TEXASFRONTIER AT THE BRYAN MUSEUM

Museums are for more than just facts and figures, they are places where our imagination can take flight as we ponder what it was like to live in faraway places or distant times. Upon entering the Frontier Gallery at The Bryan Museum for Texas History located in Galveston, visitors of all ages are immediately swept away into April 21, 1836 by the Diorama of the Battle of San Jacinto. More than 1,200 Mexican and Texian army figures are arranged in an authentic landscape depicting all stages of the famous and final battle of the Texas Revolution, allowing you to imagine yourself in the action fighting alongside figures such as Sam Houston and Juan Seguin.

The recreated battle is viewable from all four sides, and each side holds hidden treasures, including women traveling with the Mexican Army and the Twin Sister cannons on the Texian line. This detailed diorama was custom made for the Bryan Museum. Mexican and Texian army figures were handcrafted by King and Country and includes 40 handcrafted trees and 3,000 marsh plants and weeds. There are even a few cows belonging to Peggy McCormick, on whose land the battle took place. Many of the figures are available for sale in the museum’s gift shop. Visitors can use the strategically placed iPads throughout the exhibit to learn more about the battle and study specific figures like Mexican President Santa Anna de Lopez and Texian

Colonel Sydney Shermam. All major participants for the Texian and Mexican armies are present on the battlefield and described using the museum’s technology.

The diorama continues to be a favorite especially for young visitors. Many families make it a must see stop after visiting the San Jacinto Monument where the battle physically took place in present day La Porte. The diorama is a perfect summer learning tool while taking your family on museum adventures to learn more about Texas history in your own backyard.

Every parent wants their child’s birthday to be special but the cost of throwing a party can really add up, especially if you have multiple children. Is it possible to cut party costs without losing the fun and excitement that parents and kids alike have come to love? One way to cut down on costs is by purchasing birthday supplies that can be reused or repurposed year after year.

Every parent wants their child’s birthday to be special but the cost of throwing a party can really add up, especially if you have multiple children. Is it possible to cut party costs without losing the fun and excitement that parents and kids alike have come to love? One way to cut down on costs is by purchasing birthday supplies that can be reused or repurposed year after year.

The easiest way to start saving on party decor is to stock up on items when they are on sale or clearance. Choose items that are not theme specific and select a variety of colors that are gender neutral. Basic birthday signs, party lanterns, and photo backdrops can be reused again and again. You can even make your own decor out of stronger materials like cardstock or cardboard or hit up the dollar store for streamers and signs that can be used repeatedly. As you collect a stash of items, store it someplace that is organized and easily accessible when the next birthday arrives.

When purchasing items for the special day, it June be wise to spend a little extra money on birthday items that you know can be used many times over several years. Purchase games that can be used every year like bingo, bean bag toss, or yard games such as badmitten. These games are fun for any party and will see a return on your investment quickly. Chalkboards for

birthday signs, cake stands, and punch bowls can also be purchased once and used for many parties.

You can also buy dress up items that can be used for a photo booth year after year such as hats, silly glasses, feather boas, or masks. Kids of any age will have a great time posing in different costumes. Many of these items can be purchased at a dollar store, garage sales, or June be laying around your house. Choose a basic birthday backdrop for your photo booth or use a plain sheet or tablecloth to keep things simple and affordable for your photo backdrop. There are also fun apps that allow you to put in different backdrops if you use a green background. Photos taken in the photo booth can double as thank you cards for your guests.

Money can be saved on tableware in a few different ways. Cloth tablecloths and plastic plates can be washed and used again. They will last for years with a one-time investment. If the thought of extra cleanup doesn’t appeal to you, try buying a giant roll of white butcher paper and unrolling on the table to be used as a tablecloth. Allow kids to color right on the tablecloth during the party. When the party's over, simply roll up the paper and toss it. One roll of paper will last for years and because of its a neutral color it can be used for many holidays and birthdays.

Another way to save on birthday expenses is to replace balloons with party lanterns. These can be purchased for about the same price as balloons but instead of one-time use, they can be used over and over again. By choosing a variety of neutral colors you will save money without losing the festive look.

Once the party's over, theme-specific party decorations can be repurposed in many ways. Cards and invitations can be made into wall art, ornaments, gift tags, or garland. Crepe paper and napkins can be made into confetti or garland. Old ribbons and balloons can be used to make a festive wreath.

The key to saving money by reusing or repurposing party decor is to get creative. Scour the internet or Pinterest for ideas, shop smart by buying generic birthday items on sale, or create your own decor from things you have around the house. Once you have your basic party decor, add small touches to help create a fun birthday theme. Try to find items that can be used more than once. For example, animals from a Noah’s ark party could be reused for a zoo or circus themed party at a later date. A little creativity can make for a fun, affordable, and environmentally conscious birthday party your child will love.

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?

Poised on the cusp of adulthood, high school seniors are in a unique position to shape their future. The decisions they make even at their young age will affect them for years to come, if not their entire lives. As college costs continue to soar, families are revisiting the idea of technical schools as a viable option to secure future success. Following is a look at the benefits of both technical schools and colleges or universities:

Advantages of Technical Schools

One of the attractions of a technical or vocational school is the cost. College costs vary greatly, including the difference between public and private. But according to the Education Data Initiative which collects data about the US education system, the cost of attendance for a four year in-state public university can cost an average of $25,707 per year. A trade school on the other hand could cost as little as $5000 total.

Enrollment

Enrollment can be much easier for a technical school. Colleges and universities often have a weeks or months long application processes and require essays and test scores such as the SAT or ACT. Technical schools require less, and generally a high school diploma is all that is necessary.

Time

While college degrees take either two years or four years to complete, a student can expect to spend less time in a technical school. There is a wide variety of programs but most students can expect to spend six months to two years.

A college degree can be a first step toward a master’s or PhD. While technical school has an intense focus on a single career path, a college degree can offer a wider range of learning opportunities.

Earning Potential

A college or university degree generally offers a higher earning potential, although this is not the case in all career choices.

For some students the answer may be obvious. For a high school senior who has a definite career choice in mind such as electrician, mechanic, or chef, a technical school may be the logical choice. On the other hand if your child thrives in an academic setting, seeks broad knowledge, or wishes to continue his or her education, college or university may fit him or her quite well. Scholarships may be available for both options but in general a college education will cost more before your student can start his or her career.

SCREEN TIME 10 easy ways to cut kids

Tablets, smartphones, television, and video games play a major role in our daily lives. Technology can be a positive thing, but when it dominates our kids’ free time, it’s time to start limiting it. With these easy tips, even reluctant kids may not notice they are cutting down their time spent with technology.

STEP OUTSIDE

The easiest way to cut down on screen time is playing outside. They can ride bikes, use sidewalk chalk, take a walk, play catch, or play in the sprinkler. When kids are preoccupied outside they are less likely to think about TV or video games.

SET LIMITS

Set clear boundaries for your kids when it comes to electronics. Mom of three, Amy Cameron says “Zero screen time is allowed in the morning before school.” Many other parents do not allow any phones or television during meals. It’s also a good idea to set limits on how much screen time is allowed and what time of day. When everyone is on the same page, there is less arguing about putting it down when the daily limit has been reached.

JOIN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Kids who are busy with sports or the arts have less time to play on electronics because their time is spent in practices, games, and performances.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE

When attempting to limit screen time for your kids, take a look at how much time you spend on screens. Good or

bad, our kids learn from our actions and we can set a good example about when it's appropriate to look at our phone and when it’s time to focus on other things.

HOST A PLAYDATE

One way to cut down on time for screens is to host a no-electronics playdate. With friends over, it is easier to find other ways to occupy their time as they socialize and play with their friends.

GET COOKING

Distract your kids from electronics by keeping them busy in the kitchen. They can help cook and bake and have fun sampling the things they have made themselves.

EXPLORE THE CITY

Visit the zoo, Deanna Rose, the pool, or local parks or attractions with your kids. If they are busy exploring our great city, they will not have time for screens.

DO A PROJECT

Come up with a family project for the day to keep the kids screen-free. This could be a big chore like cleaning up the backyard or something fun like an art project or science experiment.

PLAY A GAME

Declare it family game day and choose a few board games to play together. You could also try an outside game like hopscotch, foursquare, kickball, or break into teams and have a water balloon fight.

Instead of dealing with temps in the 100’s…..you could be enjoying highs in the 60s! That’s right! Can you believe that?? Highs in the 60s-70s and lows in the 50s! Sounds heavenly? Well wait until you see the scenery that goes with these magical temps!

Located a couple of hours west of Seattle, Seabrook is an urban oasis seamlessly woven into nature on the Washington Coast with a similar feel to

Seaside, FL. Filled with 275 beautiful, vacation homes of all sizes available for rent on the beachfront, in the town center or in the serene farm district. No matter what your party requires, there is a home for everyone. Guests will find everything from small cabins and cottages that sleep two, to homes suitable for up to 22. They vary in size and style, and include amenities such as private hot tubs, pet friendly

lodging, fire pits, and extended outdoor spaces.

Speaking of outdoor spaces, you cannot beat the views! I was fortunate enough to stay at one of the homes with an ocean view and it did not disappoint. It’s amazing the calm that the sounds and sights of the ocean can bring. I immediately felt relaxed upon arrival.

As soon as I unpacked, I headed ‘downtown’. The walk

took all of about 5 minutes! I wanted to check out the shops and grab a bite to eat. I headed over to Koko’s Restaurant & Tequila Bar for some amazing food. While I am normally disappointed with Mexican food when I travel, this was not the case this trip. The Tamarind Habanero Prawns and the Tortilla Soup went perfectly with my delicious Mojito! I loved this place so much, I ate there twice!

What’s so great about the town is that it has everything you need. Since I was going to be there for a few days, I headed over to the fresh market to pick up a few things, so I didn’t have to eat out every meal. I picked up a few staples, water, fruit, hummus, crackers, cheese, yogurt, wine, nuts and the best Cider I’ve ever tasted. I discovered that this cute little market was going to be moving to its new 13,000 sq ft home later this year! Then they really will have EVERYTHING you need to stock up - great convenience!

And if you are looking for convenience, they have you covered. Seabrook is home to 18 parks, an event space, boutique spa, fitness center, hundreds of acres of mountain bike and hiking trails, central amphitheater, sports and pickle ball courts, indoor pool, award winning restaurants, and plenty of shopping options - it’s an ideal getaway for all ages. Seabrook’s resident concierge can assist guests with everything from in-home grocery and chef services, to specialized outings and experiences. Since I was only there for a few days, I had to plan my time wisely to maximize everything I wanted to take in while I was there.

First on my bucket listWhale Watching

While I am from Florida and have spent a large block of my life in & on the water, I have NEVER seen a whale in the wild. It has been on my list for many years, but my travels have always just missed the migration season! Not this year, though!! I caught the tail end of the season and made arrangements to head out to the open waters and cross my fingers I’d get lucky.

So day 2 of my trip, I jumped in the rental and headed to Westport, about an hour away to Ocean Sportfishing. Captain Eric & crew were patiently awaiting my arrival and we headed out

with the understanding that we may or may not get lucky. While that thought was still rolling around my brain, the Captain shouted he thought he saw something and gunned the engine. Within 10 minutes of leaving the dock, we were watching not one, but two whales swimming right off the front of the boat! They rolled around, played and sprayed for a good 30 minutes and it was AMAZING! Another check on my bucket list!

I headed back to grab a bite and check out more of the shops. Seabrook is home to some of the state’s most celebrated restaurants, as well as an expansive wine bar, a juice and salad bar, and a classic ice cream and candy shop, so I had great options. While I did not eat at the ice cream and candy shop, I did pop in. It reminded me of Dylan’s Candy Shop, just not as big. Everything looked fun

and delicious! By the looks of the customers, it was quite popular!

A curated group of merchants includes Magnolia’s Clothing Boutique, Red Cedar Surf Co., Brooklets Toys, Joie Des Livres book store, The Salty Dog, Seaworthy Home and Tides by Seabrook kept me busy for the afternoon. I scored a yummy pair of suede joggers at Magnolia’s, a cozy Seabrook Sweatshirt from Tides, a watercolor travel set (my new obsession) from the toy store and cards from the bookstore! All in all, a quite lovely afternoon.

The next day, I headed over to Bucks Northwest rentals to get some kayaking in. I was fortunate enough to warrant a one on one tour with the local owner who gave

me a complete history of this beautiful area as we kayaked down the Humps and Tulips River. Although it was a little cooler than I would have liked, the beauty of the river and the foliage was quite breathtaking and well worth enduring the cold!

If Kayaking isn’t your thing, surfing is a year-round sport on the northern Washington Coast. Outdoor enthusiasts will find it doesn’t always need to be warm and sunny to catch great waves. Buck’s NW offers rentals of surf gear, lessons, and guided surfing. Buck’s also offers skimboarding rentals, and guided SUP tours through the Copalis and Humptulips

Rivers and the legendary Ghost Forest. Additional adventures include fishing, hiking, and biking options (mountain,

beach, gravel forestry paths, and in-town) on your own or with a guide. Lots of options for outdoor enthusiasts!

After a few hours on the river, I needed a little relaxing so I headed over to Spa Elizabeth Boutique for a massage. The atmosphere was lovely and my masseuse could not have been better! Just what my sore muscles needed!

To keep the self-love theme for the day, I wanted to check out Lorraine’s Candle Studio –where they offer a “make-yourown-candle” experience. You choose a mixture of scents that speak to you and then a vessel to place them into. Whether

you like woodsy or fruity, floral or foody, there was ample to choose from. I couldn’t make up my mind, so I made two candles! It was so much fun and smelled absolutely divine!

While I was not able to partake in any local events while I was there, events are scheduled throughout the year, ranging from an outdoor summer concert series and oceanfront yoga sessions to wine tastings, wellness classes, expert speakers, spring and fall festivals, and holiday celebrations. In May this year, Seabrook launched its first annual Beachside Author Series, featuring best-selling and award-winning authors monthly through October 2023, which sounds like a blast.

Just under three hours from Seattle and Portland, Seabrook provides the perfect launch pad for day trip excursions to Olympic National Park, Lake Quinault, Ruby Beach, and the Hoh Rain Forest. Fishing enthusiasts will find prime steelhead fishing opportunities on four local rivers, and deep-sea fishing experiences off the coast.

Fresh Foods expanded market, a 13,000 square foot gourmet grocery, will be completed this spring along with a new Fitness Center, 25-yard heated outdoor pool, large hot tub, and sauna in the South Farm District neighborhood. A retrostyle arcade with a focus on all the favorite games of the 80’s is set to open in summer 2023 on Front Street, along with a barber shop, men’s wear boutique, and kitchen and bath retailer in the town center.

If you’d like to make this place your permanent home, you can. While I was walking through town I met someone from West U who made the move a few years ago. When I asked if he was pleased with his decision to migrate to the Northwest, his smile said it all!

Razor clam digging: Winter and Spring in Washington State provides one of the most unique and popular activities you’ll find – razor clam digging! People come from across the state and country for the opportunity to harvestm fresh clams right off the beach. First time clam digging? Buck’s Northwest offers guided digs at Mocrocks and Copalis beach. They also offer all you’ll need to get started on your own or with a guide.

Glass float finding: A little known but favorite PNW winter beach activity is searching for - and finding - Japanese glassfishing floats. The earliest evidence of glass floats being used by fishermen comes from Norway in 1844,and today most of those remaining in the ocean are stuck in a circular pattern of ocean currents in the North Pacific. The high season for finding glass floats on the Washington Coast (based on tides andweather patterns) is December - May.

Mushroom Foraging: Seabrook has partnered with local Pacific Northwest foraging experts to provide mushroom foraging trips every Saturday through the fall harvest. The two-hour experience provides a fun and educational orientation on mushroom foraging complete with hikes through the beautiful forests of Seabrook in search of several varieties of mushrooms including fresh golden-brown chanterelles. These guided sessions will return in the fall of 2023 – timing based on the mushroom season.

YAYOI KUSAMA: AFTERMATH OF OBLITERATION OF ETERNITY

Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, born 1929) was living in New York when she created her first Infinity Room in 1965. Engaging the viewer directly, through reflections that project into an infinite distance, these installations combine aspects of Minimalism’s clean use of industrial materials with ritual and performance. Kusama returned to Japan in 1970, and subsequent works became increasingly personal. She marked her 80th birthday with Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity, which references the annual Buddhist Tōrō nagashi (Water Lantern) ceremony honoring one’s ancestors.

Over 120 specimens representing more than 70 species are on display, including 42 species of birds and 28 species of mammals. Many rare and endangered species are showcased, including Okapi, Lowland Gorilla, Mandrill and Scimitar-horned Oryx.

Additionally, many species rarely seen in museums are on display here, including Gerenuk, Giant Forest Hog, Guenons and other forest primates, and a variety of birds. The natural panoramas containing family groups of Aoudad sheep, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Greater Kudu, Rock Hyrax, Spotted Hyaena, Egyptian Goose and Great Blue Turaco are a special treat for visitors of all ages.

This exhibit explores how American Jews imported traditions, adapted culture and built community through the experience of food. In addition to showing how Jewish deli forged an entirely new, quintessentially American cuisine by combining Central and Eastern European dishes with ingredients abundantly available in the United States, the exhibition traces the larger arc of the Jewish experience in the US during the twentieth century. Neon signs, menus, advertisements, fixtures, historical footage, film and television clips and artifacts illuminate how delicatessens evolved from specialty stores catering to immigrant populations into the beloved national institutions they are today.

Once dubbed “the marvelous mad maven of modern art in America,” Walter Hopps (1932–2005) estimated that he had curated some 250 exhibitions in his 50+ year career. Hopps’s impressive curatorial record constitutes the framework of The Curatorial Imagination of Walter Hopps, which features more than 130 artworks by 70 artists, The show will explore the influential curatorial vision of Hopps, the Menil

Collection’s Founding Director, as well as his distinctive approach to exhibition making and appreciation for a variety of 20th-century art movements. It features drawings, paintings, photography, and sculpture, ranging from the 1930s to the early 2000s.

HYPERREAL: GRAY FOY

Between the 1940s and 1970s, American artist Gray Foy (1922–2012) created a body of extraordinarily meticulous drawings, most often rendered in graphite on paper. This exhibition celebrates two recent gifts that have made the Menil Collection the foremost repository of Foy’s work. Intrigued by Surrealism and Magic Realism as a young artist, Foy characterized his artistic method as “hyper-realism.” His exacting technique— which required intense concentration and even months to complete a single drawing—rewards sustained looking. The exhibition spans the entirety of Foy’s career, from his early Surrealist compositions to his later inventive botanical and geological renderings. Also included are a selection of the artist’s commercial illustrations, which will be displayed publicly for the first time.
