S H A N N O N ’ S SN I P P ET WHY PURPOSE MATTERS. It is very “in vogue” to talk about “work - life” balance. But what is it, really? It is not possible to totally separate our “work life” from our “familyhome-not-at-work life” and trying to do so to a strict degree probably means we aren’t showing up authentically in either place. This is not to say that there is not (or should not be) some distance between how we act at work vs at home, or that we should not carve out time specifically for one to the exclusion of the other on a regular basis. It is important to understand the expectations surrounding our work – whether from clients, supervisors or peers, and we should avoid acting in ways that create workplace drama that bring everyone down. It is also imperative that we understand where we want to go with our personal lives – what are we striving for? To be, to do, to learn? Work as merely a “means to an end” misses the point. Why spend 1/3 of our days just drudging through our precious hours? Here’s a common-sense, but rarely spoken idea: work should enhance the lives of the people who do it. Recently, I listened to leaders putting this idea into action. One such person broke it down this way... The purpose of work in the 21st Century is no different than the general purpose we strive for in life. In short: •

To self-actualize

To come into your own authentic voice

To be heard as you are

To make the contribution that only you can make.

The idea is that, whether you drive for Uber or make multi-million dollar hedge fund investments, work should be a place where you are contributing, growing and not just marking time. A place where you are part of a team striving toward a unifying purpose that

ultimately allows you to be at your best. According to a recent Gallup poll only 15% of people are truly engaged at work. And engagement isn’t “someone else’s job”- it’s a two-way street. We must strive to connect, first with ourselves and our “WHY”, and then with those around us. Engagement often occurs around a unifying purpose, and when we feel that our voices matter. Purpose can make a positive difference in our everyday lives. And a purpose-driven organization is a great place to be. Do you recall our purpose? Our organizational “WHY”? If not, let me reiterate it: “Bettering lives, building dreams and positively impacting our communities”. Let’s come to our work each day knowing that our ONE FAMILY, ONE TEAM, ONE GOAL is to better the lives of those around us – as clients, co-workers, and family, and by doing so, help them build toward their dreams. In so acting, we cannot but help make a positive impact on our communities and ourselves. Part of how we collectively manifest our purpose is by contributing to the HOME Helps Fund and the Woods Bros Foundation for Giving. It is why we sign up for Meals on Wheels and why we launched our Giving Goods Program. It is why partnerships with non-profits, like the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, matter to us. There are so many ways to contribute to bettering lives, many of which are as small as living our GRATITUDE core value and telling someone how much we appreciate them. Culture makes the difference. Great people are everywhere. Be part of something bigger than just “work”. I invite you to join us in “Bettering lives, building dreams and positively impacting our communities”.
