COLLECTIONS WATERWAY

AND VARIOUS PACKETMARKS

HANDSTAMPED AND PRINTED NAMES OF MAIL CARRYING STEAMBOATS ON THE UNITED STATES INLAND AND COASTAL WATERS, 1832-1899. The most comprehensive group of these issues ever offered. The vast majority coming from the correspondence of the famous Mess. Buchanan Carroll Hoy & Co. of New Orleans, La. A great quantity of these covers come from such important collections as J. M. Berthold , Carroll Chase, R. S. Emerson, Edward S. Knapp, etc. The condition is exceptional throughout with very clear and complete strikes of the handstamps. Where the strike is not readable in part it will be so mentioned. Many of the covers have pin holes from filing. This will not be described as in entires of this nature it is unnoticeable. Markings are for the most part handstamped and are to be considered such unless otherwise mentioned. "The United States Waterway Packet-Marks" by Eugene Klein has been used in the production of this catalogue and is signified by the letter K. Care has been used to quote the exact wording of the Packet markings so as to aid in their identification. The waterway on which the Packet was used is at the end of each lot unless quoted in handstamp. ACAPULCO 441 IIZ]

WHERE THERE 'S A WILL, THERE'S A WAY

Planni ng for the future, even the ultimate futu re, is a sign of an intelligent mind . Toda y, more than ever, life insuranc e is an essential part of man's existence - it is the proof of security for the future well - being of loved ones, in the event of your death. But have you guar ded agains t every eventual ity? Will your stamps be "given away" through lack of informatio n being available to your Executors? A let ter received reminded us of this possibility. T he writer states :

"This acknowledges receipt of your check for final settlement of my very small property, which you handled as well as a big one. I want you to know that your name is attached to my albums which my son will bring to you in time to come." This is a wise procedure but an even wiser one is to add a codicil to your will. A typical form of wording is:

"I direct my Executor(s ) to employ the sen •ices of H . R. H armer, Inc., now of New York City , to appraise* for tax purposes my postage stamp collection and at such time as my Executor (s) sell my postage stamp collection to avail themselves again of the services of H . R. Harmer, Inc . T his slight precaution will ensure that this portion of your Esta te will be han dled effectively and that the beneficiaries will receive the very maximum for it.

*Such appraisals are free if instructions to sell the collection are given to H . R. Harmer , Inc. within 12 months .

Lists of Prices Realized of lots sold at the H. R. Harmer Auctions The stamp catalogues published by leading houses in many countries supply a service without which philately could not exist. It is however impossible in such publications to show the relative values of stamps in varied condition. Equally, price trends cannot be covered effectively without extensive resetting of each issue. For this additional information the greatest source is the H. R. Harmer Lists of Prices Realized at their unreserved auctions. The results represent t'he actual market levels at which stamps have been bought and sold in open competition. Such information can be in valuable to the serious collector , both in preventing his overbidding on certa in items and equally in underbidding where the rarity is not reflected by the catalogue quotation .
