NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

“The job is what you do when you are told what to do. The job is showing up at the factory, following instructions, meeting spec, and being managed. Someone can always do your job a little better or faster or cheaper than you can. The job might be difficult, it might require skill, but it’s a job. Your art is what you do when no one can tell you exactly how to do it. Your art is the act of taking personal responsibility, challenging the status quo, and changing people. I call the process of doing your art ‘the work.’ It’s possible to have a job and do the work, too… The job is not the work.” – Seth Godin, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? Our mission is to connect and build a bridge between artists and art lovers by providing and presenting a high quality source of visual art and design through our book, website, magazine and other publications. We are dedicated to bringing happiness and recognition to the artists and joy, beauty and satisfaction to the art lovers let them be collectors, buyers, galleries, curators or others taking pleasure in art and design. This idea was embraced by 155 artists from 25 countries all over the world and this is why we believe that Hidden Treasure Art Magazine Yearbook has so much to offer both to the Artist and to the Readers.

www.medusa-arts.com Reflection of Empire State Building oil on canvas 11x14 inches 2013

Born in Uzhorod, Ukraine in 1960, Joseph Coban moved with his family to Czechoslovakia in 1972. Then, in 1999 he moved to Ottawa with his own family. As a graduate of three colleges in the Czech Republic, he studied art history, technology and design. Joseph updated his education in 2002 at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Ottawa. After years of working for companies in different fields, Joseph decided to try working on his own and is now working on many projects and commissions, which involve a variety of aspects to create artworks. Over the years his painting style and techniques have developed and broadened. Joseph’s favorite style is realism and portraiture, as well as that of old masters’ paintings as they have stories and hidden messages to tell. From one day to the next, Joseph is able to switch to completely different subjects and styles. He says, “Life would be very boring if one does only one thing over again and again”.

NaomiSzabo

www.naomiszabo.com „I wanted to break the grey with my colours.” Experimenting with different materials, portraying colours in 3D, trying out different substances as surfaces are all parts of her genuine artistic view. ”I am constantly looking for the harmony of the composition, shape and colour should synchronise on a novel way. I often sacrifice figures by painting only parts of them, so that composition can be even more harmonious.” She often divides her paintings: one picture is a compound of two or more pieces. Finally the work is put together into the whole from the missing parts of the mosaics. For many years she was painting on wood to use its raw surface, as the most suitable medium for her paintings. On her latest paintings she combines the canvas with wood and the two media with different material properties will finally fit together organically. The body as a medium of expression and a complex symbol, has remained a subject of her fans. She is preparing her individual unanimous faceless body images by this investigation.

www.francescosandrelli.it La Marcia oil on canvas 160x220 cm 2010 Francesco Sandrelli is a self-taught artist from Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany. He had art exhibitions in France, Canada, UK and the United States. Although he had a keen interest in drawing since early childhood, he began to paint in the eighties, attending a private school in Florence. After four years spent in school, he felt exhausted and went to hospital for art therapy in painting. From 1994, he paints again. His works during this period reflect a grande love for his family. For a while he paints large canvases, especially in remembrance of childhood memories, sensations and dreams: his virtual storytelling mixes fairytales with inner visions, combining imperfection with sharpness and abstraction with figurative. Sometimes feeling everything farce around, Francesco is striving to find sense in turmoil through painting.

I have always been interested in art, spending hours drawing since early childhood. I went to art college, but soon realized that the most important thing for me was to be able to develop my individual style, not focus on learning the specific things taught there. I work in oil or acrylic on canvas, and am inspired by the world around me. I create landscapes which sometimes verge on abstraction. I am continually searching for perfection, not worrying about particular subjects but rather on composing something that is ‘right’ in an inexplicable sense.

In the early 2000’s, after receiving a BFA in Drawing from ACAD, Jeff Tallon lived throughout Canada, Europe and Asia. These experiences inform the global yet local nature of his work and question nationalism, truth, identity, commerce, consumerism and communication. Since 2009, Tallon has been synthesizing painting and technology. Some of his paintings include QR Codes, which allow viewers to capture content using a hand-held device. Tallon’s initial interactive paintings sent text messages to participants creating a sense of faux-intimacy. Subsequently, the breadth of his work has grown to unite photography, oil paint, text, audio/video and the Internet.

This abstract series explodes across the canvas thriving upon new and illuminating paints. By combining layers of modern paints, such as interference, pearl, and chrome, with more traditional colours I’ve managed to create a revolutionary concept of introspective depth. This gives an unprecedented element of movement and change that cannot be captured on film. The luminous pigments and reflections in the paint cause it to glow and shift, engaging the recipient with extraordinary patterns that transform with light and perspective.

Geometric and mathematical layer in harmony and depth, with a three dimensional visual effect, in perfect synch with the optical art, fractal, exactness, perfection in space, structures, shapes, visual elements, optical space, light and color. Perfection. A close perspective causes a sensation of movement, triggering the imagination, creativity and perception, order, precision and patience. Each layer is painted in complete harmony and a perfect symmetry in relation to the drawing. Absolute control of the technical details in scale, balance, geometric abstract painting, numbers and degree, resolution of shapes with three-dimensional movements; in a nutshell: the color. Art critic Emanuel Von Lauenstein Massarani wrote: “What is striking about the art of Analu Mikosz is the extreme coherence of style which results from a previous painstaking analysis of forms. Analu Mikosz creates a whole new world, where a sober and geometric landscape comes to life by means of evanescent tones which articulate a chromatic rhythm pattern. Gateways, arches, porticos, insinuate an illusion of depth and a mysterious atmosphere. Her works achieves a consistent symbiosis of two forms of expression: photography and painting. Catalogued artist, One can find her works in art collections in Europe and Brazil. Leon Oks is able smoothly weave his basic underlying foundation into a tapestry of his own unique fanciful inspiration. As one very important catalyst for his interior vision, he uses the female form. He paints her with dynamic movement, graceful lyrical lines and resplendent sensuous beauty. In his bittersweet years in the Ukraine, Leon Oks is able to retrieve the sweetness and ignore the bitterness. He paints, charming villages, smooth flowing colorful landscapes, and swaying birch trees, alive. The mood is warm, and seductive, as we distinguish the depth and emotional power of Leon’s work. Mr. Oks received many first place awards nationally and worldwide. His paintings are in museums, private collections and corporations. 36

PhilipLawrenceSherrod

www.philipsherrod.com

Hiromi Iuchi 79x46 inches 1995

Philip Lawrence Sherrod has been painting raw, earthy expressionist pictures for more than two decades. ERRATUM: 5*DECADES(!) Now that expressionism is back in vogue, one would expect his work to be hailed by critics as a typical manifestation of the new spirit, but that hasn’t happened. It may be that his work is too authentically expressionist and that the new fashion in expressionism calls for a self-conciousness and hip reference to sources that Sherrod’s painting doesn’t contain. It isn’t that his work is without sources: Delacroix, Van Gogh, Ensor, Soutine come immediately to mind. And it isn’t that he is naive; like most artists he takes what is useful to him from imagery around him. But his paintings are direct expressions of what is going on inside his mind. They are uncalculated, unedited, and some-times almost unbearably vulgar outpourings of his psyche, diametrically opposed to the contrived emotionalism of the more sophisticated ’neo-expressionists.’ Sherrod’s paintings/-often embarrass us, for they allow us to peer more deeply into the churning mind of the artist than is comfortable. There are feelings and yearnings revealed that we would, perhaps, rather not know about. But isn’t that what authentic expressionism is really about? Expressionism is not a particular style or manner of painting, but a spontaneous outpouring of the ideas, images, and emotions at the core of the artist’s life. That is what Philip Sherrod is giving us; whether we like it or not, whether the critics recognize him or not. It is the only way he can paint. Excerpt from Foreword/-Sherrod Catalog- (61 Painting Exhibition)? Thomas W. Leavitt, Director, ?Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, 1985.

Artist’s Statement Although my early training focused on a study of the old masters, my recent work has become more abstract. I am exhilarated by the challenge of evoking ideas in the viewer from the forms that escape from my fingers. Just a brushstroke on a canvas gives me the freedom to do anything I envision; there are no limits other than the dimensions of the canvas itself. I enjoy exploring the canvas, plumbing its depth and dimensions to create a piece that challenges the intellect, invites curiosity, and creates pleasure. 52

With a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Bill Stamats shows his work extensively in the US. Bill sees his work as a continuous flow of images, shapes, marks, and patterns built from years of creating a visual vocabulary that resonates with him. It is tied to nature, which is also a continuous visual flow of images, shapes, marks, and patterns. All the forces and particles of nature are one, just different ripples in the ocean of consciousness. Bill finds that the more tangential the imagery, the more it becomes metaphorical and open to the viewer’s own interpretation. Ultimately, Bill’s desire is that the viewer’s interpretation of his artwork relates on a level that connects the viewer to nature and to a spiritual sensibility that is innate.

Undefinate possibilities acrylic on canvas 95x95 cm 2013

I am completely self taught, but passionate and full of love being busy with it. I really paint out of my heart and soul and always begin with a clean sheet and mind; let colours, shapes and lines and stripes lead, my compositions, mostly with some jazz music on the background, although I like all kinds of music and begin with my work/passion/hobby with nothing but a white canvas… My mind is working while I’m busy with my pallet-knives and mixing colours and making some kind of performance in my own little town (my canvas), never know where ending, always sudden finishing and satisfied about the result without some definitely and immediately explanation, then I start thinking… Every painting has a reason to exist and I always find in my paintings a kind of same structure that I can recognize as my own kind of style. It’s always returning in horizontal and vertical stripes or lines, I think they give me structure in my busy, and sometimes chaotic art of living, I should define it as “meridianism”, a new kind of art because I always have the feeling that I am painting parts of the earth EVEN IF I DO NOT ALWAYS REALISE IT.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, Jaanimägi’s brushwork is both alluring and animated, soothingly bravura and swept throughout her paintings. Though diverse in style and subject matter, these works convey a certain tranquility, emanating peace and calm to their viewers. Slightly fantastical in theme, the paintings are rooted in tangible forms and instilled with a rich, playful whimsy. I was born in 1972 in Cologne. In my painting I try to transform the instability of the actual moment into a visually comprehensible form. I use music as a devise to enter into an intensive experience of the flow as pattern for my paintings. The brush dances with the flow and by that gets the power to vanquish even the most horrible actions in global news and lead into irregular regular forms as well as vibrating colors as a mirror of live. By that it enables to melt bad things into good, far away into near by, impossible into possible. Capitalism oil on canvas 140x100 cm 2007-2013

Adka

“The colorful, vivid and above all engaging works of Adka (Andrea Jones) are character studies written in elaborate, mischievous neon. The artist fills her rainbow-hued canvases with networks of stylized buildings, instruments, bodies or sometimes simply graphic representations of noise or movement. Faces are half-drawn, but possess twice the emotion and expression as compensation. An entire city is reduced to a single piece of iconic architecture, yet through pictorial pattern, color, and dynamic composition the atmosphere and personality of the whole is perfectly conveyed. The trick is Adka’s ability to maintain an ordered chaos among the competing elements: she always finds just the right orientation for her tilted ground, the precise angle at which one three-fingered hand should grasp another, and the threshold of stylization that prevents a pared-down object from becoming unrecognizable.

The body is the only venue for experimentation common to all of us, universal and personal. It is the language when language is dead, it is the tool when power must be destroyed. This artwork is attached in particular to the notions of texture and movement through a series of creature portraits, the development of which is a survival strategy.

Ambiguity and ambivalence are at the heart of Bresson’s work. In his pictorial approach and process, all tends to cultivate an uncertainty left to the discretion of the viewer’s eye. His compositions also make space for that which is immediately visible: the movement, the painting as pictorial matter. An archaeology of colour, Bresson’s work represents a substrata, a layered fertile ground from which the weight of the subject matter is derived by contamination. François Bresson (1981) lives and practices in the south-west of France, Aquitaine. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.

Rajangu, being equally perfect as a painter, actionalist, creator of video and spatial installations, 3D aesthetician and trans-media activist, is interested in all kinds of observables/appearances/splendours. The Zen-aesthetical gaze of his paintings, scanning bodies and the environment, enables to feel the ‘superluminous darkness’ of reality, this paradoxical metaphysical texture, which is the constituent element of our sensually perceivable world, while also adding something absolutely supra-sensual, which is simultaneously brightness and darkness, existence and non-existence. And there is no lust for power, pansexuality or political economy – the only generative principle seems to be an absolutely primal fiat, an act without bounds or rules.

“The creative Adult is the child who survived”. Following my dreams of becoming an artist was not my first choice. It was not even my second or third. I am not qualified to even do so but life has a way of surprising you. I got to live in Cape Town where I realised that creative people are everywhere. I got to meet amazing people and learn from them. It was here where I got to embrace my individuality and experience the beauty this country has to offer. It was in Cape Town where I got to apply paint to a canvas for the first time. An amazing artist and a dear friend of mine allowed me to experience the wonders of art. An obsession to express myself in a creative way was born. It took me a few years to find my style as well as the courage to share my style with the rest of the world. My love for the facial expressions and rich skin colours narrowed it down to a style I like to call “Afri – PopArt”. Afri-PopArt was born in my studio in Pretoria when I merged my passion for the “Rich skin” and my amusement for the once famous but forgotten Pop Art style. Hope you enjoy my work as much as I do…

His work has evolved from Expressionism laden poetic dyes to hyperrealism since 2011 has deeply devoted to investigate the nature of the gaze, through the present embodiment of the present painting; the object by creating a meaning in its composition almost in a minimalist look as if it was once installed today renewed for an intimate rapprochement with things.

Untitled oil painting 162x130 cm 2013

The oil paintings of Jaewoo Park take their source in photographic preparatory work. The instantaneous nature of the shutter contrast with their long and laborious transcription on canvas, doing superposing, waiting for drying and retouching... The original photographs are taken quickly, without flash, even at night, giving a character blurry and imprecise, as if they were reflected in a window or viewed through a steamy glass. Jaewoo Park reproduces scrupulously these imprecision in his paintings, which gives an intimate aspect, fragile, real but sometimes unreal. In contrast to a cold and mechanical hyperrealism, his paintings affect us just by their desired imperfections, generating a huge plastic delight.

Transforming images into non-traditional compositions fascinates her. She attempts to explore how images and concepts are interpreted in an abstract dimension. Subjects that appear stable in a realistic setting demonstrate unstable properties in the abstract realm. What appears to be genuine is nothing but a faรงade. The emotional instability of humans is presented in its natural state, raw and disoriented. Graphic elements, such as lines, shading and intense colours are utilized to express the true emotions. Every stretch of my life somehow awarded me with a bit of time when everything else came second. However, most of my works have been done within the last ten years, when time felt especially precious. In other words, a few paintings from the last century are gone without trace, a few in the current one are destined to remain with me. Mostly in a digital format, which is fine.

Working full-time from his studio in London, Patrick creates work that studies the distorted values that we place on objects, experiences and each other. The ‘Heads’ are created using torn up canvas, each piece representative of a painterly mark. During his role as a London Olympic Storyteller, Patrick met and painted Oscar Pistorius. The athlete’s subsequent fall from grace prompted the artist to reflect upon representatives of modern society. The size of the pieces pays tribute to the subject, acting almost as a shrine. But the intricate and fragile nature of them, with some pieces often pinned to the wall, suggests an impermanence. We ask ourselves, how easy could it be to tear this person apart? The pieces touch upon themes of human fragility, our own morality and the hypothesis that greatness is ultimately flawed. Patrick exhibits regularly throughout the capital.

Henrique dos Santos Pereira was born in Lisbon, in 1962. His works are made just by pleasure and mainly as an anti-stress expedient as a counter-balance for his main professional occupation. He does not consider himself as an artist but as someone with different ideas and a lot of patience to put them in practice as he is a perfectionist. He uses very different types of materials and has no common pattern. When he terminates a work he fatally feels that if he started again the outcome would better. He participated in some collective exhibitions and is represented in Art Books.

Hanging my B oxes (Se ries1) 4 paintings on each box, oil on canvas 50x50 cm, 40x40 cm, 30x30 cm, 20x20 cm 2012

The emotions that can be expressed in paint have always compelled me as an artist. From my early geometrical work, through my figurative and increasingly abstract phases, I have always sought to use painting to express my feelings, to convey them to others, and to share the beauty and humour that I perceive in the world. Raised in a country known for such masters as Picasso, Dali, and Goya, I was drawn to art at an early age. I was fascinated by the emotions that images can evoke and the way these masters juxtaposed colors, textures, mosaics, and drawing to achieve such spectacular results. In my work, I am inspired by these great painters. I have also explored sculpture and the many tools and materials that can help me express my vision with dimensional and texture. Art has changed a great deal since the time of Goya. Its subjects have changed from the formal portrayal of royalty, religion and hunting scenes to the candid capturing of reality through photographs. In my work I move between such formal representation and capturing reality. I seek to present the immediacy of my imaginary world directly to my viewer’s eye without resorting to high-tech simulation.

Basically the artwork is characterized by a modular, purely esthetic and experimental Design.German artist Tatjana Glomm with a background in design, presents her ‘objects-in-action’ which she describes as an interface between art and design. Mostly, the projects explore a modular transformation of an inferior, banal and trivial daily object by putting it into a new context. “We’re living in an affluent society. The surplus of goods implies that we do not appreciate daily objects anymore. My intention is to create an added value-according to these objects managing our daily routine.”

Neil Craver quickly became mesmerized by the creation process as a young boy. Beginning as an abstract painter and figurative sculptor, his motivation grew from an interest in chroma and psychophysical effects of these stimuli acting upon his five known senses. Photography holds all the intrinsic values of all the other arts but differs in the fact that it’s the foundation of existence. Nothing can exist without the photon; every aspect is controlled by it’s usage. This photographic series is a visual voyage of metamorphosis into the subconscious waters of the mind. The ultimate metaphysical quest into the undercurrent of consciousness.

It has been fundamental to my life and my vision for a long time, and my creativity developed through it. I love change, and become quickly frustrated with routine, so the constant variety of a photographer’s life appeals to me. I like to use my skills to show people the truth that is often not seen. Although I generally start from reality, I can be creative with what I see or work in a completely different way creating conceptual photographic compositions. The medium of photography is rich, as is the world around me, and I can go out and shoot with no predetermined focus, creating images to share with my audience.”

Ever since, a camera is her companion. Her focus is on looking behind the scenes and the structure of her motives – guided by the question “Is what we see really what we see?” With the possibilities of digital photography, she developed the technique of layering and interweaving different motives in order to create new perspectives. She finds her inspiration in her neighbourhood or during her travelling around the world.
