WELCOME HRC PRESIDENT

CHAD GRIFFIN

Dear Friends, When I started this job seven years ago, I never could have imagined all that we would be able to accomplish together. And I am so grateful to have been a part of this incredible organization at such an important moment in the history of our movement – and our nation. The true strength of the Human Rights Campaign comes from our tireless staff and grassroots army of more than 3 million members and supporters – all of you – who are committed to ensuring that full equality reaches every LGBTQ person across America, and around the world. Thanks to you, HRC has never been stronger, or better prepared to tackle the obstacles ahead. That was especially evident as the Equality Act was reintroduced in Congress this spring, with the strongest bipartisan coalition we’ve ever seen on a piece of federal LGBTQ legislation. As of this writing, we have more than 280 cosponsors in Congress and our Business Coalition for the Equality Act has grown to 185 companies. In addition, more than 300 medical, child welfare, religious, and social justice organizations have endorsed the Equality Act. We also know that a majority of Americans – including majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents – support the Equality Act. But even with all this incredible support, we wouldn’t be standing on the precipice of passing this crucial legislation unless you had turned out in force to elect a pro-equality majority in Congress last fall. Because of your contributions, we were able to unleash the full strength of HRC’s 3 million-strong grassroots army and millions of Equality Voters across the country to flip the House and elect new leaders committed to passing the Equality Act as a top priority. This is what happens when LGBTQ people and our allies mobilize, organize and turn out – and now we’re already at work laying the groundwork to build on our gains and win big in 2020.

We can’t afford to let up for one moment – because our work is as urgent as ever. In a majority of states, LGBTQ people are at risk of being fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes, or denied services simply because of who they are. Our community – particularly transgender people – faces a scourge of hate violence, made more deadly by unfettered access to guns. Young people continue to struggle against high rates of bullying, homelessness, and violence just because of who they are. We have yet to end the spread of HIV despite having the tools and technology to achieve an AIDS-free generation. And with each of these challenges, LGBTQ people of color face a disproportionate number of barriers and risks. But you are helping us meet these challenges head on, and turning resistance into action. Through Project One America, we’re advancing nondiscrimination protections across the Deep South. HRC Global continues to forge new partnerships with our colleagues beyond our borders, helping to strengthen the global equality movement. And through the work of the HRC Foundation, we’re combating the spread and stigma of HIV and AIDS, confronting the epidemic of anti-trans hate violence, making workplaces and hospitals more inclusive and safe, and advancing equality from the classroom to the boardroom. There is no doubt that today we face some of our biggest battles yet. But we also face some of our greatest opportunities. And with your continued support, we are ready to seize them. Thank you for standing with us as we continue to move equality forward. In Solidarity,

Chad Griffin President, Human Rights Campaign HRCATLANTA.COM

May 4, 2019 Welcome to the 32nd Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Gala! It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 32nd Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Gala Dinner and Auction. HRC's Annual Dinner is a celebration of the great strides we have made toward equality, and a reminder of the work still ahead. As the cradle of the civil rights movement, let us continue the march toward equality, liberty, and justice for all. As the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature, I'd like to personally thank HRC for their tireless advocacy. Their fight to ensure all members of our LGBTQ family are treated with equal dignity and respect made it possible for me to make history in 2016. I stand on their shoulders, and I look forward to working with HRC to help the next generation of LGBTQ leaders rise up. Together, we have made progress in the great state of Georgia. In 2004, the Georgia State Constitution was amended to prohibit same-sex marriage. Almost ten years later, same-sex marriage became legal in Georgia through the Supreme Court Obergefell opinion. Not only was the equal dignity of LGBTQ Americans recognized and affirmed, so was our constitutional right to marry the person we love. As a member of the largest LGBTQ Caucus in the South, we will continue to make progress by building and strengthening diverse coalitions of common purpose. So, let us celebrate the progress we have made, stand firm in our commitment to equality, and remain ever hopeful for a brighter future. Yours in service,

Rep. Sam Park Deputy Whip Vice Chair, Gwinnett Delegation Georgia State Representative House District 101

DANA GOLDBERG

R

aised by a wild pack of Jews, otherwise known as her mother and siblings, Dana Goldberg is a force of nature on stage. She sets the standard for smart comedy, and her timing and tongue-in-cheek edginess is why she continues to collect loyal fans in cities all over the world. Goldberg’s quick wit and playful stage presence is spreading like wildfire! Voted one of the “Top Five Funniest Lesbians in America,” CURVE Magazine raves, “She’s smart, cute, and seriously funny!” The Irish Post writes, “Dana’s sharp, insightful observations are concealed behind an easy-going chatty style. This makes her one of a handful of comics able to transfer their work across the Atlantic.” Goldberg started her comedy career in 2003 in front of 650 people in a sold out theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seven months into her career she was invited to Scotland by Emmy Award Winning writer Paul Wagner to perform with 13 other American comedians as part of the US Comedy Invasion at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. After returning to the states Goldberg began competing in festivals and competitions all over the country. She was one of five national finalists to perform in the “Wendy’s Good Taste Comedy Challenge” produced by HBO and TBS in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of The Comedy Festival. In 2005 Goldberg was chosen out of thousands of comedians to participate in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. In three short years, she was invited to New York City to share the stage with powerhouse comedians Roz G, Laurie Kilmartin and Judy Gold for the 17th Annual Comedy Hour at Caroline’s On Broadway on behalf of the Ms. Foundation and Gloria Steinem. Since her explosive start, Goldberg has performed in clubs and theaters all over the country, graced two national magazine covers, and performed in 23 states and 7 countries across two continents. In 2006, just three years after she stepped onto the stage for the

30

32nd ANNUAL HRC ATLANTA GALA DINNER & AUCTION

first time, Goldberg put on a producer’s hat and started the Annual Southwest Funnyfest in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each year Goldberg hosts the night of comedy to help benefit New Mexico AIDS Services. She brings the best national female headlining comics to the Land of Enchantment for a night of non-stop, no holds barred, side splitting comedy. Since its inception, the Funnyfest has helped to raise over $15,000 for NMAS and has brought in over a dozen comedians from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central, Late Night With Craig Ferguson, Last Comic Standing and Comics Unleashed. In the summer of 2009, Goldberg starred in her comedy special “One Night Stand Up: Episode 4” on the LOGO network; filmed at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Later that year she recorded her debut DVD “Hot And Bothered: Dana Goldberg Live” in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Emmy award winning comedian David Brenner raves, “One of the best ways to beat the recession is with laughs, and Dana Goldberg offers you one of your best chances to get some in her debut DVD.” After moving to Los Angeles in the fall of 2009, Goldberg found a new comedy home and it wasn’t long before she was headlining nights at world famous clubs like The Laugh Factory and the LA Improv. Goldberg continues to combine her gift of humor with humanitarian efforts raising significant funds to fight HIV/AIDS and joins LGBT communities and organizations across the country to raise national awareness in the fight for equality. In addition to her hilarious comedy and side-splitting performances, Goldberg has shared the national stage with President Barack Obama, Jane Lynch and the cast of GLEE, Lady Gaga, Kathy Griffin, Portia de Rossi, Judy Gold, David Brenner and Kathy Najimy. As the youngest child in a single parent household run by a Jewish mother in which two of three kids are gay, Goldberg helps keep most of the comedy venues and half of the psychotherapists in the country in business.

SPEAKER HRC ATLANTA PRESENTS

U.S. REP. LUCY MCBATH

L

ucia “Lucy” McBath is the Congresswoman for Georgia’s 6th District, and was elected in 2018.

Lucy is a mother, wife, businesswoman and activist for social justice. After a 30-year career with Delta Air Lines, her second career has focused on reform that will make our communities safer and better for every American of every background. Lucy’s passion for public service was awakened by her family’s tragedy in 2012. She is the mother of Jordan Davis, who was shot and killed at a gas station in Jacksonville, Fla. that year by a man objecting to the music he was playing in his car. The shooter used Florida’s stand-yourground law as his defense. He was not found guilty of murder in his first trial. In an October 2014 retrial, the shooter was convicted of firstdegree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Losing her son in such a senseless way has fueled her lifelong commitment to community activism and the importance of political engagement. Early on, McBath’s sense of public service came from an extensive family background involving civil rights. Her father was the Illinois Branch president of the NAACP for over twenty years and served on its national board as well. As a child, she traveled with her family attending marches and rallies supporting the civil rights movement and the coalitions of organizations fighting alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Her mother was a registered nurse, often helping students completing coursework with tutoring and other support to further their healthcare careers. Before running for Congress, Lucy held dual roles as the national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, as well as Faith and Outreach Leader for both. Her work included testifying in state capitols and speaking with lawmakers, activists, universities and community organizers across the county. In Washington, D.C. she has testified before the US Senate Judiciary Committee, lobbied members of Congress, and spoke at the White House Summit on Educational Excellence for African Americans. She served as a surrogate for the Hillary Clinton for President campaign in 2016 as

74

32nd ANNUAL HRC ATLANTA GALA DINNER & AUCTION

one of the “Mothers of The Movement”. Here at home, McBath lobbies Georgia’s Congressional, State House and State Senate delegations to enact common sense gun violence prevention laws that save lives. Lucy’s work in her home community in Cobb County includes creating the “Champion in The Making Legacy Foundation” which provides charitable and educational assistance to graduating high school students attending traditional as well as technical and training colleges and universities – with two recipients attending Kennesaw State University. The foundation has expanded its program with its mentorship program which provides support and guidance in building life skills for the young men and women striving for academic success, with an incubator headquartered in Powder Springs. She serves as Lead Usher at Trinity Chapel (Seven Springs Church) and is an active member with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Marietta / Roswell alumni chapter. McBath’s work has been recognized widely. She is honored to have been the recipient of the Chairman’s Award of the Georgia Democratic Party in 2017, “Mother of the Year 2016” by VH1 Television, voted as one of Refinery29’s 26 National Treasures, and an EMILY’s List Honoree. Her media appearances include Georgia Public Television, CNN, MSNBC, HLN, TV One and her son’s story has been featured in Jet, Rolling Stone, and Ebony and Essence magazines and in the documentaries “The Armor of Light” and “3 ½ Minutes: 10 Bullets.” Lucy was employed by Delta Airlines In-Flight Service for 30 years. She received her B.A. degree in political science from Virginia State University in 1982. Lucy is married, and these days, doesn’t have a lot of free time, but when she does she enjoys motorcycling, serving her church, and walking her beloved dog.

ENTERTAINMENT HRC ATLANTA PRESENTS

ATLANTA FREEDOM BANDS

A

tlanta Freedom Bands was organized after the 1993 Atlanta Pride Parade when founder Buz Carr noticed the absence of a marching band. The initial organization, Atlanta Freedom Marching band grew over the years to become Atlanta Freedom bands and today includes the original Marching Band, as well as the Color Guard, Concert Band, and the MetroGnomes. The MetroGnomes began in 2001 as a saxophone quartet eager to expand their repertoire into Jazz. Since the MetroGnomes have developed into an 18 piece community Big Band playing jazz and swing music from across the generations. Our mission is to promote a positive image of the LGBTQIA community by sharing our musical talents around the Metro Atlanta community. We perform two major events per year for the community to come out

and enjoy – Spring Swing and Swing into the Holidays. This year we are excited to offer an additional concert at OutFront Theatre on June 17th in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall as well as our participation in the annual HRC Gala. Our Spring Swing is on May 18th at Hudson Grille Midtown. Atlanta Freedom Bands (AFB) is a member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, a network of bands in cities across the US, Canada, and Australia. AFB is a 501c3 non-profit charitable organization. WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ Americans. Today, the Trump-Pence administration is determined to roll back equality for millions of LGBTQ people and our families. Our opponents are emboldened and on the attack. With our grassroots army of more than 3 million members and supporters, we are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-LGBTQ LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

Since coming into office, President Donald Trump has surrounded himself with nominees and aides who are avowed opponents of equality. Meanwhile, after seeing nine anti-LGBTQ bills signed into law in 2017 and more than 110 anti-LGBTQ laws introduced by lawmakers in states across the country in 2018, we remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. From so-called “religious freedom” bills that create a “license to discriminate” based on personal religious beliefs, to measures targeting transgender and non-binary people, HRC is going to do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ person in this country.

A FIRM FOUNDATION

Over the past two decades, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation has helped lead a quiet revolution in our country. The Corporate Equality Index has transformed how employers embrace LGBTQ employees — and helped corporate America become one of equality’s greatest champions. The Healthcare Equality Index has dramatically expanded the number of health care facilities guaranteeing inclusive, respectful care for LGBTQ patients. Our Welcoming Schools trainings have cultivated more inclusive classrooms for tens of thousands of students. And our Religion & Faith Program has opened hearts, minds and entire congregations to LGBTQ people and families. Today, we’re committed to reaching millions more.

TRANSGENDER EQUALITY

While we are in an unprecedented time of visibility for transgender Americans, harassment, discrimination and violence persist. HRC is working to educate the public, increase awareness and provide a range of resources on challenges facing the transgender community. From our work in corporate America bringing transgender-inclusive health care policies to millions of employees, to our expanding efforts supporting transgender youth and their parents, teachers and health care providers, HRC is working to eliminate barriers facing transgender people in their lives each and every day and ending the crisis of anti-transgender violence. In addition, HRC’s groundbreaking Parents for Transgender Equality Council brings together the nation’s leading parent-advocates to connect, mobilize and amplify powerful voices of love, inclusion and support for transgender equality.

THE COURTS

When Donald Trump took the oath of office as president on January 20, 2017, he inherited at least 114 federal judicial vacancies — more than double the number passed on to President Obama by his predecessor, and including one on the Supreme Court of the United States. Since then, Trump has constructed a more conservative federal court system, appointing justices like Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, and other extremist judges who will influence our judiciary for decades to come. That is of deep concern to those of us in the LGBTQ community who face discrimination and have frequently relied on the judiciary to protect our basic rights from a barrage of legislative and legal attacks. We will remain vigilant in fighting for a federal judiciary that respects and protects us all from those who seek to deny us our equal rights.

EQUALITY AT THE CITY AND STATE LEVEL

By partnering at the grassroots level with advocacy groups and fair-minded lawmakers, we are working toward equality in many areas across the country. HRC’s field and legal teams closely monitor state and municipal legislation and provide strategy, technical and financial support and staff to elected officials and our coalition partners throughout the country, ensuring our commitment to equality on the ground level. Entering its seventh year, our Municipal Equality Index has helped cities and towns from the heartland to the coasts enact laws, ordinances and policies that improve the lives of LGBTQ people. In addition, our State Equality Index has been providing a roadmap for states in enacting full legal equality.

PROJECT ONE AMERICA

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America — an unprecedented campaign to advance equality in the Deep South. Through permanent presences in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, Project One America is bringing HRC’s work to more LGBTQ people and allies than ever before. With more than a dozen full-time staff and dedicated offices in each of the three states, this is an all-out grassroots campaign at a decisive moment in this movement.

GLOBAL EQUALITY

There are millions of LGBTQ people around the world who are gaining visibility and fighting for their rights, but too many live in fear and isolation – and under the rule of governments that criminalize their very identities. HRC Global strengthens the global equality movement through public education, advocacy, fellowships, partnerships and research. As dangerous new anti-LGBTQ laws emerge around the world from Russia to Nigeria, HRC Global is calling out American organizations that export hate abroad and ensure that U.S. foreign policy protects the human rights of LGBTQ people.

FAIR-MINDED REPRESENTATION

HRC’s Political Action Committee has been among the National Journal’s toprated PACs, with more than 85 percent of our endorsees winning their elections. Since 1980, we have helped elect fair-minded candidates across the country, ensuring that the voice of equality is heard in statehouses and on Capitol Hill.

HRC RISING

In 2017, HRC launched HRC Rising, the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history, aimed to build momentum ahead of the 2018 elections in six key battleground states: Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Since then, HRC has endorsed more than 480 pro-equality candidates nationwide and backed more women and people of color than in any election cycle in its history: 45 percent of HRC’s endorsees were women — including 55 percent of non-incumbent candidates — and nearly one-third were people of color. HRC helped register more than 32,000 voters and helped elect a record number of LGBTQ lawmakers at all levels.

HIV & AIDS

With new advocacy, treatment options and preventative measures revolutionizing the conversation around HIV and AIDS, HRC continues to fight for a robust national response to HIV and AIDS, which still disproportionately affects the LGBTQ community. HRC is proud to help tackle stigma and to lobby for the full funding of critical prevention, treatment and researchprograms, including PrEP, grounded in sound science, not narrow ideology. In the last year alone, we’ve reached more than 5.5 million people, delivering new resources and important messages around HIV prevention, care and treatment.

IN THE COMMUNITY

HRC is committed to ensuring that our outreach efforts reflect the diversity of our movement and the communities where we work and live. Through diverse programs — such as our Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and our Welcoming Schools program — we are working to provide LGBTQ people of color and allies with tools and support to better address the challenges they face at the intersections of racial and anti-LGBTQ discrimination. We also partner with organizations working specifically with people of color to educate the public on the heightened disparities faced by LGBTQ people of color. And as we continue our efforts on HIV and AIDS, we are producing educational resources in both English and Spanish, and elevating the voices of LGBTQ people of color, who continue to be disproportionately affected.

elcome to the 32nd Annual HRC Atlanta Gala Dinner & Auction! Think about why you’re here. Are you here on a corporate ticket? Do you have a friend on the Gala or Steering Committee? Have you been involved for years or is this your first HRC event? Whatever the reason, we’re glad you’re here – with us – because our work is so important and there’s never been a more urgent time to step up.

known as HRC’s major donors) have the option of designating their gifts to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. As the HRC Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity, gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

The Federal Club is a very important, long-term giving program that starts at a minimum of $100 a month. If you are not a Federal Club member, we are asking you to become a member now! By joining the Federal Club, you are joining the ranks of LGBTQ equality leaders as a driving force at the heart of our movement.

At the federal and state level, your support will help to fight multiple efforts to legalize discrimination against our community. Some of these efforts seek to not only legalize discrimination, but also to force states to embrace harmful “conversion therapy”; to invalidate local non-discrimination ordinances that protect LGBTQ people; and to punish transgender people for simply using the restroom.

If you can afford a larger investment in this work, we encourage you to consider becoming a Federal Club Council member. The Federal Club Council is comprised of donors making annual gifts starting at $5,000. Federal Club Council members (also

Your investment in equality could not come at a more critical time in our fight for full equality for everyone, everywhere. Radical anti-LGBTQ forces in the White House, Congress and in state houses across the country are determined to undo the progress we’ve made.

To members of our families, our friends and allies – we ask you to join us tonight in expanding and diversifying our membership. There will never be a better time to join us than right now.

WHAT IS THE EQUALITY ACT? The Equality Act would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. The Equality Act would amend existing civil rights law — including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Jury Selection and Services Act, and several laws regarding employment with the federal government — to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics. The legislation also amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination in public spaces and services and federally funded programs on the basis of sex. Additionally, the Equality Act would update the public spaces and services covered in current law to include retail stores, services such as banks and legal services, and transportation services. These important updates would strengthen existing protections for everyone. Decades of civil rights history show that civil rights laws are effective in decreasing discrimination because they provide strong federal remedies targeted to specific vulnerable groups. By explicitly including sexual orientation and gender identity in these fundamental laws, LGBTQ people will finally be afforded the exact same protections as other covered characteristics under federal law.

States that lack explicit protections against employment and housing discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity.

ABOUT

T

he Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Our vision of a fair and equal world starts with the most basic aspects of daily life — family, work and community. HRC represents a grassroots force of more than 3 million members and supporters working every day to make LGBTQ equality a reality.

GOALS

This year, HRC is taking on our most ambitious agenda ever.

• Working to aggressively fight threats to equality and to resist the politics of hate by accelerating progress in states from coast-to-coast, fueling pro-equality candidates and initiatives; • Mobilizing millions of “Equality Voters” in the 2018 elections and beyond to pull the emergency brake on the Trump-Pence administration’s hate-fueled agenda and make sure our voices are heard at the ballot box; • Building a coalition of local partners to bolster efforts to advance equality, defend the LGBTQ community against attacks and lay the groundwork for future pro-equality legislative victories; • Ensuring LGBTQ patients and their families are treated equally when accessing health care; • Ensuring that health care providers give culturally competent care to LGBTQ people, and educating the public and providers about HIV prevention, treatment and care strategies;

OUR TIME IS NOW

A WAVE OF VICTORIES FOR LGBTQ & PROEQUALITY CANDIDATES

• Continuing to lead corporate America to institute equal workplace policies and practices; • Building diverse coalitions of religious leaders who are LGBTQ-supportive and empowering people of faith to advocate on behalf of transgender people; • Collaborating with LGBTQ movements and leaders across the globe to support their work, and exposing the efforts of American exporters of hate; • Reducing bullying through passing federal legislation addressing anti-LGBTQ bullying and discrimination, and getting at the root of bullying with our Welcoming Schools program’s tools for elementary schools; and • Finding permanent families for children by helping child welfare professionals implement a program to promote fairness for LGBTQ foster and adoptive parents.

Appreciating differences makes the difference. Turner is now WarnerMedia, and we’re not WarnerMedia without diversity. It’s part of who we are at our core. That’s why we’re proud to be a part of the HRC Atlanta Dinner and Auction. It’s not simply about celebrating diversity, it’s about living it every day.
