Forging Deeper Bonds HomeTeamNS unveils new logo, new card and new clubhouses for our members and their families

2

0 November 2014 marked another milestone in HomeTeamNS’ transformation to meet the changing needs of Home Team NSmen with the reopening of its new clubhouses. Three HomeTeamNS clubhouses – Bukit Batok, Balestier and Chinatown – underwent a facelift with new facilities and tenants to engage, enrich and entertain our Home Team NSmen. The reopening ceremony was officiated by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, who also presented the Home Team NSman of the Year Award (see page 24). More than 600 Home Team NSmen and guests turned up for the event held at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok. The transformation of the clubhouses was led by Mr Masagos Zulkifli, President of HomeTeamNS, along with a HomeTeamNS management committee comprising NSmen volunteers from SCDF and SPF. Together they engaged more than 3,000 NSmen through several feedback initiatives, and sought their ideas and suggestions to improve the amenities and service of HomeTeamNS. 6

Thematic clubhouses for different needs

Since November 2013, the HomeTeamNS clubhouses have undergone extensive redevelopment, each with a unique theme and focus, to cater to Home Team NSmen with different lifestyles and preferences. HomeTeamNS Balestier (HomeTeamNS-JOM) has upgraded its sports and exercise facilities (see page 8) with badminton and tennis courts as well as a gym for working adults. It also has a bowling centre, a dance studio, a street soccer facility and a taekwondo centre for those with specific sporting needs. At HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok, members can find family-friendly facilities such as a water-themed playground, chalets and BBQ pits. Along with a multishooting arena for Laser Quest and air gun shooting, there is also a wide selection of F&B outlets and enrichment centres.

The centrally located HomeTeamNS Chinatown offers members a convenient venue to chill out and bond over a session of karaoke. “The facilities at Bukit Batok have improved with the revamp,” said SCDF NSman Low Kua Eng. “I bring my men here for unit competitions, and they’ve always enjoyed themselves.” “There are definitely more attractions at the new clubhouses, for those with families as well as the younger generation of Nsmen,” said SPF NSman James Low. “I’d definitely check out the new cool Laser Quest with my friends!”

In the works

HomeTeamNS Sembawang is undergoing upgrading and is expected to be ready by the first half of 2015 (see page 14). In addition to the refurnishing of the guest rooms, expect a wider selection

New logo and debit card

As part of the rebranding, the new HomeTeamNS logo reflects a stronger sense of identity for our NSmen. In striking orange and blue, the logo is based on five key attributes of the association: a place for bonding, fun activities, personal development, membership privileges and a celebration of NS contributions. HomeTeamNS also partnered People’s Association and POSB to launch a new membership card. To be implemented after June 2015, the

new HomeTeamNSPAssion-POSB debit card provides access to privileges from more than 1,500 merchants islandwide. On top of this, a free one-year membership is extended to a family member – a parent, spouse or child – to recognise the contributions of our NSmen. “Each time our NSmen come to our HomeTeamNS clubhouses, or use the new HomeTeamNS card, it is a reminder of what NS is about – protecting our country, our homes, our families and friends, and what matters to us,” said Mr Teo Chee Hean. “The redeveloped HomeTeamNS clubhouses, the new HomeTeamNS logo, and the new card are reminders of our appreciation for their hard work, dedication and sacrifices to help keep Singapore safe and secure for all of us.”

t was a “reunion” worth waiting for! More than 3,500 members and their families flocked to our Balestier and Bukit Batok clubhouses on 22 and 23 November 2014 following their official reopening. Free popcorns, candy floss stations, balloon sculpturing, attractive goodies, CPR demonstrations, movie screenings and Hollywood-glitz photo walls filled the renovated lobbies. There were also exciting activities such as games stall, SCDF Urban Search and Rescue Dog Shows, musical performances by OSSIA as well as live aikido and taekwondo demonstrations. It was a delightful weekend for families and NS buddies to come together and soak in the celebrations after a year of clubhouse redevelopment. “I was amazed by the benefits and privileges offered by HomeTeamNS,” said Mr Jude, who attended the Open House with his family. “As an avid gym user and swimmer, the facilities are also attractive to me. The Bukit Batok Clubhouse has truly transformed beyond recognition, and I can’t wait to enjoy my time here!” For our SPF and SCDF NSmen, it was truly an unforgettable “homecoming” for them and their loved ones. Lend a helping hand Mr Chia Hoi Heng, 66 (left), and brother Mr Chia Hoi Mun, 62, are patients with the Kidney Dialysis Foundation

A gift of hope The Chia brothers are single, unemployed and currently undergo thriceweekly dialysis treatment at KDF. They depend on their fast-dwindling CPF funds and whatever savings they have left for their daily and medical expenses. Unsubsidised dialysis treatment typically costs around $2,000 per month. For the Chia brothers, their treatments are heavily subsidised by KDF, which in turn depends entirely on the generosity of our donors to bring hope to our needy patients, who are from the bottom 10% income group in Singapore. Many patients at KDF are like the Chia brothers. You can help them by making a donation. For more information on how you can help, visit www.kdf.org.sg or call 6559-2630. About Kidney Dialysis Foundation The Kidney Dialysis Foundation (KDF) is an independent, non-profit charitable organisation which provides subsidised dialysis treatment to needy members of our community so that these patients will not be deprived of treatment due to financial difficulties. KDF is not affiliated to any other kidney foundation.

Tough times For Hoi Heng, his renal failure diagnosis came in 2010. The unexpected diagnosis was a big blow to him, as he already had no income for the last five years. “I was stunned, depressed and felt totally lost,” said Hoi Heng, who had to leave his last job as a hotel technician in 2005 due to diabetes. “I do not want to be on dialysis, but a transplant is not an option due to my age and diabetes condition.” Being a technician was physically demanding, and his worsening condition forced him to quit his job of 10 years. Since leaving his job, Hoi Heng had been living on his savings and CPF funds. His younger brother, Hoi Mun, was originally someone whom he could depend on to help out with daily expenses, as he still had a job. However, Hoi Mun was hit by a stroke in 2014, which left him halfparalysed, wheelchair-bound and unable to work. Shortly afterwards, Hoi Mun too, was diagnosed with kidney failure, putting him in the same plight as Hoi Heng. It was a double blow for them.

New Year, New You

Members share what they hope to achieve in 2015 – and how they can do all that with HomeTeamNS!

My kids are always so excited to go the clubhouse. They get to have so much fun with bowling and Laser Quest. I also book a chalet every now and then, so that we get to spend some quality time together as a family. – Muhammad Hanaffi Bin Samsuddin, 31, SCDF NSman

I want my sons to train at the new air gun shooting range, so they can take it as a CCA in school in future. They also enjoy dining at the clubhouse KFC. My wife likes the convenience of shopping at NTUC Fairprice. So everyone is happy! – Jacky Tan, 40, SPF NSman

It’s amazing to see the clubhouse’s transformation into a contemporary, lifestyle hub attracting people of all ages. I hope to host more birthdays and events at our outlet, bringing people closer together around our artisanal desserts and gelato. – Clarence Tan, 28, Milk & Honey Gelato

I’d like to see more people join the gym and benefit from all the new equipment we have here after the renovation!

The new FIX cafe serves delicious cakes and coffee! I hang out there with my friends on weekends. I also hope to train regularly in the newly renovated gym, so I can be fit enough to play rugby again.

– Wong Wee Teck, 36, Fitness Workz gym

– Leow Wei Hong, 30, SCDF NSman

16

I train hard as a bodybuilder. The gym and pool here are excellent! I want to defend and win my Nationals Bodybuilding title, as well as the overall Mr Singapore title again. – Enayathullah, 27, SPF NSman

7 tips to stay on track

1

Focus on what you want. Think “I want to get fit” rather than “I want to lose weight”.

2

Be specific. Translate your goals into action items. For example, saying “I want to pass my IPPT” is vague. Saying “I will go to the clubhouse gym on Tuesdays and Fridays” is specific.

3 The clubhouse is great for family bonding. We like to go bowling and sing at the KTV lounge. We’ve also held baby showers and birthday celebrations here! – Koh Chee Wee, 34, SCDF NSman

Living near the clubhouse means we can drop in whenever we feel like it. It’s not crowded, so we get to use the gym and pool in comfort.

– Osman Bin Mahmud, 47, SPF NSman

Remind yourself. Use Post-It notes and set reminders on your smartphone to boost your willpower.

4

Tell the world. Broadcast your plans to your family and friends (and on Facebook) to hold yourself accountable.

5

You’re not alone. Find like-minded people who share the same goal. It’s much easier when you have friends to motivate you and get you back on track.

6 In 2015, I hope to have more events and activities for children and families. I want to provide even better service to to get more members to join us! – G Segar, 49, HomeTeamNS counter staff

I enjoy the football tournaments organised by the clubhouse, and I hope to see more sports events and team competitions in future. – Muhammad Isa Abdul Haleem, 25, SPF NSman

Take baby steps. Instead of making a drastic change, go gradual. Are you likely to quit smoking altogether on 1 January? Try cutting it by one stick or two per day every month or so. Be realistic and you’re less likely to fall.

7

Be true to yourself. Ask yourself: “Is this the change I really want?” Only when you are truly convinced will you commit time and energy to make your goals work.

Welcome HOME!

After a year-long hiatus, our newly revamped Clubhouses greeted members with fun activities, giveaways and surprises

I

t was a “reunion” worth waiting for! It was a delightful weekend for so families and NS buddies to come together and soak in the celebrations after a year of clubhouse redevelopment. Visit www.HomeTeamNS.sg to find out more or join us at our next event! 23

Duty, Honour, Country Recognising our everyday heroes at the Home Team NSman of the Year Award 2014

N

ow in its eighth year, the NSman of the Year Award is presented to outstanding servicemen who displayed exemplary dedication towards NS, and carried out their duties with utmost professionalism and commitment. At the presentation ceremony held on 20 November 2014 at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok, five SCDF NSmen and five SPF NSmen received their award from Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs. This year’s winners range from 31 to 46 years of age, and six of them have served 10 or more ICTs. Our winners tell us what makes them go above and beyond their call of duty. 24

To them, NS is a lot more than an obligation. “I want to make NS a meaningful experience for my NSmen,” said SUPT (NS) Lim Kok Hwa, 40, NS Commander of Clementi Police Division. “When my NSmen return to serve, it’s important that we show and make them understand them how they are contributing back to society. This makes them more willing to come back.” These NSmen leaders endeavour to make NS useful for their men. “For the last few years, I’ve been mentoring officer cadets during their leadership phase at the Outward Bound School,” said SUPT (NS) Nicholas Phua Yeow Boon, 41, NS Head Manpower and Logistics of Central Police Division.

“I share my experience with them, and show them what to expect during their NSF and ORNS days. Some of them have requested to be posted to my unit, and from there, I continue to mentor them.” “Every ICT is a chance for me to learn from my men, and for me to guide and coach them in some way,” said LTC (NS) Alvin Low Ai Boon, 40, Battalion Commander of 31(A) Rescue Battalion, 3rd SCDF Division. “I co-chair the NS Training & Development Sub-Committee, and we try to enrich our NSmen with training opportunities that would help their career, such as courses on interpersonal communication and motivation.” Most of these ten NSmen are family men who have the support of their loved ones. “My wife plays a big part when I’m on ICT,” said MAJ (NS) Yusri Bin Ahmat, 44, Company Commander of 303(A) MRT Shelter Company. “My kids know that they need to look after one another when I’m away… in fact they all get excited when I get ready my boots and uniform to serve the nation.”

overcome their fears and open their minds. This is something I enjoy greatly as a parkour coach. Lifestyles have changed. People are not as active as they used to be. So it’s a matter of picking up where we left off, and to get moving again. When I first started my parkour academy, I faced a lot of uncertainty in venturing into an unexplored market. Now I deal with rising competition and the need to stay unique and relevant. There will always be challenges – we just need to grow in our capacity and strength to deal with them. I am currently building a new parkour facility. It’s due to open this year. I’m grateful to Heartware Network for the financial aid and guidance for my business start-up. Life is like parkour in that while we have a plan, purpose and destination, we need to be open to adapt and improvise on the go.

"Life is like parkour in that we need to be open to adapt and improvise on the go" CPL (NS) Tan Chi Ying, 28 Director and parkour instructor with A2 Movements NS appointment: Section Commander, 302B Public Shelter Unit Parkour instructor certified by ADAPT (Art du Deplacement And Parkour Teaching)

hen I was a kid, I aspired to be a superhero. I wanted to be like a ninja or jedi. These figures kind of inspired me to train and excel in what I do. While my SCDF platoon was having our SOC training, the OC of the Physical Training Wing happened to pass by when it was my turn for the run. He was impressed with my smooth movements, and that’s how I was chosen to train as a PTI. During my NS days, I was mainly involved in training and conducting IPPT. My experience in crafting lesson plans, designing obstacles and conducting training proved to be useful to me as a parkour instructor. I practise parkour – a method of training the body, soul and spirit. It is an art of motion where runners can express themselves through their movements. Parkour has done more than help my students become better in their movements – it has helped them

From Fat to Fit For Xavier Ng, age is just a number when it comes to fitness

I

t inspires me when I can add value to other people’s lives. This is why I educate people on managing their finances and issues such as risk and retirement planning as a financial advisor. During my NS days, I handled feedback and complaints from the public as part of the Service Development and Inspectorate Department in SPF HQ. This experience helped me in getting my first job in a bank. Thirty kilos in four years – that’s how much weight I put on after joining the workforce. It was tough to get back to my fitness level during my NS and university days. But I did not train to keep fit

"If you’re planning to lose weight, be very clear why you want to do it" because I received pressure from others – I did it for my health. It helps to have a friend to advise and motivate you. I trained with Mr Kevin Chiak, founder of Bodybuilding Singapore, who made working out fun for me. He showed me that “age is just a number” when it comes to physical fitness. I work out five to six times every week for an hour and half each. I also play basketball and indoor futsal. Fitness

takes up much of my free time, but I still like to catch up with friends over a meal or movie. I will continue to compete in fitness sports, serve in the SPF and help my team associates to further their career. If you’re planning to lose weight, be very clear why you want to do it. Make it compelling enough for you to stay focused and press on. Tell your friends and colleagues about it, as moral support is very important. My family has been a great help in motivating me to keep fit, especially my parents. They would remind me about my weight if they see me having latenight snacks!

You need both brains and brawn when you’re protecting the rich and famous

Although bodyguards are tough, they always try to avoid a fight in the first place

Stalkers, paparazzi, spurned lovers and overzealous fans – it’s all in a day’s work for a celebrity bodyguard

All elite celebrity guards have some military or law enforcement background – you’re either qualified, or you’re not

The general rule is to outsmart rather than outrun or outfight an opponent

Bodyguard-turnedsuperstar Michael Clarke Duncan picked up acting from his A-list clients, and then went on to act in Armageddon and The Scorpion King

words JONATHAN MEUR

Perks of the job include getting to travel and being invited to lavish celebrity parties
