It’s All About
The Game CYBER BULLYING. Fans, Athletes, and Heros.
In high school, I was always picked on, named called, and taunted. There was never a week that went by that some future storage locker room attendant would bark out a flagrant verb in my direction with his friends cheering him on. As a freshmen, (5’2” 115 lbs) I ended up in the trash can, lifted by these “socalled” athletes who were the studs on campus. Studs? I can still remember that our high school football team went 2-8 that year too. Back in 1978, it was okay to “bully” students. At least, that’s what I thought. I grew tired of this “bullying” and started to fight back. You know, fighting back felt good. I was not afraid anymore. But, those hecklers still managed to throw in a taunt every now them, after they discovered that I was not afraid anymore. Maybe, these guys were related to the comedian, George Lopez? Who knows. Today, times are different, everything that we do today has become a social network amongst teens and adults. Worst, some of
4
these teens are athletes too. Forget about all the booing that athletes hear from the stands on game day, It gets worst. They have to read about themselves after the game on the social network too. Funny, it’s all those friends that we have
book, Twitter, and Texting. This is where the “bullying” amongst students and parent becomes harsh and hurtful. You see, fans comes in all sorts. They are parents, coaches, teens, who all interact online on blogs. Cyber bullying is a form
accepted are the ones who bully these athletes too. This is where the real gangs exist. They are called Cyber Bullies. Forget about the hecklers I used to deal with, those numbers were few. But the real gangs exist on Face-
of teen violence that can do lasting harm to young people. Even by adults. Think about this. If one athlete reads a nasty message about himself on gameday, what affect do you think has been inflicted in this teen?
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MAGAZINE
April 2012
Fans forget that these teen athletes are playing for the love of the game. However, fans are becoming more carefree with the words they choose, thinking that it’s okay to speak freely. By being more aware of cyber bullying, teens and adults can help to fight it. Cyber bullying can take many forms: *Sending mean messages or threats to a person’s email or cell phone. *Spreading rumors online or through texts *Posting hurtful or threatening messages on social networking sites or web pages *Pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person *Taking unflattering pictures of a person and spreading them through cell phones or the Internet *Sexting, or circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages about a person What most teens and adults do not realize is that every time a “text” is sent it is recorded. Just ask Tiger. And every time a Cyber message is sent through Twitter or Facebook, it has been recorded. Worst, it could become a crime if you are over 18 years old. In athletics, being Bullied is no fun. Bullying does hurt. Athletes are icons of every school. Most importantly, Athletes are leaders. High school athletes are supposed be our heros too. Are you a hero in your school?

Sharyland Class 5A Region IV Golf Championships-Palmview Golf Course
Golf Wins (McAllen, Texas)-The Sharyland Rattlers golf team of District 30-5A won their first ever State 5A Region IV Golf Championship title in school history by defeating San Antonio Johnson in a playoff after finishing the two-day tournament tied at 608 played at the Palmview Golf Course in McAllen, Texas. The final day came down to one Sharyland player who was in the final group teeing off on the Par 5 No.18 Hole. Rattler Jose Pena led his team with a birdie on the Par 3 No.17 by clinching his fist as his putt rolled in to put the Rattlers up by one stroke, with a possible outright win. At No.18, Par 5, the finishing hole, with his teammates waiting for his finish, Pena’s drive ended up next to a tree trunk. He tried to punch out by using
his seven iron. The attempt misfired by hitting a another tree trunk fifty yards ahead of him, which slingshot to the left of the rough. Luckily, the ball ended up in an area not to overwhelming. His next shot was a lay up, about 100-yards away. Pena tried to save par from seven feet out, but the putt sailed wide to force a two-team playoff with Johnson to determined the outright Class 5A Region IV Champion. Before Pena, two other teammates had their chances to help the Rattlers win the title in the final two holes but No.17 got the best of Carlos Pena and Ybarra with bogeys too. In the playoff, the Rattlers came on strong winning by three-strokes to claim the team title. Tagle birdied Hole No.10 with a shot from 165 yards out to give the Rattlers a head start in the playoffs. Also advancing was first day leader, Juan Rodriguez, Sharyland’s qualifier, who finished third overall to advance to the State 5A Golf Championships to be played at the Onion Creek Golf Course in Austin, Texas on April 30th and May 1st. “This is incred-

We won the regional title. This is what golf is all about,” said head coach Fernando Rodriguez of Sharyland. The last time the Rattlers advanced to the state tournament was in 2006 where they finished eighth overall. Fort Worth Pascal won the state title in a playoff. The Rattlers will now take six players that will play in the tournament. Rattler team members advancing are Peter Fox, Carlos Pena, Chris Tagle, Jose Pena, and Jon Ybarra. “This is what I dreamed about all my life and after four years, we did it. We are going state,” said the 30-5A district champion, Carlos Pena. “Words cannot describe this moment. This is truly special.” In more golf action, Laredo Alexander sophomore, Luke Begwin birdied holes No.16, 17, and 18 to defeat San Antonio Johs-
non’s Jake Judkins by one stroke. Judkins had an opportunity to tie the match on the final hole, but his 15 foot putt sailed left and he could watch in amazement. “I almost had that putt. Things just did not go my way today,” added Judkins. Last month, in the Rio Grande Valley Golf Coaches Tournament of Champions played at Palmview, Judkins aced the No.14 Par 3. Finishing in fourth place overall was Brownsville Hanna’s senior, Ryan Hollander with a 147. He fired a three over par 75. Last year’s State 5A qualifier, McAllen Memorial’s Juan “Papito” Gonzalez missed out on making his second trip to state after a 150 finish. Gonzalez, coming off an all-star basketball game and was also named to HSSM’s first team All-South Texas Basketball struggled on his first day with a 76 and then finished out day two

with two bogeys on No.17 and No.18. Gonzalez made a last minute charge by carding an eagle on the long Par 5, No.15 Hole by chipping off the green to stand at even par. On No.16, Par 4 his drive was short and he missed the green from 175 yards. His attempt for par was good. At the infamous, No.17 Par 3 hole, Gonzalez pulled his shot left to the cart path. His next chip shot was short off the green. He would card a bogey. On the final hole, his drive went right and his second shot would sail left in a dipped rough. Standing in front of the Memorial junior was the fifty-foot Eucalyptus tree. He chose to hit the shot over, with
hopes of hitting the flag in the back. His attempt brushed the tropical Eucalyptus tree and dropped into the sand trap ending Gonzalez’s hopes of returning to the state championships in 2012. The junior finished with a two-over par, 74 for a two day total of 150, good for 10th place. “He will be back next year,”said McAllen Memorial head coach Celso Gonzalez. The Top 5 players were Luke Begwin of Laredo Alexander (73-71-144), Jake Judkins of SA Johnson (71-74-145), Juan Rodriguez of Sharyland (7076-146), Ryan Hollander of Hanna (72-75-147), and Peter Fox of Sharyland (75-73-148).

5A Region IV Girls Golf Championships
Edinburg’s Jessica Tamen Wins Second Straight Title in Playoff; Qualifies for State Tourney
Comeback! (Edinburg, Texas)- In the Class 5A Region IV Girls Golf Championships, call her the “come back kid” as Edinburg High School senior, Jessica Tamen birdied holes No. 4, 6, 10, and 17 to end her final two-day round with 2-under par 70 to force a playoff with San Antonio Reagan’s freshmen Marijosse Navarro (7272-144), after shooting a 74 on Wednesday at the Los Lagos Golf Course in Edinburg. In the playoff, Tamen drove her shot down the fairway with only 180 yards left to the pin on the Par 5. She chose to use her 4-iron and stuck her ball about 50-feet from the pin for a possible eagle. Navarro played it safe with a lay up from about 75 -yards to the green on her second shot. “I was real nervous playing Jessica. She was the regional champion coming in and to play her in a playoff was unreal,” added Navarro. The Reagan star freshmen nailed her third shot about 20feet from the pin and finished with a par. Tamen rolled her putt in for a birdie finish after missing her eagle. Tamen jumped up and celebrated as
her fans and teammates all came running to the green to congratulate the two-time champion. “This is too cool. To come from behind to win again was awesome,” said Ta-
men. She will now advance to the State 5A Golf Championships for the third straight year, to be played at the Onion Creek Golf Course in Austin, Texas on April 30-May 1st.

CHAMPIO
(Georgetown, Texas)-The 30-5A district runner-ups, the Sharyland Rattlers (31-3-3) are now the 2012 University Interscholastic League’s State 5A Boys Soccer Champions and they did it by defeating Katy Morton Ranch in a shootout 3-2 at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. The win brings another state soccer title to South Texas since the Hidalgo Pirates captured the Class 4A state title in 2009 and Brownsville Porter won the last 5A state championship in 2006. The Rattlers struck first on junior forward Daniel Garcia’s right-footer to the far post on a gorgeous through-ball from Jose Olivarez with 28:19 left in the first half to give Sharyland a 1-0 lead. Katy Morton’s Omar Acosta, coming off a hat trick in Thursday’s state semifinal, countered Garcia’s strike with a shot from 40+ yards to the high center of the goal with 21:51 left in the first half to tied the game at 1-1. Acosta scored his fifth goal of the state tournament on a header to the far left post with 4:38 left in the first half. It was his 24th, and final, score of the season to give 2-1 Morton Ranch a slim lead. With time running out, Olivarez complemented his earlier assist with his own strike, this time for a booming blast inside the right post with 4:52 left in the second half. 2-2. In the shootout, the Mavericks scored on their first two attempts and led 2-0 with two rounds left before the Rattlers pitched a shutout. After a Mavericks miss, Olivarez answered for Sharyland’s first score in the shootout. Morton Ranch’s fol-

State 5A Soccer Semifinals Highlights Sharyland 3 Mansfield 1
(Georgetown, Tx)-Against Mansfield, the Sharyland Rattlers showed why they were the best team from Region IV. It was the first trip for teams to the boys state soccer tournament and in the end, Sharyland shut down the Tigers 3-1 to advance to the state championship game.Sharyland’s defense utilized exceptional midfield ball control and clogged the passing lanes to effectively disrupt Mansfield’s offense. Sharyland’s Jesus Olivares scored two goals, and Daniel Garcia had a goal and an assist as the Rattlers improved to 16-3.

But Garcia’s second score minutes later sealed the outcome. San Antonio Churchill defeats Sharyland Lady Rattlers in Class 5A Girls Region IV Finals at Brownsville Sports Park.
(Brownsville, Texas)-Soccer in South Texas was brilliant! Most importantly, in the State 5A girls playoffs, the Rio Grande Valley was represented by Harlingen and Sharyand in the Region IV-5A tournament hosted by the Brownsville Sports Park. The Lady Cardinals faced off with SA Churchill and lost 7-0, while SA MacArthur, last year’s regional finalist was upset by Sharyland in a 3-2 comefrom-behind win. Finals. The win vaulted the 26-5A Lady Chargers to the University Interscholastic League’s State 5A Girls Soccer Championships this Thursday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, Texas. Game is set for 1:00 p.m. against Katy Seven Lakes (22-3-3). It was the trip the Lady Rattlers had hoped for in 2012. The District 26-5A fourth-place Lady Chargers (19-6-1) are returning to state for the first time since 2003. District 30-5A champion Sharyland ends its season at 27-4. The Lady Chargers now have outscored five opponents 16-0 in the postseason. Churchill’s Lauren Peck, a senior forward found an open goal to scored the game’s only goal with just under 13 minutes remaining. Chargers head coach Jennifer Aguilar was overwhelmed with the win. “This is my first state tournament appearance as a head coach. I’ve been a head coach at Churchill for two years and this awesome,” added Aguilar. “This wind is incredible and we had to make-do with the conditions.” The Lady Chargers have made state appearances in 1987, ’97,’98, ’99, ’00, ’03, and ’12. Against Harlingen, the San Antonio Lady Chargers charged past the Lady Cardinals 7-0 on Friday at the Region IV-5A Girls Soccer semifinals at Brownsville Sports Park. The District 26-5A fourth-place Lady Chargers (18-6-1) quickly scored three goals in the first half and are set to play 30-5A District Champions, Sharyland today at 1 p.m. in the regional championship game. The winner will earn the right to play next Thursday at the UIL State 5A Soccer Championships in Georgetown. The District 315A champion Lady Cardinals (22-4-1),did all that they could do but the Lady Chargers were too fast and stronger. Lady Cardinals coach Philip Oxford said, “I’m proud of our team. At this level, every team is just as good.”The Lady Chargers seemed to have
a preference for the left corner of the goal, as that’s where all three of their first-half tallies settled into the net. Colette Callan, a senior midfielder, scored Churchill’s first two goals during the 17th and 24th minutes and then Lauren Peck added another head goal to make it 3-0 with 29 minutes still to play in the first half. Brooke Shoffstall of Churchill ended the game with a goal of

(Edinburg, Texas)-With the Class 5A Region IV Track and Field Championships set for this weekend at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, Harlingen sprinter, Randy Bermea is set to lead his team in the 400 meter relay race after winning the 31-5A Track and Field Championships held at Cats Stadium in Edinburg. On the least leg, Bermea re-injured his heel but that did not seem to stop the University of California (Cal)-bound senior to winning two more gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. He also won first place medals in the long and triple jumps. In all, Bermea nabbed five gold medals. “My heel was re-injured after I messed it up in practice jumping,” Bermea said. Junior standout, Edinburg Economedes’ junior Leigha Brown of Edinburg Economedes won four gold medals and also set a new Valley record in the 100 meters hurdles with a 13.97 second mark and also earned a trip back to the State 5A Region IV Track and Field meet in five events. This race was perfect and I came over the hurdles real smooth,” said the Brown. The Lady Jaguars junior also set two more records in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.26 to win gold and added another gold medal in the triple jump with a jump of 37-3 ½. She also came in second in the high jump and anchored the Economedes mile relay to a win. Other track and field participants to watch will be high jumpers Roberto Valdez of McAllen High School and 32-5A champion, Los Fresnos’s Aikeem Simiem. RGVCA Meet of Champions Honors Past Track Standouts (Weslaco, Texas)-The Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association hosted the 37th Annual Track and Field Meet of Champions at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco and honored San Benito head coach Danny De La Rosa and Rio Grande City athletic director Rey Ramirez for their accomplishments in high school track and field. Both captured state championship titles and both went on to star at NCAA Division I track and field meets in their careers. “This is quite an honored and time has past by so quickly,” said Rio Grande City CISD Athletic Director Rey Ramirez. “I am honored,” added Ramirez. Lady Greyhounds head coach De La Rosa, was surprised by his recognition. “I did not expect this so early in my coaching career. This is surprising and I feel grateful to all the coaches that helped me in my career,” added De La Rosa. De La Rosa graduated from San Benito H.S. in 1997 and won a state title in the 800-meter run in Austin at the Mike Myers Stadium with a time of 1:51.87. It was his second straight trip to the state meet. De La Rosa went on to run track at the University of Arkansas. In 1986, Ramirez set a Valley record in the 100-meter dash running a 10.34 and in the long jump with a 24-2¼. Ramirez received a scholarship from the University of Texas and competed in the 100, 200, 400, sprint and mile relays for the Longhorns. Ramirez received NCAA All-American and All-Southwest honors. After graduating from UT, Ramirez returned home to coach track and field in 1991. “This is very special and I am proud to serve the city of Rio Grande City and athletics,” added Ramirez. In more news, RGVCA president, Bill Littleton from McAllen Memorial High School, presented awards to various members of the RGVCA and he also welcomed Michael Uribe, athletic director and head football coach of Mercedes High School as the new incoming president. Littleton led his football team to back-to-back Class 5A Division II Regional Championships. The Mustangs lost to State 5A Champions, Cibolo Steele in 2010 and hosted the regional game at McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium in 2011 against SA Reagan, losing 35-28. April 2012

Harlingen South’s Blake White Aiming High
White qualified for State 5A Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas in 2011. He wants to go back. (Harlingen, Texas)-He has does this a thousand times, if not more. And the Harlingen South pole vaulter just keeps getting better every time too. But, Blake White knows that 15’6” will probably not win him a state title in 2012 UIL Track and Field Meet to be held at the Mike A. Myers in Austin, Texas should he qualify this weekend at the Class 5A Region IV Track and Field Championships in San Antonio,Texas. Spring High School Reese Watson, is the defending State 5A Pole Vaulting Champion and is currently ranked No.1 in the United States with a clearance of 17’-7” on Feb. 4. Last year, Watson won the state title with a vault of 16’9” while White finished last with a mark of 14’0”. “It’s all about getting into the zone,”says White. “Staying focus during the run and then getting your feet up is the key.” The White easily won first place on April 10th at the 31-5A District Track and Field Meet in Edinburg with a jump of 15 feet and 3 inches. His best jump this year was on March 23 when he jumped 15 feet and 6 inches at the 37th annual Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association Meet of Champions at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco. “I feel like it was good, it was an accomplishment,” said White, the son of Brad White and Denene Fultz. “But I guess the only meets that really count in my opinion are regionals and state. So that’s what I’m working for, leading up to. The other meets in between are just practice.” South head boys track coach Ralph De La Rosa, will be headed to the Region IV-5A Track and Field Meet this week at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio, and hopefully, De La Rosa will join White again at the UIL State Track and Field Championship at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin next month. White, a senior, plans to attend the University of Texas-Arlington on an athletic scholarship. Throughout his career, White won the district championships in the seventh and eighth grade year, but he broke his foot in his freshman year so he couldn’t practice his sport. He made a great comeback the following year when he jumped 14 feet, then in his junior year he jumped 15 feet. White is favored to win the regional championships this weekend. Looking For Better Heights! Blake White won the 31-5A title in 2012 and he qualified for the State 5A Region IV Track and Field Championships to be held this week in San Antonio, Texas.
