Hebecameincreasinglyinvolvedin conservativepoliticalcausesashe grewolder.Throughoutthe1950s,he bankrolledaconservativeradioprogramcalledFactsForum,whosecommentatorscondemnedtheNewDeal andJewswhilesupportingtheanticommunistactivitiesofSen.Joseph McCarthy,whowaslaterdisgracedfor thosesameantics.Inthe1960election, heopenlycondemnedJohnF.KennedyforhisRomanCatholicfaithand forwhatHuntsawasweakanticommunistcredentials.
Hunt'sprominenceinDallasandin conservativecausescoupledwithhis loudcriticismsofKennedyledsome conspiracytheoristsopenlyattemptto linkHunttoKennedy'sassassination in1963.Noseriousevidenceofsucha linkeveremerged,buttheFBIprovidedbodyguardsforHuntinthechaotic aftermathofKennedy'sdeath.
Huntbeganwritingextensivelyinthe 1960s,writingnewspaperandmagazinecolumnscondemningcommunismandcommentingontheoil business.Hewroteseveralbooks,includingWhyNotSpeak?(1964)and HuntforTruth(1965).In1967,he wroteanoveltitledAlpacainwhichhe describedhisidealworld.Theunequal systemheenvisionedhadyoung adultsreceivingonevote,elderlycitizensreceivingtwovotes,andthe wealthiesthavingfourvotes.
HuntdiedquietlyinDallasinNovember1974.Intheyearsafterhisdeath, hislifewasthesubjectofnumerous booksaswellasendlessspeculation andgossipinDallassocialcircles.
Thedynamicrelationship betweenloveandprayer LastSunday,I wasaskedto bringthe morningsermonfora wonderful churchinthe countrycalled Mt.Lebanon Methodist.I hadadream recentlyabout deliveringa messageand whenIawoke,IwentIintomyoffice andaskedGodtopleasenotletitdissipatebeforeIcouldwritedownas muchofitasIcouldremember. Dreamsarelikethemorningfogthat fadeswhenthesuncomesout.Iwas noticeablyrattledandwastypingfeverishly.HowmanyknowwhenGod givesyouawordit’snotasuggestion? Iendedupseparatingthecontentinto fourpartsandhereisoneofthesections.
Withinthedream,eventhoughIwas theonespeaking,itwasawarningof seriousdisciplinetome.Italkalot aboutloveandprayerbutIseldom considerthatIcannothaveonewithouttheother.Sadly,moreoftenthan not,Idonothaveeitherone.I’mbeing bluntlyhonestaboutmylackoffervencywhenitcomestocaringand intercession.Icomprehendthatcompassionandhavingaburdentoprayis measuredbyhowfilledIamwith God’sSpirit.IwillnotprayifIdonot love,andwithoutlove,Iwillnotpray.
Doyouseehowthesetwoimportant aspectsoftheChristianlifeworktogetherandbotharedrivenbyfaith? WhydidJesuspraysomuch?Because Hewasfilledwithlove!Thesobering questionhereishowdowefeelabout ourresponsibilitytoloveandpray?Do Iwanttodevelopapassionateburden tolovemoreandtopraymore,oramI satisfiedtojustkeepgoingtheway thatIam?Inthedream,Iwastoldthe waytohavemoreloveistoprayand askforit.(Ishouldn’tbesurprised).
Havingadeepconvictionandconcern forothersdoesnotjustfallonmy head.Yes,thenatureandcharacterof Christlivesinme,butthisdoesnot automaticallytransformmycon-
closemyselfinwithGodeachdayand pray,andthentheresultofdeveloping myrelationshipwithHimanddrawing closertoHimwillbetobelikeHim. WhatisimportanttoHimwillnow becomemyburdenswhichcauses theseprioritiestobecomesostrong theywilldrivemetomyknees.
Thissoundswonderful,buttobehonestitdoesnothappenasmuchasit should.I’moftensobusywithmy ownthoughts,I’mnotconsidering whatHewantsmetodo.Ifillmyday upwithdistractionsandendupnot askingformoresensitivityandlove. Andguesswhat?Thisleavesmewithoutaburningdesiretopray.Yousee, whenwehaveanunderstandingofour accountabilitytobeHisservant,weno longerhaveanexcuseastowhywe failtoobey.Thebottomlineisthat evidently,IdonotcarelikeIshould. WhereismyreverentialfearofGod?
HowmanytimeshaveIreadthepassageinFirstCorinthianschapter13, andyetIkeepthinkingit’stalking aboutsomeoneelse.Let’sreaditagain. “ThoughIspeakwiththetonguesof menandofangels,andhavenotlove,I ambecomeassoundingbrass,ora tinklingcymbal.AndthoughIhavethe giftofprophecy,andunderstandall mysteries,andallknowledge;and thoughIhaveallfaith,sothatIcould removemountains,andhavenotlove, Iamnothing.AndthoughIbestowall mygoodstofeedthepoor,andthough Igivemybodytobeburned,andhave notlove,itprofitsmenothing.”
I’mnotexactlysurewhatbeingnothingandhavingnothingmeansspiritually,butIknowit’snotgood.HereI seewhatisrequiredofmeandyetIam rebelliousagainstit.Why?BecauseI wouldratherbeabsorbedandconformedtotheworld.Disobedienceisa sinandinsteadofbeinganovercomer forChrist,I’mbeingoverwhelmed withmyowncarnality.WhatIfailto beconvictedaboutisthatIcannot blamemyfailuretoliveforJesuson anyoneelse-eventhedevil.Ihave freewilltochoosewhateverIwantto do,andIwillbetheonewhowillanswerforit.
