Hello Hollywood Vocal trio Soulmstrs shines at the World Championships of Performing Arts hree talented lads from the SCDF have done Singapore proud. Singing trio Soulmstrs represented Team Singapore at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood this July, and brought home three gold and two silver medals. The three singers all met at the SCDF’s Music & Performing Arts Club, when they were all company instructors at the NS Training Institute. Here is their story in their own words.

10 frontline / Nov–dec 2013
The SCDF’s Music & Performing Arts Club has made me a better musician. Here I get to meet amazing musicians who help build my confidence, and I get to learn harmony while on the job. I am inspired by artistes such as Beyonce or Usher and I try to emulate them, be it vocally or their work ethic. I’ll continue to write songs and I hope to get them on radio soon. My favourite quote is: We don’t have the power, but we never say never. This reminds me to push on despite the odds, regardless. Don’t let anyone question your artistry. Do you.
CPL (NS) MOHAMAD JUZAZWAN, 25 NS appointment: Company Instructor, NSTI and performer with the Music & Performing Arts Club Freelance speech and drama trainer and performing artist Facebook: JulesJumariOfficial Website: julesjumari. wix.com/jules I started performing at the age of nine in school dramas and competitions. I have been singing in musical showcases since 2006. In future I plan to do more shows and expand my contacts. I’d like to do an original show in collaboration with other artistes. For the WCOPA, we had to give ourselves a name, so I came up with the name “Soulmstrs”. Our voices are our instruments, and we’re all about feel – hence “soul”. For my solo acting segment at the WCOPA at Hollywood, I played a guy with an eating disorder – in a bathrobe. It’s not easy to have a career as a performer alone. So I also work as a host as well as a speech and drama instructor to pay the bills. Stay true to yourself. Be humble and be open to suggestions and criticism. Always be eager to learn from others.
CPL FARHAN SHAH, 22 NS appointment: Company Instructor, NSTI and performer with the Music & Performing Arts Club Singer-songwriter Top 12 finalist of Singapore Idol 2009, and debut single (“Mengapa Kau Harus Pergi”) made it to the Top 20 radio chart and won double nominations at regional awards show Anugerah Planet Muzik Facebook: FarhanShahMusic I was in an acoustic band until I joined Singapore Idol in 2009. Thankfully I made it to the top 12. Then I got my debut single out on the radio, and I’m humbled by its success on the charts and in a regional music awards show. There’s always room to improve. I watch videos of great performers to get inspired and motivate myself to get there. It’s important to stay hungry, because once you lose that, you’ll never get what you want. That inner strength and burning passion is your fuel. Don’t let anything stop you from pursuing your dreams. Get rid of negative people around you. I’ll be releasing my second single to the radio at the end of this year – stay tuned for updates on my Facebook page!

touching hearts, one at a time Religious counsellor Ustaz Salim believes every one deserves a second chance
G
“I want to let them know that religion is a way of life, not a mindless ritual,” said Ustaz Salim. He approaches inmates as a friend and less of a religious leader, because his experience has taught him that some inmates might feel inferior and become less inclined to engage. Ever ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to inmates, even after their release, Ustaz Salim
finds volunteering a fulfilling experience, even though it might be time-consuming. “Even if only one person’s life is touched, all the effort is still worth it,” he said. At the Home Team National Day Observance Ceremony held on 5 August, Ustaz Salim received the Minister for Home Affairs National Day Award (Home Team Volunteers).

rowing up in a kampong when he was a little boy, Ustaz Salim Bin Mohamed Yusoff, 53, recalls the rampant use of drugs in his neighbourhood in the 1970s. “The young men would run into my house to hide when there were police raids, a lot of ganja smokers in my area back then,” said Ustaz Salim. “They would get high, beg for money and sleep along the streets and their parents would feel embarrassed because it was a small kampong,” he added. So, 25 years ago, Ustaz Salim started volunteering as a counsellor for after-care addicts at the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association and subsequently involved himself as a religious counsellor with the Singapore Prison Service (SPS). He finds fulfilment in passing on life skills to inmates and offering religious guidance to those who wish to learn more about the Islamic faith. Ustaz Salim started a 22-monthlong Muslim intensive religious counselling programme for longterm offenders. The curriculum was designed to help inmates handle problems and temptations after release.
“We may not be able to change all those in our class, but if we could just change one person, that would be more than good enough,” said Ustaz Salim, 53, religious counsellor with the Singapore Prison Service

One with the Force Engaging our NSmen through the Committee to Strengthen National Service he Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) is committed to gain insight from the public on NSrelated issues, to take a deep look into NS and examine how Singapore should position NS going forward. How can we recognise and appreciate the contributions of NSFs and NSmen? How can we manage the demands of NS, work and personal life? How can we provide opportunities for the broader community to contribute to defence? How can we optimise the contributions of NSFs and NSmen? These are all questions that the CSNS seek to address by consulting the public. On 21 September, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs,

hosted a CSNS Focus Group Discussion at the Chevrons. The session focused on the topics of managing demands of NS, work and personal life. The NSmen were able to provide their feedback and suggestions on making NS more relevant to them. Architect SGT (NS) Zairi, 34, from the Police Airport Division, said: “This discussion has provided a good understanding of each other’s differences and has enabled voices to be heard.” Sales manager MAJ (NS) Dennis Gay, 41, a Battalion Commander, said: “CSNS has given us a broader overview of NS, and we are given a chance to voice our opinions as ORNSmen.”

spf: Strong public support for NS S continues to enjoy strong public support, and is a national institution deeply rooted in our Singaporean identity, according to an independent study conducted by the Institute of Policy Studies. Commissioned by CSNS, these findings were shared at the 4th CSNS meeting chaired by Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen at the Home Team Academy on 8 October. The meeting discussed more opportunities for full-time NSFs to contribute meaningfully, and to increase recognition and support for NS. These include increasing the number of leadership positions available for full-time NSFs, and measures to increase societal awareness of our NSmen’s contributions. The meeting also discussed expanding the pool of vocations available to NSFs. For example, non-service fit NSFs in SPF may look forward in the future to frontline support vocations such as cyber-security and CCTV monitoring. During the meeting, Director PNSD presented the SPF mission and how enlistees are trained and deployed. He illustrated them through TransCom, where they perform high-visibility patrols to ensure the security of our porous MRT system, and the Police Coast Guard, which maintains the integrity of our borders. He also shared SPF plans to transform NS personnel into crime prevention ambassadors and practitioners in their civilian capacity. The CSNS is in the midst of the second phase of engaging Singaporeans through conversations on NS to gather perspectives and ideas. The third phase, comprising of town hall meetings, started in October 2013 and will discuss possible proposals in greater detail. Members of the public who wish to take part in the discussions can sign up at www.strengthenNS.sg.

Mr Chan Chun Sing and Mr Masagos Zulkifli with SCDF personnel at 4th CD Division
scdf: Ensuring work-life balance n 23 September, Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Defence, and Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, visited the NSFs and ORNSmen at the Bukit Batok Fire Station, where they chaired a meeting with the Support for NS Working Group – one of two working groups under CSNS. Mr Alvin Yeo, MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, said those with exceptional talents such as in sports, science or the arts should be able to nurture their interest as they fulfil their national commitment. This was a key topic discussed when the Support for NS Working Group met for the third time. LTA (NSF) Liang Yao Chang, a Platoon Commander of the Special Rescue Unit (SRU) shared his experience in the eight-month Rota Commander Course, where he gained firefighting and rescue skills and honed his leadership skills. The SRU is unique in that it is an operational unit comprising 95% NSFs. The unit conducts decontamination during a chemical, biological or radiological incident as well as rescue operations in a mass casualty situation. CPT (NS) Adrian Heng Cheng Hui, a Home Team NSman of the Year Award winner in 2013, said that it is motivating to know that the SCDF is also playing its part in ensuring that ORNSmen can better juggle their work and family as they contribute to the Force.

One on One interview
Our HomeTeamNS Strongman Jeffrey Tan has brought the club from strength to strength for 16 years Tell us a little about yourself. I served in the SCDF for many years before I took over HomeTeamNS. I was an avid sportsman and lifesaver, and I was already helping in CDANS (Civil Defence Association for NSmen), organising family events and carnivals, when I joined HomeTeamNS.
What was it like when you took over the club? When I started, HomeTeamNS was known as CDANS and we were developing the club in phases every two years. For example, we built the bowling alleys and shooting range in 2000, then by the next two years we’d improve the gym and archery range, and
About Jeffrey Tan, 58 General Manager of HomeTeamNS since 1998 Served as Head of Operations in the first SCDF Division (1st CD Div) in the 1980s Previously a member of the Singapore Life Saving Society, Singapore Canoe Federation and national coach with the Singapore Dragon Boat Association Awarded the Public Service Medal for his rescue work in the collapse of the Hotel New World Father of two sons and grandfather of two Plans to travel with his wife after his retirement 34 frontline / Nov–dec 2013
then we’d work on the adventure centre, and so on. Along the way we also established the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge™, which has since become our signature event.
For the Lantern Festival in 2000, we made a lantern three storeys high and floated it down Clarke Quay. This was the most memorable moment for me. Having been in uniform before I joined HomeTeamNS, running the club was also a learning experience for me, as I had to adjust to working in a civilian environment. I am happy to say that our staff have done much to bring our NSmen together as a family, and to make this a club that they can call their own.
What would you like to share with our readers? I thank my hardworking staff for their sacrifice. It was a challenge having to manage so many clubhouses with such a lean team. I will miss my staff the most! I am also grateful to the management – Mr Masagos Zulkifli, A/P Ho Peng Kee, Mr Ng Joo Hee,
“I will miss my staff the most!” Mr Eric Yap, Mr Khoo Boon Hui and Mr James Tan – for their support. I salute our NSmen who helped in our committees, and to you, all our members, who have made it all worthwhile. It has been a wonderful journey with all of you. Moving forward, I am confident that HomeTeamNS will have a lot more to offer. We’re upgrading in phases, and with the NS45 initiatives and increase in new members, we’re confident we can deliver a better experience for our Home Team NSmen. Thank you for your support all these years. See you!
