Grayson County Conservatives (Continued from page 1)

Their main areas of concern are human trafficking, immigration, election integrity, unconstitutional mandates, vaccinations, and overall corruption in government. The leader of the movement locally is Shelley Luther, who resides in Luella and is challenging Reggie Smith for his House 62 seat. She has the support of not only Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, but even the flamethrower Ted Nugent. Luther gained national fame in 2020 when she kept her hair salon in Dallas open during the COVID lockdowns and ended up in jail because of it. In March of last year, Luther had a brain aneurysm and nearly lost her life. Her speech Tuesday night at the Green Growler in Denison was only her second time speaking in public since her numerous surgeries. Luther began her political career in 2020 when she ran for Senate District 30 seat when she won the primary, but eventually lost the run-off to Drew Springer. This is not the first time Luther has run for the House District 62 seat against Smith. She did so back in 2022 and received 10,912 votes compared to Smith’s 15,510. She feels this time she’ll be able to flip the voters on the same message. “I didn’t have to change anything (on my flyer) because they didn’t do anything!” said Luther which brought laughter and cheers. “I started noticing what he (Smith) was not doing. It’s

a

embarrassing. You have to hire regular people that will actually come back and look you in the eye and say, ‘I did what you wanted.’” Luther said that the legislative priorities the elected officials make are the same each year that everyone wants and gets behind, but those priorities never get accomplished. “They want it to be that way,” said Luther who pointed out that Smith was the chair of the election integrity committee. She claimed Smith obtained that position from Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan who heavily contributed to his re-election campaign.. “Ken Paxton told me that he had 900 voter fraud lawsuits in Texas alone and they had to drop them because they didn’t fix it. Our Attorney General’s hands are completely tied.” Other local candidates gave their cases for their races including Grayson County Commissioner Precinct 1 candidates Terry Thomas and Scott Renfro. Josh Marr, a candidate in the same race could not be there due to illness. Thomas, a local realtor from Van Alstyne, led off by saying he was running because he wanted to be a part of the growth that is exploding in South Grayson County. “Everyone thinks that the County Commissioner job is all about roads and bridges, but that’s not all that we do.” said Thomas. “We need to make (Continued on page 3)

sure we have someone in place that is a business-minded person. Thomas said that he is brutally honest and speaks before he thinks which he says makes him not a ‘yes man.’ “One thing that I will do for you guys is I will fight for you, and I will do right by my precinct and everyone that lives in it, and I will make the best decisions I can make based on the information that I have. I’m honest to a fault and I’m not a quitter.” Scott Renfro, running for the same position, is a fourth generation farmer and rancher and president of the Grayson County Texas Farm Bureau board. Renfro served for nine years on the Howe ISD Board of Trustees and in his second term on the Tom Bean ISD Board of Trustees. “You’d be surprised how much land is being bought and sold (in South Grayson County) for development,” said Renfro. “To sit there and see some of that land that we farmed for 80-plus years—that’s my biggest thing is trying to do what I can. I’m just a servant at heart and doing what I can to be a good steward of land. I can be a good steward of this county. I have the means and I feel like I can do it.” Renfro says he has the expertise to maintain a budget and keep the taxes low. “As we get more people coming in, that tax rate is going to keep getting lower and lower which is good for everybody,” said Renfro. “It takes a little bit of business savvy to be able to do that.” Brent Lawson, running for Grayson County GOP Chair said that he feels that many of their leaders either have never read the Republican platform or simply do not agree with it. “The lack of their conviction has left an opening for the definition and what it means to be a Republican to be made for American society by people who have nothing but contempt for our principles,” said Lawson as he pointed out Democrats, the media, academia, and pop culture. “They are taking ownership of the definition of what it means to be a Republican and they are leading generations of Americans away from our roots with lies.” Lawson said that most citizens proba-

bly weren’t aware of who their Grayson County Precinct Chair is or that it even existed. He said that was due to the lack of leadership. He said that it’s time to make the precinct chairs the focal part of the Republican Party in their communities and says that he will be the chairman that will be involved in the day-to-day activities. “The left has targeted very heavily the younger generation of Republicans. As chairman, I will work with organizations such as the Young Republicans of Texas to promote clubs and activities for the younger generations. We will stop allowing the left to define what it means to be a Republican for Grayson County younger generation. We must be more than silent observers in the cultural debate of our time.” Jace Yarbrough, who is running for the Senate District 30 seat, is a seventh generation Texan and is a conservative attorney whose law firm is currently suing the City of San Antonio on behalf of the Texas Right to Life. He says the city set aside $500,000 of taxpayer funds in September to transfer young pregnant women to pro-abortion states for the sole purpose of abortion. “Abortion is a criminal activity, and no government entity can designate taxpayer dollars for criminal activity,” Yarbrough stated. He is a reservist in the Air Force who has stated previously that the Department of Defense has been taken over by the left that is pushing a cultural agenda in our military which undermines our effectiveness and readiness to defend our nation and win our wars. That statement had him reprimanded from his unit and ended his military career. He is now in a lawsuit with the Air Force which is in the Eastern District of Texas in front of Judge Amos Mazzant. He filed on the last day possible because he says the district didn’t have a conservative in the race and he feels like he is the alternative offer for the conservative voices in Senate District 30. His competitors will be Denton County GOP Chairman Brent Hagenbuch, Cody Clark, and Carrie de Moor. Hagenbuch has lawsuits filed against him for claims he doesn’t live in the district. He was also censured by the Denton County GOP earlier this year for donating to a Democratsupported local candidate. Early voting begins on February 20 and the voting date is March 5.

City sales tax at $47,934 Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations for January, 3.3 percent more than in January 2023. These allocations are based on sales made in November by businesses that report tax monthly.

current fiscal year beginning in October, Howe has brought in $205,934.49 compared to $199,098.35 at this time a year ago. The city retains 75 percent of that total which equates to $154,450.87.

In Howe, the monthly total was $47,922.76 which is down 8.03 percent from January of 2023. For the

The other 25 percent of the January $47,934.58 is $11,983.65 which belongs to the Howe Community Facilities Development Corporation (HCFDC). For the year, the HCFDC has accumulated $51,483.62.

A 3-pointer by Anthony Lowder separated the two teams early in the first period and Howe commanded the final three periods. Leonard was able to shave nine points off the lead when they went into full court press mode in the fourth quarter, but still, the Dogs were able to swing it back around for the 7-point win. Jacob Campbell led Howe with 24 points and also snagged five rebounds and had eight assists. Kaleb Taylor had his biggest scoring night of the season with 13 while Noah Riley also contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Parker Dunnihoo had eight points and four rebounds. Other scorers were Anthony Lowder and Cooper Jones who each totaled three. It was a similar story on Tuesday night in Blue Ridge as Howe jumped out to

But he made up for it in the second half with 12 points in the third period and another seven in the fourth to finish with a team-high 24 points on the evening. Dunnihoo finished with eight points while Riley chipped in seven and nine rebounds. Other scorers were Kaleb Taylor (6), Lowder (6), and Jones (3). Each team had strengths and excelled in their own way; even the first year team who missed going deep into the playoffs by a half-court shot. I would say this is maybe the most complete team as far as scorers and size/ positions. Though we have some shoring up to do to become the best defensive team. But I’m proud of the direction we are trending.”

dison Bond. It didn’t take long to understand that Leonard had little to offer to slow down the high post Emery Snapp which created opportunities underneath for post Presley Shockey. When Leonard tried to force the issue and began to press the Lady Bulldogs, Griffin and company breezed through it with quick passes. Howe led by 20 most of the second half. Anderson doesn’t have a set big-forbig or small-for-small rotation. She will bring in a variety of interchangeable parts throughout the game whether substituting Tori Williams and Addison Bond together or Stewart and Aubrielle West. Against Leonard, all facets of the bench played a major contributing role, and they will need to continue to do so to see postseason play. Griffin led Howe with 16 points, but Snapp had one of her best games of the year with 15. Bond also chipped in 14 points for her highest total of the season. Other scorers were Shockey (6), Stewart (4), Reese Smith (3), and Williams (2). Griffin nabbed four rebounds and three steals while Snapp

On Tuesday night, Howe pulled through a non-dramatic 45-30 win at Blue Ridge where Griffin did most of the damage with a double-double by leading Howe with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and five steals. But again, the supporting cast from starters to the bench played a big role in the outcome. Bond scored nine points while Shockey added eight points, four rebounds, and two steals. Snapp finished with six points, eight rebounds, and two steals and Smith totaled three points, five rebounds, and two steals. A Riley McCollum successful foul shot rounded out the scoring. In November, Howe hired longtime Volunteer Fire Chief Robert Maniet as the first paid chief in city history. He began on January 1. The target date for the Howe EMS services to begin is April 1, 2024. Also listed on the agenda is a new ordinance which would establish a mobile food vendor permit application, fee of $150, and provisions. The agenda also includes a budget amendment to give a more accurate depiction of revenue and expenditures after the formal tax levy amount was presented from the tax assessor’s office. Also listed is Resolution 2024-0001 which would authorize a voluntary

annexation application of property on Ponderosa Road, approving a service plan, and initiating proceedings for the city to annex a portion of Ponderosa Road for that particular strip of property. The council will then act upon a corrected plat for Connections Park before reauthorizing a lease/purchase agreement with Independent Financial for $62,999.98 for a Ford F-150 from Silsbee Ford for the police department fleet. This was initially authorized in December of 2022, but the vehicle was not available until recently. The council will also make a decision to approve or disapprove a preliminary plat for Noble Ridge’s Phase 1B. The Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z) will meet prior to the City Council at 6 pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Summit Gardens, 100 E. O’Connell Street. The P&Z will also discuss, consider, and approve the corrected final plat for Connections Park and the Noble Ridge plat.

City of Howe SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers a pre-recorded message describing the situations to a live person or an answering machine in the affected area possibly including instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will be placed to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed. The following information is required to add a telephone number into the "CodeRED" database: first and last name; address (physical address, no P.O. boxes); city; state; Zip Code; and primary phone number. The system works with cellular phones but requires a valid street address. When entering information, please fill out all of the screens because the newest data entered will replace the old data. Texas History Minute In Texas, 76 men have been awarded the Medal of Honor for their courage above and beyond the call of duty since the inception Ken Bridges of the medal. Perhaps the most recognizable of those figures from World War II was Audie Murphy. Murphy was born into a desperately poor family in Hunt County in 1925. His father abandoned the family when he was young, and he, his mother, and his sister moved between Farmersville and Greenville often for work. He quit school in the fifth grade in order to help support the family, and in 1941, his mother died. When World War II started, Murphy tried to enlist in the Marines and the navy, but both rejected him because of his short height and thin build. The army, however, accepted him in 1942. In 1943, he fought in Italy before being transferred to France in 1944. High casualties in his platoon and his own gallantry resulted in a series of promotions from private to lieutenant. On January 24, 1945, Murphy was wounded in both legs as his division held off an attack by Nazi forces near the German border. High casualties led him eventually to take command of his company. On January 26, his company came under attack by advancing Nazi troops accompanied by six German tanks. Not willing to see any more of his men injured, he ordered them to fall back to defensive positions in the nearby woods while he directed artillery against the Germans. When a tank destroyer was hit, Murphy ordered the men to safety, climbed atop the burning destroyer, and started firing its .50caliber machine gun against the Germans. For nearly an hour, he singlehandedly pinned down the Germans, killing nearly 50 enemy troops while being injured in the leg himself. He then ordered his men into a counterattack that repelled the German force, saving the day.

ed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Portions of the incident were recreated in the popular 1955 autobiographical film To Hell and Back, which starred Murphy. He was honorably discharged in 1945. As one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War II, he also earned two silver stars and two bronze stars for bravery, the Distinguished Service Cross, and three Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in combat. In spite of his own gallantry, Murphy was quick to point out the heroics of others whom he felt never got credit. "There were so many guys who should have gotten medals and never did -- guys who were killed." His fame led his to appear in more than forty movies after the war. Most of his movies were westerns. He would sometimes laugh about his acting. "I'm working under a great handicap -- no talent," he would quip. He also returned to military service in the Texas National Guard in the 1950s, eventually reaching the rank of major. While he enjoyed success as an actor and rancher after the war, the post-war years were very chaotic for Murphy. He engaged in very impulsive behavior such as addictions to gambling and problems with alcohol and prescription pain-killers and developed money problems. He also developed severe problems with anxiety, violent outbursts, and migraines. Murphy often talked about his own issues with what he called “shell shock,” a common name at the time for the condition which is more properly understood as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder today. In the 1960s, he began urging the military to take more action to help veterans cope with these symptoms. He died in a plane crash in 1971 at the age of 45. In honor of his service, the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio was dedicated in 1973, and the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum was later established in Greenville. In recent years, the military has worked to establish new programs to help combat veterans cope with PTSD issues, but it still remains a daunting problem for many veterans.

For his gallantry, Murphy was award-

Calculating the cost of being close to God We talked about taking a stand for Christ last week, but being a Christian is also a walk which in the light of scripture refers to conduct. Dr. Billy Holland Ephesians the second chapter mentions how we once walked with the world fulfilling the lust of our flesh, and Romans the sixth chapter talks about how once we are transformed by His saving power we now walk in a new spiritually transformed identity. While these passages help explain our salvation experience, what about how we are to walk after we are saved? Colossians 1:10 describes our new lifestyle as a “walk worthy of the Lord” and then we notice another road sign in Ephesians chapter five saying, “Walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Since God demands for us to seek wisdom and pray for self -discipline, we should comprehend that what we say and do speaks volumes about who we are. When we leave this world, how we lived will reveal what we believed was important. Our testimony and conduct are what everyone sees, which is why it’s so important to surrender our will to be like Christ. Many are involved with religious works, and will raise their hand when asked if they believe in God, but does doing a good deed always prove our love for Him? Can we not manage our own desires in the name of religion? So, what is the key to walking with God in this life? What is the difference between wanting Jesus as our Savior and having Christ as our Lord? Luke 6:46 sums it up, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” Since we know the Rhema Word of God penetrates our spirit, our mind, emotions, and even our bodies, this revelation has the power to change us. If we are not obeying God’s commands and following His voice, He is not our Lord. We have given our worship and love to someone or something else. In Romans 6:16 we find another sobering statement, “Do you

not comprehend that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient servants, you are loyal to the one you obey, whether you are devoted to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” There is a good reason why we should conduct a daily examination of our conscience to make sure we have not drifted away from our commitment and love for God. Each moment we are tempted and distracted to focus our attention on something other than Jesus Christ. We hardly notice this subtle persuasion from the dark side, but stop for a moment and observe. This is certainly not a game, but conduct a serious experiment and you will realize that all of us are in the middle of fierce spiritual warfare. The idea from Satan is if he can keep our thoughts occupied with anything except God, he can control us. The question is, do we care? Do we not see the danger of being led around by Satan whose mission according to John 10:10 is to kill, steal, and destroy? The good news is we have a choice about how we live as the second part of that verse says, “but Jesus has come that we might have life, and have it more abundantly.” I have two passages to share with you before we close. The first is Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” The second is found in James 4:7-8, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you doubleminded.” If we meditate on seeking and drawing near to God, we notice it demands an intentional act on our behalf to pursue with a passionate determination. Could the principle of reaping and sowing pertain here? I believe so. If God’s response to us is based on the level of our desire to know Him, then how many steps do you intend to take to meet Him? If something prevents you from embracing and giving yourself completely to Him, what is it? There is a reality within the Christian faith and a worthy consideration; we can be as close to God as we want. Dr. William Holland is a Christian minister, author, and chaplain. Trump dominates Fox News The Texas National Guard just town hall hosts and gives seized control of Eagle Pass from the #NeverTrump masterclass answer on “revenge”… Federal Government… It’s like a modern-day showdown at the O.K. Corral, but this time it’s in Eagle Pass, Texas. The face-off is between the Texas National Guard and the Biden regime. Thanks to a fully fed -up Governor Greg Abbott, Texas has now taken control of Biden’s “New Voter” invasion. As it stands now, the Border Patrol union has officially confirmed that their agents are being blocked by the Texas National Guard, and the union is actually praising Abbott for seizing control. In addition, the mayor of Eagle Pass has revealed that he too was made aware of the plans to take control of his city.

tained a presence with security points and temporary barrier in Shelby Park since 2021. The current posture is to prepare for future illegal immigrant surges and to restrict access to organizations that perpetuate illegal immigrant crossings in the park and greater Eagle Pass area.” I reached out to CBP/Border Patrol in the sector for comment hours ago – no response yet. This report is creating quite a stir online. Conservatives are thrilled to see Republican lawmakers taking decisive action to protect the nation, uphold the Constitution, and look out for actual US citizens, who are always lost and forgotten in the shuffle.

repairing America, leaving no time for revenge. A flawless response.

President Trump ventured into the lion’s den last night, otherwise known as “Fox News.” Trump hosted a town hall in Iowa, right before the major caucus, and he rocked it. If online reactions are anything to go by, Trump’s town hall was a grand slam. He successfully took on the two #NeverTrump hosts and the network and not only emerged victorious but also exuded poise, grace, and presidential professionalism. Trump tackled challenging questions with ease and clarity, articulating his plan to “Make America Great Again” once more. Trump united the country once, and he plans to do it again.

Everyone appears to be in agreement, except for the Biden regime, which will likely challenge this in court quicker than you’d hear about a new Trump indictment. Here’s what Fox News reporter Bill Melugin had to say in an X post:

Another highlight was when President Trump dubbed Biden the “Manchurian” candidate. His quip about the “China virus” also drew quite a few laughs. President Trump, in stark contrast to Biden’s confusion, DeSantis’ awkwardness, and Haley’s phoniness, engages effortlessly and effectively with members of the town hall audience. Of course, Trump maintained his signature sharp wit throughout the town hall, especially when asked about the possibility of “mending fences” with the GOP. His jab at Christie got some laughs. When Fox News brought up “chaos” from his first term, Trump didn’t miss a beat—he pointed straight at the Democrats as the culprits, which is 100 percent true. Even the New York Times had to admit that Trump came out smelling like a rose. The New York Times: Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis called each other liars at a heated debate, but went easier on Donald Trump, the absent front-runner. He faced a friendly televised town hall crowd instead.

Governor Abbott saw this report and commented on it: NEW: The Texas Military Department confirms the TX National Guard has seized control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass (city property where mass illegal crossings are), and is restricting Border Patrol from accessing the area, saying the Feds “perpetuate illegal crossings”. This is the area where Border Patrol has been cutting TX razor wire. Razor wire and fences are now deployed to block the area off from the public and federal government. Attached video is from our crew on the ground this morning as they began blocking it off. You can expect DOJ to sue Texas over this. Texas Military Department statement: “The Texas National Guard has main-

Governor Abbott is acting in accordance with what the majority of Americans want. Across the nation, there’s a growing frustration with the current border policies under the Biden regime. More states should consider adopting this move until it becomes crystal clear to illegals that they’re not wanted or welcome and should go back home. Furthermore, those who are here illegally need to go back.

The concepts of success, unity, and freedom resonate deeply with many, particularly in light of the recent years marked by division, failures, and censorship. Trump managed to stir up patriotic vibes in people, a feat that’s not exactly easy in these disheartening times of the Biden Blunders. One of the most striking moments occurred when President Trump was questioned about seeking “retribution” against his enemies, who have done him so dirty. It was in this moment that Trump’s leadership came through. His response was a masterclass in neutralizing the negative press. Trump stated that his focus would be entirely on

President Trump also announced that he knows exactly who his VP will be, and when the time is right, he’ll let us know as well. Who do you think will be Trump’s VP pick? It’s hard to say for sure, but one thing seems pretty certain: it won’t be Nikki ‘Birdbrain’ Haley. In the end, President Trump is all about changing hearts and minds. That’s the core of his movement: inspiring people to embrace ‘America First,’ to prioritize themselves and their communities. Trump had a tremendously successful night, and it appears he’s entering the Iowa caucus with a renewed sense of purpose. You can watch the entire Fox News town hall with Trump below:
