four and fighting back for the overall win in the fourth. Howe won the first two sets by a score of 25-17 in each of the first two sets. After falling behind by a large margin in the third, Howe battled back for a long 29-27 loss in the third. Again, getting off to a slow start and trailing 7-0 in the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs went on a surge and pulled out the 25-19 win to send them to a 1-0 record. Howe was led by Presley Shockey and Kamry Snapp’s 10 kills. Freshman Tabatha Bjorn totaled four kills and four aces while Harlee Schue had five kills. Presley also added three blocks while Snapp racked up five aces.

Howe entered the Whitesboro tournament over the weekend where they opened with a 2-0 win over Tioga by scores of 25-21 and 25-20. Bjorn had 12 assists and four kills while Shockey had five kills and two aces. Howe then defeated Tishomingo in two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-12. Bjorn had 10 assists and three aces while Shockey had eight kills. Emilia Garza had four kills. The Lady Bulldogs moved to 4-0 on the young season by again defeating Tom Bean in two-of-three by a 25-23 win, 25-23 loss, and 15-11 win. digs. Bjorn had 10 assists, four kills, and six digs. Rylee Coffey had six digs and Snapp finished with four aces, four kills, and five digs. On Saturday, Howe lost their first game of the season to Coram Deo in two sets (25-13 and 26-24). Coffee had eight digs while Bjorn had seven assists. Shockey chipped in six kills and six blocks. The Lady Bulldogs then defeated Whitesboro JV 2-0 by scores of 25-15 and 25-20. Shockey had nine kills and Bjorn tallied seven assists. Game three was a loss to Lake Dallas, 2-1 (25-23, 12-25, and 12-15). Shockey had 10 kills and five digs. Snapp totaled seven kills and 14 digs. Bjorn added 11 assists. Head Coach Sam Switzler, in her second year at the helm, said the goal for this team is to reach the playoffs and is excited about the way the girls are approaching the season. Losing such talented players such as Kendall Griffin and Emery Snapp can sometimes be devastating to a program, but she says that the leadership that the seniors bring has been the foundation for what is to come in the next few years. She spoke of Shockey, Snapp, and Coffey in particular with their different approaches in style saying that Coffey is more of a vocal emotional leader on the floor whereas Shockey and Snapp play the calming

Switzler also had high praises for the freshman Bjorn who has put work into the sport outside of just Howe. “I knew last year when she was in eighth grade that she could have an impact with us very quickly,” said Switzler. The head coach in her second season at Howe may miss the final portion of the season as she’s expecting the birth of son Colton around that time. “We’re going to push for a playoff spot. I hope I’m there to be a part of it,” said Switzler.

Band Boosters seeking sponsors for trailer wraps Submitted—Howe Band Boosters are seeking sponsors to be able to purchase three trailer wraps for the Pride of Howe. The trailers carry instruments and props for our prestigious Howe High School Marching Band. Only one other school in the state has made more State Contest appearances than Howe. Small town, big sound! We are accepting donations and sponsors until September 30, 2024, so the wraps can be completed in October. Our trailers travel to football games as well as marching contests. We have two sponsorship levels and are also accepting any donations from the community:

First Chair Level Sponsorship $1,000 – your logo will be displayed on the back of one trailer. This will give you multi-year advertising for a one-time donation. Your logo will also be shared on our Facebook page. Ensemble Level Sponsorship $500 – your business or personal name will be listed on the back of one trailer. We will also thank these sponsors on our Facebook page. Community Support – choose a spot on our Trailer Grid and donate that amount! (Donating less than $500 will not get your name/logo on the trailer but we are very grateful for your sup-

port!) Anyone can donate by sending a check to: Howe Band Boosters 200 Ponderosa Road Howe, TX 75459 Or donate via our PayPal: PayPal email is PrideofHowe@gmail.com. City of Howe SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers a pre-recorded message describing the situations to a live person or an answering machine in the affected area possibly including instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will be placed to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed. The following information is required to add a telephone number into the "CodeRED" database: first and last name; address (physical address, no P.O. boxes); city; state; Zip Code; and primary phone number. The system works with cellular phones but requires a valid street address. When entering information, please fill out all of the screens because the newest data entered will replace the old data. Texas History Minute Herb Kelleher became the face of one of Texas’s most popular airlines by the 1980s. In an industry that appeared that strugKen Bridges gled with many bankruptcies in that decade, he helped build Southwest Airlines into one of the most successful and profitable in the country. He was born in Camden, New Jersey, in March 1931. After graduating high school in 1953, he went on to earn a bachelors degree at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. While attending college, he happened to meet college student Joanne Negley, a San Antonio native. The two hit it off and were soon married in 1956, a marriage that produced four children. Kelleher earned a law degree at New York University. He returned to New Jersey and briefly served as a clerk to the New Jersey Supreme Court. Soon, his wife convinced him to move to Texas, a move Kelleher for years said was the smartest decision of his life. Kelleher had settled into a life of a prosperous attorney by early 1967 when he met with one of his clients, Texas businessman Rollin King, and the two discussed the idea of a lowcost airline that would connect the three-largest cities in the state: Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. By operating strictly within Texas, it would avoid many of the federal regulations on airline flights, routes, and pricing. In March, the two incorporated their venture as Air Southwest and went through the process of securing funding, planes, and licensing. Soon, three other airlines challenged the fledgling company in court, arguing that it upset the delicate balance among airlines created by federal regulations. One by one, the legal challenged fell, and the rechristened Southwest Airlines was ready to go. After almost four years locked up in court, Kelleher managed to win approval for Southwest to begin flying in June 1971. He later said that when he saw the first Southwest jet, he ran up and kissed it. Southwest boasted $20 tickets (about $154 in modern dollars), which were almost half the cost of their competition. The airline used the Boeing 737 exclusively, helping save on maintenance costs. By 1978, the airline was expanding rapidly and Kelleher rose temporarily to CEO of the corporation, a move that was made permanent by 1981. Kelle-

her’s quirky humor and good business sense helped propel the airline to new heights. He promoted a light-hearted approach to the corporate environment that included eye-catching and humorous ads while emphasizing customer service. “You treat your people well, and they’ll treat others well,” he once said. “You have to treat your employees like customers.” His gift for humorous promotion made him synonymous with the airline, and it became an attitude that filled the entire company. Southwest prided itself on being a no-frills airline. Instead of assigned seats and different classes of seating, it was entirely economy class. The airline became famous for offering food no more extravagant than a bag of peanuts while the stewardesses would often play trivia games with the passengers mid-flight. The airline continued to grow in profitability and popularity with the flying public. As a result, he was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1992, a trademark dispute threatened to erupt into a major legal headache for Southwest. The airline had taken to using the motto “Just Plane Smart” in its advertisements. However, Stevens Aviation, a South Carolina airplane maintenance firm, took exception because it was too close to its own trademarked motto “Plane Smart.” The two agreed to settle the matter with a good-natured arm wrestling match between the two CEOs. While the date of the match approached, Kelleher jokingly posed at a gym prepping for the match by lifting two bottles of whiskey with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth. Stevens CEO Kurt Herwald beat Kelleher in the highly publicized match, which proved to be a public relations bonanza for both. Kelleher made a donation to charity, and Herwald decided he would share the trademark with Southwest. Nearing 70 in March 2001, Kelleher stepped down as CEO of the company. He continued to serve as chairman of the board of directors until his retirement in 2008. The same year, he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Kelleher died in January 2019 at age 87. Today, Southwest has more than 800 aircraft and employs more than 74,000 people, making it one of the largest airlines in the country. What started as a small statewide airline now has more than 100 destinations and earns more than $23 billion each year.

To the ones who stand out in a good way Have you ever known someone that you admired because of who they were? There is something special and refreshing to witness the Dr. Billy Holland light and love of Christ shining brightly in one of His children. I know a sweet lady like this. I will not mention her name because she does not like the attention of anyone telling her how wonderful she is, even though it’s true. She just enjoys working and serving quietly in the background no matter where she is or what she’s involved with. For example, if someone mentions that something needs cleaning she immediately goes to work. If something needs to be done, she is always the first one to show up and the last one to leave. More than this, she is genuinely kind, tenderhearted, gracious, generous, and filled with God’s love. I’ve known this person and her husband for several years as he was an artist and eventually, they became involved in our local theatre where I am also a cast member. Her husband passed away recently, and he was also very humble and talented. We all miss him dearly. If you’ve been around people like this, you know what I’m talking about as it seems they have a special glow around them. What is it? It has to be the Spirit of Christ illuminating from within them. I realize no one is perfect but God, but I believe there are still a few people in this world who have discovered how to be aware of God’s presence all the time. They are determined to have a clean and pure heart because they are in love with Jesus and desire to do His will. This is no doubt how God wants all of His children to be. I will be honest, I’m drawn to people like this, I want to know more about how they live and what they do to be filled with God. I was thinking about this lady recently after one of our weekend performances at the theatre, and there she was glowing as brightly forever. I can't help it, it convicts me and makes my eyes watery. Maybe it

convicts and exposes how I am not walking as close to God as I should. I decided to give her a call and without being weird, I wanted to tell her that I sense God in her, and if she didn’t mind, I wanted to know her secrets of being a wonderful witness for Christ. Of course, she brushed off my compliments and was blushing as usual. She went on to say that she is nothing special and just an average person. She said every morning when she awakens, she begins talking to the Lord. Her prayer goes something like this: “Jesus help me to be like you today. Help me to do and say what you want instead of what my flesh wants. May I have compassion and meekness, and may your presence shine in my heart so that others can see you. In your holy name, I pray, amen.” I realize that many of us start our day with something similar, but when she relayed this simple commitment, I could sense her childlike innocence and Godly wisdom. I believe that praying is the key to whatever we seek to accomplish for God, but also we must put works with our faith for it to succeed. We find in Matthew 5:14, where Jesus compares His followers to light containers, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put a covering over it.” C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying, “Don’t shine so others can see you, shine so that through you, others can see Him.” When we realize what God wants us to be, we are then faced with deciding just how much we will do. If we truly want others to see Christ in us, our responsibility is to manage and control our thoughts. Being transformed by the renewing of our mind requires selfdiscipline or else our words and deeds will be governed by carnal thinking. Our behavior is the impression we leave and in this light, we have the choice to be whatever type of person we desire to be. What people see is what they remember, and all that we have accomplished in the past means nothing if we are not manifesting the love of Jesus today.

Dr. Holland is a licensed and ordained minister, author, and chaplain. Watch his music video, “Refuge” at billyhollandministries.com.
