football coach. “I came back to where I started,” said Detmer. “It is the greatest feeling ever.” Many fans will be wondering in 2016 if Detmer can revive a program that has struggled for the past three seasons and maybe, another state semifinal appearance could be waiting for the first-year head coach. “I love this game,” adds Detmer. Like Detmer, McAllen Memorial head football coach Bill Littleton shares the same stories of playing high school football. It’s been 45-years since Littleton last wore his No.11 football jersey from Sanderson High School. A winless, Class 2A school near Del Rio, Texas, until head coach Willie Myers took over the program. It was then, Littleton knew that he wanted to become a head coach someday. “It’s been a long time since I’ve played high school football,” says Littleton. “Boy, did I love playing too. He inspired me.” Today, Littleton will begin his 41st year as a coach, and will begin his 14th season with the Mustangs in District 30-6A. Many head football coaches today, dreamed about coming back and coaching on the sidelines at the high school level. “It’s a game that we love so much,” says Brownsville Hanna High School graduate, Tony Villarreal. After 36-years of coaching on the sidelines, the current Weslaco High School head football coach has led the Panthers to numerous of district titles and playoff appearances, along with his state semifinal appearance while coaching at Port Isabel. Today, he is the winningest Hispanic head football coach in Texas with 192 career wins, but the most memorable moment in his career was coming back home to coach the Brownsville Hanna Eagles. “Coming back to coach at your alma mater is special. I was given that chance in my career and we even won our first district football title.” At Hanna High School, Villarreal was an all-purpose player while, longtime coach, Littleton played defensive back. “Those playing days are still fresh in my mind,” adds Littleton. Other coaches like Port Isabel High School head football coach, Monty Stumbaugh went on to play at the colligiate level. He played at Monterrey Tech back in 1980 while head coach Kevin Brewer from McAllen High School played for the TCU Frogs from 1991-95. Other coaches like Joe Marichalar (Edcouch-Elsa HS) and Abel Gonzalez (Grulla HS) both attended Texas A&I Kingsville and played football. “Those were great moments and experiences,” says Stumbaugh. “I share these moments with our students and I try to help each one understand that education is so important.” If any student/athlete is so grateful to what education really means, athletic director and head football coach, Roger Adame understands how education at the college level can always bring you back home. Adame graduated from Mercedes High School in Marcus Kaufmann

1990, where he starred as a linebacker. Today, he is now coaching his own son, at Mercedes. “It’s special to come back home and see that this community believes in us as coaches,” adds Adame. In the offseason, the Rio Grande City High School Rattlers gave another alumni the same chance of coaching the team he once played for too. Aaron Garcia, a 1980 graduate from Rio Grande City High School will lead his team on the sidelines this season. Every coach that played high school football, at some point in their careers, all will agree that they were inspired by their peers. All will share the same grinding stories of hard-fought practices; all will share their stories of heart-breaking losses; and every coach will also share the glory of winning the big game. “Those Friday Night Lights were special to all of us,” said EdcouchElsa HS head football coach, Joe Marichalar.

(La Villa, Texas)-Freer High School, Three Rivers High School, and La Villa High School all made the playoffs in 2015 but fell short of winning a state title, all losing in the first round of the playoffs. The Freer Buckaroos led by head coach Rhett Bomar, went 2-2 last year in District 16-2A DI and with ten returning starters on offense and nine back on defense, the Buckaroos are favored to win the outright title and they could make another run in 2016. Maybe, take it two more rounds deeper. Two years ago, the Three Rivers HS Bulldogs posted their best season ever since 2004 with a 11-1 overall record. That season earned the Bulldogs a second round appearance too. Last year, the Bulldogs finished 6-5. Head coach Randy Palmer will lead his seven returning starters on offense with hopes of winning the outright district title. At Santa Maria High School, just east of Military Highway, near Progreso High School, head coach Arturo Garcia manned the PA System, turned on the stadium lights, made sure the Jugs were filled with water, and he made sure the concession stands were manned with personnel on game days. It was his job. He was the athletic director, much less, the head coach too. Hopefully, if some of these duties can be passed on to someone else, maybe the Cougars will win more than one game in 2016.

Look for King to have two key receivers to throw to, including 6’3’’ Ethan French and Chris Lauer who have a combined 1,100 receiving yards last season and 17 touchdowns. Defensive tackle Will Wright and DB Aaron Alvarado will be the defensive leaders for the Bulldogs. Rio Hondo HS Coach Rocky James Returning Lettermen: 33/21 Starters Returning: 4/6 2015: 7-3 4A DII Bi-District Finalist/ 4-1 District The Bobcats are familiar in being a

On defense, the Bobcats bring plenty of experience with DE Santiago Mendoza and LB Andy Vasquez. They will be part of the six returning starters and being the leaders on defense.
Port Isabel HS Coach Monty Stumbaugh Returning Lettermen: 16/15 Starters Returning: 5/5 2015: 6-4 4A DII Bi-District Finalist/ 3-2 District Head coach Monty Stumbaugh likes what he sees in 2016. Look for him to be assisted by two other running backs Carlos Orduna and Travis Camacho who both have a combined 700 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns as both play
on defense as linebackers.
Raymondville HS Coach Frank Cantu Returning Lettermen: Starters Returning: 2015: 4-6 4A DII Bi-District Finalist/ 2-3 District This will be a rebuilding year for the Bearkats but they have their junior quarterback returning who was the districts newcomer of the year last season. QB Daniel Gutierrez will be looking to lead his team back to the postseason with the help of Jaylon Grimaldo up front on the line protecting him. Darian Cortez will be back on the defensive side of the ball making big stops for the Bearkat defense. Corpus Christi West Oso Coach Scott Kilgore Returning Lettermen: 27/8 Starters Returning: 9/8 2015: 2-8/ 1-4 District West Oso will be returning numerous
of starters on both sides of the ball. QB Chris Valdez will be dangerous on both air and the ground having 730 passing yards, 825 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Germaine Goss will be playing on both sides of the ball as he is a threat as well having 350 yards receiving and 52 tackles on defense. Progreso HS Coach Tom Salazar Returning Lettermen: 14/8 Starters Returning: 5/9 2015: 1-8/ 0-5 District Although the Red Ants are coming back this season with no wins in district play last season, they will be coming back much more experienced with nine returning starters on defense. Hector De Los Santos and Manuel Flores will be strong on defense as linebackers having over 60 tackles combined last season. Joshua San Roman will be the starting quarterback having Steven Alaniz and Oscar Munoz both at the running backs position. The Red Ants could see a playoff spot in 2016, a first since 1990.

(La Feria, Texas)-Five teams will compete for only four playoff spots in 2016. After last year’s Class 4A Division I Area Championships, the La Feria Lions looks like the favorite to win the District 16-4A DI title again. The real question remains. QB Michael Carrales and RB Alex Ruelas will be the best returning starters on the offensive side and will have a huge line to provide protection including 6’4’’ 295lbs OL Albert King. Expect big things defensively for the Brahmas with DB Devin Arkadie, who has a “eye-like-a-hawk” by intercepting the ball five times last year with the help of Cruz Garza at linebacker having 95 tackles last season. The Brahmas open its District 16-4A DI season at home against Hidalgo on October 7th.
Zapata High School hopes to come back this season and start off strong and finish strong as they finished off weak last season losing four straight. The Hawks have plenty of returning starters back and look to rebound with Carlos Gutierrez at running back and QB Conner Moreno running the Slot-T offense. Gutierrez can run and catch as he did last season with over 800 total yards. The Hawks will be strong again on defense with Kris Hinkle and Mateo Mendoza in the secondary looking to make big tackles.
Only in his second-year, head coach David Duty will be looking for improvement and will be in search of a quarterback. They have a few weapons to throw too, including TE Mark Flores and WR Marco Bella, who are big playmakers when the ball is thrown to them. Look for the defense to be strong in the middle with Andy Hernandez and Issac Aleman at the linebacker position. The Pirates open with Santa Rosa on August 26th followed by non-district games against Valley View (9/2), and Port Isabel Sept. 9th.
In 2015, La Feria HS Brandon Garza (RB/QB) helped lead his Lions to the second round of the Class 4A Division I Areal finals against China Spring losing 42-21. (HSSMIMages/Alec Amador)

Taking One-Step Closer Edcouch-Elsa Returns As Favorite in 32-5A
(Edcouch, Texas)-It was cold. It was harsh. It was wet. It was football in November. It was the University Interscholastic League State 5A Division II Regional Championships. “We play for a state championship title every year,” says fourth-year head football coach Joe Marichalar. The Yellowjackets traveled to San Antonio last November 27th and met 25-5A Cedar Park High School (15-0) at Alamo Stadium. The weather played havoc from the start with temperaures dipping below 30-degrees. “It was cold,” said Marichalar. “There was no advanatage for neither team.” The Timberwolves did what they do best, win at any level. They would defeat the Yellowjackets 42-0 and eventually captured the state title with their win over Lone Star High School 22-6 at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Yellowjackets will be coming back strong and confident after going three-rounds deep losing to eventual state champions Cedar Park. Although weather was a huge factor during that game, sometimes or actually we’ll never know if “La Maquina” would’ve came away with the victory if it was nice and sunny. But, the black and gold will bring back many key players that led them to the postseason last year including QB Marco Aguinaga and WR J.J. Flores on the offensive side. The Yellowjackets edured some tough times last year early on. Players and staff members had to deal with the
loss of one of its players, followed by the loss of their starting quarterback. “We had to step up and overcome adveristy,” says Marichalar. “We came togther.” The Yellowjackets finished their season with a 4-3 District 325A record without Aguinaga in the lineup. Losses to Donna (31-10) and Mercedes (17-14), and the shocking loss to Brownsville Pace (17-14) stung the Yellowjackets. Still, Marichalar watched his team overcome the late
setbacks to go three-rounds deep. As a matter of fact, they were the only 5A team advancing three-rounds with Edinburg Vela. The Yellowjackets beefed up its non-district schedule with games against Los Fresnos (8/26) and Edinburg Vela (9/2). The Yellowjackets will open district play at home against Donna North High School (9/23) followed by Donna High School on September 30th. Six starters return on both sides of the
field. Players to watch are TE Mac Lara (6’2 220lbs), OT Rick Estimbo (6’1 275lbs), LB Joel Cardoza (5’10 205lbs). Expectations? Expect the Yellowjackets to pass and run the ball. Expect the defense to be much improved from 2015. Expect lots of points scored. Brownsville Veterans, Pace, Porter, Lopez Looking For Bids (Brownsville, Texas)-The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers and Lopez Lobos will join District 32-5A after the UIL realigned teams throughout Texas in February. The Chargers and Porter Cowboys both made the playoffs last year and both teams could expect the same results in 2016. Thirty lettermen return for the Chargers with three quarterbacks competing for the No.1 spot on the field. Florida transfer Gustavo Vasquez, along with sophomore AJ Costilla and Isaiah Solis will be looked at by head coach David Cantu. Only two starters return on defense and after giving up 299
points last year, Cantu knows that they will have to improve quickly. At Brownsville Pace, William Deen believes his team will come back with more experience as they return seven starters on defense while Lopez HS head coach Jason Starkey should see some bright spots from transitioning from Class 6A to Class 5A. On the West side of town, Porter made the playoffs under head coach Tom Campos with a 6-5 overall record but he will have to continue to find a way to keep the Cowboys believing that they can compete every Friday night. Porter plays Rivera August 25th.

Can Redskins Defend Title?
(Donna, Texas)-Winning a District 32-5A title last year was priceless. Especially, when eight teams were all vying for the same title and the Redskins went on to finish with a perfect 7-0 record. Head coach Ramiro Leal will begin his fourth season as the head football coach and he knows that winning another district outright title will not come easy. “Winning titles are never easy,” says Leal. So far, making the playoffs has been an easy task for the Redskins and Leal. The Redskins will be after their fourth playoff bid under Leal but with only two returning starters back on offense, Leal knows that his team will have to work extra harder to make the playoffs in 2016. Quarterback Josh Mata will be the projected starter and he will need help from OL Bryan Cardenas, Matt Molina and JJ Vallejo. All three linemen average 285lbs upfront and stand 6’2” on the average height. The Redskins will open their season against Valley View on August 26th at home followed by another home game with PSJA North on September 1st. on September 30th. Leal watched his team outscored their 2015 opponents 407198, including a 63-0 shutout against PSJA. The Bears have since left the district and moved up to Class 6A. The Donna Redskins will be one of three teams favored to win it all in 2016, along side with Edcouch-Elsa High School and Mercedes High School. If the Gods of Football prevail, District 32-5A could end up with three district title holders shared by all three favorites. “It’s going to be a tough district,” says Leal. “Defending the title only means that your opponents will play you harder every Friday night.” Head Coach: Ramiro Leal Jr-4th Season 2014 Record: 8-3, 7-0 District 32-5A Champions Returning Lettermen: 37

Mercedes Could Win It All
Head Coach: 3rd Season Roger Adame Jr Returning Lettermen: 18/15 Starters Returning: 8/7 2015: 7-4 5A DII Bi-District Finalist/ 6-1 District
(Mercedes, Texas)-For the past two seasons, head coach Roger Adame has led the Mercedes Tigers to the UIL State 5A playoffs and has added one district title to his trophy case. Now, in his third season, Adame will be looking to find a way to get past the “one and done” mindset in the playoffs and win an area title instead. The Tigers were a very young team last season after only losing one game in district play against Donna 28-21 and that team had twelve starting sophomores, who are all coming back as juniors. Led by junior 5A All-State LB Roger Adame (139 tackles) and junior QB Zach Gomez, named 32-5A newcomer of the year, threw for over 1,400 yards and 10 Tds last season. With another ten starting juniors added to the mix, Adame is hoping that this experience will knock off Edcouch-Elsa (10/14) and Donna (9/23) when teams collide in district play. The last time the Tigers went two rounds deep in the state playoffs was back in 2009 when they played Port Lavaca-Calhoun and lost 47-39. The Tigers will open against Calallen (8/26), Nikki Rowe (9/2), and Weslaco (9/9) before its showdown with Donna on September 23rd at home. Mercedes HS senior RB Issac Vela led his team to the UIL State 5A Division II Bi-District Championships. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

(Donna, Texas)-Don’t tell new Donna North High School head football coach Matthew Rokovich that his team will not have a chance to make the playoffs in 2016. He will only stare you down. “These players here at Donna North are great and that’s what makes great football teams,” says Rokovich. “Coach Rock” takes over a program that went 1-20 for the past two seasons and with nine starters returning on offense and seven back on defense, Rokovich believes they will be playoff contenders in District 32-5A. He hopes to bring his 32 years of coaching experience to the Chiefs as they have only won three games in their three years of existence. The Chiefs gave up 388 points on defense last year and managed to score just 140 points in ten games. The Chiefs were shutout twice in blowout losses against La Feria (66-0) and PSJA Southwest (40-0). Rokovich will Matthew Rokovich will take as the new Chief at Donna North High School. Nine Teams Ready For
Western Shootout
(Rio Grande City, Texas)- New head coach Aaron Garcia is confident that his Rio Grande City Rattlers football team will be much improved in 2016. He also feels that his junior quarterback, Jason Perez will gel with new offensive coordinator, Paul Reyes. Nine teams must be ready and confident to begin District 31-5A with Laredo Nixon, Laredo Martin, and Laredo Cigarroa all jumping in the mix of the district race along with Mission Veterans, Sharyland, Sharyland Pioneer, Valley View, and Roma. Last year, three teams finished tied for second place with 4-2 records while Edinburg Vela went 6-0 and won the district title. With Vela moving up to Class 6A, that leaves Roma High School as the possible frontrunner for its first district title. Chasing the Gladiators will be Sharyland, Sharyland Pioneer, and Mission Veterans Memorial High School. The Patriots back-up QB Landry Gilpin stepped in late last season and passed for 1,589 yards and he also rushed for another 895 yards and led them to a bi-district win over Donna. Head coach Dave Gilpin knows that he will have to make a game-day decision on whether to start his son Landry, or bring back Diego Hernandez. The 6’2 quarterback was off to his best season ever until an injury sidelined him after six games. He had already passed for more than 1,700 yards and 19 TDs. Don’t be surprised if the Patriots use both players under center. If there is one team that will be much improved, that team will be the Rattlers. The Rattlers missed the playoffs with district losses to Roma (19-14), Edinburg Vela (27-26), and Mission Veterans (14-3). HSSM previews District 31-5A... Jason Perez Rio Grande City H.S.

Senior Diego Hernandez (6’2) will be back at the quarterback position after suffering a season-ending injury last year but he’ll be ready for the first snap of the 2016 season. Hernandez will have a duo threat of receivers which includes WR Roman De Leon and WR Jacob Guerrero, who both combined for 78 catches and over 1,000 yards receiving. Playoff Appearances: 10-1982, 83, 84, 85, 98, 99, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013 (Rio Grande City, Tx)-It could be the start of a great season for the Rio Grande City Rattlers football team. Sharyland, Pioneer Teams Looking For Playoff Bids (Mission, Texas)-The Sharyland Rattlers made the playoffs in 2015, the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks missed the playoffs in 2015. The Rattlers won the Class 5A Division II Bi-District title with their win over Mercedes, while the Diamondbacks were still mumbling over their four game losing streak at the end of the season. The Sharyland Rattlers shared second place with two other teams and the Diamondbacks slipped to fifth place overall to end their playoff hopes. That was all the drama which took place in 2015. Season done. Season over. The Diamondbacks reloaded and head coach Jason Wheeler will figure out a way to not repeat what happened towards the end of the season. The Diamondbacks will still bring some of those negative vibes from last year: a four-game

losing streak. With thirty lettermen returning along with seven starters on offense and six on defense, the Diamondbacks will be experienced on both sides of the ball. Wheeler watched his team take off to a perfect 6-0 start, including two district wins over Valley View and Rio Grande City. Losses to Mission Veterans (21-14), Sharyland (18-10), and Roma (21-10) ended the Diamondbacks first-ever playoff bid. On the Southside of FM 495, the Sharyland Rattlers dealt with a shocking 48-47 loss to Edinburg Vela on September 25th and then lost to Roma for the first time in school history 18-10. Head coach Ron Adame will have his team ready despite returning only four starters on offense. The biggest void for the Rattlers will be at quarterback. No names have

surfaced at the No.1 position and hopefully, by August 26th, when they host Weslaco East, a new quarterback will be named. Both Sharyland teams will endure the travel time to Laredo. The University Interscholastic League realigned teams across the state of Texas and shocked District 31-5A by making it a nine-team district, adding Laredo Martin, Laredo Nixon, and Laredo Cigarroa to the mix. “We were shocked, says Adame. Worst, the Rattlers will now play all three Laredo teams
on the road. The Diamondbacks will travel to play district games at Laredo Nixon (9/23) and Laredo Martin (10/28). The Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks showed signs of wealth after qualifying for the Adidas 7-on-7 Football Championships held at College Station this past season. Outlook? Sharyland brings plenty of tradition and they will find ways to win, while Pioneer will be looking for tools to succeed in 2016.

Former NFL Quarterback Takes Over Mission Eagles
(Mission, Texas)-He’s the son of a former head football coach. He’s the brother of a Heisman Trophy winner. He played for the Philadelphia Eagle’s ten years. And now, he’s back where he first started playing high school football. Koy Detmer takes over the Mission Eagles football team after Mario Pena stepped down after the 2015 season. Detmer played at Mission High School and led the Eagles to the 5A playoffs in 1990 and 1991. The 1990 team lost in the semifinals against eventual state champion Aldine Mustangs (54-21). Aldine went on to win the state title that season. In his early days, his father Sonny, coached the Mission Eagles and with Detmer at quarterback, Mission High was known as probably, one of the first teams to established a nuclear passing attack. Detmer set a state record with 4,829 passing yards for a season in 1990. Detmer accepted a scholasrhip to play for the Colorado Buffaloes and then was drafted by the NFL Philadelphia Eagles. He spent most of his career as a backup to quarterback Donovan McNabb and as the placekick holder for David Akers. Now, Detmer hopes to bring all of his playing experience back to the school he once played for and get their passing attack flowing once again. Returning for the Eagles are thirty-six lettermen with five starters on offense and seven back on defense from a team that finished 2-4 in District 30-6A. The Eagles will open its season against PSJA North on August 26th at Tom Landry Stadium followed by a city-title match-up against Mission Veterans Memorial on September 2nd. An expected sellout crowd should fill Landry Stadium. Detmer will bring in the West-Coast style offense to Mission. This style of offense provides more flewibilty for quarterbacks to pick and choose who they want to throw too at any moment. “I am proud to be back in Mission and I am looking forward to serving this community,” says Detmer. The Eagles finished tied for fourth place last season.

La Joya ISD Football Programs Teams To Beat in 2016
(La Joya, Texas)-Forget about last year’s 63-13 loss to 29-6A Laredo United South in the State 6A Division II Bi-District Championships, the La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies have set their standards even higher this season. They want another playoff season and they also want to take it a step further too. On the other side of this dry-mesquite land, La Joya Palmview High school surprised everyone in District 30-6A by making the playoffs in 2015 before losing to Del Rio 58-30. What’s strange is that four teams finished tied for fourth place with identical records of 2-4 in District 30-6A play, with the Lobos taking the tie-breaker to make the playoffs. La Joya was right in the mix at 2-4, but three straight losses to Mission (35-14), Nikki Rowe (14-7), and Juarez-Lincoln (20-7) ended their playoff bid. So close, oh so close. Here’s a preview of what to expect from all three La Joya schools. La Joya Juarez Lincoln Head Coach: 2nd year Tomas Garcia Returning Lettermen: 25/23 Starters Returning: 5/5 2015: 4-7 6A Bi-District Finalist/ 3-3 District La Joya Juarez-Lincoln is coming into the 2016 season with lots of confidence after making the playoffs in 2015 for the first time in school history.
The Huskies will be needing to make big changes at the quarterback position with Obed Fernandez graduating last year. Andrew Rodriguez will be the new quarterback for the Huskies switching positions from cornerback last year. The Huskies offense will be led by junior running back Adonis Barillas and WR CJ Flores, who will help ease the role of their new quarterback. The Huskies will be strong again on defense led by senior DE Aguilar.

La Joya Coyotes Head Coach: Ruben Farias Returning Lettermen: 11/15 Starters Returning: 5/6 2015: 3-7/ 2-4 District
La Joya Palmview’s second-year head coach Magarito Requenez has led the Lobos to back to back playoff appearances since 2014. This year, the Lobos will have to replace nine starters on offense and seven starters on defense. Three quarterbacks will be competing for the starting role. Oscar Mendoza, Andrew Puente, and Jonathan Zeiske are the three options for the starting role under center. On defense, the Lobos will have to find a way to not give up 382 points to opposing teams. Returning are DB Mark Salinas, CB Eloy Cantu, and DE Rolando Andrade. The Lobos open at Roma HS on August 26th and will play host to Edinburg Economedes (9/2) and Edinburg (9/9) at La Joya Stadium. The Lobos will end their non-district schedule against Pace on September 16th before opening district play against defending champions, McAllen Memorial on September 23rd at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The La Joya Coyotes are ready to start fresh with a new head coach taking over for the Coyotes. New Head Coach Ruben Farias, who was the receivers coach and special teams coordinator for the past three years, hopes to give the Coyotes a start of a winning era with an experienced defense led by ILB Rey Hernandez and DB Leo Garza, who was an honorable mention all-district selection a year ago. The Coyotes will have two options for the quarterback role with Jose Delgado and Irving Garcia (6’4, 200lbs) competing for the starting role. TE Edwin Castillo will be the big threat for the Coyotes on the offensive side

(McAllen, Tx)-The McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors will begin a new era with first-year head coach, Robert Flores. The long-time assistant finally, was given the opportunity to become a head football coach for the first time in his career. “This is a great opportunity,” says Flores. “I’m humbled.” Flores will try to get the Warriors back on the winning track after going 46-45 since 2008. The Warriors have made the playoffs twice, since then. Still, Flores remains optimistic about his football program and adds, “the team is ready and motivated”. The Warriors will begin its non-district schedule against four teams with a combined record of 22-31 from 2015. Hopefully, the Warriors will get off to a strong start against Edinburg on August 26th at home followed by a trip to Mercedes on September 2nd and Brownsville Porter on September
9th. The Warriors will continue their third straight road trip against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on September 23rd and end their nondistrict schedule on the road at Rio Grande City against Grulla High School on September 29th. Despite going 3-6 overall in 2015, the Warriors could have been better had they defeated Edcouch-Elsa (21-14), Mercedes (26-20 2OT), and McAllen (4340). Those three losses could have been wins and the Warriors would have made the playoffs with a 6-3 record. If the Warriors expect to make a playoff run, they will have to improve on defense. District game losses against McAllen Memorial (70-21), La Joya Palmview (55-31), McAllen (43-40), and Mission (28-18), were blowouts on defense. “We have to get better on defense,” says Flores. Seven starters return from that 2015 roster and with a new defensive coordinator in the line-up, the Warriors could find themselves in the mix of a possible district title this year. Players to watch are defensive end Nate Hernandez and Frank Delgado at linebacker. Both players bring plenty of experience.

Two-Time Defending Champs
Looking to Stay Perfect (McAllen, Texas)-The McAllen Memorial Mustangs are perfect. They have been perfect for the past two years in District 30-6A with 12-straight district wins and two straight district titles under head coach Bill Littleton. Will the Mustangs continue to keep their undefeated record of 12-0 in district play perfect? Littleton enters his 14th year at McAllen Memorial with three UIL State 5A & 6A Regional appearances on his record and he feels that this year will be a rebuilding season. Last year, the Mustangs went 10-0 for the year, behind the running of Trevor Speights, who finished No.4 on the all-time rushing list in Texas. He now attends Stanford University. “He will be tough to replace,” says Littleton. The Mustangs enjoyed rushing for 5,308 yards in 2015, averaging 442.0 ypg in twelve games. Behind
Jacob Bagstad LB Junior
their running game, the Mustangs also enjoyed the passing of quarterback Jonathon Sanchez (6’7”), who added another 1,114 yards in the air with 15 touchdowns. He now attends Rice University and is set to play tightend for the Owls. “Those two will be hard to replace,” says Littleton. In the off season, to make things more challenging, Littleton watched his longtime offensive coordinator, Marcus Kaufmann resign to take up his first head coaching job with PSJA North in District 31-6A and on defense, the Mustangs lost senior DT Ricardo Miner (6’2, 285lbs), who transferred to St. Joe Catholic School in Brownsville. The new-look Mustangs will feature probably one of the best running backs to replace Speights. His name is JoJo Williams (5’11 185lbs). He’s fast and quick. He’s only a junior. At quarter-
back, that spot remains up in the air with two candidates competing for the open position. Junior back-up Angel Almaguer (5’6”) will be challenged by sophomore Sean Skaugen (6’1 180lbs). Both players will see action as the season begins with their first game at home on August 25th against Sharyland Pioneer at Fred Pharmacy Field in McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium. The Mustangs will be tested early with non-district games with Weslaco East (9/2), San Benito (9/9), and Los Fresnos (9/16). All three made the playoffs in Class 6A last year with the Greyhounds advancing three rounds. All three teams are from 32-6A and are expected to be playoff contenders. The biggest advantage for the Mustangs will be home field advantage. They will play six homes games at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium with a new million-dollar scoreboard

that could give the Mustangs an edge on Friday nights. “It’s a big scoreboard,” says Littleton. Other players to watch will be strong-safety, senior Joey Delgado; MLB Jaryd Lara, and ILB Jacob Bagstad. The Mustangs allowed 277 points scored in 12 games. Only Harlingen scored the most points against the Mustangs (49-35) in the Class 6A Region IV Area Championships last season. The last time the Mustangs missed the playoffs was back in 2009 with a 6-4 overall record and since then, the Mustangs have won three district titles (2011, 2014, 2015) with an overall record of 53-18. The Mustangs will begin their District 30-6A season against La Joya Palmview on September 23rd at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. Can the Mustangs make a three-peat?

(Pharr, Tx)-Many PSJA Bear football fans will remember the 1962 and 1963 football seasons. The Bears made two State 3A Championship game appearances. In 1962, the Bears lost to Dumas HS 14-3 and they would return again, before losing to Corsicana High School 7-0 the following season. The PSJA Bears struggled last season under head coach Steve Marroquin by ending their year at 1-9 in Class 5A. Now, the Bears move up to Class 6A. Will they be better? Head coach Marroquin thinks they will be much improved. Eight returning starters on the offensive side of the ball return with Joachim Almaguer, who has several roles on offense, helping the Bears along with RB Marc Castillo and sophomore QB Trey Guajardo, who played some varsity games as a freshman. (Edinburg, Tx)-The Edinburg Vela High School Sabercats have been one of the top football programs since 2012 despite go- ing 0-10 in their first year of UIL Football. Since then, they have gone 5-5, 10-2, and 12-1 over the past four years, including three-rounds deep last year before losing to Austin Vandegrift 49-39. Head coach Michael Salinas will see his team play in Class 6A, moving up from Class 5A. Many will say that “Class 5A is weaker than Class 6A” but, Salinas will tell fans “not true”. Leading the Sabercats will be senior running back, Robert Guerra (1,891 yards rushing 32 TDs) who will bring plenty of experience on offense. The problem on offense will be at the quarterback position. Fabian Pedraza graduated in May and with no one to fill in, the Sabercats will scramble, finding a quarterback who will take over duties. The Sabercats will open its season against Victoria East on August 26th on the road and will travel to Edcouch-Elsa on September 2nd for a great match-up and will end the non-district schedule at home against Brownsville Veterans Memorial on September 9th.

This 2016 team will be very similar to the 2013 team that advanced to the 5A Regional finals as six starters on offense and eight starters on defense will come back this coming year for the Cougars. Other players to watch are SS Adrian Ortiz, OL Rick Cerda, and WR Roel De Leon. Head coach Rene Saenz enters his third season after ending the 2015 campaign at 3-7 overall.

Jaguars head coach Gabe Pena and his team are looking forward to 2016 after making the playoff last season. They are hungry on both sides of the ball as they have an experienced defense led by three outstanding players DE Osvaldo Gomez, DB Pete Rodriguez, and LB Darren Earhart. Economedes will continue to run its spread offense with Rbs Mike Medellin and Allen Arredondo in the back field. Quarterback Roger Barrientos will have to step up to lead his offense with Bonefacio Rios at wide-receiver. Edinburg High School hired J.J. Leija as the new head coach for the Bobcats after going 1-9 last season. Lejia was the defensive coordinator for the La Joya Palmview Lobos last year and he hopes to bring a winning tradition back to the Bobcats, as he is an alumni. The Bobcats had it rough last year only winning one game and will come back on both sides inexperienced. Players to watch are QB Nathan Marez, WR Jerry Zea, DE Edgar Arevalo, will need to help out their Bobcats as they will be the seniors motivating their team for a playoff run. The Edinburg North Cougars are favored to contend for the district title with three-year starter Christian Espinoza at quarterback. He passed for over 1,600

Panthers Opens Season With State 5A DI Champions, George Ranch
(Weslaco, Texas)-Head coach Tony Villarreal scrambled to find non-district games after the University Interscholastic League announced the new realignments for 2016-18 back in February 2016. “It was a scramble,” says Villarreal. “Teams that agreed to play us in non-district, dropped us at the last minute.” For the Weslaco Panther fans, it would be a great thing as Villarreal managed to secure non-district games with defending State 5A Division I champions, 23-6A George Ranch High School, San Antonio Marshall, and Mercedes High School. “We will play, probably, our toughest non-district schedule yet,” adds Villarreal. The Weslaco Panthers will play host to the State Champions Michael Ochoa Weslaco Panthers 6’4 235lbs TE/DE (HSSMImages/Special)
at Bobby Lackey Stadium on Saturday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m. “Fans from the Rio Grande Valley will get a chance to see two teams play on the weekend,” says Villarreal. The Panthers will be loaded with players on offense. The front line will feature OT Brandon Perez (6’5” 365lbs), OT Richard Carmona (6’5” 300lbs), and TE Michael Ochoa (6’4, 235lbs). The two-time defending 31-6A champions will also move to District 32-6A in 2016, so playing a tough non-district schedule just made perfect sense for the Panthers. “Playing tough teams prepares our players when district starts,” said Villarreal. The George Ranch Longhorns have posted an impressive 42-3 record since 2013 under head coach Ricky Tullos. The Longhorns return starting quarterback Antonio Jackson (6’0 170lbs), WR Quintin Morris (6’3” 200lbs), and RB Alex Fontenot (6’0 190lbs). (San Benito, Texas)-One San Benito fan said it best, “if wearing those dark sunglasses wins, then keep them on.” For the past two seasons, head coach Dan Gomez has won two straight District 32-6A titles, along with a Class 6A Region IV finals appearance against Shertz-Clemens in 2015. The Greyhounds graduated every player on the offensive side of the ball in the off season except for one player; Julio Pecina (6’1 235lbs), who returns as their lone-offensive lineman. Teamming up with Pecina will be WR Rene Garcia (6’2 190lbs), and RB Maceino Morales. Both newcomers will need to be the new leaders of the team if they expect to have another winning season. The Greyhounds travel to Laredo United on August 25th to take on the 29-6A Longhorns followed by non-district games against San Antonio east Central (9/2) and at McAllen Memorial (9/9).

(Weslaco, Texas)-The Weslaco East Wildcats will be looking for their fifth-straight playoff appearance under head coach, Michael Burget in 2016. The Wildcats will open their season on the road with non-district games against Sharyland (August 26th) and McAllen Memorial (September 2nd). The Wildcats will feature junior quarterback, Richard Lefevre (6’4 260lbs) along with juniors, TE Paulino Arrevalo (6’1 195lbs), and DE Gerald Garza (6’2” 220lbs). Since 2012, the Wildcats have competed in three different conferences, beginning with District 32-4A followed by District 31-5A, 31-6A, and now, District 32-6A. The Wildcats have won district titles in 32-4A and 31-5A , but Burget has yet to win a title as a head coach. Something, that he has been so close to winning. Under Burget, he has led the Wildcats to the State 6A Regional finals back in 2014 with a bi-district title in 2015. Burget knows that his team must work even harder if they expect to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season in a row. Fifth Straight Playoff Season? The Weslaco East Wildcats lost to 29-6A Del Rio HS last year in the 6A DII Area Championships 33-21. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

The Harlingen Cardinals will open District 32-6A against Harlingen South on September 23rd followed by Brownsville Rivera (Oct 1st) and Weslaco at home on October 7th. The Harlingen Cardinals shared the title with Los Fresnos and San Benito HS in 2015 and Gomez would like to win it outright. With Weslaco, Weslaco East both moving into the district with the new realignments, 32-6A could prove to be the toughest district in South Texas.

Winless Raiders Looking For Answers
Hawks Get New Eagles Welcome Head Coach from Champs New Coach for 2016
(Brownsville, Tx)-Do not remind Brownsville Rivera Raiders head football coach, Tom Chavez about his 0-10 season in 2015. It’s something that most coaches would like to forget. For motivation, the Raiders would really like to think about 2014 season and their third round State 5A Division II Regional finals appearance. That was the year that the Raiders went 0-5 to start the season and then, reeled off eight wins in a row before falling to San Antonio Brandeis 21-7. The Raiders went winless last year and will be needing something positive to get back to winning. Two quarterbacks will be competing for the top spot. Oscar Gonzalez (5’9 175lbs) and Nicolas Blanco (6’0 165lbs) will both be vying to run the “I” formation with two running backs in the back field. RBs Joel Guzman (5’9 180lbs) and Jesus Munoz (5’7 170lbs) will see action as they lead the Raiders against Brownsville Porter on August 25th at Sams Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Will the losing streak end?
(Harlingen, Tx)-The Harlingen South Hawks went out and hired former offensive coordinator Brian Ricci, who led the Houston-area, George Ranch High School Longhorns to a State 5A Division I Championship in 2015. Ricci will bring his offensive play book to the South Hawks, hoping to give them confidence in building back a winning tradition. The Hawks return half of their starters on both sides of the ball. The defense will consist of juniors returning from last year’s 3-6 season with DE Brandon Bennett standing at 6’3’’ 220 lbs and LB Zach Fayyad at 6’1’’ 220lbs. On offense, OL Sky Tatum and Abel Villarreal (6’2 280lbs) will help the Hawks up front on the offensive side. Ricci is bringing high expectations to the Hawks and hopes to make a powerhouse out of them. The McAllen HS Bulldogs will travel to meet the Hawks on August 26th at 7:00 p.m. in Ricci’s first season opener in the Rio Grande Valley at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.
(Brownsville, Tx)- “Goodbye” to longtime head coach, Rene Medrano and “Welcome Back” former head football coach Mark Guess. If anyone is guessing what the Eagles could do in 2016, the best guess would be, playoffs? On defense, seven starters including SS Ernesto Benavides, who plays both sides of the ball, including quarterback will be the player to watch. All-District selections DT Nathan Silva and ILB Justin McManus will help assist Benavides, who have a combined 120 tackles last season. WR Joe Cavazos will be the go-to-guy on offense who caught 44 passes last year for seven touchdowns and will be assisted by Jaime Gonzalez. He is an all-purpose player for the Eagles. Hanna is a young team and will be needing to mature quickly on the field to make the postseason. The Eagles opens its non-district season at Edinburg Economedes on August 25th followed by Brownsville Porter (9/3) and Mission (9/9). Will the Eagles fly to a quick 3-0 start?

The Los Fresnos Falcons will begin their season with eight teams all vying for a District 32-6A title.
