"team" of Alfred F. Lichtenstein and Louise Boyd Dale The father/daughter formed some of the finest collections ever of Europe, Asia, British North America and the United States, including The Pony Express Postal History presented herein. Both were Fellows of the Royal Philatelic Society, London and elected to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1927 and 1956 respectivel y. As the founder of the Philatelic Foundation and its Expert Committee, Mr. Lichtenstein was a Chairman of both from 1945 to 1947, as was his daughter from 1953 to 1967. Since the Foundation's charter was granted in 1947, thousands have benefited from its services. The Foundation's Certificates of authenticity are recognized and respected internationally. Both were Trustees and members of the Collector's Club. Mr. Lichtenstein is also the namesake of the most prestigious award in Philately, the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award, of which his daughter was a recipient in 1962. Mr. Lichtenstein was an unassuming man and modest, with a great love for stamps, which became an enduring avocation. Mrs. Dale inherited many of her father's qualities and she, too , encouraged the study of stamps, as he had. Their contribution to Philately was outstanding and timeless. These two institutions alone attest to this and form a legacy that bears witness to their astounding vision and generosity.

Introduction to
The Dale/Lichtenstein
Pony Express Collection
Few events in the history of the "Wild West" and the American frontier have been as colorful as the Pony Express. Pictures of brave young men carrying the mail on swift horses and being chased by Indians are legion and legendary. The Pony Express was was a daring adventure. The Pony Express was started in April of 1860 by William H. Russell, Alexander Majors and William B. Waddell who ran The Central Overland California &Pikes Peak Express Compan y., an overland freight business. The first courier left April 3rd, 1860 making the trip from St. Joseph to San Francisco taking two days, nventy-one hours for the 1966 miles and carrying a total of 85 pieces . The Pony Express only lasted nineteen months in part due to the lack of business acumen and the misunderstanding of the economics of one hundred men and hundreds of horses and the supporting increasing influence of the telegraph. Monthly the companies lost money, although private enterprise financed the service through 1861.As Arthur Chapman wrote in "The Pony Express", this was "one of the financial failures which can be translated into terms of glory." This is the most extensive offering of the "Ponies" ever seen by the philatelic community.
Due to the extensive selection of covers in this magnificent collection, we have divided the offering into two basic groups, firstly, all West to East, secondly all East to West. All covers are then sorted chronologically witl1in these divisions.

Miraculously, the two reported covers bea ring the Four Dollar, the original and "duplicate " mailin gs, both exist. There are slight differences betwee n this cove r and the other, which res ided in the John Hall Collection fo r decades. The seal is green on the Dale/Lichtenstein cove r, red on the Hall, which also has the addressing blurred and/or faded. The eye appeal of the Dale/Lich tenstein cover is overwhe lming. Certificat ion: The Philat elic Foundation Certificate (2000) stating "ft is a genuin e usage." Documentation:
Th ere is a pencil notation o n reve rse "COST ALES I /5/53 " wh ich one must assum e was the date it wa s purcha ed from the Needham Co llection by Mr s. Loui se Boy d D ale, not her Father, Alfred F. Lichtenstein , the purchaser of the majority of the We stern Express covers . CONDITIONS OF SALE THE PLACING OF A BID SHALL CONSTITUTE ACCEPTANCE OF TH E CONDITIONS OF SALE 1.
2.
BIDDING Unless announced otherwise by the auctioneer , all bids are per lot , as numbered in the printed Catalogue . H .R. Harmer , LLC (hereinafter "Harmers "), License #s 672829 , 780870 , as agent for the consignor or vendor , shall regulate the bidding and shall determine the manner in w hich the bidding shall be co nducted . Harmers reserves the right to withdraw any lot prior to sale (without liability to any potential purchaser or agent) , to re-offer any withdrawn lot , to divide a lot or to group two or more lots belonging to the same consignor or vendor , and to refuse any bid belie ved not made in good faith . The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer shall prevail. Should a dispute arise between bidders (including a dispute between a floor bidder an d the auctioneer acting on behalf of a mail bidder , consignor or vendor) , the auctioneer alone shall determine who is the successful bidder and whe ther to reoffer the lot in dispute . Should a dispute arise after the sale , the auctioneer's sale records shall be conclusive. On all lots sold, a commission of 15% on the hammer price is payable by the buye r.
3.
(a) The auctioneer reserves the right to bid on behalf of clients (and consignors or vendors) but shall not be liable for errors and omissions in executing instructions to bid , however received , and whether such errors or omissions be those of the bidder or agent or those of the auctioneer . (b) All lots are offered subject to a reserve price. The auctioneer may implement such reserve price . The auctioneer may implement such reserve price by bidding on behalf of the consignor vendor . (c) It may also be assumed that all consignors have been advanced monies against the sale of their stamps and Harmers therefore has a security interest over and above the normal auction commission . (d) Purchases made by a consignor or vendor or his agent on his own lots shall be considered as a sale subject to commissions and sales tax as applicable . (e) Agents are responsible for all purchases made on behalf of their clients , unless other arrangements have been confirmed in writing prior to the auction.
4.
Payment for lots , including those on which opinions are desired (Condition of Sale 8) , shall be as follows : (a) Floor Bidders. Payment of the purchase price , or such part there of as Harmers shall require , shall be made by the purchaser in such manner as Harmers may determine . The name and address of the purchaser of each lot shall be given to the auctioneer immediately following the sale of such lot. (b) Mail Bidders . A successful mail bidder will be notified of lots purchased . Before Harmers will send such lots , payment in full must be received by Harmers within three (3) business days of receipt of the aforesaid notification by the mail bidder. However , a purchaser known to Harmers , or who furnishes satisfactory references , may at Harmers option , have purchases delivered or forwarded for immediate payment (by a dollar draft on a U.S. bank in the case of overseas purchasers ). Mailed delivery will be to the address on the bid sheet and proof by Harmers of receipt of a sending at the advised address shall constitute delivery . All charges for handling , delivery and insurance (obtained by Harmers on behalf of the purchase r) shall be added to the purchase price; a minimum charge of $ 1.00 will be made . Risk of loss in trans it shall be on the purchaser . (c) Where an opinion of a genera lly recognized authority' is desired , the time for payment may be extended in accord with and subject to Condition of Sale 8. Title shall not pass to the purchaser until full payment has been rece ived by Harmers as agents for the consignor or vendor .
PAYMENT FOR PURCHASES
5. 6.
(a) Purchasers agree to pay for lots as specified in Condition of Sale 4 (or as the same may be modified by Condition of Sale 8), and no credit is extended ; a late payment charge of 2% for the first month and 2 1/2% for each succeeding month compounded shall be added if payment is not made in accordance with the aforesaid conditions . (b) In the event that a bidder shall fail to comply with these Condit ions of Sale ("Non-Complying Bidder' '), then , as to any lot with respect to which such failure to comply occurs , Harmers may, in its sole discretion , re-offer such lot during the same auction or at an auction at a later time , or by pr ivate treaty at such time as Harmers , in its sole discretion , deems appropr iate and the Non-Complying Bidder shall be liable for the deficiency , if any, between the hammer price and the net proceeds of a sale to a subsequent purchaser , whether at auction or by pr ivate treaty , as well as for all costs and expenses of both sales , all other charges due thereunder , including commissions with respect to both sales , whether payable to Harmers or to a third party and all incidental damages . It shall be in Harmers ' sole discretion to determine whether to re-offer the lot theretofore hammereddown to a Non-Complying Bidder at the same auction , or by private treaty in due course , or at a subsequent auction conducted by Harmers . In no event shall any surplus arising from the sale of a re-offered lot be payable to a Non-Complying Bidder. (c) A defaulting purchaser shall be deemed to have granted Harmers a security interest in property in Harmers possess ion owned by such purchaser . Harmers shall have all of the rights afforded a secured party under the New York Uniform Commercial Code with respect to such property an may apply against such obligations all monies held or received by it for the account of , or due from Harmers to such purchaser . (d) If Harmers takes any legal steps to secure payment of a delinquent account , the defaulting purchaser shall be liable for all legal and other expenses incurred by Harmers to secure such payment , including but not limited to a reasonable allowance for attorneys ' fees.
