Volume 62, Edition 7, Inflation is not because of supply/demand, it's because the government cannot stop printing money and the value of the dollar has been cut severely. We have to have a currency based upon a fixed value such as gold/silver. The fiat system is not sustainable unless wages increase at the same pace. Our kids and grandkids will be similar to the old Russian Serfs unless a severe change happens quickly with our Fed and the way they conduct monetary policy. It's as if this is a managed decline of America.

Hill Elementary Slothing around at the library Summit has new principal
Here’s a day late Happy Birthday to the young man that made me a dad. Here’s to you Mahlon on your 18th! At Jo Gray’s funeral, we ran into some “old” friends as Rick Orr, Rick Hanning, Butch Thornhill, and Lenny Gray were in town. The 1970 Howe Bulldogs regional championship team have now have turned...70. Norman Dickey always joked that half of them “aughta be in prison.” Orr claimed they were Honor Boys, as in “Yes, your Honor.”

At Monday night’s Howe ISD Board of Trustees meeting, it was approved unanimously to hire Rebecca Aranow (pronounced Erin-no) as the new principal at Summit Hill Elementary School. Aranow, originally of Tom Bean, comes to Howe from Anna ISD where she was the assistant princi-
pal at Clemons Creek Middle School in Anna. Aranow and her husband have three children, one still in school and will attend Howe High School. She began her educational career in a private school and later an ELR teacher before becoming an administrator.

The following was issued in the Von Smoot Report Vol. 12, No. 16 (Broadcast 556) April 18, 1966 Dallas, Texas A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY America was founded as a Constitutional Republic to safeguard the liberty of the people against the tyranny of democracy or a one-man dictatorship. City of Howe preparing budget for $5.7 million At Tuesday’s regular City Council meeting, City Administrator Monte Walker gave updates on budgetary items for the upcoming 2024-25 fiscal year which begins in October. After the first workshop, the budget numbers came to $5,692,809.32, however, adjustments could be made as the adoption of the budget does not take place until September. Last year’s budget was finalized at $5,167,049. The main reason for the 10 percent increase is to overcome the $700,000 deficit it will take to operate an EMS service for Howe. Being able to overcome that deficit could also see a reflection in the tax rate. Expected revenue from ad valorem taxes is projected to be near 1.4 million and sales tax revenues for the city is budgeted at $474,263. The construction of new homes was not included in the ad valorem projections. The administrative budget is projected to be $918,453.45, which is lower than last year’s figure of $1,102,870. The Police Department budget requests have increased from $817,466 to $808,383. The street expenditures which were budgeted at 750 percent more than previous years was increased from $196,210 to $211,000. This would allow the city to continue with street projects next summer like the five that are currently going on. The budget for the Howe Community
Library is projected to be $158,260. The Fire Department Budget revenues are expected to be just north of $200,000, however, expenditures are $966,515. One of the reasons for the operational costs are exceeding is due to the amount of overtime that needs to be budgeted in order to have 24/7 coverage. Seven employees require a salary near $400,000. The ambulance lease cost is $40,000. In Solid Waste, Howe is expecting expenses of $392,631.88, which is a slight increase over last year due to a moderate increase from Frontier Waste Management. The city has absorbed that increase and is not passing that on to the customer. Wastewater expenditures are expected to be $878,880 while revenues are initially budgeted at $1,060,210. Due to the number of homes projected, while not factored into ad valorem, are factored into water and sewer. The water revenue is expected to be $1,176,958 while expenses are budgeted at $1,185,903. The EDC are discussing a budget of $159,582 and Collins Memorial Fund (Summit Gardens) budget is $13,200. Councilman Michael Hill asked for alternate solutions for the $30,000 the city is paying annually for animal control. Councilman Sarah Myrick proposed an increase in street light budget due to the number of new streetlights in the new developments.

$19 million and expenditures at 19.9 million which will be the first deficit budget adopted in many years. The ISD has cash on hand to cover a deficit budget. The average value of a home in the Howe ISD was estimated to be $344,000. Wilson expects a real value increase in the range of $250 per home. The ISD ended the year with 1,281 students district wide. The month of May had an attendance rate of 94.4 percent. The district added 24 students during the school year. A graduating class with lower enrollment and a typical entering kindergarten year should drive the student enrollment over 1,300 for the first time. Wilson said he has hired several staff members including Floyd Webb – Middle School AP; Stanton Holland – Elementary School PE/Middle School Tech/Coach; Tenise Blackshear – Elementary School Bilingual Teacher; Amy Price – Elementary School Teacher; Tim Cooper – Intermediate school PE/Middle School Tech/ Coach; JoAnn Barton – Intermediate School Teacher; Shelby Baio – Intermediate School Aide; Sandra Marin – Intermediate School Aide; and Rebecca Aronow—Elementary School Principal.
Wilson says he has the need to hire a second grade and kindergarten teacher at Summit Hill Elementary along with an aide. Howe Intermediate School is looking for a custodian. Howe Middle School appears to have a full staff after a recent hire of an aide. Howe High School is in the process of hiring two aides and searching for an ISS/Teacher/Coach. Wilson said the turf area at Summit Hill Elementary School is 95 percent complete and looks great. The teardown of old playground equipment at Howe Intermediate School has taken place and the completion is expected to be in four weeks. Concrete was poured behind the Middle School cafeteria due to the road being damaged by the wet ground and trash trucks. The High School and Intermediate School cafeterias also got a fresh coat of paint. The board reviewed the investment strategies and adopted a Resolution in which the primary goals are to ensure safety of principal, maintain liquidity, and maximize financial returns in that order. Wilson and Business Manager Julie Snapp serve as the officers.

Constitutional Republic (Continued from page 1)
A Democracy is a political system in which the people periodically by majority vote at the polls, select their rulers. The rulers have absolute power to make whatever laws they please by majority vote among themselves. In a “Constitutional Republic,” The people also, by majority vote at the polls, select rulers who make laws by majority vote among themselves, but the rulers cannot make any laws they please because the Constitution severely restrict their law-making power. The Ideal of a Democracy is Universal equality, the idea of a Constitutional Republic is individual Liberty. In this century, great strides have been made towards the goal of subverting our Republic and transforming it into a Democracy. The foremost tactic of the subverters is subversion of language. By calling America a Democracy until people thoughtlessly accept and use the term, totalitarians have obscured the real meaning of American Principles of government. Note the following passages from a recent article distributed by the New York Times News Service — “In the United States and other leading democracies, recent years have seen perceptible growth in Executive Authority as society becomes more equalitarian, it tends increasingly to concentrate absolute power in the hands of one single man; this is a voluntary surrender of a free people escaping from freedom to one autocratic master.” Note the following from Gunnar
Myrdal’s “American Dilemma” — “In America, Liberty often provided an opportunity for the stronger to rob the weaker; against this, the equalitarianism in the American creed has been persistently revolting, and in the conflict between equality and liberty, equality is slowly winning. In America, conservatism has, to a great extent, been perverted into a cult of the Constitution. This is unfortunate since the Constitution is in many respects impractical and ill-suited for modern conditions. The worship of the Constitution is also the most flagrant violation of the American creed; the Constitutional Convention was nearly a plot against the common people.” (3:20) Gunnar Myrdal, a Swedish socialist, was hired by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1937 to direct a study of the Negro in the United States, engaged the large staff, some of them Communists and pro-communist, an “American Dilemma,” resulted, first copyrighted in the United States in 1944; in 1954, the Supreme Court handed its school segregation decision, which deliberately violated the Constitution, reversed a previous Supreme Court decision, and lit a fuse touching off explosive violence, which has been shattering our society ever since. The court decision cited an American Dilemma as one of the modern authorities on which it relied in preference to the Constitution for its justification of its decision. An “American Dilemma,” written by Swedish Socialists, provided the basic rationale for the conversion of our Free Republic into an equalitarian Democracy. Myrdal contends that the American Declaration of Independence 1776, proclaimed the ideal of an equalitarian (Continued on page 6)

shall soon be a monarchy.”
democracy because it contains the phrase “all men are created equal. Eleven years later, the Constitution created not a democracy founded on the idea of equality but a Republic founded on the ideal of Liberty. This is why Myrdal says, “the Constitutional Convention was nearly a plot against the common people,” but he a those who parrot these ideas are either ignorant or dishonest, the Constitution was ordained specifically to safeguard the principles of Liberty proclaimed by the Declaration of Independence.
John Adams, one of the giants of the American Revolution period, said, “Democracy will end the all, content the all, endeavor to pull down all, and when by chance it happens to get the upper hand for a short time, democracy will be revengeful, bloody, and cruel.
The Declarations phrase “all men are created equal,” means all men are created equal before the law and before the Creator regardless of their inequality in human society. The Declaration of Independence says that men are endowed with unalienable rights and that the purpose of government is to secure these rights. The “unalienable right of man,” enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, do not include equality, but they do include Liberty, along with life and the pursuit of happiness. Equality of all men in the eyes of God and before the law is a condition essential to freedom. No other kind of equality is possible. Government efforts to achieve material equality will produce crushing tyranny but will not make people equal. The writers of the Constitution were anxious to safeguard Liberty against dictatorship, monarchy they called it. But, their chief anxiety was to protect the country against democracy. Edmond Randolph, delegate to the Constitutional Convention from Virginia, said — “The general object of the convention was to provide a cure for the follies and fury of democracy.” Elbridge Gerry and Roger Sherman, delegates from Massachusetts and Connecticut, urged the Constitutional Convention to “create a system to eliminate the evils from the excess of democracy.” Alexander Hamilton, a delegate from New York, said, “We are now founding a Republican Government; real Liberty is not found in Democracy. If we incline too much to democracy, we
Speaking of pure democracy in which the people by majority vote act as their own lawmakers instead of electing representatives to make laws, James Madison said, “Such democracies have ever been incompatible with personal security of the rights of property. A Republic promises the cure for which we are seeking. Madison, known as the father of the Constitution, knew and said that “enlightened men will not always be at the helm of government to serve as the proper guardians of the wheel.” He knew that unlimited political power cannot safely be entrusted to the Nation’s elected representatives to use as a majority sees fit “because a majority of a group is far more likely to be tyrannical than one man is. In a democracy, if a majority develops hatred of all blue-eye babies and orders them to be eliminated, the babies could be legally executed because whatever the majority wants at any given moment is the supreme law of the land, in a democracy. How can liberty be safeguarded against the mindless, soulless tyranny of the majority rule? When a government is founded on the principle of majority rule, Jefferson answered that one “in questions of power let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief the chains of the Constitution.” In short, America was founded NOT as a democracy but as a Constitutional Republic. “We pledge allegiance to the Republic” for which our flag stands, not a democracy. The Constitution requires a Republican form of government for all states but does not mention democracy, and neither does the Declaration of Independence or the Bill of Rights. “The Constitution is a binding contract, enumerating limited powers which the federal government can legally exercise, prohibiting it from exer(Continued on page 7)

Three arrested by McKinney PD in connection with local Sonic robbery On Thursday, June 13, Jackson Bryant Johnson 18-yoa, Antoine RawlsGilder 22-yoa, and Andre DanielsGilder 17-yoa, all of Anna, were arrested by McKinney police on warrants for Aggravated Robbery. On May 20, a Dollar Tree store in McKinney was robbed by two masked gunmen, followed by the May 22 robbery of the Sonic Drive-In in Howe, and the May 24 robbery of Mr. Jim’s Pizza in Frisco. In all three crimes, two armed, masked gunmen entered the businesses and demanded money from store employees. A coordinated investigation between
McKinney, Frisco, and Howe police resulted in the identity of the suspects, and their eventual arrests. Howe investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Johnson on June 14 for his involvement in the Sonic robbery and anticipate obtaining an arrest warrant for his co-conspirator in the coming weeks. The investigation is ongoing. All three suspects were booked into the Collin County Jail for Aggravated Robbery, a first-degree felony. If convicted, the suspects face up to 99-years imprisonment, or life, in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
City signs agreement with Centurion Homes In Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Sean Terry of Centurion Homes gave a brief introduction to council members about their intentions to purchase two parcels near the intersection of Smith Road and W. Young Street. One of the properties is in an existing MUD (Municipal Utilities District) and one is in Howe’s ETJ (Extraterritorial jurisdiction) which is not annexed by the city. Centurion wants to look at an agreement for both properties to be within the city limits and are going to present financing mechanisms such as a combination of a PID (Public Improvement District) and a TIRZ (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone). Terry requested to come back to next month’s council meeting to make a
formal presentation about the proposed development. The council gave authorization for Mayor Karla McDonald and or City Administrator Monte Walker to sign a Professional Services Agreement with Centurion. Along with the agreement, Centurion gave the city a check for $25,000 to hold as escrow for upcoming engineering fees. The council then approved an action item to allow Walker to open a separate account to hold the funds.

cising any powers not read in the contract, it denies federal officials to do whatever they claim to be necessary for the general welfare. Federal action not authorized by the Constitution is illegal, even if approved by an overwhelming majority of the people. Because all the elastic powers of the government are left with the states. The ultimate power to change the organic structure of government laws is left with the people. But the means of making changes and amending the Constitution are carefully prescribed to militate against hasty, unwise decisions by the people. As Benjamin Franklin answered to a woman who asked him, “What kind of government had the convention given America?” Benjamin Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Very old and wise Benjamin Franklin saw through the mist of time to the day when Americans might trade their freedom in a Constitutional Republic for the promise of governmentguaranteed equality and security in a Democracy. And beyond that, to the day when Democracy inevitably degenerates into a dictatorship guaranteeing nothing but poverty and serfdom for the people that it robs and rules. The American Constitution System, unique in history, enabled Americans to develop a backward Continent into the most magnificent nation of all time. The System was designed to prevent both tyranny by the government and reckless rebellion by the people. We must restore it and keep it. What can you do toward that end? Your job, you who care and understand, is to help educate others. Only by these means we can restore our Republic.

Crazy conspiracy theorist articles by the Howe Enterprise—To Kill A Mockingbird Originally published in the Howe Enterprise, April 6, 2020 Lets get this out of the way up front. The Coronavirus is real. The topic today should not reflect anything otherwise. But the war against COVID19 is not the only war America faces today. The United States of America was built by freethinkers, but it is remarkable how sleepy our country has become. We have evolved from a free nation to a nation enslaved. When the hottest actor or actress crafts their skill set to get us to buy a product or tell us that the orange man is bad, we are programmed to nod and say, yes and maybe with a fist pump. From our birth, we’ve been programmed by Hollywood to know what’s “cool” and “hip” and the way we should be living – the latest clothes to wear – the latest hairstyle – and how to become a material girl in a material world. In Bob Dylan’s latest release Murder Most Foul, he pinpoints the Age of the Antichrist began with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The 17-minute song is the first original track released by Dylan since his 2012 record Tempest. Dylan, a notorious serial freethinker, has recently released his poetry about the murder of John Lennon and the sinking of the Titanic. But we’ve been told to not be freethinkers, but to follow the masses and be good little citizens that listen to what the media tells us and take it as the gospel. Because if you differ and become a freethinker, you’re ridiculed and called a “conspiracy theorist.” That term became popular as a negative grenade after the movie JFK was popular in 1992 and the country was divided on who the actual killer(s) was. Those that felt Oswald acted alone used the term “conspiracy theorist” to suggest that the freethinkers were off-center, uneducated, and even crazy. So, freethinkers were silenced. They were forced to think outside the normal spectrum of open conversations. But the “conspiracy theorists” lived on and out from the silent hush speaking groups, they made their presence known loudly and wildly by electing a freethinking businessman, free of Washington DC politics, to be their 45th President of the United States. Meanwhile, the bully mainstream media controlled by the elite, have waged war on him because he is using means to bypass the program channels. President Donald J. Trump said he is a “wartime president” last week. This has been true since before he was even elected. US Attorney John Durham released recently that the FBI spied on Trump and Americans and found agents routinely used inaccurate or incomplete evidence to justify surveillance warrants. This comes after FBI officials lied to the American people, and to Congress. But none of this is new. Look at Project Mockingbird during the period from March 12, 1963 to June 15,
1963, the CIA installed telephone taps on two Washington based newsmen who were suspected of disclosing classified information obtained from a variety of governmental and congressional sources. The intercept activity was particularly productive in identifying contacts of the newsmen, their method of operation and many of their sources of information. For example, it was determined that during the period they received data from 13 newsmen, 12 of whom were identified; 12 senators and six members of Congress, all identified; 21 Congressional staff members, of whom 11 were identified; 16 government employees, including a staff member of the White House, members of the Vice President's office, an Assistant Attorney General, and other well-placed individuals. Several other sources were partially or tentatively identified, but the short span of the activity precluded positive identification. It was observed that through these contacts the newsmen actually received more classified and official data than they could use, and passed some of the stories to other newsmen for release, establishing that many "leaks" appearing under other by-lines were actually from the sources of the target newsmen. You might save a ventilator for the narrative news networks, also penned as Operation Mockingbird. A 1977 article in Rolling Stone, written by Carl Bernstein, was titled “The CIA and the Media.” Bernstein said in the article that the CIA “has secretly bankrolled numerous foreign press services, periodicals and newspapers—both English and foreign language—which provided excellent cover for CIA operatives.” These reports led to a series of congressional investigations done in the 1970s under a committee that was set up by the U.S. Senate and named the Church Committee. The Church Committee investigations investigated government operations and potential abuses by the CIA, the NSA, the FBI, and the IRS. In 2007, around 700 pages of documents from the 1970s were declassified and released by the CIA in a collection called “The Family Jewels.” The files all surrounded the investigations and scandals pertaining to agency misconduct during the 1970s. There was only one mention of Operation Mockingbird in these files, which referred to the two American journalists that were wire-tapped for several months. Though declassified documents show that this type of operation occurred, it’s never been officially confirmed as the title of Operation Mockingbird. Thus, it’s also never been officially discontinued. The freethinker can weed through the propaganda issued on cable channels such as CNN, MSNBC, and yes, Fox News. But they hardly influence people into deep sleep mode as much as
once again in a world free of ridicule and full of optimism? The latter sounds better.
John Jacob Astor IV NBC, ABC, CBS, The New York Times, and Washington Post. Movies like Forrest Gump have become highlight films showcasing the grandest work of the CIA in our generation. The greatest storytellers move up the ladder. News anchors with strikingly close ties to the CIA like Dan Rather and Anderson Cooper even made their way as “trusted newsmen” to shows like 60 Minutes which is nothing more than a CIA weekly hit job on Americans. Those that have been bought into the Disney world of the entertainment industry will never be able to come to grips with this. They will forever believe that the freethinker is just an uneducated crazy person that is not well-versed in what is “absolute truth” told by the Washington Post, New York Times, and cable news. That’s what they’ve been programmed to believe. And it doesn’t help to have fake planted fake freethinkers to lead real freethinkers astray such as Alex Jones and Info Wars. Being able to weed through the bull manure has become harder and harder with the likes of these planted figures. The United States of America was built by freethinkers. Otherwise, the European suppression would have continued across the pond. But the European influence infiltrated America over time. With the sinking of the Titanic and those who could blockade went down, America initiated the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 under Woodrow Wilson. The expiration date for America was set in. Soon thereafter, the New Deal and taxation after taxation. And here we are like the fading brother of Marty McFly wearing a disappearing Mickey Mouse shirt in the picture. We are a country that is a government check away from poverty with 6.6 million filings for unemployment. Americans are in debt up to their neck which is firmly planted up the rear end of the Hollywood megaphone. And here we are, at the crossroads of America—back to the triple underpass. Will the patriots be extinguished, and will the American dream die? Will we continue to be a country with the illusion of freedom, controlled by the government )or even its shadow), and manipulated by propaganda? Or will the freethinkers be able to live
Those that are not controlled will have an easier time through this period should the freethinking President win the war. Patriots already understand that Hollywood is a mechanism and a tool for destruction and control not so much different than a monarchy system. They already believe that the 35th President was assassinated by his own government alphabet soup organizations. They already believe that Building 7 did not fall without luminous help. They already believe that mass shootings were organized with a 2nd Amendment agenda in mind. They already believe that climate change is a way to increase taxes and further control the masses. Who gave us our generation names? Who named the “Greatest Generation?” Who named “Generation Z” and why? Remember that the terms “conspiracy theory” and “conspiracy theorists” have been weaponized by the Mockingbirds. One day, the mockingbird will be killed. The lies will be uncovered. And the children will be freed from the depths and caves of secrecy and evil deception. We will be freed from debt, from racebaiting, and from mind control. The chips are all on the table and the freethinker will place their bets on Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z to Kill a Mockingbird. “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” – From To Kill A Mockingbird.

City of Howe SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers a pre-recorded message describing the situations to a live person or an answering machine in the affected area possibly including instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will be placed to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed. The following information is required to add a telephone number into the "CodeRED" database: first and last name; address (physical address, no P.O. boxes); city; state; Zip Code; and primary phone number. The system works with cellular phones but requires a valid street address. When entering information, please fill out all of the screens because the newest data entered will replace the old data. Texas History Minute Before the Texas Revolution and the annexation debates of the 1830s and 1840s, portions of Texas were briefly considered part of the United States, Ken Bridges all stemming from the Louisiana Purchase. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the United States doubled in size overnight. America had pushed far to the West into the wide expanses of the High Plains and to the frontiers of Texas. The French government was very evasive in what they considered to be the extent of the Louisiana Territory. The question of whether the United States owned any portion of Texas was ultimately put in the hands of one of America’s top diplomats, John Quincy Adams. The French connection to Texas dated back into the 1600s. In 1682, French explorer Robert Cavalier, Seuer de la Salle, claimed the entire Mississippi River Valley and all of its tributaries for France. This, by default, included the Red River, stretching to include the entire modern Texas panhandle and the watershed in the counties all along the modern North Texas border with Oklahoma. It also came to include the French claim on the Sabine River and the lands of what is now most of East Texas and the failed colony in Matagorda Bay. John Quincy Adams, born in 1767, was the son of John Adams, the nation’s second president and part of the committee that wrote the Declaration of Independence with Thomas Jefferson. Like his father, he was a skilled attorney and learned the art of diplomacy while his father served as the American ambassador to The Netherlands and later to Great Britain. In 1794, President George Washington appointed Adams as ambassador to The Netherlands, at only the age of 27. Two years later, Washington also named him to double as ambassador to Portugal. He would serve as ambassador to Prussia from 1797 until 1801 before returning to the United States. He became the U. S. Senator from Massachusetts in 1803. Not long after Adams arrived in Washington, DC, Congress learned about the treaty with France purchasing Louisiana. France had turned the entire area over to Spain after the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. Forty years later, with Spain under control of French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, Spain was forced to give the land back to France. Uncertain what to do with the territory and needing money to finance his wars, Napoleon had his ministers sell the territory to an eager United States for $15 million (or about
$335 million in 2019 dollars). There was brief debate over what territory was included with Louisiana, whether France was the rightful owner of the territory, and whether the federal government had the authority to even purchase the land. Seeing the overwhelming opportunity, the United States Senate, including Adams, voted to approve the treaty by a vote of 26-6. Adams had become Secretary of State under President James Monroe in 1817. By 1818, the United States faced a Spain that had regained its independence but was a rapidly weakening power. Spain faced rebellion in its colonies from Argentina to Mexico. Spain was unable to control Florida, and raids by the Seminoles into the United States had become a contentious issue. Spanish control in the area included the entire modern state of Florida, but the areas of the Alabama and Mississippi panhandles and the far eastern reaches of Louisiana east of the Mississippi River and north of Lake Pontchartrain had been seized by American settlers in 1810 even though Spain still had legal ownership. Adams entered into negotiations with Spanish Ambassador Luis de Onis to purchase Florida. Spain had rejected earlier offers, but with Spain facing a collapsing position in the Americas and the threat of American military power, Onis reluctantly gave in. Onis, however, was not willing to give up everything in exchange for nothing. As negotiations continued, Onis pressed for clear border between the U. S. and Spain, a request that Adams was willing to support. As American claims on East Texas were shaky at best, Adams gave ground on claims into the Sabine and Red River Valleys. The Adams-Onis Treaty would acquire East Florida and also set a western border at the Sabine River to the Thirty-Second Parallel and North to the Red River. The border would then run along the Red River to the OneHundredth Meridian to the Arkansas River and then to the Rocky Mountains and to the Pacific Ocean. The treaty was signed on February 22, 1819. The treaty was approved by the Senate though there were many expansionists upset by what they saw as the “giveaway” of Texas. When the subject of annexing the independent Texas arose in the 1830s and 1840s, many supporters loudly called for the “reannexation” of Texas. The treaty nevertheless gained Florida for the Union and gave East and North Texas its modern boundary. It also gave America a solid claim on the Pacific Ocean as a boundary. Texas would later be admitted, becoming the 28th state admitted into the Union on December 28, 1845.

Thoughts On Abundant Living One of the more popular verses about blessings in the New Testament is John 10:10. We notice Christ is speaking, “The thief does not Dr. Billy Holland come except to steal, to kill, and to destroy. But, I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” This statement is a wonderful promise of confidence as it generally describes how the devil is evil and is trying to destroy us, and that God is always good and desires for us to be victorious representatives of His glorious kingdom. You would think that everyone on the planet would want to be on God’s “winning side” who by the way, has infinite spiritual power and authority, however, this does not seem to be the case. Many who claim to be Christians are not walking in what the Bible calls spiritual abundance. Why not? Since God is a Spirit, His word is Spirit, so spiritual abundance comes from being filled and abiding in His Spirit. When this is not happening we struggle and appear not much different than nonChristians? So, how do we understand this word abundant? Christ uses the Greek word “perissos” pronounced per-is-sos. In this context, it means ‘superior in quantity or quality’ ‘exceedingly’ ‘very high’ ‘advantage’ and ‘beyond measure.’ This is the same word that Paul uses again in Ephesians 3:20, “Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.” Our first clue to understanding this word is to realize Paul is speaking about the nature of God and that Christians can be filled with as much of God as they choose. You see, free will is at the center of our human existence and created with decisionmaking abilities where we make decisions each minute. It’s a privilege to be given this authority, but with great responsibility, there is also serious accountability. Galatians chapter 5 reveals the intentional sinful works of the flesh and adds that no one will go to heaven who does such things. Then in verses 2225, we read about the attitudes that should be evident in those who are
truly walking in the abundant life of God. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol. Against such, there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” The Bible does not say that we are limited as to how close to God we can be. Jesus walked with His Father as one and since He is our example, we are expected to do the same. It’s difficult but possible according to how much we love Him. What does this have to do with abundance? Everything. Unfortunately, many times followers are seeking more for the gifts without being focused on the giver. People hear the phrase “abundant living” and the church is filled with hallelujahs, but are they thinking about more money or drawing nearer to God? The Almighty is often viewed as a divine being obligated to answer our requests like a letter to Santa. Yes, God listens and responds to our needs according to His perfect will, but whether we receive our desires or not we still love Him just for who He is. Right? Surely when we ask for material things and do not receive them we do not become discouraged because we were denied God’s promise of abundance. Being born again comes from the abundance of God’s grace, and the level of our spiritual intimacy with Him is measured by our obedience to Him. Being saved through the sacrifice of Jesus is vital, but it’s not the end – it’s just the beginning. We are not to accept the invitation to follow Him, and then sit on the couch waiting for Him to give us everything on our wish list. Let us realize that everything we dream about will not turn out like we imagined. Many times God is saving us from more misery and disappointment. We hear people talk about all the glorious things heaven will contain, like the golden streets and mansions without mentioning Christ. Reuniting with our families are comforting thoughts, but being with God is the ultimate eternal abundant life. Instead of focusing desire on abundant prosperity, may we realize that God is waiting for us to “abundantly” give more of our heart to Him. Dr. Holland is a Christian minister, chaplain, and author.
