It’s All About
The Game In high school, this baseball player was all business. He would walk to the pitching mound with an intense look, only to intimidate his opponents with his fast balls and wicked curve balls. He was a lefty too. Anyone, who has stood in the batter’s box, will tell you that a curve ball coming right at you, at full speed, will knockdown any batter, or put them off balance, with the fear of getting hit. For Sharyland pitcher, Jaime Garcia, his balls would land right into the catcher’s mitt for another strikeout. Too many to count too. This is about a 15year old student who came from Mexico, with hopes of achieving his dreams of getting an education. That he did brilliantly too. He took many courses and accelerated himself by obtaining good grades. On the playing field, he also had one love. Baseball. He believed that one day he would be playing major league baseball as a profession. With sacrifice and dedication, he worked harder every year in high school. For his dedicated work, he was named to the AP AllState team. Many might assume, that baseball is an easy sport, especially for a pitcher. For Garcia, he was drafted in the 30th round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2004. He chose not to sign. In 2005, the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 22nd round and it took Garcia almost five years to play his first full season in the majors. In 2011, only his second season, helped the Cardinals make it all the way to the World Series. In the series, Jaime’s dream finally, came true. He was pitching in the World Series. He also, helped his team win one too. “This is amazing. I would dream that one day I would be here. But, in my second season,” says Garcia. “Dreams do come true.” 2011 World Series Champion! 700 WINS TOGETHER! BASKETBALL HEAD COACH NORA ZAMARIPPA OF THE HARLINGEN LADY CARDINALS HITS CAREER MILESTONE.
(Edinburg, Texas)-This 700th win did not come easy for Harlingen basketball head coach Nora Zamarippa but in the end, her eyes were filled with tears and emotions as she looked for her mother, Joyce Williams in the crowd. “This win is for my Mom. She has always been there for me. This win is special,” said Zamarippa. Both mother and daughter embraced with smiles and tears. The Lady Cardinals were up ten points in the fourth quarter but watched it all go away when Edinburg North’s Vicky Pena stole the ball and scored with 3:29 to play to put the Lady Cougars ahead 45-44. But in the end, senior Demmee Rodriguez pointed at her head coach and said “this one’s for you” and converted two free throw attempts with :24

seconds left to play to put the Lady Cards up 49-46. Zamarippa started her head coaching career 1982 at Edinburg High School where she led her teams to the state playoffs from 1986 through 1989. In 1987, the Lady Bobcats went undefeated in district and in 1988, they advanced to the regional semifinals against San Antonio Clark. After the 1989 season, Zamarippa went to the Harlingen Lady Cardinals and there, she has won nine district titles, 12 bi-district championships, four area titles, two regional quarter championship titles, and two regional semifinal appearances. In 2011, Zamarippa watched her 81-year mother struggle, fighting for her life, but quickly mentioned the power of prayer. “My mom taught me a lot about faith while I was growing up. We prayed for her when she needed it the most. Now, she’s here today,” added Zamarippa. Edinburg North head coach Jenny Rae Gaytan-Garcia presented the coaching legend with the game ball. “She deserves it and I have a lot of respect for her. We lost to a great coach,” she added. The Lady Cardinals are now 11-0 for the season and Zamarippa would love to add a district title in 2012. “That would be perfect.”

Guess Who’s No.1? Roma Gladiators surge to No.1 Boys Rankings; Hidalgo Early College Clinches 32-4A title
(Roma, Texas)-The 32-4A defending champions, Roma Gladiators (21-7) defeated Hidalgo Early College in double-overtime to remain undefeated in district with a perfect 14-0 record, clinching at least a share of the title. This year’s team is on a mission. Players still remember their teammate Robert Joe Garza II, who died last March during a AAU basketball game at 17-years old. His number 33 is still remembered with silence at every home game. Players have taken turns wearing Garza’s jersey throughout this season and the jersey has become somewhat, mystic. Two banners hang in the gym memorializing Garza while members of the Roma student council wear shirts with his no. 33 printed on each one. Second-year head coach Abelardo Escobar wears a pin with Garza’s picture too. Key wins over Hidalgo, Mission Veterans, and Brownsville Veterans keeps the Gladiators on track of winning the district title. Last season, the Gladi-

At No.2, the Sharyland (20-10, 8-1) are riding an eight-game hot streak with wins over every 30-5A opponent, including their latest 74-73 2OT win over McAllen Nikki Rowe. With four remaining games left, only McAllen Memorial stands in their way with a 7-3 record in district. Head coach David Keith is pleased with his team’s success and talked about “playing together” from the start of the season. The Rattlers feature the Pistokache brothers, senior, Joaquin and freshmen Jesse. Both have combined for 30 points per game. Both players are 6’3” and hopefully, will lead the Rattlers to a district title and past the first round of the State 5A playoffs. In 2011, the Rattlers lost to Laredo United 56-52 in overtime. At No.3 the red-hot Harlingen Cardinals (22-6, 6-3) could win the 31-5A title in 2012 behind head coach Greg Yates. They will need some help along the way. Against Edinburg North (16-11, 7-2), the Redbirds flew past the Cougars without a doubt, winning 72-42 last week. The Cardinals have four games remaining, with Edinburg (2/10) and Harlingen South on February 14th.

The Cardinals raced through the state playoffs in Class 5A last season by advancing all the way to the regional semifinals. They posted wins over Weslaco (64-49), Nikki Rowe (52-51), and Brownsville Rivera (67-57) to reached the fourth round. At No.4, the Harlingen South Hawks have been sticking around throughout the season, behind Edinburg North just waiting for an opportunity to move up in the District 31-5A standings. After the Harlingen Cardinals knocked off Edinburg North, the loss put the Hawks in first place. A district title for head coach Brian Molina would be much deserved. But first, the Hawks need to finish out the season with wins over Edinburg North, Edinburg, Economedes, and Harlingen on February 14th. Should the Hawks win out, they definitely deserve the 31-5A title. In the playoffs, the Hawks lost in 2011 in the first round to Brownsville Hanna 57-49 and again in 2010 to Brownsville Porter (53-49). In 2009, Molina won the State 5A

State (McAllen, Texas)-He took up duties to become the McAllen ISD Interim Athletic Director in 2011 while the search to find a replacement after McAllen ISD AD, Baldemar “Poppy” Rodriguez’s retired in June 2011. Now, Mario Reyna will take up another opportunity to officiate in his first University Interscholastic League’s State Boys Basketball Tournament on March 8-10th at the Frank Erwin Center at Austin, Texas. “This is exciting for our crew from the Rio Grande Valley,” says Reyna. “For me, it’s a priviledge to be part of the state tournament.” The TASO Rio Grande Valley Chapter will get notice of which boy’s semifinal games they officiate and the possiblity of being selected for the championship game in either Class 1A through 5A will remain at the discretion

of UIL Officials. Reyna, along with Shawn Spanihel, Arnold Garcia, and atlernate Freddy Martinez all will travel to Austin but for now, “we need to polish on our skills and be more aware of what to expect. These games we do locally and during the state playoffs will help us individually,” adds Reyna. All TASO Officials are selected by the University Interscholastic League and and Reyna says that this will be his first state tournament that he will officiate and considers it an honor to have been selected i n 2012.

At No.5, the defending 32-2A champions, Santa Rosa Warriors will be looking to return to the State 2A playoffs with senior Aaron Ramirez (6’4”) in the lineup and healthy. The Warriors went four rounds deep in the state playoffs in 2011 with wins over San Antonio Randolph (56-50 OT), Poth (56-45), before losing to Halletsville 71-47 in the regional semifinals. To date, the Warriors, coached by Johnny Cipriano have won their last five games over IDEA Frontier College Prep (76-41), Premont (83-43), Hebbronville (88-22), Falfurrias (50-31), and Riviera-Kaufer (99-43) to remain 5-0 in district play, unchallenged. In 2010, the Warriors also lost to Halletsville in the re-
gional semifinals 63-55. Ramirez led the Warriors as a freshmen to the State 2A Tournament in Austin, Texas with an exciting overtime win against San Antonio Randolph 63-62 in the regional finals to get to the Frank Erwin Center. At No.6, the 30-5A defending champions, McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors (8-3) are still scratching their heads after dropping a double-ovetime loss to the Sharyland Rattlers two weeks ago. The loss puts the Warrior’s possible district title on the line and head coach Jose Yerba would love to bounce back from that 74-73 loss. Now, after knocking off McAllen 72-60 on January 27th, the Warriors are hoping for a win over McAllen Memorial and La Joya to close out the season and hopefully, Sharyland will drop two games to La Joya Palmview and McAllen Memorial to atleast share the district title. second place again to front runner, 32-4A champions, Roma. The only thing that the Pirates and head politician/coach, Gus Sanchez can hope for now, are votes in the upcoming city elections for commissioner and a great Class 4A playoff run. With the new realignments, the Pirates are expected to move down in the classifications to 3A. At No. 8, the Edinburg Bobcats find themselves for the first time in four years, just hoping to make the playoffs. After winning four consecutive 31-5A District titles under head coach Zeke Cuellar, the Bobcats (7-3) are currently tied in 3rd place with Harlingen (7-3) with Harlingen South (9-1) two games ahead in first place, followed by Edinburg North (8-2). At No.9, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs are back. After dropping close games to La Joya Palmview (49-47), Sharyland (44-35), and McAllen (45-42), head coach Sam Cortez would love to see the Mustangs finish off the season with paybacks. The Mustangs play Sharyland, Nikki Rowe, Donna, and Palmview to close out their season. The Mustangs are led by Juan “Papito” Gonzalez, Jordan Rosales, Gus Martinez, and Michael Hinojosa. At No.10, the La Joya Palmview Lobos would like to break the jinx by making the playoffs for the first time in school history under head coach Andy Saenz. To make the playoffs, the Lobos need to win of two games against either Sharyland, Donna, McAllen, or McAllen Memorial. “By the grace of God, making the playoffs will be a great journey,” says Saenz. Lady Bulldogs Fighting for Playoff Spot (McAllen, TX)-As the season winds down, Valley girls basketball teams are scrambling to make the playoffs with one week left to play. In District 30-5A, things have changed. Three teams are alive for the final two spots. After two straight losses to McAllen Nikki Rowe and Mission H.S., the McAllen Lady Bulldogs find themselves in a big mess with only two games left to play on its District 30-5A regular season schedule. Rowe and Sharyland have both clinched playoff spots in Class 5A. That leaves two spots in District 30-5A up for grabs. La Joya, Mission, and McAllen are still in contention. Head coach Rene G, Garza would love to see his Lady Eagles surprise the field by winning out. Should they win out, the Lady Eagles are in the playoffs. But they will need La Joya to beat McAllen in their season finale to complicate things a bit. “It’s going to fun. We lost two straight games and now we need to win them back,”

Teams already clinching spots are the Lady Cardinals, PSJA North Lady Raiders, and the North Cougars. On the bubble are Harlingen South and Edinburg. What a difference one year makes. The Lady Hawks, defending champions in District 31-5A and a regional tournament qualifier last year, is tied
in fourth place with Edinburg High at 6-6. Now, one team will be eliminated as both meet this week to decided the final playoff spot. The Lady Bobcats advanced to the State 5A Region IV tournament last year and have struggled in 2012 with new players in the lineup. The Lady Raiders were impressive against the Lady Cougars winning 70-42 by converting 11 3-pointers. PSJA North has made 169 3-pointers this season and is led by senior Cassie Alemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 41. Ileen Torres has 40, Kirsten Sifuentes 36 and Brenda Borrego 32.

TABC Rankings In District 32-5A, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons have wrapped up the district title with a perfect 14-0 record and are currently ranked 25th in the State 5A. Head coach Kim Edquist is excited with her team’s finish but is surprised. “We did a great job playing basketball every week. Playing a tough non-district schedule helped prepare us in district play,” adds Edquist. Finishing in second place are the Weslaco Lady Panthers (27-8), while last season’s defending champions, San Benito have also clinched a playoff spot. Teams still alive for the final 32-5A spot are Brownsville Rivera, Pace, Hanna, and Porter. In District 32-4A, the Hidalgo Early College Lady Pirates ran away with the title with a perfect 16-0 record and finished off the season at 32-2. The Lady Pirates are ranked No.17 in the State 4A and will enter the playoffs with hopes of returning to the state tournament. The Lady Pirates advanced to the State 4A Region IV tournament last year. They are led by fouryear starter Nelly Flores, who averages 21 points per game. Against Mercedes, Flores score 15 points in

Weslaco East’s 37-19 win over Roma, left Lady Wildcats coach Chris Kromer high-fiving and fist pumping with his players on the bench. Weslaco East (18-15, 10-5 District 32-4A) needed this win. It was a desperate one too. “It is the biggest win of the season,” Kromer said. The Lady Wildcats held Roma to two points for nearly the entire second half before the Lady Gladiators tacked on six in the final 2:32. Overall, the Lady Wildcats have not allowed more than 20 points against eight teams

In District 32-3A, ten years later, the La Feria Lionettes won their first outright 32-3A title as they defeated Rio Hondo 44-25 on Tuesday night. Lionettes head coach Angel Martinez said was excited about their win and district title. “This feeling is indescribable right now and we accomplished a goal that we set out for when the season began. I am so proud of the girls and now we get to put a gold trophy in the case.”

Surprises Valley Schools
(Edinburg, Tx)-At the Region I headquarters, Jack Damron, executive director kept a tight lip and hands on the sealed UIL box until 9:00 a.m. “It’s now time to open the box,” said Damron as coaches rushed to the front to receive their much anticipated University Interscholastic League new realignment packages. “This is very surprising,” said Harlingen CISD athletic director, Randy Cretors. “I didn’t see this one coming. We are moving again.” This marks the third straight realignment that the Harlingen schools have been moved. Now, they will compete in District 32-5A, along with six Brownsville schools and Los Fresnos. The 32-4A football champions and regional finalist, Weslaco East, moved up to District 31-5A, along with Weslaco and will be matched with all the PSJA and McAllen Schools. San Benito will also be paired with the new district realignment. “We anticipated this all along. Our school has grown and now we have to step it up every Friday night,” says Cuellar. In 32-4A, La Joya JuarezLincoln and Weslaco East moved up to the 5A ranks, while Mission dropped to the 4A level and will play in Dis-
trict 32-4A. “I did not expect all the La Joya schools to be paired with all the Edinburg schools. This was very surprising,” said La Joya ISD Athletic Director Victor Garza. Hidalgo Early College dropped from 4A to 3A, and will compete in 32-3A.

Lady Chargers, Gladiators Win 32-4A Swim Titles
(Roma, Texas)-At the District 32-4A Swim Meet, Brownsville Veterans Memorial girls swim team captured its first district title by winning the 200-yard medley relay and Yolanda Salazar also won the 200 -yard individual medley to give the Lady Chargers its first-ever title. In the boys division, Anthony Guerra won the 100-yard backstroke event to give the Roma Gladiators the 324A title. Sharyland, Porter Showing Early Signs of Success
(Brownsville, Texas)-Two teams from the Class 5A Region IV Soccer Championships ended up in the University Interscholastic League’s State 5A Soccer Championships played at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, Texas. The former 2008 state champions, Brownsville Porter Cowboys defeated Brownsville Lopez 2-0 in the Region IV finals played at the Brownsville Sports Complex and then, San Antonio Johnson Lady Jaguars eliminated McAllen 5-1 in the semifinals and then beat SanAntonio MacArthur 2-0 in the regional finals. Both advanced to the state semifinals in 2011. Both lost. But, this year’s Region IV Tournamentcould have a state champion. In 2012, this could be a dawn of a new team emerging as the soccer squad to beat. The 30-5A Sharyland Rattlers captured the 30th annual Brownsville ISD Tournament for the second time in three years by defeating Laredo LBJ 2-1 in Saturday’s final at Brownsville Sports Park. The Rattlers celebrated and hoisted the championship trophy for winning the three-day, 27-team event played at the site of the Class 5A Region IV tournament, Brownsville Sports Complex. for Sharyland to play in the BISD Tournament final. The Rattlers won it with a 1-0 victory over Hanna in 2010 but fell victims to Porter in the 2011 BISD final 1-0. At the Hidalgo-Valley View Tournament showcase, Brownsville Rivera captured the championship by defeating crosstown rival Brownsville Pace 2-0 in the final on goals by junior forward Luis Lopez and freshman outside midfielder Isidro Martinez. In more action, last season’s 2011 State 5A semifinalist, Brownsville Porter won the Boerne Champion Hill Country Shootout by going 3-1 in the tournament. The Cowboys defeated San Antonio Clark 4-3 (shootout), San Antonio Lee 6-0 and Boerne Champion 3-0 while losing to Austin St. Stephen’s 2-1. Porter finished in a three-way tie for the tournament championship and took the title on a goal differential. At the Pat Leal Tournament in McAllen, San Benito reached the final before losing to Edinburg High 2-0, while Brownsville Lopez took third place with a 2-0 victory over Brownsville Veterans. Brownsville Hanna took second in the Corpus Christi Tournament with a 4-1 record, losing 2-1 to Alamo Heights in the final, as Jose Humberto de la Garza, Carlos Acevedo and Felix Becerra each scored three goals. In girls action, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks will be looking to defend their title in 31-5A with Elise Fennegan leading the group of new faces. “It’s definitely a rebuilding year for us,” South coach Omar Pedroza said. “We lost seven starters from last year. I told the girls at the beginning of the season that hard work will help us this season.”

(McAllen, Texas)-It was a special day for the parents of McAllen High School kicker, Jose Arzate. Their son was about to sign a football scholarship to play for West Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas. As Jose Sr., and his wife Diana watched their son sign, the senior Class 5A All-State kicker became very emotional when he talked about God and his parents. “God gave me this opportunity to play at the next level. My parents helped me believe that no matter who brings you down, God will always be there to pick you right up,” said Arzate. Like most athletes, every student/athlete has a story of the hardships they have endured as an athlete in high school. Some athletes have dealt with prejudice, some athletes have dealt with who’s who, while others have not had the financial gains that will help them get to the next level for recognition at football camps. “I wanted to attend the Kohl’s Football Kicking Camp in Dallas, Texas this past December. It would have given me national exposure. But, the fee was beyond

Best the Best! Harlingen QB Kevin Ledesma Named HSSM’s MVP for 2011
(Harlingen, Texas)-Ever since Harlingen High School quarterback Kevin Ledesma played in that thrilling, 45-44 double-overtime win against seven-time state champions, Abilene on September 17, 2011 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. It was then, that Ledesma understood that his Cardinals could match up with anyone in the state of Texas. He led the Cardinals to it’s fourth consecutive 31-5A District title, followed by a berth in the State 5A Division I Quarterfinals against San Antonio Madison. Despite their 42-27 loss to the Mavericks at Javelina Stadium on December 2nd, Ledesma still, wanted to play more football. But, time had run out. Game time. Cardinal head coach Manny Gomez walked on over to embrace Ledesma and told him that “things will be alright.” For two straight seasons, the 5’8” senior led his Cardinals to two district titles with perfect seasons. He finished his senior year with 2, 522 yards passing and 27 touchdowns. He also ran 157 times for 1,075 yards and 20 TDs. Against Abilene, he had his best game ever by completing 28 of 41 passes for 340 yards and four scores. HSSM names Kevin Ledesma All-South Texas MVP. Like Ledesma, McAllen Memorial quarterback Matthew Kaufmann (5’8, 170lbs) led the Mustangs to its first 30-5A District title since 2006 and also back-to-back Class 5A Division II Regional appearances. A four-year starter since 2008, Kaufmann will hopefully, attend West Point Academy this fall. The Mustang (12-1) quarterback did the improbable in 2011 by leading his team to a perfect season, before falling 35-28 to San Antonio
number in South Texas as the best defense, allowing 172 points scored in 12 games, with two shutouts. He had 131 tackles, 18 hurries, four blocked kicks, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He was also named to the Class 5A AP All-State First team selections in 2011. HSSM names Weslaco’s DE Jose Montiel as the All-South Texas Defensive Player of the Year. High School Sports Magazine’s first team offensive linemen are Carlos Cuellar, Weslaco East; Mike Rodriguez, Weslaco HS; Hector Orozco, Brownsville Rivera, Ralph Rubalcaba, Raymondville; and Aureliano Silva of Port Isabel. Silva captured first team Class 3A All-State with Cuellar (2nd team Class 4A), and Rodriguez (Class 5A honorable mentioned). Rubalcaba was also a Class 3A honorable mentioned. Reagan in the regional finals at McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium on November 26th. He led the team with 1,280 yards passing and 11 TDs and also ran for 2,107 yards and 30 touchdowns. Against Reagan, Kaufmann rushed 31 times for 201 yards. A fumble in the closing minutes by Kaufmann in the endzone, ended any hopes for winning a state championship in 2011. ardo Fraire. All three eclipsed the 1,000 rushing mark and led their districts. Munguia finished his career with 2,392 yards and 33 TDs. His best game camne in the second round of the State 4A Division I Area Championships against Victoria East, rushing for 312 yards on 43 carries and five touchdowns. Against Cedar Park, Munguia was stopped 29 times for 109 yards to end his high school career as a Wildcat. Most of the time, Blake was kept off the field in the fourth quarter, despite rushing for 1,674 yards with 20 TDs on 246 carries. His best game of the year was against PSJA North, rushing for 227 yards on 19 carries and two

If there was one running back that was a true workhorse, earning every yard every Friday night, that player would have to be Eduardo Fraire. He led Donna back to the state playoffs in Class 5A and a last-second loss to Sharyland was the turning point to the Redskins winning a district title in 2011. Weslaco, Edinburg Players Named to First Team on 5A All-State
(McAllen, Texas)-Both players were explosive on defensive in 2011. Both were big-time play makers. Weslaco H.S. defensive end Jose Montiel and Edinburg H.S. defensive back, Salvador Martinez were named to the first team Class 5A AP All-State team. “Jose did a great job for us. He was a three-year starter and we will miss him,” says head coach Tony Villarreal. Montiel had led the Panthers to back-to-back 32-5A district titles and bi-district championships too. Montiel also led the Panthers to two straight area appearances. He had 19 quarterback sacks in 2011 to go long with his 76 solo tackles. Edinburg’s Martinez was the big-playmaker for the Bobcats. He was the all-purpose player who ran back four touchdowns off four interceptions and led the Bobcats to two straight playoff appearances, which included one bidistrict and area titles in 2010. Also named to the AP Class 5A lists were 2nd-team DB Kyle Carter of Brownsville Pace. (Refugio, Texas)-Sophomore quarterback Travis Quintanilla passed for 372 yards and three touchdowns as Refugio stopped Cisco on fourth-and-short in the final minute to hold on for a 36-35 victory in the Class 2A Division II championship game Friday at Cowboys Stadium in December 2011. Refugio (15-0), which won its first state title since taking the 2A crown in 1970, led 36-19 early in the fourth quarter. Cisco (14-1) pulled within a point with two minutes left when Refugio opted for a safety rather than punting out of the end zone. Refugio’s Jack Gumm recovered a fumble to set up Shilo Whetsel’s 5-yard touchdown run that capped a run of 22 consecutive points and gave Refugio its 36-19 lead with 8:34 remaining. Quintanilla, was 20 of 25. Six completions went to Cory Brown, who had 110 receiving yards and a touchdown. This was the kind of year that the 15-year old experienced in 2011. Tenaha QB Davis Named Offensive Player of Year
BRYAN, Texas (AP) — Tenaha quarterback Reginald Davis and Mason defensive back Chance Stockbridge, who led their teams to state championships, head up the 61st Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state team. Davis was the offensive player of the year. The 185-pound senior who has pledged to Texas Tech passed for 2,015 yards on 101 of 168 with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 172 carries for 1,915 yards with 36 TDs in leading the unbeaten Tigers to the 1A Division II title. Stockbridge was the defensive player of the year. The 138-pound senior had a school-record 13 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns in the leading the unbeaten Punchers to the 1A Division I championship. In the UIL State 1A-Division II Championships game, Quarterback Reginald Davis ran for 242 yards and two touchdowns, passed for 226 yards and three TDs and returned a punt 80 yards for a score as Tenaha beat Munday, 52-28, and won the Class 1A Division II title. Tenaha scored 21 unanswered points to open the second half, including touchdowns off two turnovers, in front of 5,592 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Thursday night. Davis, who has committed to Texas Tech, was the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. He was 10-of-21 passing and accounted for 314 all-purpose yards for the 14-0 Tigers. JAIME GARCIA, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher 2011 World Series Baseball Champions
It took the former Sharyland HS pitcher almost six years to debut as a Major League Baseball player who was drafted right our of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the 30th round. Instead, Garcia choose to re-enter the draft in 2005 and this time, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 22nd round. He made his major league debut in 2008 on July 11th but then underwent Tommy John Surgery, ending his season. After spending his 2009 season in the minors, Tony LaRussa made the call to bring him up to the majors. He finished with a 13-8 overall record and was named to the Baseball America’s 2010 All-Rookie Team. In 2011, Jaime pitched in his first-ever World Series and became a World Champion. Jaime Garcia talks with HSSM Sports Director, David A. Amador. HSSM: What a moment! What a career! Now, you are a MLB World Series Baseball Champion! Has it sunk in yet Jaime? Jaime: It didn’t think it would happen this soon. This is my third year in the big leagues. This has been a dream since I was a little kid. It’s real exciting. At the same time, it’s time to turn the page and get ready for 2012. HSSM: Your baseball career started right here in the Rio Grande Valley as a junior at Sharyland High School with head coach Bart Bickerton giving you your first start.

HSSM: Watching you pitched on the mound in high school, you looked intense and all business. Were you on a mission as senior playing baseball? Jaime: That was my mentality. I love this game and I was always trying to play my best.
Jaime: This is where I call home. This where I live in the offseason. He’s a great coach. He does a great job. Good guy. I am very grateful to him.
HSSM: You came to the United States from Mexico to get educated in high school? Was it worth it? Should both countries work together to help students like yourself to continue with education at a higher level?
HSSM: Do you have any kind words to say for Coach Bick-
Jaime: Definitely. I will always be grateful. I was a good stu-
dent who wanted to excel in the classroom. HSSM: How many nights did you spend sleepless, dreaming of becoming a major league baseball player? Jaime: Too many. HSSM: It took almost six years to reach the major league diamond and complete a full season as a rookie. You did that in 2010. And then the World Series. How was that experience? Jaime: My first game was a dream come true. I was nervous. In the World Series, I had butterflies in my stomach. Once the game started, I did a pretty good job. HSSM: Having to sit out in 2009 with surgery to your pitching elbow, did you feel you would make a come back?
Jaime: I never doubted myself. I knew I would comeback even better. I worked really hard when I rehab. HSSM: Let’s talk about your involvement with the March of Dimes? Why? Jaime: It’s exciting to help a good cause. I’m glad to part of this organization. HSSM: What advice can you give every player from South Texas who loves playing baseball and would like to go to the next level? Jaime: Any dreams that you have will come true.
