Congratulations!We haveafabulousnew playgroundatConnectionsPark.Iwon'teven attempttodescribethe playground.Wordsjust won'tdoitjustice.You'll needtogooutthereand walkthroughtheplaygroundtoseeandappreciatehowgreatthisnewestcommunityassetreallyis.
Perhapsevenmoreimpressivethantheplaygrounditselfishowit wasbuilt.Between400 and500volunteers workedmorethan4000 man-hoursovera5-day periodtobuildtheplayground.Thisisnota commercialplayground thatwasboltedtogether. Theplaygroundwas constructedfrom82,000
poundsof14-footplastic lumberboards.Volunteerscut,mitered,routed, drilledandscrewedeverybitofthestructure overthefivedays.When itwascompletedSunday eveninglastweek,it seemedimpossiblethatit wasjustapatchofdirt onWednesdaymorning.
Ourparkboardmembers visitedaverysimilar playgroundinanother communityafewyears ago.Iknewthenthatthe folksinHowecouldsucceedwithacommunity buildplayground.There wasnoquestionthatwe haveplentyofpeoplewiththeskillsand workethictobuilda playground.Themore importantingredientis theheartrequiredtopull offsuchalargeundertaking.Thehearttodo

HereplacesCarlHudmanwhowas terminatedbytheCityCouncilbackin July.
“Wearegoingtocreateacitizenspoliceacademysowecanengagewith ourcommunityandgettoknowone another,”Sullivansaid.Healsosays Howewillbeanaccreditedagency andhasbeguntheprocesstomovein thatdirection.
On-handfortheswearinginwereall officersfortheHowePoliceDepartmentaswellasHoweISDPoliceDepartmentincludingChiefMattWhitworthwhoonceservedasthechieffor theHowePoliceDepartment.
SinceMayorMcDonaldappointed CityAdministratorMonteWalkerinitiallyonaninterimbasisinlateAugust 2023,Howehasrestructuredvirtually theentirecitystaff.
“Wehavebeenveryfortunatetotransformourstaffwithelevatedexpectationsthatmatchupwithwhatthecitizensexpectfortheirreturnoninvestment,”saidWalker.“Ithinkcitizens andnearbycommunitiesareunderstandingthatthere’sanewdirectionin Howe.”
Sullivanhasover25yearsinlawenforcementandbeganaschiefinSomervilleinOctober2020.Herebuiltthe agencywith100percentturnoverand obtainedaccreditationstatuswiththe TexasPoliceChief’sAssociation (TPCA). DuringhistenureinSomerville,theysawacrimereductionrate of36percent.Healsoservedasthe chiefofpoliceattheWhitneyPolice DepartmentfromNovember2008
throughNovember2010andatFort StocktonfromNovember2010 throughJuneof2011.
HehasaMaster’sDegreeinStrategic LeadershipfromMountainStateUniversityandaBachelorofScienceDegreeinAdministrationofCriminal Justicefromthesameuniversity.

Thispastweek, October16 throughOctober20,thepeopleofHowe Texas,came togetherand pulledoffone ofthemostincredibleconstructionevent thatIhaveeverbeeninvolvedin.The openingofConnectionsParkkids playgroundthispastSundaywasa celebrationofwhatcanhappenwhena communityisaskedtohelptransform aflatpieceofpropertyintosomething thatwillbenefitHowefamiliesforthe next50years.ThevisiontheLowder familyhavefortheparkandcommunityiswhatmakesthisplaygroundand thewholeparkaveryspecialplace.A veryuniquegroupofcitizensvolunteeredtheirtimeandcraftstohelp buildthisvisionfromthegroundup.I gottoworkwithsomeofthefinest professionals,bluecollarandworking peopleinthiscity.Infivedays,hundredsofcitizensgatheredinacommoncausetotakeourcitytothenext level.PeopleIdidnotknowarenow friends.Igottoworkwithpeoplewho dedicated70-plushoursinthesefive

Intheweeksleadinguptothescheduledbuilddays,wedidnothaveas manyvolunteerssignedupasrecommendedbyourcommunitybuildplaygroundconsultants.Wecontinuedto putthewordoutthatweneededvolunteers.Therewasnotsomemagic leverwecouldpullthatwouldsolve theapparentshortfall.Theplaygroundleadershipfeltstronglythatthe playgroundwasthekindofgood workswearecalledtodoforothers. Wepressedforwardwithfaithinthe Manabove,withoutknowinghow everythingwouldbeaccomplished. Ourfaithwaswellplacedastheplaygroundbuildwascompletedontime Sundayevening.
Noteverythingwentasexpectedor withoutproblems.Thevolunteers
pressedforwardandadjustedasneededtoovercometheunplannedchallenges.Unfortunately,onevolunteer sustainedseriousinjurytohisfingers. Ourthoughtsandprayersarewithhim foraspeedyandcompleterecovery.

HaroldBarefootSanders,Jr.,wasborn inDallasin1925.Barefootwashis grandmother’smaidenname,Dennie Barefoot.Thoughhedislikedthename asayoungster,heembraceditasan adult.Heattendedlocalschools,graduatingfromNorthDallasHighSchool in1942.Heenlistedinthenavythe nextyear,servingonabattleshipinthe PacificfortheremainderofWorldWar II.

It’sobviousthatpoliticsarebecoming moreglobaleveryday.WiththeadvancementofAIandtheWorldEconomicForumunitingthenationstogether,weareheadingtowardaworld governmentthatsomecallthesystem ofthebeast.Ibelievethereiscominga daywhenthissnaretrapwillcontrol everyperson,andstrangelymanycannotseewearesomewhatcaughtinits webalready.Yes,difficulttimesare coming,butasChristians,wemust refrainfromallowingpoliticstocreate animosityinoursoulstowardthose whodonothaveourbestinterestsin mind.Whenitcomestospiritualinterpretationsalongwithsocialandpoliticalviews,wecaneasilyfallintothe “usversusthem”mentality.Whenthe infectionofhatredcontrolsourattitudeswedehumanizepeopleandsee themastheenemy.
It’strueourdailydecisionsinclude takingsidesaswearecalledtostand forGod’struth.However,asweattempttojustifyourdogmaticopinions, wecanslowlysubstituteourcallto loveotherswithdespisingthem.With technologynowallowingustoknow everyone’sviewsattheclickofabutton,thisoverloadofinformationcan takeawayourpeaceandreplaceit withangerandhostility.Wecanagree thosewholiearedeceptive,butsecretlyhatingthemisnotonlyhurtingour soulbutalsohinderingGod’sdivine appointmentswithHisgospelofsalva-
