Letter from the Editor

On the cover

12TH ANNUAL MEDIA HOUNDS ISSUE

We love this long standing tradition of showcasing a cross-section of local Houston media, along with their pet or an adoptable. This year, our cover features Trason Bragg of KHOU and his pup, Princessa. Meet Trason and 7 other media personalities in our feature story. The awesome photos taken by Allison Wilkins were snapped at various venues around Autry Park, an urban village on the edge of Buffalo Bayou. We are so thankful to the various business tenants that allowed us to use their beautiful space for our photoshoot. To learn more about Autry Park, visit AutryPark.com. (Hint: The dining options are top-notch!)

October is perhaps one of the busiest months in the calendar year…at least for me. Traditionally, October is the time of year when there are the most pet festivals, galas and various fundraisers. It’s not possible for us to attend them all but we do give it a good try! We will be hosting Doodle My World with Meadowlake Pet Resort and taking photos for our November cover story. I am really looking forward to this event because there isn’t much to not like about a pile of Doodles romping, playing and reminding us two-leggers to smile and enjoy life. The next event is Blessing of the Animals which traditionally takes place the first weekend in October as pet owners take their pets for blessings at various places of worship in the spirt of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. If you are so inclined, mark your calendar for the blessing at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (see news section for details). Later in the month, the Houston SPCA celebrates their 100tth Anniversary at their annual Hall-O-Ween Ball on October 25. There are plenty of other Spooky fun events throughout the month so be sure to check out the news section and sign up for our bi-monthly newsletter for all of the de-tails.

In addition to October's standard of being super busy, I have a BIG event that is making October even more exceptional - my son is getting married! Matrimony is a very big deal and the family gathering to celebrate the union of two people who are committing to one another is an exciting time. I am looking forward to seeing lots of people that I haven’t seen for a long time and just enjoying the moment of my son’s happiness. As a parent, isn’t that all we really ever want - for our children to be fulfilled and happy? I think most pet parents feel that

way about their furry kids too. I admit I am a little nervous because I will be giving my first wedding speech but I am just reminding myself it’s a friendly audience LOL! So, as you can see, October is BUSY and will require me to find ways to de-stress (which is most likely grooming the horses along with my daughter Kaia, pictured with me).

This issue is not only about October events and Halloween fun, it’s also our annual Media Hounds issue. This year marks the 12th year of this tradition where we showcase a cross-section of local media with their pet or an adoptable. It sometimes goes unnoticed that our local media personalities take their personal time to help the Houston animal community. Whether it is a news station featuring adoptables, a radio station hosting a fundraiser, or a media “hound” providing free emcee services at animal welfare fundraisers, it’s all activity that supports animals in need and for that, we at PetTalk want to thank them for their work. We feature 8 media personalities in this issue and I hope you enjoy meeting them and finding out a little more about their pets.

We really can’t talk about October without venturing into Halloween, which is a time of the year that we get to be extra silly, including our pets. Dressing our fur kids in costumes, as well as ourselves, and attending events to show off our creativity is a big part of the whole “ordeal”, along with sampling the “ghoulish” punch! Check out the Halloween shopping guide we have curated for those that love to get their spook on!

Mark your calendar to attend a few October happenings - we would love to meet you!

Henrietta on Bowling With Cats Henrietta

My occasional musings about my feelings regarding cats is often fraught with dangerous pitfalls. If I speak the truth regarding my malevolence for felines, mom (unfortunately also my editor) will emerge from her office in her notoriously fire-breathing dragonesque style and basically have a hissy fit. It's zero cool. If I don’t speak my mind, my compadres from the Salty Dog will have a field day. “Henrietta’s gone soft” (and they will not be talking about my midsection…this time) or “Henrietta, what’s wrong, too much catnip?” and on the taunting will go. See my dilemma here?

After much consternation and a few cupcakes, a bag of spicy Doritos and a chilly cheese dog from James Coney Island, I decided to go for it. I don’t know if it was the sugar from the cupcakes or the fire in my belly from the Doritos having a party with the chilly, but I threw caution to the wind (and I might have broke a little wind too) and decided to face the consequences of Dragon Lady’s wrath. You will soon see why this was an ill-fated decision.

I sat down at my 1972 Royal typewriter (one of my prized possessions because I love anything royal) and began pecking out my brilliance. “Hello fans! As you know, I enjoy being your Rovering Reporter and sniffing out great deals, finds and fun adventures to report to you each month. Today I have some advice for expanding your horizons and finding new things to entertain yourself. Let’s say it’s a Saturday night and you’re really bored with the same ‘ol, same ‘ol of going to a movie or watching Henry chase his tail. Try something new…go bowling with cats! Yes, it's all the craze. The way I calculate it, if cats have 9 lives and you can bowl a perfect game, you should be able to get through 13 frames with only 14.4 cats.”

she snapped up my column scanned it quickly and just as I was stealthily exiting the door she yelled, “Henrietta! My office immediately!!” Crapola.

I trotted in with a big fake 100 watt smile and said, “Yes, Mother?’

“Henrietta, you absolutely must get over this ridiculous disdain and intolerance for cats. They are lovely independent creatures with discerning taste.”

“The last one I ate didn’t taste discerning,” I offered, thinking humor might get me out of this jam. Not.

“Henrietta, enough! I am going to give this some thought

"I'm in trouble with DL," I mumbled.

"Oh Henrietta, you're always in trouble with Dragon Lady. We thought it was something serious," they laughed as they jumped back up on their barstools to finish their game of Five Paw Draw.

"No guys," I protested, "it's really serious this time."

"What happened that's different?" Penelope asked.

"Well," I replied, "honestly I didn't think it was that big of a deal. For my column, I wrote about bowling with cats."

My column goes on to say that bowling with cats would give new meaning to hair balls and praised the fast cocktail service at the cat bowling alley, Unlucky Strikes. I put a few more tidbits of valuable information in my column and handed it in just under the 5pm deadline. As you might have guessed, I surmised that 5pm, also known as closing time, would be the best opportunity for me to live to see another day.

For all of her negative attributes, DL has one really good one - she can smell a rat a mile away. Sensing my hurry to exit the office,

and decide if you should be allowed to continue writing your column. If you can’t be more INclusive, then you might end up EXclusive, meaning out of the office!” breathed the mad dragon. Oops.

While my brain was asking my mouth why it said something so stupid to a raving mad woman, I moped over to the Salty Dog, tail between my legs, bottom lip drooping, shoulders sagging.

With just a glance at my demeanor, Hortense, Penelope, Felicity, Harold, Max and Felipe jumped from their bar stools and surrounded me.

"Henrietta, what on earth happened to you?" they asked.

"What's wrong with that?," Penelope asked. "I mean, maybe they aren't the best bowlers because they're too worried about being called alley cats but I'm sure they would still be fun to bowl with." If I could see in her ear, it would be dense fog.

"No Penelope, not bowl with cats but bowl WITH cats," I corrected.

Silence from the group. For maybe the first time ever. Finally, Hortense spoke. "You mean cat pins as in cats are the pins?" I nodded. More silence.

The gravity of my faux paw was sinking in. I had finally crossed the line and even my compadres were standing in judgement of what I believed to be one of my best attributes, my candid sarcasm.

Then, as I stood there awash in shame, they all began laughing hysterically. We're talking bent-over belly laughing with tears kind of laughter.

Oh thank God. For a second I thought they had all somehow damaged their prefrontal cortex.

"That's quintessential Henrietta", quipped Hortense, "#TempTheDevil."'

Then came the fateful question from Harold. "What are you going to do about DL?"

"I'm going to walk into her office and say, 'I'm sorry. Let's make up by playing a game. Let's play horse. I'll be the front end and you be yourself."

Actually, I'm only going to say the first part, lest I lose my face, and think the rest...and then I'm going to offer to take her to dinner at Joey's Grill. I hear they are serving CATfish.

Astros Dog Day

There’s no bones about it, this year’s annual Houston Astros Dog Day was a blast! A sold-out crowd of dog-loving Astros fans filled the concourse for a pre-game visit to vendors and the HEB outdoor fun zone where the popular costume contest was held. The contest boasted over 40 entries and all were creatively adorned in Astros-themed costumes, vying for prized baskets from

Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Raising Cane’s Chicken. The assortment of dogs in all shapes and sizes brought lots of smiles to everyone’s faces! Astros Dog Day is an annual event and tickets sell out fast so stay tuned to the Astros website for next year’s event. PetTalk enjoyed meeting so many of our readers and handing out magazines and grocery totes - it is one of our paws-down favorite events of the year!

The Haunting of Fright Manor: For Homeless Animals

Meet Dan and Kim Petter, the family behind The Haunting of Fright Manor. Dan and Kim live in the neighborhood of West Ranch, in Friendswood, and since 2012 they have been bringing the “boos” to friends, neighbors, and their community. They hold an annual haunted house that brings in nearly 1500 people each year. The Petters do not charge for their labor of love –they accept donations – and this year they will again partner with Three Little Pitties Rescue to donate the proceeds from the 5-day event.

The idea for the haunted house first started after their daughter’s Halloween-themed Sweet Sixteen party. Not wanting the decorations to go to waste, the Petters decided to create a Halloween façade on their garage doors that year. The elaborate decorations attracted attention in the neighborhood, and led to numerous inquiries about whether they were hosting a haunted house. This inspired Dan and Kim to get creative. The following year they moved the decorations into the ga-

rage, and the rest, as they say, is history!

The Haunting of Fright Manor has continued to grow, and each year it takes months of planning. The Petters want the event to be something that people of all ages can enjoy, so they look for themes that aren’t too scary. Kim enjoys scouring FB Marketplace, antique stores, Halloween stores for inspiration, while Dan designs and builds all the walls which lead attendees through all the spooks.

When Dan and Kim started the Haunting of Fright Manor, they wanted to provide fun for their friends and neighbors. The Petter’s hearts are with animals, so when people offered to pay, they decided to help homeless dogs and cats. In 2023, Dan and Kim learned about Three Little Pitties Rescue, an all-breed dog and cat rescue based in Friendswood, TX, and offered to support the organization with the proceeds from the event. This year The Haunting of Fright Manor will take place October 18/19, 26/27, and 31, from 6-9pm each night. The event is located at 2560 Scenic

Hills Drive, Friendswood, TX. You can watch the haunted house come to life with updates on their FB page: Facebook.com/friendswoodfrightmanor.

Presentation October 20

October is Epilepsy Awareness month and Gulf Coast Epilepsy Alliance is having their 4th Annual Butterfly Release Award Ceremony, Puppy Presentation & Epilepsy Expo. This fun event is on October 20th, at Moody Mansion in Galveston. GCEA has seen first-hand how Epilepsy Alert Dogs can change the lives of children with epilepsy and they are on a mission to provide families with dogs that save lives and warm hearts. GCEA will present three deserving families each with a puppy. These pups will grow up to be trained assistance dogs alerting their owner when a seizure is coming on so that they can be prepared and safe. GCEA could not do this without the generous support of Animal Alliance of Galveston County, Galveston Island Humane Society and Gulf Coast Tiny Paws Rescue. Be sure to mark your calendar for this very special and very fun event! There will be a Pop-Up Market, Food Trucks and a Butterfly Costume Contest. Attendees also get access to the

MEDIA HOUNDS 12th Annual Issue

A Special Thank You To The Tenants of Autry Park For The Use Of Their Venues. Please See Page 38 For More Details.

In a world of the 24-hour news cycle, media is ubiquitous - from television, radio, podcasts, magazines, websites and more, a great deal of the information we consume is filtered through or generated by media. Without media as a conduit, many citizens would remain uninformed.

Most importantly, the media helps get the word out about many urgent or pressing issues, including matters relating to animals in our community. Whether it be overcrowding in shelters with an urgent call for adoption, or animal cruelty cases, or even the dire situation of animals in need during a natural disaster, media outlets step up to do what they can to assist.

Often, media helps turn bad situations into “happy tails” and for their part in doing so, PetTalk created the Media Hounds Annual Issue 12 years ago to highlight various media personalities and their pets (or adoptable pets, as in this issue with Astros' Julia Morales showcasing a pup from Houston Pets Alive!) as a way of thanking them for their dedication to animal causes. We asked our participants fun questions about themselves and their furry friends to give our readers a glimpse into their worlds. Enjoy meeting this year’s “hounds”!

"ANIMALS ARE RELIABLE, MANY FULL OF LOVE, TRUE IN THEIR AFFECTIONS, PREDICTABLE IN THEIR ACTIONS, GRATEFUL AND LOYAL. DIFFICULT STANDARDS FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE UP TO."

TRASON BRAGG

KHOU 11 News

With “Princessa” at Hanover Autry Park

Tell us how you found Princessa.

Princessa is a rescue. At my former station, the first month I was there, they held an adoption event. I saw her, we connected immediately. I called my wife and said I have to bring her home! Thankfully she agreed, and the rest is history!

Sounds like you might naturally be an animal lover?

Yes! I love animals like I love all living things. At one point as a kid I actually had about 12 pets, I even wrote a book about it for an elementary school project. I do think there is something special about dogs though.

Clearly Princessa landed in the right home! What is her favorite pastime?

She loves a good walk, and some cuddle time.

If Princessa could say something to you, what do you think it would be?

I think her first words would be "I love you dad, now let's play!"

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My hobbies are writing, exercising, and most importantly playing sports with my son.

What made you choose media as a career?

I pursued a career in media because more than anything else I’m a people person. I love meeting new people, sharing experiences, educating, and learning from everyone I meet.

If you could be an animal for one day, what would it be and why?

Tiger, because it’s my son’s favorite animal, LOL! It would be a day he would never forget!

What’s your favorite food?

It’s been said the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!

A good Argentinian steak cooked on the Parrilla!

If your Princessa was a super hero, who would it be?

Princessa would definitely be the Flash.

What is the number one thing you would want to tell the public about responsible pet care?

I would say the most important thing to remember when it comes to responsible pet care is remember your pet is a living thing. Treat them how you would like to be treated.

As a newbie to Houston, tell us what you like so far.

The diversity, and the way neighbors show up for neighbors in tough times!

Tell us something our readers might find surprising about you.

I’ve backpacked though parts of Europe, South East Asia, and Costa Rica before I decided to pursue a career in news.

JULIA MORALES CLARK

Space City Home Network

Tell us about how animals have played a role in your life.

I grew up with pets in a small town. They’re a part of the family! Nala, my childhood cat, and the family dog, McGregor, will always hold a special place in my heart.  Tell us more about your friend here, Kiki. She is a gentle giant, always wagging her tail, loves to ride in the car, go to restaurant patios, swim...she's so fun! She is also good with kids, potty trained and so smart (she figures out food puzzles easily). She would truly make a GREAT additon to a family! Kiki does sound like the dream dog. Thanks for promoting her! We KNOW you love America’s pastime, Baseball, but what other things do you enjoy?

I wish I had time for hobbies!! I started an apparel shop for sports fans called Shop Baseball, Y’all and it’s what I’m working on with any spare time.

You are such a great media professional! Why did you choose media as a career?

I wanted to be a TV reporter when I was 10 years old. My father ran for U.S. Senate in 1996 and I was exposed to media and fell in love with the thrill of live television.

If you could be an animal for one day, what would it be and why?

I’m so jealous of a lovable house cat who finds the warm spot in the sun to nap and does things on their own time.

What is your favorite food?

Take me out for Sushi!

What is your fave music?

Music is all over the place for me. The players’ music in the clubhouse keeps me young and hip. I love the current stuff, Dua Lipa seems to always be on in my car.

What do you think your pet would ask you if they had a chance?

Where are you all day?? We haven’t been able to adopt a pet because of our travel schedule, so that’s why fostering is so special to us. We’re able to do so during the offsea-

son when we have time.

Tell us more about your animal welfare work. I started fostering dogs through Houston Pets Alive! in 2018 after getting to know the organization when I covered them at events post-Hurricane Harvey. I joined the Board shortly after becoming involved and hosting fundraising events. I am currently an advisor to the Board while continuing to host events throughout the year.

Tell us a secret about you that our readers might not know.

I have been the Astros reporter for 12 years, since the team switched over to the American League. After high school, I was a Kilgore College Rangerette before transferring to UT where I was on Texas Pom when the Longhorns won the 2005 National Championship.

If you are interested in adopting Kiki, visit HoustonPetsAlive.org to learn more.

MAYRA MORENO

With “Luna” at MF Lobster & Ceviche

Tell us about how Luna became part of your family.

Luna is our rescue Siberian Husky from a local shelter we came across while scrolling on Twitter. As soon as I saw her picture, I immediately told my husband we have to go see her and the rest is history.

Sounds like love at first sight! Was it easy for her to adjust to her new home?

The first year that we got her, we let her loose while we were at work and when we got home, we saw she took a box of pens and chewed them. Ink was everywhere!

Yikes! That’s a puppy for you! Now that she’s settled in, what does she love to do at home?

She likes when we chase her around the house. We say “ready, set, go” and she goes wild! She loves doggy biscuits, but her favorite are these pig ears that we get from a local farmers market in East End.

Does Luna have any other cute quirks?

Before we take her out for a walk, she has to circle around us about four or five times before we can leash her.

Love that. Speaking of going out, what does she like to do outside?

Her favorite pastime is going on long walks along the Bayou or during the winter time sitting out on our patio people watching and basking in the sun while it’s cold. What about you? What are some of your favorite things to do?

I like taking long walks. I enjoy hikes whenever and wherever possible. Running. Arts and crafts is another one. I can bedazzle anything.

It must be fun to emcee events. Have you emceed any animal charity events or worked with any animal charities?

I have a weekly segment called Qué Pasa Houston so if I know of any event for pets, I make sure to mention it. I co-emceed the organization Barrio Dog’s annual Let’s Play Lotería fundraising event (which I already committed to 2025). I have also co-emceed Pug Hearts of Houston’s annual gala — Pugs on the Bayou. Previously, I participated in ABC 13’s Pick Your Pet adoption event with BARC.

That’s so great! Have you always been a animal lover?

I have always been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. Growing up I actually had two parrots (at different times). We did have a dog growing up as well. What has Luna has taught you about being a pet parent?

Please treat your pets like family. Love them as much as you can because they are not around for too long. Spay and neuter them! And by all means, if you feel you cannot care for a pet, please don’t get one until you know you’re absolutely ready for them.

That’s great advice. You seem so comfortable connecting with people. When did you realize you wanted to be a broadcaster? I have always been a “newsie” since I was a young kid. I remember watching Barbara Walters on 20/20 and I wondered if I could be a broadcaster one day. I wanted the opportunity to tell people’s stories. A big part of it was to give a voice to those in my community.

PAUL GALLANT

ESPN 97.5 & 92.5

With “Arya” at Hanover Autry Park

How did Arya come into your life?

My mom found her on Craigslist and we went and picked her up!

Would you say you are a “cat” guy?

My parents are both from families of cat enthusiasts. It must be genetic.

What is Arya’s favorite tasty morsel?

Arya's a bit of a beggar when I cook chicken. Nonstop head bunting and leg rubbing until I give her a few pieces. She knows exactly what she's doing.

What is her favorite pastime?

Napping within arm’s reach of me.

Does your feline goddess have any idiosyncrasies, or funny habits?

Never close a door, she'll try to open it while meowing until she gets bored and falls asleep by it.

What do you think Arya would say to you if she could talk?

MORE CHICKEN B#*@CH.

And I bet you give it to her! What do you like to do in your free time when you're not under Arya’s paw?

Playing flag football, go to the gym, and cooking. Drinking with friends is pretty fun too.

So, you love football…that’s a shocker LOL! Did that inspire you to be an ESPN media hound?

I thought I was going to play in the NFL until I was done playing high school football. Covering it for a living was the next best thing! Also, I never shut up.

What is your fave food?

Steak is the best. I wish cows weren't so cute.

If Arya could be a super hero, what do you think she would fancy herself to be?

Based on the time she got spicy with a German ShepherdHusky mix, she probably thinks she is a super hero.

What is Arya’s worst trait?

Gotta say, as far as cats go she's extremely well behaved. She does randomly hate my Mom though, which is very strange given that my Mom was the one who found her on Craigslist!

Tell our readers a secret about you.

I've lived in 5 states: Massachusetts, Florida, New York, Washington, and Texas.

What do you like best about Houston?

Houston's food is second to none, but the people here are the best. If I've learned anything from the many issues we've gone through as a city - largely weather related - it's that everyone has each other's back. It's got an incredible sense of community, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

KARA WILLIS

Evening Anchor at CW39

With “Scotty” at MF Lobster & Ceviche

Tell us about how you and Scotty became besties in life?

Scotty is a rescue! After losing my precious childhood pet, Mocha, Scotty found me at a point in my life where I was healing from a very difficult loss. There was a post online from someone who wanted to re-home Scotty (who at the time was named “Baby”) to prevent him from going to a shelter. I instantly fell in love with his pictures and playful spirit. I made the call and the rest was history. My husband and I brought Scotty to his forever home.

Aww...that’s a cool story! Have you always had a soft spot for animals?

I’ve always had a deep connection with animals since birth. My dad would always say that I got this trait from my late grandmother who also had the same passion. I’ve owned dogs for as long as I can remember and promised myself that I would always work to save them.

What is Scotty’s favorite treat?

He loves banana pancakes and pup cups.

That’s an interesting combo LOL! What about a favorite toy?

A stuffed lambchop.

When Scotty isn’t ruff-housing with his lambchop, what else does he like to do?

He loves to swim!

Tell us more about you. Why did you choose media as a career?

I love storytelling and I enjoy telling the stories of our community - especially for the voiceless. News is always changing, so it’s always been a career that I’ve not only enjoyed, but keeps me busy and making a difference. If I can touch at least one life through a story, I’ve always said that I’ve done my job.

What are your hobbies?

I love to travel, go to brunch, explore new places around town and spend quality time with Scotty at the dog park.

If you could be an animal for one day, what would it be?

I would be a sloth because it’s fascinating to see just how they go through life taking their time without being in a rush.

What is your favorite food?

Mexican! I love Los Cucos and Pappadeaux and Scotty loves visiting PUCCI Cafe in Katy.

Scotty has very discerning taste - we love PUCCI Cafe too! If Scotty could talk, what do you think he would say?

“What do you mean I’ll get fat if you and daddy give me unlimited treats?”

Are you involved in any animal welfare causes?

I host a pet segment on CW39 where I highlight the hard work of our animal rescue and shelters. It’s important to me that I continue to show support in any way that I can to help fosters, people working in shelters and to fight for the needs of all animals in need of a better life.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know. My Bachelor's Degree is in Theater Arts, so from Middle School through my earlier adult years, I did a ton of play acting. I’ve also been a choreographer for Legally Blonde. My goal is to get back to the stage after I find some more balance from working a busy morning news schedule!

BRAD GILMORE

With “Luna” at Hanover Autry Park

How did Luna find her way into your life?

Luna was born as part of a litter of six kittens, and my wife, Farah, was lucky enough to snag her. Luna isn’t exactly a rescue cat, but let's be honest—she’s the one who did all the rescuing. When I met Farah, Luna was already her best friend. Once we got married, it didn’t take long for me to realize just how much joy Luna brought to Farah—and into my life, too. It’s safe to say she’s got both of us wrapped around her little paw.

Would you consider yourself an “animal person”?

There’s not a time in my life where animals haven’t been a huge part of it. My earliest memories are of my first dog, Rocky, and going to get our first cat, Romeo. My parents and grandparents cared for animals more than they probably cared for people, and I inherited that love.

I get it! Animals are a great part of life. What does Luna like to play with?

Luna can make a toy out of anything! From gift wrapping paper to grocery bags, socks, and her little toy mouse—she loves them all!

If Luna could speak, what would she say to you?

“Feed me… again!”

Does Luna have any funny habits?

Luna has a very funny habit—whenever we’re away from the house for too long, she’ll find a sock somewhere and drag it down the stairs to leave it for us to find. It’s her way of letting us know she wasn’t happy with our absence!

Other than being a devoted pet dad and media personality, what other things do you like to do?

Lately, I’ve been really into writing—creative writing, screenplays, and short stories!

Ooohh…that sounds fun! How did you choose media as a career

When I was a kid, I would watch all the late-night hosts on TV. Old replays of Johnny Carson or watch David Letterman, Conan, Arsenio and Jay Leno. I loved the entertainment, the broadcasting and the interplay of being a host.

But it’s funny—I didn’t exactly decide on a career in media; it found me. I was focused on a possible music career and did an interview on a radio station, and that’s when I fell in love with the medium. So before I knew it, I was working in radio and TV. Never expected I would be on ESPN hosting a show with a childhood favorite of mine Booker T and getting to interview Jay Leno himself along with others who I loved. It wasn’t planned, but I’m so happy to be here!

Since you have an affinity for music, I have to ask what is your favorite genre or song?

I love all music, and I mean that sincerely. Hip hop, country western, and R&B have always been close to my heart. The three songs I could listen to forever are "International Player’s Anthem" by UGK and OutKast, "All I Need" by David Ruffin, and "The Chair" by George Strait.

LAUREN KELLY

KPRC 2 Houston/Houston Life

With “Minnie" at Hanover Parkview

How did Minnie and Buddy (not pictured) come into your family?

After I lost my sweet Bella in 2019, I had the biggest hole in my heart. Minnie came straight up to me when I met her and gave me the best snuggles. It was almost as if she was telling me “I’m here to make everything ok.” Buddy is our sweet rescue, and there was no doubt when my husband and I saw him that he was the missing piece of our family puzzle. That’s so sweet. It sounds like having Minnie and Buddy in your life has really impacted you in a special way.

We are so lucky to have dogs in our lives. They love us unconditionally, no matter what – no questions asked. I’ve always had dogs in my life ever since I was little. I am a better person because I am a dog mom. I constantly feel the need to speak up and protect these precious animals who don’t have a voice to do it on their own.

You certainly have the platform to help advocate for animals. I try to spread the word for as many rescue and pet adoption opportunities as I can. Whether it’s physically going and helping out with events, finding people to foster animals, to helping to pass along flyers and social media posts that will get the info out.

If Minnie could be a super hero what would her special power be?

A super hero that gives the best snuggles and kisses. I’m telling you, Minnie’s sweet face and personality can out anyone in a good mood.

I can totally see that!! Does she also have a silly side?

Minnie used to sit on top of her older sister Zoey’s back. It was the funniest thing - it looked like Minnie was riding a horse! Zoey never moved once Minnie got up there – so sweet! She also sometimes hops around on two of her back paws when she wants something, oh, AND – she sleeps all the way under the covers!

OK, now tell us something silly about you. What if you could be an animal for one day what would you be?

Maybe a fish or a bird? I’d love to know what it was like to breathe under water, and of course how it feels to fly!

Flying around Houston would be a lot easier than driving! What’s your favorite thing about Houston?

As a native Houstonian, my favorite thing has to be the people…and the food! Oh, and the fact that we can wear cowboy boots at any time, and no one here will question it.

Yes, the food!! Do you have a favorite restaurant?

There are so many good restaurants in Houston, but one of my absolute fav’s is Trulucks on Westheimer!

Other than melting hearts, what does Minnie like to do for fun?

There is nothing Minnie loves more than going for car rides! We safely let her stick her head out of the window, and she absolutely loves the wind in her hair.

Tell our readers something about you they would find surprising. My three younger sisters and I were part of a very viral meme back in 2015. It was a photo we had taken at my youngest sister’s engagement. I’m still randomly tagged in that photo to this day!

ANDY RIGGS

93Q Country

With “Sampson” at Lick Honest Ice Creams

How did Sampson become your bestie?

We found him in a litter of puppies that were rescued from the Carolinas at a kill shelter. Wow, well thank you for saving him! Have you always had an affinity for pets?

Pets are amazing therapists and they don’t even know it; they are the only beings on earth truly capable of an almost unrequited love. They will never judge you, never talk back, and are always happy to see you…at least DOGS (and some cats). Ha!

What makes Sampson’s tummy happy?

The guy eats anything. Veggies. Sushi. Fish. He doesn’t discriminate as long as it is not HIS food; he wants what you’re eating. Always.

What is Sampson’s favorite pastime?

Playing in snow. He misses running through the first snow of the winter, he always loved the cold weather back in Wisconsin. Does Sampson have any odd or funny habits? It may be an every dog thing, but he particu-

larly enjoys turning the kitchen floor into a lake when he drinks water like a slob.

When you are not being an awesome morning show host, what do you like to do as a hobby?

Exercising and jumping out of airplanes. 740 Skydives to date.

Why did you decide on a career in media?

I love working in the community and being able to help out in times of need, and get to play some pretty amazing country music while meeting some of the greatest listeners and artists in the business.

If you could be an animal for one day, what would it be and why?

Penguin. Just to try out the flippers in the water.

Hmmm…then I bet you liked our June penguin cover with the Houston Zoo! I agree…it looks like fun to swim like that. Let’s talk music. What other genres do you like besides country?

When I’m not listening to country, I’m all over the place – 90’s rock alternative, Blues, and

Electronic music – I don’t discriminate. What’s your favorite food?

Hot dog. Or a burrito. OOOH! A hot dog wrapped in a tortilla!?

If your furry buddy could ask you to take him somewhere, where would that place be?

The field across from our apartment. There are always other dogs and endless sniffs. Are you involved in any animal welfare causes?

We recently did a fundraiser for Paws for Heroes – they rescue homeless animals, train them to be companion animals – then pair them with Veterans who suffer from PTSD. Amazing organization.

Tell us something about yourself that our readers don’t know or would find surprising.

I founded a nonprofit organization called “HeartHead” - we pay for people’s mental health care and therapy. @HeartHeadHelps on social media, or HeartHeadHelps.com

Once blended, add 1/2 cup unsweetened peanut butter (make sure there is no xylitol!). Blend to desired consistency. Add tapioca starch a little at a time if frosting needs to thicken.

Instructions

» 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

» 2 Grind oats to fine dust in a blender or food processor.

Cats And The Litterbox What Behavior Changes Could Mean

Cats not using their litterbox make for a very frustrating problem.

There are a variety of reasons a cat may suddenly stop using their box. These can be behavioral or medical in nature, and it takes patience and determination and sometimes a few visits to the vet to figure it out.

When a cat suddenly stops using their box, there is a reason. If you are one of the luckier ones on this journey, you will find out that your cat has a simple urinary tract infection and the problem will be quickly solved. If your cat does not have a UTI, it is time to look further into behavioral possibilities, as well as ruling in or out other medical reasons for this change.

Some cats do well with calming aids and pheromone diffusers, and some need

a place to feel safe. Medications like Prozac greatly helps some cats, too. Cats who are declawed can develop pain in their feet and need a soft litter. You may find that your cat does not feel safe in a covered litter box, and you may find out that they DO feel safe in a covered litter box.  This is where the determination part comes in! Careful observation of your cat and any recent changes in your home - no matter how small - can go a long way toward solving this mystery.

We recently had a cat transferred to us for an ultrasound and 24-hour care (having nothing to do with urination outside of the litterbox.) As requested prior to his arrival, his records were sent by his veterinarian and they included an x-ray. We immediately noted severe arthritis in his lower spine and hips, and asked if he had trouble defecating. He did not, but he had been urinating outside of the litterbox in large volumes. Every avenue had been explored…except arthritis. Some cats stand to

urinate and some squat. This cat squatted in the box but stood when he urinated outside of the box. It suddenly all made sense. We recommended a fairly new drug called Solensia. It is a once-monthly injectable monoclonal antibody therapy designed to control osteoarthritis in cats.  Not only did this knowledge offer a very easy solution for our patient, but also for his sister, who had indeed been defecating outside of the litterbox and was showing signs of arthritis as well!

If your cat’s litterbox behaviors change, it is time for a check-up and a look around your home to determine possible reasons for this change.   If your cat cannot urinate or is straining to urinate, possibly vocalizing as they strain, this is most likely a urinary obstruction and is a medical emergency.

Our cats cannot talk to us and tell us what is wrong. They will, however, communicate to us in their own way, and it is up to us as the humans who love them to listen.

Easy Tips to Prevent Pet Slips

Helping Our Senior Pets Keep Their Footing

As our pets age, as with aging humans, they can become less steady on their feet.  This can be due to various diseases including osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal disease, pain, neurologic disease or systemic illness.  If you notice your pet is having trouble with their mobility, be sure to always seek advice from your veterinarian.  In this article we will discuss some easy modifications you can make to help prevent slips from occurring.

Common household floor materials include wood, concrete, and tile. In other words, shiny surfaces that are easy to clean. These smooth materials make for slick surfaces that can be difficult for your aging pet to manage.  A great household

modification that decreases the risk of slipping involves adding yoga mats (easy to clean) or carpet runners throughout the house to create a path for your pet to follow.  Ensure the path easily leads them to their food dishes, beds and elimination areas (near doorways, potty pads or litter boxes).  While they may not initially

notice the path, over time they will come to realize they have better footing and use this path to navigate the house.  It is also important to put non-slip backing on your rugs or yoga mats to prevent human slips.  If you have stairs in the home, it is best to cover each step with a non-slick surface such as adhesive carpet squares or anti-slip treads.   If your pet is struggling to jump on the furniture, it can be useful to provide pet stairs to allow easier access to furniture. These simple modifications to the floors in the home can help prevent 85% of pet slips.

Pets can have difficulty maintaining balance and their footing while eating.   Unlike two-legged creatures, who can easily sit during meals, they rely on the ability to stand in one spot while dining.   When a pet begins to slip and slide while they are attempting to eat, it can create discomfort, pain, and eventually, an actual aversion to eating.  Simply placing a rug or mat under the food bowl and all four of your pet’s feet will increase their confidence when standing still to eat.  Raising the food bowl up slightly can also help prevent slipping.  Dogs and cats carry much of their weight on their front end. As they age, it is common for them to develop arthritis in the back legs. This can cause them to further shift weight forward leading to musculoskeletal pain in the front.  By raising the food bowls up you can help reduce the weight they must shift forward while eating.  For cats, it is important to assess the location of their food bowls as well as their litter boxes.  If the litter box is up a flight of stairs or their dish is on an elevated cat tree, these can be difficult to reach as your cat ages. By moving these essential items to the main living space, you can prevent any unwanted slips and falls.    Finally, there are various ways you can improve the traction of your pet's paws.  One simple technique is to ensure the extra fur (we like to call this “hobbit fur”) between the digital pads and metatarsal/ metacarpal pads does not become overgrown.  When this is overgrown it can re-

duce the traction the pads usually provide.  This fur can be gently trimmed to the level of the pads with scissors or clippers.   Additionally, there are many products that can further increase the traction of the pads, including sprays, powders and stickers.  Each product has pros and cons, we will discuss a few we are familiar with.  Show Foot® is a spray that is commonly used in the show ring for dogs, it is easy to apply to the paw pads via an aerosolized can. It gives just a bit of extra traction to prevent slipping. Paw pad protection stickers are adhesives that you place on the pads themselves that allow extra grip and traction.  These are easy to apply, and most dogs do not mind the stickers on their feet. However, they are quick to fall off when they get wet or if the pet is active outside.  Many are made from the same material as kinesiology tape; therefore, they are easy to remove with minimal discomfort. Socks, booties, and rubber “dog boots” are just a few of the other types of “shoes” you can place on your dog’s paws to decrease slipping. These are easy to apply but some dogs dislike the feeling of having them on their feet. You may need to try multiple types to find one that is a good fit for your pet.  Lastly, a product called Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips® can be placed on each individual nail to improve the nail’s ability to grip and gain traction on surfaces. These do have a bit of a learning curve when placing them on the toes to ensure correct placement. Some pets tolerate the grips well while others do not, especially if they hate having their feet or toes touched. There are many other products available. Unfortunately, none of these are the “miracle one” that works for all pets, and it may take trial and error to determine what is best for your pet.

As our pets age it can be difficult to see them struggle with their mobility.   Always seek veterinary advice if you feel your pet is in pain.  These tips and tricks can help prevent further slips, falls or accidents to keep them living their best life into their senior years.

Corridor Rescue

Determined To Make A Difference

In 2009, while driving through the area en route to work, Deborah Hoffman realized there was a particularly horrible problem with abandoned and stray animals in the Northeast section of Houston. Determined to make a difference, Corridor Rescue was brought to life that year and has grown substantially in its 15 years due to the dire need. Operating solely through the generosity of dedicated donors and supporters, their mission is straightforward: Saving Lives, One at a Time!

The “Corridor of Cruelty” is located in

byline

Northeast Houston, near Highway 59 & Little York. The area encompasses about fourteen square miles, in which there are numerous feeding stations at known dumping grounds and on back roads identified for abandoned animals. Sadly, the Corridor area is known for animal cruelty. The animals are unwanted, seen as a nuisance, and in some cases wrongly thought of as aggressive. People hit them, throw things at them, shoot them, fight them, and even deliberately run them over.  There is a strong focus to educate Corridor-area residents about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets, offering free sterilizations whenever possible. The same applies to basic veterinary services, such as vaccine and microchip clinics.

Each dog brought into our program receives medical care and enrichment to

begin healing and to put them on the road to their forever home. What started as a one-woman show now has multiple volunteer teams and a kennel facility where our rescued street dogs are directly brought off the street for rehabilitation. The facility can house up to 38 dogs and is staffed with two Veterinary Technicians and three Kennel Technicians. As a volunteer-based organization, we are always looking for enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated, and animal loving volunteers to join our team! Corridor Rescue has a number of areas that you can help save lives. Consider gifting your time and efforts to their noble cause. Reach out today and make a difference tomorrow! info@corridorrescue.org CorridorRescue.org/volunteer

The Risks Of On Leash Greetings

Why A Walk Shouldn’t Be Social Hour

The modern dog owner spends a lot of time thinking about their dog’s social skills. While exercising doggie social skills can be important, it is more important instead that your dog practices maintaining composure when near other dogs. This is especially crucial during the walk, as allowing your dog to meet other dogs during this time will interfere with achieving good leash skills; something that most dog owners want! This is just one reason why the walk shouldn’t be a social hour.

Have you seen dogs that bark and lunge out in public? This type of behavior can occur seemingly out of nowhere. What we do know is that dogs have a natural resistance to physical pressure, which is called an opposition reflex. The tension

leash. Again, these spontaneous behaviors can manifest as this is simply just a reaction to some form of restraint or obstacle. Your dog is better off engaging with other dogs without a leash because this will allow space for them to move freely and investigate one another without obstruction. Without a leash, a greeting is more natural and loose, and considered more polite than what would be a much too direct greeting on leash. Good social skills and leash skills can be compatible if you teach your dog that the walk is the time to be neutral towards others. If you can establish this expectation, you will have a much more pleasant walk because your dog will be more focused on you instead of anticipating saying hello to other pedestrian companions! When it comes to the walk, always work towards keeping your dog more indifferent than excited or frustrated by distancing yourself from others and limiting other dog encounters! byline

that pulling on a leash creates can cause frustration, as the leash limits your dog and hinders natural exploration. This is why poor leash manners and leash reactive behaviors are so common! Because of the barrier frustration that builds on leash, it would never be an ideal scenario to have your dog meet another dog during a walk. Each time a dog meets another stranger dog, the first thing that is assessed is whether or not this other dog is a threat, which can sometimes make an initial greeting tense in the first few seconds. When it comes to meeting others, you always want to set your dog up for a proper and appropriate interaction, so it is best to accomplish this off leash in a secure area. Also, not all dogs enjoy being approached by other dogs on a leash. Even if both dogs are otherwise sociable, this doesn’t always translate to instances where there is a barrier involved. Oftentimes, leash reactivity or barrier frustration is not an indication of whether or not a dog would be friendly off

Houston Zoo Takes Charge Towards a Greener Future

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the zoo's sustainability and conservation efforts. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

Houston Zoo has commitment to sustainability and conservation efforts with a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental footprint. Houston Zoo’s brand-new administrative headquarters building (HZHQ) has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, the second-highest level of achievement in the world's leading green building rating system. The building has been designed to use 24% less energy than a standard office building through an efficient HVAC system, energysaving LED lighting, and glass that reduces solar heat. Indoor water use and irrigation has also been significantly reduced, and 100% of the glass used is bird friendly, which improves

its visibility to birds and helps avoid collisions. This recognition positions HZHQ as the first LEED-certified building at Houston Zoo, with additional projects underway.

Birds of the World's ACE (Avian Care Environment) building was most recently awarded LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the Zoo's second LEED-certified building. Although only buildings can be certified under the LEED rating system, the Birds of the World exhibit area and its sustainable features were included in the certification boundary, a rarity for zoo projects.

In a significant step towards energy efficiency, Houston Zoo has embarked on a journey to become a 100% LED Zoo. The recent transition of the Reptile and Amphibian House

to LED lights marks a milestone achievement, slashing energy used for lighting by a remarkable 70%. Similar transitions are planned for Wortham World of Primates and other Zoo areas. Not only does this initiative promise a brighter and more immersive experience for visitors and keepers, but it also eliminates the environmental hazards associated with fluorescent lights, which contain mercury. By embracing LEDs, Houston Zoo underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship. Keeping animal welfare top priority, Houston Zoo is thrilled to have the opportunity to expand its cell phone and small electronics recycling program. Earlier this year, the Zoo was one of the organizations partnering with Harris County to win a $4.86 million grant from the

Department of Energy for electronic and battery recycling. Leveraging this opportunity, the Zoo aims to further grow its recycling program. The Zoo’s electronic recycling program currently accepts handheld electronic devices like cell phones, iPads, handheld gaming devices, and more.

These devices contain a material called tantalum, that is derived from the mineral coltan. Coltan is destructively mined in central Africa, where animals like chimpanzees, gorillas, and okapi live. When the metal is taken from these animal habitats, their homes become disrupted, and these animal populations dwindle. By recycling electronic devices, the Zoo contributes to the preservation of crucial animal habitats in central Africa. Currently, the

Zoo recycles approximately 1,000 small electronic devices each year.

Houston Zoo is also making strides along with its retail and culinary partner, SSA Group. SSA recently released a new line of plush animals crafted from 100% recycled materials. These eco-friendly toys exemplify a fusion of innovation and environmental stewardship. The product line boasts an array of beloved Houston Zoo animals, including favorites like the black bear, penguin, and red panda among others. These plushies serve as tangible symbols of the Zoo's commitment to sustainability.

Through these initiatives the Zoo is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also paving the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve occupies about one-fifth of the Ituri forest in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The reserve contains threatened species of primates and birds and is inhabited by traditional nomadic pygmy Mbuti and Efe hunters.

PART 3: GOLDEN YEARS AT THE HOUSTON ZOO

Someone once said, “Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art,” and if ever that were so, it’s on display with some of the “seniors” at the Houston Zoo. Age is an interesting thing - it defines our time on earth and belies our amount of experience and wisdom in many cases. I recently learned that the oldest animal at the Houston Zoo is 92 years of age, which prompted me to create this 4-part series highlighting some of the animals at the zoo that are in their Golden Years, and yes, they are works of art! As senior citizens for their species, as well as great ambassadors, I wanted to learn more about them and share with you.

SAY HI TO Kwame, a 25 yr. old Okapi

Why I Love Animals is a monthly feature written by our Editor with the mission of educating the public on the value of all species.

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS

One of the rarest and most beautiful animals at the Houston Zoo is the okapi (oh-cop-ee) or forest giraffe. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Kwame and the other okapi in the herd, you are missing an amazing opportunity to see a gorgeous animal that you most likely would never see otherwise. Actually, a good day to visit these "giraffe cousins" is October 18, World Okapi Day!

For this story, as part of our 4-part series on species in their Golden Years at the Houston Zoo, we are focused on Kwame, who is the oldest of the okapi at the zoo. He is soon to be 25 yrs. young (which is actually a "senior" for his species). Although he may be getting on in years, Kwame is still very vibrant and mischievous! His fur looks like brown velvet and I really wanted to touch it but of course I can't do that! However, he had NO PROBLEM touching me with his long, scratchy tongue LOL! I was forewarned that he might "kiss" me but I didn't truly understand

what that meant until I met him and he gave me a BIG lick across the face. His tongue was rough like a cat's tongue so although I appreciated the gesture, it kinda hurt! But, I do like firsts in life and that was definitely a first for me - a kiss from a forest giraffe!

As a senior, Kwame gets a little extra attention. According to hoofstock keeper, Kim Siegl, Kwame gets routine bloodwork and physical exams to monitor his health. He also receives special finely chopped hay that is a little easier to digest, a higher calorie diet, and vegan Omega 3 fatty acids for his joints. No doubt Kwame is well cared for and it shows in his vibrant coat, bright eyes, and outgoing personality.

Even before my big smooch, I already thought these creatures were so interesting! The okapi is found in only one rain forest in the Congo and was only discovered in 1901, which is much later than other mammal discoveries. The okapi live deep in the forest and it is very difficult to catch

sight of them. They forage on trees and are mostly found in the Ituri Forest.

Due to its shy nature and remote forest habitat, it is not surprising that the okapi eluded science longer than any other large mammal species in Africa. Part of the reason for the elusive abilities of this cud-chewing, hoofed creature is the markings. The coat of the okapi is sleek and deep brown, almost purple, with the sides of the face pale white, and the forehead and ears may have a dull reddish cast. The hind quarters are striped with black and white, and the lower parts of the legs are white with black rings above the hooves. This intricate design is perfect for hiding in the deep forest!

Physically, one of the outstanding features of the okapi is their tongue which reaches 18 inches long (I know this firsthand!), making it perfect for stripping leaves from branches as they browse and forage. Other notable physi-

cal characteristics include the fact that males have short horns (called ossicones) that are completely covered by skin except at the tips. Most females do not possess horns, but may display knobby bumps in their place.

From a conservation perspective, the species is currently classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to threats across its range in the DR Congo which include illegal hunting, forest loss and human encroachment. In doing my research, I found a wide variety of numbers in terms of how many wild okapi exist today. The numbers ranged from a few thousand to 25,000. Quite a difference...which I suppose belies the fact they are truly elusive!

Territorially, the okapi are most active during the day when they spend their time roaming the forest for food. They are mostly solitary but do sometimes feed for a short time with a small group. To claim territory or females, males use their necks to fight with one other.

Okapis are known to also communicate with each other using quiet “chuff” sounds and rely heavily on their hearing in the surrounding forest where they are not able to see very far.

The Houston Zoo is committed to helping save okapis in the wild through conservation partnerships to collect over 1800 snares and reaching thousands through educational messaging on World Okapi Day.

What can you do to help? You can recycle your old cell phones to protect the okapi and other species. The Congo Basin, also a key habitat for gorillas and chimpanzees, is rich in minerals such as coltan, gold and tin that are used in electronics. Recycling helps reduce the demand and mining of their habitat.

As you can see, these rare beauties are fascinating, so don't miss your opportunity to meet them up close. They are located with the other hoofed animals along the Hermann Park Drive side of the zoo.

Blessing of the Animals Celebrating Saint Francis of Assisi's Annual Feast Day

If one can quiet his mind and listen to his heart, sometimes a connectivity with the universe can be felt. That connectivity can extend to other humans, plants, and animals. As noted by Carl Sagan, we are all comprised of the same materials, and whether you call yourself religious, spiritual, or something else it is common to feel and recognize that connectivity.

During the month of October, a service takes place across the world. People from all sects of Christianity come together at places of worship with their pets and animal friends to celebrate the connection between humans, animals, and nature. These events are called Blessings of the Animals. Although it is a practice performed traditionally at Christian churches, many of these churches wel-

come people from all walks of life to join together as a community.

The patron saint, Saint Francis, was a Catholic monk born in 1181. He was named patron saint of animals and the environment just two years after he passed away in 1226. He was known for his work with animals, and for preaching in the forest to birds and other creatures. Francis believed that all beings could appreciate the love of God. The Blessing of the Animals is part of Saint Francis' Feast Day, which is a day dedicated to Saint Francis and what his name represents.

The celebrations usually take place in the first weekend of the month, but some places of worship will host events later in the month.
