H. This catalogue presents the 16th and last auction sale of the Alfred Caspary Collection. It comprises fine small collections of early Persia, Shanghai, Siam and a large , remarkable collection of the classic stamps of Japan; from the viewpoints of quantity, condition, completeness and rarity. I did not know Alfred H. Caspary but he had much in common with me and other collectors who enjoy and specialize in the early Japanese stamps. He, too, must have experienced the exciting expectation of new discoveries of the hand engraved issues and the keen delight of finding an engraving error, a missing plate position, a wove or a new paper variety; perhaps an unreadable cancellation, an unrecorded perforation or any one of a number of differences that facinate the searching collector of early Japan. There probably were no duplicates to Alfred Casp.iry. This constant hope of new discoveries no doubt lead him, as it does many of us today, to assemble as many as possible of each stamp. This catalogue gives the collector an unusual opportunity to bring to his collection items for study that are seldom seen or offered. His studious interest led to the assembly of this the largest and also the most important collection of early Japan offered for auction in the United States within the span of my memory. Beginning stamp (Scott
with the "Dragon l-54A) is found

As most of us know, these stamps were produced in sheets of forty stamps each. Eighty-one full sheets are in the collection , among which are twenty-two sheets Also offered is a rare sheet of the 20 Sen, lilac (Scott of the first eight stamps. ½ Sen , brown, plate III (Scott #9) which contains the of sheets five and #15) "Kihan Sen ", position #23, on which the upper the the notable variety , called character of the left label has two diagonal top strokes missing (Scott #9a). of pairs, strips and blocks of four or larger, of both There are hundreds early and successive printings in countless shades, types of paper and perferation varieties .
In single ¡stamps one finds the same wide choice of shades in laid, quadrille and wove papers . The complete and partial platings and the fine range forations should be of high interest to the specialist .

Mint copies of many of the rare syllabics of Scott laid paper are truly scarce. #29, 30 , 34 , 36, 37 , 41, 42, 43 , 45, 46 and 50 are of more than a passing interest. The collection of blocks between Scott #85 and # 154 and of the Japanese Offices in China and Korea are seldom found in collections. There is no doubt in my mind that the Alfred H . Caspary collection of Japan and that this catalogue will become a point of reference will long be remembered in the years ahead.
EPILOGUE "16" and FINIS. On a Monday over three years the late Alfred H. disposal, in a series auction .
that seems a life-time ago - but which turns out to be only just an agreement was signed whereby the Executor of the Estate of Caspary authorized H. R. Harmer , Inc. to proceed with the of sales, of the most fabulous collection ever to be offered at
Immediately the wheels began to turn. Advertisements and Press Releases were mailed to newspapers and journals throughout the world . An elaborate brochure illustrating the top gems of the collection was produced and distributed to philatelists everywhere. And in the course of a few months the name of Alfred H. Caspary - previous ly known only in a very limited circle as a great philatelist , became as recognized as those of Ferrari, Green, Hind, Lichtenstein and Worthington. The r eport s of a $2 ,000,000 expectation, circulated looked upon as , at the least , optimistic; in actual fact pe ssimistic . Auction schedules had been announced in the brochure, fir st of the sixteen Caspary catalogues was distributed.
by the auctioneers , was it was to prove unduly and in due course the
It was the small-in-number but fabulous-in-importance group of United States Po stmasters ' Provisionals - a matter of only 15 3 lots and yet at the conclusion of the auction on the afternoon of November 15th , 1955, $_225,340.50 had been realized to start the fantastic Caspary story. 100 people attended the auction but only 30 were successful purchasers. News-reels were taken and shown on television and movies; newspapers, home and overseas, reported on the several five-figure reali zations with awe and, possibly in some editors' minds, doubt. This was but the beginning, and as one extraordinary auction followed another , th e total steadily mounted. First the million mark was reached during Sale Five , the million-and-a-half during Sale Seven, the two-million during Sale Eleven , and the two-and-a-half million during Sale Thirteen. In the same Sale Thirteen the Caspary total passed the record for any fine art property ever sold at auction in the United States. It speaks well for philately that a collection restricted solely to the " humble " postage stamp , proved more valuable than a combined collection of books, manuscripts, art and furniture. In attain ing this record , practically every philatelic record went by the boards . And so , finall y, the story of the disposal of the Alfred H. Caspary Collection draw s to a close with the publication of this , the 16th and last auction catalogue . At th e time of publication the total for the 14 sales already held is $2,745 ,855. Sale 15 Oceania is still to be sold - on October 6, 7, 8, 9 - by H . R. Harmer , Ltd . in Londor.. and Sale 16 is this present catalogue. The name of Caspary will never die in philately; rather will it gain in stature through the years as his countless gems are exhibited , and attention is drawn to the fact that they are
