a rt e n c o u n t e r s Art Encounters is a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit designed to promote public interest in art that showcases sculptures, in various media and styles, displayed in Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, Lone Tree, and Parker. This year’s program features 14 sculptures and will be displayed from June 2010 to June 2011. All pieces are available for purchase. Four sculptures will be displayed in Highlands Ranch. The public is encouraged to visit each of the exhibits in each jurisdiction and then vote on a favorite on the Douglas County web site at www.douglas.co.us/artencounters. SUMMER IS HERE AND ITS TIME FOR “STAYCATION” – The HRCA has hundreds of camps, classes, programs and events to keep you and your family healthy, entertained, educated and busy this summer. No need to travel outside of beautiful Highlands Ranch for your vacation plans. Check out the many new programs going on at the Westridge synthetic turf this summer such as lacrosse, flag football, and new kickball and dodge ball programs. Themed summer youth camps for busy kids 5 to 13 years of age are going on all summer. Join us for camps that will celebrate sports, food, science, and nature. Enjoy field trips to a Rockies game, Denver Zoo, and the Museum of Nature and Science as part of these camps. We also have a host of summer events and concerts for your enjoyment and entertainment. Its all right here... with 16 free concerts, the July 4th Celebration and Parade, Carnival, Rodeo, Film in the Park and even the Carson & Barnes Circus which comes back to town! Our Summer Concert Series is the place to be on Thursday nights in June and July from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Highlands Heritage Regional Park. Pack a picnic and join us as we enjoy great music and celebrate the beautiful sunset over the Rockies. POOLS – HRCA outdoor pools are now open for the season, so grab the family and spend the day enjoying the sun and water. LOSS OF A FRIEND TO THE HRCA – The HRCA lost a great friend this past month. Warren Smith was a Delegate for District 113 for seven years. He was a great community leader and contributor as an HRCA Delegate and member of the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. He will be missed. WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLAN CONTINUES – Elk hunting in the Backcountry Wilderness Area began in 2002 under Shea Homes as a necessary vehicle to manage the ever-growing elk herd. As the new stewards of the land, under the advisement of Colorado Division of Wildlife, HRCA plans to continue and refine this wildlife management plan. The HRCA will hold informational meetings regarding the Wildlife Management Elk Hunt Plan in June at the Recreation Center at Eastridge. Look for those dates and additonal information on our web site. SCHOLARSHIP FUND – We were honored to celebrate the recognition of 25 Highlands Ranch students who received $1,000 Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund scholarships to the college of their choice. Find out more about this program on the web site. WEEDS AND MOWING – Now is the time to take care of those pesky weeds and dandelions in your yard. The sooner you get them under control the better for your yard. Mow your yard weekly to prevent the return of unwanted weeds. Enjoy your summer Staycation right here in the Ranch!
