“Tddave” with Harlingen Cardinals (McAllen, Tx)-It just took one moment and one big hit for High School Sports Magazine’s Tddave to be recognized nationally by ESPN on November 20th. “ESPN called our office and asked to air the “Big Hit” segment and four hours later it was featured on the “Highly Questionable Show” on ESPN2. ESPN Commentators, Bomani Jones, Papi, and Dan Lebatard all shared a laugh watching the video and Lebatard said,“He’s (Tddave) excellent at his job...Excellent!” Since then, it has gone nationwide and worldwide with DailyMail.co.uk., Yahoo!, CBS

The national attention started with one video submitted on You Tube with Tddave video taping the Harlingen Cardinals getting ready to play McAllen Memorial in the Class 5A 5A Division I Bi-District Championships on Saturday, November 16th in McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. And then it happened. The Live with Jimmy Fallon Show on NBC aired it live on Monday, November

18th showing the popular sports reporter tackled, not seen by Harlingen football player linemen, Arnaldo Hernandez (72) during the running out of the Cardinal inflatable but he continues filming while getting trampled, upside down, with the camera video taping upside down too. “That was a hard hit but putting the Harlingen Cardinals and the Rio Grande Valley on the national scene was priceless,” says Amador. More than 30,000,000 million viewers have seen the video nationwide since.

District 30-5A teams, Sharyland, Edinburg North, and 32-3A Champions, Port Isabel Dominate the Region IV playoffs. All Three Teams are Headed back to the State IV Football Regional Finals labeled as “Black Friday” by most Thanksgiving shoppers. Can All Three Teams Win a State Title?

(Harlingen, Tx)-Yalerson Castillo of Harlingen High School just feel to his knees and started sobbing after their 23-20 loss to Sharyland in the State 5A Division I Area Championships on Saturday at Boggus Stadium. Filled with emotions, a Harlingen staff member came and hugged Castillo. “This hurts so much,” the senior told the Cardinal assistant coach. Yalerson Castillo, Harlingen HS senior was overwhelmed with emotions after their 23-20 loss to Sharyland in the Class 5A Division I Area finals. (HSSMImages/David Amador)

In the University Interscholastic Leagues’ annual football playoffs, many football players like Castillo dream of winning a state football title but those dreams fade away as their opponents celebrate with tears too. But, those tears are tears of joy. “I love you all,” Sharyland head football coach, Ron Adame told his team after their win over Harlingen. “We beat a darn good football team and that’s what we are suppose to do in the playoffs.” In the Rio Grande Valley, the UIL labels this area as Region IV in sports. The UIL has four regions in Texas which one

overall winner from each region advances to the state semifinals in any sport and then plays each other for the ultimate prize: a state championship. Only the 1961 Donna Redskins have experienced this moment in Valley history when they defeated Quanah 28-21 in the Class 2A Championships. That spirit is still alive with every Donna Redskin fan. “That spirit never dies, we made history,” says Manny Moreno, Donna ISD Athletic Director. “These players today know how special it was and it still means alot today.” As the UIL State Football playoffs con-

tinue this weekend, three Rio Grande Valley teams still have a shot at winning a state football title. With four games left to play in the playoff brackets, the road to the state title will be played in Arlington at the AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Most importantly, home of this year’s UIL State Football Championships which will feature all teams from 1A to 5A in Division I and II beginning at 12:00 noon on December 19-21st. More than 300,000 fans attended last year’s finals. “It’s an event to see and be part of, says Touchdown Dave of HSSM.

(Harlingen, Texas)-Football fans waited for one extra day to watch the Harlingen Cardinals (10-2) and Sharyland Rattlers (12-0) meet in the Class 5A Division I Area Championships game, a rematch from 2012. In the end, the Rattlers defense proved to be the deciding factor in their 23-20 win over the Cardinals played on November 23rd at Boggus Stadium. “I love you guys. This is what you are suppose

to do in the playoffs, beat good teams like Harlingen,” Sharyland told his players after his second win over Harlingen in the state playoffs. The Rattlers will now play San Antonio Madison at 2:00 p.m. at Buccaneer Stadium on Friday in Corpus Christi, Texas. It was the perfect Thanksgiving for Adame, who has led the Rattlers to a 24-1 record in his first two years as a head football coach in his career. “I attribute this success to my staff and team,” added Adame. The Cardinals did have their chances. Many Cardinal fans were upset about the TASO officiating with less than four minutes to play in the game with Harlingen trailing 23-20. All-purpose player, Sean Landez flew into the end zone with 4:51 left to play in the game to make it 23-20. The extra point attempt was no good. This gave the Cardinals another shot at the endzone after fumbling at the one yard line with 6:02 left in the fourth. On the ensuing kickoff, the Cardinals were flagged for a hold call, prompting Cardinal head coach Manny Gomez to disagree with the position of the ball inside the five yard line. The TASO officials agreed with Gomez. On the next play, QB Brandon Garza launched a 47-yard pass with 3:57 to play, but flags flew for holding in back-to-back series, ending the Cardinals drive. The Cardinal defense did hold the Sharyand offense on the next possession. Facing 4th down and four, Sharyland was setting up to punt from its own 23-yard and that’s when the Cards jumped off sides with 2:10 left to play with no time outs left. Game over. Harlingen’s D.J. Davis guards his area against the Sharyland Rattlers in the Class 5A Division I Area Championships last Saturday. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

UIL Class 5A Division II Area Football Championships Edinburg North

Defeats Harlingen South Again, 39-14 (Edinburg, Tx)-With cold and rainy-blistery conditions, fans weathered out the northern front to watch the Edinburg North Cougars (11-1) defeat the Harlingen South Hawks (10-2) 39-14. The Cougars, just like last season, will play Cibolo Steele in the Class 5A Division II Regional finals at Cabaniss Field on Friday, November 29th. Kickoff is set for

7:00 p.m. “We played a great game tonight and what can I say? Except that I am proud of this senior ball club,” said Roy Garza, head football coach of the Cougars. Adrian Alvarez ran wild and the cold, sleettype of rain only made Alvarez get to the end zone quicker as he rushed for three touchdowns and 207 yards on 20 carries. But, that’s what the Cougars do

The Hawks tried to rattle the Cougars defense with a 63-yard touchdown pass from QB Sean Montemayor to WR Grant Preciado to take a 7-0 lead with 4:00 minutes left to play in the first quarter. But, instead, the Cougars responded with 527 yards on offense.

But, we stayed together and now these players can say they were the District 31-5A champions. How about that?,” said first year head football coach Kevin Brewer. And proud he was too. After capturing the District 31-5A title, a first since 1979, Brewer was filled with emotions headed into the State 5A Division II Bi-District Championships. “I’m just so darn proud of this bunch,” added Brewer. “These players deserve this title.” The Bulldogs (9-2) started off the season with eight straight wins and finished the season with a Class 5A Division II Bi-District Championship loss to Brownsville Rivera 33-21. “So this is what South Texas

Both Weslaco, East Wildcats Fall in Playoffs (Weslaco, Tx)-The Weslaco Panthers (7-4) won the coin flip and hosted the Los Fresnos Falcons (8-4) in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Championships. Panther head coach Tony Villarreal was on a streak with his Panthers, winning four bi-district titles in a row. But, that streak ended with a fumble in overtime as Los Fresnos upset the Weslaco Panthers 28-21. “We just made that

mistake and it will cost you,” said Villarreal. On Saturday afternoon, the Weslaco East (7-4) Wildcats also played host at Bobby Lackey Stadium against the Harlingen South Hawks (10-2) in the Division II 5A bi-district opener. Like the Panthers, the Wildcats lost 42-21 to hand first-year head football coach Mike Burget his first playoff loss in his career. The Weslaco East Wildcats

opened its season with a 28-21 win over Eagle Pass of District 29-5A and followed that win with a loss to 4A powerhouse, Calallen 48-0. In their district opener, the Wildcats defeated PSJA North, who went winless in 2013, by the score of 47-10. In the annual, fierce rivalry, the Wildcats lost to Weslaco 3521. The Wildcats would finish tied for second with Weslaco. The cross town rivals, Weslaco had its chances of winning a district title in 2013 but a costly loss to PSJA dampered the Panthers hopes of sharing the title with McAllen. The Panthers went 1-3 in their last four games while East 3-1 to just make the playoffs. “We played some good teams this year,” said East football coach Mike Burget. Tough Losses! What A Catch! Economedes Let’s One Get Away (Edinburg, Texas)-In the Class 5A Division II Bi-District Championships, don’t remind Edinburg Economedes High School head football coach about the one second that was put back on the clock right before the half. The next play, ahead 19-14, Laredo Alexander faked a field goal to score. The game ended 28-27, with Jags falling short of the second round at Cats Stadium. Bad punts, a missed field goal, and missed extra point seemed to team up with a costly fumble in the end with the Jags up 27-21 after junior Jesus Guzman intercepted a pass and returned it to the Jags’ 33 yard line but a few plays later, the Jags coughed it up

with less than five minutes to play. Plenty of time for the Bulldogs to put together a winning drive. The Bulldogs chewed up the clock with an eleven play drive to make it 28-27. Still, after three fumbles, the Jags still had another opportunity to score with 1:20 to play. Right before the half, a fake field goal by starting quarterback Jesse Serna, who rolled out and found WR Marc Lozoya in the end zone, out jumping three Jag defenders. Alexander took a 21-19 lead as the half expired. The TASO official put :01 second back on the clock after an incompletion took place in the end zone on the prior play.

Rivera Wins Title

(McAllen, Tx)-The 31-5A champions, McAllen Bulldogs (92) ended their season with a 33-21 loss to Brownsville Rivera (5-6) from District 32-5A in the Class 5A Division II Bi-District Championships played at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. “We are bi-district champions,” Rivera head football coach Tom Chavez kept chanting with his team. “I tell you what, this is awesome. Just plain awesome,” said Chavez. Two big plays for Rivera and two big turnovers by McHi was the difference on Friday night. On the opening possession, Rivera spotted Alex Cruz on a 73-yard touchdown pass from QB Danny Elizondo to make it 7-0 lead and with less than three minutes to play, RB Jacquil Evans broke loose on a 72-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs commit back-to-back turnovers right before the half which turned into 13 points for Rivera. “You cannot give up turnovers in the playoffs,” said McAllen head coach Kevin Brewer.

(Roma, Tx)-In his first season as head football coach of the Donna Redskins, Ramiro Leal is pleased, despite the split of athletes which took place earlier this year with Donna North High School. Now, the Redskins, like most fans will wait till February 2014 to await the new realignments. Will this be the last 5A game the Redskins played against the Laredo United (9-2) Longhorns? After their 56-13 loss, maybe moving down to 4A would not be such a bad idea after all. Laredo United quarterback Derek Esparza passed for 495 yards in United’s 56-13 blowout victory Friday in Class 5A Division I bi-district championships played at Roma ISD Stadium. Donna ended its season in third place with an overall record of 7-4. United finished with 659 yards of total offense. Big Run! Pats Season Ends (Laredo, Tx)-At Shirley Field in Laredo, Texas, the Laredo Martin Tigers made history as they defeated Mission Veterans Memorial 40-27 in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Championships. After 76 years, the Martin Tiger team won the school’s first-ever playoff game. Sophomore running back Juan Valdivia rushed for a memorable night, 23 carries for 234 yards and two touchdowns. From the start of the season, Mission Veterans Memorial head coach, Dave Gilpin told HSSM that his Patriots could go three rounds this year. “We have the best quarterback in the Valley. Santos Villarreal has the tools to get this team to the next level,” added Gilpin. And then it happened. With three games left to play in District 32-4A, Villarreal went down with a season-ending injury. A few more players would too. But, senior Edgar Hernandez did not give up. He opened the second half, outscoring the Tigers 20-3 in the third quarter. The Tigers lead went to 33-27. Sophomore Valdivia opened it up in the fourth on a beautiful 75-yard run to put Martin up 40-27. The Mission Veterans had to wait for their final game against PSJA Southwest to see it they would make the post season. They needed Mercedes to beat Mission in their final game, with a win over the Javelinas. “It’s been one of those seasons. I’m just darn proud of this team on how we stayed together to the end,” added Gilpin.

(Corpus Christi, Tx)-”We have nothing to be ashamed of, our team played their best tonight. Flour Bluff was just better,” said Mercedes head football coach Michael Uribe. The District 31-4A champions, Flour Bluff Hornets (10-1) did not waste any time, defeating Mercedes 63-21 in the Class 4A Division II Bi-district Championships at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets scored on their first five possessions, including a 54-yard interception return for a score from Adrian Hynson to end Mercedes High School’s (6-5) bid for a State 4A Division II title in 2013. Ed-Elsa Stunned (Edcouch, Tx)-Hopes for a State 4A title came to an end on a fluke. Edcouch-Elsa (9-2) kicker Oscar Maldonado made many extra points in his career

but the one that counted in overtime sailed wide after WR Diego Garza caught a beautiful leaping catch to make it 27-21 in the first overtime.

The Alice (10-1) offense was next on offense in overtime. Fans were chanting at Benny Layton Sr. Memorial Stadium, but the Coyotes stayed focused to score on a nine yard play by QB Jon Jaramillo. Then the extra point attempt was next. Kicker, Alice’s Alex Castillo’s extra point hit the uprights and the crowd was silent as the Coyotes won 28-27 in the Class 4A Division II bi-district playoff game. Playing without RB Israel Loredo (academic no pass, no play), the Yellowjackets had to make adjustments on offense. Ahead 21-14 with less than a minute to go in regulation, all the Coyotes had to do was hold on to the ball and then it hapBig Gain! pened. QB Jaramillo coughed up the ball with EE’s defense jumping with joy, recovering the football at the Coyote 20-yard line. A few plays later, QB Noe Gonzalez would score from 3-yards out with three seconds left. The extra point tied the game at 21-21. Alice managed to penetrate the Yellowjackets defense with 331 total yards (178 rushing on 46 carries) and held E-E to just 221 total yards. The game stay close all the way to the last three minutes of the game with both teams tied at 14-14. Alice’s RB Joseph Cantu broke loose on a 19-yard run with 2:32 left. Edcouch-Elsa would respond after the kickoff with Gonzalez leading his team to the Alice’s 22 and the costly interception. “I am just heart felt for our players. This was the season these players talked about. We talked about play at state,” says first-year head coach Joe Marichalar of Edcouch-Elsa.

state championship title, says head coach Monty Stumbaugh of Port Isabel. In the bi-district championships, PI easily romped past Raymondville 42-13 and will now play this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Calallen against La Vernia (11-1). A win would send the Tarpons up against the winner of the Cuero/Sinton game in the quarterfinals. Just like last year, the Tarpons seem primed to win it all with a senior class led by DE Jaques Guillot, who leads the defense that has sacked their opponents 28 times this year. On offense, the Tarpons are led by three running backs, Jaime Gonzalez (1,270 yards), Jacob Losoya (1,125), and Isaiah Martinez (911 yards) who give the Tarpons 370 yards rushing on the ground. Can the Tarpons win it all? Stay tuned.

Volleyball State Playoff Highlights (Edinburg, Texas)-The University Interscholastic League’s Class 5A Region IV Volleyball Championships was held at the University of Texas-Pan American Fieldhouse, probably for the last time. Four teams from the South Texas area met in Edinburg to play for a spot in the State 5A Volleyball Championships played at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas on November 22nd and 23rd. “We are just happy to be here,” said McAllen Nikki Rowe head volleyball coach Magda Canales. The Nikki Rowe Lady Warriors, champions from District 31-5A were swept by two-time state champions, San Antonio Churchill (46-3) in three sets 25-21, 25-19, and 25-22. In the first set, Rowe had seven out of bounds shots and Churchill’s sophomore Abby Buckingham (6’2”) blasted eight kills to lead the Lady Chargers with a close 25-21 win in the first set. “We just made too many errors today. I’m proud of our team and the accomplishments we made this season. Churchill is a very good team,” said Canales. The second game of the tournament was almost the same as Brownsville Rivera was swept in three sets by San Antonio Reagan. In the end, the Chargers traded sets with the Lady Rattlers on Saturday afternoon, winning in five sets 25-23, 13-25, 25-21, 1825, and 15-13. “I’m just happy that we survived this incredible match today, said head coach, Jo Ann Hultgren of San Antonio Churchill. The Lady Chargers advanced to the state tournament for the 8th time before losing in the finals to Conroe The Woodlands (44-0) in three sets 25-22, 26-24, 25-17.
