United
States
Two
1861 to 1888 issues
By Edgar
B. Jes sup
The stamps in the first auction of the Un ited States General Issues to 1857 -61 sold in January of this year were so exceptional that ever yone has been a wa it ing impatiei;,.tly to see the contents of the catalogue of the 1861 to 1888 issues. I am sure that, after checking the many great items in this group as shown in the catalogue that follows , no one will be disappointed . Once again there is clear evidence of the many years of search ing by Mr . Caspar y throughout the World for great pieces, some of which have undoubtedl y never previously been recorded. Although I had the pleasure of seeing these stamps with Mr . Caspary on man y occasions , they cannot help but still cause me surprise. Great pieces do nbt grow less great through repeated viewing , but rather increase in importance as they become familiar. In reading through the contents of this auction one once again notice s the fine taste and judgment that Mr . Caspa ry showed in his acquisition of philatelic rarities . This is no accumulation of " big mone y" items alone , although they are certainly plentiful. Found also are smaller item s of the finest quality purchased by reason of a striking postmark , a wonderful color , an attractive entire and so on. Gems such as the seldom seen true " pigeon blood " 3c of the 1861 issue on a beautiful entire , a gorgous it em. Also 1861 24c red v iolet with a prett y " PAID '' cancel. These are typical of the "not-so-rare " stamps that appealed so strongly to this great collector ' s ta ste and wound up in his collection. To pick certain rarities for mention in this brief foreword of slandering the man y others that deserve equal acclaim.
is difficult
for fear
The rare First Design 1861 12c certainly must be pointed out , for it has always been a famous and much des ired Scott nu m ber . The 24c dark violet in the vivid
"August" shade, of which two copies are to be found , is another A pair of the 30c, probably the only one , is exceptional.
intriguing
item.
The 1861 Second Designs are an extensive and interesting group, with the "pigeon blood" 3c already mentioned , a lovely o . g. 5c brown yellow, and a pair; singles and multiples of the 5c buff on entire , some beautiful 24c shades both mint, used and on cover, an amazing mint block of six of the 24c ''706" and an o. g. 24c in the true blackish violet shade . The 30c value of the same issue is noteworthy for a mint block of eight and some lovely covers. The 90c comes also in mint blocks of four and eight and on some wonderful covers. Believe it or not there is one cover with two copies of the 90c used with a 5c and l0c! The 1861-66 issue is well represented The 1867 grilled issue contains the catalogue itself speak for them.
with mint , used and on covers.
too many items that warrant
mention
-
let
What must be mentioned however is the amazing group of blocks of four of the 1875 re-issue , to be found in every value except the 90c. Other than the le and Zc these are unlisted and there can be little question that they are unique. The ever-popular 1869 issue contains some outstanding mint multiple showpieces that will cause considerable excitement, for their rarity is properly appreciated these days. The 15c, 24c with centers inverted and 30c with flags inverted are , as expected, to be found in the collection. The
1875 re-issue of this series is complete
And so the same story continues through grill issues and the 1873 Continental Bank Note
with many duplicates. the 1870-71 1ssue.
with
and
without
One finds the 1875 special printings of the 1873 issue again complete (including the 2c and 5c) , with many duplicates. The 1875 Continental Bank Note and 1879 American Bank Note issues show a strong representat ion of mint blocks. Also the 1880 special printing of this issue is found complete including the rare 2c and 5c. The 1882 Garfield special printing 5c comes somewhat surprisingly in a block of four, while there is a further block of the 1883 special printing of the 4c. Later in the catalogue one finds the only 20th Century stamp in the entire Caspary collection of classics , the 190 l Pan-American 1c with inverted center. Throughout interest.

And so, on November 19th, 20th and 2 1st , we will see the dispersal of these wonderful stamps to the pro verbial four corners of the globe to be placed into countless different collections with the certainty that the new owners will enjoy, as Mr. Caspary did previously, the pardonable pride of ownership that always goes with the possession of such fine postage stamps.

Co,ver bears red "NEW YORK, PAID, Dec. 27", magenta ms. "78" and other markings. Though part of address cut out and patched up inside, the cover is neat and attractive. The contents of the letter show that it contained 25 duplicates of a document, which accounts for the record $1.95 or 13 times single 15c rate. The correctness of the franking is confirmed by the magenta "78" of the New York Exchange Office , which is 13x6c or 78c credit to the Un ited States. Covers wi 1th two "Ninety oents" are excessively rare. Almost certainly unique as far as the rate is concerned ........................ (72, 68, 75)

24c purple. The 24c is listed by Scott as National printing as well as Continental saying that the latter is "difficult" to distinguish from the former . T,he fact of the matter is that it is practically impossible to separate the two; we therefore list them all here under ational. It has been sug g ested that 24c stamps sold in larger post offices from July 1873 on are Continental but there is no proof of this .
