This works for kids of all ages, plus it can be as involved as you want it to be. Come up with fun clues like “As a dad I could not ask for better, your next clue is where you find a letter,” to lead dad around the house to find a Father’s Day prize. You can make up your own clues or download a set from ETSY. You’re sure to get lots of giggles from kids every step of the way.
To make this work with older kids, you can even take the hunt beyond the house to go to places around town. Give him a clue when he arrives at each location, eventually ending up at a favorite restaurant or event like a baseball game or concert.
Even the most macho dads can appreciate a little trip down memory lane, especially for Father’s Day. Break out some old photos and create a short movie full of memories for him. This is the perfect project for tweens and teens to take charge of. For younger helpers, get photos printed and have them create a poster of memories.
It’s even great to get photos from before dad was, well, a dad. Give him the chance to tell stories about who he was as a kid and before he embraced dad life.
Every dad we know has some project they started that they never got around to finishing because dad life is busy. Work together to help him finish a project. Whether it’s finally building the shelves he needs or planting the garden he dreams of, working together will make the project even sweeter.
Challenge: This can be as crazy as you want it to be. Think outdoor races or a bake-off. Junebe a game of basketball or chess. Discover a fun challenge you can do for some friendly competition and time together.
This is not giving him a coupon for help in the yard or washing his car. This is about actually doing it. Surprise dad and wash the car inside and out. Pack his lunch for the next day. Take care of a job he always does so he can put his feet up and relax. Bonus points if you bring him some lemonade and cookies!
Does he love a certain hiking trail or beach? Junebe there’s a bookstore that he never has time to meander through or that hardware store that he loves. Even a coffee shop that makes his favorite latte. Find a place you know he enjoys and get him there.
You can have him go on his own if he likes some quiet time to himself or make it a
family affair if that’s more his speed. No matter how you do it, just make sure it’s one of his favorite places.
It’s easy for parents to get so caught up in the day-to-day that they run out of time for exploring new places. Give dad the gift of exploration.
You can go old school and road trip with no plan in mind, but it’s usually better to have a few ideas up your sleeve. Websites like Only In Your State can help you find everything from wacky restaurants, hikes you never knew about, abandoned places, and even road trip trails to take you on an adventure to the state’s best ice cream spots, breweries, and more.
Even dad has a list of things he’d love to do. Sometimes it gets buried under work and baseball practice and goodnight stories. Father’s Day is the perfect time to dust it off!
Get a poster and some markers or create a shared family list on your phone for Dad’s Summer Bucket List. Ask him what he wants to do before summer is over. And it can’t be all work and house things. Make sure he has fun little outings like going to his favorite ice cream shop and some bigger ideas like boogie boarding at the state beach. Even reading through a favorite book or seeing a movie counts!
The only requirement: make time for the things on the list. Putting them on the calendar is the key to making them happen.
From sunup to sundown, fill the day with dad’s favorite foods. Does he love a Caffè Americano and donuts?
Junebe a protein shake from that place across town? How about burgers and fries? Add a milkshake? You got it!
Whatever it is, the day isn’t about what the kids like (sorry kids!) It’s a chance for dad to eat the things he loves and enjoy every bite. He doesn’t even have to share!
The fun doesn’t have to last for just one day. Make it an overnight or a weekend. Plan a family vacation that you know he’d love. It doesn’t need to be far or expensive (although that resort he’s dreamed about isn’t a terrible idea!) Think about things he loves and start there.
Does he love the outdoors?
Junebe a campout is a perfect idea (even in the backyard!) Is he a museum guy? Plan an overnight to go to an art installation or even a fun place like the Spy Museum. Whatever dad likes you can find a place he will enjoy.
And the best part? The time you’ll have together!
Every dad needs reminders of how much he is loved and valued. While you don’t want to forgo the handmade cards and the offbeat kid ideas, these 10 ways to celebrate dad are sure to remind him of how much you care and give everyone some fun along the way.
Visit the Galápagos Islands right here in Houston! The Houston Zoo opened its newest exhibit, Galápagos Islands, on April 7, just in time to close out the Zoo’s 100th anniversary. Explore this first-of-its-kind exhibit and become immersed in the unique landscapes and ocean habitats of the famous island chain. See giant tortoises, sea lions, sharks, penguins, and more as you make the journey through the exhibit.
The Galápagos Islands are located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. The islands are home to unique and wonderful creatures, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth and are some of the world’s most endangered species. The islands are on the equator and are surrounded by different ocean currents—some warm, some cold. It’s this mix of currents that makes the islands’ variety of species so unique. Most of the animals in the Galápagos Islands exhibit at Houston Zoo are closely related species and serve as ambassadors for their Galápagos cousins
When you enter Houston Zoo, you immediately see the rocky cliffs of the Sea Lion Coast area. You can watch California sea lions sun themselves as waves crash on the rocks. The cliffs surrounding the sea cave were created to look as if they were formed by lava—just like the Galápagos Islands. This Sea Lion Coast is one of several viewing areas to see sea lions.
As you enter the exhibit you can see a meadow, where giant Galápagos tortoises lumber about, grazing on grasses, or wallowing in muddy puddles. You can get upclose to these gentle giants by booking a Galápagos tortoise encounter. During the experience, you’ll have special access at the tortoise exhibit, learning all about these special animals while feeding them their favorite treats. After viewing the tortoise habitat from the outdoor trail, move inside for another view of the tortoise herd and to see blue iguanas sunning themselves on the ledges of their rocky habitat. Blue iguanas in the Caribbean and the four species of iguanas found in the Galápagos share similar evolutionary origins
After the tortoises and blue iguanas, you’ll enter a sea cave designed to look like the caves in the Galápagos that are created by waves. From here you get another view of the sea lions as they swim through their new home. Colorful Sally lightfoot crabs are visible in a nearby opening in the rocks and scurry about in the splashing waves. See how many you can spot hiding in the cracks of the lava rock. Emerge from the path into a 40-foot-long acrylic tunnel fully submerged under the water, surrounded by sea lions swimming on both sides and overhead. The playful sea lions seem to dance around the tunnel and even sit on top overhead!
After you leave the sea lion tunnel, walk right up to a 40-foot floor to ceiling aquarium that looks as if it extends deep into the open ocean. The One Ocean Aquarium is home to many marine animals, including blacktip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, fish, cownose rays, and many more. It’s here where you can also see fan-favorite, Bobbi the sea turtle! After being rescued Bobbi was determined to be non-releasable and now makes the Zoo her home.
The Houston Zoo has been saving sea turtles in the wild through rescue, rehabilitation, and release for over 30 years, but this is the first time that sea turtles are highlighted in a large multi-species habitat at the Zoo.
As you leave the One Ocean Aquarium, you’ll see an opening in the lava tunnel wall containing an aquarium featuring giant sea horses, colorful sea stars and sea cucumbers. Look carefully and you can see creatures hiding in the branches. Coming up from the lava tunnel, playful Humboldt penguins come into view, waddling along the rocks, and swimming through the water—these penguins are the first ever for Houston Zoo. Galápagos penguins are the most endangered penguin species, this is why the Zoo is home to Humboldt penguins to represent their endangered relatives. Humboldt penguins are from the coastal areas of Chile and Peru where temperatures can reach 100°F and are an ideal fit for Houston’s climate, although their exhibit at the Zoo is climate controlled.
By visiting the new Galápagos Islands at the Houston Zoo, you are helping save marine animals in the wild! Houston Zoo partners with Galápagos and Texas conservation programs to protect the wild counterparts of the species in the Galápagos exhibit.
The Zoo has provided training and support for ECOS Foundation, a program that empowers Galapagueño teenagers to be the next generation of Galápagos conservation leaders. They also support the Giant Tortoise Movement Ecology Program and marine conservation programs in Argentina, protecting sea

Summer camp at The Bryan Museum is the perfect blend of history, literacy, art, and drama. The camp takes place the week of June 19-23, and during that time, campers from ages 8-12 will experience the best the Museum has to offer. Whether a camper comes for the morning session or the afternoon session, he or she will enjoy every minute and learn about Texas history along the way.
Each day of Texas Story Summer Camp at The Bryan is dedicated to learning about different ways stories are told and all about the lives of different Texas storytellers. For example, on one day of camp, campers will learn about some of the stories of Texas that have been told on paper. Campers will get to examine a copy of Cabeza de Vaca’s book, Relación, about his seven years lost in Texas in the 1530s. They will also get to explore the special exhibition gallery based on the book Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School Football in Texas. On another day of camp, campers will learn about German-Texas sculpture Elisabet Ney, and the way stories are told through historical artifacts such as pottery or saddles.
To complement each day’s history lesson, campers will create art projects with clay, on canvas, and even with unconventional mediums such as a paper fan. The inspiration for the fan art is the beautifully decorated fan on display at the Museum recounting the failed La Salle expedition into Texas in 1685. Campers will also get to try their hand at creating chalk pastel sunset drawings in the style of the “Dean of Texas Artists,” Frank Reaugh, whose art is on display in the Texas Masters gallery.
To fulfill the Museum’s mission of giving students the “chance to experience the stories of yesterday and write the stories of tomorrow” each camper will have the opportunity to write a letter to or a story about their favorite Texas hero. These letters and stories will be entered in the I Am Texas writing and art contest where students can win cash prizes and get published in the Historian’s Journal and become part of the Museum library’s permanent collection.
The last part of each camp day will be dedicated to fun in the most dramatic way possible! Campers will learn warm-up exercises, play theatre games and write their own scripts based Texas history. As the week progresses, the professional drama educator will help campers make props and stage their stories. On Friday, family and friends are invited to a camper showcase where the campers themselves will bring history to life.
Whether you live nearby, have a beach house on the Island, or are looking for a June Galveston get-away with the family, Texas Story Summer Camp at The Bryan is a perfect fit for kids looking to learn about history while having fun. And best of all, the half-day camp still leaves plenty of time to fit in a trip to the beach!

Great Gift for
Schools out for summer! It’s summer vacation and the kids are free of the early morning rush, after school homework, and have the freedom to enjoy warm weather and time with family and friends. Many parents find that with this freedom comes the battle to keep their kids off electronics. Here are some screen-free activities every kid should do this summer.
Some kids June enjoy playing outside without having to be pushed out the door but others June need a little encouragement. Instead of simply telling your child to “Go play outside.” Try having them design and build a kite, then go outside to fly it. You could also do a “Park Tour” by making a list of great parks in your area (ask friends for recommendations) and visit a different park each week. Have a picnic, explore the neighborhood, set up an obstacle course, play with sidewalk chalk, toss a ball, play on the swing set, pick flowers, or take a family bike ride. The possibilities are endless and can be catered to your child’s interests.
No school means no early mornings. While staying up late every night June not be the best option for young children, allowing a few late nights on lazy summer evenings can be a great way to make memories. Use a projector to watch a movie outdoors, catch fireflies in the backyard, or watch a firework show. There’s something special about a warm summer evening and getting to stay up late. If you are lucky, the kids might even sleep in the next day.
It wouldn’t be summer without some swimming. Take the kids to the lake, pool, splash pad, or set up the sprinkler in the backyard. Nothing feels better than cooling off in the water on a hot summer day.
A great way to get kids outside is to have them work in the garden. This allows for plenty of outdoor time and can sometimes include daily maintenance for watering, weeding, and checking on the plants. “Grow something!” says Heather Allen of Olathe. “Anything, be it a tree, vegetable, or flower, there is something really rewarding about getting your hands in the dirt and growing and taking care of a plant.” If you choose to have a vegetable garden, get the kids involved in cooking with ingredients they have helped to grow.
Camping is a great summer activity to get families outside together. Some families June enjoy taking the tent to a nearby campground and unplugging for a day or two. Other families June prefer camping in the backyard so they are close to the comforts of home. Either way, put
away the electronics for the day, roast marshmallows on a campfire, and enjoy the time together outdoors.
Family projects are a great way to keep kids busy. Decide as a group what projects you would like to focus on this summer. Some ideas could include cleaning and remodeling (or rearranging) their bedrooms, collecting food for a food pantry, planting a garden, scrapbooking, reading an entire book series, or running a 5K.
“I tell the kids, the school year is for learning what your teacher wants you to learn and summer is for learning what you want to learn.” says Amy Cameron, mom of three. She suggests making a list of 2-3 topics of interest and plan to pursue them by reading books, attending camps, or doing research. Moms Erin Lorton and Stephanie Loux both suggest keeping a daily journal. “They write a few sentences about their day. It’s always fun to look back on previous years.” says Lorton. “We keep daily math, reading, and summer writing journals.” says Loux. You can print
pictures and create a keepsake for them to look back on.
` Ice cream should be on every kid’s summer bucket list. There are countless ice cream and snow cone shops to visit in the metro area. Create a list of new shops or old favorites you would like to visit this summer. You could also try making ice cream or popsicles at home.
It’s great to be outside in the summer but sometimes it’s too hot or rainy and you need to find an indoor place to burn off energy. Consider getting the kids moving by visiting an indoor trampoline place, a skating rink, rock climbing facility, or indoor aquatic center. If you want to save money and need some indoor ideas, have a dance party in the house, find Go Noodle or Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube, or have a push-up and sit-up challenge. It’s unrealistic that kids will stay off of their electronics the entire summer, but with these tips you can increase their outdoor and exercise time. They June have so much fun they forget about their tablets. A parent can dream, right?

Check weather conditions before you go and avoid tubing during rainy or stormy weather. Keep an eye out for any potential
hazards like rapids or shallow areas. Lastly, ensure that you respect local laws and regulations regarding alcohol consumption while tubing. With these essential tips in mind, you can have a fun and safe time on the river!
Selecting the right tube is essential for having an enjoyable tubing experience in Texas. When choosing a tube, consider factors such as size, weight capacity, and comfort. Inflatable tubes are the most popular option and come in various sizes and shapes, but hard plastic tubes are also available. It's important to ensure that the chosen tube has a cup holder or storage compartment for your drinks and snacks, and always check for any damages or punctures before getting into the water. By selecting the right tube, you can stay comfortable while enjoying your time on the river.
Protect your feet and enhance your tubing experience by

Investing in good water shoes is essential to make sure you're prepared and comfortable during your tubing adventure.
The Texas summer sun can be brutal, and it's essential to protect yourself while tubing. Sunscreen with a high SPF is a must-have item on your tubing checklist. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Don't forget to reapply every few hours, especially after getting wet. Long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses are also great ways to shield yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Investing in goodquality sun protection will help keep you safe and comfortable while enjoying your tubing adventure in Texas.
Tubing in Texas is an exhilarating experience, but it can also be exhausting. To ensure you have the energy to make it through the day, be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. Staying hydrated and fueled up will help keep you going, especially during the hotter parts of the day. A cooler packed with ice-cold drinks and a variety of snacks like trail mix or fruit will do the trick. The key is to choose foods that are easy to eat while on the river and won't spoil in the heat. So, pack smart and enjoy your tubing adventure without any hindrance!
When tubing in Texas, it’s crucial to follow the alcohol rules and avoid bringing glass or Styrofoam containers on the river. Not only do these items pose a safety hazard, but they can also harm the environment and other tubers. Many rivers have strict regulations
on alcohol consumption, including limits on the amount of alcohol that can be brought per person. By adhering to these rules and respecting the natural surroundings, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable tubing experience for everyone.
When planning a tubing trip in Texas, one question you June have is whether to rent or bring your own tube. Renting a tube from a rental company can be a convenient option as they will provide transportation, tubes, and other necessary equipment. They often offer additional amenities like shuttle services, changing rooms, and food options. However, bringing your own tube June be more cost-effective if you plan on tubing frequently or with a large group. Make sure your tube is appropriate for
the water conditions and that you have all necessary safety equipment if you do decide to bring your own.
When it comes to tubing in Texas, timing is everything. The best time to go tubing is during the summer months, typically from late June to early September. During this time of year, the weather is warm, and the water is inviting. However, keep in mind that weekends can be crowded, resulting in long wait times and less time on the river. Consider scheduling your tubing trip on a weekday to avoid the crowds and get more time on the water. Before you head out, check the weather forecast and any river closures or restrictions due to high water levels or other safety concerns.
When it comes to tubing in Texas, safety should always be your top priority. The thrill of the adventure can sometimes overshadow the potential hazards of the activity. That's why following some fundamental safety tips can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Always wear a properly fitting life jacket, avoid consuming alcohol while tubing, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, check weather conditions beforehand, and be aware of your surroundings to avoid any unexpected obstacles. Remember, a little precaution can go a long way in keeping you safe while enjoying the beautiful rivers in Texas.
It doesn't have to. If you own your own tube and you
can access one of the rivers, then jump on in and enjoy. Nothing beats floating in the cold waters on a hot and sunny summer day with only the current to set the pace. It truly embodies the 'lazy days of summer'.
Tubing is a popular activity in Texas, and with so many rivers to choose from, it's hard to pick just one.

Eighteen-year-old Black high school student Marques has narrowly survived being shot by a white man while sitting in a car with a friend, who was killed. As the play begins, Marques recuperates at home, listening to a sports-talk radio program hosted by his uncle, Randall, who announces an upcoming local march for safety from gun violence. The family’s reluctance to attend seems to stem from other, unclear concerns, but it’s that fear, in its many forms, that is a thread throughout this work. Do we need guns to keep ourselves safe?

This exhibit explores how American Jews imported traditions, adapted culture and built community through the experience of food. In addition to showing how Jewish deli forged an entirely new, quintessentially American cuisine by combining Central and Eastern European dishes with ingredients abundantly available in the United States, the exhibition traces the larger arc of the Jewish experience in the US during the
twentieth century. Neon signs, menus, advertisements, fixtures, historical footage, film and television clips and artifacts illuminate how delicatessens evolved from specialty stores catering to immigrant populations into the beloved national institutions they are today.

American artist Gray Foy (1922–2012) created a body of extraordinarily meticulous drawings, most often rendered in graphite on paper. This exhibition celebrates two recent gifts that have made the Menil Collection the foremost repository of Foy’s work. Intrigued by Surrealism and Magic Realism as a young artist, Foy characterized his artistic method as “hyper-realism.” The exhibition spans the entirety of Foy’s career, from his early Surrealist compositions to his later inventive botanical and geological renderings. Also included are a selection of the artist’s commercial illustrations, which will be displayed publicly for the first time.

This exhibit celebrates the enduring artistic traditions from Cameroon and its global diaspora. Highlights include headdresses, masks, prestige hats, royal stools and figural sculptures, and palace architectural elements from several of the Grassfields kingdoms.
The accompanying space features two recent artworks by Douala-based artist Hervé Youmbi (b. 1973), whose work engages with the region’s rich artistic heritage, the legacies of colonialism, and the international circulation of historical African art. Contemporary counterpoints to the display of historical works, Youmbi’s projects underscore the vibrant living cultural heritage of the Grassfields and its ongoing transformation at the hands of contemporary artists.

An exhibition of ceramics and printmaking named for the mythical, flower-filled paradise, known in Nahuatl as xochitlalpan. Influenced by her upbringing in Guanajuato, Mexico, and Texas, Martinez’s vibrant work centers a reclamation of indigenous identity through craft production, using materials and motifs with ties to prehispanic cultures. Her vividly glazed terracotta vessels and large-scale prints are inscribed with motifs like the flower, a deeply significant symbol in the poetic tradition of Nahuatl speakers, known as In xochitl In cuicatl (Flower and Song).
