WhenitcomestoTexasHighSchool football,homecomingcelebrationsand mums,itiseithergobigorgohomein theLoneStarState.PrincetonHigh SchoolislocatedjustoutsidetheDallas-FortWorthmetroplex,inAreaV, andboastsof277studentsenrolledin agscienceclasses.Ofthose,thefloral designstudentsembracedaBIGprojectthisfallandconstructedamonster homecomingmumthatadornedthe foyeroftheirschooltocelebratetheir homecomingcelebration.
TheTexas-shapedmumtook50hours toconstruct.Itwasconstructedof 2,525coffeefilters,40yardsoftraditionalribbon,and100yardsofbutcher papertoaddtothehangingribbons. AgscienceteacherShalleyBolessaid, “Iwassopleasedwithhowwellour mumturnedout,toonlybeoursecond yeartocompletesuchaproject.The mumtrulyaddedtoourschoolspirit andexcitementoftheweekofhomecoming!”

Theirinitialvoyageinlate1941proceededwithlittleincident.They dockedbrieflyatPearlHarborinlate NovemberandweresentontoAustraliatobolsterAlliedforcesinanticipationofJapaneseaction.Thetroops heardthenewsoftheattackonHawaii whileonthehighseas.Armyofficials brieflyconsideredrecallingthemto Hawaii,butthedecisionwasmadeto sendthemonward.Afterspending Christmas1941inAustralia,themen werethenorderedtoassistAustralian, British,andDutchtroopsintheDutch EastIndies(modern-dayIndonesia) againstJapan.

TheGenevaConventionof1929specifiedthatprisonersweretobegiven propershelterandmedicalcareand nottobetortured.Nationswerealso supposedtoinformeachotherofcaptives.Japanrefusedtoratifythetreaty,
andduringthewarresortedtoamedievalmentalitythatsurrenderwasdisgracefulandprisonersdeservedthe worst.Andtheworsttheydelivered, manylateransweringfortheirwar crimes.
Onegroupseparatedduringthebattle forJava,BatteryE,waseventually senttoJapantoworkasslavelaborin theshipyardsandcoalminesuntilthey werefreedin1945.Eightofthese99 mendiedincaptivity.
MostoftheremainderoftheLostBattalionwereheldforsevenmonthsin Javabeforeputtoworkintheirown slavelaborcampsbuildingtheBurma RailwayforJapan.Fornearlyayear, morethan66,000Alliedprisoners alongwithmorethan230,000SoutheastAsiancivilianswereforcedto builda258-mileraillinefromBurma toThailandacrosstreacherousmountainpassesandunrelentingjungles. Theoverworkedmenhadlittlefoodor water,nomedicalcare,andwerebeatenormurderedbyguards.Seventy thousandmendiedbuildingtherailroad.
Aftercompletionofthe“DeathRailway”in1943,themenweresentback toprisoncampsintheDutchEastIndies.Overthenexttwoyears,they weresenttovariousplacesacross SoutheastAsiatoserveJapanese whims.Theysufferedfrompoor health,poornutrition,andbeatings.In all,163menfromtheLostBattalion diedinJapanesecamps.
InSeptember1944,Americansubmarinesonroutinewarpatrolscame acrossJapanesemerchantshipscarryinghundredsofAlliedprisoners.Once safelybackinAlliedhands,thePOWs begantellinghowtheyhadworked withsurvivorsoftheSecondBattalion inBurma.Newsthatsomeofthemen werestillalivewasrelayedtowaiting families.Theynowhadrenewedhope, butthesehopesweretemperedbythe knowledgeofwhattheprisoncamps werelike.
Itwouldbenearlyanotheryearofhard fightingbeforetheLostBattalion couldberescued.InAugust1945,Japansurrendered.Bythistime,mostof theimprisonedSecondBattalionwere incampsinJavaandThailand.Two AmericanC-54transportswere broughtintobringthemtoahospital inCalcutta,India,beforereturning home.
AftersometimebackinTexas,familiesorganizedawelcomehomecelebrationinOctober1945.Themen formedtheLostBattalionAssociation andmetregularlyintheensuingyears. Inabrutalchapterfromawarfullof brutality,themenmayhavebeenlost foratimebutwereneverforgotten.
It’saspiritual revelationto comprehend thatwords havetremendouspowerbut wherethereis privilegethere isalsoaccountability.Communicationnot onlyshapesour viewswhile influencingour behavior,butwordsalsoexposewho wereallyareaswecanlearnagreat dealaboutaperson’sviewswhenwe hearthemspeak.Thisisawonderful prayertobegineachday,“Setaguard, OLord,overmymouth;keepwatch overthedoorofmylips”Psalm141:3. Yes,wehavemuchtoprayabout,and thispetitioniscrucialifwearetolivea holylifeofintegrity,respect,andlove. Encouragingwordsareworthmuch, andcostlittle,andsincewhatwesayis whatwethink,itwouldbewiseto monitorourthoughtsandwhatwe believe.
WordscanaccomplishGod’sintentionsandcarryustoencouragingplaces,but,unfortunately,theycanalso leadusintosomedarksituations.As children,manyofusquotedthislittle rhyme,“Sticksandstonesmaybreak ourbones,butwordswillneverhurt us”whichwasacourageousstandas wewerebeingthreatenedorinsulted. Still,werealizedafterwegrewupthat inmostcases,thewordsweremore emotionallypainfulthanifwehad beenphysicallyassaulted.There’sa goodchanceyourememberwhen someonesaidsomethingthatcaused youtofeelrejectionandpiercedyour soul.Maybederogatorywordsfroma parent,teacher,coach,familymember, neighborhoodkids,orabullyfrom school,andunfortunatelythesepainful woundswillalwaysberemembered. Thankfully,someindividualschange overtheyearsastheyrecallthehurtful thingstheyhavesaidandareconvicted toapologizeastheyrealizethatfoolish peoplesayfoolishthings.
Ontheothersideofthetwo-edged swordofwords,it’sastoundingtounderstandtheyalsohavethepowerto bringinspiration,joy,hope,andhealing.InProverbs16:24,theHolySpirit relayedtokingSolomonthathighly sensitivepeoplearediscreetandcarefultousegoodjudgmentwiththeir
fromthosewhosincerelycareabout us.Intheancientworld,honeywasthe sweetestsubstanceavailable,andSolomonwasintentionalwithhisimagery ashepennedthesewords,“Pleasant wordsareahoneycomb,sweettothe soulandhealingtothebones.”We havetheopportunitytofilterour speechthroughtheHolySpirit,butit’s ourchoicetoapplythesespiritualprinciplesorignorethem.Thewiseperson whodesirestowalkintheawareness ofGod’spresencewilllearntocontrol theircarnalnature.Ouremotionsare interestedinpleasingourflesh,butour spiritisalwayspassionateaboutpleasingtheLord.
Acommandassociatedwithobedience toGodistodevelopspiritualsensitivityandself-controlwhichareincluded inthefruitsoftheSpirit.Asaresultof choosingwordswisely,ourcommunicationcanandshouldbecomeaconsistentrelayofthemessageofJesus. EllenG.Whiteisquotedassaying,“A Christianrevealstruehumilityby showingthegentlenessofChrist,by beingalwaysreadytohelpothers,by speakingkindwordsandperforming unselfishacts,whichelevateandennoblethemostsacredmessagethathas cometoourworld.”Somebelievethat whenwecancontrolourwords,we havemorematurityanddiscernment tocontrolourlives.James1:26says, “Thosewhoconsiderthemselvesreligiousandyetdonotkeepatightrein ontheirtonguesdeceivethemselves, andtheirreligionisworthless.”
TheAlmightywantsHispeopleto revealHischaracter,anddevelop agapecharitywhichmotivatesusto embracethisbeautifulwayofconnectingwithothers.Thosewhodisregard speakingasadivineappointmentto witnessforChristanddonotcarewhat theysayarequitefamiliarwiththe flavoroftheirownfoot.Ephesians 4:29declares,“Donotletanyunwholesometalkcomeoutofyour mouths,butonlywhatishelpfulfor buildingothersupaccordingtotheir needs,thatitmaybenefitthosewho listen.”Mayweconsiderwhatisinthe wellcomesupinthebucket.Inthis light,werealizethathate-filledand destructivewordsareintentionalsin. Thegoodnewsisthatrepentanceisan opportunitytobeforgivenandrestored byGod’sgrace.
