There is no doubt that the receipt of a catalogue of part collection provides the greatest thrill for a collector since the Ferrari collection in the twenties. Neither Ferrari nor and so both accumulations, unknown trea su re chests .

Th ere possibly th e similarity ceases. Ferrari had to have every thing appearing m the catalogue and his collections were in consequence rea sonably complete, though collectors could only di scover this by inspecting large and important remainder lots of co ll ec t ions. Ca spary boasted that except for small sections of United State s stamps he had no collections at all , but merely a show ing of the stamps which he lik ed . To a certain extent th is was an exaggeration as he had bought intact certain importan t collections of entire countries , and had added to them, and in thos e cases he had pretty complete representation. I do not remember Caspary tell ing me that he ever bought an y specialized West Indies collection intact or any collec ti on of Br it if.h Guiana , British Honduras or the Falkland Islands , and thi s sec tion therefore of his material represents mostly his own picking , although Mr. Robert Walser must have had some nice p ie ces m the group and th ese Caspary absorbed. In his early da ys as a collector Caspary intended to be more general in his approach than later he cho se to be , and he accumulated som e ordinary material, which belongs to th is period. He did not start buying on a large scale until

after the end of the 1914 - 18 war. Generally he waited for material to be offered to him, but he visited Paris for the early Ferrari sales, and most of his big items in for instance British Guiana were bought then, though the famous cover with the 4c and 8c circulars wa£ a Duveen piece. He never really liked the circulars and used to say that they looked too bad and generally were in too bad shape to ship types and wisely bought He liked the early lithographed warrant acquisition. the best he could

find .

as the The Bermuda Circulars which are just about as bad in appearance affection Guianas appealed to him more , but that was becau se he had a special for Postmasters ' stamps. As a group he liked most of the British West special urge to collect them on cover£ which is largely ignores ph ilatelic covers.

The late Major T . Charlton Henry who was a keen student, and who went through the West Indies section with Caspary was quite amazed to find such a which lithographs collection , and was possibly most impressed by the Trinidad somehow specially appealed to Caspary, even the late poor impressions . because Caspary always laughed at himself being described as a philatelist he did not study stamps as some people do and he b y no means liked all stamps. Apart from modern stamps in which he took no interef .t, he really didn't care about stamps which were not rare, or difficult to collect in the way he had them . He had a nose for knowing what was good , and he didn't mind checking his hunches with specialist friends who knew scarcity . What there is in any group may not be a complete collection, but it is always a very select portfolio of philatelic securities . His flair was remarkable not only for the noted rarities but for buying certain things in blocks of four and putting them aside when it is only the specialist who know£ that they do not generally come that way. The block of four Id on half 6d St. Vincent is probably unique , but I suspect there are quite a few other blocks in the collection of extreme rarity.
