Doppler is extra special because she is the first pet I have EVER owned. I didn't have pets as a kid... So I have probably spoiled her wayyyyy too much to make up for lost time. Tell us about your cute boy: Louie is our 9 year old Golden Retriever. He was just 6 weeks old when my husband and I rescued him from a Bob Evans Restaurant parking lot in Columbus Ohio. Tell us why you are an animal enthusiast and what they add to your life: As far back as I can remember, I’ve wanted to save ALL the animals. Every single one of them. I literally grew up in a cornfield where animals passed through constantly and I would attempt a rescue daily. Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, chickens - you name it. Anytime I see a dog/cat (or even a turtle once) wondering on the side of the road...I pick them up and nurse them back to health. I keep them until I find them a home or find a spot in a local no-kill shelter.

Where does Riley sleep and what toys does he like? He sleeps in bed with me, or on the floor nearby. He loves his Big Rubber Bone - it’s the only toy he hasn’t eaten or destroyed so bad that it had to be thrown away. Here is a funny tidbit: Riley will only go to the bathroom in my back yard. We’ve tried so many times while we’re out, but as soon as we get home he races to the back door. What does your station do to support local pet causes? PET BIRD Feeding: ARE YOUR BIRD'S NUTRITIONAL NEEDS BEING MET?

As a veterinarian and a pet bird owner for over 20 years, I know that diet is one of the main pillars of every animal's well being, including humans. Tail End GOT YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW? LEAVE LIVE ANIMALS OUT OF EASTER
Some think it’s okay to release these animals into the wild. This means certain death. They cannot fend for themselves and will die of starvation, exposure to the elements or will be preyed upon by other animals. Don’t think that you can simply take the animal to a shelter either. Most animal welfare organizations are not equipped to handle animals given as Easter gifts. Click on the Education Center tab on the home page of our website to schedule a tour. Find out what we do and what’s involved in caring for injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife. It’s a world most people know very little about. HORSE THERAPY FOR PEOPLE
T
he sight of trucks and trailers rolling into SIRE Therapeutic Horsemanship’s Hockley site
is nothing new, so the nine resident therapy horses continued to graze calmly. In contrast, SIRE clients and staff were anxious to see the trailers’ contents: two draft horses, Tommy and Jake, their large wheelchair-accessible wagon, the Dartmoor ponies Flirt and Bella, and their lighter buggy. The driving lessons, horses and buggies came courtesy of Michael Muir, owner of Access Adventure in California, and Linda Yutzy of Brenham. This was just one stop for “The Caravan,” a 2,500 mile

PROTECTING AFRICAN ELEPHANTS As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we will bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or other local organizers such as the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we are highlighting the plight of African Elephants. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

organization forged by local community members and scientists from around the globe. Save the Elephants works to sustain elephant populations by doing extensive research, conservation action and education programs while inspiring local communities to value nature. When I first started working with Save the Elephants I collected data by monitoring the herds of elephants in Samburu National Reserve. We collar the elephants to track their movements in order to protect them by marking the
corridors they use. In my years with
