hand sanitising stations in stores and remember to wear a face covering.
•
Less people will be allowed in stores and there’ll be fewer fitting rooms to ensure social distancing. So if you’re planning to get a suit or kilt fitted you must book an appointment in advance.
•
Remember, rented items are cleaned before and after you wear them - your safety is the supplier's priority.

Groomswear style and trends When it comes to groomswear, there are a lot of decisions to be made. Would you like a kilt or a suit? Would you prefer to buy or hire? Think about how much time you have and set a budget - then plan with these in mind.

You can't go wrong with a kilt. This traditional option for Scottish weddings lets you put your family tartan on full display. Talk to your partner so you can tie in the colours with their outfit and the other wedding details. It’s up to you if your party wears the same tartan as you or if you want everyone to represent their own clan.

Two grooms? Decide if you want any aspects of your outfits to match or you may wish to keep your look a surprise for the big day! If you fancy something a bit different, why not opt for a pair of tartan trousers? Bold and bright suits are very on-trend in 2021. You can find a suit in pretty much any colour, but deep green or burgundy tones are a great choice. Many designers are featuring checked and printed suits in their collections, which will make you stand out at your wedding. They’ll add a bit of joy to the day - definitely needed this year!

Change
of Plans Deborah and Greg Reid were planning the wedding of their dreams when covid-19 and family illness caused them to change their plans. Deborah tells us about rearranging a wedding in six weeks, the intimacy of a small wedding and her DIY bridal leather jacket… "Greg proposed in May 2019 after being together for five years. I had hinted that I wanted to get married but as many do, Greg wanted to do it his own way. He took me to Knoydart, with our dog Rolo for a holiday and popped the question. Of course I said yes! We had planned to get married in October 2021 but moved it to 21 December 2020 after my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We really wanted him there on our big day and as we were eager to get married anyway, we decided to rearrange the wedding in just six weeks! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue

Amazingly we got everything rearranged in time and most of our suppliers were able to accommodate the new date. We only really had to change our venue! Our new venue was Meldrum house. We had 15 guests (close family and friends) which was lucky as a few days later the rules on weddings changed to only allow five guests! We didn’t realise when we booked but we got married on the shortest day of the year! Thankfully, I was right on time for my wedding- actually I was probably early which is a first! During our wedding we did a Quaich and hand fasting ceremony which meant we literally tied the knot with a wee dram of whisky to finish! As there was less of us at Meldrum house we got married in the little dining room rather than the big ball room, which was much more intimate. After the ceremony we went outside for confetti photos with our wee dog Rolo. We had to have him come for pictures, he’s like our baby! We then went off and got some pictures taken of just the two of us to make the most of what daylight was left. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue
Everyone who couldn’t be there put video messages on a website. We were only able to watch a few because they made us cry! One of the messages was from Greg’s sister who lives in Australia with her family as they couldn’t be there in person.

We live streamed the ceremony so they could be a part of our special day! I wasn’t sure what to wear for a winter wedding- I know boleros and shawls are popular but I wanted something personal. I painted my black leather jacket myself for our wedding! I started with a template that said Mrs Reid and then I added flowers to it. I wore it for some pictures and outside when it got colder. It’s a nice keepsake too! We never would have thought of getting married four days before
Christmas but it was actually great! It was stressful planning our wedding during a pandemic but you have to look at the bright side- the fact we halved our costs as well as the guest list saved us so much money! Having my dad there was so important! The highlight of the day was my dad walking me down the aisle- it was a dream come true! ♥

When you think of wedding flowers your mind probably goes straight to the bride’s bouquet. But floral arrangements of all sorts can be used to brighten up the whole event. From buttonholes to centrepieces, here’s what you need to know…
Each bouquet is created to suit your own style. Valerie will ensure they look amazing in your wedding photos!

Think about which flowers you love and talk to your florist about all the small details – your budget, any minimum costs (especially relevant at the mometn with smaller weddings), delivery and set-up options to name a few. Your bouquet will be with you all day so think about size – definitely don’t want to be weighed down! Will your bridal party need bouquets too? How about floral baskets if you're having flower girls?
Transform your venue Florists are like magicians when it comes to bringing your venue to life. And it may be possible to use your ceremony flowers again in the reception space – a great way to cut costs! Think about eye-catching centrepieces and stunning aisle décor, too.

Take advantage of flowers for those extra little details. Pick out some of the blooms used in your bouquet and add them to your cake or make corsages for the mothers of the happy couple.

Dried flowers: Pinterest is packed with dried flower inspo – popular due to its longevity. The rustic textures would be a great addition to your autumn/winter wedding. Greenery: If florals aren’t your thing, why not explore other greenery? Eucalyptus, grasses and ferns are striking, and you can mix in some colour with berries – a lovely buttonhole option, too.

Old school faves: Classic flowers have stood the test of time for a reason. It’s all about personal taste, but you can’t go wrong with roses, tulips or calla lilies.
•
Artificial: Silk and paper flowers are being picked more and more often for weddings. They won’t wilt, tend to be cheaper and are easier to colour match. Added bonus: they’re perfect for allergy sufferers! ♥

Metal: Gold – yellow, rose or white – is a classic choice but for something more modern, go for silver, platinum or palladium. Look for a band that won’t clash with your engagement ring.
•
Stones: How about some extra sparkle? Diamond eternity rings are timeless or you might prefer a pop of colour – maybe incorporate your birthstones?
•
Details: If you’d like something more subtle go for a milgrain border of tiny beads or a combination of different metals. Or you may pick a concave ring design or stacking style that fits perfectly with your engagement ring.
•
Personal touches: What about engraving? Get a special message inside your ring to remind you that you finally got here, or add your partner's name. If you do it in secret it’ll be a nice surprise for your other half at the alter!

If you'd like your rings to be truly unique, look into designing your own. Just make sure you start the process at least six weeks before your wedding.
Something old, something new… When picking jewellery, think about your outfit (s) as a starting point. What extra little details would finish off your overall look? Bear in mind that this could be a little different from what you originally imagined if you've toned down on formality outfit-wise for a smaller event.
www.jonathanaddie.com
Check out what's available locally or find out if there are any special family heirlooms on offer. Jewellery isn't just for the happy couple - it's the perfect gift for those who've been there for you during wedding planning. If numbers allow them to your big day, how about something they can wear? Think earrings, kilt pins and cufflinks!

Looking forward Your rings are forever, so it’s important to keep them in tip-top shape. If dirt and grime buildup it can cause degradation and discolouration, which you definitely don’t want!

So, make sure to regularly clean your rings. You can do this at home every so often (ask local jewellers for their tips) but also take them to be professionally cleaned a couple of times a year. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue

All Worth it in the End After Zoe Wilson and Iain Moffat’s original wedding date fell through just eight weeks before the big day, they weren’t sure if it would ever go ahead. Zoe talks through the highs and lows of rearranging a lockdown wedding… “I actually found the receipt for the engagement ring in Iain’s pocket so I knew the proposal was coming! He proposed in Nairn in February, on the beach. It was lovely but obviously wasn’t a big surprise! We planned to get married on 23 May 2020 but eight weeks before, lockdown meant it was cancelled. We rescheduled for 23 October… And it went ahead!

Everything was so up in the air beforehand as lockdown rules kept changing, but luckily all of our vendors were happy to reschedule to our new date. On the day we just forgot everything we’d gone through. It was all worth it and our wedding was wonderful. On the original date it had been freezing cold, miserable and raining but thankfully the October date was scorching. We even had our drinks reception outside... Not bad for autumn! My dress was even more magical than I remembered and the venue was amazing. Given the circumstances Banchory Lodge really excelled themselves. They waited on us hand and foot, and really wanted to make our day perfect despite the ever-changing restrictions. We decided to do a reveal before the ceremony so we could see each other without our masks on. Then as I walked into the hotel I spotted people on the balconyand they were clapping for me! I burst into tears- after such a hard year it felt like people were congratulating us on going through with it. It was really special. In the end we had 18 guests (close family, bridal party and some family friends) plus the registrar and photographer. I was delighted to have the intimacy of a small wedding and believed in my heart that everyone who couldn’t be there were with us in spirit.
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue
Our beautiful wedding cake was covered in flowers made of sugar which I now have in boxes around my house. It’s perfect to have as a keepsake from our special day. We bought confetti cannons from Marie Curie, who’d looked after my grandad in his final days. They were a nice touch and knowing it went towards supporting a good cause was really special. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get photographs during the ceremony without our masks, but in a way it’s more authentic: The masks will remind us of how things were when we got married. (A family friend actually made our masks. She sourced a matching tartan to Iain’s kilt for his and used leftover material from bridesmaid dress alterations to make theirs). Masks aside, it actually felt like – for just one day – the pandemic didn’t exist!” ♥

If you can, visit your venue (or venues if you’re still deciding between a few on the shortlist!) before booking so you can get a feel for the place and the people. Every venue will be operating slightly differently, so don’t just turn up – get in touch and ask for all the info you need to book a visit. If you don’t feel comfortable going in person, or they won’t allow it, set up a virtual viewing. Many venues have video tours on their website and Maryculter House has gone a step further with exclusive virtual viewings. You can also swoon over the galleries on each hotel’s website, and any pictures they’re tagged in on social media from the comfort of your own sofa. Great for getting an idea of how other couples have set up their weddings in the same place – especially if the wedding is smaller than originally planned in a big space.

Look into non-Covid-19 restrictions: Being consumed with the pandemic, you can be forgiven for forgetting the ‘normal’ wedding planning checklists. So, remember these historic buildings often come with a rule or two. Share your décor plans with the wedding manager so you know what will be possible. Are there restrictions on flash photography? And what about heels? You don’t want to ruin the manicured grass or antique flooring! Ask if there are specific suppliers you need to use, or extras you’ll have to hire in – tables, chairs and tableware, for example.

ACCOMMODATION
Home Away Accommodation from Home Of course, a smaller wedding means fewer guests to consider when it comes to accommodation, but you’ll still need to be on the ball…
A wedding is always a good excuse to spend more time with your nearest and dearest - especially if you've barely seen them due to lockdown. You could turn the event into a mini-break for everyone but make sure there is availability at your accommodation of choice. Book well in advance!
www.skene-house.co.uk
Picking a hotel for your wedding means there’s on-site accommodation – bonus! Or you may prefer to hire a lodge, cottage or serviced apartment – a welcome change from a year of staying
at home. Just make sure to follow the rules on indoor gatherings. Think about where you want to sleep the night before your wedding. Want to follow tradition and stay separately, or would you prefer to be together? You may be more comfortable getting ready at home – but consider how far away your venue is. Do you want to be travelling far on your wedding day? Or would you rather be pampered in the lap of luxury at your dream venue? ♥

Finding Event Accessories Inspiration You may have had to cut back on some parts of your wedding but there are other parts of planning you can still have lots of fun with – décor for one. Don’t know where to start? That’s OK – here are a couple of cheat sheets!
Five steps to get your creative juices flowing 1. Look for inspiration everywhere! Magazines and the internet are a great starting point – have you read the GWD blog? – and will help you build a vision for your big day. Don’t just focus on weddings either – the décor used at different events might be perfect for you.

2. Talk to the experts - You’re spoiled for choice in the northeast when it comes to event accessory suppliers. Get an idea of what you can achieve from their websites and social media or talk to them directly. With their know how, they’ll have lots of suggestions for centrepieces, chair coverings and welcome signs to name a few. They can really help make your dream wedding a reality. 3. Let your venue take the lead. You may have picked it because of its décor, which gives you a great starting point – it may only need a few finishing touches. Take full advantage of your surroundings but remember to talk to your venue in advance, so you know what you can and can’t do. On the other hand, if you picked a blank canvas you can really make it your own. 4. Do you have a theme in mind? This will narrow down what props you’ll need as decorations. Micro-weddings and minimalism go hand in hand so you may decide to keep it simple with just a few personal touches. 5. Many associate pastel shades with spring weddings and deeper tones for autumnal 'I do's but don't be restricted by seasons or trends. It's your day so pick what you love!

Why not get a personalised pinata for all to enjoy? Or hire a mobile bar that lets you create your own drinks? Ice cream carts are popular but firm favourites. Our wedding was planned for 21 March 2020 but we had to cancel it the day before due to lockdown and a family bereavement. We rescheduled for February 6 2021 and wanted to keep everything the same including Norwood Hall as our venue. Originally, we hoped to have 80 wedding guests plus more for the reception but on the day we were only allowed five people. We knew we would be restricted on numbers but we didn’t realise quite how much! A lot of our family wanted us to postpone again until next year but it felt like so long since we got engaged and we couldn’t wait any longer! The night before our wedding my bridesmaids organised a surprise virtual hen party. They sent my mum round with a basket of treats and we had some prosecco and played games. It was a really fun evening! On our big day we had five people there in total. The two of us, the registrar, and both of our mums who were our witnesses. Our little dog Luna came along too. Despite everything we wanted a traditional wedding so we got ready separately and met at the venue. I still got butterflies before the wedding despite the severely reduced guest list. I was so nervous saying my vows in front of my partner. I can’t imagine having to say them in front of all our friends and family! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue

When we got back to the house there were people were on the street with confetti congratulating us. Due to the lockdown, there were no restaurants open so our friend prepared and delivered a four course meal. We got to sit in our kitchen and have our wedding meal just the two of us as husband and wife. We were still dressed up and spent the evening together making cocktails! After our meal we watched video messages from all of the people who were meant to be at our wedding. It was lovely to watch everyone send their well wishes. We had made limoncello as wedding favours so we sent them to our family and friends with a note asking them to cheers to us. A lot of people sent a picture of them doing their shot and toasting us and we even had a few shots left over for ourselves! A lot of people say they don’t remember their wedding as there is so much going on but I remember every second of our day. It was so special that we got to spend the whole day together!

Wedding cake options really are endless, so your best shout for finding your dream cake is contacting one of the northeast’s top bakers. Design and taste are equally important but everyone has their own preferences. Stick with tradition and choose a stunning white tiered cake or if you’re feeling more adventurous, add a pop of colour. Different tiers let you and your partner both pick your favourite types of cake – and you’re more likely to have something all your guests will enjoy too. Fruit cake is a classic option and lasts longer, but don’t be scared to mix up the flavours. You could even send out slices to the guests who couldn’t be there on the day. Bet they’d love a sweet doorstep delivery!

Lots of tiers means you’ll have a lot of cake. But for a microwedding you could ask your cake-maker to create smaller layers. Alternatively, 'show' tiers create the illusion of a bigger cake and allow more space for decorations. Alternatively, you may decide on a micro-cake for your micro-wedding. You can make a real statement with minicakes and cupcake towers, and they're easy to hand out.

Why not have individual cakes on each table – perhaps as a centrepiece? – to cut back on sharing. It would make a great dessert choice served with tea and coffee to finish off your meal. You can still do the traditional cakecutting at your reception. A cake table is easy to set up and everyone can watch from a safe distance.

What's On-trend • Square cakes: If traditional round tiers aren’t your thing, square-shaped cakes are an eye-catching and sophisticated alternative. • Naked cakes: These rustic yet modern creations aren't going anywhere! And if you're not a sweet tooth, it's a great way to skip the icing.

• Textured icing: How about ruffles? It'll create an effortless rustic look, perfect for a more laid-back micro-wedding. • Icing accents: Gold or silver details add a touch of glamour, while white and green is very on-trend (explore our garden party inspo on page 66!).

Cake décor A plain and simple cake is a timeless option, but you may want to jazz it up with some decorations.
• Florals: Adorning the cake with real flowers can be very effective and is an easy way to tie in your theme. • Cake toppers: Icing figurines of the happy couple are a lot of fun or you may prefer personalised lettering – your new surname perhaps? – that can add some colour and sparkle.

• Cake stands: This is a must if your cake is going to be your table centrepiece and there are so many options to choose from. Stick with a traditional glass design or continue the rustic theme with a striking treestump or customised crate.

CATERING
Comfort Catering Food
Cheers! Share a toast with all your guests on the day. Instead of sharing bottles of wine or champagne, stay safe with individual miniatures.
While music and dance have to take a back seat at wedding receptions, everyone can still enjoy the food and drink!
Embrace intimate meals Wedding receptions are all about sitdown meals. Tables will need to be spread out with max. two households at each but you can still create an intimate experience. It’s probably best to avoid buffets and sharing platters for a while longer but a more traditional meal doesn’t mean you have to stick with classic food options. The past year has been stressful for everyone, so your wedding day is the perfect occasion to fully embrace comfort foods. Create a fun menu of all your favourites for you and your guests to enjoy.

Talk to your venue about their catering options. Hotels will have their own kitchens, while some castles and stately homes will have suppliers they work with often. But do remember that outside caterers and staff will be included in your attendee list. With less mouths to feed, the chef may be more adventurous, so talk to them about what they can do. Pre-made individual food hampers for each guest would reduce sharing (and be so cute!) but remember to ask about any dietary requirements. www.byrhea.co.uk

Pre-wedding tastings may not be possible but some caterers are sending out tasting boxes you can enjoy at home – definitely worth asking about! ♥

CEREMONIES
The Main Ceremonies Event
You made it - the moment you'll finally become a married couple! With your ceremony, you can go for a traditional ceremony or pick something more original – whatever feels right for both of you...
What type of ceremony? • Civil: The most popular ceremony style conducted in Scotland. You’ll be able to truly show your personalities with help from your registrar. Your ceremony can take place in any non-religious location.
• Church of Scotland: The details of a religious ceremony will mainly be decided by the celebrant. The location will need to be approved by your minister but we’re lucky in Scotland to have more freedom than elsewhere in the UK. Anyone can marry in this religious service, even if you believe in another faith.
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue
CEREMONIES
• Roman Catholic: The ceremony must be in a place of worship and either you or your partner will have been baptised. If one of you isn’t Catholic, you’ll have to get in touch with your local bishop, who might suggest marriage classes. • Interfaith: The ideal solution for the couple with different beliefs. What you do during the ceremony is completely up to you, but there may be some religious aspects you want to include. • Humanist: This ceremony style is much more personal, and you’ll make most of the decisions yourselves. It’s not religious but you can incorporate rituals if they mean a lot to you.

CEREMONIES
Remember…
www.byrhea.co.uk
You’ll have to complete and return a marriage notice form (and pay the fee) no more than 29 days before the wedding. Posting the notice is your best option at the moment. You’ll also need a marriage schedule for your ceremony. You’ll need to pick it up seven days before if you’re having a religious ceremony, but your registrar will bring it along for civil ceremonies.
www.deesidephoto.co.uk
On the day Due to Covid-19 you’ll have to keep your ceremony as short as possible. You can’t have any singing but talk to your registrar about including readings – a lovely way to personalise the ceremony. It’s up to you if you want to write your own vows - just check what you need to include to make it official. And it’s not a legal requirement but most couples choose to exchange rings during the ceremony, too. You’ll sign the marriage schedule right at the end of the ceremony – and then you’ll be married! Just make sure to return it to your local registrar within three days. ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue

Every year, our friendly and experienced registrars offer hundreds of couples advice, guidance and reassurance every step of the way until the Wedding Day. We delight in ensuring that every marriage ceremony is meaningful, unique and personally tailored to your individual wishes. You will never forget the moment you said “I Do”…! What is a civil marriage ceremony? A civil marriage ceremony is a ‘non-religious’ marriage ceremony, as traditional or bespoke as you wish it to be. Who officiates a civil marriage ceremony? Civil marriages are officiated by a registrar or assistant registrar who will assist you on every step of your journey to marriage – from accepting your marriage notices, creating your marriage ceremony with you, and issuing your marriage certificate after the big day. Registrars are unique in our ability to help with both the legal and the ceremonial aspects of marriage. Where and when can a civil marriage take place? A civil marriage can take place on any date, at any time, and in any imaginable location within the Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire area. We can even hold ceremonies at sea…! Aberdeen City Registrars 0300 020 0292 www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/registrars
Can we choose what to have in our ceremony? Absolutely - you have tremendous choice in tailoring your marriage ceremony to make the occasion even more personal and to your taste. From readings to musical performances, from quaichs to handfasting, we love to get creative with couples, offering advice, guidance and reassurance as you decide upon the ceremony that’s right for you – at no extra cost. And no matter how colourful the occasion, we always ensure that the moment you say “I do” is a solemn and sincere commitment between two people in love. Can we include a religious reading? Yes, you can. Traditionally, civil marriages were entirely non-religious. Today, a religious reading or a song may be permitted during proceedings. Please discuss this with your registrar.

It’s tricky to work out what you can and can’t do at your wedding amidst the ever-changing rules. Music recordings are preferred over live performers but this does mean you’re not using up more of your attendee limit. Keep the volume
low so voices don’t have to be raised – especially during your vows. Include all your favourite songs in a playlist that’ll help set the tone of your wedding – but no singing along!

If you have your heart set on a live singer consider putting up a screen and make sure the room is well-ventilated. Alternatively, musicians (non-blown instruments only!) would add loads of joy! Scottish weddings and bagpipes go hand-in-hand and they’re luckily the perfect instrument for a socially distanced performance. You can still be
piped into your reception and keep that wee bit of tradition.
Reception extras You won’t have a dancefloor packed with guests but the newlyweds can still enjoy their first dance. Check out the GWD blog and take inspiration from Hayley and Ross who shared their first dance outside surrounded by friends and family.

Why not entertain with drinks? How about a G&T station or a “Pimp Your Prosecco” bar? Super-easy to set up but you may need a designated drinks server to avoid over-crowding. If cocktails are more your taste, why not create your own to be served on the day. A great way to add a bit of personality and you can have a lot of fun brainstorming cocktail/ mocktail recipes and names. One way to include your guests who couldn’t be there is through video messages. Ask everyone to pre-record clips to be edited together and play them at the reception. Something extra special to keep, too!

Finding the one There are lots of incredibly talented photographers in the northeast - just look at the stunning images featured in GWD! They each have their own style and approach to shooting weddings, so do your homework to find out who's perfect for you. The GWD website is the perfect starting point to find local photographers. Follow the handy links to their sites where you’ll find examples of their snaps. Remember, they'll probably only have space to show their very best work. It's worth asking to see a full album so ask what else they can
show you. Narrow down your choices by reading testimonials, talking to others who've been in your position and quizzing your venue on who they love. What do you want your photographer to capture on the day? Whether you're after traditional posed shots or something more candid, find a snapper who has the style you want. Maybe a mixture of both. Photo editing will also influence your decision. Some will include black and white shots or fun filters. Others keep them as natural as possible with only slight corrections to polish them off.

Meeting up with photographers before the wedding will be tricky right now, so don't be afraid to ask for a video chat to get to know your potential suppliers better. Be honest and talk openly so they can tell you whether they think they're right for you, too. Communication is key! Found the one for you? Then take them up on a pre-wed shoot if they offer it. A great opportunity to get to know them - and get some practice in!
Which package? From tiered packages to a simple flat rate, get clued up on all the details before signing on the dotted line:
•
Price: Consider your budget and find out what you’ll get for that price. Most will need a deposit or booking fee and then the rest of the payment before the wedding.
•
Extra costs: Depending on the location of your venue compared to that of the photographer, they might need travel expenses. And check whether albums are part of your package or an optional extra.
•
Number of photos: Depending on your photographer and the package you pick you can expect between 400 and 900 photographs.
•
Getting the pics: You’ll normally be sent a USB or a personal log in to see all your photos on their website check with your photographer first if you're going to share with others!
•
How long: Each photographer will have specifics on their website, but you’ll tend to wait four to eight weeks. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Planning your pics Yes, this is a job for you - not just the photographer! Prep a list of what you’d like captured and anything you don’t want to be pictured too. You might be limited on time so knowing what you want is vital. www.susanrenee.co.uk
www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk ❦ The Lockdown Issue
www.byrhea.co.uk
There’s a good chance your photographer has shot a wedding at your venue before. They’ll know all the best photo spots but share your ideas, too.
You might need to skip the getting ready photos due to limitations on indoor numbers – but that doesn’t stop you from taking some candid shots of your own.
Social distancing shouldn’t effect your photographer too much – they don’t need to be close to capture amazing shots. However group photos will have to be two metres apart (unless you’re in a bubble) and preferably outdoors. Your photographer may have already done a few lockdown weddings, so can keep everyone on the right track.
If you have space for an extra body, adding a second photographer means you could capture different angles. A lot of northeast photography companies include two shooters as standard but do double-check. Number two could shoot guest’s reactions while you’re lead photographer focuses on the happy couple.

Want more memories? Book a second day with your photographer without the time pressure. Return to your venue or pick a new location. Either way, it’s a great excuse to wear your wedding attire again! Remember, it’s a long day for your photographer(s) – treat them to a hot meal!
To video or not to video? Although it would involve an extra person, filming your day is definitely worth considering. Ask your photographer for recommendations as they’ll have collaborated with some great videographers in the past. Just like your photos, you’ll have to decide what style of recording you’d like. Would you prefer a traditional wedding video or a more relaxed documentary style?

Spend some time getting lost in local suppliers' portfolios – and then contact your faves. If you’re planning a sequel celebration in the future, why not host a screening of your wedding video? It’d be lovely to relive those special memories with your nearest and dearest.
Thinking of streaming your wedding? Amazing idea – here’s a couple who did it earlier. Virtual ceremonies are on the rise as they’re a great way to include more of your friends and family. How good a surprise would it be for them to open their inbox and find a link to you saying: "I do"? You can stream the ceremony yourself – via Zoom, YouTube or Facebook – but prep everything in advance and do a test. And pick a volunteer guest to press the buttons!

If that sounds scary, think about a trusted local supplier. Hiring a pro takes the pressure off you and your guests – but will be included in your guest limit.

Like photography, lots of video packages are available so do your digging and don't be afraid to ask questions about things like this: Sound: Microphones may be needed to pick up all sounds – don’t want everyone to miss the vows. Internet: A good connection is a must! Does the company have its own internet source? Or will you need to rely on the venue’s WIFI signal?

You might prefer no phones out at all so everyone can be more present. That means your photographer can capture everything and share it all at a later date.
