THIS TRADITION’S GONE TOPSY-TURVY. Stages’ Panto tradition gives the Lewis Carroll classic a fresh new Houston spin! As her quinceañera approaches, Alice (not Alicia) questions the tradition and pushes away her culture. But once she falls down the rabbit hole, the magical world around her celebrates all that makes her Alicia. Created by Houston’s own TEATRX—and studded with parodies of Shakira, JLo, Bad Bunny, and more—Panto Alicia in Wonderland topples headfirst into wonder and fun.

TUTSA looks to blend the Christmas: modern and the classic Simple with Cinderella 5 Ways to Avoid Toy Overload written by Sarah Lyons
The Four Gift Philosophy This gift-giving philosophy goes like this: “Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.” This idea gives kids a variety of gifts without going overboard. It’s practical, affordable, and fun. Best of all it’s easy to shop for, without the risk of impulse buying.
Give An Experience Instead of spending a lot of money on toys that may or may not get played with, consider giving the gift of an experience. Ideas may include a membership to a local attraction like a zoo or children’s museum, classes that the child would enjoy (dance, art, music, etc), tickets to a show, movie passes, gift cards, a special night on the town, or even a vacation. This gift idea is great because it can be given to the entire family and is sure to create memories that last longer than an easily forgotten toy.
A Family Gift Try giving a gift the entire family can enjoy. Some ideas could include movies, books, board games, electronics, or a swing set. Individual gifts that go along with the family gift could make it more personal. For example, if the family gift is a new video game system, each child might receive a game of interest to them to go along with it. The benefit to this type of gift is it encourages quality family time
A Heartfelt Gift These types of gifts are special because they are so personal. One Christmas my grandma made all of her children and grandchildren a special recipe book that included family recipes that had been passed down for generations. It was a gift that cost little but was priceless to the recipient. These gifts require more time than money, but will keep giving for many years..
One Big Gift For some kids there is one large, costly gift that they have on their list. Perhaps they want it more than anything else. Consider getting each child the one larger gift they really want and forgo all the smaller extra gifts. This will be a good lesson in the cost of items and help them appreciate the gifts they do receive more. During the holidays, It is so easy to shower those we love with gifts; but when January comes around, you often find yourself surrounded by toy overload. These strategies will not only reduce the excess toys but will also help your children appreciate the gifts they do receive while enjoying the true reason for Christmas. 21 WAYS TO
Banish The Winter Blues THIS YEAR & EVERY YEAR written by Christina Katz
Even if the weather outside is not frightful, the blues can take a parent down any time during the darker months of winter. If you are subject to the holiday blahs, a post-holiday crash, or gloomy moods all winter long, this list of blues-busters can come to your emotional rescue.
There are lots of things you can try to lift winter doldrums, so never accept feeling down as a foregone conclusion. Improving your mood is possible and you and your family deserve to thrive no matter what the season of the year. Of course, you cannot control how you feel, but you can control what you do about how you feel. So get ready to experiment until you find some strategies that work for you.
1. Be honest with yourself. If you are feeling down, it's okay. You'll bounce back from the blues sooner if you can admit, at least to yourself, that something or some things are bothering you. You don't have to do anything yet, simply try to identify any sources of disappointment or discouragement.
2. Tell someone you can trust. Never keep the blues to yourself no matter what the severity. Usually the sooner you share your feelings with someone you trust, the sooner you experience relief. If no one is available right this minute,
write imaginary letters to someone safe in the interim.
to just the must-dos can create some immediate relief.
3. Practice acceptance.
6. Let other adults shoulder their own responsibilities.
There is no point getting angry at yourself. This will only make you feel worse. Instead, admit your powerlessness over whatever feelings are coming up. Everyone has feelings and accepting them no matter what is part of being human.
4. Get plenty of rest. When you feel down, getting enough sleep is crucial although getting too much sleep can work against improving your mood. Determine what amount of sleep helps you feel energized for the next day and set the alarm for this amount each night.
5. Let the sky hold itself up for a while. Sometimes blues are brought on by stress. The first thing a parent can do to create some relief is let go of every responsibility that is not yours. Make a to-do list and then cross off everything you don't have to do right now. Narrowing your responsibilities
10 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE December 2023
You cannot be responsible for the happiness of others beyond your dependents. If you have put yourself in any care-taking roles to grown adults, quit those jobs now. The only exception is a care-giving role for someone incapacitated whom you have willingly volunteered to attend.
7. Ask for help. Don't be a martyr. People who feel comfortable asking for and receiving help are usually not sufferers. If you can't speak up, it's time to shake off any victim tendencies you may have and start standing up for yourself. 8. Address anger. If you don't believe it is acceptable for you to express anger, unexpressed feelings are going to hurt you in the long run. Ask yourself, "What am I not allowed to feel angry about?" And then start letting any disallowed feelings out in a constructive manner.
9. Move some energy. Energy needs to move. If you are feeling down and not exercising, then this is an easy fix. Don't think about it too much, just move. You can think later, when you are assessing how much better you feel.
10. Express what you want. It's true that you can't always get what you want. But you should always be able to get what you need. After you have fulfilled your basic needs, it's time to start asking for what you want.
11. Take responsibility. If you are thinking that the attention of others should be riveted on what you need and want, that's backwards. Let others off the hook and reclaim your happiness. You are the creator of a more joyful life. No one can accomplish this for you.
12. Avoid alcohol and other depressants. Depressants are only going to make you feel worse. This may be hard to recognize if you are in the habit of selfmedicating. You may think your
W h at A b o u t T h e C a n ' t- G e t- O u t- O f - B e d B l u e s ? If you are feeling so low that you consistently don't want to get out of bed, it's time to talk to a doctor and a therapist. A doctor can help you recover your chemical health and a therapist can help recover your emotional health. Schedule regular appointments with both types of professionals until you regain a consistent stable mood. Don't settle for anything less than feeling good. If you do not feel good, it's time to get help. Shame keeps people from seeking help for mood disorders. But when you have a family and they depend on you, you don't have the luxury of not taking quality care of yourself. If you can't do it for yourself, get help initially for your loved ones. With the right support, and an ongoing program of new habits, you'll soon be taking better care of yourself. Because you deserve it. We all do.
"medicine" makes you feel better, not worse. But if you felt better, you would not need to self-medicate in the first place. So stop.
let the voicemail pick up, don't respond promptly to texts or emails, and slacken any volleys of communication with anyone who brings you down.
13. Eat smaller, healthier meals.
16. Stop guilt-tripping yourself.
If feeling down affects your appetite in either direction, see if you can reset your metabolism and blood sugar by having smaller, healthier meals throughout the day rather than just a few large meals.
Don't let anyone manipulate you into apologizing for increasing self-care. Steer clear of those who use guilt to try to control your choices. When you stop seeking approval from others, you can improve your behaviors and start feeling better. Your primary job in life is taking excellent care of yourself. There is no need to apologize.
14. Create a prayer practice. You do not have to be religious to pray. Even if you are an atheist, you can surrender to a greater good or a higher power. Try getting down on your knees and simply asking for whatever is troubling you to be removed. Turn over everything stressing you and ask for help to make room for good to flow in.
15. Steer clear of complainers. One thing you can't afford when you are feeling shaky is the company of negative people. Without explanation,
17. Build inspiration into your daily life. You can overwrite negative voices with positive messages. Opportunities for daily inspiration abound in the Internet age. Set up daily uplifting messages to your inbox, listen to radio shows or stream videos that make you feel good.
18. Focus on appreciation. No matter how badly you feel, surely there is something that
makes you feel good. There is nothing wrong with feeling grateful for a cup of coffee, as long as you really mean it. Notice your appreciation, feel it, share it, write it down. Do whatever you can to make feelings of gratitude bigger and longer lasting.
19. Make a list of the happiest moments from your life. Own what made each moment powerful to you. Forget what others felt about those moments. Let the rest of the past go. No need to hang onto any unhappy memories.
20. Switch to glass half full. When you notice yourself focusing on or expressing the negative, pause. It's just a habit and habits can be changed. Find something-anythingpositive to focus on in the moment. If nothing strikes you, engage in one of your new constructive habits, which will create a positive shift you can then appreciate.
21. Do something joyous every day. Everyone has activities they do that cause them to forget time and get into a flow state. What are yours? Try to work in at least a half hour a day of flow time, no matter what else is going on. Author, journalist, and writing coach, Christina Katz has known many who have suffered from the winter blues. She hopes this article will encourage them to reach out for help sooner rather than later, so they can experience relief and rediscover the joys of winter.
WHAT KIDS LEARN FROM
COLLECTIONS written by Sarah Lyons
My kids love to collect everything from rocks to stickers. They bring my kids joy and entertainment but they also seem to take up space and collect dust. Are there benefits to encouraging the kids to collect items? While these treasures seem like garbage to me, they can be a great opportunity for kids to research and learn about things that interest them and experience the world around them. Here are some great reasons to encourage your child’s collection.
TEACHES RESPONSIBILITY Kids who collect items will need to learn to be responsible for them. They will sort, take care, and find creative ways to display the things they are interested in. They will need to make sure they are well cared for and stored correctly
so they don’t get lost or broken. This will help them learn responsibility and organization.
EXPERIENCE THE WORLD AROUND THEM Kids who collect items are
12 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE December 2023
more likely to spend time reading about, sorting, and discussing their collections. As kids learn about and research their collections they will experience the world around them. While collecting rocks, kids will learn about science. While researching stamps or coins they will learn about history. A leaf or shell collection
will teach them about nature and a baseball card collection teaches them about sports and math as they study and compare statistics.
SHARED EXPERIENCE Kids who collect items can bond with others who share
Season’s Readings! similar interests. This can help start friendships because you are already building on common ground. There may even be conventions kids can attend to explore, purchase, and meet others who are interested in the same collector’s items that they are. This will help them build social skills, meet new people, and build new relationships.
CREATE A STORY Collections can also help kids create a story. As they look through the items in their collection they can recall where they found the item at a family trip to the zoo or on a hike with a friend and they can remember, share the experience, and learn to tell a story about how they acquired the item.
LESSONS IN BUDGETING Kids who collect items that need to be purchased will have the opportunity to learn budgeting skills. They will need to research how much the item costs, find a way to earn money, and save until they can purchase the item. This may provide the opportunity to research and compare items and
compromise which item they can afford. If the item can be traded they will need to practice their negotiation skills as they bargain with their friends.

BRINGS JOY While your child’s collection may look like a dust collector to you, it likely brings your child happiness. When I really think about it, I have my own collections that bring me joy. A stack of books by my nightstand, my grandmother’s china, more lipsticks and nail polish than I truly need, and enough kitchen gadgets to fill two kitchens. I don’t need these things but I have collected them over the years and they bring me joy. Your child’s collection brings them a similar happiness and it is important to remember this. A child’s treasured collection may seem like a trash collection to a parent but try to foster their interests and encourage what is important to them. Provide a shelf to display items or a special box to store their items in. Many valuable lessons can be learned from collecting items and it seems to be human nature to want to gather items and start a collection.

habits of
happy moms written by Sarah Lyons
We have all heard that motherhood can feel like a rollercoaster ride. There are highs and lows along the way. While that is a true statement, there are also many days where things feel mundane and repetitive. The ride can feel less like a rollercoaster and more like a slow moving monorail. Whether you feel like your life is a rollercoaster or a monorail, every mom wants to be happy and a positive influence on their children. Is there a secret to being a happy mother? While no one can be happy in every moment, here are some tips to keep smiling and feel contentment during the highs, lows, and mundane days of motherhood.
14 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE December 2023
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF When flight attendants review safety information before a flight, they remind passengers to put on their own mask before assisting others. As moms, we often put others’ needs before our own. The same idea can be applied to motherhood. While moms can’t always put themselves first, it is still important to make sure your basic needs are met. “I’ve made self care a priority.” says mom, Bekah Bayer. “I go to bed early enough that I can wake up before the boys do. This gives me time to drink my coffee and start my day off in a peaceful way.” Get adequate rest, eat regular healthy meals, exercise regularly, and take care of your mental health. Assuring these basic needs are met will help you feel healthier and happier so that you can take care of your loved ones.
SCHEDULE TIME FOR YOU “I like to get up before the kids for quiet time alone with my coffee.” says Liz DeArmond, mom of three. “I also make sure to give myself time for running, reading, or sewing, all my favorite things, at some point during the day. I feel it’s important to model this for my kids.“ Allowing your own hobbies and interests to develop and allowing yourself time for them can boost your mood and help you feel happier overall. “I love having time away scheduled so I have something to look forward to during the hard times.” says parent, Kara Thomas. “My rotations include lunch with friends, pedicures, and book clubs.” Give yourself permission to do the things you enjoy both with and without your children.
ENJOY YOUR KIDS One secret of happy moms is they enjoy their children. “Allow yourself to relax and have fun with your kids.” says mom of three Heather Lewis.
“Include your kids in the things that make you happy.” Choose an activity that brings you joy such as gardening, cooking, reading, sports, or travel and show the kids why you find it fun. “Ask them to help you and then let them do it their way. It will build their confidence and give you a break from feeling like you have to do it all.” Try not to compare yourself or your kids to other families and enjoy your own circumstances.
LET IT GO Try to pinpoint what is bringing your mood down. If it is a messy house, have the family pitch in and help you clean it up. Don’t expect it to be perfect and try to appreciate that everyone is pitching in. If getting them to help is a battle, leave the house for the day and do something fun. The mess may be waiting when you get home but your mood may be lighter and it will seem easier to tackle after you’ve had a break. Try to remember that your relationship with your kids is more important long term. You may find your mood is improved just by taking time to play, laugh, and be silly with your kids. It is an unrealistic expectation to be happy every moment of every day but you can have a general feeling of contentment with your life as a mom. If you are having feelings that seem out of control or hopeless, please seek professional help. Not all sadness can be simply brushed away but for many moms simply slowing down to appreciate how great your children are while also taking time to take care of your own mental and physical health can make all the difference in staying happy and healthy.
o t s y a W k Quic d o o M ur o Boost Y After taking care of your family’s needs, working, and doing household chores moms can feel like their gas tank is running on empty which can drain your energy and your mood. Here are some quick ways to boost your mood.
Sing along - Turn up your favorite song and sing along. Dancing and singing are sure to boost your mood.
Laugh it off - Call a friend that always makes you laugh.
If your child is doing something that is frustrating, try to laugh it off. Turn on a funny TV show or podcast. Laughter is the best medicine.
Take a bath - A relaxing soak in the tub is always a good mood booster and can help tense muscles relax helping you feel physically better as well.
Take a walk - Physical exercise and a break from your
house and chores is a great way to change your mood.
Let it go - Do you have piles of dishes and laundry to do? Is it overwhelming? Let it go. You can’t leave it forever, but you can for now. Find something fun to do instead, just for the day. You might find after a break away, you come back to it with a better attitude.
Take a nap - There is nothing better than a nap to help
you recharge your batteries. If your baby is sleeping, take the time to rest as well. If you have older kids, put in a movie and rest next to them on the couch. You will feel recharged and ready for the rest of the day.
Sarah Lyons is a mom of six kids, including triplets. She enjoys reading and having lunch with friends when she can sneak away from the kids.

RHONA AND BRUCE CARESS GALLERY - AND STILL I WRITE: YOUNG DIARISTS ON WAR AND GENOCIDE
THE UNIFORM OF A BUFFALO SOLDIER
In Nazi Europe, Jewish teenagers wrote in worn notebooks. Far away in America, young people in Japanese internment camps did the same. Decades later, it was children in war-time Sarajevo. More recently, in Iraq and Syria, young writers typed their accounts instead, transmitting messages secretly or posting anonymously on social media. Times change, but the impulse to mark our place in the world endures.
Permanent.

BSNM likes to honor the Space Force/ NASA by calling them the “modern-day Buffalo Soldiers” due to them being on the vanguard of civilization in outer space, they too are charting the unknown just like the Buffalo Soldiers did over a century ago.
Displayed are historically correct Buffalo Soldiers in their military uniform. Whether on the Texas-Mexican border or in the northern plains of Wyoming, without the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers the American west would have been delayed 50 years.

MAX ADRIAN: RIPSTOP Max Adrian: RIPSTOP is a solo exhibition of patchwork textiles and inflatable sculptures by the Ohio-based fiber artist. Adrian’s volumetric, pneumatic work transports viewers into a realm of artifice, desire, and worldbuilding. Drawing from rich legacies of queer fiber art and theory, including the AIDS memorial quilt and José Esteban Muñoz’s foundational text, Cruising Utopia, the exhibition features monumentally scaled works that physically respond to the presence of viewers by filling with air. “The sculptures’ constant state of performing, or becoming, reflects Adrian’s interests in queerness as an inherently utopian and future-oriented mode of being,” says Sarah Darro, Curator and Exhibitions Director at HCCC.

TREE OF LIFE Tree of Life showcases sculptural objects made from the African blackwood tree, also known as mpingo or Dalbergia melanoxylon. Native to Tanzania and the territory surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro, this tree has a naturally dark, nearly black, colored core and other unique properties that make it a preferred choice of material for ornamental turning, carving, and use in woodwind instruments. This exhibition features figural sculptures carved in the Makonde tradition by Tanzania-based artists, Joseph Singombe and Pius Mtembe; ornamental turning by the late Texas-based artist James Harris; and woodwind instruments that explore the different methods artists are using when approaching this material.
