HE astounding story of the past Season's activities of the H. R. Harmer Organisation is one of such outstanding success that the description fantastic almost seems an under-statement. For the first time in its history, the total realisation for the Season, including private treaty transactions exceeded O N E MIL L I O N P O U N D S S T E R LI N G

This reflects not only the ever-increasing faith that vendors have in selling through the Harmer Organisation, but also shows effectively the wonderful strength of the philatelic market itself.
rlew (JJ.o,.k AGA I A RE C ORD $ 1,702,834, representing more than the tota l for the two previous Seaso ns added together ! The reason was the sale, during the Season , of the first four, of the ixteen, auct io ns of the celebrated Alfred H. Caspary Co llectio n. These four auctio ns alone brought $954,351. What is most pleasing however is that, despite the considerab le work entai led in holding these special auctio ns, we sold for a total of $748,483 excluding these, a figure o nly $52,706 below the record of the previous Seaso n, 1954-55. Twenty-six a uction cata logues were issued, comprisi ng 74 se sio ns, compared with 22 ca talogues a nd 7 J sessions in 1954-55. 28, I 87 lots were offered, 5,227 less tha n the previo us Seaso n. United States and Possessions were represented by 11,945 lots, being 42 % of the total lots sold compare d with 9,964 lots and 30 % of the tota l for the previous Season. Prices generally showed a n improvement , particu la rly evident for" qua lity " mat eria l. Some modern Europeans also ha rdened, in certa in instances very consi dera bly. Dem and overa ll widened, partially due to a greater act ivity of overseas buying, particularly from Europe. United States pa rticipat ion in the auctions increased by ap pro ximate ly 20 %. Extreme interest was shown for the classic quality items
from the four Caspary a uction s. Fears that present-day taxation levels would reduce interest in the ' ' $ 10,000-up " i terns proved unfounded a nd on April 23rd $20,000 was paid by a ew Yorker for the Baden 9 kreuzer error of colour on cover, the highest rea lisation obtai ned in the United States for a single stamp, a nd the highest price ever recorded for a Europea n stamp anywhere. Th e a uctio ns included , in the o rder of total realised:" Caspary " Sale Two- United States 18471857-61 $296, 189 " Caspary " Sale Thr ee-Co nfederate Postmasters' Pro visionals $234,699 " Caspary " Sale One- Postm asters' Provisiona ls $225,340 " Caspary " Sa le Four - German States, Part One ... $ 198,123 " R obert P. N otable were the four Caspa ry catalogues , which are already" collector's items."
cS,,,dne11 The steady grow th of our Australi an House was co ntinued durin g the past yea r. ln common with the world trend, some modern issues were weaker, but prices were genera lly ma intained at a satisfactory level. The seaso n was a n intere ting one and reflected the steady increase in the demand for first class mater ia l especia lly unusua l items ; the ear ly Australian States, Ka ngaroos a nd George V issues of Australi an Commonwea lth a nd most of the Pacific Islands commanded excellent prices throughout the year. The market for foreign issues continued to show increased dema nd and more Collectors in Australia appear to be seeking the classic issues from Europe an countries. Severa l outstand ing Austra lian owned co llect ions were brok en up and sold duri ng the year by a uction , the more important prop erties being the •· Gowrie " Collec tion of George V, British Colo nies rea lising over £2,000 and the " Upstill " Collection of Australian Commonwealth which realised over £ 1,000. Th e outstanding piece sold in ovember last a nd considered a great rarity in Australi an Commonwea lth,
was a complete mint right pane of the 19 16 Id. red showing the " rusted cliches," thin " G " a nd strok e o n " Y " with " J .B.C." Co ntrol. This piece realised £525 a nd although purchased by a n Australi a n Collector is now hou sed in England. Th e actual selling of this lot was bro adcast through the A.B.C. News of the Day. Several " Executor " sales were also a feature of the seaso n and it is pleasing to record that a numb er of properties were sold on instructions received fro m Australian Trust Compa nies, showi ng evidence of their fait h in Auction as the most satisfacto ry method of sale a nd in H . R. Ha rmer Pty. Ltd . as the most reliable and efficient to carry out such disposals . An increased volume of business has been noticea ble during the yea r with overseas clients and in particul ar those in the United States, Ca nada a nd New Zea land. Ea rly sales for the coming seaso n include many scarce items in ea rly Australian States, sca rce pieces of Australian Commonwea lth and Pacific Isla nds while the 100th Sydney Sa le to be held in ovem ber next is expected to set a new record for a o ne-day sale in Australia , and prospect s for the month s to follow appear to be excellent.

fluclicn The cover design of our last Resume for 1954-55 was in the form of a graph and showed a combined total of Auction Sales at over £650,000.
January included two exceptional Sales, one covering a lovely array of Foreign with strong Germ an States, a nd Herrn E. Kuhn 's Switzerland - sent from that country also really superlative South Americans which excited remarkable competition in an £8,000 Auction.
London 's share was a World Record figure of £368,000 in a very exceptiona l season, and exexceeded it predecessor by over One could scarcely £90,000. expect that it would again be improved on, but l 955-56 finished as our second best Season with a total of £327,522, a handsome figure by any computation. The Seaso n opened on September 12 with a £7,000 World Sa le includ ing a group from the estate of Charles Herbert Wood , F.R .P.S.L. Two excellent Commonwe a lth Sales followed, the second including the extensive Collection from Sir Archibald Alison Bart. , O.B.E., R. . Attractive Empire and Foreign Sales followed in October, outstanding being a fine lot of Ind ia l 854 covers and the 88-Volume Europea n Collection so ld for the Executors of Dr. Wilfred M. Anthony who had amassed stamps over some fifty years.
Collectors of Great Britain with longer memories will recall Hr. Per Gjerding of orway, an old client whose Gold Medal Gre at Britain formed the basis of the £ 11,700 Sale in mid-Janu ary. It included, incident ally, the on ly " four-figure " stamp of the London Season the 10/- Edward I.R . Official.
only without any perforated stamps must be unique-even if it did include a couple of rouletted Cape triangul a rs. The quality of this, the " Pav itt " Collection , was exceptional, particu larly in the New South Wales Sydney Views a nd the prices were equally high a nd satisfactory. A two -day Sa le of five countries
£8,000 was made in the two-day Auction of the bulk of ovember. the "William Glossop " St. Vincent in Th e main Collection of these attractive issues was made some forty years ago with lovely pieces from the " Castle" and the Earl of Crawford 's Collections. The realisations were of the same high sta ndard as the stamps. The first really big Collection to be sent from the Continent for Sa le in London took six days at the end of November when M. Roger Leret sold his World Collection for over £32,000. The 89-page Art Catalogue with 25 plates a nd 26 inset illustrations did justice to a fine classic and modern accumulat ion of high grade stamps. The Sale drew the biggest volume of postal and room bidding we have seen for many years. The " Sinton " Rhodesi as ope ned the D ecember Sales, whilst the December 12 Auction was enlivened by an enthusiastic Collector who 'pho ned the rostrum from Los Angeles at the break of dawn. (see page 32).
China and Hong Kong , West fndies and choice Foreign and Commonwe a lth groups followed with, in late February, the choice Cape of Good Hope Collection formed by the late Jack Shepherd of Brakp a n, Transv aa l. A keen student, his death was a great loss to South African philately. There is- justifiably - talk of the weakness of the George VI market , but , on the rare occasions when the rarities come along, prices are a lways good. This was clearly demonstrated on Ma rch 5 when a fine Collection wa offered. The bala nce of the " Glossop " African and West Ind ian Colonie followed making over £10,000 in an out landing Sale in which excellent price ruled throughout. The owner wrote ... " I should like to express my apprecia tion for the efficient manner in which you have handled this matter".
In an £8_000 Sale on April 16, 17 choice Gambias confirmed the attraction of the unusual Cameos, but the limelight was stolen by the British tete-beche booklet discovered at Leicester . The realisation of £550 is believed to be a record for any booklet - but more about this fascinating 2/6 discover y will be found on page 32. A wide range of Collections of man y different countries
received from many different countries followed, one of the most interesting being the Boer Wa r gro up on May 14. After the Whitsun break George VJ Seychelles, Cape of Good Hop e, Ceylon, Albania , Bra zil, Denmark , Egypt and Mexico were all well represented . ln mid-June a very fine World Collection in 90 Volumes , originally formed in Switzerland was sold for Mr. a nd Mrs . A. Ehrman of London for the excellent total of £12,500. The German, British and orwegian sections were quite exceptional. Empire Collections with stro ng specialised sections of Falklands , Great Brit ain, St. Vincent (numerous " Polignac" covers) and other lesser sectio ns closed an exciting Sale on Jul y 11. Forty catalogues (o ne less than the previous) with 85 sessions and 22,554 lots gave an average of just under £16 per lot for the season.
" I consider the result most satisfactory, and the stamps realised far more than I expected to get." Col. G. S. H ., Camberley, Surrey.

ith a satisfactory total for Private Treat y transW actions of over £72,500, the Season ca n fairly be
described as both interesting and varied. This app lies not only to the range of Collections and individual pieces and the sources from which they emanated , but also, in quite a number of cases, to their ultimate destinations. Jn addition to a number of General and Commonwealth Collections sold in September, one exceptiona l property, a four-volume special ised collection of Southern Rhodesia was placed at £3,000. An outstanding collection of Empire issues with practically all the big Edward VII rarities was the outstanding feature in October at over £6,000. ovember included such diverse groups as a collection of Ja panese Burm as, the" Avery "Sirmoors (eight volumes) , Nyasaland Artists ' proofs - and a two volume" Hitl er" Cape Triangular items reaching " four collection! figures " are necessarily unusual, but the double letter sheet bearing a single Woodblock Id. red a nd a " block " of three including the 4d. error is obviously one. This superb piece was previously handled by us at Auction in December 1939, when it made £450 against the new figure of £1,350. A three volume Roumanian collection changed owners at £1,275 and (in co-operation with our New York H ouse) four-volumes of Air Proofs and Essays at nearly £ 1,000. A specialised collection of Albania in two volumes was quickly sold for £450, followed by a World collection at £725, and eight volumes of British Commonwealth at £840. Numerous transactions in the " hundreds" were a feature of the early ew Year, one item, a part perf .
he heavy publicity devoted to the Caspary sale and T the realisations tended to sway collectors who
previously might have considered sale priv ate ly towards auction as a means of disposal. Despite this however severa l notable properties were sold through the H. R. Harmer, Inc. Private Treaty Department. These included Collections of France and Colonies for $12,000, Air Post Proofs $2,500, United States Pro ofs $950.
block of Gre at Britain E.11 6d. making an interesting news story at the time of the London ational Exhibition. An Empire collection found a new owner at £825 a bout the same time. March included specialised collections of Ceylon, Australian Commonwealth, Trinidad and ether landsall in the hundreds. Apart from a U.S. co llection at £1,450, an Alsace cover at £175 and a three-volume George VI collection at £350, April was rat her uneventful. An Executor co llection of Commonwealth issues was disposed of in the following month for £1,400, and a General collection, also from an Estate , so ld for £270. The sale of a n unusu al Japanese local, the " Sutherland " ¼Boo in auction brought to light a further example in Ireland which was sold to Japan at £55. In the closing months of the Season a volume of Austria and Lombardy postm a rks made £6 I 5, an Empire group £225, a twenty -two volume World collection £340, Japanese Burm a Occupation issues £400, a mint block of four of Bahrain E. l I "½" omitted £120 and ear ly Brazils £300. At the end of August a dealer's stock from overseas made £1,200. Eig ht indi vidua l deals encompassed a range from £ 1,200 to over £9,000 including some transactions on which, at the owners' request , details a re not published; plus hundreds of lesser sales which doubtless brought pleasure to many collectors at home and abroad but are not necessarily of great moment to the reader - unless perhaps he may be a potential vendor , in which event he may well wish to become one of the many satisfied Private Treaty Vendors in the current Season.
Three Gener al Collections were placed at $3,500 , $2,575 and $1,500, three British Commonwealth properties at $2,100, $800 and $400 . A Collection of Jamaica brought $900 from an overseas buyer, whilst several other Colonial collections sold for between $200 and $500. A number of collections, including the Air Post Pro ofs mentioned above were sold overseas th rough liaison with our London House . The total was slight ly over $88,000.
" I am obliged to yo u for the trouble you have taken on my behalf, and assure you that any further transactions will certainly Dr . W. M. W., Durham be submitted for yo ur consideration".

Rusted Cliches " Rusted cliches" may not evoke excitement in th e breasts of many people, but to specia list co llectors of Australian Comm onwealth issues, the terl)1has a lmost the mag ic of a go ld stri ke. Durin g Wor ld War I, the steel used for th e produ ct ion of stamp print ing plates was found to be soft, and a prepa red plate was put into storage. Th e plate, o f the Id . value, was used in J 9 I6- prob ably to suppl y a demand at C hri stm as time- when it was found th at the prot ective vaseline coating had been disturb ed by rats, ca using damage and rusti ng to two adjoi ning cliches.

Catalogue Costs When, in 195 1, the Londo n Hou se increased the com bined surface -ma il C(ltalogue and Prices Realized charge to ÂŁ 1 I0s. we hoped that this was a tempor ary measu re. Ho wever, since that date a ll costs of Cat alogue productio n, illustrations, setting , envelopes a nd postage have increased very considera bly. Neverth eless, we do not intend to ra ise the charge at present , and hope that thi s step will not be necessary.
Open Carefully Re cently some covers were sold bear ing Mexican stamps, a nd co llected by that well-known philatelist , the late Samue l Chapman. Going thro ugh them what was noticeable was the extremely carefu l and neat manner in which he had opened the envelopes, and how att ract ive they appea red when mounted . How much neater such ca refully opened covers appear than those which ha ve been roug hly handled! For some years Mr . Cha pman lived at Sevenoaks, in Kent. lt is not the only place to rejoice in that name. One of the covers addressed to him ther e was sent by the " Cooperat iva Filate lica " in Mexico City. In tra nsit. the commu nicat ion had lost its way. It bore a neat ly sta mped two-line mark in red reading " Missent to Seven Oaks, Ca lif." Someone, doubtl ess in the Cal ifornian post office, had pencilled below the ma rk, " Tr y Sevenoaks, England ".

''T.J.E." The great loss to Philately occasioned by the sudden death in September last of Trevor J. Edwards was acknowledged by the tributes in the Press, and even more strikingly, by the great number of letters received in Bond Street from his many friends at home and abroad. Joining the firm in 1939, he had been, for the past seventeen years, a familiar figure in both trade and amateur philatelic circles, and conducted most of the Bond Street Auctions during that period. In addition, he travelled extens ively throughout the country as a lecturer and competition judge at society meetings, where his cheerful and helpful personality gained for him- and Philately- many friends. By his colleagues in Bond Street his death is felt as a personal loss, and in the wider circles of town and country he will be sadly missed. We are surely echoing the sentiments of many when we say that the memory of "T.J.E ." will long be associated with au that is best in Philately.

ow rare ly do ou r morning pa pers devote space to a co nsiderat ion of matters philatelic! It is more than passing stra nge that, while our breakfast fare is regu larly regaled with substantial stori es of the prices realized by antiqu es and paintings et cetera , scarce a mention is made of the real ization s of philate lic properties in the a uction roomsoccasionally a line or two is devoted to them, compa red with the several inches o r more that are frequ ently allocate d to the desiderata of co llectors in other fields. Yet the tot a l rea lizat ions of stamps are oft-times equal to or greater than those of other collectab le items .
H
The reason for such widespre ad apparent lack of appreciation of the efforts of philatelists and the value of their properties is difficult to ascertain . It cannot with ju stification be any factual doubt a bout the reliabi lity of the stamp market. The oft repeated stateme nt that stamps are a stab le form of investment is proved to be true over an d over aga in. Stamps are not only a staple investment but a lso one which often app reciates. Especia lly is this true of superb pieces in superlative condition. Such pieces form the Caspary Collection. Now that the Caspary Sa le has realized its first million dollars, it is opportune and interesting to glance at a prophesy made by H. R. Ha rmer himself abo ut 18 months ago, on one of those occasions when the national press devoted appreciable space to informing its readers a bout matters philatelic. The article is reproduced, by permission , from the London Daily Mail of May 2 1, 1955; and , in the opinio n of Mr . Bernard Harmer in New York , the prophesied £1,000,000 (sterling) will be reached and surp assed. " In some months from now, perhaps the most valuable stamp collection of all time will be auctioned in America. The total realised may well be more than £1,000,000, and I have the name of at least one colJector who will be prepared to spend £ 100,000 at that sale. The co llector with £ 100,000 to invest is no freak . Sums like that are availab le when unique, beautif ul, irreplaceable stamps come on the market.
Cash Call l remember how, in 1933, I was asked to look aro und for £100,000 for a syndicate that wanted to buy part only of the collection of the late Arthur Hind , a Yorkshireman who died in America worth some millions made out of motor-car plush upholst ery. With one of London 's most distinguished acco unt ants, I went to a banker 's in the City a nd said: "Le nd me £ 100,000 to buy some stamps". They gave us much cour tesy, an excellent sherry , but no loan. With others, I went to friends a nd told the sto ry that I tell now- that there can be enormous value in stamps. The story was believed, and the syndicate eventua lly bought the non-American portion of the collection for £87,000. I drove with the collection to New York Harbour in an armoured truck , two hefty , genial policemen guarding me with carbines. Then, beca use of some technicality , some red tape, they left me alo ne, sitting on album s worth a fortune. The albums were taken on board ship and reached England safely. The £87,000 collection sold here for £ 135,000. These are big, perhaps frightening , figures for the keen, small collector with just a little money to invest. I understand his viewpoi nt, because I started as a small co llecto r myself. But there is no reason why he shou ld not invest modestly within his means , a nd know that he has acted wisely.
Value stays I reason this way: Toda y yo u have a pound note .. . tomorrow, because of some currency fluctuation , some international crisis, your pound is worth only 17s. Today yo u have a diamond worth £1,000 . .. tomorro w, because of some breakdown in world prices, perhaps the entry into the market of a pirate company, or the discovery of some process that can produc e laboratory diamonds indistinguish able from the natural stone, your diamond may be worth o nly £50. That never happens with rare stamps. I say that with due regard to the fact that there have been excellent reproductions made of rare stamps by peop le like Jea n de Sperati .... But these imitations ca n easily be detected by the expert. There a re many hundreds of stamps today of which only one to four copies exist. Their value ranges from a few hundred pounds to more than £10,000 apiece. Their value is steadily increasing. What their eventual worth will be no one ca n tell. The y are the most valuable portable property in the world - an important factor in times of war and international upset. An oil painting can sell for as much as £200,000, but it is not the sort of thing you can transport across a hostile frontier in your waistcoat pocket."

way yo u have carried out this transaction, and on the gratifying results." J . E. T., St . Albans

total of $1,702,834 is of course a been equalled by any auction con-
Ra ther more than half of this total came from the wonderful results of the first four Caspary auctions that were held during the period in review. The great success of these auctions, the wonderful catalogues, accurate descriptions and first-class handling of the sales th e mselves have been written on at length in the philatelic press, and do not require repetition. We feel equal pride however in having maintained our usual auctions, with no reduction of care or service, to a point where their total nearly equalled our record figure for the 1954-55 Season. We hope we may continue
to serve our countless philatelic clients and friends in the future as we have in the past; equally we trust this present Resume will prove of interest in reflecting what we have done and can do for anyone wishing to buy or sell in the finest philatelic market -- H. R. Harmer, Inc.
