The Best of both Worlds
A
little over 20 years ago the magic total of one million dollars was exceeded by the Organi zation 's two offices for the first time - less than ten years ago we were able to announce a turnover of one million pounds by the three offices (the Sydney office having been opened in 1948) . Even this milestone , reached with so much effort and endeavour , has faded into the distance as ever greater totals were reached . This year yet anothe r record has been set .
TWO AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS - SIX MILLION DOLLARS! We believe that this steady, and sometimes rapid , g rowth is the result of the harmonious blending of modern efficiency with old -fashioned integrity . There are no "gimmicks ", no hidden extras , nothing that is not clearly explained in our literature . Thus our clients, whether buying or selling , enjoy the best of both worlds , and their continued and increasing patronage of our three Houses shows that this is appreciated . Here is a family business with all the traditions of continuing service this entails . In 1918 , H. R. Harmer held his first auction . By 1931 he had two sons with him in the business , and today two grandsons work with them in a pattern which we hope will continue for many years to come . Nor must one forget the staffs who are also part of this tradition , and amongst whom there are more members of the " 20 year" and "30 year" club than are ready to admit it! We look forward to the 1970 's with the same optimism and determ ination as in the past, knowing that we can provide philatelists , both amateur and professional , with the standard of service they have come to expect from Harmers , in short - the best.

INTERNATIONAL FOR THE 196
NEW YORK An exceptional
year
A record $4,200,118 ! If one looks back through the previous years , it becomes diffi cult to imagine that an for just one auction turnover of the three Harmer houses could exceed four million dollars . As in the past, such figures must necessarily result to some degree from the selling of a col lectio n of particular importance. In the 1956 to 1958 period the H. R. Harmer auction graph leapt when the Caspary Collection was sold over that period . Equally the past season necessarily reflects the impact of the first five (of the ten) Louise Boyd Dale and Alfred F. Lichtenstein auctions. Activity was 25 catalogues , comprising 59 sessions and 25 ,580 lots , representing an average of $164 per lot . There were 506 satisfied vendors from all parts of th e World .
Important Sales United States issues were very strongly represented . Six auctions, co mprising 12 sessions were devoted exclusively to it while a further six auctions ea·.:h had one session. Th e most important of the sales was that of May 27 , 28 when some 800 lots were sold for $357 ,053 . This auction also created a new record for a United States or Air Post stamp of $31 ,000 . British Commonwealth was also very evident , by reason of the five Dale/ Lichtenstein auctions . Seven other auctions were exc lusively British , while a furth er ten included sessions of British . Oth er specialized auctions included Latin America (March 4) and Japan (May 6, 7 ). Named Collections Philatelists whose co ll ections were offered on th eir behalf included : The Honourable Hamilton Fish, Ernesto Muscani , L. deGrove Potter , Edward A. Ring , Ralph A. Schoenfeld and Mr . & Mrs . Harold H. Smith . Collections offered on behalf of Estates, Exec utors , Legatees, Beneficiaries , Clubs and Foundations inclu ded : Dr. Benjamin P. Burp ee, Collectors Club, New York , John E. Cuthber t, Loui se Boyd Dale, George B. Davidson , George H. Deubl e, Duncan S. Ellsworth , Edward K. Foster, E. Carey Fox, Dr. Jos eph N. THE PRIVATE TREATY DEPARTMENTS LONDON With a total of £67 ,333 , Private Treaty sales were slightly down on last year 's figure , possibly because the effects of the Capital Gains Tax (on properties realising over £1 ,000 ) are being felt slightly more as each year passes . By far the largest property w as a supe rb Collection of New Zealand Cha Ion Heads which was sold for £9 ,875 on behalf of a New Zealand Trust . Among the mo re unusual properties were an extre mely fine Collectio n of Long Island typewritten for £1,450 and a grou p of Su ez Canal issu es ( £550) .

NEW YORK In a season which was such a phenomenal success , the one depart ment that did not maintain its gen eral strength was Priv ate Tr eaty. The total was $64,930 . In part , the extended activity applied to the auction side , automatically diminished the efforts applied t o " P.T.". Mo re noticeable how ever was the inclination of vendors to prefer their material being put " o n the block " in the expectation of ten realised - that t he strong auction market woul d result in levels which cou ld not be obtained priva tely . This is borne o ut by th e man y general and spec ialised co llections sold en bloc at auction duri ng the past Season. Th e success for those properties that were offered privately ran approximately the same as the previous season with some 75 % sold . Included in the sales was the highly special ised collection of Bulgari a, brought together by the late Dr. Herbert P. Woodward , dean emeritus of the Rutgers College of Arts and Sciences in Newark , New Jersey and former President of the Coll ectors Club , New York , etc . Following t he disposal of the co ll ection at $13 ,000, M rs. Harrie tt e B. Woodward , the Executrix , wrote " I am very pleased with the manner in which your organization handled this matter and am ve ry grateful to you for your efforts on my be half ". Two further properties were placed at figures at or i n excess of $10 ,000 ; firstly a group of the Anguilla " Independent" overpri nts which have created so mu ch attention since th eir issue both in the U nited St ates and Eng land , and secondly a select ion of Japanese Occupation overpr ints . Oth er properties sold to the ev ide nt satisfact io ns of bot h buyer and sel ler, in c lu d i ng two extensive general properties , an accumulation of mainly Latin Ameri ca and a small specia lis ed col lection of Australia . In the expe ctation of returning this department to a mor e activ e level , w e look forw ard to enquiries from pot en t ial vendors who pref er this generally fast er method of sale . Su c h enqu iries are of course tr eat ed in the stri ctest confi d ence .
.., wo ul d exp ress my best tha nks for th e qu ick and most satisfactor y result obtaine d by you .··

NOTES AND A syndicated article Over the years Harmers in New York and in London have been fortunate in receiving some exceptional publicity from newspapers , magazines, radio , television and (for those with memories) the news - reels. The response to such stories varied from a disappointing disregard to an awesome avalanche of mail and calls . Recently the celebrated American columnist Miss Sylvia Porter wrote a story (extensively syndicated on two consecutive days) on the question of stamps , their investment potential , etc. based on discussions with Bernard Harmer , President of our New York office . The attention this article drew was quite amazing , confirming the extraordinary depth of the syndication and we hope , to some degree , the interest of the subject .
Inflation The question of inflation on philatelic prices is on most collectors' lips , and as auctioneers on both sides of the Atlantic we have had many examples of considerable marking up of items when resold by us at later dates . In New York we recall the " Dr. Geldert" Canada 12 pence cover selling for $15 ,500 in March of 1968 , which cost him $5,250 in 1956 when part of the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Collection of Canada was sold through us. More recently a United States 24c inverted centre was sold by us for a record $31 ,000 wh ich had sold through us less than 5 years previously for exactly half . Naturally such mark-ups are news , and we would be less than int elligent not to publicise such examples where the absolute authenticity of both selling price was without question. To put philatelic inflation in its more proper light however , the Harmer Organ ization would like to stress that the overall philatelic picture is far steadier. The best material - the classics in top condition - has shown marked increases and possibly 30 % over 1968 is a fair average . The more normal material however has shown only limited movement while those countries that received the " pressure treatment " have , as has been evident for some time , eased considerably . Wedding bells Keith Anthony Harmer , son of Bernard Harmer, President of the New York House , was married to Barbara Janet Regan of Chatham , N.J . at St . Paul's Episcopal Church on Saturday , June 7th . Keith is presently on active duty in the United States Naval Reserve, stationed at Newport , Rhode Island . Finds Every year our experts discover rare items which had remained hidden in collections completely unknown to their owners . This year has been no exception , and two of the more interesting finds to come to light were offered at auction on February 18th and March 17th 1969 in our London Galleries .
The first lot comprised two Indian Field Force covers used in Egypt in 1882 . These came from a " junk " lot which the lucky buyer purchased for about £7 and at a later date passed to us for auction . Our describer noticed that two of the covers bore Sea Post Office marks in addition to Indian stamps and realised that they must have been posted outside India . It was discovered that they were , as far as is known , the only two existing covers from the Egyptian Campaign bearing Indian stamps; the handful of other covers from the same source bear G.B. stamps . The two covers were offered as one lot and realised £320 which showed a reasonable profit for the lucky owner! The second item was the 1884 De La Rue book " Before and After the Stamp Committee " . This was sent to us by a gentleman in Cornwall , and on examining it our G.B. expert noticed that t he space usually reserved for the unissued 1 /- purple was occupied by the 1 / orange - brown . Careful examination with a magnifying glass showed that there was another stamp underneath the orange - brown copy and on removing the latter the 1 / - pu rple was uncovered . The book realised £700 , and as a slight bonus the 1 /- orange - brown which was offered separately realised £18. Both are good examples of experience and knowledge of the subject proving their worth and the commission was surely well earned .
Postal History The 1968-69 season saw a welcome increase in the number of lots being offered under this category . Separate sections devoted to Postal History appeared in a number of auctions and this proved to be a popular feature . Great Britain Postal History was much in evidence with specialised Devonshire realising £1,620 over sales in November and March , the latter auction also including a selection of the " Clayton Correspondence " sold for C. Eshborn Esq., F.R.P.S.L. July saw Cancellations well represented , particularly with the " Jefferson " Used Abroads which realised over £3 ,000 . September 16th sale featured Antarctica , Shac kleton Rowett Expedition marks realising £725; an 1845 letter written from H.M.S . Tortoise at Ascension - unnoticed by the owner and found among several hundred covers by our describer - brought £90 , whilst Fanning and Washington Island covers sold to good advantage . Cook Islands and Grenada were sold in November , with specialised Me xico and Holy Land following in December . Falkland Islands were featured on January 6th with a " Deutschland " card addressed to Sir Ernest Shackleton bringing £180. Indian P.O's Abroad were offered in February while March and April auctions included Airmail covers . The June 4th Africa sale featured the fine " Brice Smith " specialised collection of covers of the " Nigerias ", and on June 18th a "Hopflug" cover brought £775 .

COMMENTS The concluding July auction contained an unrecorded Waghorn cover (£80) , twenty-four Egyptian covers from 1866 to 1879 (£110) , and four 1855 - 56 covers with Thayetmyo ( Burma) marks ( £115) . "R.D.P." Cyril Harmer, the firm 's London Chairman , signed the Roll of Dist inguishe d Philatelists on June 27 , 1969 . This is the first occasion on wh ich a father and son appear on the Roll, " H.R.H." having signed in 1948, although a father and daughter occur with the names of Alfred Lichtenstein and Louise Dale. Ships on Stamps Many of our clients will have read of the discovery in our normal supply of stamps from the G.P.O. of the sheet of 9d . ship issue with red and blue omitted . These have now been sold , and we have donated £400 from the proceeds to the funds of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
New Directors In May Ian J . Glassborow and Frederick V. Tw ining were appointed Directors of H. R. Harmer Ltd . They have been with us for 16 and 22 years respectively . Fred Twining is the senior British Commonwealth describer and a member of the B.P.A. Expert Comm ittee. He is at present working on the plating of the G.R.I. overprints on New Guinea in his spare time! Ian Glassborow is in charge of the Private Treaty Department · and also "first reserve" auctioneer . He is Chairman of the Philatelic Traders Society and the Philymp ia Trade Advisory Comm ittee . Specialised Auctions This is the age of the Specialist and, with the increasing number of stamps issued each year, who can blame a collector for limiting his field to a single country or group. With this in mind , we are endeavouring to produce more specialised Auctions than previously . Groups which are particularly suitable for these include
Great Britain , British America , Europe and Scandinavia . We have, of course, always held specialised Sales - in fact our first ever Auction (in November 1918) comprised War Stamps only . Among the more exotic sales we have held are those featuring Inve rted Centres and Papermakers Watermarks . Visits to Societies
It is not generally realised that members of our staff are available for talks and displays to Philatelic Societies. Among the subjects covered by our London Office are Forgeries, Specimens , Newfoundland Airmails , 1911 Coronat ion Aerial Post, Auctions , Great Barrier Island Pigeon Post, Stamp Boxes and early Weighing Machines , Wreck Covers, Great Britain Postage Dues. We do not charge for this service and enquiries are invited from Philatelic Societies . Philympia
What promises to be one of the greatest International Philatelic Exhibitions ever to be held, is rapidly develop ing into a reality. Philympia London 1970 will take place from September 18th through to 26th at Olympia , London . Since the Prospectus was published in January 1969 it was found necessary to add an additional floor to the three original ly reserved. Examination of this prospectus shows that the H. R. Harmer Organizat ion is lending its full support to the Exhibition . In London , Mr . Cyril Harmer is Vice - Chair man of the Executive Committee and also a member of the Finance and Jury , Exhibits and Awards Sub Committees ; Mr . Ian Glassborow is Chairman of the Trade Advisory Sub - Committee and a member of the Reception and Accommodation Sub - Committee , and Miss Barbara Falgar serves on the Banqueting Sub committee . In New York , Mr. Bernard Harmer is one of the three American Commissioners . The Organization has also given financial support to this great fillip to philately , including two complete sets of Awards .
" Mildred " It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Mildred J . Fountain , who headed our Accounts Department in New York for more than twenty-five years. Mildred was taken ill during the summer of 1968 and, sadly, never recovered from major surgery . She died on December 30th , a few months before her 70th birthday , at which time she planned to retire for a well - earned rest. She will be missed by all the personnel at Harmers and we feel sure by the many clients who came to kno w her well.
" Thank you very much for your letter enclosing result of sale of stamps undertaken on behalf of the Royal Nation,/
Once again the prices were very satisfactory indeed . "
