Advent Guide

2019

Prayers and Practices Darkness surrounds us, envelops us, and thickens our lives. It causes us to lose hope, to live confused, and to wonder “Is this all there is?” This physical, spiritual, emotional, mental, and relational darkness overwhelms us; yet it is this darkness that light pierces through. Light pierced through darkness in the beginning, when God said, “Let there be light.” And light pierced through darkness when Jesus, the Light of the World, broke through heaven and came down to earth. And light continues to pierce our world through the power of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of this light was to break through all darkness. Jesus breaks through physical darkness, as he literally walked the earth; he breaks through our inner darkness in the deepest recesses of our hearts and minds; and he breaks through relational darkness as he reconciles us to God and to others. We need this light. We need this hope. We need this clarity of love and truth in order to live out God’s purposes in our world. As you pray this Advent, you are invited to make way each day toward this light as it is breaking through. In the following pages you will find prayers to guide you and ways to live into. Join us in making way for light to break through in us, on our streets, in our city, and in the world. Making way with you,

Laura Murray and the Elders of Highland Park Pres

MAKE WAY

Our Father,

For 5 minutes, turn off your phone, TV, or radio. Meditate on the sentence, “In the beginning… was God.” Think about God creating light and life. Let this image turn your heart to worship God. What does your worship look like?

From you and through you are all things. We exist for you. We praise you during this Advent season for who you are: Yahweh, the Word, Alpha and Omega. In you we live, move, and have our being. When we behold you and your eternity, our humanity becomes very real. Forgive us for our pride and desire to be self-sufficient. Forgive us for the hurried pace of our lives. You have called us out of darkness and into your marvelous light. We ask you to fill us with your Holy Spirit, root us in your truth and word, and empower us to walk in the light so we can shine in the darkness around us and point others toward life in you. Amen.

Lord,

Take time today to pray in silence and solitude. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you toward an opportunity to bring God’s light to a place of darkness. As you pray, give yourself time to listen for that calling and commit yourself to make a plan to follow through. Write it below.

We come to you today grateful for your word that provides us with our only hope in life and in death. Your power, your goodness, your love, and your light are unfathomable. Grant our minds the ability to grasp who you are and what you have done, and trust all that you will do from the beginning and throughout eternity. You spoke creation into existence; there is nothing without you. Give us courage to go out and tell the world about this light and not to shy away from the darkness. Instead, allow us to be your hands and feet in order to bring you, your words of life, and your light to those who need it most. Give us the strength that we need to carry out your mission and to do so humbly as your faithful servants. Amen.

Gracious Father,

As we begin this season of Advent, whom do you know who could begin to be transformed by your prayers and witness, allowing the one true light to shine through you? Write their name below. Commit to pray for them this season. Consider inviting this person to one of our Christmas Eve services, or one of our many Advent opportunities listed on page 33–36.

Two thousand years ago you looked upon this world of darkness and came to redeem it in the form of your son: a permanent illumination, a light that cannot be overcome. It is only through this light that we begin to truly understand you, the meaning of our lives, the mystery of death and eternal life, and the salvation found only by trusting you. We are overcome with gratitude, Lord, for your unconditional love for us. Knowing our need for help, you provided us your Holy Spirit to indwell us. We know that it is only the power of the Spirit within us that enables us to be a light that will lead generations to become transformed followers of Jesus. Guide us to lead and love others with gratitude, humility, and a desire to love others well, that they might see and know you, our savior. We pray, Lord, that your light may shine through us into the world. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

Choose to actively pay attention and listen to others today. Slow down, making space in your day for longer conversations and pauses throughout your day. Ask questions and use phrases such as “tell me more” or “I am curious about that, would you mind expanding?” to invite further conversation and give the person space to share and be known.

We marvel in awe and wonder that Christ’s fellowship with you goes back to the beginning of time. Thank you for the power of your son, Jesus, through which all things were created. We are grateful that you sent him to reveal yourself to the world. Through Jesus, you unveiled your love for mankind, even while we were still sinners. You are victorious over sin, darkness, and death! Jesus was, is, and forever will be the source of eternal life for all who believe. While we live in an imperfect world burdened with despair and destruction, our faith in Jesus rescues us from our sin and brings us to eternal life with you. Forgive our selfishness and give us fresh ears to hear your words of truth and life. Holy Spirit, strengthen and empower us to be a beacon of light, encouraging and lifting those in need, and sharing the good news of the gospel wherever we go. During this Advent season, let the light of Christ shine through us. Help us share the gospel to your praise and glory. Amen. 6

Radiant God,

Do a good deed solely to glorify God and his goodness. Refrain from taking any credit or praise for your actions. What ideas do you have for today? Write them below.

Thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to be the light for all people. We know that as followers of Jesus, we too are meant to be light in this very dark world. Help us to know and embrace the good works that you have already prepared for us to do. We want our good works to glorify you and shine for the world to see. In our flesh we are tempted to compromise and be content with our own conveniences rather than living in ways that are holy and pleasing to you. Help us to live according to your power and to show others that our good works are a result of our relationship with you. Keep us from trying to stand out for our own sake, and help us to remember that our actions can show others that you are a good God and you love them. Help us live in humility as we follow your ways and do the work you have called us to. Amen.

A single light can light up an entire room if it is shared. Share your single light through kindness today. Choose to be kind to someone you do not normally move toward. This maybe a difficult-to-love neighbor or a colleague who requires extra patience. Share this light as an act of faithfulness to love others as Christ loves you. Think ahead of who this might be and write a prayer for courage.

Thank you for all of creation, especially in this Advent season as we celebrate your son’s birth. We live in confidence that our savior was there at the beginning of time, he is with us now, and he will be with us forever. It is in this confidence that we can live as he did, as we love and serve others with joy not only during Advent, but year-round. Thank you for the wonderful traditions of Advent: visiting with friends and family, worshipping together, exchanging cards, caroling, and other activities that gather us in an atmosphere of joy. But most of all, we thank you for the greatest gift— your son, Jesus. May this joy, gratitude, and celebration lead us as we give of ourselves as Jesus gave of himself. Amen.

What does being a witness of Jesus look like in your life? You can show up as a witness of Jesus’ and his love in many ways: visiting a neighbor who lives alone, volunteering to care for the hungry in the city, or going to another country on a mission trip. How might God want you to witness?

We thank you for faithful witnesses like John the Baptist. We were once lost in darkness, but in your mercy and grace, you saved us. We thank you for the people in our lives who have spoken, and continue to speak truth to us in our faith journey. May we do the same. We ask that you give us the courage to witness and go wherever you send us. We ask that we shine like lights, without fault in a crooked and depraved generation. May we declare that you are good, you are in charge, you love us, and you work for our good. We pray that the lost and unreached people around the world hear the good news, knowing that one day you will establish your eternal kingdom on earth, where all believers from every nation will worship you. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.

If something comes forward, write it down, and bless someone with your calling today.

Thank you for John and for sending him to be a witness to the light as we celebrate your birth. Thank you for providing us with yet another flashing arrow pointing to your true identity and purpose “that through you all might believe.” Thank you for John’s example of what it means to be a witness to Jesus as the light, as he sacrificed his entire life making your path straight. When he boldly prophesied, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,” your desire for us was revealed. Thank you for speaking your mighty truth through John, which summarizes the whole Gospel message in this one simple statement. We ask for your wisdom, love, strength, and boldness in telling others this same good news as we answer the call, like John, to be witnesses to your light. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

You have sent each one of us uniquely in time and place to bear witness of you. Through our words and actions, we have opportunities to shine light into dark places. Our places of work, school, homes, neighborhoods, and travels all need your light to break through the dark places. Give us courage as you lead us into the places and circumstances that long for your light. Wherever you take us, we pray that by our witness we will help shine the light of your love, grace, and salvation to all with whom we come in contact, whatever the results. What a gift of light, love, and true life. Your word transforms us through your word made flesh in Jesus, the light of the world. By grace, Lord, your light is here for all to see. For many, the call of the world is to be strong, successful, and self-seeking, whereas you call us to kindness, love, and humility. Draw us closer to you, Lord, for in you there is none of this darkness at all. Help us clear our hearts of the compromises we make with the world in what we believe and how we live. As you reflect on this gift of his, be ready to share with others where your joy, hope, and peace come from. You never know when a moment to share your story with others will arise. Write your prayer here.

We are awestruck as we read and meditate on this passage. You sent your son to us. He freely offered to share his light with us and to put his light in our hearts. It was a gift without condition. While we know we did nothing to earn this gift, we have the privilege of reflecting your gift of light into the world. We have the privilege of letting others know you through our lives, through the love we share with others, and through sharing the story of you in our lives. We confess to and apologize for letting the worries and busyness of life cloud your light. We ask your Holy Spirit to power up your light in us. Help us re-center on you. Remind us that you are the source, the only source of truth in our lives. Thank you for blessing us with your light. Amen.

MAKE WAY

Heavenly Father,

Let your light shine and be a beacon of the love of Jesus. As you start your day, pray that God will bring people into your life who are hungry to hear how Jesus has transformed your life. Pay attention to those around you, who might be open to hearing of God’s love. Commit to sharing the love of Jesus with someone today. Write down what happened below.

We rejoice in this Advent season as we celebrate the birth of your son and our savior, Jesus Christ. We praise you for bringing your redeeming love into our lives and into the lives of our family and friends. We grieve for those in our community who hear the word of Jesus proclaimed and sing Advent carols but do not know Jesus. We pray that you would open their hearts and minds to the transforming love of Jesus. We also grieve for those who live in darkness and have not heard the Gospel message of the transforming love of Jesus. We pray that you will embolden us to go to the parts of our community and our world where the name of Jesus is not proclaimed. Give us the will to be a beacon of light during this Advent season and beyond. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

Commit to praying today for those who have not experienced welcome or a home in their lives. Pray for those in foster care, who have been orphaned, or have been rejected simply because they were unwanted. Pray also for those who are the caregivers, the workers, and the people who choose to go out and are a welcome and home for those without one.

We thank you for your love and grace. At a time of darkness, our world received an everlasting light, your son, Jesus. Your holy son overcame death and darkness, bringing salvation and eternal light to our world. And as he came, he was misunderstood and rejected by many. Yet, he continued to love and welcome all who came to him. With profound gratitude we thank you for welcoming us, your children, through your love and grace. Thank you for Jesus, our savior. We pray our lives would be filled with the Holy Spirit to help love those who are hurt and rejected by others, and for those who are unwelcome in so many places. We pray for your wisdom in leading others out of the darkness and discovering Jesus as their savior. Give us patience and perseverance as we commit to the flourishing of our neighborhoods, cities, and country. We pray for courage to be a light for those who are without a home in you. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

We encounter people every day who, like these passages say, have not recognized God in their life or in the world. What are some ways you might let God’s love show through you today? Maybe it is patience through a difficult circumstance, or it is the tone you use in conversation, or your generosity toward others through money, or even how you prioritize your life. Choose a way for your focus today and display God’s love and existence through your actions. For additional ideas and opportunities, visit hppres.org/serve. What action will you choose today?

We praise your holy name. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the creator of all things. We pray that we would know you for who you really are by accepting and following your call on our lives through the surrender of our agendas and desires to you. The world tells us to chase status, possessions, money, power, and instant gratification. But you call us to something different. You call us to a life of service. You call us to put needs of others ahead of our own, to be honest no matter the personal cost, and to love those who ridicule us. You brought light into the world, and now you call us to be your light—to tell the good news of your son to those who do not yet know you or have not received you. We pray that we would reflect your light in all that we say and do and that we would do your will every day of our lives. Amen.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Give someone the gift of your presence this Christmas. Reach out to them for coffee or a meal. Spend some time asking about life and their faith. Wherever they are, encourage them with the truth of this passage and ask if you can pray with them. Write down names of people here and commit to contacting them.

You, who made heaven and earth; who created and love each one of your children; who offers us the ultimate Christmas gift. We stress about finding the perfect presents while you wait patiently for us to lift our eyes to your gift of light— your precious son, Jesus Christ. He is the one true, pure, and genuine light, and no earthly possession compares to him and the salvation he bought for us. We desperately need his light to guide us as we navigate the darkness of our sinful and broken world. This Advent season, draw us ever closer to Christ’s light that we may more fully receive him and the joy, hope, and peace he freely gives to all who believe. Help us find ways to share his light with others— our families, our neighbors, our city, and the world. In the strong name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Spend time today asking God to help you see people through his eyes. Take moments to pray specifically for the people you encounter today, as well as those whose stories you hear from around the world. Write down times today you will choose to pray.

How grateful we are for your son Emmanuel: the true light, our hope. Your servant, the apostle John, reveals your truth with power and simple clarity. We are enlightened and deeply moved by exactly what we long to know and understand—the magnitude of your power, grace, and love for us. The true light illuminates everything. What a radical truth for the dark world, where every distinction or difference among us may be used to divide, isolate, exploit, and oppress. May we be people devoted to sharing and reflecting your true light to those in our city and in the world through unity, care, and lifting others up. Help us to see the world around us with clarity, as you do, treasuring each person as your unique and beloved creation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Thank you for becoming flesh, and moving into and living among our neighborhoods. Because you did, we can see your glory with our own eyes. It is a one-of-akind glory: like Father, like Son. You are generous inside and out, true from start to finish. Help us, Lord, to be generous and bring your love into our own neighborhoods. Help us see where our neighbors need our help and your love. Help us expand what we think is our neighborhood to what you see as our neighborhood. Please help us keep John 1:14 on our minds this week as we search for ways to show your love. Thank you for walking alongside us as we venture into our own neighborhood. Amen.

Thank you for this reminder of the amazing gift of your son, whose birth we will celebrate in a couple of days. Through him you chose to dwell, to live with us, to experience joy with us, to suffer with us, and ultimately, to die for us. Before we received and experienced the gift of your son, it was impossible to see your majesty, your glory, and your grace. He showed us the pathway to a relationship with you God, one that we had been unable to discern on our own. For the gift of your son, we are eternally grateful. Jesus also showed us a new way to live. As the embodiment of the truth of your word and as a living example of your infinite grace and forgiveness, he demonstrated how we should live. Help us to live this way. Please help us to grow more like him with every passing day, that we may reflect his goodness and glory in our broken world. Amen.

Gracious Father, Loving Son, Spirit of Truth,

Meditate on the fact that God, out of his grace alone, is bringing his kingdom to our neighborhood and city. He invites you to experience his presence and share in his kingdom-building mission. Then look for ways you can love those you encounter at home, at work, in school, and on our streets in the same way you are loved by God—with the kind of love that seeks the welfare of those he brings along our paths. Write down ways to love others today.

You came to live among us here in our broken world—an act that we can scarcely comprehend. Your kingdom has existed since before the beginning, but you have also brought it into our world in the person of Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. Our lives are still mired in sin and selfishness, but through your grace, we now have hope. Thank you that today we can receive your grace, live in your truth, and grow in our love for you. We pray that as our love for you grows, as we begin to know your presence every day, you will enable us to extend that love to those around us. Lord, use us today as you continue to build your kingdom among us. Amen.

We celebrate the birth of Jesus today. We celebrate the light that has come into the darkness of the world, the darkness of our city, and the darkness of our lives. He is our hope, he is our salvation, and he is the way through. We pray that this Christmas Day, and every day, his light would pierce through the darkest of days, the darkest of places, and the darkest of hearts. May we continue to live out the wonder of his light and love each and every day. Amen.
