he way I look at things is this: If you are going to LIVE on this earth, you might as well LIVE with joy, gratitude, wonder, goal-setting and a zest for learning and exploring. Unfortunately, I know too many people that are just trying to "get through" life and that seems both sad and a waste of a good time! And, of those people that I know with a lackluster attitude who don't seem curious to learn or change anything about their life, they also don't seem to be goal-setters, hence they don't accomplish many goals. If you read my editor's note in the December issue, you know that I recently brought two rescue horses to my home as well as two llamas. I also faced my 7th shoulder surgery during this "settling in time" with the animals, which also happened to be just before Christmas. You can imagine my friends and family's reaction to my Over-Loading. "Why did you do all of these things at once?" My only answer is because it's been my goal, i'm not getting any younger, and I feel an urgency to LIVE the life I want to live. The inevitable next question from nearly EVERYONE is "Why did you want llamas?" This answer is not so clear LOL! The llamas were also a goal, or desire might be a better word, to have a species that is out of the ordinary. I'm intrigued by animal behavior and I think llamas are a magical, mystical species that I want to challenge myself to learn about and develop a relationship with. So far, the llamas have been with me for almost three weeks and I am, as I imagined, fascinated by them. I will definitely write more about the

camelids in the future! So, as I was taking a walk on my property, the funny idea of having tea with a llama popped in my head as I was thinking about how they are unusual and how many other "out of the box" things animal lovers could seek out in 2022. I mean, why not just go out there and LIVE and tease your brain, excite your senses, learn new things...it beats sitting at home and allowing boredom, depression or fear to take over. In the feature story, we offer ideas that will hopefully be thought-provoking and fun to explore in our great city and surrounding areas. I would l ike to thank my daughter Kaia, my llama "Painted Warrior", photographer Prudence Allwein, and assitants, Mark Silberman and Nathan Villemain, for making my whacky idea of Tea With A Llama come to fruition in our feature story opener, page 27. And, I hope my willingness to do silly things will inspire you to enjoy all that animals have to give as well! As a reminder, this issue is our annual double issue for January and February, then we publish monthly for the remainder of the year. t the start of the New Year, most of the population is thinking about losing weight and exercising more, unless you are one of those lucky ones that can eat ice cream and chocolate everyday and not gain a pound because you are “blessed with a high metabolism”. (For the record, the rest of us hate you). Given that I fall into the category of “most of the population”, I headed to the tennis club to start my 2022 body reconstruction. I felt pretty good about myself. I was wearing my vintage Chrissie Evert dress with the little tennis racquet appliqué and matching appliqué on the shoes. So clever. Anyway, I was sure everyone was coveting my 1970’s vibe as I trotted onto the court to face my nemesis, Penelope. To put things into perspective, Penelope grew up playing tennis at “the country club” where she received lessons every summer on meticulously kept rubico courts from a previously good-looking tennis pro named Gunther. Thirty years ago he was in the top 50 and was a bronzed tennis God which has resulted in his current resemblance to a Sharpei. But even so, he taught Penelope tennis strokes that were as flawless as her self-image. Me, on the other hand, grew up playing at the community center where the court tripled as a volleyball and basketball court. I’m pretty sure my racquet was previously hanging on the wall of Bennigan’s. The net was made of chain-link fence and if you wanted to play a game, the net was taken up and down for each sport. Needless to say it was a train wreck. Half the time we just decided to play with no net. Turns out that decision was not good for the advancement of my game. But, for what I lacked in expensive equipment and top-notch instruction, I made up for with what some might call exuberance. I prefer to think of it as “my sparkle”. Essentially, my tactic is to race around the court whacking the ball with as much strength as I can muster, sometimes switching hands if necessary, while making exotic sounds that even top-grunting professional player Victoria Azarenka would envy. I leap, bound, bob, and bolt around the court to the awe (or some would say horror) of my opponent. It typically works like a charm. The opposing player is so mesmerized by my athleticism that frankly, they forget to swing. Penelope had heard through the tennis

On Causing A Racquet...

grapevine that my game was “incredible”, so she challenged me to an 8 game singles pro set. In my former years, I was only playing ladies doubles league but I had become cynical to the world of Atilla the Hun team captains who scoured the tennis shops for the worst possible team outfits that looked good on HER but made the rest of us look like 10 pounds of sausage

squeezed into a 3 pound casing. And oh, don’t get me started on the Mike Tyson school of sportsmanship that essentially says, “when in doubt, call it out”. Or, my favorite is when you finally gel

with your doubles partner after a grueling season of near losses (because she was “off” her game most of the time), all to find she has dropped you like a hot potato for Sally. Is it because Sally has a wicked slice serve? Or because she has a killer volley? No, it’s because she has a 6 bedroom beachfront home in Galveston which she is willing to invite said partner to. So, although I sadly had to leave behind the post league match banquet-level spread of fancy finger foods and the best chocolate chip cookies one

could imagine, alas, I left the doubles world to brave that little yellow ball all by myself. Besides, I figured, I needed more space than just half the court to achieve my full potential. So hear I was, facing miss fancy pants with her 6 racquet Adidas bag, a jug full of electrolyte replacing fluids and ol’ Gunther standing by to give her unauthorized hand signals. I, however, was feeling extra confident as I channeled Chrissie with my Bennigan’s racquet. I couldn’t wait to get to the Salty Dog to brag about my “put away” of Penelope. What happened next was, shall we say, most inconvenient. I was bouncing back and forth, warming up my muscles buried deep below my outer “sparkle” when Penelope opened the fresh can of balls and trickled them onto the court. I was bouncing on the “up” and, as if in Chariots of Fire slow motion, I saw the yellow orb heading strategically under my beautifully appliquéd tennis shoe, landing perfectly beneath my arch. As my big girl sized body came down upon the ball, the net of it all is that I felt something snap and my sparkle was now a sprain. Penelope, whose empathy gene rivals Joseph Stalin, snaps, “Henrietta, are you seriously going to feign injury before we even get started?” To which I reply, “Penelope, kiss my Ace."

Since 2015, Emancipet has served Houston area pet owners who otherwise might not be able to afford or access veterinary care for their pets. The demand for their high quality, low-cost services has grown over the years, leading the group to open a second clinic in 2020, and actively pursuing opportunities to open a third location. our low-cost, compassionate services to an entirely new group of lower income pet owners,” said Angelita Sampaio, Vice President of Emancipet Houston. ttention cat aficionados and kitty lovers! The Houston Cat Club Charity Cat Show returns January 8-9 to a new venue – the Hilton Houston North. The show will feature 225 purebred cats and kittens from around the country plus beautiful household pets competing for awards given by ten expert judges from the Cat Fanciers’ Association, the world’s largest registry. Some of the felines at the Houston show are there just to be adored…and petted. These special Pet-Me cats are always a hit with the visitors. The household pets are also popular and are judged on health and beauty. The purebred cats are judged on a written standard of confor-

mation for their breed. Up to forty two breeds may be represented at the show. In addition to the judging there will be cat costume contests both days, Meet the Breeds both days, and a Meow Mall full of the best variety of toys, treats, and gifts for cats and those who love them available anywhere. The Houston Cat Club Charity Cat Show is a 501(c)3 all-volunteer organization that supports animal welfare groups in Houston and surrounding areas. In addition, animal shelters receive free space at the show to present their beautiful cats for adoption. The Houston Cat Club has donated almost a million dollars over its 68 shows. All of the donations come from visitor admission fees. ave you ever heard the expression, The Time Is Now? When I was younger, I thought that was a strange saying, which I suppose means I just didn’t “get it”. “Of course the time is now, what else would it be?”, I thought. Fast forward to the “sunset” of my life and I TOTALLY get it. We don’t live forever, nor do we know when our final day on earth will be, so if there is something you long to do or want to accomplish, don’t put it off until it’s too late because…The Time Is Now! If you read my essay in the December issue, you know that I just moved to acreage, rescued a horse and got two young llamas... nearly all at once! My friends and family

(and even myself at times) wondered why I made so many big decisions in a short time frame, essentially piling on more “to-do’s”, responsibility, and stress than I could hardly handle. My answer is that I feel a sense of urgency to live my dreams, accomplish my goals and not wait until the time has passed and opportunities are gone. I did that once in my life. I wanted to go back to school to become an ethologist but once I had children, bills to pay, years had gone by, it felt “too late”. That was a lesson learned so now in my latter years, I realize time is passing quickly and if I don’t strive for the life I want to live, I may not have enough time to make it happen. As I reflected on why I have shoved about

pop-culture. If you could have tea with a llama, would you? Some people would love the idea, others would find it crazy, and yet some would not be interested at all. Fair enough. But the intention here is to offer thought-provoking ideas about making 2022 a LLAMAZING year.

four years of living into one, I accepted that it is because I am realizing the meaning of The Time Is Now and that philosophy is the inspiration behind this feature story. If there is something you have always wanted to do or experience, make 2022 the year that you get started. You may not accomplish the entire goal but getting off the starting block is key to moving forward. With the idea of exploring new things to try, supporting a cause you are passionate about or even bringing a new species into the family, I hope this feature helps you think bigger, bolder and motivates you to not let time take away your desires!

Although having tea with a llama is probably not an option (unless you come visit me), the idea of looking for unique ways to enjoy animals, help animals, or make the world better through the benefits of animals is, IMHO, a worthwhile opportunity to search for! Houston PetTalk Magazine

Houston is home to a plethora of animal welfare organizations, nearly all of which rely on volunteers in order to reach the goals of their life-saving mission. If you have ever thought about using your love of animals to help give back to the community, volunteering your time is something you can do in 2022 to really make a difference as well as make your heart happy. Most organizations are in need of volunteers to do a myriad of activities including dog walking, kennel/cage cleaning, socializing, administration, event production, transportation and more. There is literally something to do for anyone of any skill set! Houston’s largest shelters, Houston SPCA (HoustonSPCA.org) and Houston Humane Society (HoustonHumane.org) both have volunteer programs and training. Opportunities are also available in many foster-based rescue programs, animal welfare education organizations, wildlife organizations and more. Did you know that your cell phone is contributing to loss of habitat for gorillas and is one of the reasons they are on the endangered species list? You can help save mountain gorillas by recycling your old cell phones. Coltan, a mineral used in our handheld electronics, is often destructively mined in Central Africa which is not only home to mountain gorillas, but other endangered species as well. The Houston Zoo created a campaign of awareness a few years back and if you are wondering where to recycle your phone(s), the zoo has a recycling drop box so that you can easily do the right thing and visit the many amazing species at the zoo too!

Make Your Kitty Purr With Joy GROW YOUR OWN CATNIP

Not only does growing your own catnip, (scientifically known as Nepeta cataria which is a member of the mint family), save you money, it aids the planet through growing in your yard rather than being purchased which utilizes packaging, shipping, etc. It’s said that 75% of cats react to catnip and the ensuing euphoric reaction can be quite entertaining to watch. Did you know that catnip is also a great tea for

you to drink as well? Combined with chamomile and a little mint or lemon balm, catnip tea promotes relaxation and may make it easier to sleep or manage stress. Plant catnip in the spring after the threat of frost has passed in your area. Start catnip seeds indoors around six weeks prior to your projected last frost date. The plant enjoys sunlight and well-drained soil so keep that in mind when selecting your location (in the garden on indoor container). Keep the soil of seedlings lightly moist but not soggy. Mix some compost

into the soil at the time of planting to give your catnip a boost. Catnip is a self-pollinating plant. It will attract bees and other pollinators to the garden. Harvest catnip when it’s in bloom You may harvest an entire plant or just cut some stems. These can be hung upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated area until they are dry. Then the leaves and flowers can be stripped from the stem and stored in a sealed container or sewn into handmade cat toys. Voila - happiness for you and kitty!

Stimulating cats that spend all day indoors can sometimes be a challenge. Unfortunately, too many cat owners also head out on vacation and leave the kitty home with only a neighbor stopping by once per day for a feeding (and sometimes not even once per day!). Although cats appear independent, most benefit from a stimulating environment rather than staying home in a dark, quiet house. But where should your kitty go for a vacation or fun day? Try A New Outdoor Adventure SOAK UP THE SUN AND SURF IN GALVESTON

If you have all day or even a few days to enjoy coastal canine fun, head to Galveston Island where dogs are welcome and there is plenty to do. From walks on the beach, to chilling on the deck or even visiting the local dog park (Lindale Park at 400 Marine Drive), the island is a no-brainer for a pet-centric vacation or day trip. THE HOUSTON ZOO TURNS 100 IN 2022… PREPARE FOR AMAZING EXPERIENCES!

In 2022, the Houston Zoo celebrates their 100th anniversary by completing the most dramatic transformation in their history. The Centennial Celebration will be a year-long commemoration filled with events, collaborations and community involvement. The Zoo has come a long way since 1922, when the animals consisted of a lone bison named Earl and depended on the community’s donations for animals. Today, the Zoo is a world-class 55-acre accredited facility and home to more than 6,000 animals from 900 species. The Centennial Celebration will stay true to its mission of connecting communities with animals and inspiring action to save wildlife. The Zoo is creating a series of transformative exhibits, new amenities, and enhanced public spaces. The first major exhibit of its kind to showcase the remarkable wildlife of the legendary island chain, the Houston Zoo’s Galápagos Islands will immerse guests in an environment evoking the archipelago’s unique landscapes and oceanic habitats. No place on our planet better exemplifies the wonders of unique species, the balance of ecosystems, or the need for conservation action than the Galápagos.

Penguins Are Coming! When the Galápagos Islands exhibit opens during the centennial year, it will include a state-of-the-art habitat for Humboldt penguins. With sea lions, giant tortoises, sharks, and more, Humboldt penguins are a great fit for Houston, since they originate from Chile and Peru in South America where it can get as warm as 100 degrees. However, they will not have to battle the Houston heat since they will have a climate-controlled environment

where they will be comfortable at a consistent temperature and will be protected against Houston’s mosquitos which can potentially transmit avian malaria to penguins. The Humboldt penguins that will move to Houston will be a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP). The SSP program oversees the population of select species within AZA member organizations and to enhance conservation of this species in the wild.

One of the biggest reasons pets don’t get proper oral care is the fear from their owners of putting them under anesthesia. This is so the pet doesn’t have to return for a second visit. Addition-

ally, it allows us to do the necessary work. A cleaning, for example, that isn’t done under anesthesia is, in fact, just a superficial cleaning – doesn’t allow us to clean under the gums (where most of the disease lies), remove tartar buildup, probe for pockets, take x-rays, etc. So, it’s only a partial job. Importantly, The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) does not support anesthesia-free dentistry procedures because of the many risks it carries to the patient. This is why VDS has a board-certified anesthesiologist as part of the team. A common misunderstanding by many pet parents is that if their pet has a particular health condition or is geriatric, they cannot withstand anesthesia. Generally, health issues aren’t something that precludes a patient from receiving anesthesia, and age is certainly not a disease. It just means that the veterinary specialists have the opportunity to create a personalized plan to provide the very best outcome. Did Christmas Bring A New Furry Friend To Your Family? Tips On Caring For Your New Pet

f Christmas brought a new furry family member into the home, you are definitely having a fun time, but you may also have some questions. Here are a few tips on the most common areas of new pet ownership. 1. All incoming animals will need to be fully vaccinated, no matter the age. Young animals get a series of vaccines and then a one year booster. Please follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for vaccines. It just might save your pet’s life. And as much as you might want to take your new puppy on a walk or to the dog park, do not take puppies anywhere until they are fully vaccinated, except your veterinarian’s office. 2. New pets should be slowly introduced to any current pets, whether they be cats, dogs or a happy mix of both. There should be no unsupervised play time until they are all comfortable with each other. Never let a new pet loose to explore when you first bring them home if you have other pets. 3. Dogs and puppies: One of the biggest training priorities will be house training and teaching your new pooch to let you know when they need to go outside and tend to their potty business. Crate training is an excellent way to help with this training task. Lots of people use potty bells at the door and teach their dogs to ring the bells when they need to go out. Find what works for you and your home, but do not allow “accidents” to

become a part of your dog’s routine – the longer this goes on, the harder it will be to break. Dogs love their crates. Make the crate comfortable and safe for them. Feed new puppies/dogs in their crates (supervised).

Teach your new canine friend basic commands like sit, stay, come. From day one, discourage jumping on you and nipping/biting…and chewing the furniture! Find what works for you and your puppy but yelling is not the answer. Positive reinforcement goes a long way towards raising a happy and confident dog. For positive reinforcement, use treats that are safe for your pup to eat and please, no rawhides and no bones/toys that can become choking hazards or get stuck in their mouths. To quote the commercial, “We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two.” Once vaccinated, begin leash training your puppy for walks, let them socialize with other people and their pets. 4. Cats and kittens: Allow new cats and kittens to first decompress in a small area of your home, sniff the new smells, meet new animal friends under the door. Make sure they have a size appropriate litter box (and being in a smaller room will make litter box training easier), safe litter for their age, food and water, toys and a snuggly bed. Play time is so important for cats of all ages and is a great way to bond with them. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2022, and remember, we are always here for you and your pets if you need us.

Liver & Gall Bladder Disease In Senior Pets Diagnosis & Treatment Options

xperienced hospice and palliative care veterinarians typically manage thousands of patients with diseases affecting the liver, gall bladder, bile duct system, and consequently the pancreas and intestinal tract. Many of these diseases are chronic in nature with acute inflammation and infection causing symptoms that lead to veterinary visits, whether in the home or in a clinic setting. Specific diseases of the liver and gall bladder commonly seen in older pets by veterinarians in practice include hepatitis, cholangiohepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer, hepatic lipidosis, copper storage disease, gall bladder mucocele, and vascular disease. Symptoms related to the dysfunction of the liver and bile duct include (but are not limited to) pain, lethargy, weakness, dehydration, weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, abdominal distention, jaundice, diarrhea, fever, increased thirst or urination, neurological signs (including seizures), and dark yellow-orange urine. Symptom management can be challenging at times, as many symptoms are non-specific and can be caused by other disease

processes. Most pets will show signs of clinical disease when more than 80% of the liver has been affected. However, some cats and dogs with liver disease will not show any clinical signs. Diagnostic tests performed on a blood or urine sample may reveal elevated liver enzymes elevated bilirubin, low protein levels, electrolyte imbalances, white and red blood cell count abnormalities, and prolonged blood clotting times (bleeding disorders). In addition, imaging studies may show evidence of liver enlargement, liver atrophy, cancer, gall bladder/bile duct thickening, pancreatitis, and bile stasis. Medications used in the treatment of liver and gall bladder disorders may include some or all of the following: » Pain medications for liver and bile duct discomfort, sometimes involving the pancreas » Steroids to reduce inflammation or to treat immune-mediated diseases » Anti-nausea medications for vomiting, drooling, and inappetence » Antibiotics for primary and secondary infections » Gastroprotectants (acid reducers) to prevent/treat intestinal ulceration Supportive therapies used by veterinarians treating a patient with liver disease: » Antioxidants – to help scavenge inflammation-induced free-radicals

Therapies are directed at the palliative management of clinical symptoms and/or based upon suspicion of disease presence. Much can be done to provide comfort and quality of life to pets with liver and gall bladder disease during the hospice relationship, even when a definitive diagnosis cannot be reached. Humane euthanasia should be considered for pets when care to maintain quality of life is either no longer effective or financially feasible. Learning Labels: The Right Food For Your Pet What's Really In The Bag?

e have all been in this situation: You're standing in your local pet food store overwhelmed by all the options of dog food. Big bags, little bags, and some you have seen on TV. No doubt you want what is best for your pet companion, but how do you narrow down the search? There are a few key things that can help you find the best food formula for your furry friend. First, let’s discuss the types of foods available on the market. Sure, there is wet food and dry food. However, over the last few years, many new categories of foods have entered the market. We are familiar with commercial diets and veterinary prescription diets, but now we also need to sift through diets that are Limited Ingredients, Premium Diets, or Holistic. Some pet food companies do a very good job of marketing and making sure you see their product on TV or in magazines. They do this so that when you go to the store, their packaging is familiar to you and you are more likely to purchase that product.

Unfortunately, when you examine the ingredients of these products they are not as pure or balanced as portrayed. The first step of being able to compare is to look at the food label and its ingredients. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is an organization that sets the standards, regulations, policies, and definitions for pet food. These policies have helped develop profiles of ideal nutrition for dogs and puppies. In 2016 the AAFCO put new pet food label changes into effect. They required all companies to include guaranteed analysis (quantity of protein, fat, fiber, and moisture) in descending order by weight, nutritional adequacy, and feeding instructions including a statement on caloric content. Knowing this, looking for a food company that exceeds AAFCO guidelines is a great start. Be sure to select the right life stage for your pet. It is recommended puppies and kittens eat puppy or kitten formula until 1 year of age. When looking at the pet food label we would like to see meatbased items listed as the first two or three ingredients, along with some grains. GrainFree diets have been linked to causing Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) leading to

heart failure. Other important ingredients to look for are Taurine (an essential amino acid) and Omega Fatty Acids (fish oils). All these items will contribute to a balanced diet for your pet. Once you have narrowed your search you may choose what is most delicious to your pet! If you know they love chicken give the chicken formula a try. A good idea is to buy a small bag first to ensure it is a hit at home before buying a big bag. If you are switching diets, be sure to make the transition slowly as to not cause gastric upset. This can be achieved by adding the new food in at each meal. Over a week you will add more new food and less of the old until they are fully transitioned. It is important to note that every pet has unique nutritional needs. A diet that may be great for one dog may cause issues in another. Asking your veterinarian for food recommendations is always encouraged. This is especially true if your pet has any medical conditions that may require a medically supervised diet. Hooved Heroes Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol

s Houstonians, we can’t deny that little feeling of pride that wells up within us when our city stands out for some endeavor or our team wins a championship. Let’s face it... we enjoy bragging rights like any other patriotic, proud member of a unique U.S. city. In Houston, we can be proud of many things including our World Championship Astros, our Oil & Gas industry that powers the world, our exploration and accomplishments in space, our worldclass cuisine, our vibrant art and museum scene and the heroic spirit we displayed to the nation during Hurricane Harvey. But there is one important element of our city that we should be duly proud of as well that may surprise you–our Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol, which is part of Strategic Operations, Homeland Security Command and Special Operations Division. Policing a city atop a massive sized animal is by no means easy but when you learn more about Mounted Patrol’s duties and accomplishments, you’ll understand why they are to be admired. "For example", shared Officer Horace Mann Jr. during our interview, "did you know that one Mounted Patrol officer equals 8 or more officers on foot?" I was totally impressed by this statistic because it embodies why the department is both valuable and unique in its capabilities. Officers and their horses can go into areas that a car or motorcycle cannot. Plus, they sit up high giving them a better vantage point and, of course, horses are faster than man! Officer Horace Mann Jr. impressive, but the feat of riding a horse in such rigorous conditions can be quite precarious and deserves our full respect. If you’ve ever ridden a horse or even attempted to ride, you know how difficult it is to get a 1500 lb. animal to maneuver where and how you want them to. Take that one step further and imagine trying to handle your stead in a crowd of people on a downtown street with traffic and various ground surfaces. Not easy! But Mounted Patrol has to take this scenario a step further yet again. As police officers, they do the same tasks as any other officer including traffic stops, searches, arrests and handcuffing…all from atop their horse! They can't just jump down, complete the task and hop back on their horse, lest they lose their leverage with the situation. Try staying on your horse when a “bad guy” is trying to pull you off. Now, that’s impressive! It's also important to consider the horses themselves. Barefoot and brave, these hooved heroes work 6 (or more) hour shifts to protect our citizens in ways that we might fail to appreciate. Along

with their mounted officers, they deal with traffic, people coming at them from all directions, loud noises, tight spaces…all the things equines are innately fearful of. Yet, with the guidance of their human officer, they put fear aside and put their trust in the relationship so that they can face untold danger for the purpose of keeping our community safe and peaceful. You don’t have to dig very deep into the Mounted Patrol department to learn that the accomplishments of this group of officers and horses is remarkable. One aspect of their operations that surprised me is the fact that Houston’s Mounted Patrol does not cost the taxpayers money. Now, that’s also impressive! It’s virtually unheard of for a government agency to be cost-free to taxpayers. The department accomplishes this feat in several ways. First, the horses are donated by citizens. To be considered for the team, a horse must be even-tempered, healthy, trainable and exposed to various situations. The mares and geldings that are brought into the program go through a 90-day trial period before being accepted. The

second way the department covers its cost is through sponsorship of the horses. The cost to sponsor one horse per year is $5000 and there are plenty of big names, both private citizens and corporations, that step up annually to support HPD Mounted Patrol including the Houston Astros, the Houston Texans, Oil & Gas companies as well as Houston City Council Members who appropriate some of their budget dollars to the department. The cost of each horse for a year includes food, grooming, veterinary care, equipment, training and other incidentals. According to Officer Brett Boudreaux, "All of the officers are hands-on when it comes to running the stables and the overall program. We help out with grounds keeping, fence mending, grooming and even farrier work." With 36 large equines, there is a lot of work to do and the officers make sure it all gets done. They have pride in their work and it shows when visiting the facility in NE Houston. Much has been made about the department’s philosophies regarding horse care over the years. At points in the past, the department followed what you might call a “calvary” style program with elements associated with military when it comes to training and horse management. One aspect of this program was shoed horses. Over time, the department came to the realization that barefoot horses would be much safer for all. Given that the Mounted Patrol often works downtown, there are just too many slippery surfaces that caused the horses to lose their footing when wearing steel shoes. Going barefoot has been a big success and the foot health and safety of the horses is better for it. As pendulums often swing one way

then another, only to land in the middle, that’s the track the department’s philosophy of horse management has followed as well. From a calvary style approach, which uses shoes and a bit, the department then moved toward a Parelli philosophy which is more of a natural horsemanship approach, going barefoot and bitless. As time marched on, the department found that there are elements of each style that work and they have settled on a blended version to meet their needs, including the use of soft bits for subtle stoppage and emergencies. In witnessing the horses during our interview, they were clearly well cared for, healthy, beautifully groomed and most definitely loved and respected like a trusted friend to all of the officers in the department. What is most important to glean from the work our Mounted Patrol division does to keep us safe is that both the officers and the horses risk their lives for our benefit. They train rigorously in heat, rain, cold or any other crazy weather event Houston might endure, plus the officers work hard on the ground to manage these magnificent animals. The training of the horses is an achievement in itself. Essentially, this extremely large animal is put in the most unnatural of circumstances and asked to do so based on trust of their officer. Horses are prey animals and as such, there is thousands of years of instinct telling them to always be on the highest of alert and when necessary, flee or fight. And believe me that’s a decision they make very quickly, so if they are startled, scared, see a strange object, hear a loud noise or anything out of sorts, they react. The horses on the police force essentially have to do the opposite–they are taught to stay calm in these situations

During out interview, the officers shared stories about the public and their love of the horses. From adults to children, most everyone wants to check them out, pet them and learn more. The department welcomes the attention, but they also want citizens to be mindful of safety. For example, they've had small children come and stand under their horse (which shows how large they are) without them knowing or being able to see underneath their horse. Another officer had to warn them not to move and of course they had to rely on the horse not to react. It's these type of situations that, although they do their utmost to handle, can be very dangerous. The message: it's ok to approach and ask to pet the horses, but don't allow children behind or under the horse please! There is much to be respected about Houston’s Mounted Patrol, from the skill of the officers to their dedication and even their notable attainment of running the department on donations and sponsorships. But the real feat in my mind is the accomplishment of training and gaining the trust of a 1500 lb. animal whom they ask to do the opposite of their instinctual DNA. Conservation Corner Houston Zoo’s 2021 Conservation Successes

he Houston Zoo’s mission is to connect communities with animals, inspiring action to save wildlife. Every day, staff, volunteers, and guests of the Houston Zoo are striving to make a difference for animals in the wild and inspiring others to take simple actions to save wildlife. The Zoo animals that guests come to see serve as ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild.

Every time you visit the zoo, a portion of your admission goes straight to conservation efforts. Zoo veterinarians cared for injured and sick sea turtles found along Texas beaches and were later released back into the Gulf of Mexico. The Zoo successfully hatched two blue-billed curassow chicks, one of the most endangered bird species in the world. This year the Zoo is saving thousands of wild bird

species by selling bird friendly coffee. The Zoo’s roaster is certified to ensure their coffee farms protect wild birds. Here are some of the wildlife-saving efforts the Houston Zoo, along with conservation field partners, were a part of in 2021. These efforts and programs help to ensure protection for animals for generations to come.

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight a look back at 2021 successes with the Houston Zoo. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

GIRAFFES- Provided food and water to more than 70 wild giraffes in Kenya throughout a draught.

ATTWATER’S PRAIRIE CHICKEN- 69 Attwater’s prairie chickens hatched at the Zoo’s breeding facility and were released into the wild. This work is saving this Texas bird from extinction.

BEARS- Protected wild bears’ homes with the Zoo’s new paperless ticketing system.

HOUSTON TOAD- The Zoo maintains a Houston toad breeding facility on-site to aid in the protection of this species year-round. 782,000 Houston toad eggs, 150 Houston toad tadpoles, and 450 toadlets produced at the Zoo and were reintroduced into the wild. This work is helping to save this Texas toad from extinction.

SEA TURTLES- Offered medical care for more than 100 wild sea turtles in Texas. The Zoo also helped protect wild sea turtles in Galapagos by providing protection for 58 green sea turtle nests in Galapagos.

SEA LIONS AND PENGUINS- Protected wild sea lions and penguins: 16 Galapagos conservation organizations, Zoo teens, volunteers and staff reduced threats to marine wildlife by reducing and cleaning up plastic trash in Galapagos and Texas. Houston PetTalk Magazine

MEET SOPHIE OF ANIMAL JUSTICE LEAGUE

Say hello to fluffy and adorable Sophie who is approximately 2 yrs. young. Although resembling a “mini” St. Bernard, Sophie weighs 40 lbs. and she has been with a foster home for 10 months. During that time, AJL has discovered she loves playing with other dogs, hanging out in the yard and learning new tricks. She can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly! Her ideal home would have a yard, another dog pal (or two), and older kids. Animal Justice League is a 501(c)3 rescue that's been serving the unwanted dogs and cats of Houston since 2015. They are 100% foster-based, which means they never could have saved Sophie (or the thousands of animals they’ve rescued) without a volunteer willing to open up their homes to help her find her happily ever after.
