Do You Know Your Neighbors? – I was recently at a public safety forum and one of the speakers asked how many people in the room knew the last names of 10 of their neighbors. Not many people did. Our neighborhoods will be safer if you know your neighbors and you never know when you might be able to help them (or you might need their help). You may want to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 303-660-7505 to discuss a Neighborhood Watch Program if you don’t have one already. East-West Regional Trail – Douglas County opened the last section of the EastWest Trail just a couple of weeks ago. The HRCA is a proud partner that provided an easement for this new section of trail through the Backcountry Wilderness Area. The newest section of trail is now open from Highlands Point to the southwest portion of the community. As always, for your safety, remember to stay on all trails. We do have rattlesnakes in Highlands Ranch and it is easier to see a snake or other hazards if you are on the trails, plus the trails have been designed and constructed to avoid important habitat and other natural resources. Going on Vacation? – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office offers a drive by service if you are going to be on vacation. They will check your home for you while you are away. For more information, go to www.dcsheriff.net and click on House Watch Program on the right side of the page under Online Services. Trail Riding – In partnership with the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association, the HRCA will be offering Highlands Ranch horse owners an opportunity to trail ride in some of the best open space land along the Front Range on August 14. Don’t have your own horse? You will be able to rent one for the day. For more details, contact Eric Grover at egrover@hrcaonline.org. This is a special activity on land not normally available to see and your horse doesn’t have to be a quarter horse. Archery Lovers – The HRCA is opening an archery range in July near the Monarch Boulevard Wildcat Mountain Trails System parking lot. Fees can be paid daily or you can buy a season pass. For more information go to www.hrcaonline.org and under the Recreation tab, click on Backcountry Wilderness Area. Fourth of July – I hope you will join us on the Fourth of July for a day-long event beginning with a 5K run, the annual parade, the festival, and culminating with one of the best fireworks shows in the Metro Area. It’s all right here! Highlands Ranch Rodeo – Come and celebrate our Western Heritage on July 10 and 11 at the corner of Plaza Drive and Lucent Boulevard, just south of C470. The Highlands Ranch Rodeo is a rough stock rodeo where cowboys try their skill at riding bareback horses, saddle broncs, and bulls. The Westernaires perform for your pleasure and there are activities for everyone from pony rides to getting your photo taken on a Brahma bull. The arena and grandstand are erected just a week before the Rodeo. Happy Fourth of July!

BOA RD corner By Todd Landgrave, President, Board of Directors Welcome to summer! I hope everyone is taking advantage of the many outdoor activities we have to choose from here in Highlands Ranch. There are weekly summer concerts in the park, trails to hike and ride in the Backcountry, summer day camps, events of all types, and refreshing pools to swim in. Perhaps a 5K run or triathlon is on your schedule this year. Whichever activities you enjoy, we want you to have them right here in the Ranch as we continually endeavor to “Build the Lifestyle You Want to Live”. “Enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events, and leadership” is the mission statement of the HRCA. As a Board, we are focused on the role the HRCA plays in enhancing the value of your home. This focus has many facets. The most obvious may be covenant control. Another one is maintaining reasonable homeowner assessments, currently at $41.67 per month. Obviously, property values are affected by many factors. The most basic is the law of supply and demand and if more people desire to live in Highlands Ranch, then the value of your home will increase. As a Board, we strive to make Highlands Ranch the preeminent community in the Denver metro area in which to live, work, and play. A place where people want to live in order to enjoy first class recreation centers, wilderness trails, parks, open space, concerts, parades, strong educational institutions, and a vibrant business community. We understand that not everyone will use every available amenity. However, even though you may never use the Eastridge climbing wall, the Westridge batting cages, or the Backcountry trail system, if those amenities are important to the person considering a home purchase in Highlands Ranch, the value of your home is likely to increase. In the coming months, the HRCA will be working to determine how to best utilize the unique resource we call the Backcountry Wilderness Area. One initial item of our focus will be an area adjacent to the future Wildcat Regional County Park where we will evaluate an equestrian facility, community garden, and archery range. We plan to share the results of these studies and will be very interested in community input regarding these potential new amenities. For now, we hope you have a wonderful summer and enjoy all that Highlands Ranch has to offer.
