LETTER FROM THE EDITOR 7 A ©Daniel Ortiz

20TH ANNIVERSARY NOTE

1. My kids, Kaia and Stian, at a rescue fundraiser ages 4 and 6. They've been helping mom out for a long time! 2. A few years later, they are still being dragged to pet events but they thought it was OK if they could bring our dogs too. 3. You know your child is on your team when they help all day at an event and even fall asleep with PetTalk tatoos all over their face! 4. Mark Silberman has probably had to endure the most from my job and always does it with a smile. 5. Being silly with Jim Tweedy during a 2008 photoshoot. Jim is the talent behind the Henrietta illustrations. 6. Since 2009, Desiree Lonsway, pictured with Cesar Millan, has helped me with everything from AD creation, to marketing to Co-Chairing Doggy Party. 7. CAP Gala, 2018 - my kids Stian and Kaia are still supporting me after all these years. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL! ll I can say is WOW! I never imagined I would be writing the editor’s note commemorating 20 years of PetTalk! It’s been a fantastic experience that has opened up a world of interesting characters to me, provided amazing access to accomplished people and most importantly, has given me the opportunity to further my passion of helping animals. My background and education is in business, not in journalism or anything to do with publishing, meaning I am truly “self-taught”, for better or worse. People ask how I got started with PetTalk and like many things in life, it just “happened” and wasn’t part of a plan. Sometimes I wonder if I’m the captain of my ship or just a passenger that has no control over where the ship is headed but either way, life’s journey is full of unexpected departures from our planned course! Two decades ago, I was in corporate America and fairly miserable. I decided I wanted a change and while working on another business idea, a friend approached me with the opportunity to acquire the 16 page publication that had a handful of sponsors. I figured I could move forward with my business idea and publish PetTalk “on the side”. I laugh every time I remember thinking the publication would be a side business. How naive I was! It’s taken over my life and requires every extra minute I can give it but I truly love publishing. I enjoy planning editorial, writing, meeting a variety of people and getting to play with so many animals. However, sometimes at 1am when we’re trying to get the magazine finished and off to the printer (hopefully with no mistakes!), I have to remind myself why I love what I do.

1 It's those times that I remind myself that if the magazine’s content can keep just one owner from turning their pet into a shelter or convince one person to adopt a rescue dog and not support puppy mills, then it’s all worth it. Or, as happened recently, someone read the October issue regarding the humane treatment of farm animals and made the decision to go vegan for their entire family. That’s when I know my work makes a difference for the greater good. In the early 2000’s, the magazine was just 16 pages printed on newspaper print and today, it’s 68 glossy pages filled with a variety of content including local news, events, tips on caring for one’s pet, veterinary advice, adoptable animals, human interest stories, shopping guides, local celebrity stories and in they last few years, the addition of the larger topic of wildlife and environmental conservation. In my mind, all animals matter and I have been excited to bring topics to the readers that include humane treatment of farm animals, conservation of endangered species and educational topics on how we as humans can help protect animals and our planet. The continued success of the publication is a testament to the many people that have supported PetTalk’s mission as well as supporting me in the grueling schedule of publishing monthly. I have so many people to THANK! First, I want to say how much I appreciate you, the reader. Without your years of readership, attending our events, engaging with us on social media, sending us your ideas and very importantly, supporting our sponsors, PetTalk would have ceased to exist long ago. Two decades in the publishing

2 3 business is an eternity and there have been many magazines come and go over that time period, so I am very grateful to still remain on the stands and in digital format every month. Next, I want to thank our sponsors. Without advertising dollars, the public wouldn’t receive this FREE resource every month that hopefully helps the community and the animals within it. From pet services and products to pet-friendly living communities to custom pools, galleries, restaurants and more, our sponsors make this publication possible. Although it may be tempting to purchase online from a national business with no ties to Houston, I strongly encourage you to shop with our sponsors because not only do they make PetTalk possible, they in many cases support the local pet charities and rescues (who have also been great PetTalk supporters) by offering free boarding, grooming, pet food, etc. to animals in need. Essentially, they are ESSENTIAL to our pet community so please show them your love and appreciation by shopping with them! I of course have to thank the team of people that help with the publication

6

and event production, including Desiree Lonsway who co-created Doggy Party on the Plaza and lends her amazing graphic skills to the creation of advertisements. She also colorizes the Henrietta graphics so generously created by artist Jim Tweedy. The magazine layout production is created by Andrew Burwell since 2006 and a couple of years ago, Gabby Garcia joined as my assistant (which means she has to do quite a variety of things). Thank you to each of you for your contribution to PetTalk! And last but definitely not least I have to thank my family for the laundry list of wonderful things they have done over the years to help me meet the demands of my job. To Stian, Kaia and Mark–you have endured carrying countless boxes of magazines up stairs, through the rain, across fields in the hot sun; you’ve helped set up and take down the PetTalk booth at the dog show for many years and even waited patiently (somewhat) while I watched the only chance I had each year to see the Best In Show competition late on Sunday evening after we had been there for 6 days; you attended countless events and helped me with whatever I asked you to do; you answered my thousands of questions about ideas I wanted to run by you for editorial or what photo I should select or what I should wear, or what color the cover should be and so on; you endured the times when I am a “momentary monster” from stressful deadlines; you covered for me at home with the daily duties of the household when I was too busy or off at photoshoots; and you offered words of encouragement when the road seemed “ruff”. But most of all, you let me know I had your support and offered the best compliment of all…you believed in my mission and that I was doing valuable

4

5 work. That acknowledgement is a true gift for which I am very grateful. 2020 has been a tough year to say the least, so a reason to celebrate is welcome and I hope you will join me in the celebration of this 20th Anniversary milestone. I also hope you enjoy this issue’s walk down memory lane as much as I enjoyed creating it. As I sifted through the archives, I literally laughed out loud at times and teared up at others, including the passing in June of my longtime photographer and friend, Evin Thayer. It’s fair to say that PetTalk has not been just a job for me, it has been an integral part of my life through creating new friendships, learning new skills, stretching my comfort zone, and meeting some of the most amazing animals in the world. I am thankful for the blessings in my life and humbly grateful for the opportunity to live my passion. Thank you again for your support and I look forward to continuing the PetTalk brand and impacting the lives of animals and people as we move into this new decade…together.

Henrietta H'S HISTORY

PetTalk’s mascot Henrietta first hit the scene as a “Rovering” Reporter in 2004, dishing on everything from H-Town gossip, shopping excursions, and interviews to her ongoing love/ hate relationship with her mother, the editor, also known as The Dragon Lady, or DL for short. Her illustrated character was born out of a litter of famed pups created by artist Jim Tweedy known as the “Friendly Doggies”. The cartoon-like illustrated doggies are characterized by their big noses, dot eyes and humorous personalities. Jim created the first Henrietta series in which she was ALWAYS carrying her purse, but she later was depicted in a multitude of situations and the illustrations took on a whole new style, with some being digitally colorized by Desiree Lonsway. Henrietta definitely challenges the team to depict her in ALL SORTS of crazy situations. To understand her character, there are a few basic principles to know about her: She is overweight, constantly striving to have “less junk in the trunk” but her love of food is legendary and of course precludes her from ever becoming that elusive size 4. In particular, she is fond of chocolate eclairs, hot dogs, french fries with lots of ketchup, meaty bones, marshmallows, funions, puppy lattes, donuts, chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, and anything chocolate. Her love of food might only be eclipsed by her love of adult libations. She spends many of her days, or nights, or anytime she is upset, happy, sad, contemplating a decision or just looking for a place to escape DL, at the

local watering hole, The Salty Dog, owned by Max, a drooling, not-so-smart Rottweiler. The neighbor-hood dogs make up Henrietta’s social sphere, for better or worse. Her nemesis are three-fold: Penelope the overindulged, snooty, self-adoring Poodle and Lolita, the prancy, size 2, know-it-all, Chihuahua. She also has a strong dislike for Felicity Farnsworth, whose breed we don’t know but she is best friends with Penelope and the two are a walking (or trotting) billboard for designer handbags and haute couture. Henrietta of course has no interest in these flashy luxury items that belie one’s need to show off to the world (in particular because she can’t afford them but she will have No One know that she is just a tad bit jealous). Beyond the characters that make the hair raise on her neck, Henrietta is surrounded by her friends which are essentially all her cousins. The extensive number of cousins is due to her mother’s side of the family being prone to indiscriminate breeding habits and all of the cousins have names beginning with “H”. To date, the cousins that have been introduced include: Harriet, Henri, Harold, Helen, Hank, Harry, Harvey, Hazel and her absolute best friend and cohort in crime, Hortense. Cousin Hortense is given the lot in life of trying to prop up Henrietta’s ego, listen to her ramblings and being dragged into crazy schemes that Henrietta often gets them into with the most precarious of outcomes. In addition to loving food and drink, Henrietta loves shopping, being adored by her self-described “fans”, hunky guys, champagne and caviar, talking pawlitics, saving her brethren at the local shelter, colloquialisms and idioms, being thought of as important, tennis,

4.

country music and diamonds. Her list of things she hates is rather extensive but the top tier in order of most hated would be: Cats, Penelope & Felicity, exercise, dieting, squirrels, getting up in the morning and being on time for work, sugar-free anything, disrespecting Texas, lack of imagination, dead-beats and no private toilets for her “kind”. The final point of note regarding the life and history of Henrietta would be a glimpse at a few of the “predicaments” she has gotten herself into which include: trying her paw at stand-up comedy at The Improv; entering a contest in which she thought the prize was a Kiss From Seal (as in the singer) all to find when she won that she had read it incorrectly and it was a Kiss From A Seal; the time her cousin Harriet invited her to London for what she thought was in invitation to William and Kate’s wedding, all to find out it was something quite different indeed and she wound up disguising herself as a Buckingham Palace guard and sneaking into the Queen’s quarters; the rouse of wearing a cat costume to infiltrate the Calling All Cats Society Luncheon; and her attempt to try out for the Texas A&M mascot Reveille are just a few of her antics. With that glimpse into the make-up of the grey matter in Henrietta’s head, one can see that Henrietta is quite a colorful, entertaining gal and if you would like to read her extensive number of monthly columns she has written over the years, they are archived in PetTalk’s digital issue located at houstonpettalk.com. The columns are typically located on page 10 in most issues. It would not be a complete tribute to Henrietta and the many hours she has devoted to her column if we did not give her a chance to offer her musings in this most special of PetTalk issues, so without further ado, here she is!

5.

Musings & Best Of HENRIETTA ON THE DOUBLE DECADE CELEBRATION Although I’ve only been around for 16 of the 20 PetTalk years, that’s still 112 dog years of fun times, late night writings, an “abundance” of time with DL, hundreds of events wearing shoes that don’t fit, more time with DL, plenty of Salty Dog “conferences”, tons of late night dumpster dives with Hortense, more time with DL, an immeasurable amount of photoshoots that resulted in “a lesson learned”, and way too much time with DL. Oh and, way too much time in the office with DL with me in THE CHAIR (if you aren’t familiar with THE CHAIR, read my September 2020 column). I have to say that my experience as the Rovering Reporter for PetTalk, a position which I secured through a modicum of knowledge and a ton of nepotism, has been an incredible journey that has taken me, at times, to the depths of despair while at other times taken me to the pinnacle of joy. I guess that is why they call life “a ride”. As

you know, I am prone to musings and pontifications (as well as a few hair-brained schemes) so when Mom and I sat down the other night to share a glass of bubbly in celebration of my spokesdog role with PetTalk (Dragon Lady can be fun at times), I couldn’t help but take a little jaunt down memory lane. I figured I should stop and smell the roses (and the trees, and the fire hydrants) and appreciate the amazing job I have and share a few of the highlights. Most bizarre photo shoot: A family that had a miniature horse living in their suburban backyard. It swam in the pool, came in the house and also bit my mom on the butt. I made a joke that he just thought she was a horse’s ass. You can probably guess what happened next. What I’ve learned: Don’t let people wear stripes for photos, don’t laugh when people dye their poodle’s hair, always pee before getting in mom’s car, take Valium before photoshoots with cats, use tape to secure the mouth of an alligator before photographing, don’t imbibe and write your column at midnight, and last but not least, arrive at the event BEFORE it’s over. Most challenging photoshoot: Paws down First Lady Barbara Bush. Now, don't get me wrong, it was nothing the First Lady did to make it challenging. The challenge was getting DL through it. Think smelling salts, lots of pep talks and maybe there was wine involved. Biggest moment of my career: Meeting Jack Hanna. I've been watching him since I was a pup when he would regularly appear on The Tonight Show. He's a titan in the animal world and he actually patted

me on the head! He also talks faster than any other human I've met. Biggest shocker: Jeff Corwin was not taller than me! Weirdest Celeb: Robert F. Kennedy. Can't tell you why. Strangest thing I’ve ever seen DL do: Take the iron out and begin ironing magazines that had been boxed incorrectly, leaving an “unfortunate” crease across the face of a well known socialite. That was so whacked. I actually felt sorry for her as she fervently tried the impossible. Most gratifying moment: Giving extreme makeovers to Hurricane Ike survivors, featuring them in PetTalk, and getting them adopted. Most scared I've been: During a photoshoot with a VERY, VERY rich Houstonian, she took me by the paw and asked me to come to her bedroom. I've heard rich people can be weird so I was more than frightened at what she was about to do. But alas, she just wanted to show me a portrait of herself and her cat. Only time I've ever been happy to see a cat. Houston PetTalk Magazine

join our pack

You can join our pack in a few ways: Raise awareness for the PAW Grant. Share it with your friends, family, and coworkers Donate to the PAW Grant In-person. Ask our client care team to round up your bill to the nearest dollar when checking out. SLVS24EC saw almost 20,000 new pets in 2019. If every pet owner rounded up to the nearest dollar, those pennies would have generated more than $10,000 On-line. You can donate to the PAW Grant through the bit.ly link, then join our online Facebook Group for PAWtners to get updates on when grants are released, what the PAW Grant is doing, and insider information to all of SLVS24EC

A pack is an extended family group that you get to choose. When a pet is brought to SLVS24EC, we know it's one of the darkest days of their lives. When you choose SLVS24EC to help you at that time, you become part of our pack - part of our extended family group. Our goal is to get your pet well or to extend the time that your pet feels well until it’s time to say goodbye. For all of our diagnostic capabilities, talented specialists and emergency doctors, advanced veterinary nurses and support staff, we cannot achieve wellness for pets on our own. There are times that the cost to achieve wellness is higher than some pet parents who come to SLVS24EC can afford. In those cases, we offer payment plans through Scratch Pay and Care Credit, accept every single major credit or debit card, and take donations from family or friends over the phone to help cover the cost to achieve wellness. Sometimes, that’s still not enough and pet parents need additional help. Our dedicated team, tired of having their hands tied by these situations outside of their control, wanted to do more. They wanted to be a different kind of veterinary specialty and emergency hospital. That’s how the PAW (Packs Achieve Wellness) Grant was created, from our dedicated teams burning desire to do more- to be more. But we can’t do it alone.

A Look Back at

Where In The World Is PetTalk

ne of the most unique and fun traditions of PetTalk over the years has been the Where in the World is PetTalk section where our readers share photos with us from their world travels. The tradition started back in April of 2010 when my friend, Hershey Grace, sent a photo of her reading PetTalk at a cafe in Paris. The idea to share it in the magazine with our readers was mentioned and everyone thought that was a fun idea and so it began. Since that time, we have had hundreds of submissions from literally every corner of the world! It has been amazing to get photos from iconic places like the Eiffel Tower, the Korean DMZ, Stonehenge, Notre Dame

Cathedral,, Antartica, Machu Picchu, Egyptian pyramids, Mt. Rushmore and even Angkor Wat. We have loved all of the images and have been so impressed with how many readers take their PetTalk all over the world! We have also had some very creative submissions including skydiving and pets reading the magazine. Our readers have very smart pets! A special shout out to my friend Hershey for starting the idea and to the Arnold family who has traveled the world and sent us so many great photos‌they definitely get the most traveled award! Plus, thank you to everyone who has sent a photo and please keep them coming in the future‌we love it!

OUR PATHSuccess! TO

By Michelle Mantor, Editor & Publisher of Houston PetTalk

I

t’s the Platinum Paw anniversary for PetTalk! Twenty years of publishing a title is a major milestone. For some industries two decades may not seem like such a big deal but in publishing, where the two-year fail rate is more than 80%, PetTalk’s success is an achievement to celebrate. There are plenty of memories to share with you from milestones to anecdotes to the evolution of Houston’s pet community. Come take a walk with me down memory lane as we look at the highlights of meeting famous people, successful growth of the Houston PetTalk brand, the impact we’ve made on helping the animals of our community and how our city has

A LITTLE HISTORY

Houston PetTalk’s maiden issue was published by Frances Goodman in May of 2000. Frances was a dog trainer who enjoyed journalism and decided to share her thoughts through creating a publication. When Frances made the decision to move to another state, a mutual friend connected the two of us. I was fresh out of the corporate America meat grinder and looking for something to do with animals. The timing was perfect but I had no idea what I was taking on and what would be

FAMOUS Encounters! T

he people I’ve met through publishing Houston PetTalk have been the second most gratifying element of the business, with helping and saving animals being number one. Meeting notable people is an exciting prospect and, as you’ll see, a learning experience too!

THE PLINER PRINCIPLE

The first “famous” person I met oddly enough was footwear designer Donald Pliner in 2004. His Highland Village store was having a fundraiser for SNAP and I was told by a SNAP employee that Donald Pliner was appearing at the store along with his cute dog, Baby Doll, and they suggested I go meet Donald and photograph him and Baby Doll for our Centerfold story. I’m embarrassed to admit I had no idea who

28

www.houstonpettalk.com

Donald Pliner was (I’m not a couture gal). I called a friend (who is a couture gal) and casually mentioned I was meeting some guy named Donald Pliner. The next thing I know she’s walking in the door with me to the event holding a pair of Donald Pliner shoes for him to autograph. I was actually so ignorant to who I was meeting that I showed up with my 2002 Salt Lake Olympic’s derby cap on backwards no less. Of course, had I known of his fame in the fashion world, I would have fretted and undoubtedly chose different attire. Lesson learned: Sometimes it’s better to be ignorant about who you are interviewing and then you can just be yourself.

THE MILLAN MOMENT

In 2006, Cesar Millan was speaking at Triple Crown Academy for dog training in Austin and I scored a personal interview with him. This time I knew whom I was meeting! I expected to have a few minutes with him in some non-descript corner of the massive conference hall, but to my surprise, I was granted 30 minutes with him in a luxury RV Coach belonging to someone “high up” in

the pet training world. I remember thinking as I climbed up the tiny stairs to the living room that I was the envy of so many people at that moment. Alone with Cesar in an RV and with his full attention! I was not AT ALL prepared for 30 minutes with those dark, piercing eyes patiently waiting for me to ask some brilliant questions. I winged it and was not thrown out of the RV so I guess I managed to conceal my nonchalant prep for the interview. Lesson learned: Never assume your subject is too busy for you.

COMPOSED FOR CORWIN

In 2007, I had an opportunity to meet and feature Jeff Corwin of Animal Planet on our cover. Fresh off my laissez-faire preparation for

Cesar Millan, I diligently studied Jeff Corwin’s background, prepared questions that I thought rivaled Barbara Walters probing interview style and headed to the Galleria for my moment of fame. Jeff was speaking at the Houston SPCA’s annual Spring Luncheon. I sat through his speech and waited for those in charge to provide me with my interview room. I was ushered into the VIP area where Jeff was mingling with guests who had paid a nice sum of money to support the Houston SPCA and meet him. When it was all said and done, I was photographed with him and that was it. Nada. Not a single question did I ask. I was left to my own volition to write an entire feature story on a handshake and a photo. Lesson learned: Never assume your subject has time for you.

THE JOY OF JOANNE

I first met Joanne King Herring, the beautiful movie-star-quality icon of Houston’s social and philanthropic world, in 2007. Once again, I had no idea who she was until I saw her captivating photo on the cover of Icon Magazine. I have to admit I don’t “read” a lot of magazine stories due to a consummate lack of time but I do pick up and flip through many publications just to see what’s happening in my industry. But

china doll face and my fascination with the life she had lived. Intimidated but undaunted, I approached her and introduced myself. She was absolutely charming and lovely. We hit it off instantly and she agreed to pose for a PetTalk cover. She appeared on our cover in October of 2007 (and again in 2013). The photo session was just what I hoped for. Relaxed, fun and she spent several hours sharing her stories with me, exactly as I had imagined the year before. Her dog Dandy kept us laughing with his antics of jumping in our photographer’s equipment bag and Joanne was so experienced in front of the camera that the shots were easy to get. Since that time, she’s become one of my dear friends and I count my lucky stars that she’s still willing to give me a warm hug, confidence boosting compliments and her practical, sage advice. Lesson learned: If you want something, go for it. Don’t be shy!

animals and through his Utopia Animal Rescue ranch, he has worked to save the animals at death’s door. That takes a really kind, gentle soul. Lesson learned: Don’t judge a cowboy by his hat.

THE BUSH BLESSING

I can’t think of words to describe meeting First Lady Barbara Bush, who graciously agreed to appear on our cover in December of 2009. My close friends will tell you that Barbara Bush was the number one person in the world I most wanted for a cover since the

FINDING FRIEDMAN (KINKY THAT IS) something about Joanne’s glamour ignited my curiosity and I sat down to read the feature story. I learned about her worldly life as Honorary Consul to Pakistan, her efforts to help the people of Afghanistan fight Communism and her legendary parties for dignitaries. I thought she was incredibly fascinating and that meeting someone like her and listening to her life story would be an amazing experience but only something I could dream about. A few months later, I was at a Citizen’s For Animal Protection event and there she stood, just a few feet away from me. I couldn’t even remember her name but I remembered that

I’ve had the good fortune of three encounters with Kinky Friedman, the enigmatic musician-writer-politician-animal savior. Not a single time was he without his signature cigar and cowboy hat. Kinky is one of those people who have the incredible ability to make you nervous and relaxed at the same time. I can’t quite figure out how he does it but it’s kind of a weird feeling to be on guard but feel like you can go astray from protocol or mainstream and it would be completely acceptable. The surprise about Kinky is that you expect this rough and tough cowboy type but he’s really a sensitive, thinking man. He has a huge soft spot for downtrodden Houston PetTalk Magazine

moment I began publishing. I had written several times to request her participation in the magazine but each time, I received a very respectful “no”. In July of 2009, inspired by a close friend that encouraged me to try again, I decided to give my titanic-sized goal one more chance. The day her assistant called to accept the invitation, my kids thought something terrible had happened based on the sounds emanating from my office! I don’t think I had a total of 50 hours of sleep over the next two months before the interview and photo session was to take place at her home here in Houston. I would wake up thinking, “What if President Bush comes in the room, do I curtsy? Do I ask him to join in the photo? What do I say? Am I allowed to pet their dogs? All silly thoughts but you know how it goes in the middle of the night, everything is unreasonable. I actually lived through the experience, red blotches on my neck and all. Mrs. Bush could not have been more engaging and willing to be a part of Houston PetTalk. She shared her home, her dogs and some great stories with us. It was truly an experience of a lifetime and I’m so grateful to her for giving me the opportunity to realize a major goal in my life. She even assured me the magazine would be part of history in the Bush Library. What a bonus! Lesson learned: Never underestimate the ability to make your goals or dreams come true.

THE PARKER PROMISE

©Pete Baatz

Mayor Annise Parker needs no introduction to the Houston community having been our Mayor from 2010 to 2016, but what some may not know is that she was a supporter of the animals in our community and under her leadership, the city shelter, BARC, made important improvements. I met Mayor Parker on numerous occasions and she was always accessible and it was evident that she was a true animal lover. In April of 2011, she appeared on our cover in a story that chronicled her promise to support Houston’s animal shelter

30

and animal community. True to her word, she continued to give her time to improving BARC and attending countless animal charity fundraisers. During her tenure, she never missed a year being PetTalk’s Grand Marshal of our Rescue Parade at the annual Doggy Party on the Plaza, for which I was very grateful. Lesson learned: Elect officials who love animals.

THE DEJORIA DIFFERENCE

In May of 2011, photographer Evin Thayer and I traveled to Austin to photograph and interview John Paul DeJoria for the cover of PetTalk. “JP” as he is called, is famous for co-founding the Paul Mitchell line of hair products, creating John Paul Pet and The Patron Spirits Company to name a few. The opportunity came about through his PR team promoting his new pet products line and although I was aware of who he was, I didn’t quite know the extent of his far-reaching fortune and philanthropy. I had decided in advance not to “over-study” for the interview and let the conversation flow however seemed natural. His sprawling estate in Austin is a California-style ranch situated on a waterway with beautiful acreage. As I was thinking what an L.A. vibe the house had with its really cool artwork, John Paul emerged with his signature pony-tail and barefoot. Very L.A.! He was warm and hospitable while showing us around his property and posing for photos with his beautiful Golden Retriever. We chatted for quite some time about everything from his product line to his role in working to feed the poor in Appalachia (my stomping grounds). He is quite fascinating given that he once lived out of his car and now he is a billionaire! We ended the day with him giving us a large shot

of chilled Platinum Patron and a bag of pecans from his yard…we were already like old friends LOL! Once I got home, I realized I hadn’t written ONE WORD from the interview. But it didn’t end up making a difference because I wrote the entire story in one sitting and hadn’t forgotten the details. I did however have to look up a couple of facts and that’s when I discovered that he was a BILLIONAIRE with his hand in tons of business interests including tech, a Harley Davidson dealership, the House of Blues nightclub chain, energy companies and he even owns a train. If I had known all

that, I would have been more nervous knowing I was interviewing a business titan! Lesson learned: Once again, ignorance can be bliss!

THE MAJOR MILLION DOLLAR MOMENT

In 2013, one of the most famous actors from my era graced the cover of PetTalk, Lee Majors. I grew up watching Lee every Sunday night playing the role of Colonel Steve Austin, The Six Million Dollar Man (an ex-astronaut with bionic implants for you youngsters that may now be aware of the show). The show also “co-mingled” with another show called The Bionic Woman, which I faithfully watched as well. Lee was gorgeous and a pop icon.

excited it made me giggle! Lesson learned: If you make a boy's Momma happy, you’ll make him happy!

JOKIN’ WITH JACK

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the critters Jack Hanna brought to the stage of the late night talk shows, even going back to Johnny Carson! Jack, famed zookeeper and a director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, is basically America’s version of Steve Irwin. He’s one of the best pet ambassadors in the world and someone I was always fascinated by...I wanted his job LOL! Unexpectedly, I was given an invitation to photograph and interview Jack for the September 2105 PetTalk cover during his visit as headline entertainment for Bridgeland’s annual NatureFest. I was SO excited to meet him but of course a bit nervous. By this point, I had learned you NEVER KNOW what you are going to get with celebs, like the proverbial box of chocolates. Well, he turned out to be a milk chocolate covered caramel - my favorite! He was so squarely focused on the animals that he was borderline obsessive but in a good way. He knew every detail about every animal and there was NO mistake that it was his passion hands down! We photographed him with a baby kangaroo and definitely had a few laughs during our time together. He has a fun sense of humor but after the laugh, it’s back to business. He talks fast, stays on task and basically, you are just challenged to keep up! Lesson learned: When photographing an animal that has strong back feet, don’t assume one of the top animal ambassadors in the world can hold it. Always travel with a blanket.

He was the consummate Hollywood star and the chances of me, sitting in West Virginia in the 70’s watching this STAR on TV ever meeting were of course laughable. Fast forward decades later and I was literally using a lint-roller on his leg to remove cat hair for the photo. Who would’ve thought???? Lesson learned: Never underestimate yourself and always carry a lint roller.

CALVIN THE CHARACTER

When a well-known athlete is willing to lend their fame and name to animal causes, you know they are the real deal! In August of 2016, Astros Pitcher Lance McCullers, Jr. appeared on our cover with the cutest little Chihuahua. Lance and his wife both are very involved in the Houston rescue community and can often be seen at various events and have been given awards by local charities for their work in saving animals. Lance was very nice, easy to talk to and in addition to his handsome looks, he also sports really awesome socks! Lesson learned: Men who dress with class are fun to look at!

2013 proved to be a fun year at PetTalk and in December, I had the pleasure of meeting Calvin Murphy, the colorful Hall of Fame NBA Player and Analyst of Houston Rockets games. Anyone that watches the NBA knows who Calvin is and they certainly know his penchant for Over-The-Top suits. His personality is bigger than his 5-foot-9 inch frame and he is all smiles when you meet him. He posed with an adorable Maltese adoptable for our December cover and we had a fun chat about our shared talent, baton twirling, although I was not in the same skill level as Calvin for sure! About a year later, I was at a Rockets game and Calvin was walking up the stairs and I called to him. Once he recognized me, his face lit up, he gave me a big hug and said, “You have no idea how happy you made my Momma when she saw me on that cover! Thank you so much for that. She was just telling everyone 'Look at my baby'!" He was so

ROOTS WITH THE ROCKETS

As many of you know, I’m from West Virginia, meaning my “roots” are the same as Houston Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni. His brother Dan is the head coach of my Alma Mater, Marshall University, and my mother has worked in the athletic world of WV for quite some time and knows Dan. I joked with her that she should help me get Mike D’Antoni for a PetTalk cover. I will never forget sitting in an auditorium for jury duty on the Friday Hurricane Harvey was arriving, thinking, “Why in the world is our city government keeping us captive here knowing a storm is coming”, when I got a text message from my mom giving me Coach D’Antoni’s cell phone number and told me to contact him. What??? I couldn’t just call up the coach of the Houston Rockets! So, I did what most cowards would do, I texted him. Very soon thereafter, his wife Laurel texted me back and said she would help me make this work..and she did! Not only was the coach on our November 2017 cover, but many of the Rockets agreed to be photographed with animals that were up for adoption from Houston Humane Society. Hurricane Harvey had already left his destruction behind, so many animals were in dire need in shelters. Photographer Robyn Arouty did a fantastic job capturing these “gentle giants” with precious puppies and kittens in the hallway of Toyota Center.

www.houstonpettalk.com

Getting a yes from ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons to appear on our December 2017 cover was definitely one of my top moments of excitement in terms of meeting a celeb. To put this in perspective, I had ZZ Top’s Deguello album as an 8-track tape in my 65 Mustang convertible in 1980 and I spent many hours rockin’ to Cheap Sunglasses, I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide and Fool For Your Stockings, so to say this was gonna be an iconic moment would be an understatement. ZZ Top was in town performing at the Stafford Centre and we were given a time slot and a room with 4 walls and a few metal chairs for the photoshoot. Not exactly a great backdrop for photographing ANYTHING, much less a cover, but when God gives you a celebrity of ZZ Top proportions, you don’t complain! Evin Thayer did a great job improvising and got a nice cover shot. I will say that if ever there was a man whose voice did not fit his body, it might be Billy. He is very thin, almost frail and then he speaks and he sounds like God with a deep resonating voice. He is very intelligent

(I watched him give a few interviews before it was our turn) and he is very giving. He was happy to do whatever he could to bring awareness to the plight of animals in Houston after Hurricane Harvey. I knew it might be a bit of an “over ask” to bring along my son’s guitar and my Tres Embres album to get his autograph but a girl has to try! He was so gracious that not only did he sign it with the silver metallic sharpie I brought along, he drew an elaborate graphic on the guitar to boot (see inset photo). Very cool dude! After the shoot, about two months later, I needed to meet up with Billy to get his autograph on a bottle of Pura Vida Tequila that had been won by a PetTalk reader in our photo contest. Billy is an investor in Pura Vida Tequila and he agreed to autograph a bottle “the next time he was in town.” My house had flooded during the hurricane and I was living temporarily in West U. I got a call from Billy’s business partner one day as I sat at the kitchen table working on PetTalk, still in my “morning clothes” and what happened next

was just short of a miracle. Billy's business partner called to say he and Billy were just finishing lunch at Escalante’s in CityCentre and they were only gong to be there for 20 more minutes if I could make it there in time. Holy #@$! was my main thought. I looked awful and of course was a 25-minute drive away. I ran through the house tearing off my “morning clothes”, pulling on whatever I could find given that I only had a very slim selection of clothes at my temporary living quarters. The one thing I did have of most importance was my favorite hat. I grabbed the hat, ran out the door, applied make-up while driving way too fast and made it in time. Once I arrived, we got the bottle signed (while everyone in Escalantes stared at us…weird feeling!) and I asked Billy how many copies of the magazine he wanted and he quietly held up 4 fingers. Why 4 I will never know but that’s what I gave him and in his mild mannered way he said, “You know, I’ve had a lot of people call me and say they saw me on this cover.” I took that as a great compliment! Lesson learned: Where do I begin? Keep your old albums, be prepared to get the photo with zilch as a background, buy Pura Vida Tequila (and drink it), always have a hat on hand and be skilled at driving with your knee while applying make-up.

DAN LOVES DOGS

I first met Rep. Dan Crenshaw at the 2019 Houston Dog Show where he and I were contest judges, along with Mattress Mack. The show hadn't really prepared for a “emcee” so Dan took over. He was not shy with the microphone and he even had his own dog with him, which impressed me. I don’t know why I would choose bringing his dog with him as “impressive” when he is clearly impressive as a former United States Navy SEAL and U.S. Congressman, but men that love animals are my kind! I gathered the courage to ask him to be our Notable Houstonian for the December 2019 issue and he said yes. He was very easy to talk to, very relaxed. When the day came for

his photoshoot, his rep. called me at 7am to say there had been a misunderstanding and his wife thought she was going to be part of the photoshoot and had her “gold gown ready to go." Never one to get on the wrong side of a good man’s woman, I said bring it on, we’ll make a space for her. And so we did..and it all turned out great. I think they even used their photo as their Christmas card! Lesson learned: Always have an open spot for another Notable in the December issue.

2020 DECEMBER NOTABLE HOUSTONIAN - WHO'S NEXT?

I love our annual tradition of featuring a notable Houstonian on our December cover along with an essay on a value that is meaningful to them. As I write this, I'm headed to the photoshoot in a few days for this year's December cover. The cover is a SECRET but I can tell you that you won’t want to miss this iconic celebrity’s aptly written essay and cover. A little hint: We are KICKING it in high gear for Houston’s favorite annual issue! I hope you’ve enjoyed a peek at some of the famous encounters I’ve had over the last two decades. With limited space, It was hard to choose which ones to write about because they were all memorable in one way or another. I appreciate these celebrities for their willingness to bring their fame to PetTalk so that we can further our mission for animal welfare…and I can definitely thank them for some lessons learned!

GIVING

BACK T

hrough the last two decades, I like to think PetTalk has been a force for good in our animal community. Via the publication and our digital offerings, the mission has been three-fold: educate the public regarding proper care of their pets, provide a platform for local businesses to promote their products and services, and last but definitely not least, promote animal welfare including rescue and adoption, reduction of animal abuse and homelessness, and advocate for the value of ALL animals, including wildlife.

Houston Humane Society Fun Run

It is with our three-fold mission in mind that I approach the content that we curate and create for the magazine and digital media. Going beyond content creation, the PetTalk team has also worked diligently over the years to give back to the community by sponsoring

Houston World Series of Dog Shows

events, providing in-kind donations, supporting the rescue community with access to free messaging and distributing over $100,000 in prize donations via our signature event, Doggy Party on the Plaza, as well as donations to particular causes. Having respect for animals makes us better humans and I am proud of our Houston pet community for being vibrant, active and strong with thousands of people joining in daily to do their part for animal welfare. Unfortunately, Houston has one of the worst pet over-population problems in the U.S., leaving hundred of thousands of stray animals on the streets to live in horrid conditions. Through our rescue community, untold numbers of animals have been saved and are living wonderful lives in their forever home. Kudos to every single hand that helped in any number of ways to give these animals a better life through volunteering, donating money, adopting an animal, working to get laws changed, fostering animals, educating the public and more. Over the years, PetTalk has been involved as a sponsor to so many great Houston pet events that I couldn’t begin to name them all but here are some highlights from the years, giving testament to the power of people to affect change and bring awareness to animal issues. We have been a proud sponsor, and may I even say cheerleader, for everything

When I decided to move to Houston 12 years ago, I arrived on a wing and a prayer and knew only a handful of people in town. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Michelle very early on and she has been a wonderful colleague, supporter, and friend ever since. During our first meeting, Michelle believed in me enough to agree to run a tiny ad for my new tiny dog training business at no charge. I don't remember how long that lasted, but before too long, I was able to pay for a much more substantial ad. I am forever grateful for Michelle's support and her willingness to take a chance on me meant so much in those early days. Thank you and congratulations on 20 years! Through PetTalk, I have not only exposed my art skills to the pet loving public, but also have learned much about the care, the traits, and the health hazards of animals. Congratulations to Pet Talk Magazine for 20 years of an ever-evolving and quality content driven magazine for both pet owners and advertisers. I still remember back around 2000/2001 when the magazine was still in newspaper print but once Michelle took it over, it progressed considerably to a household name that's on most pet owners' coffee tables everywhere. Thanks again for your dedication to us, your advertisers, for getting our expertise into the hands of pet owners throughout the city suburbs of Houston and maintaining a true dedication to quality presentation, information and overall professionalism. I look forward to the next 20 yrs., so don't retire! Dean Miller of Club Canine

Congratulations, Michelle! You have made a difference in the lives of countless animals through your thoughtful articles and selfless devotion to Houston PetTalk! Of course, my favorite edition has always been October 2001, when my beloved cat, Dixie, was featured on the cover with the first human, me! Engage With PetTalk Beyond 2. FACEBOOK

The next big chasm to cross in our evolution was creating our social media presence, beginning with Facebook. As a media outlet, we understood the beauty of engaging with our readers in a format that allowed for a two-way conversation in a rather seamless manner. Our Facebook page gives us the opportunity to make timely announcements (which is important for a monthly publication) that provide everything from event details to news alerts of a missing pet. We appreciate our Facebook followers and your feedback! If you haven’t followed us, be sure to find us at facebook.com/houstonpettalk.

1. HoustonPetTalk.com

When the world of digital communication rang, PetTalk answered! Not long after the print publication launched, we created a website to extend the brand with emerging trends. The website has experienced a few “face lifts” over the years and continues to deliver valuable information. In particular, houstonpettalk.com houses our magazine in digital format, including back issues as far back as 2010! We also post a plethora of articles, resources and links to our social media.

MILESTONES FOR THE HOUSTON PET COMMUNITY 2000-2020: In the last two

decades, hundreds of thousands of new residents moved to Harris County along with many pets. What’s interesting about the 2000 to 2010 decade is that pets secured their position as family members rather than backyard dwellers, hence making the landscape for pet products and services all the more robust, offering great choices for pet parents over the last decade. Let’s take a look at how the perspective for pets has changed in the Bayou City since year 2000.

38

www.houstonpettalk.com

2000: Houston PetTalk launches a new publication designed to bring Houston pet owners news, stories, events and happenings.

2001: An estimated 20 animal

rescue groups were formed in Houston. The number of rescue groups has grown to an estimated 100+ in 20 years.

2002: Houston Dog Park As-

sociation opened the Millie Bush Dog Park, which was built by Harris County Precinct 3. In the 18 years since that first park opened in Houston, there are over 50

dog parks to choose from in and around Greater Houston.

2004: Radar, Local Channel 2’s weather dog, made his first on-air appearance. A Wheaten terrier mixed-breed adopted from the Houston Humane Society, Radar was 4 months old when he joined KPRC Local 2. That's when you know pets are taking over!

2005: Hurricane Katrina re-

sulted in the largest animal rescue operation in history. The American public donated more than $100 million to a bevy of animal organi-

zations to assist with that rescue and the subsequent rebuilding project. Houston helped save many of those animals!

2006: Animal Emergency Clinics implemented fully staffed clinics, with around the clock service, to take care of Houston’s ever growing pet population.

2010: The number of pet resorts and daycare facilities tops 100!

2011: Mayor Parker and her administration embark on a focused program to transform Houston’s

THE EXPANSION OF OUR BRAND 4. YOUTUBE

Back in 2015, we created a YouTube channel and we have recently initiated an effort to record behind-the-scenes video from our photoshoots because many of our readers want to know how we create our cover, feature stories and wildlife conservation articles with the Houston Zoo. The creation of video is “a work in progress” that we will continue to develop over the next year. Although we have just started with this new initiative, we already have a number of videos we think you’ll enjoy so check them out and subscribe to our channel, houstonpettalk on YouTube.com.

3. INSTAGRAM

As new social media platforms began to appear, PetTalk has taken advantage of these unique communication vehicles to keep our readers engaged and informed. Follow us on twitter - @houstonpettalk and Instagram - @pettalkmagazine. We definitely want to hear from you but we also LOVE when you share photos of your pets on our Instagram page. The creativity, silliness, and most of all the way you show how crazy you are for your pet makes us smile! In 2019, we created a page in each publication to share some of your posts from our prompted themes at instagram.com/pettalkmagazine. Keep them coming!

embattled, problem-ridden city shelter.

2012: Social Media, particularly

FACEBOOK, develops as a highly used platform to share information regarding animals up for adoption, lost animals and other causes to support the animal community.

2015: Houston’s largest shelter,

BARC, estimated that more than a million stray animals are roaming the city.

2017: In September, Best

5. PetTalkGoFetch.com

In a city the size of Greater Houston, having a resource to track down where to find pet services or products or even dog parks or shelters and rescues that adopt out animals can be daunting. And how are you going to find out about the many pet events each year that you might want to attend? PetTalk answered the call in 2017 by creating a one-stop spot to find all of that valuable information: PetTalkGoFetch.com. This platform not only offers a business listing and event calendar, but also provides an opportunity for the public to post reviews and find money-saving coupons and even search job listings. PetTalkGoFetch continues to grow and add listings so the next time you need information on pet services or what fun event you can attend with your pet, visit us at PetTalkGoFetch.com for the latest!

CRISIS becomes an issue during the Mayoral Race. To date, little has changed.

2020: The pandemic has

created challenges for everyone across the board including people and animals. The initial fear of what would happen to homeless pets in Houston and the rescues and shelters that work to care for them was high. What would

happen to shelters that couldn’t open their doors for adoptions? As people felt the economic impact, what would happen to the critical donations needed for the many charitable organizations that care for Houston’s homeless and abused animals? Thankfully, the Houston community rallied and 2020 has seen record adoptions! With so many people spending more time at home, the love of an animal once again proved the empathy and search for connection of the human soul!

Hi, my FAVORITE cover was Cesar Millan on September 2009. I became a part of the PetTalk family in the year it started. I read it cover to cover because of my career in professional pet sitting. I was lucky enough to meet Michelle Mantor at the Houston Dog Show and also the Houston Rodeo. She’s very photogenic, pretty and I enjoy reading her own personal stories and Letter From The Editor. We LOVE PetTalk Magazine! We love to find all of these fun places to go together. It was also fun when Coco was pictured with her bluebonnets last year! My favorite article ever is the one where it spotlighted an attorney, who discussed estate planning with a trust for your dog. Although I have a will that listed who is to take my Coco in case something happens to me, that article pushed me to create a trust for Coco’s new caregiver and I have peace that Coco will be just fine if I’m ever not around. Thank you for not only that article, but all the insight on training and features we get as readers!! Sonja B.

PetTalk’s Signature Annual Event

11 Years

Doggy Party On The Plaza

www.houstonpettalk.com

By Desiree Lonsway, Co-Chair of Doggy Party on the Plaza

W

hen I look back at the beginnings of the Doggy party on the Plaza, I had no idea how popular this family friendly pet event would become. If you’ve never attended the party, it’s PetTalk Magazine’s signature event that takes place the first weekend in April at CityCentre each year. Thinking back, the inaugural year was actually created to be a one-time extravaganza. PetTalk’s publisher Michelle Mantor originally talked to me about helping her create an event that would highlight local pet businesses. After hours of brainstorming, we thought that we found the perfect way to not only support the pet businesses, but also help get donations for Houston area rescue groups. CityCentre had just opened their doors and it was a great outdoor venue that dogs were allowed to attend. The name “Doggy Party on the Plaza” was a natural fit and the event took place on Saturday, May 22, 2009. Three rescue groups participated and about 20 vendors participated. Houston Dog Ranch was kind enough to be our first and continuous featured sponsor. We expected around 400 – 500 people to attend, so you can image our surprise when over 1,500 people came with their four-legged friends. CityCentre’s Marketing director approached us during the event asking if we would have the party again the next year. Feeling confident that the party was a hit, we agreed, little did we know that over the 10 years, attendance would increase dramatically. The second year, we added the “Rescue Me” Parade which was a fun way for rescue groups to

interact and compete by creating a parade float and marching down the main street. Since we had more Rescue participation, it was the perfect way to help distribute prize donations that had been collected. Over the years, as the party grew, we began expanding and added contests, giveaways, face painters, specialty areas and more. Vendors also increased. In 2019, there were over 100 vendors throughout CityCentre’s streets. We also enrolled the help of many people who were eager to get involved. One notable Houstonian to agree was the Honorable Mayor Annise Parker. She became our first Grand Marshal. In fact, she was involved each year during her Mayoral term. Great Day Houston’s Deborah Duncan became and continues to be a big part of the party as our opening master of ceremonies. Channel 11’s Chief Meteorologist David Paul joined in as our parade emcee and has missed only one year. There have been a long list of celebrities who have graciously donated their time each year and scores of Radio personalities as official parade judges. Many long-term sponsors have been instrumental such as VERGI Emergency and Critical Care Hospital, Peace Love Dogs, Arne’s Pet Supplies plus many more and we thank them all for their support. What began as a one-time event to celebrate a 10 year Anniversary, has continued to attract Dog Lovers for over a decade and become one of Houston’s largest parties for pets and we hope you will Join us April 3, 2021 for the next event or visit doggypartyontheplaza.com to learn more.

Evin Thayer IN MEMORY OF MY FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE

JULY 19, 1950 ~ MAY 30, 2020

E

vin Thayer captured the lives of many famous and not-so-famous Houstonians for decades with a photography career that was legendary. From his notable Millennium Maker’s photography coffee table book depicting the heart and soul of Houston, to the family portraits hanging above the hearth in many homes, Evin was respected for his talent, creativity and love of his craft. Not only was he a great artist, he was eternally community-minded, always giving back to charities through sharing his gifts and knowledge.

To My Friend Evin, When I ventured into the intimidating world of publishing, it was by happenstance, not by plan. I had no skills or experience but just enough belief in my ability to work for the sake of all animals that I went forward and jumped in with all four feet. I struggled, I made mistakes, I learned, I worked hard and progress came little by little. It wasn’t until you, the famed photographer of Houston, offered to work with me that BIG positive changes began to happen. I truly couldn’t believe that a talented icon like you would be willing to partner with me and my small but growing magazine (which back then was printed on newspaper stock...surely not the dream of any accomplished photographer!). You believed in me and my mission and when you shared with me that you saw PetTalk’s potential, that single message was the wind beneath my wings. From that day forward, we soared together. As we created project after project, our working relationship grew strong and respectful. You liked to quip, “You never know what crazy, unconventional thing Michelle will come up with for me to photograph.” Your comment was framed with that familiar chuckle and a twinkle in your eye that said, “AND, I love every minute of it.” I would smile and assure you that I would never allow you to be bored…and so it went. We photographed a therapy horse swimming in a suburban backyard pool; a groomer reenacting the Juicy Couture AD with 3 colored Westies, 17 puppies, 3 birds (including one in her hair) and a baby alligator; 7 small dogs living in their own 3 bedroom wing of a home replete with sitting perches for them to see the world outside; numerous athletes including the Astros Players and Pets Calendar, 3 sitting Mayors, Texas A&M Mascot Reveille (twice), socialites in their vast River Oaks mansions, and the creme de la creme, First Lady Barbara Bush. We traveled to Austin to photograph John Paul DeJoria and were rewarded with his infamous Patron Platinum tequila; we were challenged with photographing Billy Gibbons in an empty room backstage at Stafford Centre and you handled it with your usual aplomb; we laughed at my astonishment that, during a photoshoot with Lee Majors, I was lint-rolling his leg to remove cat hair–I never could have imagined I would touch the 6 million dollar man!; We giggled at the giraffe that went a bit too far trying to eat the lettuce I acciden-

46

tally dropped down the opening of my shirt; you would forever roll your eyes when I asked you to make some miracle happen, like the time I asked you to make a dog appear to be gazing up at a full moon with realistic shadowing, in studio of course; we giggled in the editing room at some of the “unfortunate” shots taken during photoshoots that only our eyes would ever see; we debated politics, shared family stories, and you were always a wealth of knowledge for me to learn about Houston’s history, given that I am not a Texan. I came to rely on your eye when trying to decide on a cover and I knew I could always count on you to listen to any crazy plan I came up with and you would do your best to execute it. You never complained, you were always on time, you were the consummate professional who was able to talk to anyone at any level and make them feel comfortable. And more importantly, you relentlessly gave back to the community by supporting many charities, hosting events and donating your talents. You supported my work like no other and for that gift, I am eternally grateful. After a few years of working together, you invited me to your birthday party and that’s when I knew we could add the word friend to the description of our relationship. I met your closest friends and your wonderful partner Ken. We had earned one another’s trust. But it wasn’t until you practically had to give me CPR in the car after First Lady Barbara Bush’s photoshoot and interview, that your words told me I had also earned your respect. I sat in the backseat, finally able to let out all of the fear and tension I had been holding on to in advance of the interview of a lifetime and you turned to me and said, “Michelle, I have to tell you something. I’ve photographed many famous people and I’ve been in this business for decades and what you just did is remarkable. The top journalists in the country have been unable to get First Lady Barbara Bush to sit for a cover but you did it. That was a total coup.” I never forgot that moment that you essentially told me you respected my work and as an untrained journalist and publisher, that meant a great deal to my confidence and sense of accomplishment. Now you are gone and I feel your absence in my work. I can no longer bounce ideas around with you, laugh with you and yes, even cry with you. I know I was blessed to have worked together for 15 years but I sure would love to have had more. Goodbye for now my friend,

HOLIDAY GATHERINGS

T

Planning a Pet-Safe day he holidays can be fun for pets but they can also be stressful and even harmful. Here are some tips to help you have a safe holiday with

your pets! House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercise while you're busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a play or petting session, making sure your pet feels secure and safe. Medications: Make sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped up and packed away. While we are talking medications, if you travel with your pet(s), remember to pack any medications they will need, and look up the number to the nearest emergency veterinarian. A Room of Their Own: Give your pet his or her own quiet space to retreat to— complete with fresh water and a place to

snuggle. Shy pups and cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case, or in a separate room away from the action. Foods: The holiday seasons are filled with wonderful aromas and tempting treats that are bound to generate interest from our furry friends. While there are a

few foods (white meat turkey is a great treat) that are safe to share with your pet, many dangerous foods lurk in the holiday kitchen. Keep tempting foods that could potentially be harmful such as fatty foods, sugar-free desserts, yeast dough or bones away from pets. Other holiday foods that pose dangers include: macadamia nuts, chocolate, coffee/caffeine, onions/chives/garlic, grapes/raisins. Decorations: Did you know that live tree water can be problematic for pets as it can contain fertilizers, molds and bacteria? Just a few drinks can make your dog or cat extremely ill. To keep your pets safe if you have a live tree, invest in a pet-proof stand. And while we are talking trees, if your pets have a high interest in that giant object that has suddenly appeared in your home, aim for plastic ornaments, skip the metal ornament hooks, leave the tinsel off the tree and be careful with your lights, both as a choking hazard and also as a source of electricity that can cause a harmful shock if cords are chewed. Lights are often better left off the lower branches. Not only can your pet get tangled up in the lights, but they can also cause burns on both cats and dogs if they become entangled. Keep pine needles swept up if you have a live tree and remember that holly and mistletoe can be toxic. Poinsettias can be troublesome as well. And as always, no matter the time of year, flameless candles are the way to go when pets are around. We wish you and your pets a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS Gift Ideas For Your Pet

A

s the holiday season approaches, family’s may be thinking about what to get their beloved pets this year. I have listed some gift ideas perfect for senior pets but younger pets may also enjoy. A pet massage from a certified small animal massage practitioner is a great way for your pet to relax. These massages are great for older pets who have built up muscle tension due to arthritis, stress, or over exertion. Similar to people, pet massages allow for the tension in muscles to relax, resulting in less pain. There are practitioners who offer these massages in your home or in a clinic. In the Houston area, many can be found via an internet search. In my experience, the majority of pets respond well to these massages, even if they do not love being touched by a veterinarian. Most pets will relax, stretch, and take a nap.

Special treats and snacks are also a great way to surprise your pet. Many local pet stores have a great selection of tasty, exotic treats. Their staff are also very knowledgeable about what is healthy and appropriate for your pet if they have any medical conditions. If you are ever unsure if something is suitable for your pet, check with your veterinarian. Another option is to make homemade pet cookies. You can find many recipes online, and this is a great option to make a batch and share with friends. If you are having a holiday party, consider making doggie bags for your guests as they leave containing treats for their pets at home. As our pets age, arthritis plays a part in many of their lives. A brand new orthopedic or soft padded bed can offer a large amount of comfort to their joints and allow a perfect sleep. Dogs and cats alike LOVE having a new place to make their own. Some cats love the largest dog beds and large dogs can fit onto smaller spaces than expected. Crib mattresses make great beds for large or giant breed dogs. Surprising them with a new comfy place to lay works as a gift and improve their

quality of life. Finally, a great gift could even be just a day dedicated to them. Whether this be a trip to the beach, a trip to the park, or an outing for a pupachino, dedicating time to your pet away from the stresses of everyday life can be fulfilling for the entire family. This may be directed more towards our dog pets but cats can sometimes enjoy the fresh air and a change of scenery. As this hectic year comes to an end, remember to celebrate with the entire family including our senior pets. Some of these gifts are obvious while others may be nontraditional but just as meaningful.

Wild about Animals A look back By: Michelle Mantor Photos: PhotographyByPrudence.com

I

education. Yes, that would be the perfect cocktail called ME. Am I all of those things? Yes and no. I surely do not possess the educational background of a formal degree in these studies. Rather, far from it. But I do have a propensity toward them all as it relates to journalism in the animal world and if I could live the 9 lives of a cat, I would aspire to each of these professions in my individual lives. But alas, I don’t have nine lives and so it’s incumbent upon me to figure out how to best use the life I know I have, this one. Prior to publishing PetTalk, I had no experience in anything to do with animals, other than having pets. My work and my skills were squarely in the business world but as I progressed through the years, my passion for animals and conservation became crystal clear. Once I had enough experience to know I’d found my passion, I haven’t doubted my work or my future endeavors for a single moment. I have to say it’s a blessing to know your passion and be able to incorporate it into your work and your life. Throughout many of the years as publisher of PetTalk, I was primarily involved with creating content for pets, mostly dogs, cats, small mammals, and occasionally other species like horses or reptiles, always with a mission of educating the

public about proper care. From fundraisers to adoption events to photoshoots and more, I had tons of fun with all sorts of creatures. And, I learned a lot! By creating content or editing content, I was fortunate to be exposed to a great deal of information about various types of animals and sometimes I even got lucky enough to interview experts, which was another exciting opportunity to learn. Eventually, I came to realize that my appreciation for animals was growing and I not only wanted to help domestic animals, I wanted to promote the well-being of wildlife as well. Through my work, I learned more and more about how incredible each of God’s creatures are…their design, instinct, adaptation, and intelligence are attributes that makes each species truly special. For those of you that agree, you also understand that to keep these creatures in our ecosystem, we must educate others regarding their value and what steps are needed to ensure their longevity on the planet. What I have come to know for sure is this: if people LOVE something, they will work to save it. This is a concept that many of the great conservationists understand and it is this very concept that makes part of the argument for zoos to exist–if we don’t know anything about a koala bear and have never seen one, we might not care if it exists. I believe the same argument applies ro factory farmed animals and that if people could witness the abuse, they would take a stand. As a journalist, it’s my job to bring this information to the forefront and work hard to

educate the audience on whatever subject I’m writing about. As I researched and created content, I knew I wanted to offer more information about wildlife conservation and environmental conservation as part of PetTalk’s platform. Through the Houston Zoo, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have access to some of the top conservationists in the world and to have upclose encounters with some of the most amazing species that inhabit our planet. From lions, cheetahs, elephants, and okapi to sloths, sea lions, tortoises and more, I've had the pleasure of meeting some great creatures!

It's one thing to have a civilized encounter with a species via the zoo, but quite another to save it. Protecting endangered species from extinction is one daunting task, as I discovered through some of my interviews with top conservationists. One interview that really made an impression on me as it relates to just what it takes to protect wild animals was my interview with two of the leading lion conservationists in the world who live “off-the-grid” lifestyles in Africa. They were visiting the Houston Zoo to collaborate with the zoo on their conservation projects. Dr. Colleen Beggs was working on the Niassa Lion Project in Mozambique and Dr. Amy Dickman was working on a Saving Lions project

in Tanzania. Through our conversation, I was reminded that nothing is as simple as it seems. They detailed the problems they face in saving lions including the obvious like loss of habitat and the more complicated issues of human/ wildlife conflict as humans and wildlife struggle for resources and space. Digging into the issue, they detailed some of the threats to lions that include villagers having poor animal husbandry of their livestock, hence the livestock being killed by lions and the villagers in turn wanting rid of the lions–something sturdy fencing could solve; or, occasionally there are killings of humans by lions, again fueling the desire to get rid of lions but in almost all cases the killing could have been avoided by actions of the humans. As an example, the villager might lie down to sleep in the tall grasses which led to their demise rather than finding a safer place to rest. I mention this interview because it encapsulates so much of why I write this column monthly and donate space to wildlife organizations to submit content as well. The issues at hand for saving endangered species, saving our oceans, and saving our planet are both considerable and arduous but not insurmountable. For the sake of our future, even if you are not an animal enthusiast, we have to take steps to create a world we can live in together with respect for all sentient beings, otherwise our world will be forever tainted, possibly destroyed. We cannot ignore that oceanic wildlife is being harmed through our dumpling of plastic or that the ecosystem is beautifully designed to be in balance between humans, plants and animals and if that balance is overwrought, we would

face water shortages, lack of food (think honey bees), lack of oxygen and have infestations of species that cause harm in great numbers if left unchecked by other species that have been destroyed. This environmental phenomenon is known as "trophic cascade". For example, the changes in vegetation that occur when the herbivore population is allowed to rise unchecked can change the frequency and intensity of wildfires. And that's just one tiny example of the importance of keeping our planet healthy. On this 20th anniversary of PetTalk, I pledge that I am more committed than ever to bring you relevant conservation information in each issue so that we can work together for change.... because extinction is forever!

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo or the TWRC Wildlife Center. This issue, we highlight the zoo's 100 years of animal conservation. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

F

or the past five years, PetTalk Magazine has provided an outlet for the Houston Zoo to share its incredible wildlife-saving stories taking place here in Texas and around

the world in majestic places like the island of Madagascar, the mountains of Rwanda, and the rainforests of Borneo. Stories highlighting the incredible work by in-the-field conservationists

have inspired Houstonians to come together to take action in their own ways to help save animals, like elephants, gorillas, sea turtles, and so many more, in the wild. As PetTalk celebrates and reflects in its 20-year anniversary, the Zoo also has a special anniversary coming up – 100 years! It started with a bison named Earl. In 1922, the Houston Zoo first opened in Hermann Park. Then the Zoo grew, and grew, and grew some more. And now the Zoo looks to its future. In 2018, the Houston Zoo announced major plans that will transform the zoo over the next 20 years. This new master plan will reconfigure the zoo into experiential zones that highlight wildlife and ecosystems found in Texas and around the world. With conservation messaging integrated throughout these zones, guests will leave the Zoo inspired to take action to save animals in the wild. The first phase of this plan is

currently underway and continues over the next few years. The Keeping Our World Wild: Centennial Campaign is set to be completed by 2022, just in time for the Zoo’s 100-year celebration. Every year leading to the zoo’s centennial, an exciting new chapter will open for guests to explore, and nearly half of the Zoo’s acreage will be redeveloped by 2022. These reimagined areas include the Heart of the Zoo, South America’s Pantanal, and the Galapagos Islands, including a renovated main entrance. Heart of the Zoo, which was completed in May 2019, celebrates the biodiversity of Texas, enhances guest amenities, and sets the stage for a more navigable zoo. The Cypress Circle Café has transformed into a signature gathering place and the Kathrine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands exhibit, featuring alligators, bald eagles, and whooping cranes, engages visitors in the zoo’s conservation programs with

local species. Recently completed in October and now open to the public is South America’s Pantanal. This new exhibit explores the legendary tropical wetlands of Brazil, home to South America’s greatest concentration of wildlife, including jaguars, monkeys, giant river otters, capybaras, birds, anacondas, giant anteaters and tapirs. The Zoo partners with on-the-ground conservationists in South and Central America to study and protect these species. This exhibit

will strengthen the Zoo’s conservation investment by offering visitors a more immersive, engaging experience of this ecosystem. Finally, in 2022, a first-of-itskind Galapagos exhibit, plus enhancements to the main entrance and central public spaces, will open to the public. This unique Galapagos exhibit will feature sea lions, sharks, sea turtles, giant tortoises, and other iconic species. No place better illustrates the wonders of unique species, the delicate balance of ecosystems,

or the pressing need for conservation action than the Galapagos Islands. This exhibit will immerse visitors in the Islands’ starkly beautiful environment and highlight the zoo’s ongoing field work with giant tortoises, birds, and marine animals. The Houston Zoo aims to redefine what a zoo can be with beautiful and immersive habitats, compelling guest experiences, and an unyielding commitment to saving wildlife. Together, we will keep our world wild.
