UIL Finally Gives

RGV Site

For the past years, the University Interscholastic League in Austin has held the Region IV-5A Basketball Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Now, March Madness is coming to South Texas! On February 22nd, the Class 5A Region IV-5A Girls basketball tournament will be held at the University of Texas Pan American Field House in Edinburg. The semifinals will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the second game to be played at 8:00 p.m. The championship game will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at 1:00 p.m., with one winner advancing to the state tournament at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas on Feruary 28th

through March 2nd. The same thing will happen for the Class 5A Region IV-5A Boys Tournament. All semifinal games will be played on March 1st in Edinburg with the finals on March 2nd at 1:00 p.m. The winner also advances to the state championship tournament at the Frank Erwin Center on March 7th-9th. It’s about time the UIL is listening to the fairness of spreading these regional sites throughout the state of Texas. It’s been a long time coming too. Just ask any coach from the Rio Grande Valley. They will all agree. Joe Filoteo, Edinburg CISD athletic director is the new regional director and enjoys the fanfare of March Madness too. He led the Edinburg Bobcats to three State 5A-Region IV Tournaments in his career and all games were played at the University of Texas-San Antonio. What kind of impact will the teams from the Rio Grande Valley make in this regional tournament? That depends if any team from South Texas will qualify. You have to qualify first. On the girls side, teams to watch from Region IV, which includes teams from the San AntonioLaredo areas, will be the State 5A ranked No.25 Weslaco (21-1); No. 8 San Antonio Wagner (143); No. 10 SA Reagan (18-1); No. 14 Cibolo Steele (14-2); No. 17 SA Churchill (18-3); No. 22 SA Johnson (15-4); and No. 23 CC Carroll (14-3). Other teams from South Texas to watch will be Harlingen, Los Fresnos, and Edinburg Vela H.S. On the boys side, Brownsville Porter, Nikki Rowe, Harlingen, Harlingen South, and stateranked teams SA Brandeis, SA Reagan, Converse Judson, and SA Churchill. Best of luck to all teams!

Class 5A State-Ranked No.25 Weslaco Lady Panthers! Head coach Griselda Fino led her team to the area playoffs in 2012 and returns all starters from last season. The Lady Panthers have won two tournaments this season and lost to state-ranked SA Churchill in the McAllen Border Bash Championships. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

To date, the Cowboys are 19-3 overall and sit in third place behind Harlingen and Harlingen South in District 32-5A. Head coach Luis Garza was elated after knocking off Sharyland (18-7) in their own Diamondback Basketball Classic last month. “This was a great win for our program and we can only hope to get better throughout the season,” said Garza. Last year, the Cowboys lost to Edinburg in the Class 5A Bi-District playoffs 68-60. But that was last year and Garza adds that this team has what it takes to win the dis-

Harlingen South 62-57 and rebounded with it’s first district win over Hanna 60-46. “It’s going to be close and exciting in District 32-5A,” says Garza.

Harlingen Cardinals Much Improved

(La Feria, Tx)- At the C.E. Vail Basketball finals in La Feria, Harlingen lost to the 2012 State 3A finalist, Corpus Christi Miller Buccaneers 82-75. Head coach Greg Yates likes challenges and he would love to get back to the State 5A Region IV Tournament to be played at the UTPA Field House on March 1-2, 2013. In 2010, the Cardinals went four rounds in the Class 5A playoffs by defeating Brownsville Rivera (67-57), McAllen Rowe (52-51), Weslaco (64-58), before falling to San Antonio MacArthur 77-61 in the regional semifinals played at the UTSA Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. MacArthur lost to SA Taft in the regional finals. Yates knows that two teams from San Antonio will end up in the UTPA Field House in March and he hopes that two teams from the Rio Grande Valley will be there too. And he hopes that it will be his Cardinals. “Playing for the first time in the Rio Grande Valley, I would love to see our team in the regional tournament,” adds Yates. Players to watch in 201213 are seniors Anthony Scallan, Peter Hernandez, Gilbert Reza, Eric Brandenburg, Briggs Stillman, and Mark Benitez. Brandenburg leads the team with assists of 6.0 per game and he likes to pass the ball to the Valley’s leading scorer, Reza (24.5ppg) and junior point guard, Mark Benitez, Harlingen Cardinals Anthony Scallan Peter Hernandez Gilbert Reza Ernesto Ramirez Eric Brandenburg Mark Rosales Daniel Quebe Stephen Gasca Briggs Stillman Ali Jara CJ Gallegos Juan Cerrillo Matthew Cervantes Mark Benitez

2012-13 RIO GRANDE VALLEY BASKETBALL

(Harlingen, Tx)-Now in his sixth season at Harlingen South High School, head coach Brian Molina finally won his first outright District 31-5A title in 2011. Not only that, he also led his team to the Class 5A Region IV quarterfinals, before losing to Laredo United 71-59. In 2012-13, the Hawks were realigned to compete in District 325A and according to Molina, he says that this district is filled with talent. “It won’t be easy winning another district title with teams like Harlingen, Porter, Hanna, and Los Fresnos in the same district. It will be tough,” says Molina. To date, the Hawks have defeated Sharyland, Hanna, and then lost to Porter at the Diamondback Classic. But with the season still young, the Hawks know that injuries will be the key to their success in 2013, if they expect to contend for a playoff run and represent the Rio Grande Valley in the Class 5A Region IV Tournament to be played in Edinburg this March. In the state playoffs last year,

the Hawks defeated Weslaco in the first round 54-26 and then knocked off Laredo Nixon in the

Brownsville Veterans Charging; Could Contend

(Brownsville, Tx)-Head coach Larry Gibson thinks about calling it quits and says that, “it’s been a long time coming” and would like to to know how it would feel being retired, finally, after 30 years of coaching. But for now, he’s just enjoying courtside coaching. Gibson will be leading the charge at Brownsville Veterans Memorial after moving up from District 32-4A. He led the Chargers to a 2012 Class 4A Bi-District title win over Corpus Christi Ray (53-51) and ended the season with an area finalist appearance loss to San Antonio Burbank (6441). With the new realignments taking place this past February, the Chargers moved into the District 32-5A level. Twelve seniors will lead this team, including junior Eduardo Hernandez (6’4, 17.0 ppg). “He is our leader and go-to-guy on the court. He has a great attitude and I love coaching him,” says Gibson. Other seniors to watch are Roger Mata, Adrian Alejandro, Mar-

co Munoz, Andy Alvarado, and Jorge Lerma. With ten wins this season and District 32-5A already on the go, the Chargers are 2-2 in district play with wins over Browns-

ville Rivera and Lopez H.S. The Chargers will end their season at Brownsville Pace, where Gibson started his career in Brownsville. “I love basketball,” he laughs. “These players are great kids.”

Los Fresnos Ready to Make Playoffs... (Los Fresnos, Tx)-It’s been a long December month of playing basketball and Los Fresnos head coach Shawn Jones is just happy to see it all end. “This has been interesting and playing district games during tournament play had me thinking about possible injuries,” said Jones. At the Sharyland Diamondback Basketball Classic, Los Fresnos made a strong statement by defeating Sharyland 66-60 but at the McAllen City of Palms Basketball Classic, the Falcons lost to champions, No.1 ranked Nikki Rowe 60-47. “This will be a tough year and we just need to play basketball on gameday,” adds Jones. Currently, the Falcons are in fourth place in District 32-5A and return nine seniors from last year’s Class 5A Bi-District appearance. The Falcons lost to Harlingen 63-48.

2012-13 BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

Weslaco Panthers Struggling

2012-13 RIO GRANDE VALLEY BASKETBALL

(Weslaco, Tx)-Anytime you look at the district standings, you will always find the Weslaco Panthers atop titting in either first place or second. This year, just look down. All the way down. The Panthers are in last place at 0-3 in District 31-5A and head coach Gabe Valdez is still finding a way to get his Panthers back on track. For the year, the Panthers have won just eight games and lost 12. This is not the same team that Valdez is used to coaching when he advanced to the State 5A area playoffs in 2010 before losing to Laredo United 63-41 in area playoffs. They also went 31-7 that year too. The following season, Valdez led his team to the State 5A Regional quarterfinals, losing to Harlingen 64-58 in 2011. Last year, the Panthers lost to Harlingen South in the first round after struggling to make the playoffs. In 2009, the Panthers went two rounds deep. “We are not the same team. We are rebuilding with players and our depth is not there like in previous years,” says Valdez. In 2012-13, the Panthers find themselves moving into in District 315A from District 32-5A and playing teams like McAllen Nikki Rowe, PSJA North, has been challenging. Against the Raiders, the Panthers lost 34-32 and PSJA easily swept past the purple and white 59-52. The tallest player the Panthers list on their roster is 6’2 as compared to the 6’9” Mexican transfer Francisco Rodriguez, who played in Weslaco in 2006 and led them to the State 5A regional semifinals. Slow Start. Weslaco Panthers are 0-3 in District 31-5A and senior Tommy Chavez hopes to lead his team to the state playoffs in 2013. (HSSMImages/David Amador)

Nikki Rowe Top-Ranked Team In RGV (McAllen, Tx)-The McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors are in control of their own destiny in 2012-13. They are the team to beat in District 31-5A and are the top-ranked team in the Rio Grande Valley. “We have to practice everyday and not let up. As the season grows, we have to grow as coaches too. We have to coach,” says Jose Yerba, Rowe head coach. To date, the Warriors are 17-3 for the season and 3-0 in district play with wins over McAllen Memorial and Palmview. But the rigorus schedule the Warriors have played in 2012 has been challenging. They have played teams like Brownsville Porter, Harlingen South, CC King, Austin Vandergrift, and Los Fresnos posting all wins against teams favored to make the playoffs from their districts. The 25-4A Vandergrift Vipers advanced to the State 4A area playoffs in 2012 while the Hawks went three rounds deep in Class 5A before losing to Laredo United in the regional quarterfinals. Valley View, PSJA Memorial, North Bring Playoff Hopes Alive

(Pharr, Texas)-Basketball is back in this Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Valley View area. It’s been missing for awhile but with the realignments and new coaches, these areas have become contenders. In 32-4A, the Valley View Tigers have rebounded from a 3-67 record in the past three years and are now in first place with a 2-0 record. New head coach Arnold Martinez says that his team works hard and practice on their game plans. In 2012, the Tigers have posted wins over Harlingen South, Weslaco, Economedes, and Edinburg. All Class 5A teams. So what’s the secret? “Let’s just play some basketball,” says Martinez. The Tigers will play Rio Grande City on January 4th followed by Edcouch-Elsa on January 7th. Just east of Valley View are the PSJA Memorial Wolverines who are currently tied for second place in District 31-5A, while PSJA North is also tied with the Wolverines. North (14-6, 3-1) is coming off a big win over Weslaco (34-32) and head coach Jaime Gongora feels that his team will continue to be competitive as the season moves on. “We are young but improving,” adds Gongora. The tallest player listed on the Raiders roster is junior Ruben Muniz at 6’2”. The smallest player is team captain,

Last year, the Raiders finished 6th overall in District 31-5A but longtime head coach Gongora says that the years ahead will be favorable for the Raider program. “It’s all about building basketball programs and that’s what we have been doing at PSJA North,” adds Gongora. The last time the Raiders made it to the state playoffs was in 2009. Not since 2010, have the Wolverines made the state playoffs under head coach Gustavo Corrales. Their latest loss in District 31-5A to McAllen Memorial (77-44) still kept the Wolverines at 2-1 in district play. The Wolverines play the Raiders Jan. 5th.

(Edinburg, Tx)-Whatever Lottie Zarate brings to any basketball program, her players seem to buy into it quickly. She has won numerous of district titles in her young career while at Santa Rosa and Brownsville Veterans Memorial. Now, after accepting her third head coaching job, her first in Class 5A, she has brought the same chemistry that has made her successful in years past to firstyear 5A program, 30-5A Edinburg Vela High School. With players from Edinburg High, Edinburg North and Edinburg Economedes, Edinburg Vela girls basketball coach Lottie Zarate was worried about chemistry when setting a foundation for her first-year program. “Chemistry was one of the worries I had, but the girls got along pretty fast,” says Zarate. The Lady SaberCats are 17-4 overall and 7-0 in District 30-5A play, ahead of powerhouse Sharyland, Edinburg, and Edinburg North. Her latest victory was a 12-point win over Edinburg High. The Lady SaberCats’ best player, senior post Emily Azubell, comes not from one of the aforementioned big schools, but Edinburg IDEA Quest, a charter school. Azubell has sparked Vela, averaging 18.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.9 blocks and 3.1 steals. Other players are sophomore guard Ariel Rodriguez (14.5 ppg, 2.9 apg, 2.1 spg), and Larissa Navarro. One of the main reasons the Lady Panthers are on fire is with the power play of center Laura Van Tilburg, a 6’2 junior who finished the game with eight blocked shots. She also scored 10 points. Senior forward Denise Vasquez and sophomore guard Angela Villarreal each had a block a piece. The Lady Panthers have won two tournaments in non-district action and also lost in the finals of the McAllen Border Bash Championships to San Antonio Churchill on December 1st. Other wins against McAllen Nikki Rowe, El Paso Coronado, Edinburg Vela, Sharyland, and Harlingen could prove that these Lady Panthers could be headed for the State 5A Tournament. Should the Lady Panthers win the district title, they will play the fourth place team from 32-5A in the first round.

Boys Texas HS Selection By Fans

2012-13 RIO GRANDE VALLEY BASKETBALL

UIL All-Century Team (Austin, Tx)-The University Interscholastic League, as part of its Centennial Celebration, announced the UIL All-Century Boys Basketball Teams as selected by the fans. Fans cast more than 5,500 votes for their favorite boys basketball players in Texas high school history and what a list Texas High School Basketball has produced throughout the years with many players going to the NBA, winning titles too. For the past 100 years, UIL athletes have given fans some of the most memorable and exciting moments in sports. The UIL would like to recognize these outstanding performers as it celebrates a century of excellence. Probably the most noticeable Texas High School Basketball player was San Antonio Cole’s 7’2 center, Shaquille O’Neal. He led the Cole Cougars to a perfect 36-0 record and a State 3A title in 1989. Cole went on to play for LSU and then opted to go to the NBA draft and was picked No.1 by the Oralndo Magic in 1992. O’Neal won four NBA Titles throughout his 19-year career in the NBA. He retired in 2011. He also won an Olympic Gold medal in 1996. Another high school basketball player from Texas was Chris Bosh from Dallas Lincoln High School. He led Lincoln to the State 4A title with a perfect 40-0 record and national title in 2002. He was a first round No. 4 overall pick in the NBA and won a title with Miami in 2012.

State 5A Region IV Championships

UTPA Edinburg to Hosts Class

2012-13 RIO GRANDE VALLEY BASKETBALL

5A Region IV Tournament (Edinburg, Tx)-If there is anyone from South Texas that dreams of making it to the State 5A Region IV Tournament, that person would have to be head coach David Keith of the Sharyland Rattlers. The Rattlers won the District 30-5A title in 2012 but failed to make it past the first round, losing to Laredo Nixon 55-42. In 2011, again the Rattlers lost in the first round to Laredo United 56-52. In 2010, the Rattlers were ousted by United 61-33, again in the first round. Hopefully, in 2013 the Rattlers will take it to another

level and win out and make it to the UTPA Field House, site of the Class 5A Region IV Boys and Girls Tournament. The winner advances to the State 5A Championships in Austin, Texas at the Frank Erwin Center in March. This will be the first-time ever that the Rio Grande Valley will host the prestigious Univeristy Interscholastic League event featuring 32-teams from the San Antonio, Laredo, and Rio Grande Valley. Two brackets list the top four teams from each district and the winner from each bracket meets in the regional finals.

The Panthers, seeking their school’s sixth state crown, jumped out to a two touchdown lead with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. But they were outscored 28-7 the rest of the way. Hutchinson’s 43-yard run midway through the third quarter and 2-point pass to Dalton Mathis brought the Bulldogs all the back, tying the game at 21-all. Thomas’ third touchdown, a 1-yard run, put the Panthers back up, but then Isaiah Llewellyn answered for Stamford on an 8-yard dash. Bo Wimberly had seven receptions for 133 yards for Stamford.

Stephenville Wins 5th Title

(Arlington, Tx)-Stephenville Quarterback Tyler Jones accounted for nine touchdowns — five passing and four rushing — and Stephenville set a record for points in a championship game, beating El Campo, 7035, for the Class 3A Division I title Friday night at Cowboys Stadium. Jones had 432 yards passing and 124 on the ground, and Brice Gunter had nine catches for 158 yards and three touchdowns as Stephenville broke the previous 11-man scoring record of 69 held by Sulphur Springs (2008) and Aledo (2010). Stephenville (13-1) won the title in its first season in 3A after winning four titles in 4A in the 1990s, all under Baylor coach Art Briles. El Campo also moved from 4A this year. Quarterback Bryce Brandl led El Campo (14-1) with 149 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the second title game in the school’s 101-year history. El Campo also lost in 1967. Brandl, who also had 131 yards passing, scored on a 44-yard run to pull El Campo within 42-35 late in the third quarter, but Stephenville answered with four more scores.
