If a castle or stately home isn’t calling your name and a hotel doesn’t quite fit your vision, why not try venturing outside the box? There are unlimited options when it comes to getting married in Scotland so get adventurous and think big!

Chart your own way

If you’re a fan of the high seas, how about taking to the water for your nuptials? It’s possible to get married aboard a boat in Scottish waters so a chartered ride up the northeast coast would make for a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop to your big day. You can choose from several historic ships docked at Glasgow, Edinburgh or Dundee that could head north and make waves for your wedding celebration! Worried your guests may get seasick? Opt for some speedboats or row boats to take you to a dreamy, local beach or riverside venue instead!

Alternatively, what about a steam train wedding? Make your reception memorable by hiring one exclusively for you and treat your guests to an elegant dining experience in one of the catering carriages. Royal Deeside Railway offers a warm and inviting chartered train service or you can book the exclusive use of their comfortably cosy static MK2 coaches. Plus, the wonderful staff are happy to work with you to make your dream a reality. Yay! Still talking trains, if a timeless Edwardian elegance is more your style, look no further than the Royal Scotsman Belford for a journey that’s totally tailored to you. Once all the details are finalised, they’ll take care of everything. All you need to do is gather your guests at the platform!

The great outdoors

If you feel most at home breathing in the fresh air, perhaps an outside wedding is for you? An outdoor option is available at most venues but if you want to make sure you’re covered for the unpredictable Scottish weather, a marquee at a location of your choice might provide the perfect balance. We love Waterside, set on South Lasts Farm just outside of Aberdeen city – check it out! Going further afield, ruins, woodlands, sandy beaches and hilltop venues also fit the bill here, and you’ll find a marquee or yurt will help bring the outside in for your reception. One quick warning: Be sure to check if you need permission from landowners before you set your heart on a specific spot. But hook up with a northeast marquee supplier early on and they’ll keep you right, for sure.

Hobby enthusiasts

Are you two joined at the hip when it comes to extra-curricular activities? Whether it’s football, Munro bagging, whisky or something else, why not incorporate this into your venue? You’ll find many sporting grounds, National Trust of Scotland buildings (they have some breathtaking hidden gems on their books), distilleries, breweries and more are available for hire. Ideal for those couples who embrace their hobbies wholeheartedly – and want to share that with their guests.

With stunning, uninterrupted views out over the Hill of Fayre and surrounding Banchory and Aberdeenshire countryside, the Cowshed offers mouth-watering good food, showcasing Scottish produce at its very best and prepared by our team of award winning chefs – you and your guests will enjoy a day to remember.

Rural and rustic

Embrace the on-trend cottage-core vibes with a truly rustic wedding venue, whether that be in a converted barn or a field full of flowers. Perfect your day the organic way with charming fairy lights, hay bales and a horsedrawn cart. Look at ready-to-personalise, renovated barns in Aberdeenshire, like the rustic-luxe Schivas Steading. Many can even provide accommodation for guests – bonus! There are even some hybrid options – have you seen the barnquee at the House of Elrick? This uniquely creative space is a new collab with the superstars at 3 Tiers Creative and gives you a cosy atmosphere blended with the outdoor appeal of a marquee. The best of both worlds!

Seeking something smaller and more intimate? A traditional cottage, botanical garden (Duthie Park’s Winter Gardens, anyone?) or a wood cabin are all great choices for a close-knit venue.

So, did any of these options pique your interest? Have you got an ‘out there’ venue for your big day? Either way, consider sharing your story with us here at Grampian Wedding Directory. We’d love to hear all about it and who knows, you could be our next cover stars! ♥

With a marquee from Esslemont Marquees, you can host your wedding almost anywhere! Many couples dream of a unique wedding at home, in the grounds of a historic venue or at a local beauty spot . Our marquees give you a blank canvas to create your dream wedding.
