DOODLE MY WORLD
The doodle craze continues! The popularity of this mixed poodle breed has been going on for years with no sign of stopping. Pet parents love these affable, silly, charming creatures! To celebrate the doodle, PetTalk joined Meadowlake Pet Resort for their Doodle
My World party to capture these happy pups and their parents. Check out our feature story to see Doodles Gone Wild! Our cover girl GiGi is the quintessential doodle! Co-Publisher, Tonia Whilden, is smitten with her for sure - thanks Gigi for being so darn cute!

Let’s celebrate! There are so many good things happening this time of year that it feels like a perpetual celebration all the way through to next year! From Thanksgiving festivities to Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s and more, it’s time for family gatherings, holiday shopping, giving to others and of course, enjoying our furry friends. In the midst of the rush and stress in our lives, it’s sometimes tough to focus on being thankful for our many blessings. As humans, we all have adversity and we also have bright lights in our lives and when adversity rears its head, it takes up a lot of the “oxygen in the room” and dims those bright lights. Our challenge is to remind ourselves that we have good things to be grateful for. Whether it be our health, our job, our family, our friends, our faith and yes, our pets, take a moment in this season of Thanksgiving to let your heart feel the love you receive and give it back without condition. It feels so much better to be giving to others than to take, and to love instead of hate. Let’s pass along good cheer this season with kindness and smiles!
Speaking of smiles, what could bring a smile to someone’s face more than oodles of Doodles? That’s just what we cooked up for this month’s feature story - a doodle party! Along with our partner, Meadowlake Pet Resort, we hosted Doodle My World to bring together fun-loving Doodles and their parents to enjoy outdoor fun, meet new friends and of course, take photos for PetTalk! We had a great time meeting the pups and their families and we hope you enjoy meeting them in our feature story as well. With the holidays upon us, we always like to offer a bit of advice and resources for those of you that will be traveling and need to board your pets. Houston is home to
some of the BEST pet resorts and boarding facilities that anyone could hope for and we share a list of our sponsors with you, along with boarding tips and other holiday-related safety content. In addition to boarding (or petsitting), we also have curated our annual Holiday Shopping Guide to include some fun finds and great gifts. As always, we encourage you to shop with our sponsors who make PetTalk possible. Without them, we would not be able to publish our magazine, so please tell them you found them in PetTalk so we can continue bringing you the best pet news, resources and content possible!
To get into the holiday mood, check out our news section for the events and contests taking place around town. First, CAP’s Annual Celebrity Paws Gala will dazzle party-goers with dinner, cocktails, live and silent auction, presentation of the honorees, and a chance to win a Subaru, generously donated by West Houston Subaru. Next up, be sure to take advantage of Memorial City Mall’s fun Christmas offerings including Pet Days With Santa where your pet is photographed with the Big Guy (see page 16) as well as their first ever Coca-Cola's Classic Christmas from mid-November through December. Pets are welcomed on a special day, December 1. Read all about it on page 20. And finally, get your pet’s Holiday Flair going and enter our Deck The Paws Holiday Photo Contest sponsored by PetSuites of America. We love to see your creativity! Contest details are on page 21.
Let me close by wishing you all a special Thanksgiving full of love, laughter and giving thanks. Share your love with your family, friends and pets and savor the feeling of love that gets returned right back to you!

Mutts Meows & Margaritas
Friends of BARC hosted their annual Mutts, Meows & Margaritas on September 28th at Cadillac Bar to raise funds for Houston’s animal shelter. Emcee Casey Curry got the party started and encouraged attendees to join in the silent auction and raffle. As a tradition, each party-goer gets the opportunity to select a free stuffed animal
placed around the venue to take home as a gift. This year’s fundraiser was a fun time as always and Friends of BARC, founded in 2003, deserves a big shout out for their efforts in helping the homeless dogs and cats at BARC. For more information about Friends of BARC or how you can get involved to help animals in need, visit FriendsOfBarc.org.

CAP Receives $150K Donation…Anonymously!
Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) is thrilled to announce a generous matching donation pledge of $150,000, which will be utilized to significantly increase the impact of donations made during Giving Tuesday on December 3, 2024. This match comes from a dedicated supporter who is committed to improving the lives of animals in Houston. Every dollar raised on this day will be doubling the contribution and enabling CAP to expand its vital programs and services.
CAP is a privately run nonprofit dedicated to caring for pets in need through sheltering, adoption, humane education, spay/neuter services, low-cost wellness and community outreach. They receive no public or government funding, and rely on the generosity of the community. The average cost of care for each animal is $450, so this generous donation could help more than 330 pets – but with your support, they can double the impact!
TAKE LUCKY, FOR EXAMPLE:
Originally adopted from CAP, then abandoned at another shelter before being returned to them, Lucky's stay was longer than average. Thanks to dedicated staff and volunteers, he lived comfortably while awaiting his new family – and now it's your turn to be someone's lucky charm!
Here's what your gift can do:
» $25 covers Heartworm/FeLV/FIV tests
» $20 covers deworming/defleaing
» $15 covers food for one week
» $30 covers one microchip
No amount is too small, and every penny counts toward finding homeless animals their forever homes. So on Giving Tuesday, please consider helping to match CAP’s anonymous donor's pledge. Learn more at CAP4Pets.org.

VERGI’s “I Survived” Party Celebrates Pets Recovery
The “I Survived” party was created in 2000 by Dr. Laura Noaker to celebrate the lives of pets who were saved at VERGI 24/7. This party is for the pets and their owners and they are given the opportunity to share their stories with all of the attendees. It also allows the VERGI team to reconnect with those patients and to see how saving a life can also change a family.
Many pets had little hope when they came to the ER. Through the efforts of the doctors and staff, VERGI was able to save their pet, giving their family many more years of joy. Dr. Noaker notes, “The celebration also allows our team to see the outcomes of their great work and to feel proud of what they do everyday.” This year will be the 25th
anniversary of the “I Survived” party, hosted at Believe In Dog, and the staff and attendees are all looking forward to this celebration of life. Dr. Noaker adds, “We often only see the patient once in their life and this is our way to see that we indeed save lives and help families. It’s very edifying to our souls.”

top animal ER facilities, visit them online at VERGI247.com. Also, be sure to contact them for a VIP Card that offers 50% Off Initial Exams.

A Doodle Event To Remember At Meadowlake Pet Resort
By Michelle Mantor
Photos By Allison Wilkins Photography
Goldendoodles, Sheepadoodles, Bernadoodles, Schnoodles…Doodles have been all the craze for some time now and continue to be America’s sweetheart dog. In addition to their silly (sometimes crazy) personalities, they are also lauded as hypoallergenic and can have a striking appearance. Typically fun-loving and good with kids, they represent the best characteristics we desire in our canine companions. When we heard about a Doodle Meet-Up at Meadowlake Pet Resort, we knew it was a great opportunity to go have some fun with them, take photos, and celebrate their lovable spirit with our readers. The meet-up was dubbed, “Doodle My World” and was held at Meadowlake’s Galleria location, both indoors and outdoors where there was plenty of room to have a rompin’ good time. Doodles were everywhere in all shapes and sizes. Join us in this fun look at the affable doodle dog!
History of the Doodle
In 1969 Monica Dickens, the great granddaughter of Charles Dickens, bred the first “doodle” variety by breeding a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle in hopes of gaining the benefits of each breed. Dickens wanted the gentle nature of Goldens and the athletic intelligence of Poodles while looking for a remedy to the Goldens intense shedding. In the 90s, Goldendoodles took off and became a well known “designer breed.”
In the early half of the century, Cockapoos and other smaller poodle mixes gained popularity and are still common among today’s poodle mixes including maltipoos, shih-tzu-poos, to name a few. Over time, the desire for the larger poodle mix became in demand and the Standard Poodle was used to mix with a variety of breeds.
For the most part, doodles are lovable, energetic, and fun dogs to be around. They don’t shed excessively, which is one of the top reasons pet parents want them. As mixed breeds, they are also opening up the gene pool, potentially reducing health issues. Decades ago, a “mixed breed” was not necessarily desirable, but we are lovin’ that fact that society has realized that all dogs are awesome, regardless of breed!
Doodle Grooming Tips
While doodles are some of the cutest, cuddliest, and fluffiest dogs out there, doodle owners know all too well that it comes with a price - grooming. Because they are often non-shedding, Goldendoodles and other poodle mixes are some of the most high-maintenance breeds when it comes to grooming. In addition to athome grooming care, this also means taking your pup to the groomer every couple of months for a haircut and spa day. Full grooms can be expensive, so you want the "hair-do" to look just right. Here are a few tips:
1. You need to pick a groomer based on reviews and referrals, not geographic location. Ask for doodle referrals.
2. Expressing your desired style with words is definitely necessary, but sharing photos is very helpful because it minimizes misunderstandings. Use Instagram or Pinterest to find great pictures. Share 3-5 pictures of dogs with haircuts you’re aiming for with your groomer. Pick photos from a few different dogs and different angles.
3. Don’t use electric razor on the body, but instead do an all-over scissor if possible (costs more).
4. Make the length the same all over, about 1/2 inch; or if you prefer “bell-bottom legs, let the groomer know.
5. Trim the tail down.
6. Trim the face short; trim the ears so they don’t get stringy; if you prefer puppy ears, the groomer would need to do layers. Hand scissoring is more costly.
7. Trim the beard to avoid a messy face when eating.
8. When you go to pick up your pup, be sure to give feedback!

Tips For Happy Howl-i-Days
BE AWARE: HOLIDAY HAZARDS
Every year, the holidays bring risk to our pets. From tinsel to table scraps, holiday dangers for pets abound! For the curious, this often includes eating non-food items, plants or toxic foods. Be extra careful to watch for these hazards:
» Chocolate
» Onions, Garlic, Chives, and Leeks
» Grapes, Raisins
» Xylitol (artificial sweetener)
» Alcohol
» Salt Dough for ornament making
» Medications
» Non-Food items like ribbon, string, ornaments
» Plants - Lillies are especially toxic to cats!
With Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s approaching, it “tis' the season” for us to also consider our pets safety and comfort in the festivities. With lots of celebrations, visitors to the house or travel, plenty of cooking and decorating, there is ample opportunity for our pets to need extra attention and care. We want to offer a few tips to help keep everyone smiling (and wagging) through the holidays. From potential hazards, to fun things to do with your pet, to quality boarding and pet sitting options, we have it all here for you!
MAKING MEMORIES: HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES
TO ENJOY WITH
YOUR PET
1.
Local Holiday Events: Houston offers a selection of pet-themed events that welcome furry friends to celebrate the season. In our news section, you’ll find information on multiple events including Pet Days With Santa at Memorial City Mall, Paws n’ Claws at Memorial City Mall, The Muttcracker, and more. For a more complete list, subscribe to our newsletter (see page 52 or visit our website) which details upcoming events in each issue. Photos with Santa are a timeless keepsake so be sure to find an opportunity to get that awesome pic!
2. Enter A Contest: Speaking of awesome photos, choose your favorite image that embodies the Holidays of your pet or with your pet and enter our Deck The Paws Photo Contest sponsored by PetSuites of America. See details on page 21.
3. Go Shopping: Plenty of establishments welcome pets - including the hardware store if you are so inclined to shop there for all of the essentials of holiday decorating! Although as pet parents we might like to visit the hardware store (especially Bering’s where you can find EVERYTHING), our pets might find a different kind of shopping more to their “taste” - shopping for treats! Allowing your pup to select their own tasty morsels is heaven to their discerning nose. Check out the healthy and festively decorated treats at Doggie Express in the Heights or PUCCI Cafe at LaCenterra in Katy (and have a glass of bubbly for yourself while you’re there!).
4. Make A Keepsake Ornament: What a sweet thing to do with your pet! It’s
easy and will result in a forever keepsake of your furry one(s). Just mix the ingredients (1 cup of salt, 1.5–2 cups of all-purpose flour, and 1–1.5 cups of warm water), knead and roll out the dough and cut into circles with a cup. Press your dogs paw into the salt dough and use a straw/pen cap to make a small hole at the top. Bake at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours til totally dry. Decorate with paint, glitter, pretty bow, etc. The decorations will be toxic to pets so hang this treasure high up on the tree.
5.
Dress For The Occasion: There is an enormous amount of holiday-themed attire and accessories for pets - sweaters, dresses, t-shirts, bandanas, bows (with bells for the kitties), collars, harnesses…whatever works
for your dog or cat (or in my case, horse - they both have Santa hats), it’s out there. PUCCICafe. com has some of the most adorable and elegant doggie wear I’ve seen (including the bandanas on this page). Etsy is a great place to find custom items with your pet’s name included.
6. DIY Project With Your Kitty: From cozy cat swings to hang by the window to toys, cat-scratcher wall art and more, this HGTV site has so many fun ideas! Make something special and best of all, affordable, for your cat this holiday season. I’m sure your curious feline will be happy to help! BOARDING YOUR PET:
A Guide To Choosing A Facility
By Tonia Whilden
We all love spending the holidays with our pets. Let’s face it...they’re easier than kids! Unfortunately, we can’t always bring our pets with us. Here are some tips if your travel plans don’t allow for pets. If you haven’t already made reservations early with our sponsors (some of the very best Houston has to offer) then you need to make those arrangements NOW!
HOW TO CHOOSE
Recommendations from friends, neighbors and your veterinarian are a great place to start. Your vet interacts with animal lovers every day and will know which facilities get the rave reviews, and just as importantly, which ones don’t. Social media such as Facebook and Yelp will provide you with reviews and opinions of most reputable facilities. Keep in mind that all pets are different. Try to ask friends with pets that are similar in age and temperament as your pet. The experience of a rambunctious adolescent pet and a mature, shy pet will be different. Do your homework, especially for an extended stay. If time permits, you should do a trial run either for the day or an overnight visit.
QUESTIONS TO ASK A BOARDING FACILITY
» What procedures are in place in the event your pet is injured or is ill? Is the staff trained in pet CPR?
» What procedures are in place for administering medications?
» How many times per day will your pet be walked/exercised and where?
» What are the drop-off and pick-up times?
» Is the facility manned 24 hours/day?
» If your pet is a candidate for playcare, what is the staff-to-pet ratio?
» Are private playcare/exercise sessions available?
» What are the feeding procedures and is water available 24/7?
» Does the facility have on-site cameras that enable you to see your pet at play or in its kennel 24/7?
» Can you contact the facility for updates on the well-being of your pet?
Touring the facility is critical to the decisionmaking process. Do not use a facility where:
» You are not allowed to see where your pet will be sleeping, going to the potty and exercising.
» The facility does not allow impromptu tours.
» The facility is not clean.
» The staff is not attentive or you observe bad attitudes or behaviors.
Take the time to check out facilities that offer the services you desire. It's worth the effort to ensure your pet's safety and care. Never leave your pet somewhere that you aren’t comfortable with.
IN-HOME PETCARE
For a myriad of reasons, boarding is not an option for all pets. Choose someone who you feel comfortable with and who your pet seems to like. In addition to some of the same questions from above, you should also ask:
» Is the petsitter is insured and bonded to protect you and your pet in case of accidents?
» Does the person who will be in your home have a criminal record?
PetTalk is proud to have many reputable boarding options as our sponsors and we encourage you to give them a call - they make PetTalk possible!
Happy Howlidays to all!

Airdog: Keep Your Home Fresh For The Holidays (And Beyond!)
By Michelle Mantor
Have you ever been sitting in your house with the sun streaming through the window and the sunlight accentuates and makes visible all of the particles in the air? It’s quite surprising and this is what we are breathing daily. For those with pets in the house, add on some pet dander and odor also! For me personally, I live in a rural area with horses and llamas and it is the dustiest place I have ever experienced. My house is full of dust and I am constantly cleaning. Recently, although I have never had allergies before, I began coughing due to the poor air quality. I knew I needed an air filtering system so I did my research and found Airdog - which requires no HEPA filters and replacements. Airdog TPA-powered air purifiers not only effectively removes 99.9% common
everyday pollutants, but they also destroy tiny invisible particles that most HEPA filters miss. Beyond that, Airdog TPA air purifiers are designed to maintain consistent purifying without interrupting indoor humidity levels.
I was of course curious how these purifiers work without filters and here’s what I found: Two-pole Active Filtration Technology® (TPA) by Airdog generates a high-voltage, electrostatic field that kills (instead of trapping) 99.9% of bacteria and viruses while trapping even the tiniest particulate (10x smaller than the leading HEPA filters which make up 90%+ of all air purifiers sold) on washable, reusable collection plates. I love the environmentally friendly use of washable plates over filters!
According to the folks at Airdog, the system is “designed with pets in mind to relieve
allergies, eliminate odors and captures 99.9% of airborne pollutants, including pet dander, odor, bacteria, and allergens. The pet-centric design ensures that your cats, dogs, and other pets enjoy a fresher environment as well.” Airdog supplies a cycle of fresh air to a 450 sq. ft living room every 10-15 minutes.
The systems was easy to get set up and I’m enjoying noticeably fresher air and SO MUCH less dust on my furniture and in my lungs! I would recommend this purifying system to literally anyone, with our without pets, because what we breath matters and there is nothing like a fresh smelling house to come home to… along with a wagging tail at the front door! Find out more information or shop for your air purifier at AirdogUSA.com.

Blocked Urethra In Male Cats
How To Identify This Life-Threatening Emergency
One of the most common emergencies we see with cats are urinary obstructions, also called blockages. “Your cat is blocked” means that there is something blocking the urethra, preventing your cat from urinating. This life-threatening emergency occurs mostly in male cats due to their anatomy. While female cats can have urinary blockages, it is not common. Female cats develop urinary tract infections at times, and a UTI can mimic a urinary obstruction.
So what makes male and female cats different? Glad you asked! Male cats have a longer urethra that bends and narrows while female cats have a shorter urethra that does not bend or narrow. The urethra carries urine from the bladder to the external opening. Due to a variety of reasons, cats can develop stones, crystals, sediment that becomes “sludgy”, and/or mucus plugs along their urinary tract. When one
Dr. Laura Noaker VERGI
or more of these things blocks the flow of urine through the urethra, a urinary obstruction occurs. This happens more easily in male cats due in part to the bend in their urethra but mostly due to the narrowing of the urethra that occurs before reaching the penis. Over a very short amount of time after the blockage occurs, the bladder becomes bigger and bigger and very painful, potassium begins to rise (a dangerous condition called hyperkalemia) and urinary toxins that are normally excreted via urination begin to rise. As the potassium and toxins accumulate in the bloodstream, the blocked cat may develop vomiting, depression/lethargy, abnormal heartbeats and in severe cases, can enter a comatose state. Cats will not survive a blockage without emergency care.
If your cat is blocked, a veterinarian or veterinary technician will first flush the material out of the urethra that caused the blockage. A urinary catheter will then be placed, with both procedures performed under mild anesthesia. The cat will be immediately placed on IV fluids and hospitalized for generally 72 hours. Urine output,
as well as necessary bloodwork values, will be evaluated periodically during the hospitalization. These feline patients will be placed on medications that will be sent home upon discharge. It is important that you continue the medications and monitor your cat’s urination at home.
If a cat repeatedly blocks, there is a surgical option called a perineal urethrostomy. This procedure basically removes the narrowing portion of the urethra, creating an anatomy more similar to a female cat.
If you notice your cat urinating outside the litter box, straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, straining unproductively, licking under their tail, vocalizing in pain, or if you see some blood with urination, take your cat to your veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian immediately. Other symptoms of obstruction can include vomiting and lethargy.
Urinary obstructions can be scary for the humans who love their cats and painful for the cats themselves. It is an experience we hope you never have with your cat but if you do, we are here for you and your cats (and dogs!), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
Losing Your Pet
The Hard Decision To Euthanize
Seeing your beloved pet severely ill or debilitated can be incredibly difficult, and making the decision for euthanasia can be anxiety-inducing and nerve-wracking. While we all wish for our pets to die in their sleep, this is unfortunately not a common occurrence. For our animal companions, death does not always come quickly, painlessly or peacefully which is why we often turn to humane euthanasia. Most animal euthanasia procedures use medications given to an animal in order to help them die peacefully. The word euthanasia comes from the Greek word euthanatos which means “good death.” A good or easy death is one that minimizes distress or suffering, and mimics dying during sleep. Euthanasia of a pet can provide prevention of a long dying process and minimize painful or uncomfortable symptoms at the end of disease.
The euthanasia appointment may look different depending on the veterinarian. The first step of our euthanasia process involves administration of pain relief and sedation. Luckily, we have many more options to achieve a deep comfortable sleep than we used to. These medications are usually given as a subcutaneous (under the skin) or intramuscular (in the muscle)
Erica Sandberg, DVM, CHPV, CPEV Head of Houston Hospice Services BluePearl Pet Hospice
injection. Once given, these medicines help relax the pet over a period of minutes. If pets are anxious or overly painful, some will need oral medication to help them relax first prior to the injection. Once your pet is completely sedated, then a separate medication is administered, commonly intravenously (in a vein). This allows your pet to pass peacefully without any awareness, distress or pain. Talking to your veterinarian about your pet’s disease and any painful areas of their body will help with minimizing fear, anxiety and stress for you and your pet. Asking questions about the process can help your veterinarian individualize the medication dosages and administration.
BENEFITS OF IN-HOME EUTHANASIA:
In-home euthanasia is beneficial for the pet, the pet’s housemates and the human family. Most ill or elderly pets have fear, anxiety and stress when they are outside of their home environment. Large dogs may have difficulty with stairs or maneuvering in and out of the car. Cats may have severe anxiety when placed in a carrier for travel to a clinic setting. Often the end stages of disease already cause pets stress, which can be alleviated by the veterinarian coming to the home. The sedation can take place in the pet’s bed, on the patio, under their favorite tree or on their owner’s armchair. The other animals
in the home will benefit from being present during the euthanasia or having the opportunity to smell the pet after death. Each pet in the house will react differently – some will be clingy, nervous, or anxious because they can tell their owners are upset. This is a sensitive time and being at home can allow the family the space to grieve more openly. The family may want time after the pet’s death to grieve or have ceremonies before burial or cremation. Euthanasia at home looks different for every family. Some families want the process to move slower, some need reassurance about their decision, and some need there to be as little conversation as possible. Everyone is different. And everyone also grieves differently.
LOSS AND GRIEF AFTER EUTHANASIA:
It can be hard to imagine a world without your loving, loyal companion. You have gone through so many ups and downs with them by your side. It is normal to have “anticipatory grief” when you know that your pet may die soon. “Anticipatory grief” is the grief that can occur prior to a loved one’s expected death. It is also normal to grieve deeply after your pet passes away. Having a support system that is understanding of this loss can be especially important. If you would like resources regarding pet loss support, please see our website at: BluePearlVet.com/pet-loss-grief-support.
Holiday Season Stress
Tips For Training Your Dog
The holiday season can be a joyous time for families and pets alike, but it can also be a source of stress. If you plan to include your dog in the festivities this year, start training these skills to help everyone enjoy the season!
DESENSITIZING TO HOLIDAY STIMULI
Decorations: The sights and sounds of the holiday season can be overwhelming for some dogs. Start by introducing your dog to decorations gradually. Begin with one or two items, like ornaments or a small tree, and allow your dog to explore them at their own pace. Reward your dog with treats and praise for calm behavior around the decorations. If your dog shows signs of fear or anxiety, take a step back and allow them to acclimate more slowly. Reward them for staying calm when they’re near the decorations, reinforcing positive associations.
Music: Holiday music can be cheerful for us, but it can be jarring for dogs. Play soft holiday music at a low volume to
Katie Clark, Director of Training Peace Love Dogs
introduce it to your pup. Gradually increase the volume while rewarding your dog for remaining calm. If they show signs of distress, decrease the volume and work back up more slowly.
Groups of People: The influx of guests can be exciting yet overwhelming. Prepare your dog by gradually introducing them to larger groups. Start with one or two friends over, rewarding your dog for calm behavior. If your dog becomes anxious or unruly, create a safe space where they can take a break.
CRATE TRAINING FOR TRAVEL AND DOWNTIME
Crate training is essential for providing your dog with a secure space during travel or moments of chaos. If your dog isn’t already crate trained, start by making the crate a positive place. Use treats, toys, and praise to encourage your dog to enter the crate. Ensure it’s a cozy environment with a blanket or bed inside. When traveling, make sure the crate is secure in the vehicle, and provide familiar items to help your dog feel at ease.
During busy holiday gatherings, a crate can also serve as a retreat. Encourage your dog to use it as a safe space when they need a break from the excitement.
This will help reduce stress for both your dog and your guests.
TEACHING “PLACE” FOR RELAXATION
One of the most effective skills to teach your dog during the holidays is the “place” command. This command instructs your dog to go to a designated spot, such as a mat or bed, where they can relax. Begin training in a quiet environment, guiding your dog to the spot and rewarding them for staying there. Gradually introduce distractions, rewarding them for remaining in their place. This skill can help prevent begging at the table and allow your dog to relax amidst the excitement.
POLITE SITTING FOR ATTENTION
Finally, teaching your dog to sit politely for attention is crucial during the holidays. Start by asking your dog to sit when they approach you or when guests arrive. Reward them for sitting calmly instead of jumping or begging. Consistency is key; reinforce this behavior during every interaction to establish a calm, polite greeting. With training, you can create a stressfree environment for your dog and curate a positive holiday experience for everyone!
Conservation Corner
Spot One of the Rarest Big Cats in the World Houston Zoo Welcomes Female Amur Leopard
By: Rachael Shappard HoustonZoo.org
As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the Amur Leopard. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
When we think of endangered species, we often imagine distant jungles or remote mountain ranges. But sometimes, conservation heroes live much closer—right in our own communities. Lisa, a striking Amur leopard, is one such example.
Lisa’s journey to Houston is as remarkable as the rarity of her species. Born on Oct. 8, 2010, at the Saint Louis Zoo, she spent a decade at Brookfield Zoo Chicago before moving to her new home in Texas. Originally named Anastasia, she earned the affectionate nickname "Lisa" as a playful tribute to her mother, Mona—together they were endearingly called "Mona Lisa."
However, Lisa's story is not just about her travels. She plays a vital role in the survival of
her species. With fewer than 100 Amur leopards remaining in the wild, Lisa serves as a living ambassador for one of the world's most endangered big cats. Her piercing gaze and graceful movements captivate visitors, but it’s the story she embodies that leaves a lasting impact.
Each time a visitor sees Lisa, they’re witnessing a wonder of nature. Amur leopards are astonishing animals, adapted to thrive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Lisa helps us share their story and inspire people to take action to protect them.
Lisa’s habitat at Houston Zoo reflects the dedication of her caretakers. Nestled next to the cougar exhibit, her home includes ample rockwork where visitors can often find her lounging in the cool morning hours.
Lisa has quickly become a favorite among the staff. Her confident, curious, and slightly sassy personality shines through in everything she does. And she has quite the appetite, especially when it comes to chunk meat and rabbit.
Lisa's presence extends far beyond the Zoo, drawing attention to the urgent conservation efforts needed to protect Amur leopards in their natural habitats in eastern Russia and northern China. The Houston Zoo embraces this responsibility, implementing eco-friendly practices that contribute to habitat preservation.
Every digital ticket, every piece of recycled paper, is a small step toward protecting the forests that Amur leopards depend on. Lisa isn’t just an animal we care for—she’s a partner in our mission to safeguard her wild relatives.

"One cannot watch chimpanzee infants for long without realizing they have the same emotional need for affection and reassurance as human children."
~Dr. Jane Goodall - British ethologist known for her exceptionally detailed and long-term research on the chimpanzees.
Why I Love Animals is a monthly feature written by our Editor with the mission of educating the public on the value of all species.
PART 4: GOLDEN YEARS AT THE HOUSTON ZOO
Someone once said, “Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art,” and if ever that were so, it’s on display with some of the “seniors” at the Houston Zoo. Age is an interesting thing - it defines our time on earth and belies our amount of experience and wisdom in many cases. I recently learned that the oldest animal at the Houston Zoo is 92 years of age, which prompted me to create this 4-part series highlighting some of the animals at the zoo that are in their Golden Years, and yes, they are works of art! As senior citizens for their species, as well as great ambassadors, I wanted to learn more about them and share with you.
SAY Hi to Charlie a 52 yr. old Chimpanzee!
By: Michelle Mantor Photography by Prudence
WHY I LOVE ANIMALS
When I was a young girl, I would wish for “a chimp” on my Christmas list each year and it was either number one or two on the list, switching on occasion with “a ring”. Those were the two things I wanted most LOL! Weird combo I know, but I think the fascination with these primates originated with watching the Beverly Hillbillies and envying Elly May’s chimp, “cousin Bessie”, who seemed so human-like. I loved how she dressed cousin Bessie and how she held her hand, like a child. Of course, now I know that having a chimpanzee as a pet is dangerous, irresponsible and inhumane but as a kid, I thought it looked so fun!
Over the years, I have learned a lot more about these awesome creatures who are our closest cousins; we share about 98% of our genes. Although I’ve realized chimps are not pets, that hasn’t stopped me from being captivated by them and being excited to watch chimps at the zoo and help the public learn more
about them. In this final part of our 4-part series on senior animals in their Golden Years at the Houston Zoo, we are introducing Charlie, a 52 yr. old chimpanzee.
As a senior, Charlie gets a little extra attention to make sure he is healthy and feeling good. According to his primate keeper, Briana Bauer, Charlie receives monthly visits from a veterinary specialist who treats him with laser acupuncture and massage therapy through a special port which allows her to treat specific targeted areas while still safely protected. Charlie enjoys seeing Dr. Marziani show up and happily participates in the sessions. Between visits, his keepers also give him targeted massage for his neck and shoulders. He also receives daily medications to treat arthritis and associated pain.
In the photo of the two chimpanzees, Charlie is being groomed by Lulu. Grooming is a very important social interaction for chimpanzees. It is used to maintain status, build friendships, and
See the resemblance LOL? Lulu and I having some fun.
keep close bonds between the chimps. Like us, chimps are social and also care for their young for a long period of time. They live in a strict male-dominated hierarchy, where disputes are generally settled without the need for violence. They are also quite intelligent. Nearly all chimpanzee populations have been recorded using tools, modifying sticks, rocks, grass and leaves and using them for hunting and acquiring honey, termites, ants, nuts and water.
In their habitat in the forests of Central Africa, chimpanzees spend most of their days in the treetops. When they do come down, they usually travel on all fours (though they can walk on their legs like humans). It was once thought that only human beings could make tools, but primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall observed free-living chimpanzees in Africa using sticks to fish termites out of mounds. It was also discovered that their toolmaking is culturally influenced; chimpanzees in different parts of Africa make and use tools differently, showing it’s a learned behavior. Even more impressive, chimps have been observed creating their own toys and games as well as learning to use plants as medicine and recalling symbols. Chimpanzees display numerous signs of intelligence, including learning lan-
gressive and even infanticide or killing one another. While this is true in some cases, again, it’s much more complicated when you look into those situations independently. There are theories about their aggression ranging from issues with male-dominated, densely populated groups to males reducing the mating competition and more, but what I would say is that to really understand it, you need to read the massive research.
guage. They are also among species that have passed the mirror test, suggesting self-awareness. While travelling, chimpanzees keep in contact by beating their hands and feet against the trunks of large trees, an act that is known as "drumming". They also do this when encountering individuals from other communities.
Additional communication includes facial expressions, postures, and sounds. They have expressive faces that are important in closeup communications. When frightened, a "full closed grin" causes nearby individuals to be fearful as well. Playful chimpanzees display an open-mouthed grin. Chimpanzees may also express themselves with the "pout", which is made in distress, or the "sneer", which is made when threatening, and "compressed-lips face", which is a type of display. When submitting to a dominant individual, a chimpanzee crunches, bobs, and extends a hand, while aggression would be a bipedal "swagger".
The discussion of their intelligence, emotions, and social hierarchy is also fascinating (yet complicated). Chimps “ain’t your average animal” for sure! There is simply so much to cover when delving into these primates that it would take intense study to learn all about them. They do have a reputation for being ag-
Speaking of research, chimps have been studied probably more than most wild animals and have also been inhumanely used in research. Their likeness to humans, ability to learn, and so forth is likely a blessing and a curse but there is no doubt that they elicit our curiosity at a minimum!
As with most animals I write about, threats to their existence is a terribly sad reality. The main threats to chimpanzees are habitat loss, disease, and hunting, especially for bushmeat. These are exacerbated by chimps' slow reproductive rate—if an adult is killed, it takes 14-15 years to replace him or her as a breeding individual.
Chimpanzees have already disappeared from 4 African countries, and are nearing extinction in many others. Deforestation and commercial hunting for bushmeat are taking a terrible toll on most populations. The chimpanzee is listed on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species. Between 170,000 and 300,000 individuals are estimated across its range.
I could go on and on discussing anything to do with chimps! They are still top of my list, although not to own, but to learn about and preserve! If you want to learn more and see the troop at the Houston Zoo, November is a great month to visit.

How did you get started in real estate?
It all started in 2016 with a passion to begin growing my personal real estate investment portfolio. As a Native Houstonian and selfproclaimed market analytics junkie, friends started asking me to help them buy and sell their home, or investment properties. I took a leap of faith in 2020 to leave my 9-5 job to pursue a full time real estate career, and I never looked back!
What do you enjoy about selling real estate? When it comes to real estate, Houston is made up of many sub markets. Demand and pricing trends in The Heights or River Oaks are not necessarily the same as Spring or Cypress. Our mission is to advise our clients with the most accurate market data that we have analyzed and simplified to help them make the most educated decision. As cliche as it sounds, I enjoy being our clients’ personal “market data nerd” as well as walking side by side through the buy/sell process to keep it as enjoyable as possible. Seeing a family enjoy their new home, along with their furry family members, makes it 100% worth it!
What is your specialty or what sets you apart from others?
Although we help clients in many of Houston’s central pockets and suburbs, I have an affinity for the Inner Loop pockets that I have lived in or grew up in including: The Greater Heights, Oak Forest/Garden Oaks, and the neighborhoods that surround the Texas Medical Center such as Braeswood, Bellaire and West University.
Tell us about your pets.
The kids! We are currently a 3 dog household. 2 corgi’s, Teddy and Corbin, ages 4 and 7, and the most adorable 50ish lb terrier rescue, Riley age 12.
How do you incorporate pets into your business model?
As a lifelong pet lover and former veterinary practice manager in my past life, I’m fortunate that many of my real estate clients come from the vet world…or are pretty die hard animal lovers in some fashion! So, rarely am I without a dog or cat (or even something exotic) nearby. Like attracts like!
Tell us about your service and what you offer prospective clients.
All of our clients are personally served by a Native Houstonian with experience helping over 150 families buy and sell properties. Because of our experience and network in both Houston’s close-in neighborhoods as well as the suburbs, we find that we are regularly called on by families moving to Houston, or those that live here and are trying to figure out what neighborhood matches their lifestyle. The neighborhood is just as important as the home! Lastly, Compass, our partner real estate brokerage, is a leader in the technology and marketing space, which is why we joined them in 2021. This partnership allows us to collaborate with other top agents both locally and nationally to share best practices, and serve our clients at the highest level.
What is the outlook for the Houston Market in the coming months/year?
Historically, home prices have gone up after seven of the last eight elections. Combined with the recent drop in interest rates driving more buyers (demand) into the market, we expect to see an increase in buyer activity, ultimately resulting in increasing home prices as we close out 2024 and head into 2025. Houston has a lot of pent up demand from buyers sitting on the sidelines the last couple of years, and we are already starting to see buyers coming out to take advantage of lower rates. As this continues, We anticipate that some of our most desirable areas that have limited inventory such as pockets of The Heights, Memorial and Spring Branch will start regularly seeing multiple offers, very soon.
When is a good time to start planning if someone wants to buy a home?
We recommend consulting with a Realtor 6-12 months from when you’re planning to move. This gives adequate time to narrow down target areas, to start getting a pulse on those markets, and getting all your ducks in a row to make an offer when the right home comes along. However, it’s really never too early to start the home buying journey. The earlier you start, the better prepared you will be when the time comes.
