We Solve Sinus Problems. The Honrubia Technique™ for Balloon Sinuplasty The Honrubia Technique™ for Balloon Sinuplasty is a revolutionary, minimally invasive procedure for treating chronic sinusitis. The primary symptoms of chronic sinusitis are headaches, trouble sleeping, snoring, fatigue, facial pressure, ear discomfort, and post nasal drip. The Honrubia Technique™ addresses many of the primary symptoms of chronic sinusitis while maximizing the comfort and safety of the patient. It is recommended by our team of board certified ENT Physicians. This technique involves less pain than a traditional sinus surgery and therefore contributes to a quicker recovery. The Honrubia Technique™ for Balloon Sinuplasty is done under anesthesia. This ensures that patients have a more relaxing and positive experience than when the procedure is performed under a local anesthetic. It also allows us to address several other sinus related complaints. An anesthesia provider administers intravenous medications to keep patients lightly sedated and comfortable. Our South Texas Sinus Institute team of specialists have performed thousands of procedures using the Honrubia Technique™ for Balloon Sinuplasty. Come see us at the South Texas Sinus Institute. We Solve Sinus Problems.

These Are My Shoes... “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end...” Revelation 22:13 Those are words written in the scriptures of the Bible that Edinburg High School senior Isaiah Rios carries as message to the those who witness his shoes that he wears on game days. Like many athletes in high school, many join Christian groups like Fellowship of Christian Athletes, expressing their faith in God. “I believe in God and accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior,” says Rios. In sports, many athletes still pray in their moment in silence, while other student/athletes choose not to worship. The United States Constitution protects the rights of every American. It’s the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and it states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Yes, these are my shoes. HSSM captures the frustrations, dedicated, competitive, head basketball coaches on the courtside at various games throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Coaches love this game of basketball and spend countless of hours with their teams to prepare for Gameday. Their expressions tells it all. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

ROY GARCIA longtime basketball coach loves the game. He dreamed of being a head basketball coach. He became a legend and inspiration in South Texas. Roy Garcia rose from the migrant labor fields of Los Fresnos to become an elite three-sport athlete, earning All-American hoops honors in 1961. He also quarterbacked the Falcon football team. Garcia spent 28 years as the head basketball coach and athletic director of the Mission Eagles. He notched win No. 600 in 2007, coaching San Benito against his alma mater, Los Fresnos. He has won a numerous of district titles throughout his career. At San Benito H.S., after 46 years, the Greyhounds made the playoffs for the first time under Garcia. (HSSMImages/File)

The induction ceremony into the Hall of Fame and All-Star Game took place in Arlington, Texas during the 2010 TGCA Summer Clinic. His battle with cancer slowed down the flamboyant girls basketball coach. A sport he loves, Coach Garza became the first Valley girls coach to serve two terms as TGCA Board of Directors 1999-2003 and 2005-2009. Garza coached the Mission Lady Eagles for sixteen (16) years guiding them to ten (10) State Playoffs appearances. Coach Garza in twenty-eight (28) years of coaching basketball has an overall coaching record of 518 wins with 298 losses. Garza retired with thirty-six (36) years in the educational profession. “I miss this game,” says Garza. High School Sports Magazine/February 26, 2016

UIL State Girls Basketball Championships March 3-5th Alamodome, San Antonio (Edinburg, Texas)-The University Interscholastic League Girls Basketball playoffs tipped off with the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association 6A state-ranked No.4 Harlingen Lady Cardinals (33-1) showing why their ranking means something as head coach Ashley Moncivaiz led her team to a 88-52 victory over 31-6A Edinburg North High School (18-17) on Monday night at Cougar Gym. The Lady Cardinals will now travel to play on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Rio Grande City against 29-6A Laredo

United Lady Longhorns in the area championships. The Lady Cardinals took a 51-16 lead at the half and played most of its reserves throughout the remainder of the game. Second-year head coach Moncivaiz will lead her team for the second year in a row to the 6A Area Championships, with hopes of coming out victorious. In 2015, the Lady Cardinals lost to Laredo United South 66-52. However, Friday night’s game against head coach Rachel Carmona and her 29-6A Lady Longhorns (21-13)

will not be an easy task. Both teams will meet again for the second time this season, with the Lady Cardinals winning its first non-district game in December during the DQ’s Blizzard Bash Tournament. Like the Lady Cardinals, the United Lady Longhorns lost in the area playoffs to PSJA North 49-48 in 2015. Both teams will be hungry for a third round appearance and it looks like Harlingen could be the team that could be headed to a possible State 6A Tournament appearance in San Antonio on

The 31-6A Champions, Weslaco won 59-40 in the Class 6A Bi-District Championships on Monday night as they routed 32-6A fourth place finishers, Brownsville Rivera with plenty of defensive tactics and pressure. “We just turned the ball over,” Brownsville Rivera head coach Willie Brown said. (Pharr, Tx)-If any coach has worked hard to get his team ready in 2016, Rio Grande City (23-11) girls basketball coach Gus Valenciana can atest to this as they defeated 32-5A runnerups, Brownsville Pace (20-13), winning 55-33 in the Class 5A Bi-District Championships at PSJA North HS. Head coach Valenciana just stood for a moment and realized it was their first-ever bi-district title in school history too. Lady Rattlers Jocelyn Amaya, a 5-foot-11 sophomore recorded a game-high 29 points.

McAllen Memorial 63 Laredo United South 66 (Roma, Tx)-Playing on the road can be a plus or a minus. It was a plus for 29-6A Laredo United South as they eliminated 30-6A McAllen Memorial 66-63 in the first round of the 6A playoffs.

HSSM BASKETBALL Playoffs (Sharyland, Tx)-Not many high school athletes get to reach career milestones but for senior, Maddie Garza, she made history on Tuesday night as they defeated Edcouch-Elsa High School in the 2016 University Interscholastic League Class 5A Bi-District Girls Basketball playoffs. She eclipsed the 1,000 rebound and scoring marks as a four-year varsity player. “She’s been special,” says head coach Dale Whitaker. “I have enjoyed watching Maddie play basketball. She’s special.” Against the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets, Garza scored 15 points and grabbed the needed rebounds to set her school mark as a player. “I give glory to God,” says Garza. “This is an honor and to have played on this Sharyland HS basketball team has been special.” After the game, Sharyland HS Athletic Coordinator, Ron Adame and athletic director, Richard Thompson recognized Garza for her accomplishments and Whitaker presented the senior with a basketball showing her career mark. “Maddie is a true athlete and academic student. She is an example of what a student/athlete is all about,” says Adame. The 31-5A District Champions, Sharyland HS Lady Rattlers will now play 30-5A Victoria West this Friday in the area championships.

Sharyland High School Girls Set On Returning to the UIL State Championships in April (McAllen, Texas)-It’s called the “windy-month” and it only matters when high school golfers hit the courses to compete. And, it can be dreadful too. “These winds in the Rio Grande Valley are horrible,” says McAllen Memorial HS head coach Celso Goznales. “It can make you or break you.” The district golf championships are set to begin on April 4th

and 5th at area golf courses with regional tournaments to be held in San Antonio, Texas. The University Interscholastic League State Championships will be played in Austin, Texas on April 25-29th for Class 1A through 6A. Valley View Hopes To Get Back To UIL Championships Brownsville Porter, Sharyland, Teams To Beat

(Pharr, Texas)-Valley View High School (14-1-1) head soccer coach Damian Magallan takes a lot of pride in his job. As a matter of fact, he is very passionate about this game of soccer. “I love this game,” says Magallan. “Hopefully, this will be the year that we get back to the state championship game.” Last year, the Tigers were

eliminated from the first round of 2015 State 5A Bi-District Championships, losing to Brownsville Pace 2-0 after advancing to the finals in 2014 at Georgetown. The Tigers lost 2-1 to Northwest Bryon Nelson HS. It was the same result in 2013 when the Tigers lost again at the state tournament in the semifinals to El Paso Del Valle 1-0. Magallan says that the road begins right here in the Rio Grande Valley. “We will have another 5A State Champion from

the Valley,” says Magallan. Just a few miles away, PSJA Southwest almost accomplished that feat in 2015, before losing to Georgetown East View 4-2 in the 5A Quarterfinals. So far, the Tigers have made quite an impression in tournament play. At the Houston Cy-Fair Showcase, the Tigers won the tournament with wins over Conroe (5-3), Houston Northbrook (4-2), before tying Cypress-Springs 1-1. At the Brenham 5A Select Cup, the Tigers roared once again with wins over Creekview (3-2), Whitehouse (2-0), PSJA Southwest (2-1), Creekview (3-1). In the 6A-5A Champion of Champions match, Valley View went on to win 2-0 over Cy-Ranch. “It’s just the beginning and our District 31-5A will be tough to win,” says Magallan. “It will be exciting.”

Dabbed!

Ink Intents Rio Grande Valley Players

(McAllen, Texas)-Dabbed! “I’m going to win the Heisman one day,” Trevor Speights from McAllen Memorial High School told a crowd of more than 1,000 fans and friends, who attended his signing with Stanford University on February 8th. After his signing, Speights looked at his Mom and Dad and together, they “dabbed”. A celebration ritual first set by NFL Carolina Panther quarterback, Cam Newton. “Someday, I want to play in the NFL too,” Speights told HSSM. Going to college to play sports was just a dream for McAllen Memorial High School running back, Trevor Speights. The 4th all-time running back in Texas (9,868 yards rushing) will now continue his career at the Division I level with Hesiman runner-up and sophomore running back-

teammate, Christian McCaffrey (2,065 rushing yards/645 yards rec) for the Stanford Cardinals (12-2). Speights led the Mustangs to a spectacular 11-1 season before bowing out in a 49-35 loss to Harlingen in the second-round of the playoffs. The 5”-11”, 205-pounder rushed 233 times for 3,195 yards, averaging 266.3 yards per game and 14 yards per carry, and producing 50 touchdowns. Including three pass-reception scores, he wound up with 120 TDs and 10,898 all-purpose yards. Speights was named 2015 High School Sports Magazine’s Player of the Year and Ford Built Tough in Texas 6A Player of the Year. On Tuesday, February 8th his dream became a reality as Speights was surrounded by his head football coach Bill Littleton and his parents. “This means a lot to me and my family,” says Speights. Like Speights, defensive back Mario Valdez from San Benito HS was in awe as his family and coaches surrounded him as he signed his letter of intent to play football for Hardin-Simmons University. “I owe this to Coach Dan Gomez, who kept encouraging me to work hard everyday.” Valdez will now attend Hardin-Simmons University to play football this fall. Teammate, Joseph Partida also signed his national letter of intent to play football for Texas A&M Kingsville. With a huge smile, Partida said that he was “proud” and is looking forward to playing football. “This is where Robert Garza started his dream to play in the NFL. This is where I begin mine,” said Partida. The San Benito Greyhounds won backto-back District 32-6A titles and advanced to the State 6A Regional Championships in football this past season before losing to Shertz-Clemens. More than 2,000 athletes signed their letters of intents to play sports at the collegiate level throughout the nation. In the Rio Grande Valley? Only eight athletes signed their

intents on February 4th. In Donna, offensive linemen Troy Billman (6’3” 270lbs) lifted his mother as it was made official that he will be playing football for Texas A&M Kingsville this fall. “My parents have done so much me and the coaches here at Donna HS have been supported,” adds Billman. The senior stoodout like a sore-thumb throughout the season as he towered most opposing linemen from District 32-5A. The Redskins won the title in 2015. Head coach Ramiro Leal Jr. praised Billman for his efforts. “He’s a special young man,” said Leal. “We are going to miss him, but its athletes like Billman that make Donna High School proud.” Billman was named to the High School Sports Magazine’s first team offense and he also receieved numerous of other awards. At McAllen Memorial HS, quarterback Johnathon Sanchez, (6’7”, 210lbs) waited patiently in the shadows of his teammate, Trevor Speights, who drew most of the attention throughout the season from football college scouts. On February 4th, it was his time to shine. He signed his national letter of intent to play football for the Rice

Owls from the Confernce USA (5-7 overall). Sanchez also drew national attention from Navy, amongst other schools. “This is really neat. The Owls want me to play tight-end and now, they have me on this nutritional diet to gain weight,” says Sanchez.

“I will be red-shirted and I will begin football in 2017. What I like about Rice is their engineering program. I also felt comfortable here in the Houston-area too.” In the summer, senior Josh McGowen came to the Rio Grande Valley after his Dad retired from the armed services. His father wanted to come back home to his grass roots and brought his family with him. The moved paid off too. Josh was named the starting running back for the McAllen Bulldogs and helped lead his team to a Class 6A BiDistrict playoff appearance. He finished the season with 1,892 yards rushing and a second place finish in 30-6A. The

senior running back is also a hurdler and will be running track this Spring with hopes of making it to the University Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships on May 12-14th at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas-Austin. Another McAllen High School signee was Cody Rodriguez, a linebacker on defense. “I never would have imagined I would be playing college football,” said Rodriguez. He will attend Texas A&MKingsville this fall and play for the Javelinas. “I am extremely proud of all these athletes,” says Donna ISD Superintendent, Castillo.

It’s Time for

Track & Field Teams Kickoff Season with Meets

(Mission, Texas)-Sharyland Pioneer HS Johnny Howell took one look down the field and then launched his discus 146’03” feet to finish third in his first event of the season at the Steve Stark Relays held at Richard Thompson Stadium on Friday, February 12th. It was the start of the new track and field season for Texas as many teams throughout the state competed in track and field meets. Howell, like many athletes will be striving to qualify for the University Interscholastic League’s 2016 Track and Field Championships to be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on May 12-14, 2016. Pioneer High School, only in its second season of competition, dominated the Stark Relays by finishing first overall in the Boys Standinsg with 108 points followed by La Joya Palmview 90 points, and Weslaco High School came in third place overall with 76 points. In the girls team standing, the La Joya Palmview Lady Lobos showed that they will be a track and field team to contend with as they racked up 160 points with Sharyland Pioneer finishing in second place with 93. Sharyland Pioneer and Palmview boys teams both traded running spots as the Lobos won the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:30.86 finish but, Pioneer would win the 4x200-meter relay race. The Weslaco Panthers showed plenty of promise with wins in the Pole Vault by Jon Zapata (13’06”) and the long jump won by Alexander Lara (22’ 01.50”) followed by Sergio Murillo winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.17 seconds. McAllen HS newcomer, Josh McGowen won the 110-meter hurdles (14.26) and 300-meter hurdles (38.40). He is favored to win the District 30-6A title. At the PSJA North Winter Relays on Saturday, February 13th, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln hurdler, Carlos Serna won both the 100-meters and 300-meters followed by three more Huskie wins in the 400m relay, 800 meter relay, and 1600m relays. This could make things interesting in District 30-6A as both Juarez-Lincoln, Palmview, and McAllen all compete in the same districts. PSJA Memorial QB Mike Gonzalez watched his team not make the playoffs in 2015 but, in track and field, Gonzalez could be headed to the State 5A meet in the Shot Put and Discus events. At 270.0lbs and standing almost 6’1”, Gonzalez won the shot put with a toss of 49’01” and he also won the discus with a throw of 156’02” feet. In girls action, the Weslaco Lady Panthers will be favored to win the 31-6A title as they won seven events on Saturday afternoon. INTERVIEW

Mission HS Athletic Coordinator & Football Coach Koy Detmer Led Mission Eagles to UIL State-Semifinals as a QB and then played for Colorado; gets Drafted by NFL Eagles. Now, Detmer is back home to begin his new life as a head football coach in his hometown. Koy talks about his journey...and his dream.

(Q) Has Tom Landry Stadium changed since you last played here? “Its changed quite a bit with the new turf as it was grass field before that. They moved the Eagle to the other side of the field along with the new scoreboard. The new field house and weight room and the new facility is amazing....

(Q) Do you still remember playing Houston Aldine in the UIL 5A State Semifinals in 1990?

(HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

(pauses) “It was a great experience, its something I try to express to these kids here and people coming back that this experience coming back and coaching here is awesome. The fan support from the Valley playing at the Astrodome...

32

playing Houston Aldine... with the whole Valley? It set a record for the highest attendence in the Astrodome for a high school playoff game at that time...

(Q) You played backup QB for Colorado for three seasons and had a big senior year. How much patience does it take? “It took pateince. During my freshman year, our starter got injured earlier in the year and so that got me back into the lineup where I led the team to a couple victories. That was alot of fun getting starts that year and then I got redshirted and then came back my sophomore year after getting redshirtted, we had a great team and went 11-1 and had alot of great players and finished ranked No.3 in the nation...

High School Sports Magazine/February 26, 2016

(Q) In 1997, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted you in the 7th round and you managed to stay with the same team in your career. How? Its kind of a rare thing to stay with one team all the way through primarily, someone with a backup role. Usually, when you’re in the backup role, you bounce around teams. My brother ended up playing for five or six teams in that kind of a role. Its one of those things where you try to put things together and we as a team had that chemistry together and we were succesful for a stretch of time...

(Q) After the NFL, you decided to comeback and coach with your Dad (Sonny) at Somerset. Why?

They had the program in place and when I talked to people who get back in coaching, is that you need to get back in it with someone you know. They were able to get me in and find me a spot and get me a teachers certification and so it was great place for me to get started at Somerset.

(Q)

Now, you are home. You are the Mission Eagles head football coach. What does this mean to you? It means alot...the experience I had here as a player, you couldn’t beat it. I look forward for the opportunity to come back and coach in Mission and hopefully, do something to guide these kids in that same direction where maybe, they can enjoy and feel the same experience I have experienced.

New Realignment Changes 31-5A Three Laredo Schools Joins the RGV

(Edinburg, Texas)-Judith Solis, La Villa ISD Superintendent and Edinburg CISD Superintendent, Dr. Rene Gutierrez, both opened the much anticipated sealed box containing the new University Interscholastic League’s Realignments for the 2016-2018 school years. The big surprise? District 315A will now play host to Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Martin, and Laredo Nixon for the next two years. “We did not see this coming,” says Rio Grande City CISD Athletic Director, Rey Ramirez. “I saw this happening two years ago, but not this time.” Grim looks could be seen throughout the room of coaches from District 31-5A. Only one smile came from one team, one coach. Edinburg Vela High School. “Whew! We don’t get to travel on week nights,”says athletic coordinator, Michael Salinas, from Vela HS. Why? The UIL moved the Robert Vela Sabercats from 31-5A to Class 6A with District 31-6A. Now, District 31-6A will be made up of all four Edinburg Schools and all three PSJA Schools. In Cameron County, Weslaco and Weslaco East will be matched with District 32-6A opponents, Harlingen, Harlingen South, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Brownsville Hanna, and Brownsville Rivera. “I saw this happening,” said Weslaco HS head football coach, Tony Villarreal. “Do I like this... well...” Four Brownsville schools will now compete in District 32-5A along with Donna, Donna North, Mercedes, and Edcouch-Elsa. “It’s going to be a very competitive district,” says Donna ISD Athletic Director, Manny Moreno.
