Tribune Media Services ews travels fast in Washington, but understanding takes a lot longer. It isn’t news that Americans are unhappy with the way things are going. George Bush suffers record low approval. Eighty percent of the country thinks the economy is bad and getting worse. Most want to get out of the costly and endless mess in Iraq. Most are struggling with incomes that can’t keep up with soaring prices for gas, food, electricity, health care. One in nine homes is now underwater, worth less than its mortgage. Every politician has learned that people want “change.” But understanding of what that means takes longer. Americans are looking at a country in serious trouble. We are looking for leaders -- not politicians -- who can bring us together to get things done. This isn’t rocket science, but it seems

PG 4

‘The Change You Deserve’ hard to absorb in Washington. Consider Republicans in Congress. They lost big time in 2006. Twenty-nine incumbents took a look at the polls and decided it was a good time to retire. They have suffered stunning defeats in special elections in former Speaker Dennis Hastert’s district in Illinois and, amazingly, in a Louisiana district previously won by Republicans with overwhelming majorities. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warns that they are headed for a “real disaster” if they don’t change what they are doing. Again, pretty obvious stuff. But Rep. John Boehner, the Republican minority leader, clearly doesn’t get it. He has put out a slide show reassuring his troops that they can do well this fall. Most of it is about partisan mechanics -- raise money, contribute to the party, coordinate efforts, help one another out. But when it gets to talking about the country and what Americans want, it is clueless. Beohner sees the election as a marketing challenge. “Our brand is under repair,” he says, “but we can bring it back.” How will they do this? Boehner figures Republicans can win this fall by becoming the party of “change.” In a memo sent to every member of the Republican caucus, he wrote “To the American people, we say that Republicans

May 15 - May 21, 2008

will deliver the change you deserve.” He’s intent on rolling out a new agenda this week and next that will capture that mantle. Huh? Republicans in Congress, backed by President Bush’s veto threats, have obstructed virtually every reform since Democrats took control in 2007. They have filibustered against providing health care to children, against ending the war in Iraq, against ending subsidies to big oil and investing in renewable energy, against negotiating lower prices on prescription drugs. In recent weeks, Boehner has led his party in a policy of delay and distraction, forcing the House to vote repeatedly on motions to adjourn simply to delay votes. Republicans even switched votes on honoring mothers on Mother’s Day, simply to put sand in the gears.

Now after months and months of this, Boehner says a new agenda will “rebrand” Republicans as the party of change. Perhaps Americans are as dense as Boehner thinks. Perhaps just a little new paint, a bumper sticker slogan, a show agenda, a bitterly partisan attack politics can once more draw the lines, and save Republican incumbents from defeat this fall. But this year, Americans are tuned in. They know things aren’t working. They are looking for leaders, not used-platform salesmen. They know that special interests and partisan posturing have locked up Washington. And they just might not be ready to accept the party of obstruction’s electionyear conversion as the party of change. You can write to the Rev. Divorce360 Investigates: Divorced with a College-Bound Student?

By Casey Clark-Ney Special to Style Magazine

A

ny parent can get confused when applying for federal student aid for a college-bound student. For divorced parents, however, it can be more difficult. In order for a student to get financial aid from the United States Department of Education (EOD), his or her parents must fill out a Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When the student’s parents are divorced, the rules for the form can be tricky. Among the most commonly asked questions for divorced parents with college-age students seeking federal financial aid: 1. Which parent should fill out the financial application forms for a college-bound student? Sigler said “Families will sometimes, mistakenly, include the income information for both legal parents. The FAFSA is requesting information from just one parent....” Sigler said. Kantrowitz said the parent who fills out the form isn’t necessarily the parent who has “primary custody” as the court defines it. It should be, he said, the parent the child lives with most often is the one who should fill out the forms. In situations where parents split custody 50-50, “...the financial aid office will likely choose whichever parent has the highest income.” In the event that a student’s parent hasn’t maintained contact with the child, Kantrowtiz said he or she is simply not the custodial parent. “Only one parent’s household income information

is included on the FAFSA, so the student would likely use the information for the parent who is still around,” Sigler added. One answer does not fit all situations. Generally, there is probably little impact on the student’s financial aid.” 2. If you’re not divorced yet, how should the forms be filled out? Not all parents are officially divorced when it comes time to file the application for student aid. Both Kantrowitz and Sigler said if a couple is separated and planning to divorce, they are considered divorced in terms of financial aid. “If the separation is with the intent to divorce, and the parents are living in separate locations, there is no difference in qualifying for aid. The reason is because it is appropriate to list only the information for the custodial parent’s household,” Sigler said. Kantrowitz, however, warns that co-habituating parents who claim they are separated do not count as separated. “If the husband is living in the basement and the wife upstairs, that doesn’t count … it has to be two separate residences,” he said. “That is often a misconception, and the schools will generally be suspicious if the separate residences is something temporary is like a hotel room.” 3. What happens if a parent gets divorced while the student is attending college during the school year? In some situations, Sigler said, the student’s parents may divorce during the school year. “If a separation or divorce is one

of those unexpected situations that occurs and the FAFSA was already completed with both parents’ income information, the family should work directly with the financial aid office at the student’s school to see what adjustments can be made to the FAFSA,” she said. “The school will determine if it is appropriate to change the data, and the school will actually make the changes.” 4. What happens if a parent gets divorced during the school year? According to Kantrowitz a popular trend among divorce cases is to establish a college support agreement, which determines what, if any, financial aid the student will receive from either party. Kantrowitz said an agreement could range from a pre-determined amount of money to pay for tuition, living expenses or other college-related bills. When a custodial parent fills out a FAFSA, however, he or she is required to list any money received as part of a college support agreement. This money is considered like any form of income. 5. Does it matter if the student was claimed as a dependent on tax returns? “How the student is or is not claimed on the parents’ taxes is not a factor in determining which parent’s information is to be included... “ on the application. “The reason is because the divorce settlement might specify who gets to claim the child as a dependent or parents may choose to claim the child as a dependent on alternating years,”

Sigler said. And while many parents read the FAFSA instructions accurately and only provide one of the parent’s household information, if taxes are filed jointly, some parents get confused. As an example, Sigler said: “The FAFSA will ask for the amount on XYZ line of the tax return. Frequently (the parent filling out the form) will remember to exclude the ex-spouse’s income where it asks for the father’s income and the mother’s income, but they forget to also adjust the AGI (adjusted gross income) and taxes paid amounts to reflect the portion relating to the custodial parent’s income.” 6. If a parent remarries, must he or she refile a federal aid application? It depends. All of the questions on the application -- not just the income questions -- are used to calculate the expected family contribution and the amount of aid a student receives, Sigler said. So the number of people in a household, the number of dependents in college, the age of the older parent or stepparent in the household and even the state of residence can im-

pact the expected family contribution. The lower the family contribution, the more eligble a student is for aid. That expected family contribution “may go up or down after the parent remarries,” Sigler said. To find out if you should refile, check out this federal aid calculator called FAFSA4caster at http://www. fafsa4caster.ed.gov/. 7. Should a stepparent’s income be considered in the application? “The (custodial) parent’s and the stepparent’s income information is to be included...” Sigler said. Why? Federal college aid officials consider all the resources sustaining a parent’s household, which includes a stepparent’s income, even though the stepparent doesn’t contribute to the student’s education. A prenuptial agreement between the custodial aprent and the stepparent has no bearing on the application. “Two individuals cannot make an agreement that is binding on the third party,” Kantrowitz said. “Both incomes and assets are going to be considered.” For more informaiton go to www.divorce360.com.

A Kocktail with Kiana BEVYLINE DODSON

GOD IS HER CEO By Kiana Dancie

orn in 1944 to very poor parents, Ms. Bevyline Joyce (Mamou) Dodson was a special child. She was blessed with a gift that many of us have to work extremely hard to polish! Ms. Dodson’s ability to write poetry was noticed very early on. It was encouraged that she enroll in the journalism program to help sharpen her skills. I met her a few years back when I was recording a TV show here in Houston. She walked up to me and touched my shoulder and said, “Child you have a gift that you should share! What the Lord has in store for you is around the corner! Be prepared for your blessings!” I was floored! I had never met this lady a day in my life! So, you can imagine it was very scary to have someone that you have never seen before tell you such a thing! As I got to know her, I realized that she was able to prophesize. She was able to see things that my young, immature eyes could not see. While spending time with her, she would often say that God is her CEO. In her many years she has written numerous plays, short stories and poems. Her works are published in multiple books and magazines. She has had request as far as the United Kingdom to publish her works! I was given the pleasure to read one if her poems and I was moved by the following that was inspired by Mother’s Day. “Mother’s Day Proclamation” “A Women of Virtue” Based on Proverbs 31:3-31 Mothers were always in God’s plan. We are honest workers; we are in His hand. We may have to get food from afar, sometimes we walk to the store, even borrow a car. A mother wakes early, while others sleep. She prays to God, for every lost sheep. A Mother will tuck her kids in

bed; she will even rub their aching head. A mother reaches her hand to the poor. We know that God is the open door. She will rejoice in the time to come, strength and honor will follow her home. Her children call her blessed. We all think our mothers are the best. A mother that fears God is praised, Let “Virtue” speak, because of Jesus, we are raised. Kiana: “WOW! What inspires you to write you poetry?” Dodson: “God’s given inspiration to see people, places and things the way they are!” Kiana: “What’s next for you?” Dodson: “My next project is my DVD. This is based on 23rd Psalms. The title is ‘The Root of the Branches of Life.

Due out before the end of the year! Keep looking up! It’s coming!” Kiana: “I know you refer to yourself as Christ Elected Orphan, What is your church home?” Dodson: “I am a blessed member of South Union Missionary Baptist Church. 3550 Lydia St. Houston, 77021. Under the leadership of Pastor Michael V. Smith, an anointed man of God. For the past 10 years, his teachings have helped me come out of my shell to share my gift!” Kiana: “What’s your favorite Kocktail? Dodson: “Grape juice with a twist of Grape! LOL!” Kiana: “See you cutting up!!” Kiana: “What’s your most memorable

The company also announced further improvements in its credit education and closing guarantee programs. able homeownership for all consumers. We are particularly proud to join with Wells Fargo to ensure that the African American homebuyer is being serviced at the highest of ethical and credible levels,” said Maria Kong, NAREB’s president. “Wells Fargo recognizes that Latinos are the largest ethnic segment in the U.S., and has responded by providing bilingual and culturally-specific materials to consumers, as well as important informational programs such as today’s forum,” said Rebecca Gallardo-Serrano, NAHREP’s chairman. At the forum, Wells Fargo spoke with real estate professionals about the state of the current market and how customers can best be helped. The company also announced its groundbreaking Wells Fargo Closing Guarantee(SM) and Steps to Success(SM) programs would be expanded to be more inclusive. The Wells Fargo Closing Guarantee(SM) -- formerly offered to customers financing the purchase of existing real estate using standard products, has been expanded to include all qualified purchase products including those for new construction. The guarantee states that Wells Fargo will close a customer’s loan on or before

the closing date stated in the original purchase contract or will refund the borrower an amount equal to the first month’s principal and interest payment. In the current environment, it is important for buyers, sellers, and their real estate agents to know that the loan will close and will close on time. Steps To Success(SM) -- is a free, bilingual credit management program that will be expanded in early summer to include all first-time homebuyers and FHA customers. The program provides financial education, access to automatic mortgage payment options, and information about banking products that can help make money management routine and effective. For all program participants, our goal is to be proactive in helping them improve or maintain their own financial situation. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage is the nation’s No. 1 retail mortgage lender and servicer of home mortgages. As a division of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., it has a local presence in more than 2,300 mortgage stores and banking stores, and serves customers nationwide through its call centers, Internet presence and wholesale lending operations. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage services loans for 7.9 million customers.

As Joy, a commodities trader, Diaz must remain likable while scrambling over coworkers to get a promotion, lying to her boss, or scheming to cheat Jack (Kutcher) out of his half of a $3 million jackpot. Jack, an unkempt bachelor and good time Charlie, has less chance of besting Joy than he does of discerning good advice from an unending supply of ding-a-ling drivel offered by Steve (Rob Corddry), Jack’s bachelor best friend. The set up has the couple meet in Vegas where they drink themselves into a stupor and awaken to find Joy sporting a cheap pair’o-dice wedding ring. While bickering over the reasons a marriage between them could never work, Jack and Joy hit a jackpot each feels entitled to keep. Back home in New York City, Judge Whopper (Dennis Miller) freezes the winnings and

sentences the pair to six months hard marriage. To ensure they are following the provisions of this extraordinary court order, Jack and Joy must attend weekly counseling sessions with Dr. Twitchell (Queen Latifah). Their sessions plod along, failing to take advantage of the pair’s humorous predicament. light. The SCENTPORT Night-Light was created with an automatic sensor that activates a soft glowing light the moment a room begins to darken. Like the original SCENTPORT, the new Night-Light fills your home with a continuous fragrance that never overwhelms or suffocates the senses, but rather infuses the space with Slatkin’s signature scents. The luxurious aroma and gentle glow create the perfect atmosphere for drifting off, but also light the way for late

night snacks or bathroom trips. The SCENTPORT Night-Light is ideal for parents as well, as it helps young children face their fear of the dark while providing aromatherapeutic benefits for a better night’s sleep. When Harry Slatkin introduced his first line of fragranced candles almost two decades ago, he single-handedly created a new lifestyle category - home fragrance. After creating his innovative SCENTPORT, Slatkin sought to design an even more atmospheric, practical product to transform the energy of a space. The result? The SCENTPORT Night-Light, the Home Fragrance industry’s smartest plug-in yet. Look for the newest fragrance from Slatkin, SCENTPORT Refills in Pineapple Orchid. The tropical blend of sun ripened Sugared Pineapple is infused with the essence of White Orchid and Jasmine.

Un “Cover”

The Tragedies of the Black Community By Jo-Carolyn Goode Editor-at-Large

S

hots rang out one lonely New Year’s Eve night in Philadelphia leaving an entertainer in a pool of his blood, dead. This should have been an open and shut case for Detective Hicks, at least, that is what the assistant district attorney thought. At the scene of the crime police found DNA from the earrings the suspect allegedly left as well as her fingerprints all over the murder weapon. She had motive, opportunity, and no alibi. The only problem with the prime suspect Valeria Maas was that the evidence said one thing, but she said the evidence was wrong because she was innocent. Could this be the ultimate set-up or a string of coincidences? The deeper the cover, the darker the secret. Producer and director Bill Duke brings to light subjects who are often swept under the rug and who cause the African American community to be ailing. In this complex tale of betrayal, deceit, and infidelity, Valerie Maas is living the dream life with a husband on an advanced career path who loves her and a daughter whom

both she and her husband love. When the family makes the big move from Atlanta to Philadelphia, Valerie is so happy she could burst. Old feelings and relationships churn and make Valerie’s dreams turn to nightmares causing her to question her faith, her marriage, and her being when the secrets of her husband’s double life come to fruition. I have to put a pin in it here before I give too much away. Just know that this DVD is a must-see from start to finish. The real story will not be known until the end of the movie. Leon describes it best, “It is a murder mystery with a hell of a twist.” Leon plays Ryan Chambers in “Cover.” Ryan is a singer and college

friend of Dutch Maas. One naturally wants to see Ryan as the bad guy in the film, but Leon says Ryan is actually a victim. “I am someone who is hurting inside too,” Leon said of his character. “The most challenging part of this role was finding that this character had a heart and realizing that he is a human being who has feelings and emotions.” “Cover” is not the only movie for Leon in 2008. He also stars in “Capers.” In this film Leon lets his comedic talents shine. Directed by Julian Kheel, “Capers” also stars Danny Masterson. Leon leads a double life. Not like one of the characters of the DVD, but of an actor and singer. When he is not mak-

ing a crowd think about the message of him in films, he is making them rock to the beat of his music with his reggae soul band, Leon and the Peoples. Still basking in the success of their debut CD “The Road Less Traveled,” the 2007 International Reggae and World Music Award nominee is becoming one of New York’s hottest rising bands. This soul stirring music is Leon muse to keeping him sane in the insane world of acting. Their next appearance will be at the AIDS Walk in New York Sunday, May 18, 2008, as the headline act. Find out more information about them at www.leonandthepeoples.net and on myspace.com/leonandthepeoples. Find out more information about Leon at www. justleon.com. “Cover” stars Vivica A. Chip, Chip Hooray! for Chocolate Chip Day

an you imagine life without chocolate chips? Neither can I! The inspiration of so many dreamy desserts, these semi-sweet morsels are sweetly commemorated on May 15, Chocolate Chip Day. Take a sweet page from history and celebrate the all-American chocolate baking classic and the creative baker behind the chip. When Ruth Wakefield, an accomplished home baker and Toll House Inn owner, added chopped Nestle chocolate bars to her butter cookies, a classic cookie—and the Nestle Toll House morsel— were born. In the 1930s, when Ruth agreed to let Nestle to print her Toll House Cookie recipe on its bars of chocolate, Nestle offered to supply Ruth with all the chocolate she wanted for baking for the rest of her life. How’s that for a sweet deal: a supply of chocolate for life! That’s one of the whimsical bits of the history of the chocolate morsels which are used daily in kitchens across America and around the globe. While I bake a batch of perfect, classic chocolate chip cookies to fill the cookie jar for May 15, I’ll be inspired to make a chocolate chip dessert suitable for Mother’s Day. Enjoy the fascinating history of the birth of the chocolate chip, the Toll House Inn, and tips and delectable recipes for using this all-American chip off the chocolate block at www.VeryBestBaking.com.
