The Caspary

Hawaiian

Islands

By Ezra D . Cole

Hawaii is a group philatelic in terest!

of Islands

in the Pacific

Ocean

entirely

su rround ed with

The very first stamps issued, received in time the name of " Missionari es" by reason of their u se largely by church Mission aries, residing in the Islands , writing to friends and relative s in the United Stat es. While a Kingdom , Hawaii issued only some 50 stamps and of the se Alfred Caspary found real interest in only the first 29. But of the se 29 stamps what a wonderful collection he formed. A lover of rarities, Mr. Caspary naturall y was attracted to the Missionaries , obtaining a magnificent collection in extraordinarily fine condition for stamps which are invariably defecti ve or repaired by reason of the fragile pelure pap er on which they are printed . Of the extremely rare 2 cent, of which only 15 survived, he had one of these on cover - in fact the only copy on cover known to philately.

two, and

What can one write about such a Kohinoor of Philately . The technical details sho uld be left to the describer of the sales, Mr. Herbert Bloch. Its philatel ic hi stor y is a matter of record . Found in the early 20th Century , it was acquired by th e famous collector, G eorge Worthington , in whose ownership it remained until 1917 , when his collection was auctioned by J. C. Morgenrhau & Co. In that sale , Mr. Caspary purchased it for $6,100, then perhaps the highest pric e paid for any cover.

In 1954 when illustrat ed in the Life Magazine $35 ,000. This wonderful

ar ticle it had a valuation of item is one of the most celebrated covers known and m

the opinion of the writer one of the most desirable , although p erha p s preference might be given to the two famous Mauritius "P o st Offic e" covers. In any case , it can safely be said that it is certainl y the best United 1851 3c cover known, for it also bears a pair of these stamps!

Stat es

The King Kamehameha III issues are also very well represented and again one item stands out above all others. This is the extraordinary quintuple rate cover bearing five copies of the rare manuscript "5", Scott 's #7, with a single 12c and four 10c United States stamps. What an exceptional piece. Equally important is the fine collection of the very popular " Num erals" issues of 1859 to 1865 . Again, as with the " Missionaries ", these t ype-set primitives appealed to Mr. Caspary. I have always felt a close tie with Hawaiian stamps; my great-great-grand father, Titus Munson Coan , was a missionary in Hawaii, arriving in the Islands in 1835 and spending thirty-five years there with occasional visits to the United States. He retired and came back permanently to the United State s in 1870. The first major philatelic find I made was a cover written by him bearing Hawaiian stamps. In all , in the Caspary Collection, there are seven other covers addressed to my great-great-grandfather and several more addressed by him and other members of his family. The 2c Missionary, Lot # 1 was found by me i.n a ten cent notebook . This notebook actually came from Brooklyn but the stamp was first see n in a lawyer's office on William Street in New York City in 1935, and sold to Mr. Caspary. Many of whose owner's Hind, Green, original finds

the stamps in this auction come from World-famou s collections names read like a Roll of Honor - Worthington , Crocker, Ferrari, Tows, Harris, and others. Neverthele ss not a few items are from and so, for the first time, come on the public market.

Long after the final Caspary sale has taken place , philatelists will study these auction catalogues and will wonder how one man in hi s lifet ime could have amassed such stupendous collections. Many will ponder ov er which was his best; his Hawaiian Collection must, by any standard, be highly considered in such a comparison.

2c blue and Sc blue, both Type II, used with U.S. 1851 3c red, horiz. pair, on small, neat folded letter to New York . The two Missionaries tied by oval grid of bars, the U.S. pair by SAN FRANCISCO, Cal. Oct. 23 (or 28). Cover bears clear red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid, Oct. 4" and is probably mailed in 1852. The stamps are slightly touched and the Sc is torn in the bottom right corner. To improve the appearance of the cover a small portion of the frame line of the 2c at left top and of the Sc at bottom right has been drawn on the cover. The stamps themselves howe ver are not repaired. The only 2c Missionary known on cover and one of the most outstanding and extraordinary philatelic items in existence. Unpriced on cover, priced $18,000 off cover (1, 2; u. s. 11)

Issues of

The Caspary General the Confederate By Lawrence

States

L. Shenfield

Trust ee of the Philat elic F oundat ion

When the last item described in the following pages passes to a new admirer, will be no more. The final fall of the hammer will the Caspary" Confederates" signal , too, the end of an era of collecting - for never again probably will one from the world's to pick and choose "Confederates" man have the opportunity great collections of the past half century. A. H. Caspary loved the stamps of the Confederacy and he knew their history. I remember well the first time, some twenty years ago, when he spread before We were in Collection. eyes all the volumes of his Confederate my astonished the vaults of the bank that housed his stamps , and as we turned the pages of and Provisionals Postmasters' each volume we discussed stamp after stamp General Issues both. of costly stamps who bought Here , for four hours, was no rich accumulator or because he sought prizes investment, them because it was the fashion , or a good and medals Here was a collector of classics of the world, who believed that a postmaster , or a rude primitive wood-c ut whittled by some obscure Southern - was a classic because of its history drawn free-hand laboriously lithograph the greatest and the tragic time which gave it birth. And so he put together Collection the world has ever known. Confederate of the era during which he used his Of course he bore the characteristics - he coveted most the rarest stamps, he liked vast means to collect Confederates led him into monopolistic big unused pieces; and his aggressive acquisitiveness are presented with collectors present-day duplication . But thanks to these tendencies , Stat es . And they wide selec tion in the Caspary General Issues of the Confederate will see a level of condition and freshness that was set by one of the greatest eyes for condition that philately has ever known . In this high art Caspary applied

sense. If a cover or p iece was unique, he would overlook a slight fault, provided the item was pres entab le and attractive. But in the main, as you will note in this Caspar y group, he sought the fine things that "hit the eye" as Percy Do a ne used to say.

Common

Caspary had an appreciation, too, for olors and sha des ; and he applied thi s gift to hi s groups of the lithographed stamps of the Confederacy. Among the 5c greens there is a great array of shades, including the scarce early pale olives an d th e bright jad e ton es of Stone 2. The 5c blues are replete with the deep , clear blu es of Stone 3, scarcer by far than the milky blues from the same stone . The IOc Ho yer & Ludwig prints offer man y sharp ea rly impressions; and the 10c ro ses are examples of how clear and deep these rose shades can be . Among th e engra ve d sta mps are notable Frame Lines and "Tens", and pr etty multiples of th e 20c green. All through the co llec t ion there are beautiful unused blocks , notabl y of th e 5c blue-Stone 3-and of the " TEN " Cen ts. The cov ers which co mprise the bulk of the items are mai nl y clear and crispth ey ably refut e th e beli ef th a t Confederate cover s mu st b e messy, or that Confederate T ow n ca nc ellation s were always applied with a heav y sliding han d . Among th e rarities th ere will be long r emembered the diagonal half of the 2c green setenant with a pair to make th e unique 5c rate; the 2c red on Prisoner 's Co ve r; the amazing bl oc k of 6 of the !Oc rose; the " TEN " Cent tied with red grid ; the striking 20c green bi- sec ts. True, there are some " hole s" or at least om1ss1ons. Not many Prisoner's cove rr., nor "combination" covers, nor even a single Trans-Mississippi Express Mail cover. But M r. Caspary knew what he lacked and often spoke of that lackeve n taunting m e to let him have a beautiful pair of Twenties on a Trans-Miss. cover from m y coll ectio n. H e a dmitted that in the years during which he pursued the rarities of th e \'q o rld , he missed seei ng and obtaining some of the lesser things of a ll countries. But whatever his personal belief was, a pparently h e did not mis s much . The 29 4 lot 5 which no w comprise th e Caspary Collection of the General Issues of the Conf ed era te Stat es are a tribute to the discerning eye and philatelic good taste of a connoisseur . In th e years to come many a piece in this Caspary Sale catalog , when re-sold , will contain the line in its description "From the Caspar y Collect io n " - as a proud heritage for the future .
