the cover
As a real estate agent who is deeply passionate about animal welfare, I believe that this is a perfect time to give back to our furry friends in need. Year over year, I continue to support local pet adoption initiatives by partnering with nearby shelters to promote their adoption during the holiday season. encourage my clients and community members to consider adding a new member to their family during this festive time. Adopting a pet not only provides a loving home for an animal in need but also brings immeasurable joy and companionship to families. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals and create a more compassionate community, ensuring that every pet has the chance to experience the warmth and love of a home this holiday season.

MAJOR RING IN THE HOLIDAYS!
Celebrating our 18th Annual Notable Houstonians Issue, Houston Astros Pitcher Ryan Pressly and his sidekick, "Major" were gracious enough to help us ring in the holidays as our cover models. Our tradition of presenting a crosssection of notable Houston citizens is always a favorite and this year, we don't disappoint! We have Ryan sharing thoughts on "family" while others write about values meaningful to them in our feature story. A big thank you to The Driscoll at River Oaks for use of their beautiful space for the photoshoots. Check it all out in our feature on pages 28-37.
Tis’ the season…and I love it! The sense of celebration, the gathering with friends, co-workers and family, the feeling that a new year is around the corner, and for me, the spirituality of Christmas is deeply meaningful. This year in particular has represented significant differences among our citizens that culminated in an election of leaders for our immediate future. It is my hope that the year ahead can show the best of our republic as we come together for prosperity for all. Personally, my agenda never changes…let’s cherish every being that God created, be responsible stewards over the animals of this earth and treat them with the respect they deserve. Let’s try to change the mind of every trophy hunter, every leader of an animal fighting ring, every person that minimizes the dignity of any sentient being. Amen. Ok…enough of my soapbox LOL! Let’s have a joyous 2025!
And speaking of 2025, it’s a HUGE year for PetTalk - we will be turning 25 in 2025! What a fabulous milestone and I’m so thankful to all of our readers and sponsors that have made PetTalk possible. As a free publication, PetTalk would not exist without our sponsors. Your support of them, by purchasing their goods and services, is the only way we can continue to bring information to our community and champion animal welfare causes, so please continue your patronage of our advertising base.
I’m getting a little ahead of myselflet’s talk about the final issue of 2024, our Annual Notable Houstonians feature story. Since 2006, PetTalk has featured a cross-section of Notable Houstonians who share a few words of wisdom during the holidays. Hands down a fave of mine, feel so fortunate to have an opportunity to meet
a variety of notables and their pets and get to know them a little better. From our cover, Ryan Pressly of the Houston Astros, to a chef, musician, TV anchor and more, meet our line-up for 2024 inside. A little different this year, I have a new “buddy” that has joined me at PetTalk and we are photographed together. still hogged the space for writing (of course) but I wanted to share the page. Look inside to find out who it is!
This issue also features our holiday shopping guide and a preview of the Blaze Dog Feeder, as well as articles on puppy socialization, expectations in the ER, and enriching our senior dog's lives. Plus, don’t miss the news section where you’ll find several fun events to enjoy this Yuletide season including The Muttcracker, Photos with Santa and more.
There is much more valuable information in this issue so take time to sit and enjoy the publication. You can also join our newsletter which we have been diligently working to improve for 2025. The newsletter comes out twice a month, so we don't flood your inbox to the point of aggravation! The newsletter will be the inception point for announcing a number of contests and giveaways, so don't miss out! We also promote opportunities for our readers to participate in the publication on Instagram and Facebook, so be sure to follow us. You can sign up via a QR code on page 47. We would love for you to join our pack!
As we close 2024, want to wish you all a prosperous, happy, safe, and fulfilled 2025 and thank you for your continued loyalty!

The Melodies of Gratitude Concert by Wild Tunes
More than 100 animal lovers and musicians came together for the second annual Melodies of Gratitude concert, raising over $32,000 and awareness for BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, Houston Humane Society, and Special Pals. The funds raised will support over 15,000 home-
less animals in the Houston area.

A very big thank you to TheDriscollAtRiverOaks.com for helping make this Notable Houstonians issue extra special!
Welcome to our annual WORDS OF WISDOM from Notable Houstonians. This annual tradition began in 2006 and through the years we have been delighted to share food for thought on VALUES that are meaningful from some of Houston's finest. We are honored to have a diverse and worthy group writing about such meaningful values as Family, Purposeful Living, Knowledge, Humility, Kindness, Ambition, Commitment, and Friendship. I hope you enjoy reading these heartfelt essays as much as we enjoyed selecting, meeting and working with these individuals that make Houston proud.
May your holidays be filled with love, laughter, joy and peace. And as always, if you have a place in your home for one more furry soul, consider making the season of giving the "gift of life".

There are so many things that come to mind when thinking about my values. Hard work, integrity, respect and dependability are all things that mean a lot to me.
Now that I’m a Dad, I think about those things and I can’t help but be reminded of how much I hope to be a good role model and pass those same values to my son, Wyatt, and daughter, Hunter. know that every move I make is being watched and that my wife and I are in the process of shaping two little humans. And while
family has always been at the top of my values, I can confidently say that it has moved to the number one spot.
The baseball season is long, and before our kids were born, have always tried to spend every chance that get when I’m not at the field with my wife and our dogs, Major and Wrigley. They’ve been there for me through so many ups and downs and wouldn’t be where am today without their support.
My hope is that my wife and have built a foundation strong enough to be a solid, unshakeable foundation for our children.
With all of the distractions around us, it’s more important than ever that we take the time to turn off the screens and sit down for meals together, check in with them, and make the time to connect.
As the holidays and new year are approaching, I am looking forward to spending time with family and friends. It is my opportunity to give back to the family and friends that continue to support me throughout each baseball season.

Lisa Hernandez, KPRC 2 News Anchor / Reporter with "Rocky"
When I first moved to Houston for a job opportunity in 2011 with my two rescue dogs, I lived in a bubble. rarely saw a stray animal in our area along Allen Parkway, never realizing there was a problem in other parts of town. My ignorance blew up in my face when was assigned “Pet of the Week” segments for my news station. I learned just how packed shelters were, that this was the norm and that neighborhoods were overflowing with strays dying horrible deaths on the street. It was hard to look at, but I'm grateful for the awareness. It continues to motivate me to report on animal welfare.
I'm writing about knowledge for this essay opportunity because I feel we need a giant dose of it when it comes to Houston's stray animal crisis. If it's not impacting your neighborhood, you may not know it exists. And if you do, it may feel right to criticize our shelters for not being able to secure a home for every animal that ends up there. But shelters cannot do this alone. In the absence of responsible pet ownership and community involvement, the animals pay the price. When no one steps up to foster, volunteer or advocate for better policies from elected officials, we limit how much our shelters can accomplish. The problem is multi-tiered and isn't getting better. I encourage everyone to reach out to city and county leaders, your local shelter and/or private rescues to learn more and ask how you can help.
Purposeful Living
No wind is favorable to a sailor without a rudder. No life is favorable to a person without purpose.
Setting up my day with Purposeful Living by defining my intentions, what I am grateful for, how I want to interact and what I want to create for the day will help remove the distractions of the day and keeps me focused. Purposeful Living is about aligning my actions, goals, and values with a deeper sense of meaning. It’s the conscious choice to live each day intentionally, focusing on what truly matters rather than
drifting through the day without direction. Each day is a brand new, never before used, baby day.
What can I bring to the day? want to be purposeful when I listen, be purposefully present with my wife Karen, my friends, family and contacts, purposeful with my words, and actions with people.
Molly and I go for a mile walk and play catch. When I throw the ball, she is purposeful in her mission to get that ball and bring it back. Then she will chew on the ball for a minute or
two and release it to me when she is done. Her focus on that ball helps me dial in on what is important for me. My intentions, what am I grateful for, the purpose of the day, and what do want to create.
Today is your brand new never before used, seen or experienced day. It is yours to design, so design it with care. Give it purpose, give it reason, give it life. Because this day will not be back tomorrow.
Knowledge
By my side in this photo is my sweet boy, Rocky, one of our five rescue dogs. He's a distemper survivor with a heart of gold. Thank you, Waiting Under the Willow Foundation Rescue, for saving him and so many more.
Kindness
In a world that is so fast paced and diverse, I feel that the core value of kindness is often dismissed or completely forgotten. We come across so many different people in our everyday lives that sometimes we can become passively numb to our interactions. Everyone has, or can have, a bad day and it takes minimal effort for us to show empathy and kindness. Sometimes, holding the door open for someone or even making eye

contact and wishing a person to have a good day can change their day from bad to good. I firmly believe that our society can only grow if we are to be kind to each other. More importantly, I so strongly believe that we must remember to be kind to ourselves. We are our own worst critic and in order to grow as a friend, coworker, sibling, spouse, human being, we need to remind ourselves that we are just that, only a human
being, and we can make mistakes. Reflect on the situation, learn from our mistakes, and accept the fact that we are constantly growing. One of my favorite quotes from a cookbook is “a person’s errors are his/her portals of discovery." This is a constant lesson I remind myself every day to balance pushing myself to be a better person, but also showing myself kindness.

Humility
Iam blessed to be surrounded daily by individuals excelling in the field of veterinary medicine and animal welfare. Together, we save the lives of thousands of animals each year. Yet, even in this incredible work, I often encounter people struggling with imposter syndrome, believing they don’t deserve their success. Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s perfectly acceptable to be the best—to embrace our intelligence, gifts, and talents with pride. There must also be a balance between recognizing our accomplish-
ments and remaining humble.
Humility is not about feeling like an imposter or engaging in self-deprecation. It doesn’t mean rejecting compliments or thinking poorly of ourselves. Instead, humility is the recognition that no matter our current successes, we can find opportunities for growth in everyone we meet. For me, humility means acknowledging that there is room in this world for all of us to shine without feeling threatened by the talents of others. It is the understanding that being the best at something may reflect our skills and
achievements, but it doesn’t define our worth or value compared to someone else. We can practice humility by celebrating the successes of those around us and helping others achieve their goals. Humility is being grateful, not only for our achievements, but for those who supported us along the way. My favorite moments this holiday season are when am sitting quietly with my dog Cloudy at my feet, giving thanks for all we have received.

Ambition Commitment
For me, ambition is an act of selflove—a way of channeling energy into the things that genuinely matter.
My wife and I have called Houston’s East End home for the past ten years, and while we’ve witnessed incredible growth in this community, the homeless pet issue remains a pressing challenge. Over the years, we’ve helped countless animals find loving homes and have welcomed two dogs, Albert and Bliff, and a cat, Sid into our own home. But the need is still so great, and we’re motivated to keep pushing for positive change.
To me, ambition isn’t about outshining anyone; it’s about tapping into what truly matters, whether that’s art, business, or giving back to our community. Ambition helps me understand what value most and gives me a deeper understanding of myself along the way. It’s a journey that becomes clearer the more I devote myself to my work and passions. I may not be the most competitive person, but I do have an inner drive to grow and make a difference—not to be “the best,” but to reach my potential and learn more about myself and my values in the process.
The world would be a much kinder place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.
For me, this commitment to my canine companions has profoundly shaped my life in more ways never thought possible.
As a child was reminded anytime I asked for a puppy that having a pet is a long-term commitment that requires a lot of time, attention and responsibility. However, no one ever informed me of the amazing qualities having a dog would bring into my life.
Kane was 10 weeks old when we brought him home. He was perfect with his vivid blue eyes and silver fur soft as velvet. A few years later we had the opportunity to rescue sixmonth-old Ruger from a family member. They were already familiar with one another so it wasn’t long before they became “partners in crime”. Their antics, like counter-surfing, stealing things out of guests’ suitcases, and stealing socks right out from under our noses were just for the chase, but other antics landed us in the emergency vet on multiple occasions.
These types of shenanigans are what solidified my role as a committed helicopter dog mom. As high energy as they are, they calm me in ways I never imagined. Raising two crazy Weimaraners not only brings us much joy, laughter and happiness, but lots of worry and heartache. They have taught me a completely different level of commitment, patience, unconditional love and the importance of balancing work and play.

TONIA WHILDEN MICHELLE MANTOR
Co-Publisher & Digital Media Director
What an exciting year 2024 has been for Houston PetTalk! After a couple of decades of publishing PetTalk on my own, have a new “buddy” by my side working hard to continue the growth and success of the publication, my friend, Tonia Whilden. I thought it would be apropos for us to be photographed together in the long-standing tradition of the Notables issue. As thought about my essay and what I wanted to convey, settled on one of the most important elements of happiness…friendship.
As Tonia and I traverse the responsibilities and opportunities that are part of producing a monthly publication, digital content, event sponsorship and more, it is fundamentally essential that we have shared values, trust, mutual respect, and the everso-important soul-nourisher, laughter…the basic tenets of friendship!
Can you imagine your life without friends?
I’m not referring to relationships that might be characterized as “friends” even though they are not enduring; meaning with just a small change, the communication ends. Those relationships certainly serve a purpose in our lives as a secondary support system, but I am referring to those friendships that have substance, strength and longevity. am blessed to have many of these lasting friendships and the cool part is that I keep making more. Life never runs out of people for us to give our love to! The secret to building strong friendships is to be a reliable friend yourself. That means helping a friend in need even if it’s not convenient, listening for hours to their woes, being honest when they ask for advice, being respectful of commitments you make to them, and the most important one in my opinion - don’t forget to be silly and have some fun together! Laughter, before or after the tears, is an essential element of the friendship bond.
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out who is a true friend and who is not. One way to know is the test of time and the other is sacrifice. In prosperity
Friendship
our friends know us; in adversity we know our friends.
Animals are often our friends as well. Some animals are meant to be wild and be protected while others are pets that we get the awesome chance to have a relationship with. Of all the different types of friends in my life, there is one I never have to question what their commitment is to me - my furry friends. Our interactions and the dynamics are quite different than human friendships, but our pets are such giving souls!
Can you name a time when your pet wasn’t happy to see you? They need our care in order to survive and they realize we are their strongest ally in life. For being their caretaker, we are given devotion and can’t think of anything would rather have.
Just as the tenants of friendship apply to humans, the same can be said for animals. Trust and respect, along with a sense of fun and play, provides the foundation of a human-animal bond. Just last night, went to the barn to give the llamas and horses their snack and “nightly tuck-in”. As approached the paddock, the horses were at the gate waiting for me. I went in and just stood between them, looking up at the many stars I am lucky to see living outside the city. I felt a profound sense of gratefulness for so many things in my life. I truly believe they sensed my feeling of happiness and gratitude and they both inched closer to me. I put one hand on each mane, and we all three took in the moment. Without a word spoken, one more tiny step was taken in our relationship journey.
Animals never cease to amaze me at how evolved they truly are and you can tap into that wisdom if you give them your time, patience, love and respect. am so thankful for my animal friends!
Circling back to my human friendship, in addition to the trust we have with one another, Tonia and have the shared value of animal welfare and a deep connection to animals. We both have a profound respect for all species and take stewardship of animals on our planet as an honor bestowed upon mankind…which means treating all sentient beings with dignity. From the adorable guinea pig I’m snuggling and the cute kitten Tonia is holding, to a toad, walrus, peacock, cow, iguana and beyond, we understand that ALL animals are important and we make it our mission to spread the word of animal welfare as much as we can. The message: These are God’s creatures that are not to be abused, rather, to behold and protect. I am looking forward to 2025 and the many opportunities that Tonia and will have to share our passion for animals and deepen our bond of trust as we work together. am also filled with joy that get daily kisses from my dog Jeda, soft neigh’s and nuzzles from my horses, and well…the llamas are a different story LOL! The friendships I have in my life are my greatest treasure. As the holiday nears, I wish you a merry and bright Yuletide season as you celebrate your blessings of friends, both human and animal.
During the holiday season, we are reminded of the magic of giving, the profound effects of helping those in need, and the importance of family and friends. With the message of Christmas forefront in our hearts, it’s a reminder to thank those that bravely serve our military so that we can have the ultimate gift…FREEDOM.

What’s Taking So Long?
What to Expect At An Emergency Hospital
If you’ve ever had to bring your pet to an emergency hospital, you may have noticed that it is not like a visit to your regular veterinarian’s office. A primary veterinarian’s practice is typically run on an appointment basis, meaning you call in advance, book a time, arrive before the appointment, and are seen at your appointment time. An emergency hospital runs on an alternate system known as a triage based system. Although all cases are important, this system prioritizes the most serious of cases. The most critical cases are given priority over what are considered less serious, non life-threatening cases. In triage medicine for animals, much like human hospitals, it doesn’t matter if you got there first, called ahead, or know someone who works there. The primary consideration is the severity of a pet’s illness or injury.
A triage evaluation generally occurs in four stages: initial evaluation, nurse evaluation, veterinary examination, and treatment.
1. INITIAL EVALUATION
The first step occurs when you meet the client care coordinator and explain why your pet has been brought to our ER. Our coordinators are trained to listen for and identify key phrases that will determine if an immediate (STAT) evaluation or standard evaluation is needed. The term “STAT” actually comes from the Latin word “statim” meaning “immediately”.
2. NURSE EVALUATION
In the case of a STAT evaluation, your pet will be immediately taken for a veterinarian to examine. In the case of a standard evaluation , a nurse will do a preliminary exam on your pet and ask a series of patient history questions. This exam will be followed with an examination by a veterinarian. Emergencies are graded on a scale of 1 - 5, with a grade of 1 being the most severe.
3. VETERINARIAN EVALUATION
The doctor on duty will evaluate your pet by performing two different types of physical exams. A primary exam is performed to ensure that no immediately life-threatening conditions are present. If a
life-threatening problem is identified, treatment will begin and will continue until the life-threatening problem is under medical control. Otherwise the secondary exam, which encompasses the entire pet, will be performed and the doctor will formulate a tentative diagnosis and treatment plan for your pet.
4. TREATMENT PLAN
At this point, you meet with the doctor to discuss the findings of their exams. They will explain any diagnostics and/or treatments your pet needs. You will be presented with the treatment plan and following your approval, any diagnostics and/or procedures are begun on your pet, results obtained, treatments completed, and your pet will be discharged to your care, unless hospitalization is required. You may wonder why it can take so long and the short answer is, in addition to your pet, there are usually numerous other pets in the hospital that are being cared for, along with new arrivals in various stages of illness and injuries. So remember, the ER’s primary function is to save every pet’s life and by treating the most severe cases first, we can save the greatest number of lives.
Senior Pets
Creating Happy Days
All families want their pets to maintain a happy, healthy quality of life through their senior years. Listed below are some simple daily changes that owners can implement at home to ensure this is the case.
1. EXERCISE
It is important to keep up with your pet’s exercise routine. Allow them to set the pace and duration for walks. However, if you have concerns that they will not set limits for themselves, circle the block to decrease how far away from home you are if they do become tired and need assistance. If they are unable to walk due to mobility decline or illness, taking them for a stroller or wagon ride can greatly improve their well-being by allowing for a change in scenery and introduction to other smells.
2. MENTAL STIMULATION
When pets are unable to walk or exercise, have lost their ability to play with toys, or have lost some of their vision, it is important to promote mental stimulation via alternative routes. Older cats will enjoy food/treat puzzles, snuffle mats, scratch pads, and playing with toy strings or lights near their beds where they can play in a smaller area. Older dogs may like food or treat puzzles, ball rolling games, gentle

Director
tug-of-war games, silicone lick mats with frozen treats, and swimming or floating (via flotation devices) in a pool. Water exercise can be stimulating for their brains and also is easy on the joints.
3. HOUSEHOLD MODIFICATIONS
As pets age, mobility becomes a big limiting factor in their quality of life. A decline in mobility can be due to arthritis, pain, muscle loss or weakness. Families can make some simple household modifications to improve a pet’s quality of life with movement around the house. For high-traffic areas that have slippery surfaces, owners can add rugs or yoga mats which will allow more traction. Another place that should not be overlooked are slick stair surfaces. Removable carpet squares can be purchased from home improvement stores and will give your pet extra confidence and traction when going up and down. Elevating bowls higher off the floor can help dogs put less weight and pressure on their front legs when eating. For older cats, it’s recommended to lower bowls from off high countertops to reduce stress on the joints when jumping down. Assessing the rest of their environment for small steps or lips that may be difficult for an older pet to navigate is also important. Small ramps may help in these situations and can alleviate the need for a pet to jump. If cats are having difficulty getting in and out of the litter box, consider buying boxes with lower edges which require less jumping. Another option would be to sub-
stitute a typical litter box for a long, shallow Tupperware container.
4. HYGIENE
As pets age, many cannot keep up with their hygiene. Cats may stop grooming themselves due to pain or with progression of a disease process. Owners can use a warm washcloth to wash a cat’s face, therefore mimicking normal grooming behavior. Some cats even like having the warm washcloth rubbed down their back. Instead of using a brush, owners can use latex gloves to remove the undercoat of fur which can be less painful for many pets with arthritis. For bathing, there are gloves with multiple small nubs on them that allow brushing while bathing, removing one of the grooming steps entirely and helping with comfort. Waterless shampoo can also be used for a quick clean up that requires less time.
5. HANDS-ON AT HOME
Lastly, it is important for pet owners to routinely rub and massage their pets to identify any new lumps and bumps or any sore areas, especially around joints. Some of these changes can be better managed when caught early, which will improve pain at the beginning stages of disease. Most masses will be much easier to remove when they are small and first noticed, before they grow too large to be able to be treated appropriately. If you notice any of these changes, see your veterinarian so that you can work together to develop a treatment plan for your senior pet.

The Importance Of Socialization For Dogs & Puppies
We are deep into the busiest time of the year! Which also happens to be the time of year that a lot of you will make the decision to add a new family member in the form of a puppy. I help clients make that transition as smooth as possible, guiding them in the best ways to raise and live with their new furry family member successfully and happily. Everyone wants a dog that can go places with them, that can have freedom, that can really be a part of the family. That’s always my goal!
So let's talk about the importance of early socialization! If there’s one thing I can teach everyone to help prevent serious behavior issues later on in your dog’s life, it’s the importance of proper socialization. Lack of early socialization will lead to fear issues, anxiety, reactivity, even aggression. We can always backtrack and teach obedience at any age. But there’s a window of opportunity for socialization.
WHAT DOES PROPER SOCIALIZATION LOOK LIKE?
There is a critical early developmental period from birth through 16 weeks old. Low risk exposure to new things during this period is extremely important to confidence building. Introducing dogs to new experiences in a controlled manner helps build a strong foundation of trust and comfort. When puppies are gradually exposed to novel stimuli—such as different types of surfaces, various sounds, unfamiliar objects, and people—they develop confidence in new situations. This early exposure reduces the likelihood of fear responses, well-socialized dogs are generally more relaxed, friendly, and less prone to behavioral issues. Walks in areas like neighborhoods and parks (on-leash), provide gentle exposure to different sounds, people, and smells. Additionally, indoor environments like pet-friendly stores (not big box pet stores) or visits to friends’ homes can help a dog acclimate to a range of settings.
THE DOWNSIDE OF DOG PARKS AND DAYCARES
While dog parks and doggy daycares
may seem like convenient socialization options, they come with several risks that can hinder rather than help a dog’s development. One of the main drawbacks is the lack of control over the types of interactions your dog will encounter. Dog parks and daycares are unpredictable environments where big groups of dogs of different sizes, temperaments, and ages interact freely. While some dogs tolerate these settings, others may feel overwhelmed or become anxious, especially if they are young, small, or shy. Inappropriate interactions—such as rough play, bullying, or even aggressive behavior—can leave a lasting negative impression, potentially causing fear or aggression toward other dogs in the future. Instead, better options are structured daycare, adventure days, and group training for safer and more beneficial structured socialization options. Look for a reputable professional to help guide you in training and socialization instead of heading to the local dog park or doggy daycare.

Bringing Boeier Back: Houston Zoo Veterinarians Clear Endangered Sea Turtle for Safe Return Home
By: Jessica Reyes HoustonZoo.org
As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight saving a Kemp's ridley sea turtles at the Houston Zoo. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
In a remarkable journey of adversity, Boeier, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was able return to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico after being stranded more than 5,000 miles away from home. Boeier underwent a thorough medical evaluation at the Houston Zoo where veterinarians conducted blood tests, radiographs and a physical examination, to ensure the sea turtle was fit to continue her journey home.
Boeier’s survival story almost didn’t happen had it not been for luck when she got entangled in the net of a commercial fishing boat off the southwest coast of the Netherlands. The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, one of the most endangered species of sea turtle in the world, got caught in a current and drifted away
from its warm native habitat to the dangerously cold waters of the North Sea. The sea turtle was lovingly named after the boat that rescued it and taken to Rotterdam Zoo where the coldstunned sea turtle was nursed back to health. The year-long journey to bring Boeier back home was no easy feat. Luckily, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's persistence and patience in obtaining necessary documentation including the proper Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) permit that ensured the sea turtle’s safe return home as a cargo passenger on a commercial KLM flight from Amsterdam to Houston.
Upon its arrival, Boeier received an initial check of well-being conducted by the Zoo’s
to Stewart Beach in Galveston where her longawaited journey back home came to an end.
Boeier’s story highlights the incredible dedication of the multiple agencies and nonprofit organizations like U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Sea Animal Rescue Team Foundation (Netherlands), Rotterdam Zoo, Houston Zoo, and Texas A&M University-Galveston's Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, among others, who have worked
tirelessly to ensure her survival and successful return to her natural habitat.
Boeier’s journey is a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion in wildlife conservation, and its return to the Gulf of Mexico marks a significant milestone for the preservation of these magnificent creatures.
Anytime a sea turtle is found on a beach or shoreline, members of the public are urged
to quickly report it by calling 1-866-TURTLE-5 (1-866-887-8535) so an expert can assess the turtle and provide care if needed. Houston Zoo guests can help save wild sea turtles every time they visit the Zoo. A portion of each membership and ticket goes toward supporting the Zoo’s sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation program.
sea turtle staff and veterinarian where it was cleared for release from the airport. When it arrived at the Houston Zoo, Boeier was placed a deep water tank to allow her to acclimate.
Two days later a team of experts conducted a detailed medical examination that included a check of organ function, eyes, mouth, shell and flippers. Radiographs allowed the team to take a closer look at her lungs where there were no signs of pneumonia, and a blood draw checked for inflammation, infections and anemia. The juvenile sea turtle was healthy, vigorous and ready to go home.

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS
A FURRY, FEATHERY, SCALY YEAR IN
Wow…what an awesome year meeting and interacting with so many different species of critters! Truly, the opportunity to learn and just experience animals that would not otherwise have a chance to be up close and personal with is my favorite part of being the editor of PetTalk. What fun to get "kissed" by an okapi, feed a sloth, give a pedicure to an elephant, hold a 92 yr. old tortoise, feed lettuce to a group of capybara, and of course spend time with my horse Apache. As for the snake and the Madagascar hissing cockroach...that took some self-talk LOL! In the new year, I hope to bring you even

more wildlife conservation stories from the Houston Zoo as well as other local wildlifesaving organizations. When lived in the city, I naturally had limiited exposure to wildlife. Now that live outside the city, I often get a little more "exposure to wildlife' than I bargained for: a copperhead crawling over my bare foot, a 4t. snake getting in the house, coyotes on the property, mice startling me in the barn...I've earned my stripes this year! Yet, I remain passionate about a message of conservation. In 2025, I hope you'll join me in the quest for knowledge regarding how we can ALL help save animals in the wild.

1. Congratulations on entering the pet product market! Tell us about the Blazer Dog Feeder.
The Blazer isn’t just an automatic dog feeder; it’s a way to show your dog you care about their well-being, even when life gets busy. With the Blazer, you can set precise feeding schedules, giving you peace of mind that your dog is enjoying the right portions at the right times, every single day. Whether you’re working late, taking your kids to practice or want to get away for the weekend, the Blazer keeps your dog’s meals on track, reducing their anxiety and helping them stay healthy. And for dogs that tend to gulp their meals, Blazer’s unique slow-feeding settings allows you to split meals into smaller portions, so they don’t eat too fast. It’s a simple way to make mealtime healthier, happier, and more relaxed for you and your dogs.
2. Sounds like a convenient and healthy way to feed. What prompted you to create the feeder?
We are a division of PRADCO Outdoor Brands based out of Birmingham, Alabama and our company’s history goes back decades,
with a passion and reputation for designing reliable automatic feeders for deer, wildlife and fish in ponds and lakes. Seeing how much dog owners needed a reliable, large-capacity feeder for their canine companions, we knew we could deliver something exceptional. Many of these pet feeders on the market today are made for cats, and only hold a few pounds of feed at a time so you have to fill them every few days to feed a larger dog and they frequently jam with dog food and stop working. They also have small bowls that only hold a small amount of food whereas the Blazer includes a large 8-cup stainless steel bowl that’s removable and dishwasher safe.
3. What would you say are the unique selling points of the product?
The Blazer is the only large capacity automatic dog feeder on the market today, and it doubles as a food storage container. So whether you’re buying dog food in 14 lb. or 20 lb. or even 40-pound bags, you can pour the entire bag into the feeder and let it do the rest. We also designed a patent pending feeding system that feeds all sizes of kibble and our easy to set digital timer has been proven in our other feeders over the past 25 years – it’s ultra reliable and backed by a 5-Year Warranty. The feeder runs off a rechargeable battery so you can place it anywhere, no power outlet required. And it was designed for indoor or outdoor use, so you can place it outside in a kennel, or your pack porch, for example, and it’s pre-wired for an optional solar charger that will keep the battery charged year-round.
4. What is the philosophy of your company?
At our core, we’re pet lovers who want to make a difference. Our mission is to create products that make life better – not just for pets but for pet parents too. Every product we design is meant to enhance the bond between pet parents and their pets, bringing more ease, reliability, and
joy into their lives. The Blazer isn’t just about feeding; it’s about helping pets thrive on a consistent diet, healthy schedule and making life a little easier for the people who love them.
4. Who would you say is the target market?
The Blazer is designed for dog parents who see their pets as family and want to provide consistent, well-timed meals without being tied down by daily feeding schedules. It’s for those who juggle a busy life, work, travel, or just want a little more flexibility – knowing their dog will be cared for, even if they can’t be there.
5. What message would you have specifically to our readers?
For pet parents, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your dog happy and healthy. With the Blazer Automatic Dog Feeder you’re investing in your dog’s wellness and peace of mind for yourself. Watch the videos to see the Blazer in action and learn more at SimplePets.com. The feeders were designed and are built right here in America and ship via UPS Ground.
