The German States group sold on April 23, 24, 25, 1956 was a pleasant in the same field, and my examination warning of future philatelic expectations present sale proves that Mr . Caspary's is th in included items of the wonderful great. as certainly was love for the Italian States Although the collection is not a collection in the normal se nse that completeness was essential, neverthele ss Mr. Caspary had an equal desire for singl e gems , the many collectors whose inclinations multiple pieces and entires. Consequently range tend toward only one of these fields, as mine do , will find an outstanding Even the general of beautiful items that are "rig ht up their philatelic street". in hi s pursuit . collector wishing to fill spaces will have many opportunities as Part One of the Italian St a tes , does m fact This auction , designated contain the large majorit y of the finer stamps from thi s group to an even greater of the auction extent than in the case of the German St ates. The second session, on Tuesday , commences with the 1853 issue of Sardinia and includes some attractive items in this and the following issues. Then Tuscany, with some of the surprises of the collect ion . Blocks of 25 of the 1851-52 lg black on gray and the ls ochre on grayish blue start the ball rolling. Of the rare 2 soldi there is an unused pair , an o. g. strip of three (unique) and in the used section a vertical strip of five on cover . The even rarer 60 crazie is represented by two o. g . singles , a unique unused strip of three, two used singles and a used pair . And this a stamp that catalogues $2250 unused and $800 used. Throughout the other values there are some beautiful blocks of four, six and nine . In the Provisional Government issue of 1860 , the top item is a mint block of 18 of the 10c gray brown and a mint marginal block of twelve of the 20c in a greenish gray blue shade. The third session continues with the Provisional Government Issue of Tuscany at the 40c value . Of the famous " Three Lire " there are two unused and three used examples. The Two Sicilies - Naples and Sicily - are undoubtedly ordinary section of this far from ordinary collection .

The very attractive Provisional Go vernment issues of 1860 are exceptional. The Trinacria comes in an o. g. copy with " double T ", in a used marginal copy with the same variety , three normal used copies ( two on piece) , in a used pair and again in a pair on cover. The Savoy Cross, not to be outdone, is represented by two o. g. copies, an o . g. vertical pair - one of three known - , six used copies ( two on pieces and one with sheet margin) , a vertical pair , a horizontal strip of three and finally the unique block of eight . On covers , are a vertical pair and a strip of four . Sicily contain s many beautiful single stamps excellent u~ed multiples, including covers.

The sale concludes with a pair of the 50g gray used with a 5g vermilion undoubtedly - as the cataloguer remarks - one of the greatest cover rarities of the Italian States . With recovery in Europe permitting purchasing in the United European collectors, there are strong expectations that many important leave these shores.

It will h ave to look to its laurels however to retain the many wonderful philatelic gems that have come here in the past , and to prevent a return to the earlier days when philatelic wealth was concentrated in Europe.
