Therearesomanypeopletothankoverthepast 10yearsandeight months.Myfamilyhas tobeatthetopasmom anddadwerealways supportivealongwith Michelle,Mahlon,and Jake.ALOToftimes,I wouldfireoffoneof thosecontroversialopinionarticlesandrunitby Michelleandshewould quicklysay,“No,you can’twritethat.”Someof youwouldhavereally enjoyedthem.Othersnot somuch.Obviously,I didn’trun everything passedher.

Thisjourneyalsogave spotlighttoMichelleCarneyandherdedication andalandingspotforall herhardwork.Iwantto especiallythankherand theotherphotocontributors.Ialsowouldliketo thankthestudents,teachers,coaches,principals, andespeciallyKevin Wilsonforallowingme accesstocoverthegreat HoweISD.

Thesaleof The Howe Enterprise willtakeeffect laterthisafternoon.Itwas announcedthreeweeks agobyMonteWalker, PresidentofGraysonPublishing,LLCwhohas ownedandoperatedthe publicationsinceMarch 17,2014.Thenewowner isAshleyHusbands,PresidentofVictoryIndependentPublishing.

Husbandsgraduatedwith aBachelorsinCommunicationswithanemphasis inJournalismfromTarletonStateUniversityin 2014.Shealsorancross countryandtrackwhileat Tarleton.From2015to 2020,Husbandswasan assistantcoachatAustin CollegeinSherman.

In2019,shestartedacorrectivemassagebusiness

thatshecurrentlyoperates.

In2020,shegraduated withaMastersDegreein Health,Kinesiologyand SportsStudieswithan emphasisinExerciseSciencefromTexasA&M UniversityatCommerce.

Reflectingonnearly11years ofcoveringHowe,linebyline

the 2019statetrackmeet andisgivenatearful hugbyherfather. This,Ibelieve,ismy favoritephotoItook duringmytimewith theHoweEnterprise.

Nearly11yearsof someone’slifeisalong time.Todayismyfinal editionofthe Howe Enterprise anditcomes withemotionsofrelief andsorrow.Thisjourney beganwithonemission toservethecommunityofHoweand spotlightourleadership, students,athletes,school district,municipality,and everythingthatmakes thiscommunityspecial.I wantedtogiveHowenot onlyimmediateinformation,butalsoahistoricalrecordofwhatthe eventsofthedaywereas wellasthevaluesand

moralcompassofHowe. Theflavorofmodern mediaiswhatmanyrefer toas“negativemedia” becauselet’sfaceit,car wrecksandcrimegetthe rubberneckertraffic countstoinflateadvertisingdollars.ButIdidn’t wanttodothat atall.I alwayssaid,“I’mnot lookingtomakeakilling, justmakealivingbenefittingmyhometown.”I studiedmyPapawBob Walker’spublications fromthe1960sand70s andwantedtoproduce (asonereadertermedit) afolksykindofpublication.

MayorKarlaMcDonald, CityCouncilmembers ShawnTylerandBillie Ingram,alongwithCity AdministratorMonte WalkerdrovetoUhland, Texasandtouredthe 450,000-gallonfacility thatputoffnonoticeable odorexceptwhenwithin tenfeetofthepools.

TheCityCouncillistenedtoapresentation fromBVRT-II,anoffshootoftheoriginal companyBVRT,which servessmallercommuni-

region.BVRT-II’sprimaryfocusistheDallasFortWorthmetroplex andtheywantHoweto betheirfirstlocation northoftheAustinarea.

TheCouncilwillmakea decisionatTuesday’s regularmeetingwhether ornottobeginnegotiationsforapublic-private partnershipthatwill guaranteecapacityfor Howe’scurrentandfutureneeds.

“We’reinahighdemand growthareaandwemust beabletomoveforward withinfrastructure needs,”saidMayorKarlaMcDonald.“Weall wantcommercial growth,butinorderto obtainthatgoal,wehave toreachacertainpopulationtoattractthosebusinesses.Thisoption wouldhelpuswiththe immediateandlongrangeplanswehavefor Howe.”

Ialsowantedtostartthepublicationto helpthelocalHowebusinessesbeable tocommunicatewiththeirconsumers becausethelargemediaoutletsinTexomawereoutoftheirpricerangeand didn’tfittheirneedsanyway.Iwanted tostoptherevolvingdoorofdowntownbusinessescominginandgoing outofbusiness.Iwantedtostabilize thecommercialbusinessesforlongtermsuccess.OneofmyfirstcustomerswasanewrestaurantcalledAbby’s thatopenedinmyPapaw’soldprint shopat108E.HaningStreet.With Abby’sstillopennearly11yearslater, thatgivesmeasenseofprideofhelpingtoaccomplishoneofthethingsI setouttodo stabilizethecommercialmarket.

Thispathbeganbyaccident.Iwas appointedpresidentofKeepHowe Beautifulbackin2013bythen-City CouncilmanBillFrench.Thatledme tomyvisionoftryingtorestorethe formerFirstChristianChurchwhich wasatonepointintendedtobecomea historicalmuseum.Therefore,lotsof historicmemorabiliaweretherealong withalotofvarmints.Nearthenortheastdoorwerethreeboxespacked withHoweEnterprisenewspapers fromthefirsteditionthrough1979 whichincludedallofmyPapaw’s work.Havingneverreadthem,ashe soldthebusinesstoJimEcholsfour monthsaftermybirth,Ifounditfascinatingtoreadthroughthearticlesof yesteryear.Ialsolovedtoreadhis Howe’sThatcolumnwhichgavebea

greaterinsightonwhohewasand whathewasinterestedinasaman whowasaboutmysameageinthe sametown.

SofastforwardayearorsoandI foundmyselfonthejobmarketand hadthiscrazyideaofstartingthe Howe Enterprise fromscratchand breathinglifebackintoitastomyunderstandingitwasdiscontinuedin 2010whentheRideoutsstoppedprintingit.Withabackgroundinmedia advertisingsales,Icalledmyoldboss BillHarrisontogethisthoughtson myideaandhesaidhethoughtI woulddowellwithitandfoundthe onlineversiontobeaforwardthinking move.Ithentalkedtomyparents aboutitandthedecisionwasmade

whenmydadsaid,“Ifanyonecan makeitwork,it’syou.”Thatvoteof confidencewasallIneededtohear andoffIwentproducingmyfirstpublicationsetforMarch17,2014.

Withouthavingabackgroundinjournalism,myfriendScottCaldwellgave mean Associated Press stylebookand Ibeganthejourney.Thefirstedition wasterrible.Itwasformattedterribly andwordedevenworse.HavingreceivedtheEnglishAwardinhigh school,Ifoundthat Associated Press stylewritingwasfardifferentthananythingItackledinhighschoolorcollege.IhadtounlearnthestyleofwritingIwasaccustomedtoandstartover.

Aftermyfirstpublication,whichwas onlysharedonFacebookatthattime,I receivedwordfromtheRideoutsthat theEnterprisewasstillinexistence andthatLanastillputoutanonline versionofherownwhichwasstill calledthe Texoma Enterprise. Butas kind-heartedastheRideoutsare,they encouragedmetotakethebatonand leapforwardwithit.Withthatblessing,the Enterprise becameoffand rollinginthesummerof2014asIhad officiallyownedthesamecompanyas myPapawandthatwasveryexciting tome.

Mostpeoplewouldsay,whatareyou goingtowriteaboutinHowe?And sometimesIdidn’tevenknowmyself. IrecallthisoneThursdayafternoon whereIhadnofront-pagestoryandno ideawhatIwasgoingtoevenhaveas astory.Afewminuteslater,Igota phonecallsayingthatatrainderailed alongsideHughesStreet.Ifoundthat theLordprovidedmewithwhatI neededthroughoutthisexperience.

UpongettingtheEnterpriseupand goingandgatheringnumerouslocal advertisers,Iwascontactedbythecity whowantedtohiremeastheireconomicdevelopmentdirector.Joe Shephard,then-cityadministrator, calledmeonemorningandaskedme tocometoCityHall.Asatypicalathomebusinessownershouldbe,Iwas inmybasketballshortswhenheofferedmethejob.Thatjoballowedme tostarttheHoweAreaChamberof Commercewhichalsogavememore

stufftowriteaboutandpromote.

Afterhavingbroadcastedhighschool footballgamesonradiosince1994for Sherman,Denison,andMcKinney,I feltlikeIcoulddelivera5A-style producttoHoweonFridaynights. Thatfirstyearof2014,itworkedout andtomybenefit,Howehadoverhauledtheirfootballprogramand broughtinaslot-TwizardnamedDale WestwhohelpedHowegettothethird roundoftheplayoffs.Thatonlygave risetotheexposureofthe Howe Enterprise.Themgoingdeepintothe playoffsforthreestraightyearsallowedustoincreaseourbudgetand addmorebellsandwhistlestoourproduction.

Duringthisadventure,I’vetraveledto theplaceyou’renotsupposedtotalk about(wherethebandjustgotback from),statetrackmeetinAustin,wrote countlessarticlesonschoolboard meetings,citycouncilmeetings,spotlightedStudentsoftheMonth,TeachersoftheYear,HallofHonorrecipients,coveredfourBulldogshead coaches,andagirlsbasketballprogramthatwasoutofthisworldfor muchofourtime.Inevergotmuchof agrasponhowtoproperlycoverthe LoyLakelivestockshow,however. Whilethisjobeliminatestheopportunityforvacationsasapublicationis dueeachMonday,Ididpublishone particulareditionfromTimesSquare.

Whenthetornadorippedthrough Howe,Iwrotewhatbecameanawardwinningarticleonthecommunity-led cleanup. The Howe Enterprise won theHughAynesworthAwardfromthe DallasPressClubforthatpiece.We wonitagainthenextyearwhentwo HoweladieswereattheLasVegas shooting,andwewroteaboutit.

Thispublicationwasnevermeantto bepoliticalinanyway,buttheworld changedin2016.AsIgrewintothe newsworld,itbecameglaringlyobviousthatthemainstreamnewsoutlets wereoutrightlyingtotheAmerican peopleontopicsthataffectedDonald Trump.Atfirst,Iwasratherskeptical athismotivesforrunningforpresident.Ialsodidn'tcareforhisnonpolishedpresenceandarrogantnature. However,beinginthebusinessofcollectingnewsandseeingtheliesthat (Continued on page 4)

werebeingtold,itmademewonder whytheestablishmentfearedhimso much.Itbecameclearandevidentthat thestoryofDonaldTrumpwouldbecomethestoryofourgeneration. From2016-current,itbecameacountrydividedduetothemainstreammediaforcefeedinglieafterlietryingto destroyanAmericanpresident.

Duringthe2020election,Iwrotethat theelectionwasstolen,andIcaught someofflackoverthat. The Howe Enterprise wasoneoftheonlypublicationsinAmericathatquestionedthe outcomeofthe“mostsecureelection inAmericanhistory.”Wearenot ownedbythecorporatemedia,andwe don’trelyoncorporateadvertisersto keepourbusinessgoing.Therefore, wecanjustwritethetruth,evenifit differsfromthecorporatemediathat demandsthatwe’reallcrazyifwe questionthenarrative.Myhopeisthat oneday,themainstreammediawillgo thewayofthecassettetapeandbeepers.

Andspeakingof2020,Icoveredthe entirenightmareoftheCOVIDpropagandascarethatsawAmericansforced toshuttheirbusinesses,maskup, schoolsshutdown,theidiocyofathleteswearingmaskswhilesprinting, andonandon.

Wequestionedthetotalitarianresponse tothevirusandquestionedthestrange vanishingfluandpneumonianumbers whichwhenaddedtogetherbecame thisnewCOVIDoutbreak.Ipersonallytalkedtolocalfuneralhomeswho didnotseeariseindeathsfrompreviousyears,thatis,untilaftermandated vaccinationsbroughtonmortalityrates

thatspikedexponentially.

AsmyresponsibilitieswiththeCityof Howehaveexpanded,thetimeIhave tocommittothispublicationhasbeen severelylimited.Ihadapathtosellita yearago,butthetimingwasnotright andthewaitbenefitedallinthelong run.AshleyHusbands,whoweintendedtoselltoayearagoandwhotook overtemporarilylastfallwilltakeover thisafternoon.Shewillcontinuethe hometownvibe,andIfeelcomfortable insayingthatHowe’soldestcontinuousbusinesswillbeingoodhands withsomeonewhohasaninterestin coveringHowetoitsfullest.

Iwouldliketothankallofyoureaders foryoursupportoverthe10yearsand eightmonths.Ialsowouldliketothank theadvertiserswhokeptmoneycominginformetobeabletotravelto placestocoverourkidsofHowe.

Thisexperiencegavemearenewed spiritaboutmyhometownattimes. Andthenattimes,IquestionedwhetherIshouldstilldoitwhenreceiving lessthanflatteringemailsandmessagesthattheirkidorkid’steamwasn’t coveredproperly.IhavemademistakesasI’mfarfromperfect,butIdid trytogeteverythingaccurate.Idohave regretsonafewarticlesthatwerecriticalofpeopleonlytryingtheirbestwith whatcardstheyweredealt.

MirabeauB.Lamar wasamanoftalent andimagination butalsoonewitha complicatedlegacy. Hewasthethird presidentofthe RepublicofTexas, justafewyears afterarrivingin TexasfromGeorgia.Hehasbeencalled the“FatherofTexasEducation”but alsofacedcriticismfordisastrouspoliciesthatledtobloodshedanddebt. Evenwithamixedrecord,Lamarremainsasubjectoffascinationformany. Hewasbornonhisfather’scottonplantationineasternGeorgiain1798.He wasthesecondoldestofninechildren. Lamarwasintenselycuriousandread voraciouslyasachild.Inhisearlyadult years,heenthusiasticallypursueda numberofprojectsbuthadmixedsuccess.Hespenttimeasamerchantandas anewspapereditor.Hiswell-connected familygothimajobaspersonalsecretarytothegovernorin1823,whichallowedhimtotravelthestateandmeet withmanypeople.In1826,hemarried; andthecouplesoonhadadaughter.

In1828,hemovedtothewesternGeorgiacommunityofColumbusandstarted asuccessfulnewspaper,theColumbus Enquirer,apaperthatstilloperatesas theLedger-Enquirer.Lamarwassoon electedtothestatesenate.Afterhiswife diedin1830,hefellintoaperiodof deepmourninganddeclinedtoseekreelection.Buthesoonfoundanewpurposeandbeganstudyinglaw.Hewas admittedtothebarin1833andmountedafailingbidforCongressthatyear.

Whenhisolderbrotherdiedin1834,a depressedLamartraveledtoTexasand stayedwithhisoldfriendJamesFannin. HesoonreturnedtoGeorgiatosettlehis affairsbeforereturningtoTexastostay. Bythispoint,theTexasRevolutionhad erupted.LamarvolunteeredfortheTexasarmyimmediately,initiallyservingas aprivate.AstheMexicanArmyapproachedSanJacintoinApril1836, LamarledadaringraidtorescuetofellowTexassoldierssurroundedbyMexicantroops Hewasgivencommandof acavalrytroopfortheBattleofSan Jacinto.

Lamarwassoonappointedtheinterim secretaryofwarforthenewlyindependentRepublicofTexas.Intheelectionsheldinthefallof1836,Lamarwas electedvice-president,runningonaseparateticketfromthewinner,SamHouston.

Texasasanindependentrepublicdid nothavepoliticalparties,buttheclearest politicallineswerewhetherTexanssupportedoropposedSamHouston.Under theTexasConstitutionof1836,apresidentcouldnotservesuccessiveterms. The1838electionquicklybecamea contestbetweenLamar,whooften clashedwithHouston,andalittleknownsenator,“HonestBob”Wilson, whoalwaysclaimedhewouldbejustas honestasthecircumstancespermitted. Lamarwoninalandslide.

Lamarsavoredthevictoryandprepared anextensiveagenda.Hisambitions werelargerthantheresourcesTexas had.UnlikeHouston,Lamarhadan antagonisticattitudetowardNative Americansanddeclaredinhisinaugural

addressthatthetribesshouldeitherbe “expelledorexterminated.”Healso calledforanationalbank,aschoolsystem,andanationaluniversity.After Houston’sefforttosecureannexationto theUnitedStatesfailed,Lamarannouncedhewouldopposesuchefforts aspresident.

In1839,hedecidedtomovethecapital fromHouston,thenamesakecityofhis chiefrival,tothesmallsettlementof WaterlooontheColoradoRiver.The citywasrenamedAustin,andLamar foundedwhatbecametheTexasState Libraryastheofficialarchives.Lamar laidthegroundworkforpublicschools inTexas,butastatewidesystemwould notbeestablisheduntilaftertheCivil War.Thousandsofacresoflandwere setasideasatrustforauniversity,but theUniversityofTexaswouldnotbe establishedfromthislanduntil1883.

PeaceeffortswithMexicofailed,and fewgovernmentswerewillingtorecognizeTexas.In1840,hedefiedCongress andsentanexpeditiontoSantaFetotry toconsolidatetheTexasclaimonthe RioGrandeasaborder.Lamarsent dozensofmenwithtensofthousandsof dollarsingoodstotrytoinitiatetrade withthedistantcity.Upontheirarrival, theywereimmediatelyarrestedby Mexicantroopsinadiplomaticdisaster forTexas.HesenttheTexasArmyto raidNativeAmericansettlements,but thisresultedinafierceresponsefrom theComanches,wholaunchedafierce seriesofraidsonsettlementsacross CentralTexasin1841,leavingmany casualtiesintheirwake.

Governmentspendingdoubled,and inflationsoaredastheTexasdollarcollapsed.Whenheleftofficein1841, succeededbyHouston,thenationaldebt hadquadrupledintomillionsofdollars.

AfterTexaswasannexedandbecamea statein1845,hewaselectedtothenew statelegislaturerepresentingEaglePass. WhenwareruptedwithMexicoin 1846,thenow48-year-oldLamarwas determinedtoserve.Hevolunteered andwasnotedforhisserviceattheBattleofMonterreyinSeptember.Afterward,hewasassignedtocommanda smallpostinLaredo.

Hecontinuedtomangehisplantationin RichmondaftertheMexicanWar.A bookofhispoems,VerseMemorials, waspublishedin1857.Politics,however,wasneverfarfromhismind.In 1857,PresidentJamesBuchananappointedLamartoserveasUSAmbassadortoNicaragua.Shortlyafterward, BuchanannamedhimtoserveasambassadortobothNicaraguaandCosta Rica.

Lamarwasproudofhisworkasambassador.Histenurebecameanimpressive capstonetohiscareer,buthealthproblemsincreasinglymadeitdifficultto serve.Hereturnedtohisplantationin RichmondinOctober1859torecuperatebutdiedofaheartattacktwomonths laterinDecemberatage61.

Inlateryears,Lamarwaswidelypraised forhiseffortsonbehalfofeducation, thoughittookdecadesforthoseefforts toberealized.In1932,thenewLamar UniversityinBeaumontwasnamedfor him.Schoolsandstreetsacrossthestate arealsonamedforhim.

Respectingand appreciatingourmilitary

President Reaganina radioaddress tothenationin 1983isquoted, “Veterans knowbetter thananyone elsetheprice offreedom,for they’vesufferedthescars ofwar.Wecan offerthemno bettertributethantoprotectwhatthey havewonforus.”

In1918,ontheeleventhhourofthe eleventhdayoftheeleventhmonth,a ceasefirewasdeclaredasthesigning oftheArmisticeTreatyendedWorld WarI.Ayearlater,PresidentWoodrow WilsondeclaredNovember11asArmisticeDayforthesoldierswhosurvivedastheymarchedinhometown parades.However,thefirstcelebration usingtheterm“VeteransDay”occurredinBirmingham,Alabama,in 1947.RaymondWeeks,aWorldWar IIveteran,organizedaNationaldayto honorallveteranswhichincludeda paradeandotherfestivities.

In1954,presidentDwightD.Eisenhowersignedlegislationchangingthe nameoftheholidayfromArmistice DaytoVeteransDay.Alawpassedin 1968tochangethenationalcommemorationofVeteransDaytothefourth MondayinOctober.Itsoonbecame apparent,however,thatNovember11 wasadateofhistoricsignificanceto manyAmericans.Therefore,in1978 Congressreturnedtheobservanceto itsoriginaldate.TheVeteransDay MomentofSilenceActwaspassedin 2016.

ThoughIdidnotserveinthemilitary, I’mproudofmySon,whoisamarine andthenlaterservedwiththeDepartmentofHomelandSecurity.Heisnow apoliceofficerataVeterans Healthcarefacility.NeithermyFather normyGrandfatherservedbutonmy Mother’ssideofthefamily,it’squitea differentstory.Mymom’sDadserved inWWI,andherthreeBrother’s servedinKoreawhichsadlyonedid notreturn.MyUncleKennyatonly20 yearsoldwaskilledonthebattlefield.

AsachaplainforaVeteransretirement facility,andit’sanhonortospend qualitytimewiththemanyfinemen andwomenofournation’sarmed

complishmentsinbattlebuttoalso appreciatewhotheyareasindividuals. IremembervisitingamannamedEdwardHicksseveralyearsagowho willinglysteppedforwardwhenhis countryneededhimthemost.Hewas only22andhadjustmarriedhislovely bride,MaryLou,fourmonthsearlier. Hereceivedthecalltojointhefrontlineandbravelyrespondedtowhat wouldbeknownaroundtheworldas “OperationOverlord.”

Irecentlyreadastoryaboutasoldier, privatefirstclassRomanDaviswho servedwitharmyintelligenceinthe KorengalValleyofAfghanistan.They wereessentiallyinablackzone,which meansifyouventureoutsideofthe wiremostlikelysomeoneisgoingto dieorbewounded.Theyweretracking keytargetssuchasOsamaBinLaden foroverayear.Hiswords,“Irememberduringthatdifficulttimebeingincrediblyhomesickandjustlost,ifyou will,inthemiddleofahostileenvironment.”Oneday,aUSBlackHawk helicopterfliesovertheirlocationand dropsafewbrightyellowmailbags. ThesergeantcalledRoman“peaches” becausehewasfromSouthGeorgiaas heyelled,“Peaches,youhavemail.”It wasaboxfromhome.

Hecutitopen,andremovedlayersof aluminumfoil,anddiscoveredhis mamawhadsenthimahugesour creampoundcake.Romancontinues, “I’veseenherbakemanyofthese cakesandgivethemawayasgifts, theyaremyfavorite.So,hereIam 7000milesfromhome,andmygrandmother’spoundcakeisnowsittingin frontofme.Myteamisstaringatit,so Ipulledoutmycombatkabarandcutit into12massivechunks.AsItasted it...Icried.Sittingthereonthatdreary mountainsideitcouldnothavetasted morefreshordeliciousasitwould haveinherkitchen.And,forthatone moment Ifeltsoloved,eventhough Iwaslonelyandcold,thatcake warmedmyheart.Itwasjustlike Mamawwashuggingme.”

Wewillneverforgetnotonlythose whowerewillingtomaketheultimate sacrificeandespeciallyfortheones whodid.JohnF.Kennedyinhis1963 ThanksgivingproclamationonNovember5declared,“Asweexpress ourgratitude,wemustneverforget thatthehighestappreciationistonot justutternoblewordsbuttoliveby them.”
