n behalf of the Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Steering and Dinner Committees, we welcome you to the 30thAnnual Gala Dinner and Auction! Together We Stand. United We Win. Doesn’t that ring true even as we celebrate a monumental 30 years? When we sat down to conjure up the theme for this milestone year, we didn’t yet know what the outcome of the elections would be. We were still mourning the tragedy that took place in Orlando, FL and we were still on a high from 2015’s marriage equality ruling. We wanted to show solidarity across our diverse community: lesbian, gay, ally, queer, transgender, bisexual, black, white, Latinx, Asian, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, people with disabilities and so on. We are as culturally rich as the human fabric of the world. We also want it to be clear that “we won’t be silenced; we won’t go back into the closet and hide. Find the courage to accept our differences and live in peace, respectfully.” As thoughtful as our approach was with our theme, so was the methodology for tonight’s event. We’ve planned a memorable program for you this evening and we sincerely thank you for your commitment and support to continue with our mission of true equality across our community. It is our pleasure to honor two advocates for the LGBTQ community this evening. The Leon Allen and Winston Johnson Community Leadership Award will honor the work Latino LinQ does to create equal opportunity for all by empowering Latinxs across Georgia to adapt, integrate and thrive. The Dan Bradley Humanitarian award is being presented to The Pansy Patrol for their commitment and
bravery in silencing hate with love and pansies. We thank our generous and smart sponsors and donors. Your continued visibility and support for the LGBTQ community has influenced local and national legislation and are fostering safe workplaces for millions of their employees. A heartfelt thank you to our talented and dedicated Dinner Committee members who’ve put in countless hours of work to bring this event to life. We wish to extend special gratitude for your amazing dedication and energy. From 1988 to the present, your enthusiasm, creativity and ideas have driven HRC in Atlanta and beyond. None of our achievements tonight would have been possible without you. To our families, spouses, partners, friends and loved ones, we want to especially thank you for standing with us for this fight in which we so strongly believe. And finally, we wish to show our gratitude to the many members and staff of HRC for your participation in the ongoing mission of reaching full equality across all parts of our lives in the United States. We look forward to you celebrating and renewing your commitment towards equality with tonight’s program. We truly hope you enjoy this special evening of fun, celebration and equality! Yours in Equality,

WELCOME HRC President
CHAD GRIFFIN GRIFFIN
D
ear Friends, Today, we stand ready to confront some of the greatest challenges our movement has ever faced. Everything we’ve fought for, and everything we’re still fighting for, is on the line — and we’re not backing down a single inch. After a year in which we learned just how far and wide the roots of hate and bigotry stretch, we know we must work harder, dig deeper and fight like never before for the equal rights and fundamental dignity that all LGBTQ people deserve. We face a president and a Congress that stand opposed to our most fundamental values, and a wave of hateful bills in state legislatures across the country. In a majority of states, LGBTQ people remain at risk of being fired, evicted, or denied services simply because of who they are. Our community — particularly transgender people — still faces a scourge of hate violence, made more deadly by unfettered access to guns. Young people continue to struggle against high rates of bullying, homelessness, and violence just because of who they are. And we have yet to end the spread of HIV despite having the tools and technology to achieve an AIDS-free generation. But thanks to you, HRC is leading the way forward. We are at the forefront of the fight in Congress for the Equality Act — historic federal legislation that would finally end the unacceptable patchwork of non-discrimination laws across this country that threaten the livelihoods of LGBTQ Americans. But we’re not just fighting for our rights, we’re also fighting to protect our rights. We’re standing up to any attempt by President Trump and anti-equality members of Congress to rollback our hardwon gains. And as our opponents work to pass legislation in states across the country targeting LGBTQ people, we’re working to defeat
hateful bills that attack the transgender community and put this state’s economy in peril. HRC is also expanding the frontiers of our fight for equality through programs like Project One America, which is moving equality forward in the Deep South. Our work through HRC Global is helping to build partnerships with our allies abroad to strengthen the global equality movement. We’re expanding the groundbreaking work of the HRC Foundation — which educates and helps build better, more inclusive communities for LGBTQ people in workplaces, classrooms, hospitals and churches — everywhere from the town hall to the corporate board room. Most of all, we’re working to break down the walls of hate and discrimination that continue to hold us back, and put too many at risk. In the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, we cannot afford to let up in stomping out hate wherever it is allowed to persist. Our community is as diverse as the fabric of our nation. And we have all come too far and fought too hard to allow hatred to drag us backwards. At a time like this, we don’t slow down — we double down, undeterred and focused on our mission to realize a world in which every single LGBTQ person is safe and equal and valued. Your support has allowed HRC to reach new heights. By standing with us, you make us stronger. And together, there is nothing we can’t achieve. Sincerely,
Chad Griffin President, Human Rights Campaign

April 22, 2017 Greetings: As Mayor of the City of Atlanta, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 30th Annual Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Gala. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) works tirelessly to improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. I am proud to be both a resident and the Mayor of a City that is a partner in an effort to move us all forward in our thinking and in our relations with one another. The past year has brought tremendous progress in attaining equal rights and treatment for LGBT individuals. HRC has been an individual partner in these achievements and is essential to the continued efforts for LGBT equality. Like HRC, the Atlanta City Council, my Administration and I are committed to fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Atlanta’s devotion to genuine fairness has fostered one of the most vibrant LGBT communities in the country, and our diversity is part of what makes our City great. I applaud your dedication and commitment toward achieving LGBT equality. My hope is that your gathering tonight will further inspire your important work. On behalf of the people of Atlanta, I extend best wishes for a memorable and successful event. Sincerely,
Mayor Kasim Reed

February 13, 2017 Greetings! Welcome to The 30th Annual Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Gala! Thank you for joining the host committee for tonight’s very special occasion taking place on the border of Georgia House District 58. Your presence at this table is a driving force that moves mountains for our friends in the struggle for LGBTQ+ justice. When we think of our unsung fighters, we are reminded of the people who may never know that we are gathered here tonight. We are here for them—so let’s work until they feel it. The way we ensure that our community members feel the strength of our movement is we continue to educate, advocate and agitate until we dull the pain and heartache of the circumstances under which our neighbors are being denied fair treatment, being questioned, or being ignored. Make no mistake about it; the stakes are toughening-- especially in the South! The political headwinds that the Human Rights Campaign will face are blowing strong with alternative facts, executive orders, and unconstitutional actions, but that’s nothing new to us. We know that on the bright side, today’s environment is one in which, standing together to overcome the forces arrayed against us is not a lonely task. We know that 3 million more Americans chose love than hate in November of 2016 and that the willingness of our people to get out of our homes, publicly stand in the streets and say “This is Unacceptable!” is fueling grassroots campaigns, neighborhood town-halls, and civic dinners that have positive social impacts. As we face a hard climb in the coming years, know that our company is good, large, and forcefully resolute. Americans feel the glowing warmth of diversity now, so let’s continue to bring everyone into the fold. Standing with you for justice,

Saturday, April 22, 2017 Welcome to the 30th Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Gala! It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 30th Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Gala Dinner and Auction. HRC's Annual Dinner is a celebration of the great strides we have made toward equality, and a reminder of the work still ahead. As the cradle of the civil rights movement, let us continue the march toward equality, liberty, and justice for all. As the newly elected State Representative of Georgia House District 101, I'd like to personally thank HRC for their tireless advocacy. Their fight to ensure all members of our LGBTQ family are treated with equal dignity and respect made it possible for an openly gay man to serve in the Georgia General Assembly. I stand on their shoulders, and I look forward to working with HRC to help the next generation of LGBTQ leaders rise up. I have been amazed by the progress our great State has made as a native Georgian. Thirteen years ago in 2004, the Georgia State Constitution was amended to prohibit same-sex marriage. The Obergefell opinion unleashed a wave of discriminatory "religious liberty" legislation. And for three years, with the help of HRC, we defeated those harmful measures in Georgia. Today, it is nearly impossible to pass any legislation in Georgia that would discriminate or harm our LGBTQ family. It is no mere coincidence that Georgia has the most out LGBTQ state legislators in the South. Stopping harmful legislation is only the beginning of our march towards equality. As a freshman legislator, I had the great honor of co-sponsoring comprehensive statewide civil rights legislation earlier this year. This would prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations. By building and strengthening diverse coalitions of common purpose, we have the opportunity to make this a reality. So, let us celebrate the progress we have made, stand firm in our commitment, and hope for a brighter future. Yours in service, Sam Park State Representative House District 101 Georgia General Assembly

ABOUT THIS AWARD As one of the founders of Human Rights Campaign Fund in 1980, Dan Bradley distinguished himself throughout his career as a courageous champion of civil rights. In June 1979, he was named by President Jimmy Carter to lead the Legal Services Corporation, a civil legal aid agency for the poor. In 1982, after more than 15 years of government service, Dan publicly announced his homosexuality and became the highest-ranking Presidential appointee ever to do so. He later accepted appointments on the boards of the Gay Rights National Lobby and the Lambda Legal Defense Fund. Dan was also the inspiration behind the historic demonstration at the White House on June 1, 1987 where he proudly led 64 gay and lesbian leaders to jail in a symbolic act of civil disobedience. A Georgia native and graduate of Mercer University, Dan passed away in January 1988 at 47 years old. The Dan Bradley Humanitarian Award is presented to an individual or group who continues Dan’s legacy of activism and service to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

The Leon Allen and Winston Johnson Community Leadership Award is named for two longtime leaders of the Atlanta LGBT Community. Leon Allen and Winston Johnson were two of the original committee members for the first two HRC dinners in Atlanta, beginning in 1988. As longtime civic rights activitsts, they became close friends with Coretta Scott King, and helped her use her high public figure profile to advocate for the rights of LGBT persons. Because of their efforts, Mrs. King became the keynote speaker at the HRC dinner in New York City in 1986, and one of the community’s strongest allies for the rest of her days. Leon and Winston where together for 42 years until Leon’s death from Parkinson’s disease in February 2006, two weeks after Mrs. King’s passing. The Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Steering Committee presents this award each year to the individual or group who offers distinguished service and leadership for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. This award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who dedicated not only substantial time and energy, but also spirit and whole-hearted commitment to a dvance the f ight of o ur civil rights. WHAT WE DO The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ Americans. Donald Trump and Mike Pence campaigned on rolling back equality for millions of LGBTQ people and our families, and our opposition is emboldened and on the attack, attempting to advance state legislation designed to undermine our progress and targeting our historic federal gains. With a grassroots force of more than 2 million members and supporters nationwide, HRC is working every day to counter these attacks and work toward full equality.
ANTI-LGBTQ LEADERS AND LEGISLATION
Since his election in November, Donald Trump has been surrounding himself with nominees and aides who are avowed opponents of equality. Meanwhile, after seeing more than 200 legislative challenges to LGBTQ equality in more than 30 states during 2016, we are expecting another challenging year and remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our hard-earned victory. From so-called “religious freedom” bills aimed at permitting discrimination based on personal religious beliefs, to measures targeting transgender and gender-nonconforming people, HRC is going to do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ person in this country.
PROJECT ONE AMERICA
In 2014, HRC launched Project One America — an unprecedented campaign to advance equality in the Deep South. Through permanent presences in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, Project One America is bringing HRC’s work to more LGBTQ people and allies than ever before. With more than a dozen full-time staff and dedicated offices in each of the three states, this is an all-out grassroots campaign at a decisive moment in this movement.
GLOBAL EQUALITY
Over the past two decades, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation has helped lead a quiet revolution in our country. The Corporate Equality Index has transformed how employers embrace LGBTQ employees — and helped corporate America become one of equality’s greatest champions. The Healthcare Equality Index has dramatically expanded the number of healthcare facilities guaranteeing inclusive, respectful care for LGBTQ patients. Our Welcoming Schools trainings have cultivated more inclusive classrooms for tens of thousands of students. And our Religion & Faith Program has opened hearts, minds and entire congregations to LGBTQ people and families. Today, we’re committed to reaching millions more.
In 2011, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared before the United Nations in Geneva that “LGBT rights are human rights.” That same year, President Obama told the nation that the “struggle to end discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons is a global challenge, and one that is central to the United States’ commitment to promoting human rights.” These fundamental truths are the core principles of HRC Global, a major effort to strengthen the global equality movement and counter American extremists attempting to export anti-LGBTQ laws and sentiments around the world. As dangerous new anti-LGBTQ laws emerge across the globe from Russia to Nigeria, HRC Global is fighting to call out American organizations that export hate abroad and ensure that American foreign policy protects the human rights of LGBTQ people — strengthening the global equality movement through partnerships and fellowships with LGBTQ organizations and advocates around the world.
TRANSGENDER EQUALITY
FAIR-MINDED REPRESENTATION
A FIRM FOUNDATION
While we are in an unprecedented time of visibility for transgender Americans, harassment, discrimination and violence persist. HRC is working to educate the public, increase awareness and provide a range of resources on challenges facing the transgender community. From our work in corporate America bringing transgender-inclusive healthcare policies to millions of employees, to our expanding efforts supporting transgender youth and their parents, teachers and healthcare providers, HRC is working to eliminate barriers such as the crisis of anti-transgender violence facing transgender people in their lives each and every day.
THE COURTS
When Donald Trump took the oath of office as president January 20, he inherited at least 114 federal judicial vacancies — including one on the Supreme Court of the United States — more than double the number passed on to President Obama from his predecessor. Trump has already pledged to construct a more conservative Supreme Court, appointing justices like Antonin Scalia, and he will have an unprecedented opportunity to shape the judiciary in a way that will reverberate through our lifetimes. That is of deep concern to those of us in the LGBTQ community who face discrimination and have frequently relied on the judiciary to protect our basic rights from a barrage of legislative and legal attacks. We will remain vigilant in fighting for a federal judiciary that respects and protects us all from those who seek to deny us our equal rights.
EQUALITY AT THE CITY AND STATE LEVEL By working at the grassroots level with advocacy groups and fair-minded lawmakers, we are working toward equality in many areas across the country. HRC’s field and legal teams closely monitor state and municipal legislation and provide strategy, technical and financial support, and staff to elected officials and our coalition partners throughout the country, ensuring our commitment to equality on the ground level. Entering its fourth year, our Municipal Equality Index (MEI) has helped cities and towns from the heartland to the coasts enact laws, ordinances and policies that improve the lives of LGBTQ people. In addition, our State Equality Index (SEI) for two years has been providing a roadmap for states in enacting full legal equality.
HRC’s Political Action Committee has been among the National Journal’s top-rated PACs, with more than 85 percent of our endorsees winning their elections. Since 1980, we have helped elect fair-minded candidates across the country, ensuring that the voice of equality is heard in statehouses and on Capitol Hill. HRC provides candidates a range of support, including staff time, messaging development, fundraising and volunteers.
HIV AND AIDS
With new advocacy, treatment options and preventative measures revolutionizing the conversation around HIV and AIDS, HRC continues to fight for a robust national response to HIV and AIDS, which still disproportionately affects the LGBTQ community. HRC is proud to help tackle stigma and to lobby for the full funding of critical prevention, treatment and research programs including PrEP grounded in sound science, not narrow ideology. In the last year alone, we’ve reached more than 5.5 million people, delivering new resources and important messages around HIV prevention, care and treatment.
IN THE COMMUNITY
HRC is committed to making sure that our outreach efforts reflect the diversity of our movement and the communities where we work and live. Through diverse programs — such as the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and our Welcoming Schools program — we are working to provide LGBTQ people of color and allies with tools and support to better address the challenges they face at the intersections of racial and antiLGBTQ discrimination. We also partner with organizations working specifically with people of color to educate the public on the heightened disparities faced by LGBTQ people of color. And as we continue our efforts on HIV and AIDS, we are producing educational resources in both English and Spanish, and elevating the voices of LGBTQ people of color, who continue to be disproportionately affected.

he Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. HRC represents a grassroots force of more than 2 million members and supporters working every day to make LGBTQ equality a reality.
GOALS

HEADLINE HRC
BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL The HRC Business Council was founded in 1997 to support the Human Rights Campaign’s goal of creating an America where lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people are ensured of basic equal rights — and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community. While not necessarily serving as official representatives of their companies, members provide expert advice and counsel on LGBT workplace issues based on their business experience and knowledge.
